▼ Although gun violence is one of the most widely discussed issues in American politics, research funding freezes have hindered the development of public health strategies for its prevention. A substantial majority (approximately two-thirds) of annual gun deaths in the United States are suicides, but most political efforts to prevent gun violence focus on homicide. In this study, I evaluated the effectiveness of handgun permit-to- purchase (PTP) laws at preventing firearm suicide. PTP requirements mandate that all potential handgun purchasers at certified sellers must present a permit or license issued by the state. I used a county-level Poisson model controlling for several relevant covariates to estimate the relative risk of firearm suicide one through 35 years after the passage of a state-level PTP requirement. I also tested the popular theory that prevented firearm suicides will manifest as suicides by other means by running the same model with non-firearm suicide as the dependent variable. I found that time since PTP passage was significantly associated with lower firearm suicide rates and that the relative risk by year-since-passage exhibited a pattern that was consistent with my theoretical expectations. Counterintuitively, I also found that PTP requirements had a significant protective effect against non-firearm suicide, a result that suggests that my analysis was subject to unaccounted-for confounding. I ran several sensitivity analyses, which were able substantially clarify the effect of PTP requirements on firearm suicide from the theoretically implausible effect on suicide by all other means I had identified. This study contributes relatively robust evidence to the growing body of literature supporting gun control as a means of suicide prevention, but it also underscores the need for the development of more rigorous data sources and methodologies in the field of gun violence prevention research. ▼ In the spring of 2017, I approached friend and writer Mickey Osthimer about collaborating on text for a song cycle. I was concerned about questions of identity, especially in America—why and how do certain ideologies lay “claim” to American values? Are protesters less representative of our values than police or government? More? Why do we ignore certain sub–communities, uphold others, and mourn or empathize with them accordingly? What emerged from our discussions was a series of poems and prose selections about community, identity, memory, and trauma. Some of the text deals with childhood and nostalgia, while we culled other excerpts from previous essays Mickey had written for a literature blog. In total, they depict a portrait of how we build identity in childhood, and how that identity splinters in the face of violence—specifically, gun violence. Over the course of the composition process, this topic grew ever–more relevant. While writing, the number of American school shootings since 2013 surged past 300. Among those was the 2018 Marjory Stoneman Douglass High School shooting in Parkland, FL, which gave rise to theMarchForOurLives campaign and the public protest of high school students. (https://everytownresearch.org) Simultaneously, America faced and continues to face an epidemic of unarmed or legally armed people of color dying in police custody or after police shootings, including Stephon Clark, killed during the revision process of this piece. The groundswell of protest against this recurring trend extends back to the 2013 trial of George Zimmerman in the shooting death of Trayvon Martin, and the 2014 shooting death of Michael Brown at the hands of Ferguson, MO police officer Darren Wilson—respectively, these events gave birth and support to the ongoing #BlackLivesMatter movement, addressing another face of gun violence in America. ▼ This thesis explores the lived experience of members of a little-studied group, the survivors of gun violence. Although gun violence is a topic of intense interest and discussion around the world, the focus tends to be on mortality, with little consideration given to people who are shot and do not die. The Guatemalan wheelchair NGO Transitions reports that, among adults, the single most common reason for needing a wheelchair is spinal cord injury (SCI) caused by gunshot. This suggests a very serious impact of gun violence in terms of disability and its accompanying challenges in a low-resource context like Guatemala. The study set out to investigate the phenomenon of living with SCI caused by gunshot. No scholarly research, whether quantitative or qualitative, has been published on people who survive being shot in Guatemala. Violence is ranked by the World Health Organization as the third leading cause of spinal cord injury, but it is barely mentioned in global reviews of SCI research. This is because the low- and middle-income countries most affected by violence do not tend to be included in global reviews. However, a search of the Latin American literature reveals gunshot to be the primary cause of SCI in some studies from Honduras, Brazil and Colombia. This may also be true in Guatemala, which is similar to these three countries in terms of crime and violence. Meanwhile, the published qualitative research on the experience of gunshot survivors is mostly limited to studies of current or former gang members in the US, a context very different from Guatemala. In order to gain a deep understanding of the experience of people who are shot and survive with SCI, this study took a qualitative approach, based on semi-structured interviews and thematic content analysis. The participants’ experiences are analysed in terms of six themes: hospital and health, justice, economic impact, family, religious faith, and disability identity and wellbeing. The findings highlight the serious impact of poverty on health and mobility, the common experience of severe and preventable secondary health problems, as well as the key role of family support and religious faith in these survivors’ lives. This research contributes to an understanding of the immediate and long-term impacts of gun violence, and the need for improved policies and services for crime victims and people with spinal cord injury in Guatemala. The recommendations could inform policy (eg crime victims assistance), programs (eg education for SCI patients, their families and health workers), and public awareness in Guatemala. Further research is recommended into the experience of gun violence survivors and their families as well as the economic impact of gun violence. Better data collection is recommended in areas including gun deaths, non-fatal injuries, circumstances of shooting, types of weapons used, police investigations, prosecutions and convictions.

