▼ The gravity model proved to to be one of the most successful framework for analyzing international trade flows, being referred to as the “workhorse” in the international trade literature (Head and Mayer (2014)). Microfoundations to this model has been provided in Anderson (1979) and it has often been employed to estimate the effects of a variety of trade policies (see Cipollina and Salvatici (2010) for a meta-analysis on reciprocal trade agreements, Rose (2000) for the effects of currency unions). The two chapters of this dissertation, which are independent empirical pieces, both make use of gravity equations for the estimation of trade flows, although with different purposes. The first chapter focuses on the specification of the gravity equation. In the second chapter, instead, gravity equations are employed for assessing the relationship between trade and growth: in fact, their estimation represents the first step for the creation of an instrumental variable for export flows. In the first chapter, a solo-authored work titled Scale Economies in European Trade, I show that European data support the existence of economies of scale in trade flows. The impact of trade costs on trade flows, in fact, is assumed to be constant by almost all empirical studies employing the gravity framework. Anderson et al. (2016) are the first to depart from this assumption, allowing trade costs to vary as a function of trade volumes. Their model nests the more traditional one and hence can be used to test for the existence of these scale economies, which are shown to be in place for trade between US and Canada. For my analysis I construct a comprehensive dataset for European trade in manufacturing over a long time span (from 1980 to 2013), on which I employ the same methodology. My results show that scale economies in trade costs are indeed a strong empirical fact outside of the American continent, and this holds for all the 26 manufacturing sectors considered, with an estimated average of 0.64% decrease in trade costs given by a 10% increase in trade volume. The focus on Europe allows me to test whether the EU expansion affected these economies of scale. While this is not true on average, it seems to be the case for some industries: trade with a EU partner entails scale elasticities 50% lower than trade with a non-EU member for 11 sectors out of the 26 considered. I also investigate whether scale elasticities can be rationalized by the existence of informational asymmetries. Using detailed product-level data, I do not find evidence that the degree of product homogeneity can account for the observed cross-sectoral variation. The scale coefficients are instead linked to country-specific institutional variables, such as the level of corruption: exporting to the country whose level of corruption is the lowest in the sample entails half the scale elasticity than exporting to the most corrupted one. ▼ The status of small celestial bodies as time capsules from the early age of the solar system has made them targets of increasing numbers of scientific exploration missions, while their value as ubiquitous sources of precious metals and volatiles has drawn the attention of extraterrestrial mining interests. In-situ spacecraft operations have been and are likely to continue being conducted in the dynamically complex near-surface environment at these bodies. The near-surface gravity field presents a particular modeling challenge for small bodies, as the gravity field is generally irregular and not well-modeled by two-body dynamics or common analytical perturbation methods. Hence, mission design efforts typically take an efficiency penalty to achieve near-field accuracy, or an accuracy penalty in the name of rapid design. A number of gravity field modeling techniques have been developed and applied at small bodies. Their drawbacks vary from field degradation near the surface to divergence in large portions of the relevant spatial domain to long computation times ill-suited to rapid trajectory design. This work aims to blend the desirable characteristics of several conventional small body gravity modeling approaches while mitigating their drawbacks in order to generate fast, accurate, and globally valid gravity field representations. Resulting gravity models are constructed in a modified discrete-element framework and take advantage of the best-available gravity field information at each mission stage. First, discrete-element gravity models with a hybrid force evaluation are developed for use prior to the collection of in-situ observations. A flexible shape model packing algorithm generates a layered array of polydisperse, spherical discrete elements shaped by the primitive body morphology. The elements are assigned either point-mass or low-degree and -order spherical harmonics gravity signatures, the superposition of which yields a fast, global net gravitational force model. The hybrid models are dubbed Multi-Layer Mascon and Exterior Spherical Harmonics, or MultiMESH gravity models. A sequence of linear