Sporadiquement distribués en Méditerranée occidentale au début du Ier s. av.n.è., vaisselle et conteneurs en verre entrent dans les habitudes de consommation autour du changement d'ère et deviennent, en moins d'un siècle, des objets d'usage quotidien. Le littoral narbonnais, surface de contact entre mondes méditerranéens et continentaux, précocement soumis aux influences hellénistiques et romaines, constitue une zone propice à l'observation de cette mutation sans précédent de l'économie du verre. L'étude privilégie l'analyse d'assemblages homogènes, issus de contextes datés, autorisant une approche chrono-quantitative. Le corpus est composé de lots provenant de 18 sites du littoral de Narbonnaise orientale (épaves et dépotoirs portuaires, sites de consommation domestique, militaire et funéraire). La présence de productions non référencées ou succinctement sériées dans les classifications typologiques usuelles, invite à proposer un outil typo-chronologique adapté aux contextes précoces méditerranéens. L'approche transversale de la documentation permet de définir quatre faciès, représentatifs de quatre grandes étapes de l'évolution des productions et des habitudes de consommation. Si, en l'état des connaissances et en raison de la particularité des modes de production du verre, l'émergence et le développement des courants commerciaux sont difficiles à préciser, les abondants assemblages portuaires du littoral (Arles, Fos, Marseille, Toulon), mettent en évidence la place prépondérante des produits de consommation courante, voyageant comme vases-marchandises, dans la commercialisation des produits verriers en Méditerranée occidentale et le long de l'axe rhodanien.

Sporadically distributed in the western Mediterranean at the beginning of the first century BC, crockery and glass containers come in consumption patterns during the augustean decades and become, in less than a century, objects of daily use. The Narbonensis coastline, key point between Mediterranean and continental worlds, early influenced by Hellenistic and Roman culture, is an propitious area for the observation of this unprecedented transformation of the economy of the glass. The study focuses on the analysis of homogeneous assemblages, from dated contexts, allowing a chrono-quantitative approach. The corpus is constituted of batches from 18 sites from eastern Narbonensis (wrecks, harbour levels, domestic, military and funeral contexts). The presence of production unreferenced in usual typologies invites to propose a suitable typo-chronological tool for early Mediterranean contexts. A transversal approach allows defining four major stages in the evolution of production and consumption patterns. If, in the state of knowledge and because of the particularity of the patterns of production of glass, the emergence and development of trade flows are difficult to specify, the abundant assemblages from harbour levels (Arles, Fos, Marseille, Toulon), highlight the preponderance of common consumer products, travelling as goods more than as containers, in the trade…

▼ The aim of this thesis is to approach Ptolemaic and Imperial royal sculpture in Egypt dating between 300 BC and AD 220 (the reigns of Ptolemy I and Caracalla) from a contextual point of view. To collect together the statuary items (recognised as statues, statue heads and fragments, and inscribed bases and plinths) that are identifiably royal and have a secure archaeological context, that is a secure find spot or a recoverable provenance, within Egypt. I then used this material, alongside other types of evidence such as textual sources and numismatic material, to consider the distribution, style, placement, and functions of the royal statues, and to answer the primary questions of where were these statues located? what was the relationship between statue, especially statue style, and placement? And what changes can be identified between Ptolemaic and Imperial royal sculpture? From analysis of the sculptural evidence, this thesis was able to create a catalogue of 103 entries composed of 157 statuary items, and use this to identify the different styles of royal statues that existed in Ptolemaic and Imperial Egypt and the primary spaces for the placement of such imagery, namely religious and urban space. The results of this thesis, based on the available evidence, was the identification of a division between sculptural style and context regarding the royal statues, with Egyptian-style material being placed in Egyptian contexts, Greek-style material in Greek, and Imperial-style statues associated with classical contexts. The functions of the statues appear to have also typically been closely related to statue style and placement. Many of the statues were often directly associated with their location, meaning they were an intrinsic part of the function and appearance of the context they occupied, as well as acting as representations of the monarchs. Primarily, the royal statues acted as a way to establish and maintain communication between different groups in Egypt.

