Esta dissertação aborda a manifestação contemporânea das turmas de bate-bolas do carnaval do Rio de Janeiro. As turmas de bate-bolas podem ser compreendidas como grupos de foliões que se fantasiam e se comportam de maneiras peculiares. Em relação à visibilidade que outras manifestações carnavalescas alcançam como é o caso, por exemplo, do desfile das escolas de samba pode-se considerar que há poucos estudos voltados para os bate-bolas. Dentre os estudos sobre os bate-bolas, percebe-se uma predominância da compreensão do conceito de cultura popular como o campo da tradição, da pureza e da autonomia cultural, em relação à cultura de massa. Este trabalho propõe uma abordagem diferente da convencional, entendendo a manifestação das turmas de bate-bolas contemporâneas pelas suas transformações e diferenças. Para isto, baseia-se nos pressupostos dos Estudos Culturais, que constituem uma disciplina para a qual a impureza cultural é o critério fundamental de estudo da cultura popular, que é vista como uma arena de disputa de significados simbólicos. De forma a aplicar estes preceitos à situação atual das turmas de bate-bolas, este trabalho analisa as diferentes maneiras pelas quais os fantasiados formulam as suas visões particulares da brincadeira, especialmente através das configurações de elementos materiais e de elementos performáticos associados a diferentes tipos de comportamentos relacionados aos bate-bolas contemporâneos.

This research addresses the contemporary manifestation of the groups of bate-bolas of the carnival in Rio de Janeiro. The groups of bate-bolas can be understood as groups of individuals which disguise themselfs and behave in peculiar ways. Regarding the visibility that other events carnival reach - as is the case, for example, of Escolas de Samba - it can be considered that there are few studies focused on the bate-bolas. Among the studies on the bate-bolas, realizes is a predominance of understanding of the concept of popular culture as the field of tradition, the purity and cultural autonomy, in relation to mass culture. This research proposes an approach different from conventional, meaning a manifestation of the groups of bate-bolas for their contemporary transformations and differences. For this, based on the assumptions of Cultural Studies, which are a subject which the cultural impurity is the fundamental criterion of study of popular culture, which is seen as an arena of dispute symbolic meanings. In order to implement these precepts to the current situation of the groups of bate-bolas, this work examines the various ways in which the revelers formulate their visions of private joke, especially throughing of materials and configurations of elements of elements associated performer a different types of behaviors related to bate-bolas contemporaries.

Estudos prévios em vários desportos coletivos sugerem que a análise da dinâmica da bola pode discriminar o sucesso ofensivo das equipas. Assim, o objetivo do presente trabalho foi analisar a dinâmica das trajetórias da bola na aproximação à baliza, em sequências ofensivas terminadas com e sem finalização durante situações de jogo reduzido de Futebol. Foram analisadas três situações de jogo reduzido no formato GR+5x5+GR, disputados por 12 jogadores de elite do escalão de sub-19. A trajetória da bola foi obtida através de filmagem e digitalização com recurso ao software TACTO, e posterior calibração e reconstrução através do procedimento 2D-DLT. Para todas as sequências ofensivas, calculou-se a variação da distância e da velocidade de aproximação da bola à baliza. Com base nestas variáveis foi feita uma análise qualitativa inicial com recurso a gráficos de fase (phase plots). Esta análise preliminar sugeriu a existência de diferenças na amplitude da variação da velocidade de aproximação da bola à baliza entre sequências ofensivas com e sem finalização, que posteriormente foram estatisticamente confirmadas. Além disso, as jogadas com finalização demonstraram valores inferiores no número de passes por jogada e na sua duração. A análise da estrutura de autocorrelação demonstrou ainda que as jogadas com finalização evidenciaram maior dependência temporal, sugerindo menor variabilidade e aleatoriedade da trajetória de aproximação da bola à baliza.

