▼ Traditional higher education environments have changed very little in the last hundred and fifty years, while technology has advanced in nearly every other area of society making each more productive and more capable. This study identifies key aspects of a comprehensive and universal visual learning system that incorporates a more holistic approach to design and interactivity in educational environments. The desired effect of this is elevating classroom learning to higher levels as defined by Bloom’s Taxonomy. In this thesis, I have collected and explored empirical and observational data to examine the relationship between effective learning environments and the use of visual aids and interactive experiences. Research in the forms of case studies and personae will present how effective educators are utilizing technology and visuals in and out of the classroom and how individuals associate information through relationships of color, shape, form, hierarchy and other visuals. This research has been applied to a brand identity system designed to facilitate deeper learning and specifically applied to the hypothetical department of Creative Arts at West Coast Baptist College. Visual support of a presentation must include powerful storytelling, the establishment of an emotional connection between speaker and audience, a rigorous and thorough preparation, and content mastery on the part of the presenter. Online learning-based video content should take advantage of bilateral cognitive processing of both visuals and audio, should be limited in length to capitalize on the ideal attention span of the viewer, and should be bundled with interactive, actionable content or questions for the best long-term retention rates. The aim of the research was to establish a set of guidelines for the evolution of education in the adoption of modern visual and interactive design systems to better engage a new generation of learners. The research has been applied to create a flexible, comprehensive, and universal design system that can be packaged for implementation in the classroom environment in nearly any teaching field.

▼ Design ingenuity and sustainability can, and should, work together. Designers have an ethical responsibility to provide ideas that do no harm, and better yet, create positive solutions that nourish the environment, social and cultural structures, and the economy. This approach, referred to as sustainable systems thinking – in contrast to more common design approaches – looks at a problem as an integrated component of an entire network. Sustainable systems thinking helps designers, clients, and consumers to consider who or what is connected to the design outcome, where the project will have positive and negative ecological, financial, cultural or social impacts, and make the entire supply chain visible. This process requires a more holistic and deeply collaborative method that still emphasizes creativity and innovation like traditional design processes. This also calls for a redefined craft that explores new materials and processes to confront issues of sustainability and to better understand the interconnectedness of all parts of a system. While some individual designers are taking the lead, unfortunately, sustainable systems thinking is rarely taught in communication design education. To become a guiding principle rather than an exception, the process of thinking in sustainable systems must be integrated into the fundamental curriculum in communication design education. This argument is the basis of my research agenda. The results of a survey I conducted indicate that sustainable systems thinking education is rarely taught in undergraduate design courses. This survey also shows the desire from students to learn about this topic in communication design programs. Through personal interviews, design educators shared their perspective on integrating sustainable systems thinking in curricula. Incorporating systems thinking into the core undergraduate education will allow students to begin thinking, at a visceral level, about problems as components of larger systems and connected concerns. As a result, it is my goal that the designers of tomorrow will have the power and knowledge to design responsibly for more social equality, cultural preservation, environmental viability and economic stability. ▼ As digital technology promises immediacy and interactivity in communication, sight and sound in motion graphics has expanded the range of design possibilities in advertising, social networking, and telecommunication beyond the visual realm. The experience of seeing has been greatly enriched by sound as visual solutions become dynamic and multi-dimensional. The ability to record and transfer sight and sound with new media has granted the designer more control in manipulating a viewer's experience of time and space. This control allows time-based form to become the foundation that establishes many interactive, multisensory and interdisciplinary applications. Is conventional design theory for print media adequate to effectively approach time-based form? If not, what is the core element that is required to balance the static and dynamic aspects of time in new media? Should time-related theories and methodologies from other disciplines be adopted into our design principles? If so, how would this knowledge be integrated? How can this experience in time be effectively transferred to paper? Unless the role of the time dimension in sight is operationally deconstructed and retained with sound, it is very challenging to control the design in this fugitive form. Time activation refers to how time and the perception of time can be manipulated for design and communication purposes. Sound, as a shortcut to the active time design element, not only encapsulates the structure of its "invisible" time-based form, but also makes changes in time conspicuously measurable and comparable. Two experiments reflect the influence of sound on imagery, a slideshow and video, as well as how the dynamics in time are represented across all design media. A cyclical time-based model is established to reconnect the conventional design principles learned in print media with time-based media. This knowledge helps expand static images to motion and encapsulate motion in stasis. The findings provide creative methods for approaching visualization, interactivity, and design education.