▼ This thesis is a study of the archaeology, epigraphy and historiography of Palmyrene temples and long-distance trade in early Roman Syria, Jordan, Lebanon and western Iraq. Forty-two temples are examined, both Palmyrene and comparanda, in both urban and rural settings. New models are proposed which characterise the roles which these temples are shown to have played in long-distance trade. These models include: 'networking' temples acting as foci for the network of trust upon which long-distance trade relied; 'hosting' temples acting as foci of trade itself, hosting fairs and exhibiting wealth from long-distance trade; and 'supporting' temples directly supporting trade via infrastructure such as waystations or caravanserais. New insight is thus provided into the role of temple institutions in the broader economy, in urban and rural life, and in the fabric of society as a whole. In the first part, fundamentals are established, terms defined and academic and historical background set, including the historiographical context of the thesis. The new models for the role of temples in long-distance trade are proposed in light of the evidence examined. A case study is made of Hatra as a comparandum to Palmyra, particularly with regard to the dominance of its temples. In the second part, the nature of long-distance trade in the Roman Near East is explored. The archaeology, epigraphy, literature and practicalities of ancient long-distance trade are examined, and a case study is made of Petra as a comparandum to Palmyra, particularly with regard to the incense trade which was crucial for ancient religion. In the third part, the temples of Palmyra and of Palmyrenes elsewhere, are examined, including in Dura-Europos and the Red Sea littoral. The evidence is interrogated in detail and in the context of previous research, and candidates for temples involved in or related to long-distance trade are identified. In the conclusion, the thesis is considered in the round, the consequences of the proposed models are explored, and areas for further research are identified.

The information about the first-century synagogue provided by Flavius Josephus must be handled with care when used in historical reconstructions. Josephus was a skilled rhetorician who was ideologically invested in the presentation of this institution. Due care must therefore be placed on understanding the context of his various mentions of synagogues within the overall rhetorical context of his works if we are interested in historical reconstruction of this Jewish institution. However, the tendentious nature of Josephus’ writings does not preclude historical study, not least because the assumptions and ideologies inherent in this tendenz are themselves historical. Especially in his later works (Antiquitates judaicae, Vita, and Contra Apionem), we find a deliberate presentation of the synagogue as a viable, supra-local rallying point for the Jews throughout the known world, as this institution represents an assembly in which the customs and Law of Judaism may be practiced and disseminated following the loss of the Temple and the Land. Even in the earliest work of Josephus, Bellum judaicum, we find a tendentious presentation of the synagogue as a ‘holy place’ whose precincts were breached due to the impiety of the Jewish insurgents and certain non-Jewish troublemakers. Due to the rhetorical nature of Josephus’ writings and the many hermeneutical issues that arise when we deal with space, the language of Edward Soja’s spatial theory is utilized, where heuristically profitable, in order to distinguish between the ‘spaces themselves’ (firstspace), the ideals held by the author regarding the institution (secondspace), and the combination of the two in the experience represented in the passages (thirdspace). It is precisely the rhetoric with which Josephus presents the synagogue that will lead us to a better understanding of the ideological importance that synagogues had in the lives of the communities and individuals inhabiting these spaces during the period in question.

This thesis deals with the West Cemetery of Pella that was discovered during the construction of the south By-pass of the archaeological site of Pella. The aim of this study is the examination of 421 burials and the detailed description of the excavation data and funerary offerings that were included in the tombs as well as tο shed light to the burial customs of this cemetery. Equally important is the typological and chronological classification of the material and the attempt of comparison with other cemeteries of the same era. It concerns the presentation of a primary excavation material that was organized and recorded so that someone can approach the objects and understand the ideas and beliefs of the inhabitants of ancient Pella towards the inevitable fact of death. 47 tombs of the late classical-hellenistic period, which were part of the West cemetery of Pella, were analyzed, as well as 374 tombs of the roman period that are dated from the 1st century A.D. till the first quarter of the 4th century A.D.