filters fits the modeled surface potential to that of a homogeneous polyhedron (generally considered the most accurate gravity field model absent in-situ observations). For optimal packing configurations, MultiMESH models are shown to provide order-of-magnitude computational speedups compared to homogeneous polyhedra of equivalent accuracy in an identical exterior region of validity. Efficiency gains are demonstrated for the small bodies 433 Eros, 216 Kleopatra, 25143 Itokawa, and Comet 67P/Churyumov-Gerasimenko. Once in-situ observations are available, information about the primitive body gravity field is typically expressed in the form of a spherical harmonic expansion. The second major contribution of this work is the development of fast mascon proxy models for low-altitude gravity representations that are statistically consistent with reference spherical harmonic gravity fields. ▼ This paper presents evaluation of the 2008 Earth Gravitational Model (EGM08) that was recently released by the US National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency, using GPS and leveled orthometric heights. This thesis has validated the accuracy of the EGM08 gravity model on some selected sites in Addis Ababa and western part of Ethiopia. The data used for evaluation are GPS and leveling data. Both GPS and leveling data used for the evaluation include primary and secondary data. The secondary data is for selected sites in western part of Ethiopia where as the primary data is for sites in Addis Ababa. The leveled heights of GPS/leveling benchmarks are determined to first and second order accuracy of leveling (4mm ∗ √, d in km). They are tied to first order Blue Nile Geodetic network benchmarks carried out from 1957 to 1961 G.C. The Blue Nile Geodetic network benchmarks are tied to the mean sea level tide gauge at port of Alexandria, Egypt. The GPS data collected are processed by GAMIT/GLOBK software based on ITRF08 reference frame with 2mm-3mm accuracy for horizontal coordinates and ≤ 10 for the vertical coordinates. The paper is focused on analysis of values of geoid derived from GPS/leveling Nlev and geoid from spherical harmonic coefficients NEGM08 derived from the 2008 earth gravity model. The geoid from GPS and leveling is and geoid from the spherical Harmonic coefficients is NEGM08 The validation process is the comparison of the EGM08 derived geoid with the geoid from Leveling. The comparison is the computation of standard deviation of residuals/mismatches of selected benchmarks; that the standard deviation is less than 3.9ccm (Bedada, 2010). The hypothesis is to get the mismatch between geoids from level with both EGM08 derived geoids is small. As it is expected that the two derived geoids have very small variations, it is shown the geoid from EGM08 can fits to the geoid from level. This approves that orthometric height derived from EGM08 (orthometric height from spherical harmonic coefficients) can replace orthometric from level. ▼ Relying upon two common trends in modern castle studies, this exploratory study works to combine the landscape context and the spatial interaction of the main building to create an assessment of the spatial and social interaction between the main residential structure of a noble’s estate and the landscape features attached to surrounding property features. To explore questions about this kind of interaction this project has taken the sheriffdom of Angus, Scotland, between the year 1450 and 1542, to examine non-royal residences in an area that offered a diverse topography. This project aims to gain a better understanding of the surroundings of late fifteenth and early sixteenth century noble residences in Angus while contributing to the growing discussion of castles and their landscapes, and testing methods for addressing the spatial and social interaction between the main structure and the landscape features. Section A discusses the three source types used for compiling the dataset for this project within the context of three key categories needed to create a GIS dataset: location, object, and attributes. From the landscape features the mills and fishings were the most commonly mentioned and further details regarding the contents of the lordly landscapes were rare. Section B explores three methods of examining the relationships between the main residence and the landscape features: a modified RA and RRA values assessment, which measured levels of segregation within the noble residence site as a whole; a version of the gravity model, which helped identify the draw for interaction within the arrangement of the noble’s landscape; and network analysis questions, which facilitated a clear assessment of any connections between the use of structural terms and landscape features mentioned over both temporal and social contexts. This exploration of spatial and social interaction opens up a discussion about Scottish noble landscape creation and new methods for studying the relationship between the main structure and the wider complex of a noble residence.