Previous studies on several collective sports suggest that analysis of ball dynamics can dictate the teams’ offensive success. Therefore, the goal of this work was to study the dynamics of ball trajectories when approaching the goal area through offensive plays that end with or without shooting during small sided games situations. Three small sided games situations were studied on the GR+5x5+GR format that were played by 12 elite players from the sub-19 tier. The ball trajectory was obtained through films and scans using the TACTO software and, afterwards, through calibration and reconstruction using procedure 2D-DLT. For all game plays it was calculated both the distance and speed variations of the ball when approaching the goal area. These variables were then used as a basis for an initial qualitative analysis through phase plots. This preliminary analysis suggested the existence of differences in the amplitude of the ball’s velocity variation when approaching the goal area between plays with and without shooting which, subsequently, was statistically confirmed. Furthermore, plays with shooting shown significantly lower values of number and duration of passes per play. The analysis of the autocorrelation structure revealed that plays with shooting present higher temporal dependence which suggest a lower variation and randomness of the ball’s trajectory when approaching the goal area.

▼ Objectivo: Este estudo procurou determinar os efeitos de dois programas de treino de força explosiva com a mesma carga de trabalho (i.e., o mesmo impulso mecânico) sobre a velocidade e distância de lançamento em jogadores competitivos de pólo aquático. Métodos: Participaram neste estudo 14 jogadores da categoria absoluta de pólo aquático (idade 20,4 ± 5,6 anos, peso 79,3 ± 15,4 kg, altura 180,6 ± 6,7 cm e envergadura 185,2 ± 8,3 cm) divididos em dois grupos homogeneamente indexados a um tipo de treino específico. O programa de treino foi composto por 2 sessões semanais durante 8 semanas consecutivas com a mesma carga de trabalho (i.e., o mesmo impulso mecânico). Um grupo (G1) realizou 3 séries de 6 repetições com a bola medicinal de 3kg, enquanto o segundo (G2) completou 1 série de 9 repetições com a bola de 3kg e mais 3 séries de 14 repetições com a bola oficial de PA. Foram executados testes da velocidade e distância de lançamento, antes e depois do período de treino, com a bola medicinal de 3Kg, de 1kg e por último com a bola de PA dentro de água. Resultados: Ambos os grupos aumentaram significativamente a velocidade de lançamento com as bolas de 1 e de 3kg, do primeiro para o segundo momento de avaliação. A distância também aumentou significativamente, excepto o G1 na bola de 1Kg. Contudo, no lançamento da bola de PA dentro de água, embora se observasse um incremento na velocidade da mesma, este não foi significativo. Não se verificaram diferenças significativas na velocidade e na distância de lançamento entre os grupos nas diferentes bolas, excepto na velocidade e na distância de lançamento da bola de 3kg, tendo o G1 obtido valores mais elevados. Conclusão: Ambos os programas de treino foram eficazes para o aumento significativo da velocidade e distância de lançamento das bolas medicinais de 1 e de 3kg. A falta de especificidade do lançamento a duas mãos por cima da cabeça pode explicar a ausência de ganhos significativos na velocidade de lançamento da bola de PA dentro de água. ▼ This thesis mainly comprises two parts. Both parts are related with Howe's dual reductive pair theory. Part I of the thesis gives a description of the full spectrum of the dual pair Spin(10, 2) x SL(2, R) in E7,3, the exception Lie group of type E7 with split real rank 3. As E7,3 is Hermitian symmetric, we have a detailed description of the minimal representation in [7]. Also, we know the correspondence of infinitesimal characters for dual pairs in [18]. The information of infinitesimal character and lowest K-types can nearly determine almost all representations occurring in the spectrum. Finally, we can see that the representations of E7,3 which occur in the spectrum are highest weight modules. Part II of the thesis is devoted to generalizing Borcherds result to the dual pair (U(1, 1), U(n, 1)). Let's briefly describe the content of each part. In Chapter 1, we will give some preparations work for Chapter 2 , and the embedding of the dual pair Spin(10, 2) x SL(2, R) into E7,3. Also, we will set some notations here. In Chapter 2, we focus on the description of the spectrum of Spin(10, 2) x SL(2, R), which is the restriction of the minimal representation of E7,3. In fact, we can view (Spin(10, 2), SL(2, R)) as a reductive dual pair inside E7,3. This description gives an explicit example of Howe correspondence. In Chapter 3, we will give some elementary results on theta correspondence and the Weil representation. In this chapter, we will mainly give some explanations on Borcherds' result. For example, the construction of the theta kernel, and what's more, the Fourier expansion developed by Borcherds. This Fourier expansion is similar to the Fourier-Jacobi expansion for Siegel modular forms on Sp(2, R). We can view it as a natural generalization of Saito-Kurokawa lifting to higher dimension. In Chapter 4, we will construct a theta function for the dual pair (U(1, 1), U(n, 1)) from the Schrodinger model. Then after setting some notations on the Hermitian symmetric space for U(n, 1), we will give a description of the Fourier-Jacobi expansion of the lifting.

