▼ With the rapid development of technology and the widespread of wireless networks, the ability of mobile devices likes tablet PCs and smart phones is also growing. In addition to providing text and voice calling, they also provide the diversity service likes the transmission of multimedia streaming and social networking, making the burden of the network more and more heavy. Therefore how to provide a smoother network experience becomes the competing goal of each ISP (Internet Service Provider).
With the construction of high-speed rails, it makes the user move much quicker than the pedestrians and vehicles in the past. In the third generation of mobile networks, due to lack of support for the high-velocity user, the user can not have a stable connection on the high-speed rail. So LTE (Long Term Evolution) boosts supporting the high velocity of terminal to enhance the user's network experience. In addition to enhancing the transmission rate of uplink, downlink and spectrum efficiency, LTE-A also added a lot of new technologies such as RN (Relay Node), CoMP (Coordinated multi-point operation), and so on.
In this paper, we use the characteristic of the fixed path of the high-speed train, by making the train as a Relay Node and predicting the path of a train to accurately deliver the packets to the base station which will transport to the train to reduce the packet delay and loss rate and avoid the packets needed to be transferred between the base stations because of the handover. We further utilize CoMP of Coordinated Scheduling between base stations, thereby improving the user's network experience.
The simulation results show that, by predicting the path of packets, the proposed method in this paper can effectively enhance the overall amount of traffic, and reduce latency and packet loss rate.

▼ With the rapid development of the technology, the mobile communication device become more and more powerful. At the beginning, the mobile phone can just make a simple voice call. But now, the smart phone can not only send a text message but also play the real-time online streaming and play online game. All of these service are associate with the mobile network. Hence, providing a better network experience becomes an important topic for ISPï¼Internet Service Providerï¼.
In 3G mobile network period, the network speed and bandwidth can provide user with stable connections. In 4G mobile network period, with higher speed and more bandwidth, the network user experience become well, especially in the high speed railway scenario.
This thesis focuses on the transmission between the user in the train and base station in High Speed Railway scenario. The proposed scheme can enhance the overall performance by full using the multi-antenna on the train to transmission and selecting a suitable interface for each packet type in transmission.
The experiment was conducted by LTE-Sim network simulator to analyze the performance of this method to grab more transmission resource and send packet via suitable interface, allowing better overall network performance. The simulation results also show that this method is feasible in mobile network in

▼ Thanks to the development of technology and popularity of wireless Internet, all kinds of mobile devices on the market have equipped with functions from mere text transfers and transmission of voice calls to the multiple services of social networking, media streaming, and video games. With the increase of demands on mobile device service, the loading of the Internet has grown. Thus, to satisfy peopleâs greater needs of the Internet, it becomes the target of telecom companies compete in.
As the construction and transportation of the high-speed railway take place, the locomotion of wireless Internet users have gotten faster. In addition, as the need of wireless telecommunication increases, the speed and bandwidth of LTE ï¼Long Term Evolutionï¼ cannot provide sufficient service to meet with current usersâ demand. In light of this, 3GPP suggests the LTE-A ï¼Long Term Evolution-Advancedï¼ standard to enhance the bandwidth and efficiency of uplink and downlink transmissions of mobile devises and to meet the requirement of fast movement New technologies, such as CoMP ï¼Coordinated multi-point operationï¼, RN ï¼Relay Nodeï¼, and so forth are proposed to satisfy the contemporary demand of the Internet.
The thesis aims at a suitable mechanism to connect Internet users with base stations while users travel in a train moving at a high speed. Using the fixed schedule of the train, equipping transmitting antennas ï¼Multi-Antennaï¼ on the roof of the train cabin, applying the CoMP technology provided by 4G, and applying JT ï¼Join Transmissionï¼ technology of CoMP, We can predict and forward data to appropriate base stations based on the current speed and direction reported from the CoMP users on the train.
This thesis will use the NS3 simulator to analyze the efficiency of the proposed approach. Through the feedback mechanism to report the speeds and directions of travelling trains, base stations will determine where to dispath real-time packet access and schedule packet transmissions. With the CoMP and multiple antennas, we will provide a method for real-time transmission with high performance on the high-speed railway trains. The simulated results of this approach have proved viability of the proposed scheme in the mobile web.

