▼ This paper has the purpose of verifying the effect of the ICMS deferment in the State of S??
o Paulo printing industries - a kind of back tax substitution. The theoretical reference discusses the tax substitution and the tax on transactions relating to the goods circulation. The quantitative research covered the printing industries that manufacture paper and card paper packing, medicine bulls, labels and tags, since they are fitted into this kind of tax substitution. It was used the factor analysis and, after rotated, were found the factors: satisfaction, benefits, the government actuation and the facilities. The search results show that these entrepreneurs are not satisfied with the ICMS deferment, because it does not present benefits, since the government does not fulfill its role in the approval of credits, resulting in difficulties to repass the ICMS accumulated credits for the payment of the suppliers by the purchasing of raw materials. This research identified that, if the manufacturers might revindicate the deferment revocation, they would ask it or even change for a state not covered by this kind of back tax substitution that corresponds to the deferment. It was highlighted in research that contributed to deferral not lowering the price, reduce capital and the third increase in not competitiveness.

▼ The study investigates present-day public events and ceremonies in Cardiff, and how they reflect, illustrate or employ traditional forms of communal activity. It employs the theoretical and empirical approaches of folkloristics, which deals with the identification, documentation and analysis of traditional material and expressive forms. Unusually, the study considers activities of popular origin and habitual practices of institutional origin on the same basis. It is framed largely by practice theory both generally and as applied within folkloristics, but with appropriate recognition given to the significance of performance theory.
The topic is addressed through the observation of a range of activities and their associated forms of public engagement. The study was limited to activities taking place outdoors in daylight within the city centre and Cardiff Bay, with most fieldwork between 2010 and 2013. Three themes are addressed: socialising, protesting and remembering. A few activities are largely unorganised, but the majority are organised by public authorities and/or commercial bodies or by members of the public acting together. Many events have been launched in the past decade, and have become established within a recognisable cultural calendar, albeit the concept of a present-day ‘ritual year’ cannot be justified.
As the capital city of Wales, certain institutional activities associated with the state, i.e. United Kingdom, are enacted. In contrast, there are few formal celebrations of Cardiff or Wales as such. Informal expressions tend to illustrate the cultural norms of the mainly English-speaking south-east, but the increasing presence of Welsh-speakers is becoming more noticeable, although there are few regular events centred on the language.

▼ Nowadays, technology has a direct influence on the relationship student and
teacher have with language. The internet is a powerful tool in helping work with the
language and, through it, the knowledge comes to the student easily and intensely.
Furthermore, this facility has enhanced and made visible what has been called,
within the University community, "plagiarism generation." This work assumes that
this generation has, in their written texts, symbolic movements similar to those of
"copy and paste" applied to research work carried out by high school students.
Taking this as starting point, this dissertation aims to analyze how high school
students of the 1st year from a school in Natal (RN) construct texts, under the
movements known as "Ctrl + c" and "Ctrl + v", with reference to the text of the
"other". More specific issues are behind the general objective, namely: 1. how the
student appropriates the source-text when he copies and pastes? 2. What are the
categories of analysis that allow us to look analytically and theoretically for the "ctrl
+ c / ctrl + v" practice made by the student? 2. how the studies developed in the
fields of "Genetic Criticism" (
Gr?sillon, 1987), the "school manuscripts" (Calil, 2004)
and "paraphrase" (Fuchs, 1982) may help in working with writing in the classroom
standing as a possible way to minimize the copy and paste effects in the students
texts? Thus, we observe the categories of analysis that allow us to look,
theoretically and analytically, for the symbolic ritual of the "ctrl + c" (copy) and "ctrl
+ v" (paste) in high school. Our study shows that the student text is a "hybrid body"
whose writing is a drawing entanglement because of the presence of the foreign
text, verbatim, and the presence of linguistic elements to paraphrase the original
text. This textual embodiment has, behind it, certain operations, namely: replacing,
moving, adding and deleting statements. Given the specificity of the data and the
research objectives, this study aligns with qualitative research methods
(SILVERMAN, 2009) and falls within the knowledge field of Applied Linguistics,
which is characterized especially by investigating problems, phenomena in which
language in a real situation is taken as central (BRUMFIT, 1995).Theoretically, our work follows the approach of studies on the paraphrase (Fuchs, 1982, 1994a,
1994b; DAUNAY, 1997, 1999, 2002a, 2002b), the studies developed in the field of
Genetic Criticism (
Gr?sillon, 1987, 1994, 1992, 2008 ) and those developed by
Eduardo Calil (2004) on "school manuscripts"

