▼ Oil and natural gas production throughout the United States has been dramatically increasing in recent years, due in large part to hydraulic fracturing processes and horizontal drilling techniques that allow for extraction from unconventional wells. The rise in well drilling and completion activities raises concern over potential air quality impacts on nearby communities. Methane, other volatile organic compounds (VOCs), and nitrogen oxides (NOₓ) may be emitted into the atmosphere during well development and production activities. Methane is a greenhouse gas, VOCs and NOₓ act as ozone precursors, and some VOCs are classified as air toxics. For these reasons, there is a need to accurately quantify the rate of emissions of these gases into the atmosphere from oil and gas development and production. One such emission rate estimation technique is the tracer ratio method (TRM). The TRM requires access to a well site and involves the release of a passive tracer gas as close to the source of emissions as possible. This known emission rate is multiplied by the ratio of the downwind concentrations of emission gas to the tracer gas (both in excess of background) to derive an estimate of the emission gas emission rate. Another technique, recently developed by the Environment Protection Agency, utilizes a simplified point source Gaussian plume (PSG) dispersion model. This approach requires only one mobile downwind measurement location for both concentration and meteorological measurements, without the need for site access; it does not require a tracer gas. In order to evaluate the effectiveness of these techniques, a series of experiments were conducted at Christman airfield in Fort Collins, Colorado. These experiments involved releasing both acetylene, as a tracer gas, and methane (to simulate an emission source) at controlled flow rates to compare the predicted emission rate of methane to its actual emission rate. A vehicle equipped with a PICARRO methane and acetylene analyzer traversed or remained stationary within the gas plume to provide real-time concentration measurements of both gases. A 3-D sonic anemometer was used to characterize local meteorological conditions. The TRM is evaluated using both a mobile transect and a stationary approach. There is an overall positive bias in both cases. Our best results are obtained when sources are co-located during a stationary analysis and changes in background methane concentrations are determined and corrected. In these cases the mean bias is +9% with σ=22% (standard deviation about the mean bias). The separation of tracer and emission gas sources in the mobile transect analysis is the largest cause for uncertainty. The mean bias when sources are separated is +83% (σ=99%), as opposed to transect analyses of co-located sources which have a mean bias of +33% (σ=31%). The PSG technique, which involves a 20 minute stationary analysis, contains more inconsistent results compared to the stationary approach performed by the TRM (mean bias of methane emission rate prediction… Advisors/Committee Members: Collett, Jeffrey L. ▼ The emergence of remote and online sensing devices results in big spatial data sets for which developing powerful predictive models are of great interest. Given a spatio-temporally indexed data set, Gaussian Random Field (GRF) models are powerful prediction/classification tools which are used in different fields, e.g., in machine learning, geostatistics, and in engineering. In this thesis, we propose new methods for fitting different GRF models to large spatial data sets. From an optimization perspective, we seek computationally efficient algorithms that scale well with the size of the data sets. From a statistical perspective, we explore the convergence bounds of the resulting optimal estimators. A first goal of this dissertation is to propose an efficient algorithm that fits a second-order stationary and isotropic GRF model to large data sets. The dominant frequentist approach is Maximum Likelihood (ML) which requires non-convex optimization. The problem is aggravated in big data settings, given the \cO(n³) computational complexity of the ML method, where n denotes the number of spatio-temporal data points. We make connections with the covariance selection problem and propose a two-stage algorithm with linear convergence in the first stage and a second stage that consists of solving a convex problem for a large class of spatial covariance functions. Furthermore, with proper tuning of a sparsity parameter in the first stage, the proposed algorithm has a theoretical convergence bound, in general. Large datasets are handled by two blocking (i.e., segmentation) schemes that enable parallel computation and ensure, without further formulation, that the predicted surface has no discontinuities at the block boundaries in contrast to other recently proposed GRF fitting methods for large datasets that also rely on segmentation. Our second goal in this thesis is to extend the proposed methods to more general classes of GRF models. The first extension consists of estimating the parameters of an anisotropic covariance function where convexity of the second stage optimization problem is shown for a dominant class of exponential covariance functions. Next, a novel algorithm is proposed for fitting