model has attracted much attention from academia and industries alike. It implies many new opportunities for product innovatiopn to transend traditional boundaries and leaverage diverse capabilitied and resources by coherently integrating external partners into the design and manufacturing processes. Such trends lead to the decentralization of the product fulfillment process. Particularly, the open business
model offers the opportunities for the small and medium enterprises to fulfill various customer needs in an innovative crowdsourcing manner. While open design and manufacturing sounds appealing, research on formal formulation of crowdsourcing product fulfillment has been very limited. The underlying challenge for adoption and reversion of the open business strategy is the difficulty in justify the population dynamics of crowdsourcing. This thesis puts forward collaborative-crowdsourcing product fulfillment (C2PF) for open design and manufacturing. This work proposes a new product fulfillment workflow to accommodate the decentralized yet collaborative product fulfillment process. The research focus is geared towards the instantiation of the open design and manufacturing with a highly individualized dental braces fulfillment process as a case study. The thesis investigates the fundamental issues underpinning open design and manufacturing. A
game-
theoretic decision framework is proposed to deal with such critical issues as (1) group decision-making in the product fulfillment processes, (2) dynamics analysis of the external partners’ population, and (3) collaboration-negotiation contracting scheme based on an information contents measure. Since the boundaries are opened to the external partners, the product fulfillment decision-making processes must be reengineered to adapt the collaborative-crowdsourcing process. The workflow of C2PF is established. The supply contracting mechanism is identified as the key pillars to support the product fulfillment flow. In addition, to
model the population dynamics of the partners, an evolutionary competition-cooperation
game theoretic model is established. The relationships among participation fraction of the partners, the balance of inter-domain capacity, and income and distribution have been established. It reveals a competition-cooperation relationship between the external partners and a co-evolutionary characteristic of the entire population. This
model provides a guideline for the management of the open enterprise, with considering of the long-time prosperity. Moreover, to achieve the collaborative crowdsourcing, a generalized supply contracting evaluation mechanism has been proposed. This mechanism supports the collaborative-negotiation from the bidding perspective. The evaluation mechanism handles the uncertainty, aggregates multi-criteria evaluation results and ensures the satisfaction of the requirements. ▼ Revenue Management (RM) is the practice of managing perishable assets by control-ling their availability and/or prices with an objective to maximize the total revenue. Seat inventory allocation falls in the purview of quantity-based RM. The liberalization of the aviation sector and the subsequent entrance of the low-cost carriers saw an ever-increasing customer base for the airline industry. Given the large number of buyers, firms were free to decide the price at which they would sell tickets. The low-cost carriers started to follow a third degree price discrimination and segmentation of the market, charging a higher price to the market with a relatively inelastic demand.
Although a lot of work has been done in the area of seat inventory allocation under a monopolistic market scenario, we realized that not a lot of work had been done in a competitive market scenario. This thesis considers the problem of seat inventory allocation and pricing in a duopoly where each of the competing airlines have two fare-classes. We consider the possibility that the same fare-class may be priced differently by the two competing airlines and allow for the over flow of passengers between the airlines in the same fare-class. In the first part of our work, we develop a non-linear mathematical
model for setting the booking limits for one of the two competing air-lines such that the revenue earned is maximized. We consider over flow of passengers from one airline to another in the same fare-class in response to a price differential and compare the results obtained from our
model with the standard Expected Marginal Seat Revenue (EMSR)
model under a monopolistic scenario. The results show that our
model gives higher revenues than that obtained from the EMSR
model.
In the second part of our work, we consider a non-cooperative
game between two competing airlines with price cutting as the strategy to increase their demand. Through numerical computations, we identify the pure strategy Nash equilibrium. From the results, we conclude that Nash equilibrium is achieved only when both the airlines follow the same pricing strategy indicating that individual price cutting will not be beneficial. This also indicates that unless the competitors enter into a cooperative coalition with each other, they would not benefit from deep discount offers.
In the third and final part, we prove theoretically the existence of pure strategy Nash equilibrium in a two airline, two fare-class problem with price sensitive over flow of customers in the same fare-class that was computationally analysed earlier. The strategy / strategies at which Nash equilibrium is achieved are identified. We show that Nash equilibrium is only achieved when both the airlines price identically. Hence, our thesis concludes that differential pricing does not hold any significance for the competing airlines from an operational perspective.