▼ Robin Hood is a subject which has received plenty of attention in recent years. However, many of the studies conducted in the field focus on either establishing a historicist basis to the myth or comparing it to similar outlaw tales. There is also a lack of investigation into twenty-first-century Robin Hood texts. To this end, this thesis combats the necessity of a historicist approach to the novel by accepting it as a myth, whilst also examining Robin Hood stories published after the year two-thousand, leaving the study relevant and contemporary. This thesis uses one of the first Robin Hood stories as a control text to examine how much the myth has changed in the twenty-first century, but as well as this, the thesis offers pathways of how these changes came about. There are three themes examined which are gender, location and social class, and these demonstrate the depth of change to the character and the malleability of the myth as a promotion of the author’s ideals. Whilst the many authors of Robin Hood texts attempt to individualise their own interpretation of the character, without exception, they are unable to escape the truth of their lineage. Despite this, each new Robin Hood text adds new elements to the character, and this evolution is the reason that Robin Hood has remained in the public sphere for hundreds of years.

Consumers' lack of value perception in the offer of regional agricultural products has forced rural producers to always compete for price. Even products recognized as "exclusive" Amazon also compete for space in this same segment. We have developed a study of branding strategies that can enable producers to change consumers' perception of value, thereby taking their products to another level of valuation, and hence price and profit margin. Through bibliographic and documentary research, we collect information about agribusiness (in Brazil and the state of Amazonas) and about branding. After identifying the Amazonian agribusiness productive chains and the branding strategies recommended by the literature, we induced which strategies would be more likely to have the expected positive impact on the perception of the value of the product. In order to make this information available to the interested public, we also consider the best option within graphic design to spread knowledge, taking into account the public profile, the context of use and the technical constraints inherent in printing processes. Thus, the proposed booklet contains the recommendations of branding strategies in a format that allows easy manipulation and storage. We further note that further studies of the application of one or more recommended strategies, as well as their effects on specific supply chains, are recommended.

▼ Systems biology aims at system-level understanding of biological systems, in particular cellular networks. The milestones of this understanding are knowledge of the structure of the system, understanding of its dynamics, effective control methods, and powerful prediction capability. The complexity of biological systems makes it inevitable to consider mathematical modeling in order to achieve these goals.
The enormous accumulation of experimental data representing the activities of the living cell has triggered an increasing interest in the reverse engineering of biological networks from data. In particular, construction of discrete models for reverse engineering of biological networks is receiving attention, with the goal of providing a coarse-grained description of such networks. In this dissertation we consider the modeling framework of polynomial dynamical systems over finite fields constructed from experimental data. We present and propose solutions to two problems inherent in this modeling method: the necessity of appropriate discretization of the data and the selection of a particular polynomial model from the set of all models that fit the data.
Data discretization, also known as binning, is a crucial issue for the construction of discrete models of biological networks. Experimental data are however usually continuous, or, at least, represented by computer floating point numbers. A major challenge in discretizing biological data, such as those collected through microarray experiments, is the typically small samples size. Many methods for discretization are not applicable due to the insufficient amount of data. The method proposed in this work is a first attempt to develop a discretization tool that takes into consideration the issues and limitations that are inherent in short data time courses. Our focus is on the two characteristics that any discretization method should possess in order to be used for dynamic modeling: preservation of dynamics and information content and inhibition of noise.
Given a set of data points, of particular importance in the construction of polynomial models for the reverse engineering of biological networks is the collection of all polynomials that vanish on this set of points, the so-called ideal of points. Polynomial ideals can be represented through a special finite generating set, known as
Gröbner basis, that possesses some desirable properties. For a given ideal, however, the
Gröbner basis may not be unique since its computation depends on the choice of leading terms for the multivariate polynomials in the ideal. The correspondence between data points and uniqueness of
Gröbner bases is studied in this dissertation. More specifically, an algorithm is developed for finding all minimal sets of points that, added to the given set, have a corresponding ideal of points with a unique
Gröbner basis. This question is of interest in itself but the main motivation for studying it was its relevance to the construction of polynomial dynamical systems.