▼ This thesis is divided into the following three parts. Chapter 1: Realising the projective representations of Sn We derive an explicit description of the genuine projective representations of the symmetric group S_n using Dirac cohomology and the branching graph for the irreducible genuine projective representations of S_n. In [15] Ciubotaru and He, using the extended Dirac index, showed that the characters of the projective representations of S_n are related to the characters of elliptic graded modules. We derive the branching graph using Dirac theory and combinatorics relating to the cohomology of Borel varieties B_e of g. We use Dirac cohomology to construct an explicit model for the projective representations. We also describe Vogan's morphism for Hecke algebras in type A using spectrum data of the Jucys-Murphy elements. Chapter 2: Dirac cohomology of the Dunkl-Opdam subalgebra We define a new presentation for the Dunkl-Opdam subalgebra of the rational Cherednik algebra. This presentation uncovers the Dunkl-Opdam subalgebra as a Drinfeld algebra. The Dunkl-Opdam subalgebra is the first natural occurrence of a non-faithful Drinfeld algebra. We use this fact to define Dirac cohomology for the DO subalgebra. We formalise generalised graded Hecke algebras and extend a Langlands classification to generalised graded Hecke algebras. We then describe an equivalence between the irreducibles of the Dunkl-Opdam subalgebra and direct sums of graded Hecke algebras of type A. This equivalence commutes with taking Dirac cohomology. Chapter 3: Functors relating nonspherical principal series We define an extension of the affine Brauer algebra called the type B/C affine Brauer algebra. This new algebra contains the hyperoctahedral group, and it naturally acts on End_K(X ⊗ V ^⊗k). We study functors F_μ,k from the category of admissible O(p; q) or Sp_2n(R) modules to representations of the type B/C affine Brauer algebra. Furthermore, these functors take non-spherical principal series modules to principal series modules for the graded Hecke algebra of type D_k, C_n-k or B_n-k.

▼ A educação contemporânea pressupõe a formação de alunos que desenvolvam sua capacidade de pensar, refletir, propor soluções sobre problemas e questões atuais, trabalhar e cooperar uns com os outros, não se limitando a formar alunos apenas que dominem determinados conteúdos, mas sim que sejam construtores de seu próprio conhecimento, por meio da pesquisa. Para que o aluno se constitua como pesquisador necessitamos possibilitar vivências que permitam a formação de conceitos, através da leitura. Partindo deste princípio, deve a escola favorecer uma constante atividade investigativa, atuando na formação de seres críticos e participativos, conscientes de seu papel como sujeitos de mudanças sociais. A pesquisa e a leitura são estratégias de ensino que podem colaborar para a formação de alunos participativos; o computador é uma ferramenta que pode possibilitar ao aluno desenvolver essas competências. Dessa forma, esta pesquisa se ocupar-se-á em analisar como os alunos do Ensino Médio constroem conceitos literários a partir do site do NUPILL, sua postura frente à leitura de textos literários digitalizados e o movimento de pesquisa do qual participaram. Este estudo está vinculado ao Grupo de Pesquisa: Educação - Cultura, Escola e Educação Criadora, cuja linha de Pesquisa é Cultura, Tecnologias e Processos Psicossociais de Aprendizagem e Desenvolvimento. A pesquisa está sendo desenvolvida em decorrência do projeto interinstitucional Autores, obras e acervos literários catarinenses em meio digital, implementado em parceria com a UFSC, UNIVALI e UNIVILLE. Esta pesquisa sustenta-se no tripé Leitura Digital, Formação de Conceitos e Pesquisa e foi desenvolvida com uma turma de alunos do 3 ano do Ensino Médio da Escola de Educação Básica Davi Pedro Espíndola de Barra Velha - SC. A metodologia da pesquisa é qualitativa. O instrumento de coleta de dados é o Chat/Bate-papo, ocorrido entre os alunos sujeitos da pesquisa com pesquisadores das instituições supracitadas e também alunos do Ensino Médio da Escola de Educação Básica