multivariate GRF models with separable covariance functions. The proposed algorithm fits a multivariate GRF in four stages with provable convergence rates that highly benefits from parallel processing capabilities. Finally, an extension of the proposed algorithm for prediction problems under a class of continuous, non-Gaussian data known to have a nonparanormal distribution is studied. Applications of GRFs in modeling manufactured surfaces, emulating expensive to evaluate computer simulations, and predicting meteorological fields are presented towards the end of this dissertation. ▼ This thesis considers methods for synthesis of linear quadratic controllers for large-scale, interconnected systems. Conventional methods that solve the linear quadratic control problem are only applicable to systems with moderate size, due to the rapid increase in both computational time and memory requirements as the system size increases. The methods presented in this thesis show a much slower increase in these requirements when faced with system matrices with a sparse structure. Hence, they are useful for control design for systems of large order, since they usually have sparse systems matrices. An equally important feature of the methods is that the controllers are restricted to have a distributed nature, meaning that they respect a potential interconnection structure of the system. The controllers considered in the thesis have the same structure as the centralized LQG solution, that is, they are consisting of a state predictor and feedback from the estimated states. Strategies for determining the feedback matrix and predictor matrix separately, are suggested. The strategies use gradient directions of the cost function to iteratively approach a locally optimal solution in either problem. A scheme to determine bounds on the degree of suboptimality of the partial solution in every iteration, is presented. It is also shown that these bounds can be combined to give a bound on the degree of suboptimality of the full output feedback controller. Another method that treats the synthesis of the feedback matrix and predictor matrix simultaneously is also presented. The functionality of the developed methods is illustrated by an application, where the methods are used to compute controllers for a large deformable mirror, found in a telescope to compensate for atmospheric disturbances. The model of the mirror is obtained by discretizing a partial differential equation. This gives a linear, sparse representation of the mirror with a very large state space, which is suitable for the methods presented in the thesis. The performance of the controllers is evaluated using performance measures from the adaptive optics community.

O Método da Coordenada Geradora Hartree-Fock Polinomial (pMCG-HF), desenvolvido por R.C. Barbosa e A.B.F. da Silva [1], é uma ferramenta matemática valiosa que permite gerar funções de base (também conhecidas como conjuntos de base). As funções de base geradas por este método têm um bom comportamento e são capazes de calcular valores precisos de propriedades eletrônicas moleculares. Porém, depois de gerar funções de base do hidrogênio até o flúor [2], fez-se necessário a adição de expoentes à função de base, correspondentes a cada átomo, para melhor adaptação à realização dos cálculos moleculares. Estas funções adicionais são o que chamamos de funções de polarização. A adição de funções de polarização, através de otimização computacional, é muito custosa, deste modo o desenvolvimento de uma regra de polarização para se esquivar desta otimização é de grande importância e por isso se transforma na beleza e no objetivo deste trabalho. Portanto, nesta dissertação, estudar-se-á um procedimento para escolher funções de polarização que reduza drasticamente o tempo computacional, no sentido de permitir uma seleção, mais simples, de expoentes da própria função de base primitiva para serem usadas nas funções de polarização p, d, f, g, etc. para a obtenção de propriedades moleculares calculadas através de métodos químico-quânticos

The polynomial generate coordinate method pGCM developed by R.C. Barbosa and A.B.F. da Silva [1] is an remarkble mathematic tool for the generation of basis functions (also known as basis sets). The basis sets generated from this method have a good behavior and are able to produce accurate values for electronic molecular properties. In fact, after generating a basis set [2] we need to add a set of exponent functions in order to better adequate a basis set to perform molecular calculations. These sets of additional functions are called polarizations functions. This work provides a methodology where the polarization functions are obtained from the initial basis set (the primitive set) without optimizing them separately by using optimization algorithms that are, computationally speaking, very costly. This procedure reduces drastically the computational time used to find polarization functions to be used in molecular quantum chemical calculations. Our methodology permits to choose the polarization functions directly from the primitive orbital exponents of each atomic symmetry s, p, d, f etc. in a very simple manner. The finding of polarization functions using our methodology was performed with several quantum chemical methods.