▼ This dissertation analyzed how the media on both sides of the U.S.-Mexico border portrayed the issue of gun trafficking’s into Mexico and its impact on Mexico’s border violence. National newspapers from both sides of the U.S.-Mexico border were analyzed from January 2009 through January 2012, The New York Times for the U.S. and El Universal for Mexico, which resulted in a sample of 602 newspaper articles. Qualitative research methods were utilized to collect and analyze the data, specifically content analysis. Drawing on a theoretical framework of social problems and framing this study addressed how gun trafficking along the U.S.-Mexico border impacted the drug related violence that is ongoing in Mexico, how gun trafficking was portrayed as a social problem by the media, and how the media depicted the victims of drug related violence. This study revealed six framing devices, “the blame game,” “worthy and unworthy victims,” “positive aspects of gun trafficking,” “negative aspects of gun trafficking,” “indirect mention of gun trafficking,” and “direct mention of gun trafficking” that were utilized by The New York Times and El Universal to discuss and frame the issue gun trafficking into Mexico and its impact on Mexico’s border violence. Gun trafficking into Mexico was found to have met all three of Jamrozik and Nocella’s criteria for a social problem. It had a societal origin in the media of 2008, constituted a threat toward the freedoms and values of the citizens of Mexico, and was found to be amendable to solution through cooperation between the U.S-Mexican governments. In the end, this dissertation understands that gun trafficking into Mexico along with the supply and demand of drugs are social problems that needs to be addressed by both the American and Mexican governments in order to prevent further drug related violence. Det svenska samhället har under de senaste åren bevittnat en förändring gällande samhällsvåldets karaktär och kontext. Det finns ett behov av effektiva preventiva åtgärder, vilket i sin tur kräver kunskap gällande det aktuella ämnet. Det huvudsakliga syftet med denna studie var därför att undersöka vilka möjliga faktorer som kan vara bidragande till samhällsvåldets eskalering med fokus på dess förändrade karaktär och kontext, med avgränsning på makronivå. Undersökningen utgick ifrån en kvalitativ ansats med semistrukturerade intervjuer som datainsamlingsmetod. Resultatet visar att orsakerna till samhällsvåldets kontext- och karaktärsförändring är mångfacetterade. Flertalet faktorer har betydelse för samhällsvåldets utveckling. De faktorer studien belyser är organiseringen inom svenska institutionen, förändringar i den kriminella miljön, narkotika samt media. Resultatet visar att dessa faktorer samspelar med varandra där organiseringen av Sveriges institutioner har en stor påverkan på hur de andra faktorerna uttrycker sig i samhället.

Swedish society has witnessed a change in recent years regarding the nature and context of community violence. There is a need for effective preventive measures, which in turn requires knowledge of the subject in question. The main purpose of this study was therefore to investigate what possible factors may be contributing to the escalation of community violence with focus on its changed character and context, with a definition at the macro level. The study was based on a qualitative approach with semi-structured interviews as a data collection method. The result shows that the causes of community violence´s context and character change are multifaceted. Several factors are important for the development of community violence. The factors the study highlights are the organization within the Swedish institution, changes in the criminal environment, drugs and the media. The results show that these factors interact with each other, where the organization of Sweden´s institutions has a major impact in how the other factors are expressed in society.