Alexandre Guilherme Figueiredo de Balneário Piçarras SC. Buscou-se respaldo teórico principalmente em Vigotski (1993), Demo (2004) e Neitzel (2009). Esta pesquisa apontou os seguintes resultados: a) A leitura em meio digital, especificamente o banco de dados disponibilizado pela biblioteca literária do NUPILL, é um recurso que pode ampliar as possibilidades da escola em promover a literatura e ampliar as possibilidades de formação de leitores; b) As poesias em meio eletrônico disponíveis no NUPILL foram recebidas como novidade e sua leitura alçou os alunos à pesquisa em outros sites; c) A metodologia de pesquisa na rede possibilitou aos alunos autonomia e auto-regulação da aprendizagem, ambas percebidas durante o chat; d) Os alunos que participaram do chat indicaram que a navegação no site do NUPILL poderia ser mais facilitada se os textos como poesias, crônicas e contos fossem melhor organizados no site, sugerindo um índice que possibilitasse a eles, de forma mais fácil, a identificação do texto procurado;… Advisors/Committee Members: Adair de Aguiar Neitzel, Tania Regina Raitz, Taiza Mara Rauen Moraes.

A Internet faz parte do cotidiano da sociedade e traz consigo relações comunicativas e sociais que requerem estudos que possam explicar o estabelecimento desse novo canal no desenvolvimento humano. A partir do tema Descontinuidades na conversação: as reformulações na constituição do diálogo do chat esta pesquisa fundamenta-se, numa perspectiva sincrônica, na sondagem da interação por meio da linguagem produzida durante a interação mediada pelo computador. O corpus desta pesquisa consta de duas amostras documentadas a partir da sala temática denominada Problemas brasileiros na qual os interactantes, espontaneamente, dialogam por escrito. Investigamos alguns aspectos da comunicação mediada pelo computador com o intuito de corroborar com registros científicos que apontem algumas regularidades no processamento da interação síncrona que é realizada por meio de uma linguagem escrita com evidentes marcas da oralidade. Nesta pesquisa, apoiamo-nos teoricamente na tendência sociointeracionista dos estudos lingüísticos. Buscamos estudar o corpus extraído da Internet a partir da aplicação de teorias levantadas no conjunto das obras que envolvem a Análise da Conversação e que tratam da organização tópica e das estratégias de reformulação textuais utilizadas pelos falantes. Na tentativa de garantir a intercompreensão do texto conversacional e a construção da relação social no ambiente de interação virtual, os usuários do chat procedem ao uso da língua, baseando-se em seus conhecimentos lingüísticos provenientes de suas experiências como falantes nas diversas situações de comunicação face a face

The Internet belongs to the quotidian of the society and it brings communicative and social references that request studies that can explain the establishment of this new support in the human development. From the theme Discontinued in the conversation: the reformulations in the constitution of the dialogue in the chat this research investigates, in a synchronous perspective, in the exploration in the interaction by means the language produced during the computer-mediated communication. The corpus in this study consists of two documented samples as of the thematic chat named Brazilian problems in which the interectants, spontaneously, dialogue in written. We investigate some aspects of the computer-mediated communication with the intention of corroborating with the scientific records that point to some regularities in the processing of the synchrounous interaction that is accomplished by means of the written language with evident marks from orality. In this study, we base theoreticaly in the socialinteractionist tendency from the linguistic studies. We investigate the extracted corpus from the Internet as of the application of the built theories in the set of the works that involves Analysis of Conversation and that deals with the topic organization and of the strategies of textual reformulation used by the speakers. Este trabalho tem como finalidade promover uma investigaÃÃo acerca da utilizaÃÃo