Αντικείμενο έρευνας της παρούσας εργασίας είναι το δυτικό νεκροταφείο της Πέλλας που αποκαλύφθηκε κατά την κατασκευή της νότιας παρακαμπήριας οδού του κεντρικού αρχαιολογικού χώρου της Πέλλας. Σκοπός της μελέτης ορίστηκε η εξέταση των 421 τάφων και η λεπτομερής καταγραφή των ανασκαφικών δεδομένων τους, όπως και η αναλυτική παράθεση των κτερισμάτων που περιείχαν αλλά και των ταφικών εθίμων και η προσπάθεια ερμηνείας τους. Εξίσου σημαντική είναι και η τυπολογική και χρονολογική κατάταξη του κινητού υλικού και των ταφικών μνημείων, όπως προέκυψε από τη συγκριτική μελέτη με άλλα γνωστά σύνολα της ίδιας χρονικής περιόδου, παρόμοιας σύνθεσης. Πρόκειται για την παρουσίαση ενός πρωτογενούς ανασκαφικού υλικού που οργανώθηκε και καταγράφηκε ώστε να μπορεί κανείς να έρθει σε επαφή με τα αντικείμενα και να κατανοήσει τις ιδέες και τις αντιλήψεις που είχαν οι κάτοικοι της Πέλλας για το αναπόφευκτο γεγονός του θανάτου. Συγκεκριμένα, αναλύθηκαν 47 ταφές που χρονολογούνται στην υστεροκλασική-ελληνιστική περίοδο και αποτελούν τμήμα του δυτικού νεκροταφείου της Πέλλας και 374 ρωμαϊκές ταφές που χρονολογούνται από τον 1ο αι. μ.Χ. ως το α΄ τέταρτο του 4ου αι. μ.Χ.