▼ This work reports the system integration of the underwater seafloor laser scanner, designed and fabricated by Institute of Undersea Technology, National Sun Yat-sen University, with the in situ porosity measurement system, known as IMP2, developed by Applied Physics Lab, University of Washington. Our original prototype underwater seafloor laser scanner worked more like an indoor experimental setup rather than an instrument. It is the goal of this work to modify the detail design of hardware and software of the system such that the operation of the scanner and the data analysis of the results can be done like a commercial instrument. Our laser scanning module adopts structural light method with a single camera approach. The calibration of the camera is achieved with a template board on which sets of grid points are laid with numerical control milling machine. These grid points are used to create longitudinal and latitudinal lines for pixel-to-coordinate conversion. Three sub-pixel sampling methods, namely, intensity weighted centroid, second order polynomial intensity fitting and Gaussian intensity fitting, are developed to locate the center of the laser light strip on pixel plane and to be converted into engineering coordinates. For the convenience of post-processing, grid point meshing and spectrum analysis packages are built-in to provide standard output for further studies. The overall performance of the system was validated by four tests in indoor tanks and field as well. One scanning in air was undertaken to verify if synchronization signal between the laser scanner and the motion of the linear track was correct; several models of known dimension were placed in the water tank for scanning to see if the system reaches the desired accuracy; an integration of the laser scanner and the IMP2 was tested prior to the deployment in the sea, and a scanning a artificial seafloor model of known spatial spectra indicated the proper functioning of the combined system; finally a successful 20-meter deep field deployment and retrieve assured the bases for the acquisition of seafloor roughness field for acoustics related research. ▼ This dissertation consists of three essays on modeling and parameter estimation for covariance non-stationary processes. The first essay considers the non-linear deformation of time scale for G(lambda)-stationary processes developed by Jiang, Gray and Woodward [2006]. After the appropriate Box-Cox transformation, processes which are nonstationary in the regular time domain, become stationary in the transformed time scale, thus allowing application of traditional econometric tools. We also study the consistency properties of the Q-statistic which is used to estimate parameters of time deformation connecting regular and transformed time scales. As an empirical illustration, the cyclical behavior of the U.S. unemployment series is studied in the context of a structural time series model with explicit trend and cycle modeling. Fitting the model in the deformed time provides different frequency estimates as well as improved inference statistic comparing to the model estimated in the regular time domain. Second essay investigates the case when the parameters of time deformation for G(lambda)-stationary processes are time-varying, thereby allowing cyclical behavior to vary over the observed data interval. Forecast of unemployment series performed in the deformed time with varying frequencies provides a better fit to the data over the long-term forecasting horizon. We also estimate the dynamics of parameter lambda and show that it can be modeled by first-order Markov chain process. While there are many works considering application of Markov-switching models to macroeconomics series, our approach is different in the sense that we consider regime shifts not in the original data, but in the time scale along which the data is measured. In the last essay we consider Method of Moments (MM) as an alternative approach for the parameter estimation in State Space models (SSM). Estimation and inference in non-Gaussian or non-linear models is usually carried out using importance sampling or Monte Carlo simulation methods. Our method is different in the way that it allows us to relax the assumptions about the data distribution or about the potential non-linearity embedded into the model. Thus, it can be used as the general tool for models of unknown or not tractable form. At the same time our approach appears to be more efficient since it does not require analytical or computational solution for the approximating models, and does not rely on simulation or sampling techniques. Using Kalman filter and smoother equations, we derive a set of moment conditions, and investigate performance of MM estimation in the series of Monte Carlo simulations for common types of SSM, as well as for several empirical examples described in literature. Our results indicate that Method of Moments provides adequate results for the regular Gaussian linear SSM. At the same time, for non-Gaussian and non-linear models our approach can compete with Bayesian and importance sampling estimation methods. Advisors/Committee Members: Dr. John J. ▼ Le vieillissement fait actuellement l’objet de toutes les attentions, constituant