▼ High-speed rail (
HSR) is a complex system incorporating various technical aspects such as infrastructure, rolling stock (specially-designed train sets), telecommunications, operating conditions, and equipment. The highly sophisticated technology combining these elements, as well as the elements themselves continue to evolve as the new transportation mode continues to expand and its intrinsic characteristics pose design issues unique to
HSR systems. With the requirements for deflections, rotations, and natural frequencies of
HSR bridge structures, comprehensive understanding of the
HSR dynamic interactions is a topic of growing interest. Accordingly, many studies over the past few decades have been conducted, mostly internationally, with a focus on dynamic interaction between the different components of
HSR train/bridge systems through sophisticated structural models. The focus of this research is to identify these modeling features and inherent characteristics of
HSR bridges, and to provide guidance and demonstration examples on how to develop such models in OpenSees. Such models will aid researchers and designers in conducting parametric studies to test the static, modal, and dynamic performance of future
HSR bridge designs to formulate a national standard for
HSR infrastructure in the United States. The main objective of this study was to create a comprehensive modeling guideline for
HSR bridge systems. To do so, a thorough literature review was conducted to synthesize various methods of numerical modeling techniques used to model
HSR systems. Literature published from national and international sources were reviewed and compiled to demonstrate how the individual components within a train system, track system, and bridge system have been modeled in previous studies. The synthesis also identified the similarities and differences regarding the different finite element modeling techniques for different components. Based on the studies analyzed in the literature search, a prototype train system and track-bridge system were selected to construct a fully detailed example
HSR bridge model. The prototypes were selected based on available information regarding the design of the prototype components to minimize assumptions necessary to model the prototype system. A step-by-step guide of the processes of formulating the model and analysis parameters from start to finish were documented, accompanied by snapshots from a sample OpenSees model input file for guidance and future use.To exemplify potential use of the developed model for informing future designs using OpenSees data output, sample static and dynamic analyses were performed with load cases without train loading and with train loading on the prototype
HSR bridge. Additionally, a brief analytical study was performed to demonstrate the
HSR bridge seismic performance using three different ground motions. The ground motions were retrieved from the PEER Ground Motion Database and were amplified to various degrees to perform nonlinear time history analysis. The nonlinear…

▼ Background: A more sophisticated and conceptually
realistic measure of geographic distance using network time may
provide a better measure of geographic access to TB control health
services compared to the traditional Euclidean ‘as-the-crow-flies’
distance. Objectives: 1) Compare Network time to Euclidean
distance; 2) Determine the association between Network time and
Euclidean distance to LTBI treatment adherence; 3) Determine the
association between network time and Euclidean distance to
treatment seeking delay.Design: The data for this study was from a
longitudinal cohort Tuberculosis (TB) study called the Kawempe
Community Health Study.Setting: The study was based in Kampala,
Uganda. The data for manuscript 1 was collected from April 1, 2002
to December 31, 2009 while the data available for manuscripts 2 and
3 was collected during the period April 1, 2002 to December 31,
2007.Patients: Manuscript 1 included geographic coordinates of
N=663 patient homes; Manuscript 2 included N=361 study participants
who were receiving LTBI treatment; Manuscript 3 included N=325
symptomatic active TB cases who presented to the national TB clinic
for treatment. Analysis: Means/Standard Deviation and Median and
inter-quartile range were used to summarize the data where
parametric and non-parametric respectively. Spearman’s correlation
and Linear Regression is used to evaluate the relationship and the
statistical fit between Euclidean distance and Network travel time.
Bivariate analyses using Chi-square and the student t and
Wilcoxon’s test were performed and significant variables (at p <
0.2) included in the multivariable logistic model using PROC
GENMOD. All the analyses were done in Statistic Analysis Software
(SAS Institute version 9.2, Inc., Cary, North Carolina). Results:
The two measures of geographic distance were correlated but that
Network time offered better statistical fit. 2) Greater geographic
time was associated with poor adherence. Furthermore network time
was a better predictor of adherence than Euclidean distance. 3)
Greater geographic time was associated with TB treatment seeking
delay. Discussion: The availability of robust GIS applications have
allowed a more sophisticated and realistic measure of geographic
access using Network time compared to Euclidean distance. A better
measure of geographic distance may be used for more effective
health service resource allocation and improve access. Furthermore,
the results may allow more effective targeting of TB control
interventions to individuals with poor geographic access that may
be more likely to be non-adherent to treatment as well as delay
seeking TB treatment.