do bate-papo na Internet na EducaÃÃo. Cada vez mais o bate-papo vem sendo utilizado em cursos a distÃncia, como tambÃm em instituiÃÃes de ensino, para algumas finalidades educativas, como por exemplo, proporcionar interaÃÃo entre os participantes. A partir de uma experiÃncia vivida na Faculdade de EducaÃÃo â UFC, observamos que era possÃvel utilizar este recurso em sala de aula. O objetivo principal da pesquisa Ã verificar quais contribuiÃÃes pedagÃgicas o bate-papo oferece para professores e alunos. Pretendemos especificar quais habilidades sÃo desenvolvidas quando usamos este recurso e as semelhanÃas e diferenÃas com relaÃÃo a momentos e situaÃÃes que acontecem em aulas presenciais e a distÃncia. Durante esta pesquisa, participamos de alguns bate-papos educativos e dentre estes, selecionamos nove para anÃlise deste trabalho. Observamos algumas situaÃÃes pertinentes a uma atividade pedagÃgica, entre elas podemos citar: participaÃÃo dos alunos durante as discussÃes realizadas no bate-papo; interaÃÃo (colaborativa e cooperativa) entre professor e alunos que enriquece a aprendizagem; quatro momentos de discussÃo proporcionados pelo bate-papo: apreensÃo (leitura de mensagem), seleÃÃo (interpretaÃÃo), compreensÃo (aspectos crÃticos sobre a informaÃÃo) e processamento de informaÃÃes (reflexÃo). Relatamos a partir das nossas experiÃncias, quais foram as possibilidades educativas encontradas no bate-papo - como por exemplo, colaboraÃÃo e cooperaÃÃo entre os sujeitos envolvidos na discussÃo - mostrando como Ã possÃvel trabalhar com esta tecnologia e, principalmente, o retorno pedagÃgico, do qual tanto o professor quanto o aluno poderÃo usufruir.

This work aims to elicit some discussion on the pedagogical use of Internet chat. Chat sessions have been frequently used with educational goals in distance learning courses, as well as in teaching institutions to provide interaction between the learners. Starting from an experience with chat at the College of Education â UFC, we could observe that it was possible to use this resource in the classroom. The main objective research is to verify which pedagogical contributions the chat sessions offer to teachers and students. Besides, we intend to specify which skills are developed when we use this resource and the similarities and differences in relation to moments and situations that happen in classroom or in distance learning. During the research we joined some educational chat sessions, nine of which were chosen to be analised. Some situations, related to pedagogical activities were observed, such as: of students participation during the chat session; teacher and students interaction (collaborative and cooperative) allowing a learning environment; four moments of interaction provided by chatting sessions: apprehension (message reading), selection (interpretation), comprehension (critical aspects about the information) and information processing (reflection). ▼ Objectivo: Este estudo pretendeu determinar os efeitos de três programas de treino de força explosiva com a mesma carga de trabalho (i.e., o mesmo impulso mecânico) sobre a velocidade e distância de lançamento com uma bola de 1 Kg, uma de 0,5 kg, uma outra de Futebol e ainda uma bola de Andebol. Métodos: A amostra foi constituída por 30 alunos do sexo masculino (idade 8,5 ± 0,5 anos, peso 33,3 ± 6,5 kg, altura 1,3 ± 0,07 m) divididos em três grupos homogeneamente indexados a um tipo de treino específico. Durante o período de treino um grupo realizou 3 séries de 11 repetições e 1 série de 10 repetições com bola de Futebol (GF: ~ 0.45 Kg), um segundo grupo realizou 4 séries de 11 lançamentos com uma bola de 0.5 Kg (GBM: 0.5 Kg) e um terceiro grupo realizou 3 séries de 13 repetições e 1 série de 12 repetições com uma bola de Andebol (GA ~ 0.35 Kg). Todos os programas de treino tiveram a mesma carga de trabalho (i.e., o mesmo impulso mecânico) previamente estabelecido num estudo piloto. Foram executados testes de lançamentos com bola de futebol, com bola de Andebol e com bolas medicinais de 0.5 e de 1kg, antes e depois de um período de 6 semanas de treino com 2 sessões