en effet un problème de santé publique majeur. Sa description reste cependant complexe en raison des intrications à la fois individuelles et collectives de sa conceptualisation et d’une dimension subjective forte. Les professionnels de santé sont de plus en plus obligés d’intégrer cette donnée dans leur réflexion et de proposer des protocoles de prise en charge adaptés. Le vieillissement est une évolution inéluctable du corps dont la quantification est établie par l’âge dépendant du temps dit « chronologique ». Ce critère âge est cependant imparfait pour mesurer l’usure réelle du corps soumise à de nombreux facteurs modificateurs dépendant des individus. Aussi, partant de réflexions déjà engagées et consistant à substituer cet âge chronologique par un critère composite appelé « âge biologique », aboutissant à la création d’un indicateur ou score de vieillissement et sensé davantage refléter le vieillissement individuel, une nouvelle méthodologie est proposée adaptée à la pratique de médecine générale. Une première phase de ce travail a consisté à sonder les médecins généralistes sur leur perception et leur utilisation des scores cliniques en pratique courante par l’intermédiaire d’une enquête qualitative et quantitative effectuée en France métropolitaine. Cette étude a montré que l’adéquation entre l’utilisation déclarée et la conception intellectualisée des scores restait dissociée. Les scores constituent un outil d’aide à la prise en charge utile pour cibler une approche systémique souvent complexe dans la mesure où ils sont simples à utiliser (peu d’items et items adaptés à la pratique) et à la validité scientifiquement comprise par le médecin. Par ailleurs, l’âge du patient a été cité comme un élément prépondérant influençant le choix adéquat du score par le médecin généraliste. Cette base de travail a donc servi à proposer une modélisation de l’âge biologique dont la réflexion a porté tant sur le choix du modèle mathématique que des variables constitutives de ce modèle. Une sélection de variables marqueurs du vieillissement a été effectuée à partir d’une revue de la littérature et tenant compte de leur possible intégration dans le processus de soin en médecine générale. Cette sélection a été consolidée par une approche mathématique selon un processus de sélection ascendant à partir d’un modèle régressif. Une population dite « témoin » au vieillissement considéré comme normal a été ensuite constituée servant de base comparative au calcul de l’âge biologique. Son choix a été influencé dans un premier temps par les données de la littérature puis secondairement selon un tri par classification utilisant la méthode des nuées dynamiques. Un modèle de régression linéaire simple a ensuite été construit mais avec de données normalisées selon la méthode des copules gaussiennes suivi d’une étude des queues de distribution marginales. The hydrologic response of urban catchments is sensitive to small scale space-time rainfall variations. A stochastic space-time rainfall model used for design purposes must reproduce important statistics at these small scales. However, current rainfall models make simplifying assumptions about the temporal characteristics of rainfields and thus cannot be expected to reproduce important statistics over various space and time scales. In this study, an extensive investigation of radar rainfall data for the Sydney region motivated the development of a new phenomenological hierarchical stochastic model to robustly simulate rainfall fields consistent with 10-minute 1-km2 pixel radar images. The hierarchical framework consists of three levels. The development of the first two levels which simulate the evolution of rainfall fields for a single storm is the focus of this thesis. The third level, which is designed for simulation of storm sequences, is left for future research. The first level simulates a latent Gaussian random field conditioned on the previous time step, , which is transformed to a rain field using a power transformation. A Toeplitz block circulant technique is used to achieve fast and accurate simulations of large Gaussian random fields (with lattice of 256 by 256), and is shown to be hugely more efficient than the traditional Cholesky decomposition method. In the second level, first-order autoregressive (AR(1)) models are used to describe the within-storm variations of the level-one parameters that control the evolution of the rain fields. Calibration is performed using a generalized method-of-moments approach. The parametric bootstrap validation technique was used to evaluate the performance of the first two levels of the model by comparing the characteristics of interest for four observed storm events (typical of frontal and convective storms experienced in Sydney, Australia) and synthetic storms. It is found that this two-level rainfall model produces realistic sequences of rain images which capture the physical hierarchical structure of clusters, patchiness of rain fields and the persistence exhibited during storm development. A variety of important statistics were adequately reproduced at both 10-min and 1-hr time scales over space scales ranging from 1 km up to 32 km. Finally, application of this model to short-term rainfall forecasting is presented.