▼ This dissertation analyzes Black gun violence and homicide victimization in Toronto from a health equity and critical race perspective rather than prevailing criminological theories. Young Black men in Toronto are estimated to be five times more likely to become victims of homicidal violence (Gartner & Thompson, 2004). Utilizing a publication-based dissertation format, the first manuscript (Chapter 2) highlights a declining public safety of young Black men over three decades and questions why this phenomenon is not regarded as a public health crisis. It identifies some key public health considerationsrelated to violence prevention, early intervention, and treatment. The theoretical framework (Chapter 3) contextualizes core assumptions of criminological theories with striking inequities across key social determinants of health, significant intersectionalities, and persistent patterns of systemic racism. The second manuscript (Chapter 4) applies a Critical Race Theoretical (CRT) framework to the available literature. CRT highlights the ongoing relevance of systemic racism to the current framing of Black gun-violence by the media, education, and criminal justice system. The third manuscript (Chapter 5) explores potential pathways from experiencing structural violence to the increased risk of homicide victimization. The implementation of the politically motivated War on Drugs compounds risks and vulnerabilities associated with the key determinants of socioeconomic status – especially because of over-policing and excessive incarceration. The fourth manuscript (Chapter 6) argues that the War on Drugs (WOD) approach has strengthened systemic anti-Black racism across key sectors of society. The fifth manuscript (Chapter 7) analyzes an 11-year period (2004-2014) and finds Black homicide rates to be highest in neighbourhoods with intersecting socioeconomic disadvantage and a high proportion of Black residents. However, neighbourhoods of less socioeconomic disadvantage with smaller proportions of Black residents also have some of the highest Black homicide rates – probably due to racial stigmatization. The sixth and final manuscript (Chapter 8) describes dominant public stigmatizations, as well as health promotion potential in Afrocentric resiliency building. The chapter elucidates how public racial stigmatization drives and sustains Black homicide victimization (BHV) through self-stigmatization. Afrocentrism provides an alternative narrative with which to counter dominant deficit narratives and engender agency in individuals and communities. ▼ Introduction: African Americans are disproportionately impacted by firearm injuries and death. For example, it is the leading cause of death for young African American males. Much of the firearm violence policy literature has focused on firearm violence prevention policies and programs for the general population. These studies have focused on the banning and prohibition of firearms, especially among the mentally ill or those who have otherwise been deemed unfit to carry a firearm. Fewer studies have focused on racial/ethnic minority populations that are adversely and disproportionately impacted by firearm violence. In addition to the creation of culturally-tailored firearm violence prevention programs, legislation that is passed to specifically address firearm violence disparities may also be an effective strategy to reduce this racial/ethnic disparity. Purpose: Organizations such as the Congressional Black Caucus and the National Black Caucus of State Legislators have historically advocated for policies and legislation that promote the health and overall well-being of African Americans. Thus the purpose of this study was to collect baseline data on African American legislators’ perceptions regarding firearm violence in the African American community. Methods: A cross-sectional study of African American legislators (n=612) was conducted to investigate the research questions. Of the 612 questionnaires mailed, 12 were not deliverable, and 170 were returned. A response rate of 28% was sufficient based on a power analysis. Utilizing a 3 wave mailing process, African American legislators were invited to participate in the study. In addition to the survey, participants received a personalized signed cover letter and a self-addressed return envelope with paid postage. Results: The majority (88%) of African American legislators perceived firearm violence to be very serious among African Americans. Few (10%) African American legislators perceived that addressing legislative issues would be an effective strategy in reducing firearm violence among African Americans. The majority (72%) of African American legislators perceived the most effective strategy to reducing firearm violence in the African American community should focus on addressing societal issues (e.g. crime and poverty).After adjusting for the number of perceived barriers, the number of perceived benefits was a significant predictor of African American legislators perceived effectiveness of firearm violence prevention legislation for 8 of the 24 potential firearm violence prevention legislative bills. Conclusions: African American legislators are respected opinion leaders in most African American communities. As leaders with legislative influence, African American legislators could be key advocates of firearm violence prevention policies aimed at reducing firearm violence disparities. ▼ This paper was written to examine the impact of dedicated university police departments relative to reporting Clery statistics, fundamental information that prospective students and their parents can use in selecting an institution of higher education. The prospect of gaining knowledge and bettering one’s life occurs best when taking place in a safe and transparent environment. While college and university campuses are not immune to crime, similar to society as a whole, they are statistically safer places by which learning can occur. The college years are instrumental in shaping the lives and mindset of America’s youth by exposing them to a variety of cultural experiences and divergent beliefs. The higher education marketplace has become an exceedingly competitive environment wherein students, parents and society have an expectation of a safe environment. Campus administrators can best evaluate, control and mitigate issues if they are reported and data is analyzed to prevent similar instances in the future. Reporting and data acquisition is best accomplished by dedicated, trained and honorable administrators who desire to truly understand criminal activities occurring at their establishments. An in-depth examination of literature concerning Clery statistics reveals the significant impact reported crime has on campuses of institutions of higher education (IHE’s). This data can be utilized to influence and affect change in preventing crime on college and university campuses. This paper specifically focuses on the difference in reported data from IHE’s with dedicated university police departments versus IHE’s without dedicated university police departments. This study revealed that the most prevalent reported crimes were disciplinary actions followed by arrests and criminal offenses. Paired samples t tests were conducted and determined that there was a statistical difference in the amount of crimes reported by IHE’s with a dedicated university police department versus IHE’s without a dedicated university police department for the crime categories of criminal offenses, VAWA offenses, arrests, disciplinary actions and fires. Hate crimes was the singular crime category analyzed that did not reveal a difference in the crime reporting for IHE’s with or without a dedicated university police department.

