Waste production is the great characteristic of the present consumer society, for this reason sanitary landfills become fundamental elements for environmentally adequate disposal (Law 12305/10). It’s necessary to design, manage, deactivate, and revitalize them. Originally far from the urban centers, when they are deactivated they become abandoned areas and obstacles to the development of the urban network. This research was carried out aiming to contribute to the evaluation of the investigation of the sanitary landfills geomechanics behavior based on laboratory and field tests. The adopted methodology was to select the site for the execution of the study, to collect deformed samples from the covering soil and the MSW (municipal solid waste), physical characterization of the covering soil and MSW, laboratory and field tests, results presentation,
results analysis and thesis writing. The place chosen was the Metropolitan Sanitary Landfill of Caucaia - ASMOC. Two sets of tests were performed, one of laboratory and one of field. The laboratory tests performed were: gravimetric composition and, in the solid portion: granulometry, plasticity index, real density, organic matter content, compaction, California support index, expansion and direct shear test. In the case of the field tests, percussion drilling tests (SPT), direct load tests (PCD) were performed, all in the MSW of the Experimental Cell and in the MSW of the Old Landfill. The GeoGauge tests were also performed at the MSW of Experimental Cell and in the MSW of the Old Landfill, but also in the covering soil. From these tests the modulus elasticity was estimated and compared its estimates. It was predicted the relation of pressure vs. hold pressure of the MSW in the Experimental Cell and in the Old Landfill from a 50 cm diameter plate, considering the same pressure stages
applied in plate tests carried out in the mentioned MSW masses. Several conclusions were made: (1) the E…

▼ The behavior of unsaturated soils depends heavily on material properties and soil conditions. In Geotechnical Engineering, compacted soils are frequently used as fill material, and quality control is vital to the construction process. There are few methods available to estimate the parameters associated with unsaturated soils based on field measurements, and a relationship between these factors could reduce testing time and lower construction costs. Undrained triaxial tests were performed on four clays representing a range of material properties in an effort to reach the maximum dry density, which provides the highest bearing capacity. Each clay was compacted at optimum moisture content, as well as wet and dry of optimum. Measurements were taken using the GeoGauge and shear wave velocities. An empirical approach was used to estimate the effect of a density gradient on soil suction. A relationship between the normal stress and matric suction produced a strong trend when plotted against a function of stiffness and the void ratio, which represents a density gradient. Another relationship between the GeoGauge and shear wave stiffness measurements was found, but no relationship with the material properties of the samples was observed, indicating that more in-depth research is needed to find a stronger relationship.

In the mechanistic-empirical dimensioning methods of asphalt pavements, one of the main input parameters for the granular layers is the Resilience Module (MR), being important the development and diffusion of methods and equipment that aim to measure this property in the field. Geogauge is an equipment that seeks to determine the resilience modules of the pavement
layers in situ, however, the modules obtained through it, differ from those determined in the triaxial test of repeated loads (TCR), due to several factors, such as: the difference On loading, the degree of compaction, humidity, etc. Thus, the present dissertation proposes to determine resilience modules of granular layers of pavements in situ, with Geogauge equipment, that allow to obtain correlations between the modules determined in the field and those obtained in the laboratory with the TCR test. For this, the materials of the different layers of the pavement, coming from road sections running in the state of Ceará, were tested both in the field, with the Geogauge, and in the laboratory, with the TCR test. The road segments used in this research refer to a 600-meter section of a highway and an experimental stretch of the Federal University of Ceará. In both, in situ tests, such as the sand vial tests, determinations of the humidity, and tests with the Geogauge equipment were
carried out. In addition, samples were collected to perform laboratory tests, being: granulometry, LL, LP, compaction, CBR and MR assays. From the data obtained in the field and in the laboratory, a statistical analysis of regression was performed, being possible to determine a significant regression model to correlate the determined MRs with Geogauge and with the TCR, for a specific state of tension and granular material. It was also verified that the tests carried out with Geogauge present a good repeatability and reproducibility in general, being able to detect constructive problems, presenting potential to be used in the technological control of granular layers of flexible pavements.

▼ With the coming changes from an empirical to mechanistic-empirical pavement design, it becomes essential to move towards changing the quality control/quality assurance (QC/QA) procedures of compacted materials from a unit weight-based criterion to a stiffness/strength based criterion. The non-destructive in-situ tests such as Geogauge, Dynamic Cone Penetrometer (DCP), and Light Falling Weight Deflectometer (LFWD) can be used as effective tools in the assessment of subsurface conditions and in evaluating the stiffness of pavement materials and embankment. This thesis evaluates the potential use of these three devices to reliably measure the stiffness characteristics of highway materials for possible application in the QC/QA procedures during and after the construction of pavement layers and embankments. To achieve this, field tests were conducted on highway sections selected from different projects in Louisiana State. In addition, six test sections and three trench sections were constructed and tested at the LTRC Accelerated Load Facility (ALF) site for testing. The field tests included conducting Geogauge, LFWD, DCP tests and standard tests such as the Plate Load Test (PLT) and Falling Weight Deflectometer (FWD) test. The California Bearing Ratio (CBR) laboratory tests were also conducted on samples collected during field tests. Statistical analysis was conducted to correlate the measurements obtained from the three investigated devices and those obtained from the standard tests. Good correlations were obtained between the measurements of the investigated devices and the standard tests. Laboratory tests were also conducted to evaluate the influence depth of the Geogauge and LFWD devices. The results of laboratory tests indicated that the average influence depth for the Geogauge and LFWD devices are about 200 mm and 280 mm, respectively.

▼ There are new in-situ test devices such as the Geogauge, Light Falling Weight Deflectometer (LFWD) and Dynamic Cone Penetrometer (DCP). Unlike the nuclear density gauge, the new methods provide measurements based on the engineering properties (strength/stiffness) of soil instead of physical properties like field density and moisture content. However the geogauge, LFWD and the DCP are not yet proven to be reliable and the correlations of these tests with standard tests are limited. An extensive laboratory investigation was carried out to evaluate the Geogauge, LFWD and DCP as potential tests to measure in-situ stiffness of highway materials and embankments. In this study, test layers were prepared in two boxes that measure 5 ft length x 3 ft width x 2 ft depth at Louisiana Transportation Research Center (LTRC) Geosynthetic Engineering Research Laboratory (GERL). The results from a series of laboratory tests on embankment soils and base course materials were used to correlate Geogauge, LFWD, Dynamic Cone Penetrometer (DCP) measurements with the Plate Load Test (PLT) and California Bearing Ratio (CBR). There is good correlation between the LFWD dynamic modulus and PLT elastic modulus. The LFWD is a better alternative for static PLT compared to the Geogauge. Although LFWD is a dynamic test, the similarity in depth of influence with the PLT and the quality of developed correlations suggests that the LFWD has better potential to replace the PLT. There is no significant correlation between the LFWD and the CBR test. The Geogauge and the DCP correlates better with the CBR and DCP is already proven to be an effective tool to estimate in-situ CBR. Based on the developed correlations and laboratory experience, it was found that the investigated devices have the potential to measure in-situ stiffness of highway materials and embankments.

Ligeiro (DIL), do
GeoGauge (GG) e do Densímetro Elétrico (DE). No entanto, realizaramse
Adicionalmente,