▼ La recherche conduite par celui qui écrit avance à l'intérieur de tel classement dans la tentative d'isoler une nouvelle typologie de bâtiment. La combination de ces éléments dans un précis intervalle chronologique a conduit à la création de structures telles qui peuvent être consideré de plein droit des monuments caractérisés par des formes et décorations spécifiques, voulus par un proprietaire et mis en œuvre par des ouvriers spécialisés. En considérant l'ensemble des différentes parties architectoniques, la critique moderne est arrivée à distinguer deux grandes catégories : la villa d'otium et la villa rustique. Avec l'expression villa d'otium l'on indique généralement une résidence caractérisée tout d'abord par un considérable engagement planimétrique qui se traduit soit en des dimensions considerables ,soit en des choix architectoniques particulièrement originaux, en plus chaque pièce est riche de complèxes décorations pariétales et des sols. Tels bâtiments se caractérisent en particulier par la prédominance du secteur résidentiel (pars urbana), à détriment de la productive (pars rusica), en donnant au bâtiment une fonction essentiellement d'habitation.Avec villa rustica l'on peut se référer au contraire à un bâtiment qui peut parfois se caractériser par un certain engagement architectonique mais qui generalement se caractérise par des dimensions plutôt modestes et par la simplicité dans le choix du cycle décoratif. En plus dans tels bâtiments la fonction productive est dominante à détriment de la partie résidentielle. À l'intérieur de ces deux grandes macrocatégories c'est possible d'insérer puis des bâtiments qui présentent des caractéristiques particulières, comme par exemple des grandes villas rustiques distinguées aussi par un cycle décoratif considerable, ou encore des grandes villas d'otium, bȃties le long de la côte, distinguées par une monumentale scenae frons qui devient un élément dominant et essentiel de tels bâtiments au point d'attribuer la définition de villas maritimes ou côtières. De ce point de vue devient fondamental l'oeuvre de Xavier Lafon, qui sera l'objet d'un traité plus soigné dans le chapitre V, dans lequel a été abordé le rapport existant entre la catégorie des bȃtiments identifiés par l'auteur et les villas objet du catalogue-ci. Dans ce contexte je considère necessaire préciser que l'oeuvre de Lafon constitue le point de départ fondamental ensemble avec l'oeuvre de la De Franceschini , au moment où l'on veut aborder de façon méthodique l'étude sur les grandes villas bȃties en Italie. Il faut ajouter que les deux auteurs donnent une tranche très différente à leur œuvre. Le premier se limite seulement aux villas cȏtières pendant que la deuxième se concentre essentiellement sur les villas de la campagne romaine , en considérant contextes diachroniques, rapprochés essentiellement par la meme zone territoriale. ▼ At least 64 shipwrecked stone transports have been discovered throughout the Mediterranean region dating primarily to the Roman period. Few have been excavated and even fewer have had more than scant hull remains recovered. None have been thoroughly examined with a focus on the construction of the vessel. Consequently, little is known about stone transport or the construction of stone transport ships from archaeological contexts or ancient historical sources. In 1993, on an Institute of Nautical Archaeology (INA) shipwreck survey along the western Turkish coast, the Kızılburun column wreck was discovered. At present, excavated ceramics suggest the date of the Kızılburun shipwreck lies in the first century B.C.E.; the Late Hellenistic period (323-31 BCE). Analyses of the marble consignment have revealed that the ship carried a primary cargo of architectural elements quarried on the island of Proconnesus. Subsequent investigations point to a likely destination of the ancient city of Claros on the Karian coast of Asia Minor (modern day Turkey). Between 2005 and 2011 excavations were carried out on the column wreck by an international team of archaeologists, INA staff members, and graduate students led by Donny Hamilton and Deborah Carlson, both of Texas A&M University. The 2005 excavation season produced the first, albeit scant, hull remains, with more timbers being recovered between 2006 and 2009. The most substantial hull remains were recovered in 2007 following the removal of the eight large marble column drums to a more remote part of the site. The intense weight and pressure exerted by the heavy cargo on the hull remains aided the preservation by creating an environment that was unfavorable for wood consuming organisms and other biological agents. Recording and detailed examination of the hull remains was conducted during the summer of 2008, fall of 2009, and fall of 2010. This thesis presents the analyses and interpretation of the Kızılburun ship’s wooden hull remains and copper fasteners. Additionally, after discussing the methods of recording and cataloging of the ship’s extant remains, I place the ship in its historical and technological contexts, demonstrating that it was of contemporaneously common dimensions and construction, as opposed to a more robust construction that is often assumed of ancient stone-carrying vessels. This thesis collects and examines the sculptured portraits (imperial and private, male and female) found in Attica and dated from the 1st c. B.C. to the beginning of the 2nd c. A.D. The first part of this study is dedicated to the typology of the portraits. Firstly the imperial ones and their relationship to the official typology of the metropolitan imperial portraits is discussed. Concerning private portraits, the data gathered suggests the use of general design templates/models, the “schemata” that were used by the artists as the core of the plastic creation and were modified according to the different hairstyle and individual motives, producing a variety of private portraits. Although the use of 12 ‘schemata’ for male and 3 for female private portraits has been ascertained, there are, nevertheless, several private portraits that cannot follow this categorization, therefore, they are dealt as unique cases. Next, the body types adopted for the attic portraits are discussed. A close look at the data indicates the wide diffusion of the cuirassed type, the limited representation in the toga statue type and the idealistic types, the connection between the seated statues and the first schema of male portraits and the rare documentation of the himation types and the otherwise widely preferred, during these times, Grand and Small Herculaneum types, as well as the Schulter- and Hüftbausch types, for the women. As far as the form of the portraits is concerned, this thesis propounds the view that there is a preference for the most idealistic youthfull schema on the funerary relief, a gradually rising preference for the bust-portraits, the existence of portraits to be inserted into herm shafts and the occasional rendering of portraits on medallions. Furthermore, the role of the portraits– that is cult, dedicatory/honorary, funerary – is examined according to the inscriptions, although they cannot be combined with any of our portraits. In addition, issues relevant to the production of the attic portraits are presented namely, their technical and stylistic features and their relation to the attic sculptural production of the time and the Delian portraits. The location of the workshops, as can be resumed from the published excavated areas as well as the specification of the Athenian artists who made portraits, as we know them from their signatures or from stylistic association among the studied archaeological material is also examined. At the end, an index provides indicative attributions of portraits to the attic sculptural workshops.