A abordagem desenvolvida ?
In this work, we describe an approach to perform verification and synthesis in discrete control systems with state feedback over step response performance requirements in control systems which is based on counterexample-guided inductive synthesis techniques (CEGIS). In this approach there is a performance requirement (e.g., settling time and maximum overshoot) in a given control system in order to know if it satisfies the desired value for that requirement, if it does not satisfy, one must find a system that satisfies the desired requirement, in which case the system controller is reset. For the generation of the controller, we use a learning technique where each iteration that the verification of the requirement does not satisfy, we learn that this controller is not worthy. In the verification of these performance requirements in discrete control systems, we consider the fragility (numerical…

This thesis focuses on the development of innovative and efficient materials for the fabrication of the buffer layer of Cu(In,Ga)Se2 (CIGS) thin film solar cells. For the first time, In2(S,O)3 and Zn(O,S) thin films were synthesized by Plasma Enhanced Atomic Layer Deposition (PEALD) in order to substitute the conventional cadmium sulfide buffer layer. By creating reactive species, this deposition technique allows reactions which could not be possible using thermal ALD. The comparison of both methods allows the evaluation of their respective assets and constraints. For instance, In2(S,O)3 thin films could only be achieved using PEALD through exchange reaction mechanisms between oxygen radicals from the plasma and sulfur atoms of In2S3 growing film. In order to obtain CIGS/In2(S,O)3 solar cells with efficiencies of 11.9%, the initial deposition process was improved by correlating X-Ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy and Quadrupole Mass Spectrometry analyses. At the same time, the deposition temperature proved to have a crucial effect on CIGS/Zn(O,S)-ALD device opto-electronic properties and we evidenced the existence of two deposition temperature ranges, at Tdep < 160°C and Tdep > 200°C, where the performances are enhanced. In the low temperature range, the high performances were explained by specific Zn(O,S) properties, while at high temperature they are enhanced by favorable interdiffusion mechanisms at the…

The chronic stress is an important cause of fertility disorders in female. Stress-induced hypercorticism (excessive secretion of glucocorticoids (GC)) acts on the reproductive axis to disrupt the estrous cycle and ovulation. In female, the reproductive axis comprises 3 structures: the hypothalamus, the pituitary and the ovary. To block the activity of this axis, GC act through a specific receptor (GR) to promote rapid non genomic and/or late genomic signaling. Despite extensive researches, knowledge on the mechanism of action of GC on this axis remains elusive. During my PhD, the use of different cellular and animal models allowed to highlight new mechanisms of GC actions on the…

▼ Protein degradation poses a significant challenge
for the efficient production of recombinant proteins in plants,
affecting the stability and yield of the recombinant protein. In
this study the E. coli-derived enzyme glutathione reductase (
GR)
was transiently expressed in transgenic tobacco plants
constitutively expressing the cysteine protease inhibitor OC-I and
non-transgenic plants. A protein resembling the
GR was detected in
infiltrated leaves. Transiently expressing
GR in transgenic N
tabacum plants resulted in almost two fold significant increases in
GR activity. Transgenic tobacco plants expressing the rice cysteine
protease inhibitor OC-I had significantly lower cysteine protease
activity when compared to non-transgenic tobacco plants. Lower
cysteine protease activity in transgenic plants was directly
related to higher
GR activity and also higher
GR amounts in
transgenic plants. The study has demonstrated that OC-I is an
effective companion protease inhibitor candidate with the potential
to protect other high value proteins such as
GR, from cysteine
protease degradation.

▼ In wound healing, early infiltration of neutrophils followed by macrophage infiltration are important defense mechanisms for repair of tissue damage. Here we examined the effects of neutrophils on wound healing. Administration of sodium hypochlorite (NaClO) to mouse skin induces neutrophil recruitment to the wound site and repeated administration of NaClO was shown to prolong wound healing. Examination of the spleens of mice whose wounds were repeatedly treated with NaClO, showed that GR-1^+CD11b^+ cells were up regulated in the recovery phase of wounding. Many of the GR-1^+CD11b^+ cells in the mouse bone marrow were neutrophils, as indicated by a ring-shaped nucleus, and some of the cells were immature myeloid-lineage cells. GR-1^+CD11b^+ cells from bone marrow were sorted and injected intravenously to syngeneic Imprinting Control Region (ICR) mice. The mice that received GR-1^+CD11b^+ cells recovered faster than the mice injected with the control, phosphate buffer saline (PBS).