▼ This study tries to explore the trade relations between Ethiopia and East African community countries in general and specifically the Trade Integration for cooperation with the East African Community Partner countries. The study has a main objective of investigating the main determinants of Ethiopia’s bilateral Trade and addresses the question of whether Ethiopia has untapped Bilateral Trade and export potentials with the East African community countries or not. It also Analyze existing Trade agreements and protocols and also explores the unexploited export potentials that the country that may have in the East Africa community countries using the an econometric analysis of augmented gravity model estimation by Generalized Least Square (GLS) estimation technique over the 9 years panel data (2004-2012) of the four bilateral Trade partners. The estimated coefficients then used to analyze the existing bilateral Trade and predict the potential that the country could have in the EAC countries. The paper identifies the significant factors of influence on bilateral trade flows, exports and imports by employing Gravity variables and some supplementary dummy variables to determine the estimated equations of the gravity model. Accordingly, GDP, per capita GDP difference, Nominal Exchange Rate, Inflation and Distance between the Trading Countries from Ethiopia found to have the assigned magnitude and significant impact on Ethiopia’s bilateral Trade. The export potentials of the country are estimated using the estimated coefficients of the gravity model. Accordingly, Ethiopia has the highest unexploited potential in EAC and significant amount in the determining variables by the size of the bilateral economic, Nominal Exchange Rate, Trade Policy of the country and Distance between the Trading Countries and Ethiopia. Empirical studies on Regional Economic Integration process in Africa exhibit sluggish progress and there by limited level of bilateral trade. So the paper explores regional trade integration of the countries involved in Ethiopia and the EAC countries may support bilateral Trade Growth of the state Economies. ▼ Few things facing the U.S. meat industry in recent years have garnered more attention of economic researchers than food safety events, policies, and mitigation efforts. This dissertation has two main essays and themes focusing on both domestic and international food safety issues. Contributing new insights to this situation, the impacts of FSIS (Food Safety Inspection Service) recalls on consumer meat demand in the United States are estimated by a series of Rotterdam models in the first study using monthly grocery-scanner data. Multiple model specifications are employed to further assess effects across meat products and geographic regions. Recall variables are constructed separately as beef E. coli recall, beef non-E. coli recall, pork recall, and poultry recall variables to facilitate finer assessment of demand impacts. Results suggest beef E. coli recalls significantly reduce the demand for ground beef contemporaneously among most, but not all, regions in the United States. The ultimate finding of food safety effects neither being fully homogeneous nor entirely heterogeneous warrants appreciation. In order to protect domestic consumers and meat industries from potential food safety hazards, some member countries of the WTO implement sanitary and phytosanitary (SPS) measures as non-tariff barriers. The second study focuses on investigating the determinants of red meat trade patterns and associated impacts of SPS regulations. This analysis uses multiple product-level gravity equation models and PPML (Poisson Pesudo Maximum-likelihood estimators to overcome sample selection bias and heteroscedasticity and examine the trade relationship among other factors. Results indicate that, trade values of frozen beef and pork are significantly reduced by the implementation of SPS measures. Also, the spillover effects across meat products on trade were detected which provides essential information to the meat industry, policy makers, and trade representatives. ▼ The first part of this study investigates gravity wave parameterization in the middle atmosphere, focusing on internal waves with a broad spectrum of phase speeds. A column model based on CIRA wind and temperature profiles is employed to assess the characteristics of the Hines Doppler-Spread (1997) and Warner-McIntyre-Scinocca (2001) nonorographic drag parameterizations for internal gravity waves. The Alexander-Dunkerton (1999) variant of Warner-McIntyre-Scinocca scheme is also briefly considered. This study goes into more detail than previous comparisons by performing a spectral analysis of the momentum deposition and drag, and by examining the ability of each scheme to reproduce saturation. Comparisons with pure critical level filtering are also made, and it is found that Hines DSP mainly constitutes an enhancement to critical level absorption, while the Warner-McIntyre-Scinocca scheme produces substantially different wave drag profiles. We find several undesirable characteristics in the drag produced by the Hines scheme. For typical midlatitude profiles, it produces an abrupt onset of large accelerations that are confined to a relatively narrow layer. It is also unable to reproduce wave spectra consistent with observed saturation at high vertical wavenumbers. The second part of this study investigates the generation mechanisms of the gravity waves over Newfoundland and Labrador (NL). We performed a series of simulations for a selection of the strongest peak events using WRF model to further investigate the characteristics and generation mechanisms of gravity wave peak events over NL. We studied three different peak events, 2003, 2008 and 2014. We showed that