The purpose of the present study is to examine the artistic activity of the parian marble workshops of the Hellenistic and Roman period. The first part describes the historical context and the social, economic and political conditions of the Hellenistic and Imperial period. This part includes also a chapter for the ancient marble quarries of Paros and the exportation of Parian marble during this period. This research is based on the results of recent research carried out at the site known as “Floga”on Paros, that has brought to light the remains of a complex of buildings, including a marble workshop. The lot, measuring 5.404,60 sq m, is situated to the W of the circuit of the Paros ancient walls. Initial investigation was conducted during the 1980s, by the archaeologist Klairi Efstratiou. In the southeastern section of the lot, excavation brought to light two rooms of a building. Although the ceramic finds indicate domestic activities, a large number of loomweights also found in the area, seem to indicate that a weaver’s workshop was probably also operating there as well. In 2008, 2010 and 2011 excavation resumed in the western section of the area, revealing a large, square room (1) and a large building of two rooms. Excavation revealed the walls and a well-preserved floor of the large, square room (1). The inner surface of its north and east wall is covered with plaster panels imitating marble. The floor of the room is composed of irregular chips of white marble. Immediately to the west was found the large building of two rooms. The excavation in its southern room uncovered its south and west walls, the latter including the entrance. In this room was found a statuette of the Late Hellenistic period depicting Aphrodite untying her sandal. A series of unfinished statuettes of the Late Hellenistic period were found inside and around of the room (1), suggesting that this probably was the sculptor’s workshop. Although these finds indicate the operation of a workshop during the Late Hellenistic period, a series of marble pyxides of the Classical period, also found in the area, seem to indicate that a marble workshop was probably also operating there during this time. Apart from the sculpture found in the ancient marble workshop, were also considered the statues and statuettes of the Hellenistic and Roman period from Paros Museum and the surviving sculpture signed by Parian sculptors, that was found outside of Paros island. Finally, this research presents the sculptural production of Delian and Rhodian marble workshops and examines the similarities and the differences between the sculptures of these three Aegean islands. By the conclusion of this particular study is clear that this period the sculptural style and the subjects are similar throughout the Aegean.

La volonté : peu de termes reviennent dans des débats aussi nombreux et aussi divers ; peu se prêtent à un aussi large éventail de registres, de l’ordinaire au sacré. Mon travail voudrait introduire à la notion de volonté chez Cicéron, et aux nouveaux champs sémantiques ouverts par lui pour la postérité. Le rôle accordé à lui jusqu’ici dans les généalogies de la volonté a été au mieux mineur. Mais les archives numériques confirment un fait curieux : tout le corpus latin antérieur à Cicéron contient environ 25 occurrences de voluntas ou de ses formes déclinées. Dans le seul corpus cicéronien, le mot apparaît 644 fois. Sa théologie pense l’univers en tant qu’il est déterminé par la mens ac voluntas des dieux, et fait passer le progrès de l’âme par la contemplation de la volonté divine. La voluntas est centrale dans sa réflexion sur l’émotion et la responsabilité en contexte judiciaire. Dans ses traités philosophiques, il adapte l’éthique stoïcienne et fait de la volonté le siège de la progression morale. En outre, c’est Cicéron et non Lucrèce qui a le premier examiné la liberté du vouloir humain : lorsqu’il entreprit, à trente-six ans, l’accusation de Verrès, puis dans le De fato, où sa défense de la libera voluntas mobilise le Portique et l’Académie contre le Jardin. Enfin, Cicéron invente la volonté du peuple telle que nous la connaissons. Le plus grand orateur romain, pionnier de la pensée politique de langue latine, fait de la voluntas populi la force agissante d’une république souveraine. Son idée de la volonté populaire contient d’ailleurs en germe les problèmes de représentativité des élites que nos démocraties électorales cherchent encore à résoudre.

The will : few words feature in so many distinct debates, nor range so vastly from the simple to the sacred. This thesis is intended to provide a thorough study of the notion of will in Cicero, and of the new semantic pathways he opens for posterity. The role attributed to him in genealogies of the will has been relatively minor. But digital archives confirm a curious fact: all extant Latin texts prior to his lifetime yield around two dozen occurrences of voluntas and its cognates. In the texts we have, Cicero uses the word 644 times. His theology examines the character of the world determined by the mens ac voluntas of the gods, and the improvement of the soul in the contemplation of divine will. Voluntas propels and inspires Cicero’s study of emotion in criminal liability. In the Tusculan Disputations and De officiis, he adapts Stoic ethics to propose the will as locus of moral progress. Further, it was Cicero, not Lucretius as some have argued, who first considered the “freedom” of human will – as a 36-year-old prosecutor, and then in the De fato, where his argument for libera voluntas marshals the Stoa and Academy to repudiate the Epicureans. Finally, Cicero invents “the will of the people” as we know it. Rome’s greatest orator and the pioneer of political thought in Latin, he makes voluntas populi the catalyzing force of a sovereign republic. So too does he…