▼ China has built the world’s longest network of High Speed Rail (
HSR) systems in less than 5 years. However, there are very few studies on the life cycle impact of China’s
HSR systems compared to studies around the world. Environmental impacts of China’s
HSR could be very significant due to dependence on dirty coal-fired power and material and energy intensive bridges. Thus, a life cycle assessment of China’s
HSR systems is necessary. Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) is used to investigate environmental impacts of China’s
HSR system between Beijing and Shanghai, assessing life cycle stages including: (1) vehicle manufacture, maintenance, and disposal; (2) infrastructure construction; (3) operation. Data from Chinese Ministry of Railway, Ecoinvent database, and Chinese Core Life Cycle Database (CLCD), are compiled to build the HSR’s life cycle inventory. LCA software eBalance is used to conduct the analysis. Additional scenarios are developed by varying infrastructure composition, electricity mix,
HSR development, travel length of cross-line vehicles, vehicle utilization, occupancy rate, and use of fly ash in concrete, in order to help identify major drivers of environmental impact and propose recommendations for improvement. It is discovered that operation stage contributes to 72-91% of the impacts in Acidification Potential (AP), Primary Energy Demand (PED), Eutrophication Potential (EP), Global Warming Potential (GWP), and Respiratory Inorganics (RI). Vehicle stage contributes to 43% of impact in Chinese Abiotic Depletion Potential (CADP). Infrastructure construction accounts for 54% of impact in Chemical Oxygen Demand (COD) and 38% of impact in CADP. Scenario analysis identified several key drivers of impact, including proportion of bridge, tunnel, and reinforced subgrade, electricity mix, various factors that lead to different demands of
HSR vehicle and transportation, and fly ash use in concrete. Several suggestions are proposed to improve life cycle environmental performance of
HSR projects. It is also discovered that China’s
HSR systems have higher impact in RI than Germany’s
HSR and conventional rail systems, and lower impact in RI than Switzerland’s road and air systems.

In agricultural areas, we observed a decrease of grasslands and change in their management in the last half–century, which are commonly associated with agriculture intensification. These changes have affected environmental and economic systems. In this context, the evaluation of grassland status and grassland management in farming systems is a key–issue for sustainable agriculture. With the arrival of new Earth observation sensors with high spatial and temporal resolutions, it is now possible to study grasslands at fine scale using regular observations over time. The objective of this thesis is to identify grasslands and their management practices using parameters derived from time–series of high spatial resolution (HSR) remote sensing data. For that purpose, several intra–annual time series of HSR optical and Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) satellite images were acquired in order to identify grasslands and three of their management practices: grazing, mowing and mixed…

▼ The United States as a whole is embarking on the historic task of implementing high-speed rail (
HSR) throughout the country in an attempt to improve regional mobility, including congestion at some of the nation’s busiest airports. However, despite the wide
overlapping of service that both air and
HSR provide and the goal of reducing airport congestion, little discourse has occurred on the topic of how these two modes might interact in an intermodal context.
This report explores how air travel and
HSR might cooperate in the US, which is defined as an explicit attempt by the two modes to utilize each other in order to transport a passenger to their final destination. It will document potential benefits of cooperation, survey how cooperation works elsewhere in the world, and investigate the current climate within the US for cooperation, including a review of current
HSR plans and analysis of air travel data. This information will form the basis for suggested airports for the integration of
HSR and air travel, and for how US airlines might utilize
HSR. Lastly,
lessons learned will form a list of best practices to follow in order to better insure a
cooperative and successful relationship between
HSR and air travel.