▼ With increasing demand for social network based activities, it is very important to understand not only the structural properties of social networks but also how social networks form, to better exploit their promise and potential. We believe the existing methods and tools for social network analysis have a major inadequacy: they do not capture the behavior (such as rationality and intelligence) of individuals nor do they
model the strategic interactions that occur among these individuals.
Game theory is a natural tool to overcome this inadequacy since it provides rigorous mathematical models of strategic interaction among autonomous, intelligent, and rational agents. This thesis brings out how a
game theoretic approach helps analyze social networks better. In particular, we study three contemporary and pertinent problems in social networks using a
game theoretic approach: determining influential individuals for viral marketing, community detection, and social network formation.
The first problem deals with determining influential nodes in social networks for diffusion of information. We present an efficient heuristic algorithm (SPIN) to this problem based on cooperative
game theoretic techniques. The running time of SPIN is independent of the number of influential nodes to be determined. Moreover, unlike the popular benchmark algorithms, the proposed method works well with both submodular and non-submodular objective functions for diffusion of information.
In the second problem, we design a novel
game theoretic approach to partition a given undirected, unweighted graph into dense subgraphs (or communities). The approach is based on determining a Nash stable partition which is a pure strategy Nash equilibrium of an appropriately defined strategic form
game. In the proposed graph partitioning
game, the nodes of the graph are the players and the strategy of a node is to decide to which community it ought to belong. The utility of each node is defined to depend entirely on the node’s local neighborhood. A Nash stable partition (NSP) of this
game is a partition consisting of communities such that no node has incentive to defect from its community to any other community. Given any graph, we prove that an NSP always exists and we also derive a lower bound on the fraction of intra-community edges in any NSP. Our approach leads to an efficient heuristic algorithm to detect communities in social networks with the additional feature of automatically determining the number of communities.
The focus of the third problem is to understand the patterns behind the evolution of social networks that helps in predicting the likely topologies of social networks. The topology of social networks plays a crucial role in determining the outcomes in several social and economic situations such as trading networks, recommendation networks. We approach the problem of topology prediction in networks by defining a
game theoretic model, which we call value function -allocation rule
model, that considers four determinants of network formation.…

▼ Global warming is currently a major challenge facing the world. There are widespread ongoing efforts in the form of summits, conferences, etc., to find satisfactory ways of surmounting this challenge. The basic objective of all such efforts can be summarized as conception and formation of protocols to reduce the pace of global carbon levels.
Game theory and mechanism design provide a natural modeling tool for capturing the strategic dynamics involved in global warming related problems. This dissertation explores for the first time the use of voting mechanisms in the context of solving the central problems, namely, allocation of emission caps and reduction quotas to strategic emitting agents (countries).
The contribution of this dissertation is two-fold. The first contribution is to develop an elegant
game theoretic model that accurately captures the strategic interactions among different emitting agents in a global warming setting. This
model facilitates a convenient way of exploring a mechanism design approach for solving important allocation problems in the global warming context. The second contribution is to propose and explore a novel approach, based on voting mechanisms, to solve two problems: (1) allocating emission caps and (2) allocating reduction quotas to strategic agents.
Our work investigates the use of voting mechanisms that satisfy four desirable properties:
(1) non-dictatorship, (2) strategy-proofness, (3) efficiency, and (4) anonymity. In particular, we explore the median selection, maximum order statistic selection, and general Kth order statistic selection voting mechanisms. Our results clearly show that only trivial allocations satisfy all the above properties simultaneously. We next investigate the use of voting mechanisms for the dual problem, namely, allocation of emission reductions to emitting agents. Here, we show that non-trivial allocations are possible, however an important property, individual rationality, might be compromised.
The investigations in the thesis bring out certain limitations in applying voting mechanisms that satisfy all the four properties above. Nevertheless, the insights obtained provide valuable guidelines for solving emission allocation related problems in a principled and informed way.

▼ Problem:
The problem under consideration is the World Trade Organization’s (WTO) agreement called Trade-Related Aspects of Intellectual Property Rights (TRIPS) and its impact on equal access to essential drugs in the least developed countries. Especially the countries of sub-Saharan Africa lack such access. Moreover, these countries are the ones where severe diseases like AIDS/HIV, tuberculosis and malaria are widely spread over the population. The authors focus also on patents and their obligatory length imposed through the articles of TRIPS agreement.
Purpose:
The purpose of the thesis is to describe and analyse the impact of global trade regulations (TRIPS in particular) on the accessibility of essential drugs in developing countries, and to come up with a possible solution as the way of coping with the problem is concerned. The investigation includes detailed description of solutions accomplished by Brazil and India, and their importance for the least developed countries, in terms of importing generic pharmaceuticals from these.
Method:
Qualitative method was used in order to obtain data from interviews with citizens of Botswana, Ghana, Ethiopia and South Africa for better understanding of the situation in these countries. Furthermore, the theories included in the theoretical background of this paper were gathered through deep research in the field of studies regarding Intellectual Property protection and World Trade Organization’s agreements and other legal acts.
Results:
The result of the analysis is a model developed from the Game-Theoretic Model, and called Developed Game-Theoretic Model. It is a tool which the least developed countries can use while negotiating prices of medicines with pharmaceutical companies, having the possibility of importing the pharmaceuticals from other countries manufacturing the patented product under compulsory licensing.