semanais. Resultados: Todos os grupos obtiveram aumentos significativos de magnitude similar na velocidade de lançamento com as bolas do primeiro para o segundo momento de avaliação. Não foram encontradas diferenças significativas entre os grupos, o que nos indica que as três formas de treino proporcionaram idênticos aumentos na velocidade de lançamento. Todavia, fazendo uma comparação entre os três grupos de intervenção, pudemos verificar o GF teve um maior aumento percentual (16.6%). Relativamente ao lançamento da com a bola de 0.5 Kg, o GA foi o que mais se destacou (15.3%). No que concerne ao lançamento da bola de Futebol, constatou-se que o grupo da GBM foi o que teve maiores incrementos percentuais (14.1%). Quanto ao lançamento da bola de Andebol, embora não se tenha percebido diferenças significativas entre os grupos, o grupo da bola de Futebol foi o que obteve maiores incrementos percentuais (10.2%). Concluiu-se que todos os programas de treino aplicados foram eficazes para o aumento significativo da velocidade de lançamento ao longo de um curto período de tempo (6 semanas). El primer capítulo, que tiene carácter introductorio: contiene definiciones y resultados conocidos que serán utilizados en los capítulos sucesivos. Por tratarse de resultados ya conocidos, se introducen con referencias y sin demostraciones. En el capítulo 2 se trata la p-nilpotencia en grupos hiperfinitos, donde p es un primo. Los resultados presentados se encuentran publicados en el siguiente artículo: Ballester-Bolinches, A.; Camp-Mora, S.; Spagnuolo, F., "On p-nilpotency of hyperfinite groups". Monatshefte f¨ur Mathematik, 176, no. 4, 497–502, 2015. Un grupo se dice p-nilpotente si tiene un p-subgrupo de Hall normal. En el caso de grupos finitos, se tiene que un grupo es p-nilpotente si y solo si todo p-subgrupo de Sylow tiene un p-complemento normal. En este capítulo se estudian propiedades de los p-subgrupos de Sylow de un grupo que garanticen que el grupo es p-nilpotente si y solo si el normalizador de un p-subgrupo de Sylow es p-nilpotente. Por ejemplo, un resultado clásico de Burnside establece que un grupo finito con p-subgrupos de Sylow abelianos es p-nilpotente si y solo si el normalizador de un p-subgrupo de Sylow es p-nilpotente. Darbo teisės doktrinoje įtvirtinto bendrumo ir diferenciacijos principo reikšmė, taikymo ribos, atskirų darbuotojų kategorijos, kuriems nustatomos papildomos saugos ir sveikatos garantijos. Darbo įstatymuose tokiais asmenimis pripažįstami: jauni asmenys (asmenys iki 18 metų), nėščios, neseniai pagimdžiusios ar krūtimi maitinančios moterys, neįgalieji, kuriems papildomų garantijų suteikimą lemia fiziologinės ar/ir psichologinės savybės. Tokių garantijų taikymas tik šioms kategorijoms priskirtiniems asmenims nebus laikomas diskriminacija likusiųjų atžvilgiu. Darbe kompleksiškai nagrinėjama nacionaliniais ir tarptautiniais teisės aktais nustatytos saugos ir sveikatos garantijos, lyginama su bendrosiomis. SUMMARY „SEPARATE GROUPS OF WORKERS SAFETY AND HEALTH GUARANTEE“ The paper reveals the health and safety guarantee the essence of the concept. Labor law doctrine laid down the principle of unity and differentiation, value, limits on the use of individual categories of workers, which provides for additional safety and health guarantee. Labor laws of such persons are recognized: young people (persons under 18 years of age), pregnant, have recently given birth or are breast-feeding women, the disabled, which leads to additional guarantees for the physiological and / or psychological characteristics. The application of such guarantees only those categories would not ascribable to individuals deemed to be discrimination against the rest. The paper examines the complex national and international statutory health and safety guarantees, compared with the general. This thesis examines the emergence, evolution and role of grower groups in agricultural research and extension within Western Australia. It attributes the emergence of grower groups to part of a wider set of processes, including the economic restructuring of agriculture and policy shifts that have seen government