▼ Transportation projects do not necessarily get evaluated for economic value or impact even though arguably most projects are done to advance the economy in the long run, from inducing travel to improving market access. Those studies that do provide an economic study in their reports do not explain the methodology or critique the economic study process. This thesis takes a look at using the Texas Statewide Analysis (SAM) in combination with the Transportation Economic Development Impact System (TREDIS) to better understand the bearing a transportation project, or group of projects, may have on a region. The overview and critique of the SAM-TREDIS methodology is completed using a few scenarios of groups of projects for the Texas study region, for which one scenario includes the implementation of
HSR in the Texas Triangle. The scenario of high-speed rail is explored as to encourage a future discussion to create a more concrete plan regarding future
HSR. While the outputs of SAM for most Texas transportation scenarios were too subtle in difference between scenarios to create informative TREDIS outputs, they provided an in-depth look in the use of SAM and TREDIS separately and collectively. Overall, this method is useful at looking at future roadways projects that produce a moderately significant change in travel characteristics. Another model, or an improved SAM, is recommended for an accurate
HSR study.

▼ The fragmentation of administrative boundaries is a serious problem in the analysis of social, environmental and economic data. This research focuses on the development of a coordinated approach to the design of administrative boundaries that endeavours to support accurate decision making. Around the world, administrative boundaries have been structured in an uncoordinated manner, limiting data exchange and integration between organisations. The solution proposed in this research adopts the hierarchical reorganisation of administrative boundaries to enhance data integration and data exchange within the spatial data infrastructure (SDI) framework. The SDI is an initiative intended to facilitate access to complete and consistent data sets. One of the most fundamental problems restricting the objectives of the SDI is the fragmentation of data between non-coterminous boundary systems. The majority of administrative boundaries have been constructed by individual agencies to meet individual needs. Examples of the proliferation of different boundary systems include postcodes, census-collector districts, health districts and police districts. Due to the lack of coordination between boundary systems, current technologies for analysing spatial data, such as geographic information systems (GIS), are not reaching their full potential. A review of the current literature reveals that, until now, little has been done to solve this problem. The prototype developed within this research provides a new mechanism for the design of administrative boundaries. The prototype incorporates two algorithms. These are based on HSR theory and administrative-agency constraints and are implemented within the GIS environment. Such an approach is an example of the potential that is available when we link spatial information theory with the SDI framework and disciplinary knowledge.

▼ In this thesis, the influence of soil-structure interaction (SSI) of end-frame bridges for high-speed railways was studied. Impedance functions, representing the SSI, was calculated and analyzed. The impedance functions were applied to end-frame bridge models which were analyzed for use in HSR. A new high-speed railway link is currently being planned in Sweden by the Swedish Transport Administration (Trafikverket). it{Ostlänken} is planned to run between the cities of Stockholm and Linköping with a maximum speed limit of 320km/h. As high-speed traffic induces high dynamic impact on bridges, dynamic analysis to ensure safety and passenger comfort is needed according to Eurocode. Thus, there is a demand of dynamically safe bridges that are also cost-effective. One cost-effective bridge is the soil integrated end-frame bridge, however, there are no design advice in Eurocode today on how to take SSI into consideration. The aim of the thesis has therefore been to investigate if the influence of SSI on end-frame bridges for HSR. This thesis was executed using the frequency domain approach to solve dynamic problems in finite element software. Furthermore, impedance functions have been obtained representing the SSI. Impedance functions take dynamic stiffness and dynamic damping into consideration where the damping consists of two parts: material damping and radiation damping due to energy dissipation in the form of elastic waves. To limit the model size, an absorbing region (AR) was used to mitigate waves originating from the source. The accuracy of impedance functions is dependent on several parameters and demands a great computational capacity to reach, mostly governed by the radiation condition. A parameter study of impedance functions was conducted, including parameters such as geometry, modulus of soil and detail levels. The impedance functions were then attached to bridge models on which trains modelled as moving point loads were applied. Envelopes of the acceleration and displacements have been presented and analyzed. Shear strain checks were made in order to verify the assumption of linear-elastic material behavior of the embankment. By using SSI in form of impedance functions attached to bridge models, numerical results show a great reduction of vibrations in models. The study suggests that a large end-frame, either long or high or both, may reduce acceleration as well as displacements. A stiffer embankment material may further reduce vibrations. Shear strain checks confirm that the assumption of linear-elastic soil behavior was true.