L'objectif de cette thèse est d'étudier sur le long terme, depuis la fin de l'époque achéménide jusqu'à celle du Haut-Empire (aux alentours de 235 après J.-C.) l'implantation de troupes et de vétérans perses, gréco-macédoniens, thraces, lyciens et romains, puis de leurs descendants, dans l'espace phrygien, région quelque peu marginale située dans le centre-ouest de l'Anatolie. Après avoir dans la première partie identifié et justifié stratégiquement les différents lieux d'installation, elle examine l'impact économique de celle-ci au travers de l'étude de la mainmise sur la terre et ses productions, du rôle des soldats en tant que producteurs et consommateurs et de leur implication dans la sécurisation du territoire. Sur un plan social, le quotidien des militaires, des vétérans et de leurs familles est ensuite examiné, de même que les formes prises par leur domination sur le reste de la population et leurs choix religieux. Le tout s'appuie sur un vaste corpus de plusieurs centaines d'inscriptions et de monnaies.

The objective of this thesis is to study on the long term, since the end of the achaemenid period until that of the roman Top-empire (near 235 AD) the setting-up of persian, greco-macedonian, thracian, lycian and roman troops and veterans, then of their descendants, in the Phrygian space, a little marginal region situated in west central Anatolia. Having in the first part identified and justified strategically the various places of installation, it examines the economic impact of this one through the study of the seizure by the earth and its productions, the role of the soldiers as producers and consumers and of their implication in the reassurance of the territory. On a social plan, the everyday life of the servicemen, the veterans and their families is then examined, as well as the forms taken by their domination on the rest of the population and their religious choices. The whole is based on a vast corpus of several hundred inscriptions and coins.

In the context of the construction of the Thessaloniki Metro, the Ephorate of Antiquities of Thessaloniki City –former 16th Ephorate of Prehistoric and Classical Antiquities– undertook the archaeological research in the western and eastern part of the project outside the ancient city walls, at the area where the western and eastern cemeteries are located.Among the burial finds discovered during the excavations of the years 2007 to 2011 an important corpus of jewellery is included. These finds are part of the broader category of items of personal adornment including wreaths, pins, earrings, pendants, beads and necklaces, chains, bracelets, rings, brooches and belt buckles.In the context of an overall approach to jewellery as objects with ornamental and symbolic function, all the items are examined, regardless of their category and raw material. The questions raised concern their typological and chronological classification, while, at the same time, taking into account the excavation data (context, co-finds, palaeo-demographic data, etc.), issues in relation to their distribution are analyzed by category, material and quantity per period (Hellenistic and Roman) and per cemetery (east and west). Additionally, an attempt is made to approach the practices of personal adornment during the Hellenistic and Roman times in Thessaloniki based on the categories, quantities and combinations of jewellery used in relation to gender and age groups.