Com a crescente oferta de cursos superiores de design no Brasil, considerou-se que parte dos egressos destes cursos não seguem atuando nesta área. Notou-se que, com o advento de publicações sobre o tema do design thinking e sobre o ensino de elementos do design na educação geral, há valorização dos atributos da formação do designer para resolver problemas em outras áreas. O objetivo desta pesquisa foi verificar a possibilidade de aspectos da formação em design permearem a atuação de ex-alunos deste curso no desempenho de outras atividades profissionais. Metodologia de projeto, antecipação construtiva, capacidade criativa, uso de linguagem visual, pensamento abstrato, análise crítica, noções de gestalt e de semiótica, entre outros elementos, fazem parte da formação do designer e interferem em sua forma de pensar e de resolver problemas. Esta pesquisa se baseou em métodos qualitativos de investigação, empregando, sobretudo, entrevistas semiestruturadas em profundidade com diversas categorias de respondentes afetas à temática.

With the growing offer of higher education courses in design in Brazil, some that graduate from these courses end up not working in this area. The advent of publications on the subject of design thinking and on the teaching of design elements in general education, the attributes of designer\'s academic background for solving problems in other areas are being valued. The object of this research was to check for the possibility that aspects of their background in design might permeate the actions of former students of this course when carrying out other professional activities. Project methodology, constructive anticipation, creative capacity, the use of visual language, abstract thinking, critical analysis, notions of Gestalt and semiotics and other elements form part of the designer\'s education and interfere in his/her way of thinking and solving problems. This research is based on qualitative methods of investigation and uses, in particular, semi-structured and in-depth interviews with many different categories of respondents who are devoted to this subject.

Comparé à l’art contemporain chinois qui ne cesse de caracoler en tête du marché de l’art, le design graphique est un objet artistique, industriel et populaire, modeste dans ses ambitions culturelles. Toutefois ses enjeux présentent un important intérêt scientifique dès lors que toutes les productions spécifiques du design s’adressent davantage au peuple chinois qu’aux étrangers. Soumis à des commanditaires économiques et politiques, le design graphique en tant qu’objet de recherche témoigne non seulement des luttes existant à l’intérieur du champ du design chinois mais également de celles qui se livrent en pleine Chine postmoderne. Dans le cadre théorique des Etudes Culturelles, cette thèse considère que le design graphique recèle une fonction sociale et politique significative en Chine, dont les enjeux excèdent ceux que l’on pense être susceptibles de répondre à une simple fonction de communication commerciale. A partir d’analyse de quelques productions graphiques emblématiques historiques, cette recherche s’interroge sur la réactualisation de l’identité culturelle chinoise, en crise aujourd’hui. Au cours des périodes moderne, maoïste et postmoderne, le design graphique n’a cessé de participer à l’esprit du temps dominant. En tant que dispositif actif, socio-formant l’esprit et relevant de la culture, le design graphique intervient dans les processus de construction identitaire individuelle et collective. Cette recherche, après avoir rendu compte des rapports parfois ambigus ou incertains, exercés par les modèles graphiques hégémoniques et concurrentiels, s’attache à décrypter les actuelles tensions révélatrices de valeurs et visions du monde contradictoires.