▼ The most important part of any footwear is the sole (or sole and heel) which withstands
all the hannful external factors such as rouglmess of the ground or road, sharp objects, thorns
and stones, heat, dampness and cold during walking. The properties desirable in soling
material, therefore, would be
1. lightness
2. resistance to wear and tear for long service life
3. flexibility/softness for wearing comfort
4. thennal insulation
Rubber soling surpasses all other soling materials in better performance and lower
cost. Because MC sole is soft and very light, and has good abrasion resistance, flex properties
and set behaviour it has become very popular all over the world and demand for better quality
product is ever increasing. Due to the traditional approach adopted by the footwear industry
in foot wear design, the rubber based footwear export surprisingly contributes only a small
percentage. The essence of success for any industry lies in the expansion of the export market.
Microcellular soles are manufactured for the last three decades without much change in the
traditional design and colour pattern. In recent years domestic customers have also started
demanding better quality products. In view of the changing taste of the customer and growing
competition from other countries, substantial improvement in the export potential will require
new base materials for regular or fashion rubber based footwears. The main objective of the
present study is to develop new base materials for making MC soles with good quality, viz.,
light weight, durability and bright colours

▼ Managed turfgrasses provide several benefits including filtering pollutants, cooling their surroundings, generating oxygen, preventing erosion, serving as recreational surfaces, and increasing landscape aesthetics. Intensively managed turfgrass systems, such as on golf courses and sports fields, require more inputs to maintain acceptable conditions. Freshwater use is often excessive on intensively managed turfgrasses to maintain proper plant growth. Drought conditions often limit water availability, especially in regions with limited rainfall. Turf managers tend to over-apply water across large acreage when few localized areas begin to show symptoms of drought. Additionally, turf managers sometimes wrongly identify stressed areas from other factors as ones being moisture-deprived. Advancements such as the use of soil moisture meters have simplified irrigation decisions as an aid to visual inspections for drought stress. While this method enhances detection accuracy, it still provides no solution to increase efficiency. Expanding our current knowledge of turfgrass canopy light reflectance for rapid moisture stress identification can potentially save both time and water resources. The objective of this research was to enhance our ability to identify and predict moisture stress of creeping bentgrass (CBG) and hybrid bermudagrass (HBG) canopies integrated into varying soil textures (USGA 90:10 sand (S), sand loam (SL) and Clay (C)) using light reflectance measurements. Dry-down cycles were conducted under greenhouses conditions collecting soil moisture and light reflectance data every hour from 7 am to 7 pm after saturating and withholding water from established plugs. Moisture stress was most accurately estimated over time using two vegetation indices, the water band index (WBI) and green-to-red ratio index (GRI), with approximately ninety percent accuracy to visible wilt stress. The WBI and GRI predicted moisture stress of CBG in all soil types and HBG in SL and C approximately 14 hours before the grasses reached 50% wilt. While light reflectance varies on exposed soils, our research shows that underlying soils do not interfere with measurements across typical turfgrass stands. This research provides a foundation for future research implementing rapid, aerial measurements of moisture stressed turfgrasses on a broad application of CBG and HBG on constructed or native soils.