▼ Celwydd golau, or “light lie”, is the Welsh term for the tall tale. Tall tales, a genre of
folklore characterized by their exaggerated qualities, are common internationally, although
scholarship on the genre has focused on the American examples. The goal of this study is to
provide an overview of the genre as it exists in the Welsh folk tradition, making use of the
folklore archive at St. Fagans National History Museum. The first chapter of this study is a
review of existing literature on the tall tale, as well as an examination of the American tall
tale tradition and the history of Welsh folklore collecting. The second chapter examines
celwydd golau about animals found in the archive at St. Fagans National History Museum,
while the third chapter examines celwydd golau about linguistic mistakes in Welsh and
English. The fourth chapter concludes the study by summarizing the previous chapters and
offering any final thoughts as well as potential further avenues of study. There are also four
appendices to this study. Appendix A offers summaries of the celwydd golau about animals,
while Appendix B offers summaries of the celwydd golau about linguistic mistakes.
Appendix C offers some brief biographical data about several of the tellers mentioned
multiple times, as well as a list of celwydd golau associated with them. Appendix D consists
of a series of maps, documenting the locations from which each example was collected

▼ This research looks at the textuality of hiplife – the Ghanaian version of hip hop – by investigating the hiplife discursive and non discursive practices. The thesis is that hiplife is a major platform for Ghanaian youth cultural expression. I choose the qualitative methodology because it meets the subtle demand of an enquiry on expressive culture like hiplife. Using focus group discussion, interviews and participant observation to collect data from the whole country with emphasis on the four main cities, the research analyses transcribed data and comes up with various findings. These include the fact that hiplife started with the quest of Ghanaian youth for a syncretic culture, the combination of local and foreign cultures, mediated by DJs, artistes and sites. It also reveals that it is the rhythm of the Akan drum language that provides the rhythmic complexion of hiplife. Again, as a platform for youth expression, hiplife expresses new values – new social truths, a common destiny and protest against hegemony. Furthermore, hiplife appropriates the “looking glass” concept to circulate its cultural expression and ideologies in and out of Ghana. Such a visibility is also taken advantage of by the Ghanaian women to address their gender concerns.

▼ In my thesis, I describe new results in the thermodynamics of black holes in two gravitational scenarios: spacetime anisotropy and higher curvature gravity. I focus on classifying the critical point of "Large Black Hole / Small Black Hole" phase transitions in higher curvature gravity in various dimensions, for both numerical and analytic black hole solutions. Special emphasis will be placed on five-dimensional cubic and quartic quasitopological gravity. I cover the motivation and document a number of higher curvature black hole solutions as well as the thermodynamic behaviour of these black holes when they are asymptotically Lifshitz symmetric (a form of anisotropy). I describe the methodology used to construct the set of thermodynamic potentials for black holes with general asymptotics from a collection of well-justified conjectures, followed by the development of procedures to numerically and analytically determine unknown quantities such as mass and thermodynamic volume from these conjectures. I will complete this thesis by extracting the critical exponents and thereby finding the universality class of the critical behaviour for a number of black hole solutions. This work has implications for the study of the gauge/gravity duality as well as for the dynamical behaviour of black holes.