gravity wave events in the winter hotspot region over NL can have both topographic and jet streak sources. In the cases we examined, one source of waves was the Torngat range on the northern coast of Labrador. However, the other two wave sources were in fact outside the hotspot region, and a combination of advection and propagation caused those packets to enter the hotspot in the middle atmosphere. We have demonstrated that topographic wave packets, which are normally assumed to remain stationary over the source, can in fact be advected far downstream from the source. ▼ The volume of international trade flows has likely significantly increased, and to address the determinants of international trade is one of major concerns amongst trade economists. This is also the case for Vietnam, a nation which has been in transition, as it integrated into the global economy through trade whilst moving from a command to a market economy in the last three decades, and has experienced a significant increase in international trade activities. Trade and world economic integration are seen as the impetus for accelerating the well-beings of the domestic Vietnamese communities and international community in the region. However, an understanding of the link between trade and economic integration from the perspective of Vietnam is missing. Empirical studies on Vietnamese trade are in lack to address these determinants (see, Le, 1996; Nguyen, 2010). This thesis identifies the key factors that have driven the impressive growth of Vietnamese exports during the world economic integration process (1986-2010). Importantly, this study applies the gravity equation to investigate these factors by the two aspects, namely, the aggregate and sectoral exports analysis. The gravity equation has been frequently applied in empirical studies to examine bilateral trade flows. I make use of this equation in addressing the key determinants of Vietnamese export flows. The applied models for Vietnamese exports are based on Frankle (1993). This study focuses on a large sample of 54 main trading partners of Vietnam over a 25 year period. This large sample is divided into different country groups with two categories: income and regional basis, which provides important insights on how the trade policy should look like by different trading partners. For sectoral analysis, 24 key exporting sectors are selected. The aggregate bilateral gravity models introduce useful information to explain the determinants of bilateral exports of Vietnam. Generally, such factors as economies of scale, economic development, exchange rate, domestic openness, trade costs, and regional trade agreements (the memberships of ASEAN and APEC) are found to significantly contribute to the performance of total bilateral exports. However, the results suggest that openness of trading partners has not been always beneficial for total exports of Vietnam. Similarly, the WTO membership tends to divert Vietnam’s bilateral exports to non-member trading partners for most country panels. Additionally, a comparison of Vietnam and Singapore (an Asian country that is economically better positioned than Vietnam) is carried out using the same models. I found that both results are rather consistent. The outcomes of sectoral estimations address the key determinants by accounting for the bilateral exports for a large number of key export sectors. Air-gravity conveyors are widely used in industry to convey bulk materials with the advantages of low particle velocities, low levels of particle attrition, potentially high conveying rates and low power consumption. Most current designs are based on empirical design charts and past experience as there have been relatively few investigations attempting to model the flow of air-gravity conveyor systems. Instead of empirically based methods, this thesis adopted a new continuum approach based on fluid rheology to assess the flow performance of fine powders within air-gravity conveyors. Meanwhile, this thesis also conducted computational fluid dynamic (CFD) numerical simulations of an air-gravity conveying system with fluidised materials. Therefore, the objective of this research focused on the following specific aspects: design of the air-gravity conveyor; experimental determinations of the flow behaviour of aerated materials; theoretical modelling of the fluidised flow conveying models based on the rheology; validation of the proposed conveying models; and CFD simulation of the air-gravity fluidised conveying system. Initially, experimental investigations on the basic parameters including density parameters, particle size distribution and air-particle parameters were conducted on sand and flyash. Essentially, a combination of a fluidisation chamber and a rotary viscometer was applied for testing the shear stress and shear rate of fluidised materials, and then the rheology parameters could be determined accordingly. Secondly, the air-gravity conveyor was designed to form a circulation system for future experimental research. Detailed drawings are presented in this thesis. Essentially, the conveying system consists of four sections: hopper feed section, material conveying section, material receive section and material return section. Instrumentation for measuring pressure and mass flow rates was designed and installed in an experimental area. Thirdly, air-gravity conveying tests were conducted on sand and flyash. The material bed height, material mass flow rate and pressure drop were measured and analysed under vent and non-vent condition. Based on the experimental test procedure and test programme, the effect of air flow rate and channel inclination on the depth of flowing beds, material mass flow rate and pressure drop along the channel were investigated and