▼ Many physical quantities measured over time and space are often observed with data irregularities, such as truncation (detection limit) or censoring. Practitioners often disregard censored data cases which may result in inefficient estimates. On the other hand, censored data treated as observed values will lead to biased estimates. For instance, the data values collected by a monitoring device may have a specific detection limit and the device records the value with its limit, or a constant exceeding the limit value, when the real value exceeds the limit. We present an attractive remedy for handling censored or truncated data collected over time or space. Our method produces (asymptotically) unbiased estimates that are more efficient than the estimates based on treating censored observations as completely observed. In particular, we introduce an imputation method particularly well suited for fitting statistical models dealing with correlated observations in the presence of censored data. Our proposed imputation method involves generating random samples from the conditional distribution of the censored data given the (completely) observed data and current estimates of the parameters. The parameter estimates are then updated based on imputed and completely observed data until convergence. Under Gaussian processes, such a conditional distribution turns out to be a truncated multivariate normal distribution. We use a Gibbs sampling method to generate samples from such truncated multivariate normal distributions. We demonstrate the effectiveness of the technique for a problem common to many correlated data sets and describe its application to several other frequently encountered situations. First, we discuss the use of an imputation technique for a stationary time series data assuming an autoregressive moving average model. Then, we relax the model assumption and discuss how the imputation method works with a nonparametric estimation of a covariance matrix. The use of the imputation method is not limited to a time series model and can be applied to other types of correlated data such as a spatial data. A lattice model is discussed as another application field of the imputation method. For pedagogic purposes, our illustration of the approach based on a simulation study is limited to some simple models such as a first order autoregressive time series model, first order moving average time series model, and first order simultaneous autoregressive error model, with left or right censoring. However, the method can easily be extended to more complicated models. We also derive the Fisher information matrix for an AR(1) process containing censored observations and explain the effect of the censoring on the efficiency gain of the estimates using the trace of the Fisher Information matrix. Disertacijoje nagrinėjami Markovo grandinės Monte-Karlo (MCMC) adaptavimo metodai, skirti efektyviems skaitiniams duomenų analizės sprendimų priėmimo su iš anksto nustatytu patikimumu algoritmams sudaryti. Suformuluoti ir išspręsti hierarchiniu būdu sudarytų daugiamačių skirstinių (asimetrinio t skirstinio, Puasono-Gauso modelio, stabiliojo simetrinio vektoriaus dėsnio) parametrų vertinimo uždaviniai. Adaptuotai MCMC procedūrai sukurti yra pritaikytas nuoseklaus Monte-Karlo imčių generavimo metodas, įvedant statistinį stabdymo kriterijų ir imties tūrio reguliavimą. Statistiniai uždaviniai išspręsti šiuo metodu leidžia atskleisti aktualias MCMC metodų skaitmeninimo problemų ypatybes. MCMC algoritmų efektyvumas tiriamas pasinaudojant disertacijoje sudarytu statistinio modeliavimo metodu. Atlikti eksperimentai su sportininkų duomenimis ir sveikatos industrijai priklausančių įmonių finansiniais duomenimis patvirtino, kad metodo skaitinės savybės atitinka teorinį modelį. Taip pat sukurti metodai ir algoritmai pritaikyti sociologinių duomenų analizės modeliui sudaryti. Atlikti tyrimai parodė, kad adaptuotas MCMC algoritmas leidžia gauti nagrinėjamų skirstinių parametrų įvertinius per mažesnį grandžių skaičių ir maždaug du kartus sumažinti skaičiavimų apimtį. Disertacijoje sukonstruoti algoritmai gali būti pritaikyti stochastinio pobūdžio sistemų tyrimui ir kitiems statistikos uždaviniams spręsti MCMC metodu.