▼ Novel thermo-reversible zinc sulphonated ionomers based on styrene butadiene
rubber (SBR), and high styrene rubber (HSH) were synthesized by sulphonation
followed by neutralization with zinc. The sulphonate content of the ionomer was
estimated by using x-ray fluorescence spectroscopy. Presence of sulphonate groups
has been confirmed by FTIR and FTNMR spectra. The TGA results show improvement
in the thermo~oxidative stability of the modified rubber. Both DSC and DMTA studies
show that the incorporation of the ionic groups affect the glass rubber transition of the
base polymer. lntroduction ol ionic functionality in to the base material improved the
physical properties. Retention of the improved physical properties of the novel
ionomers even after three repeated cycles of mixing and molding may be considered
as the evidence for the reprocessability of the ionomer. Effect of particulate fillers
(HAF black, silica and zinc stearate) on the properties of the zinc sulphonated styrene
butadiene rubber ionomer has been evaluated. Incorporation of tillers results in
improvement in mechanical properties. Zinc stearate plays the dual role of
reinforcement and plasticization. The evaluation of dielectric properties of zinc
sulphonated styrene butadiene rubber iorpmers at microwave frequencies reveal that
the materials show conductivity at semiconductor level. The real and imaginary parts
of the complex permittivity increases with increase in ionic functionality. Use of the
38.5 ZnS-SBR ionomer as a compatibiliser for obtaining the technologically compatible
blends from the immiscible SBR/NBR system has been discussed.

▼ Background: Back pain is the most prevalent of musculoskeletal conditions internationally and in Australia with women reporting back pain more frequently than men. Women are higher users of health services than men more generally and tend to use complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) frequently for musculoskeletal conditions. Despite debate around evidence for CAM regarding back pain, CAM is commonly used by back pain sufferers. However, there remain important gaps in our understanding of women’s consultation patterns with CAM practitioners and self-prescribed CAM treatments for back pain.
Methods: The study utilised a Health Services Research (HSR) approach. The sample for the research reported in this thesis was obtained from a sub-study of the Australian Longitudinal Study on Women's Health (ALSWH). In the baseline ALSWH survey (year 1996), women were randomly selected for the study in three age groups, 18-23 years (young cohort), 45-50 years (mid-age cohort) and 70-75 years (older cohort) from the national Medicare database. For the sub-study that this thesis is based on, the participants were chosen from the mid-age cohort of women, who had indicated in the sixth ALSWH survey (2010) that they had experienced back pain. Of the 10,011 women who responded to the sixth ALSWH survey, 1,851 indicated they had experienced back pain and these women were mailed a 50-item sub-study questionnaire. Subsequently 1,620 women were deemed eligible for participating in the sub-study as they confirmed that they had back pain at the time of the sub-study (2011) and 1,310 (80.9%) women returned the completed questionnaire. Alongside the women’s demographics, the survey explored the women’s patterns of consultations with CAM practitioners and self-prescribed CAM treatments, the women’s attitudes toward CAM, the influence of different information sources and communication on the women’s decision-making regarding their use of CAM for back pain. The analyses included Pearson chi-square tests to compare categorical variables and t-tests to compare continuous and categorical variables. Multiple logistic regression models, with backwards-stepwise regression, were employed to determine the significant factors associated with CAM use.
Results: A significant number of women consulted a CAM practitioner (76.4%, n=1,001) and/or self-prescribed CAM treatment (75.2%, n=985) for back pain in the previous twelve months. The most commonly consulted CAM practitioners were massage therapist, chiropractor, acupuncturist, herbalist/naturopath, meditation/yoga practitioner, osteopath and the most commonly self-prescribed CAM treatments were supplements, vitamins/minerals, yoga/meditation, herbal medicines and aromatherapy oils. Women’s attitudes toward CAM as providing greater control over their body/health, perceiving CAM as natural or promoting a holistic approach to health had a significant influence on their choice of CAM for back pain. Women’s decisions on CAM use for back pain were influenced by professional information sources (e.g.,…

▼ RESEARCH QUESTION:
How might the design of a transit interchange inform the experience of movement and promote the use of public transport?
ABSTRACT:
People are instinctively keen to travel. In the past, communities migrated between regions due to seasonal changes or resource scarcity. In modern society, with the advent of mass-transit, getting from one suburb, city or country to another has become quick and simple – often an everyday activity. Because of this, we are leading more nomadic lifestyles, where people are frequently on the move, meeting new people, being social, exploring, or travelling between work, school and home.
We have far surpassed the novelty of air travel, and have entered an age where mass-transit is our current solution for citizens navigating around their cities and countries. It is vital that the design of transport hubs accommodates the requirement for mass-transit, as well as social requirements.
The project looks into the design of a transit hub for Auckland on an appropriate site. The hub accommodates existing modes of transport - Heavy Rail and Bus - along with a Light Rail network, and commuter services connecting to Hamilton – Auckland’s nearest city-neighbour.
The hub design investigates the qualities of the space and how they can enhance the experience for the user. It is performed through explorations of programme and spatial strategies.