Métodos - Foram obtidos dados sobre disparos de armas de fogo de: Boletins de Ocorrência da Polícia Militar; prontuários do Hospital de Clínicas de Uberlândia - 2001 e 2002; laudos de lesão corporal e necropsias do Posto Médico Legal - 2000 a 2003. Resultados - As ocorrências foram principalmente em bairros periféricos; 171 (53,61%) em vias públicas, 72 (22,57%) em residências, mais de 1/3 em finais de semana; dos disparos para os quais os dados foram obtidos, em 110 (75,34%) a arma utilizada foi o revólver e foram motivados principalmente por discussão (46; 29,68%) e acerto de contas/vingança (40; 25,81%); de 94 (26,40%) casos cujo dado foi obtido, em 60 (63,83%) o agressor foi classificado como cidadão comum; em 130 (67,01%) casos os agressores fugiram. As percentagens aproximadas de vítimas do sexo masculino, de 10 a 39 anos e solteiras foram de, respectivamente, 90%, 80% e 70%. Nos casos fatais, os locais mais atingidos foram o tronco (257; 93,12%) e o crânio (150; 54,35%) lesionando sobretudo o cérebro (128; 46,38%) e os pulmões (125; 45,29%). ▼ This final project and thesis describe gun violence in America through a statistical lens, emphasizing the implementation of graphic design to evoke a response from the audience. Advanced typography, grid design, vector theory and application, 3-D and environmental graphics, color theory, lighting design, and video have been employed in an attempt to bring the statistics to life and to engage audiences in sane conversation on a particularly volatile subject. There are often visceral opposing views when the subject of guns, especially handguns, is brought up in modern American society. Studies are cited that show gun violence data, the Second Amendment to the United States Constitution is bandied about, and arguments ensue of whether guns kill people or people kill people. One side portends that the problem is exaggerated because responsible gun owners do not contribute to the problem while the opposing side believes that gun violence is a serious public health threat, and the only safe gun is no gun at all. Growing up in a family that owned guns (both handguns and rifles), my view of American gun violence was neither pro nor con for the longest time. I was raised in what I consider to be a normal, middle-class suburban environment. My father was a bluecollar worker, my mother worked as a legal secretary until the onset of health issues, and I attended elementary, middle, and high school in Rockville, Maryland. I grew up seeing President Kennedy assassinated, his brother Robert Kennedy slain, and Martin Luther King and Malcolm X gunned down. Never one to be involved in politics, I didn’t pay much attention to the gun violence taking place in the 60s—I didn’t live in that circle, so why should I care? Then May 4, 1970 changed my view of guns. May 4th was a Monday, and it was the day that twenty-eight of the more than seventy Ohio National Guardsmen called to Kent State University fired their rifles and pistols into a crowd of student protesters, killing nine and injuring thirteen. The debate over cause and blame continues to this day, but one fact remains—a 13-second fusillade of bullets ruined lives and altered my belief system in ways I still have yet to fully comprehend. Gun violence has touched me personally as well. I have a long-time friend who was shot in his workplace during an armed robbery. My friend almost died, and he changed in ways I could not comprehend. I couldn’t bring myself to imagine what he felt seeing the barrel of a handgun pointed at him, the searing hot pain of the shot, or the aftermath of a psyche cleaved by gun violence. I still can’t fathom what he’s been through. For years I bounced back and forth on both sides of the gun debate fence. After my parents had retired to the foothills of the Great Smoky Mountains in North Carolina, the family gun tradition continued. My dad owned a hunting rifle, a shotgun, and three pistols. This thesis is based on an ethnographic study conducted in a split grade five and six classroom in Toronto during the 1985/86 academic year. Data were collected through participatory observation, as well as through individual and focus group interviews. A group of eight activist African-Canadian high school students, as well as 26 Euro- Canadian “drop-backs” were also interviewed. The time during which I conducted the study was a period of intensive education activism of parents and the community in Toronto. I was interested in determining whether or not, and this activism was reflected at the school level, and if it was reflected, how. I also wanted to examine whether or not the historically supportive auxiliary role that parents played during this period was elevated to more substantive and meaningful active involvement in the education of their children during the last half of the 1980s. This study shows that activities in the classroom were driven by pre-packaged curriculum materials and were implemented with very few modifications. Coupled with teacher-centred practice, this closed the door for any diversifying opportunities that could have found their way into the classroom, not only from the homes of the children and the school community, but also from critics of the use of prepackaged material and, most importantly, from the students themselves. Furthermore, teacher-centred classroom discourse pushed students to develop a cynical attitude towards schooling. Having no say in what or how they were taught provided the children with few choices but to develop a coping mechanism of passive resistance. Their short-term survival strategies included appearing as though they were striding along, but not embracing their school experiences fully. By the same token, they were not challenged to think critically, to evaluate or to problem-solve. A link was also established between the students’ passive resistance at the elementary level with ‘fading out’ or ‘dropping out’ and successful resistance at the high school level.