discussed. Fourthly, a fundamental conveying model for air-gravity conveyor flows in inclined channels, with an emphasis on the conservation of momentum taking into account the rheology of the gas-solid mixture, was developed to predict the flow behaviour of material in air-gravity conveyors. By inputting the rheological parameters and conveying design data, the steady flow bed height of this air-gravity conveying system could be predicted. ▼ The main objective of this thesis is to ascertain the determinants of trade among nations within a framework of recent and theoretically motivated trade models. It specifically focuses on trade costs facing exports from a country. Moreover, the study utilises recent cross-sectional data for the year 2007. This study integrates a somewhat scattered literature spanning more thanthree decades (from 1979 onwards) to derive the so called gravity model of trade. It then presents a comprehensive empirical analysis of internatonal trade using various formulations of the gravity equation. Trade facilitation in recent years has become a subject of debate at various bilateral and multilateral forums. It is therefore not surprising that empirical research on the issue of trade facilitation has experienced resurgence. This study presents a comprehensive quantitative assessment of trade costs using recent trade models and their extensions. The study estimates the benchmark gravity specification that appeared in Anderson and Wincoop (2003) using country fixed effects andyear 2007 data, in a global setting of 170 countries. Noticeably, our results indicate that both bilateral distance and tariffs still have a significant negative influence on exports. Moreover, better trade-related infrastructure and border governance promotes trade. This study also uses advanced econometric techniques by using Poisson and modified Poisson models such as negative binomial (NB), zero-inflated Poisson (ZIP), zeroinflated negative binomial (ZINB) models. These models were recently suggested for trade gravity estimation in Silva and Tenreyro (2006) and Burger et al (2009) and lend further credibility to our results. Assuming heterogeneity (in productivity) of exporting firms as suggested in Melitz (2003) and Helpman et al (2008), our results indicate that the extensive margin ( that is the number or proportion of exporting firms) is a significant determinant of aggregate exports for the year 2007. The somewhat forced use of country fixed effects precludes including countryspecific variables into the analysis. This study utilises an extension of the gravity model presented in Baier and Bergstrand (2009) that uses a first order Taylor-series expansion to approximate for theoretically motivated multilateral resistances. This approximation approach notonly allows us to include policy relevant country-specific variables in analysis, but also facilitates counter-factual simulations. Our results indicate that both exporting and importing country’s quality of infrastructure and governance is a significant determinant of exports. Moreover, lack of access of a country to the sea has a negative influence on trade. Interestingly, our results indicate that when an exporting or importing country is landlocked, it has a dampening impact on exports and more so if it is the importing country that is landlocked. Il mio lavoro analizza empiricamente la relazione fra IDE (stock e flussi in uscita) ed esportazioni per 75 paesi fra il 2001 e il 2012. Nel primo capitolo vengono esaminate la letteratura economica sulle determinanti degli IDE e la questione della complementarità o sostituibilità fra IDE e commercio internazionale; nel secondo capitolo vengono descritti alcuni elementi di Analisi Reticolare (AR) e, infine, il terzo e quarto capitolo, analizzano empiricamente l’evoluzione delle strutture di IDE e delle esportazioni e le loro determinanti. I risultati confermano che (1) solo una piccola parte degli IDE e delle esportazioni possibili è in atto. Questa circostanza rende il fenomeno della globalizzazione poco realistico, facendo emergere alcuni attori centrali (i.e. US, China; Germany); (2) tradizionali fattori gravitazionali, come il PIL e la distanza, determinano significativamente gli IDE; la lingua comune è anche significativamente correlata agli IDE; i coefficienti delle altre variabili sono meno stabili; (3) le esportazioni e gli IDE sono strutturalmente simili e livelli precedenti di esportazioni sono negativamente correlati con gli IDE. I risultati suggeriscono sostituibilità fra le esportazioni e gli IDE confermando la contraddittorietà della questione.

My thesis deals with the empirical analysis of the relationship between FDI (outflows and outstocks) and exports for 75 countries between 2001 and 2012. In the first chapter I review the economic literature on FDI determinants, hence I detail the complementarity/substitutability between FDI and trade; in the second chapter I describe some Social Network Analysis tools and finally in the third and fourth chapters I investigate empirically the evolution of the structures of FDI and exports and their determinants. Results show that (1) a large part of world FDI and exports is excluding all “potential” FDI flows and a small quota of all possible links has taken place, making the globalisation phenomenon far away to be realistic with few central players (i.e. US, China, Germany); (2) traditional gravity factors, such as GDP and distance, significantly determine FDI; common language is also significantly related to FDI; the coefficients for the other variables are less stable; (3) exports and FDI are similarly structured and previous levels of exports negatively affect FDI, suggesting the substitutability between FDI and exports and the puzzling issue of FDI and trade relationship.