Comparing to the Chinese contemporary art which constantly prance at the head of the art market, the graphic design is an artistic object, industrial and popular, and modest in its cultural ambitions. However, its stakes present a scientific interest important because all of the specific design productions direct to the Chinese people than the foreigners. Subject to the economic and political partners, the graphic design, as the object of research, attest the existing conflicts not only inside the field of Chinese design, but also engaged in the full postmodern China. In the theoretical frame of the Cultural Studies, this thesis considers that the graphic design receives a significant social and political function in China, those stakes exceed its simple function of commercial communication which we are likely to think. From analysis of some historic and symbolic graphic productions, this research examines the updating of the Chinese cultural identity, in crisis today. In modern times, Maoist and postmodern periods, the graphic design has continued to participate in the dominant spirit of the times. ▼ Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics fields have incredible impacts on society and the planet. One example of such a field is synthetic biology—a modern biotechnology that involves the, often genetic, manipulation of cells or cellular outputs for practical purposes. This field influences agriculture, medicine, and manufacturing—to name a few. Concomitant with these advancements is the rise of professional communities and university level academic areas of study around synthetic biology. These activities—until recently—have been limited to commercial groups and experts due to the material and intellectual resources needed for field engagement. The emergence of lower cost portable lab tools, local community lab spaces, and interactive public exhibits has made synthetic biology accessible to field novices of all ages. Despite, there is little research that examines the affordances synthetic biology may provide K-12 learners. In fact, much of existing research related to K-12 learners often includes applications that have advanced considerably or that do not include synthetic biology. Moreover, much of existing research reports on high school students, while far less examines middle school students who have previously been shown to have well-formed perspectives about biotechnologies. The research presented in this thesis attends to this gap in the literature by addressing three overarching research questions, including: (1) what do middle school students know and think about synthetic biology and its various applications, (2) how do middle school students carry out synthetic biology as an active learning activity, and (3) how do synthetic biology-related contexts clues support student justifications about their perspectives? Mixed-methods are used to examine surveys, semi-structured interviews, video observation data, and student productions. Results suggest that while middle school students know very little about synthetic biology and its various applications, their well-formed opinions about the field include considerations of application utility, risks, benefits and safety. Findings also suggest that synthetic biology provides opportunities for learners to engage in personally relevant production and—when situated in detailed contexts—supports advanced justification practices. Priorities for future research and innovations in synthetic biology and science education are discussed.

▼ Visual Communication Design (VCD) is a reciprocal interchange between audience, information, designer, client, and creativity. Traditionally, VCD education focuses primarily on technical mastery over various media, therefore minimal time is spent on in-depth learning of contextual and cultural understandings of design. In support of the evolving role of VCD today and the unprecedented connection of a multicultural design community, it is important to recognize the intersection between intrinsic cultural design elements and formal fundamental design studies. This thesis proposes to highlight cultural identity awareness by empowering knowledge of design authenticity and originality through basic design pedagogy. To do so, this proposal describes the conceptual development of printed interactive tools that support interdisciplinary learning methodologies of the formal elements of art and principles of design via unique international indigenous design. The final piece will serve as a template for a collection of books that will each cite particular visual values of individual cultures. This thesis serves as a foundational specimen for investigating content of recognized details from Wixáritari or Huichol (Mexico), Sami (Norway, Sweden, Finland, Russia), and Ainu (Japan) indigenous artisan designs. The initial concept for the tools was developed from observations of current VCD education, cultural identity and design inclusion, as well as established teaching theories that guide current pedagogical methods. The objective of the work is to encourage supplementary understanding of cultural identity within formal VCD education. Understanding the proper use of any craft involves an all-around understanding of context of the user and audience by the communicator. The analysis and reflections considered through this thesis lead to the issue not solely of VCD, but of how to learn and teach VCD. Students and instructors need learning tools that engage them in multicultural conversations within design. By providing tools that organize important relevant theories and recognizing this content, the VCD discipline can have conscientious sources of information to begin with and build upon. Furthermore, creating more well-rounded and knowledgeable interdisciplinary interests and empathy. This study acknowledges that design education and research should be progressively geared towards addressing multicultural audiences with critical solutions that consider both the audience’s and their own cultural orientation. ▼ The purpose of this study was to examine creativity assessment and antecedents and the role of creativity training. The specific research objectives included 1) investigate relationships among different types of creativity assessments; 2) examine creativity before and after training to determine how it is influenced by past creative experience and attitude toward risk-taking; 3) evaluate effectiveness of a creativity training program based on participants' evaluations, change in participant creativity, different samples, and individual participants' performance. Two studies, in 2012 and 2013, were conducted to collect data. The research participants were enrolled in AESHM 222 Creative Thinking and Problem Solving course in the College of Human Sciences at Iowa State University. In the 2012 sample, a total of 47 students participated. The paired data (collected at the beginning and at the end of the course) sample size was 40. In the 2013 sample, a total of 66 students participated in the study. The paired data sample size was 46. Based on three theories – investment theory (Sternberg & Lubart, 1996), Vygotsky's cultural-historical theory (Kaufman & Beghetto, 2009), and growth mindset theory (Dweck, 2006) – a theoretical framework for the study was developed and hypotheses were proposed. The following creativity constructs were selected and tested: (a) divergent thinking measured by the Torrance Test of Creative Thinking, (b) self-assessment of creative ability, and (c) expert assessment of creative product. Preliminary analysis included descriptive analysis, factor analysis, reliability test, and correlation analysis. Structural equation modeling, general linear model of repeated measures, simple regression, and t-test were used to test the proposed model and hypotheses. The research findings indicate that the three assessments examined in the study measured different creativity attributes. Participants' ability to generate multiple and different ideas over a short period of time was not related to their self-perceived ability to generate multiple and original ideas, or expert evaluated creative products. This implies that even though people may believe in their own creative abilities, it does not mean they can produce original ideas and translate them into creative products. Past creative experience did not contribute to creativity directly. The research results demonstrated that even though certain experiences are typically referred to as "creative" (e.g., painting, drawing, playing musical instrument, knitting, etc.), participants engaged in these activities were not necessarily producing creative products. The importance placed on past "creative" activities in relation to the ability of generating novel ideas might be overestimated in the previous research. Risk-taking directly positively influenced self-assessment of creativity. ▼ Business Week recently launched an innovation and design quarterly entitled In, as well as a Website section specifically dedicated to design and innovation. Fast Company, with its Third Annual Masters of Design issue, and Fortune have also added significant design content to their publications. The business world appears to have discovered design as a vital strategic tool and economic force. Globalization and the Internet knowledge explosion have changed our world in unprecedented ways. Design thinking, which was previously relegated to dealing with issues such as form and function, has become the twenty-first century methodology for the development of new business models. Unfortunately, the hierarchical nature of higher education has prevented design and business curriculums from keeping pace, though the Illinois Institute of Technology (IIT) has recently added a dual degree, the MDes/MBA. I have two main goals with this thesis. First, I intend to propose a new design curriculum that will educate design students as to the inner workings of the business world in order to position them as strategic partners with a seat at the board room table, rather than as vendors at the end of the line. It will teach them to be strategic content creators and authors rather than passive choosers of fonts and colors. I have accomplished this by immersing students in business research, professional practice, and the development of a precollege program. Students were also involved in the development of new materials (questionnaire, white papers, etc.) specifically created for the business audience. Secondly, many business types equate the creative process with drawing and art (a “soft” discipline), when we know it is problem solving at its most fundamental level. In order to “inject art into commerce and elevate it from a business service to a cultural force,” as designer Tibor Kalman suggested, it is necessary to demystify the process and put design in terms the scientist and business person can understand. Thus, the question, “Can one objectify the creative process in a left-brained, planned and organized way?” “Designers make maps for places that don’t yet exist,” said Rowena Reed Kostellow, educator. Since those in the business world see things in black and white —on a spread sheet, graph or chart the bottom line so to speak—I have developed new materials that recontextualize design principles, process and practice for those in the business world.