▼ The focus of this work is to investigate the dissolution of MW25, a non-radioactive simulant of UK high-level nuclear waste borosilicate glass, and to predict its performance in the near field of a geological repository. A single-pass flow-through (SPFT) experimental system was used to measure the forward dissolution rates of MW25. Experiments were conducted in two parts. Experiment Part 1 considers the dissolution of the waste glass in deionised water at 40 and 90 °C and circum-neutral pH. Experiment Part 2 considers the dissolution of the waste glass in simulant groundwaters, with similar compositions to groundwaters of Callovo-Oxfordian clay (lower-strength sedimentary rock (LSSR)) and Borrowdale Volcanic Group rocks (higher-strength rock (HSR)), at 40 °C and pH 7. The forward dissolution rate measured in deionised water was found to be approximately one order of magnitude higher at 90 °C than at 40 °C. A similar release was observed for Si, Mg and Al at 40 °C and 90 °C, whereas the B, Cs, Na, Li and Mo showed an order of magnitude increase when the temperature was increased from 40 to 90 °C for low q/S values. The activation energy (Ea) of the reactions shows that the dissolution process is a surface phenomenon. At 90 °C the net effect of the processes governing MW25 dissolution led to the preferential release of boron and alkali metals relative to the release of Si during the transient dissolution stage, accompanied by an increase in the concentration of silicic acid. This suggests that the solution activity of silicic acid at a higher temperature has a weak influence on the release of the mobile elements. The forward dissolution rate measured in LSSR simulant groundwater was found to be slightly higher than that measured in HSR simulant groundwater. The dissolution behaviour of MW25 in both groundwaters is consistent with its behaviour in deionised water at 40 °C, with the dissolution rates of elements increasing as flow rates were increased. However, forward dissolution rates measured in the simulant groundwaters were lower than the forward dissolution rates measured in deionised water under these experimental conditions. This is attributable to the interaction of the components of the simulant groundwaters with the glass, as revealed by post-reaction surface analyses, and a consequential lower alkalinity of the leachates collected in the experiments with simulant groundwater than in deionised water. Reactive chemical transport simulations of waste glass dissolution and radionuclide release in a hypothetical near field were conducted over a time span of a million years with GoldSim. The results showed that enclosing the waste glass in a steel canister covered by a copper canister and emplacing the waste package in a granite host rock is optimal for the long-term isolation of the radionuclides. The waste glass was found to play a significant role in the overall performance of the near field. This study features a new method for estimating the surface area of reacted glass powder more accurately than the…