▼ ΑBSTRACT. Purpose: To examine if the human glucocorticoid receptor (hGR) isoform-α mRNA and hGR protein expressions are deficient in the acute phase of sepsis (S) compared to systemic inflammatory response syndrome (SIRS) and healthy subjects (H). To evaluate if the hGRα and hGR alterations are associated with cortisol changes, and if they are related to: 1) extracellular and intracellular heat shock proteins (HSP) 72 and 90α; 2) ACTH, prolactin, and interleukins (ILs); 3) the outcome. Methods: Patients consecutively admitted to a University Hospital Intensive Care Unit (ICU) with S (n=48) or SIRS (n=40) were enrolled in the study. Thirty-five H were also included. Total mRNA was isolated from peripheral blood samples and cDNA was prepared. RT-PCR was performed. Intracellular hGR and HSPs expression in monocytes and/or neutrophils was evaluated using 4-colour flow cytometry. Serum prolactin, ACTH and cortisol concentrations were also measured. ELISA was used to evaluate serum ILs and extracellular (e) HSPs (eHSP72, eHSP90α). Results: hGR protein was higher in S compared to H and SIRS; hGRα mRNA was higher in S compared to H (p<0.05). In sepsis, hGR protein and eHSP72 were higher among non-survivors compared to survivors (p<0.05). The hGR MFI and hGRα mRNA fold change were significantly related to each other (rs=0.64, p<0.001). Monocyte hGR protein expression was positively correlated to extracellular and intracellular HSPs, cortisol, and ILs and negatively to organ dysfunction (p<0.05). HSPs, hGR, and cortisol were able to discriminate sepsis from SIRS (AUROC >0.85, p<0.05). In sepsis, monocyte-hGR protein and eHSP72 were strong predictors of mortality (AUROC >0.95 p<0.04).Conclusions: Acute-phase sepsis is associated with increased hGR expression and cortisol concentrations, possibly implying no need for exogenous steroids. At this stage, hGR is able to predict sepsis and outcome, and is related to stress-activated bio-molecules and organ dysfunction.

This work was structured around the modulation of the electronic properties of graphene obtained via the CVD growth on copper substrate and/or the graphitization of the carbon atoms in the SiC substrate. One of the objectives was the design of electrodes (front or rear) for photovoltaic cells, among other applications. Different doping techniques have been implemented for modulating the work function (WF) and the electron mobility i.e. the incorporation of nitrogen in-situ during the growth, ex-situ incorporation by nitric acid and/or nano gold colloids (AuCl3). In this work, various characterization techniques were employed including atomic force microscopy (AFM), Raman spectroscopy, photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS and UPS), electrical transport measurements by Hall and field effect. These techniques have enabled us to determine the homogeneity , thecrystalline quality of the material, the carrier density, the electrical resistance and the electron mobility of different intrinsic and doped samples. Furthermore, we showed that it is possible to modulate the WF graphene by fabricating a heterostructure composed of PECVD amorphous silicon doped N or P deposited onto the graphene. This approach is of particular interest for replacement of ITO with graphene as transparent electrode. This result was confirmed by the study detailed spectra of the XPS and Raman vibrational states. The electronic transport measurements showed a charge…

▼ In 2005 only did statistical analysis indicate a significant cotton density effect with respect to soybean yield. Means separation analysis indicated a lower soybean yield for only the highest cotton density of 5.25 plants /row m-1 when compared to other cotton densities. In 2004 and 2005, statistical analysis indicated no significant cotton interference interval effect on soybean height nor yield in 2004. A significant linear relationship between cotton interference period and soybean yield was observed in 2005. Based on best fit regression equation, a soybean yield reduction for an interference interval of 8 wk would equate to a minimal yield decrease of only 3.3% when calculated from the intercept value. With respect to cotton height, a linear relationship with soybean density was observed both years in Louisiana but not in North Carolina. Based on results at St. Joseph in 2004, height reductions of 6, 3, 1.2, and 0.6% can be expected following season-long competition with soybean densities of 3.3 plants/row m-1, 1.6 plants/row m-1, 0.7 plants/row m-1, and 0.3 plants/row m-1, respectively. Based on 2005 St. Joseph results, expected height reduction was 0, 10.6, 11.3, and 7% for these respective densities. At North Carolina, there was not a significant height effect was not observed. Based on results at St. Joseph in 2004, seed cotton yield reduction of 30, 15, 6, and 3% can be expected at the respective densities. Based on 2005 Louisiana and North Carolina results, expected yield reduction for these densities were similar at 37, 19, 7, and 4% and 21, 11, 4, and 2% respectively. At St. Joseph in 2004, a significant linear relationship between interference period and cotton height was observed. Soybean interference for 4 and 8 wk would result in an expected cotton height reduction of 3 and 5%, respectively. Based on 2004 results in Louisiana and North Carolina, a seed cotton yield reduction greater than 4% can be expected beginning with 4 wk soybean interference, however, in 2005 in Louisiana a similar yield reduction can be expected beginning at 2 wk.