Denna rapport beskriver skapandeprocessen av webbsidan aiducate.se, vars syfte är att stötta, motivera och vägleda gymnasieelever i sin utbildning. Projektet genomfördes självständigt utan någon uppdragsgivare och pågick under en tidsperiod om tio veckor. Till grund låg en förundersökning som visade på bristande motivation hos gymnasieelever. I en kompletterande enkätundersökning fastställdes det att eleverna önskade en modernisering av utbildningen med utrymme för nutida undervisningsmetoder. Som ett komplement till gymnasieutbildningen framställdes därför innovationen Aiducate som i framtiden ska omfatta olika verktyg för studierna. Allt från hur man skriver en rapport till hur man får inspiration. Inom ramen för detta examensarbete presenterades en enklare betaversion av webbsidan. Detta omfattade en fullständig grafisk profil, responsiv design och vissa funktioner såsom exempelvis forum och användarkonto. Rapporten följer även utvecklingen av webbsidan i det populära CMS-verktyget WordPress. Teoretisk bakgrund har förankrat alla slutgiltiga beslut för webbsidans design och funktion, vilket även återkopplats genom användartester.

This report describes the creative process of the website aiducate.se, which purpose is to support, motivate and guide high school students in their education. The project was conducted independently without any employers and lasted for a period of ten weeks. The basis of the project was a prior study that showed a lack of motivation among high school students. A supplementary survey showed that the students wanted to modernize the education with contemporary teaching methods. As a complement to high school education, the innovation Aiducate was made which in the future will include various tools for the studies. Everything from how to write a report to how to get inspiration. Within the framework of this thesis a simpler beta version of the website was presented. This included a complete graphic profile, responsive design and some features such as a forum and user account. The report also follows the development of the website in the popular CMS tool WordPress. Theoretical background has anchored all final decisions for the website’s design and function, which also reconnects through user testing.