Στο πλαίσιο κατασκευής του ΜΕΤΡΟ Θεσσαλονίκης η Εφορεία Πόλης Θεσσαλονίκης –πρώην ΙΣΤ΄ ΕΠΚΑ– ανέλαβε την αρχαιολογική έρευνα στο δυτικό και ανατολικό εκτός των τειχών της αρχαίας πόλης τμήμα του έργου, εκεί όπου χωροθετούνται αντίστοιχα το δυτικό και το ανατολικό νεκροταφείο. Μεταξύ των ευρημάτων που προήλθαν από τις ανασκαφές που διενεργήθηκαν στις παραπάνω περιοχές κατά το χρονικό διάστημα από το 2007 έως και το 2011 συγκαταλέγεται και ένα σημαντικό σύνολο κοσμημάτων τα οποία αποτελούσαν στην πλειονότητά τους ταφικά κτερίσματα. Πρόκειται για ευρήματα τα οποία εντάσσονται στην ευρύτερη κατηγορία των αντικειμένων προσωπικής κόσμησης και συμπεριλαμβάνουν στεφάνια, περόνες, ενώτια, περίαπτα, χάνδρες και περιδέραια, αλυσίδες, βραχιόλια, δακτυλίδια, πόρπες ενδυμάτων και πόρπες ζώνης. Στο πλαίσιο μιας ολιστικής προσέγγισης των κοσμημάτων ως αντικειμένων με διακοσμητική και συμβολική λειτουργία εξετάζεται το σύνολό τους, ανεξάρτητα από την κατηγορία και το υλικό κατασκευής τους. Τα ζητήματα που τίθενται αφορούν στην τυπολογική και χρονολογική κατάταξη τους ενώ παράλληλα, λαμβανομένων υπόψη των ανασκαφικών δεδομένων (πλαίσιο συνάφειας, συνευρήματα, παλαιοδημογραφικά στοιχεία κ.ά.), εξετάζονται θέματα κατανομής τους κατά κατηγορία, υλικό και ποσότητα ανά εποχή (ελληνιστική και ρωμαϊκή) και ανά νεκροταφείο (ανατολικό και δυτικό). Τέλος, επιχειρείται μία προσέγγιση των πρακτικών κόσμησης στη Θεσσαλονίκη των ελληνιστικών και ρωμαϊκών χρόνων με βάση τα είδη, τις ποσότητες και τους συνδυασμούς των κοσμημάτων που χρησιμοποιούνται σε σχέση με το φύλο και τις ηλικιακές ομάδες.

Bununla birlikte bu dönemde yerel dille Yunan dili etkileşmiş, mimarlık ve sanat alanına da kültürel hayatın bütün yönleri nüfuz etmiştir. M.Ö. 64 yılından itibaren, Suriye, Roma egemenliğine girmiş ve bu kültürel miras Roma egemenliğinde devam etmiştir. Bu aşama sırasında Suriye yeni rönesanstan birçok yönden etkilenmiş, özellikle mimari yapı ve dini tesisler yeniden kurulmuştur. Ayrıca çoğu tapınaklar ve kült alanları birden fazla mimari aşama içerir ve her aşamada farklı özelliklere sahiptir. Bu nedenle bu aşamaların uğradığı değişimi bilmek için gerek yerel tanrıların ve tapınakların gerekse Yunan ve Roma tapınakların mimari özelliklerine göre incelemiştir. Bu araştırma beş ana bölüme ayrılmıştır. Birinci bölümde; konu, kapsam, amaç, önem ve yöntem ele alınmıştır. İkinci bölümde; kısaca Suriye tarihinden bahsedilmiştir. Eski Çağlardan Roma Dönemi sonuna kadar tarihe genel bakış ele alınmıştır. Üçüncü bölümde; Suriye'nin Kuzey ve Orta bölgelerinde bulunan kentlerin kutsal alanlarının standartları, Eski Doğu'daki Kutsal alanlara genel bakış, Suriye'nin Kuzey ve Orta bölgesi'ndeki hem Eski Doğu ve Arkaik hem de Hellenistik ve Roma Dönemlerinde kutsal alanları hakkında bilgi verilmiştir. Dördüncü bölümde; tezin konusu olan Hellenistik ve Roma Dönemi, Suriye'nin Kuzey ve Orta Suriye bölgelerinde bulunan şehirlerdeki tapınak ve kutsal alan planları çizilmiş, mimari özellikleri ve bezemelerinden bahsedilmiştir. Son bölümde analiz, değerlendirme, sonuç, görüşler ve araştırma ile ilgili tablolar ve kaynakçalar gösterilmiştir. As of 323 BC, Syria began to be influenced by the Greek civilization or was called Hellenistic civilization. During this period, cultural values and civilizational among the Greek and Eastern peoples have become intertwined with each other. The influence also included many aspects of cultural life such as architecture, art and the interaction of the Greek language with the local language as well. After entering the region to rule the Roman Empire from 64 BC, during this period the cultural heritage that existed in the previous period has been preserved and Syria has witnessed a new era of the urban renaissance, in particular the reconstructed architectural buildings and religious facilities. L’impôt joue un rôle important dans les relations de pouvoir en Judée aux époques hellénistiques et romaines, non seulement par son poids économique, mais aussi et surtout par ses aspects idéologiques. Car imposer une population revient à s’en prétendre maître. Or, en Judée, une première lecture des sources laisse croire que beaucoup voyaient d’un mauvais œil le tribut étranger, alors que le temple de Jérusalem prélevait déjà des impôts censés revenir à Dieu, seul véritable maître d’Israël. Un examen plus attentif montre l’aspect polémique de cette déclaration : cette opposition dialectique entre les prélèvements du temple et ceux revenant aux étrangers est une construction idéologique, dont le but est de fournir une légitimation de l’opposition politique. Apparue à l’époque des Maccabées et participant à l’argumentation théologique de leur soulèvement, cette rhétorique se repère, avec quelques variations, dans chaque mouvement contestataire jusqu’à Bar Kokhba. Mais les sources dissimulent quelques indications qui montrent que tous ne partagent pas cette vue, et que dans les faits, l’offrande n’est pas plus joyeusement payée que le tribut. L’objet de cette thèse est de mettre en avant cette construction représentationnelle en la confrontant aux données brutes, et d’en souligner les implications sociales, économiques, financières et politiques, depuis la conquête de la Judée par Antiochos III jusqu’à la disparition de la province de Judée en 135 apr. J. C.