This thesis is at the intersection of several fields of economic research of innovation. Our approach uses empirical results from the econometrics of innovation. To study the relationship between innovation and demand, the most suitable seems to be the endogenous growth model based on innovation as opposed to the exogenous growth model. The nature and the direction of this relationship have been explored by various economic flows that can be classified into two major schools. The first are the proponents of so-called “Technology-Push Innovation” which may be regarded very broadly as “learned” by the work of Joseph Schumpeter. The latter are the proponents of the approach “Demand-Pull Innovation”, whose pioneering works have been baptized by Jacob Schmookler. The works of Kleinknecht and Verspagen (1990) have greatly inspired us to start this thesis. Our approach is an extension of this analysis. The purpose of this thesis is twofold: 1) showing that the relationship between innovation and demand is not unidirectional, 2) and this…

Oil in water (O/W) nanoemulsions have been used for over 50 years in human clinics as a lipids source in parenteral nutrition. Even if nanoemulsions have recently emerged as vehicles for lipophilic active pharmaceutical ingredient (API) their use as a therapeutic or diagnostic agent is still under-exploited. The objective of this Ph.D thesis was to develop an nanoemulsions platform as an alternative to conventionally used nanosystems. In this work, 2 applications have been studied: the diagnosis of vulnerable plaque in atherosclerosis, and the treatment of Parkinson's disease. Nanoemulsions have been functionalized with humanized antibody targeting atheroma and loaded with magnetic particles as molecular contrast agents for magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and an emerging technique: magnetic particle imaging (MPI). The successful plaque targeting has been demonstrated in atheromatous mice. The inclusion of original and ultra-bright lipophilic chromophores as well as the loading of API have paved the way to the development of multimodal and theranostic formulations. Therapeutic…

Nowadays, attacks against computer systems may involve hardware components in order to bypass the numerous countermeasures against malicious software. This PhD thesis focuses on this novel class of attacks and specifically deals with Input/Output attacks. In such attacks, attackers divert legitimate hardware features, such as I/O mechanisms, to achieve different malicious actions. Since detecting such attacks by conventional software techniques is not easy (as far as they do not require the intervention of the CPU), we have analyzed these attacks in order to propose appropriate countermeasures based mainly on reliable and unavoidable hardware components. This manuscript focuses on two cases : hardware components that can be deliberately designed to be malicious and acting in the same way as a program incorporating a Trojan horse ; and vulnerable hardware components that have been modified by a hacker, either locally or through the network, to include malicious functions (typically a backdoor in the…

▼ Urothelial carcinoma is one of the most prevalent
cancers encountered in the country, and recent investigations
demonstrate the important role of glucocorticoid signaling in the
disease. We have shown that an alternate isoform of the
glucocorticoid receptor (
GR), GRß, causes migration of human
urothelial carcinoma cells. We begin with a literature review of
the role of GRß and another nuclear receptor, the androgen
receptor, in urothelial carcinoma. Next, we investigate the role of
GRß in the migration of human urothelial carcinoma cells in two
transitional human uroepithelial carcinoma cells, UMUC-3 and T24.
We found that the T24 cells have higher GRß expression compared to
the UMUC-3, and that both cell lines had a similar GRa level.
Interestingly, the higher GRß expression was correlated with
enhanced migration rates, which was reduced with GRß inhibition.
In-silco analysis of the 3’ untranslated region (3’UTR) of human
GRß revealed a potential micro-RNA (miRNA) binding site for miR33a,
miR144, and miR181. Therefore, we cloned the 3’UTR of human GRß and
mutated the miRNA binding sites, which showed that miR144
positively regulates GRß expression. In addition, miR144 and GRß
expression were increased during migration of uroepithelial
carcinoma cells. Therefore, we constructed a peptide nucleic acid
(PNA) conjugated to a cell penetrating-peptide (CPP) that we termed
Sweet-P to inhibit the miR144 binding site in the 3’UTR of human
GRß. Furthermore, Sweet-P decreased GRß expression and, as a
result, inhibited migration of uroepithelial carcinoma cells,
demonstrating its potential as a therapeutic. We then complete the
thesis with a discussion of the potential for Sweet-P in cancer
therapy and other GRß-related diseases, which may serve as the
first anti-GRß drug.