▼ In this dissertation, two questions concerning monetary policy under the Taylor rule have been addressed. The first question is on, under the Taylor rule, whether a central bank should be responsible for both bank supervision and monetary policy or whether the two tasks should be exercised by separate institutions. This is the main focus of Chapter I. The second question is on whether the Taylor rule plays an important role in explaining modern business cycles in the United States. The second question has been covered by Chapter II.
The implications of the first chapter can be summarized as follows: (i) it is inevitable for the central bank to have a systematic error in conducting monetary policy when the central bank does not have a bank supervisory role; (ii) without a bank supervisory role, the effectiveness of monetary policy cannot be guaranteed; (iii) because of the existence of conflict of interests, giving a bank supervisory role to the central bank does not guarantee the effectiveness of monetary policy, either; (iv) the way of setting up another government agency, bank regulator, and making the central bank and the regulator cooperate each other does not guarantee the effectiveness of monetary policy because, in this way, the systematic error in conducting monetary policy cannot be eliminated; (v) in the view of social welfare, not in the view of the effectiveness of monetary policy, it is better for the central bank to keep the whole responsibility or at least a partial responsibility on bank supervision.
In the second chapter, we examined the effect of a technology shock and a money shock in the context of an RBC
model incorporating the Taylor rule as the Fed??s monetary policy. One thing significantly different from other researches on this topic is the way the Taylor rule is introduced in the
model. In this chapter, the Taylor rule is introduced by considering the relationship among the Fisher equation, Euler equation and the Taylor rule explicitly in the dynamic system of the relevant RBC
model. With this approach, it has been shown that, even in a flexible-price environment, the two major failures in RBC models with money can be resolved. Under the Taylor rule, the correlation between output and inflation appears to be positive and the response of our
model economy to a shock is persistent. Furthermore, the possibility of an existing liquidity effect is found. These results imply that the Taylor rule does play a key role in explaining business cycles in the United States.

▼ Feedstock-based renewable fuels, and ecosystem restoration practices such as afforestation are long-term solutions to mitigating greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. This dissertation aligns with assessing the effects of policy supports and voluntary incentive programs on renewable fuel production and forest-based carbon sequestration.Higher investment risks and novelty of the feedstock-based conversion technologies hinder large-scale deployment of renewable fuels at present. In the first essay, a two-stage stochastic model is employed to evaluate the impact of federal subsidies in designing a switchgrass-based bioethanol supply chain in west Tennessee wherein decisions driven by minimized expected and Conditional Value-at-Risk of system cost reflected the risk-neutral and risk-averse perspective of the biofuel sector, respectively. Major contribution of this study is the impact assessment of Biomass Crop Assistance Program (BCAP) on investment decisions (including land allocation) of a risk-sensitive biofuel industry under feedstock supply uncertainty.In the second essay, impacts of renewable jet fuel (RJF) production from switchgrass on farmland allocation, processing facility configuration, and GHG emissions are estimated in response to fulfilling the RJF demand at the Memphis International Airport in Tennessee. Importantly, a potential carbon market is used to explore the impact of hypothetical carbon credits on the GHG emissions reduction and net supply-chain welfare while addressing the economic motives of the supply-chain participants. Considering the attention paid by the Unites States aviation sector with respect to GHG emissions, this study highlights the importance of Renewable Identification Number (RIN) credits and tradable carbon credits in achieving the desired economic viability and emission abatement goals through a Stackelberg interaction between the feedstock suppliers and the feedstock processor.In the third essay, discriminatory-price auction and agent-based model are used to examine the cost-efficiency of cost-ranked and cost-benefit-ranked auction-based payment designs for forest-based carbon sequestration with varying degree of correlation between opportunity costs of afforestation and carbon sequestration capacities, when bidders learn in multi-round procurement auctions. Simulation outcomes are expected to guide decision makers in choosing an optimal payment design that ensures efficiency gains for auction-based payments compared to fixed-rate payments, and more importantly ensures minimal loss in cost-efficiency in a dynamic setting.

▼ We propose a novel analytic approach for the comparative statics analysis of
operations management problems on the capacity investment decision and the
influenza (flu) vaccine composition decision. Our approach involves exploiting
the properties of the underlying mathematical models, and linking those
properties to the concept of stochastic orders relationship. The use of
stochastic orders allows us to establish our main results without restriction
to a specific distribution. A major strength of our approach is that it is
"scalable," i.e., it applies to capacity investment decision problem with any
number of â non-independentâ (i.e., demand or resource sharing) products and
resources, and to the influenza vaccine composition problem with any number of
candidate strains, without a corresponding increase in computational effort.
This is unlike the current approaches commonly used in the operations
management literature, which typically involve a parametric analysis followed
by the use of the implicit function theorem. Providing a rigorous framework
for comparative statics analysis, which can be applied to other problems that
are not amenable to traditional parametric analysis, is our main contribution.
We demonstrate this approach on two problems: (1) Capacity investment
decision, and (2) influenza vaccine composition decision. A comparative
statics analysis is integral to the study of these problems, as it allows
answers to important questions such as, "does the firm acquire more or less
of the different resources available as demand uncertainty increases? does the
firm benefit from an increase in demand uncertainty? how does the vaccine
composition change as the yield uncertainty increases?" Using our proposed
approach, we establish comparative statics results on how the newsvendor's
expected profit and optimal capacity decision change with demand risk and
demand dependence in multi-product multi-resource newsvendor networks; and how
the societal vaccination benefit, the manufacturer's profit, and the vaccine
output change with the risk of random yield of strains.
