▼ The provision of high quality nursing care to the dying has become a significant concern in the United States (Kruse, Melhado, Convertine & Stecher, 2008). The goal of palliative care is to provide care that allows for optimal quality of life for patients and their families (Betcher, 20 10; Mcllfatrick, Mawhinney, & Gilmour, 2010). The recognition of valuable and underutilized zed end-of-life nursing skills may provide guidance for the development of interventions to improve nurses' roles in caring for dying patients and their family members (Reinke et al., 2010). The American Association of the Colleges of Nursing (AACN. 2002) has established a list of fifteen core competencies essential in the provision of high quality nursing care to patients and their families during the end-of-life transition period. This project describes an educational intervention focused on nurses working in hospice and palliative care. The educational intervention was delivered in a lecture sty le format utilizing handouts and discussions to augment understanding. The goal of this project was to enhance the level of perceived competency. in nurses caring for patients in the end-of-life care setting, which generally includes hospice and palliative care. The theoretical foundation for this project was based on Therese "The Careful Nursing Model." The link between this project and this model's theory lies in the understanding that the given areas of care should not be a part of w hat nurses do, but should actually be hemmed by their caring both in action and in belief. This study was a pre-test, posttest quasi-experimental design as randomization was not possible mainly due to the small sample size. Subjects then participated in an educational session composed of Iecture with discussion and handouts based on the TNEEL curriculum designed by the Cancer Pain and Symptom Management Nursing Research Group (20 11) to facilitate learners in meeting the AACN competencies recommended to provide quality care for hospice patients. Finally. subjects completed the Post Intervention Assessment: Perceptions on End-of-Life Care Questionnaire immediately after the fin al education session and again 30 days post education intervention. The overall questionnaire responses were analyzed for each item. Each item score was then totaled. averaged, and compared to determine ne mean differences for each stage of the questionnaire and statistical significance. Though improvement in mean scores was noted between the first and second administration of the questionnaire, the improvement was not statistically significant (p > .623). There is a statistically significant improvement in mean scores between the second and third administration of the questionnaire (p = .00 I). When the combined mean scores for the five lowest scoring items (used to design the educational intervention) on the questionnaire were compared, no statistically significant differences were noted between the first and second, first and third or second and third questionnaire administrations. ▼ The gap between demand and supply of blood is continuously widening as the population increases. This is of great concern in Kenya where blood donation figures are below the World Health Organization‟s recommendations. A random cross-sectional survey involving 224 respondents was conducted in and around Nairobi. The objective of this study was to elicit donor information needs to enable the improvement of donor recruitment and retention strategies through the use of ICT based tools. 63.8% of respondents had never donated blood and only 4.9% were regular donors. Only 19 of the 81 donors had been contacted by the Kenya National blood Transfusion Service. 71.4 % of all respondents indicated that receiving SMS and emails with information on blood donation dates and venues would be quite useful, while 79% would welcome educative information on blood donation.70.1% of respondents suggested that increased awareness on donation dates and venues and increased donor education would improve donor participation. This survey identified information gaps present in the current National Blood Transfusion Service systems and in Kenya in general. There is very little use of ICTs to help improve blood donor participation. This research project aimed at not only identifying these gaps but also creating ICT based ways of filling in these gaps. A donor information needs oriented prototype system was therefore designed and developed. It was then tested with the aim of finding out if it was meeting the identified donor information needs. 85% of the respondents of this test strongly agreed that they appreciate receiving a donor registration confirmation and a thank you note via SMS immediately after donation. 75% of the respondents indicated they very much welcomed receiving SMS notifications with useful information on when and where to collect their donor card and blood test results. While over 70% of the participants indicated that they found SMS messages with donation dates and venues and educative information useful and motivating. 55% strongly agree that the probability that they are more likely to donate after receiving the donation notifications and educative information is high. Based on these test results, the registered donors appreciate receiving notifications and educative SMS messages through this system and are now more likely to attend donation drives and donate and share the knowledge they receive with friends and family

▼ Ruminant utilisation of poor quality feeds is governed by rates of degradation and passage through the rumen. Firstly, the passage rate of feed material determines the degree of bypass nutrients and the efficiency of synthesis of microbial protein in the rumen, making modelling of passage rate important. Secondly, diurnal feeding behaviours are not normally used in predicting feed intake although their influences are vital in understanding the dynamics of intake. Lastly, critical to rumen kinetics studies lies in understanding the dynamics of rumen fill levels post meal termination. The objectives of the study were to: (1) develop digesta passage rate prediction models for climatically, nutritionally and genetically diverse classes of ruminant herbivores; (2) ascertain the effects of diet quality on diurnal feeding behaviour in sheep and goats; and (3) determine the influence of diet quality on passage rates and, the extent and trend of solid digesta disappearance after meal termination. Artificial neural networks were used to develop prediction models for liquid and solid passage rates. Studies that reported fractional passage rates, class and body mass of ruminants were included in the dataset. Factors that affect rates of passage included animal and feed factors. The database was composed of observations of domestic and wild ruminants of variable body mass (1.5 to 1238 kg) from 74 studies and 17 ruminant species from different climatic regions. Observations were randomly divided into 2 data subsets: 75% for training and 25% for validation. Developed models accounted for 66 and 82% of the variation in prediction of passage rates for solid and liquid, respectively. On validation using an independent dataset, these models attained 42 and 64% of precision in predicting passage rates for solid and liquid, respectively. The effects of tropical roughage and diet quality on dry matter intake, duration and number of daytime and night time eating bouts, idling sessions and ruminating activities in small ruminants were investigated. Roughage quality was improved by urea treatment of veld hay, while diet quality was improved by supplementing with lucerne hay, sunflower meal, lespedeza, fish meal and sunflower meal. Day-time (0600-1800 h) and night time (1800-0600 h) feeding behaviour activities of sheep and goats were recorded. Generally, roughage and diet quality, and time of the day had significant effects on time spent ruminating and eating. Intake rates (g/bout and g/min) were not affected by diet and roughage qualities. Generally, goats and sheep fed on roughage alone ruminate at night and eat more during the day but those fed roughage and supplemented with lucerne hay spent more time ruminating than eating. Time spent eating and ruminating had positive correlations to feed intake. Intake rates (g/min and g/bout) had strong positive correlations to intake, which were significant. L’indemnisation du patient victime de soins repose d’une part sur le choix de la procédure adéquate et d’autre part sur la recherche de l’origine du dommage. L’expertise apportera les éléments nécessaires à la compréhension de la survenance du dommage. La faute peut revêtir plusieurs contours, mais celle-ci n’est pas exclusive de la possibilité d’indemnisation. Le législateur apporte une facilitation de l’action en indemnisation, par la mise en place de nouvelles instances. Une alternative est ainsi proposée sans pour autant se substituer aux juridictions. Des critères de recevabilité pour l’entrée dans le nouveau dispositif sont prévus, ainsi qu’une possible prise en charge par la solidarité nationale en cas d’accident médical non fautif ou infections nosocomiales graves. Par ailleurs certains dommages comme ceux qui sont liés à des contaminations transfusionnelles, vaccinations obligatoires ou d’autres encore prévus par le législateur seront pris en charge sans conditions de gravité. Il s’agit d’un dispositif évolutif en écoute avec les attentes d’une société. Au terme de plus de dix ans d’application de la loi du 4 Mars 2002, il convient de dresser un bilan certes perfectible, mais largement positif.