Markov chain Monte Carlo adaptive methods by creating computationally effective algorithms for decision-making of data analysis with the given accuracy are analyzed in this dissertation. The tasks for estimation of parameters of the multivariate distributions which are constructed in hierarchical way (skew t distribution, Poisson-Gaussian model, stable symmetric vector law) are described and solved in this research. To create the adaptive MCMC procedure, the sequential generating method is applied for Monte Carlo samples, introducing rules for statistical termination and for sample size regulation of Markov chains. Statistical tasks, solved by this method, reveal characteristics of relevant computational problems including MCMC method. Effectiveness of the MCMC algorithms is analyzed by statistical modeling method, constructed in the dissertation. Tests made with sportsmen data and financial data of enterprises, belonging to health-care industry, confirmed that numerical properties of the method correspond to the theoretical model. The methods and algorithms created also are applied to construct the model for sociological data analysis. Tests of algorithms have shown that adaptive MCMC algorithm allows to obtain estimators of examined distribution parameters in lower number of chains, and reducing the volume of calculations approximately two times. L'augmentation des concentrations de méthane dans l'atmosphère, directement imputable aux activités anthropiques, induit une accentuation de l'effet de serre et une dégradation de la qualité de l'air. Il existe encore à l'heure actuelle de grandes incertitudes concernant les estimations des émissions des dfférentes sources de méthane à l'échellelocale. Une meilleure caractérisation de ces sources permettrait de mettre en place des politiques d'adaptation et d'att énuation efficaces afin de réduire ces émissions. Nous avons développé une nouvelle méthode de quantificationdes émissions de méthane à l'échelle locale basée sur la combinaison de mesures atmosphériques mobiles et d'un modèle gaussien dans le cadre d'une inversion statistique. Les concentrations atmosphériques du méthane sont mesuréesainsi que celles d'un gaz traceur émis à un flux connu. Ces concentrations en gaz traceur sont utilisées pour sélectionnerla classe de stabilité représentant le mieux les conditions atmosphériques dans le modèle gaussien ainsi qu'à paramétrerl'erreur associée aux mesures et au modèle dans l'inversion statistique. Dans un premier temps, cette nouvelle méthoded'estimation des émissions de méthane a été testée grâce à des émissions contrôlées de traceur et de méthane dontles sources ont été positionnées suivant différentes configurations. J'ai ensuite appliqué cette méthode à deux sites réels connus pour leurs émissions de méthane, une exploitation agricole et une installation de distribution de gaz, afin de tester son applicabilité et sa robustesse dans des conditions plus complexes de répartition des sources de méthane. Cette méthode a permis d'obtenir des estimations des émissions totales des sites robustes prenant en compte la localisation du traceur par rapport aux sources de méthane. L'estimation séparéedes émissions des différentes sources d'un site s'est révélée fortement dépendante des conditions météorologiques durant les mesures. Je me suis ensuite focalisé sur les émissions de méthane associées au secteur des déchets en réalisant un certain nombre de campagnes de mesures au sein d'installations de stockagedes déchets non dangereux et de stations d'épuration. Les résultats obtenus pour ces différents sites montrent la grandevariabilité des émissions de méthane dans le secteur des déchets.

The increase of atmospheric methane concentrations since the beginning of the industrial era is directly linked to anthropogenic activities. This increase is partly responsible for the enhancement of the greenhouse effect leading to a rise of Earth's surface temperatures and a degradation of air quality. There are still considerable uncertainties regarding methane emissions estimates from many sources at local scale.