Taxes are important matters for understanding relations of power in Hellenistic and Roman Judaea, not only because of its economic burden, but above all because of its ideological sides: to tax a population means to pretend being its master. In Judaea, a first look to the sources let believe that many saw with a bad eye the foreign tribute, while the temple of Jerusalem exacted some revenues supposed to return to God, the sole proper master of Israel. However, a close examination proves the polemical sides of such a declaration: this dialectical opposition between the revenues of the shrine and the ones returning to foreigners is an ideological construction, whose purpose is to furnish a legitimation to the political opposition. Appeared at the time of the Maccabean uprising and used for theologically founding the war, this rhetorical instrument is visible, with some variations, in each protest movement until Bar Kokhba. But the sources hide some indications that let see that not everyone shared this view, and that, in the facts, the “offering” is not more cheerfully paid that the “tribute”. The purpose of the present dissertation is to underline the social, economical, financial and political implications of this representational construction, since the conquest of Judaea by Antiochos III, until the disappearance of the Judaea in 135 C.E.

This paper lists and studies the numerous representations of the marine thiasos in the Hellenistic and Early Imperial periods. At first, it defines the thiasos as a procession of real and imaginary sea creatures and then it cites its members, recording the birth and evolution of each, from the archaic era to the late 1st c. A.D. It also studies the way in which these figures combine with each other to form larger representations, which are distinguished into mythological-narrative and non-narrative ones. The paper first analyzes the narrative ones, it separately examines each myth within which the marine thiasos is encountered and it verifies the popularity and the chronological and geographical distribution of the related monuments. Special attention is paid to the myth of the transportation of the achillean armour by the Nereides, which, being the theme of a popular early 5th c. tragedy, was the reason why the very first depicted thiasos representations took place. Going on, the paper studies the non-narrative thiasoi, which were born somewhat later than their narrative counterparts, they coexisted with them gradually outnumbering them, till they finally replaced them, showing the tendency of the thiasos depictions from simplicity and narration towards complexity and decorativeness. Then, after a combined study of the burial monuments and the related literary sources, it is concluded that the thiasos, especially in the myth of Achilles, was outstandingly popular in Apulia and the Black Sea region in the early Hellenistic era, regaining this popularity in 1st c. B.C. Italy, after an almost complete 250 year long absence, now in the form of heraldic sea creatures. The burial thiasoi denote blessedness, honour and heroization, qualities they acquired due to the achillean myth and the Nereides’ relation to immortality. On the other hand, the thiasoi on the public monuments dedicated by the Hellenistic rulers, the Roman nobility and the Emperors, served to the dynastic propaganda and the self-representation program of the dedicators. The paper proves there was a hellenistic tradition in depicting thiasoi on monuments commemorating naval victories, a tradition that was taken over and exploited to an enormous extent by Augustus in his Actium propaganda. The predilection shown by him and the Julian dynasty for the heraldic Tritones was replaced by a predilection for the Nereides from the neronean years on. This age also makes the most of the decorative quality of thiasos. Finally, the paper draws the conclusion that the common denominator behind all of the thiasos functions is its quality as an escort during the critical moments of life, including death and victory and prevalence.