▼ T-cell acute lymphoblastic leukemia (T-ALL) is a neoplastic disorder that develops from a single hematopoietic T-cell precursor that acquired oncogenic anomalies. T-ALL is a heterogeneous disease comprising several clinico-biological entities characterized by distinct underlying genetic defects. In the first part of this work, we attempted to correlate those numerous anomalies with the role of the corresponding non mutated genes or pathways in normal T-cell development. Mutations targeting self-renewal, differentiation, proliferation, survival and death signals cooperate in a multistep process leading to a clinically overt leukemia. Starting from the fortuitous observation by FISH of ABL1 gene amplification in one T-ALL case, we found a new fusion gene, NUP214-ABL1, on amplified episomes in 6% of T-ALL, encoding a constitutively activated chimeric tyrosine kinase. Sensitivity of this oncogenic protein to the tyrosine kinase inhibitor (TKI) imatinib was demonstrated in the T-ALL cell line ALL-SIL carrying the NUP214-ABL1 transcript. Using cytogenetic and molecular analyses, we focused mainly our experimental work on kinase alterations. This class of mutations confers a proliferation advantage to the cell and is frequently observed in cancer, but was only rarely described in T-ALL. The recurrent cryptic NUP214-ABL1 fusion was always amplified, usually extrachromosomally on episomes and/or intrachromosomally in homogeneous staining regions (
hsr). In some T-ALL cases both episomes and
hsr coexisted. In addition, the NUP214-ABL1 rearrangement was usually associated with other genetic abnormalities, i.e. increased TLX1 or TLX3 expression, deletion of the tumor suppressor gene p16 and mutations of NOTCH1, consistent with a multistep pathogenesis of leukemia. The NUP214-ABL1 fusion gene was sometimes only present in a fraction of the leukemic cells (i.e. in subclones), suggesting its relatively late occurrence. We next investigated whether other ABL1 fusions were involved in T-ALL. We identified EML1-ABL1 in a single T-ALL case as a fusion gene also encoding a constitutively activated tyrosine kinase sensitive to imatinib. Again, coexistence with TLX1, p16 and NOTCH1 anomalies was detected. At disease relapse, a transition from EML1-ABL1 to NUP214-ABL1 positivity was observed. However, retrospective screening for TLX1 and p16 demonstrated that aberrations of these genes persisted at the time of hematological remission. This observation suggested that a latent preleukemic clone with a restricted number of mutations evolved to an aggressive clone with the acquisition of EML1-ABL1, defied chemotherapy, and eventually caused relapse after having acquired another kinase mutation, i.e. NUP214-ABL1. Finally, we explored other tyrosine kinase aberrations in T-ALL by performing genome wide array-CGH screening of copy number abnormalities in T-ALL cell lines. We identified and characterized a new transcript in T-ALL cell-lines and T-ALL patients. In conclusion, this work demonstrates a pathological role of ABL1 fusion variants in…

▼ Abstract of Dissertation Presented to the Graduate School of the University of Florida in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy IMPACT OF MENTAL HEALTH DIAGNOSIS AND TREATMENT ON ASTHMA-RELATED SERVICES IN MEDICAID YOUTH WITH ASTHMA By Eric Wayne Jamoom December 2010 Chair: Jeffrey Harman Major: Health Services Research The most common chronic condition among children and adolescents in the United States is asthma. An association between asthma and mental health has been reported by a multitude of studies. However, characterizing, specifying and quantifying the relationships between mental health comorbidities with the delivery of asthma related services have not been accomplished. This study examines asthma related health services in youth with asthma, including assessment of specific factors which may impact asthma-related utilization. Specifically, this study investigates the impact of depression, anxiety and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and the treatment of these conditions on asthma-related expenditures and health service use using a statewide sample of 8,241 youth with asthma between age 6 years and 16 years continuously enrolled in Florida Medicaid over 36 months from January 2002 through December 2004. The current research methodology improves upon prior studies by using individual mental health diagnoses, a larger sample size, and longitudinal data. Four models are used to address the delivery of health services. The first model seeks to explain the effect of ADHD, anxiety, and depression on asthma related use and expenditures. The second model examines the length of mental health diagnosis on asthma-related use and expenditures. The third and fourth models assess the effect of mental health treatment on asthma-related use and expenditures. General findings suggest asthma care for those with anxiety is costly with high utilization across all asthma-related outcomes, indicative of poor coordination. Comorbid depression was associated with greater inpatient service use, but generally less asthma medication fills, suggesting poor asthma adherence and coordination. Comorbid ADHD was associated with lower inpatient use and expenditures, and higher asthma related medication fills and medical claims suggesting better coordination and adherence to medication regimen and coordination of asthma management. Generally, mental health treatment tended to mediate the inpatient utilization for those with mental health conditions towards similar utilization to those without the condition. Depression treatment suggested better adherence, whereas anxiety treatment suggested more inpatient care. Better coordination of asthma management is indicated for those with comorbid anxiety and depression, as pediatricians tend to refer these patients to psychiatric services. ( en )