agencies gradually retreat from the direct delivery of research and extension. It argues that the emergence of grower groups was in part the result of changing views about extension and in particular a move from a model that simply 'transferred' scientific innovations to farmers, to more participatory and inclusive approaches. Collectively, these factors led farmers to 'selforganise' into groups aimed at meeting their own particular research, development and extension needs. This study contends that, from a theoretical perspective, the formation of these grower groups is closely aligned with the notion of a 'community of practice'. To better understand the evolution and role of grower groups, a detailed analysis was undertaken of five case study groups. These were selected on the basis of their geographical coverage and sectoral interests. The study examined the factors leading to the formation of each group, the nature of memberships, types of activities undertaken, modes of learning and the social interactions between members and with external stakeholders.

The research found some significant differences in the ways that the groups operated and in terms of their effectiveness: this related to the size of the group, the geography of social interactions, dependence on volunteers and the availability of resourcing. It showed that social interaction and networks were critical to the success of grower groups, which is consistent with the theoretical perspectives on communities of practice. Moreover, external connections with agencies, universities and the private sector had a major bearing on the success of groups. The study also identified a range of challenges related to funding, human capital and sustaining levels of engagement. Overall, however, it was apparent that grower groups now fill an important niche in Western Australian agriculture and offer a highly innovative and adaptive means of providing relevant research and extension.

In a series of works, Jun-Muk Hwang and Ngaiming Mok have developed a geometric theory of uniruled projective manifolds, especially those of Picard Number 1, relying on the study of Varieties of Minimal Rational Tangents (VMRT) from both the algebro-geometric and the G-structure perspectives. Based on this theory, Ngaiming Mok and Jaehyun Hong studied the standard embedding between two Rational Homogeneous Spaces (RHS) associated to long simple roots which are of different dimensions. In this thesis, I consider admissible pairs of RHS (X0, X) of Picard number 1 and locally closed complex submanifolds S ⊂ X inheriting VMRT sub-structures modeled on X0 = G0/P0 ⊂ X = G/P de_ned by taking intersections of VMRT of X with tangent space of S. Moreover, if any such S modeled on (X0, X) is necessarily the image of a standard embedding i : X0 → X, (X0, X) is said to be rigid. In this thesis, it is proved that an admissible pair (X0, X) is rigid whenever X is associated to a long simple root and X0 is non-linear and de_ned by a marked Dynkin sub-diagram. In the case of the pair (S0, S) of compact Hermitian Symmetric Spaces (cHSS), all the admissible pairs (S0, S) are completely classified. Based on this classification, a sufficient condition for the pair (S0, S) to be non-rigid is established through explicitly constructing a submanifold S ⊂ S such that S can never be obtained from the image of any standard embedding i : S0 → S. Besides, the term special pair is coined for those (S0; S) sorted out through classification, and the algebraicity of submanifolds modeled on special pairs is confirmed by checking a modified form of the non-degeneracy condition defined by Hong and Mok is satisfied. However, the question as to whether these special pairs are rigid, as pointed out in this thesis, remains to be investigated. Finally, pairs of hyperquadrics (Q^n, Q^m) are studied separately. Since non-rigidity is trivial, in these cases it is interesting to establish a characterization of the standard embedding i : Q^n→Q^m under some stronger condition. In this thesis, the latter problem is solved in terms of the partial vanishing of second fundamental forms.