Compensation for victims of patient care depends partly on the choice of the proper procedure and secondly on finding the cause of the damage. The expertise will provide the necessary components for the understanding of the occurrence of the damage. The fault may take differents shapes, but this does not exclude the possibility of compensation. The legislator helps the compensation of the damages by establishing new faculties. An alternative is offered without replacing the courts. The eligibility criteria for entry into the new device are provided, as well as possible support by national solidarity in the event of a grave non-fault accident or a nosocomial infection. In addition, some damage as those by transfusion-related infections, mandatory vaccinations or others defined by the legislator are supported regarless of the gravity. It is an evolutionary device which listens to the expections of the society. After more than ten years of enforcement of the law of 4 March 2002, its balance sheet is largely positive.

This study explores the representation of the undocumented migrant in the contemporary Latin American novel. Clandestine crossings have long been a theme in Mexican and Chicano literature, often narrated from a highly nationalistic working-class stance, but it is here argued that recent literary production on this problematic is significantly more heterogeneous. The aim of the present work is to examine, compare and systematize the configuration of the migrant subject in a corpus of eight novels published in the 1990s and the 2000s, which focus on the current phenomenon of unauthorized Latin American migration to the United States. The study’s main concern is to scrutinize how this subject is depicted and how the different elements that comprise the affiliated identity formation suffer from transformation as the rendered characters move from one cultural setting to another. In order to achieve this, a second aim in effect becomes to inductively establish a methodology for the narrative study of the shaping of the migrant subject in and by movement as such. Drawing on the decentering of the human subject as well as positional, relational and intersectional approaches to identity in recent postcolonial and feminist theory, a model is elaborated for the study of the geographic figurations of identity and subjectivity in the novels according to four analytic stages of the process of migration: the anticipatory moment in the South; the crossings of material and metaphorical borders; the intercultural contact with the North; and the contrast between the experiences of migration and the mnemonic processes linked by close bonds to the homeland. The ensuing analyses demonstrate that there is not one migrant subject represented in the texts, but a plurality of different subjects that acquire coherence and historical continuity by being inserted into the metanarrative of the Promised Land. Situated in a dialogic exchange between continuity and change, three main directions crystallize among the novels: the tendency of a return to roots, the tendency of a rupture with the past, and the exaltation of hybridity. The stress of the material aspect of the border and the subjective accounts of the human consequences of the undocumented condition as an extended liminal position are identified as the main constituents of this literature. A tension between pro-immigrant sympathies and a ludic sensibility toward stereotyped representations of Hispanics and Anglo Americans is also displayed.

O principal objetivo do presente estudo é a análise da intertextualidade do livro Poema dos Poemas, de Cecília Meireles, com a Bíblia Sagrada, mais especificamente com o Livro dos Salmos. A intertextualidade com os Salmos se faz presente em todos os vinte e um poemas do livro. A citação, o mecanismo intertextual ao qual a análise se atém, por vezes reproduz ou mesmo inverte o sentido da palavra bíblica incorporada. Na obra, dividida em três partes de sete poemas cada uma, o sujeito lírico caminha do profano para o sagrado por meio de ritos de passagem. A primeira parte principia pela fascinação, ansiedade, grande alegria, esperança, dúvida, ternura e tristeza. A segunda parte começa com uma nova onda de tristeza, desenganos, despedida, súplica, lágrimas, perdão e bênçãos. O sujeito lírico adentra a terceira parte com mais fôlego, começa pela solidão, condição indispensável para o neófito que se propõe a fazer o ritual, daí parte para a saudade. A dor se insere como forte participante deste rito de passagem. A renúncia, o desprender-se das coisas terreais, na qual se insere o doar-se, prenuncia o descenso, desempenha seu papel inalienável para chegar à humildade, cuja função é a depuração do iniciado. Ao encontrar a sabedoria, o sonho do sujeito lírico se encerra.

The main purpose of the current study is the analysis of the intertextuality between the book Poema dos Poemas, of Cecília Meireles, with the Bible, more specifically with the Book of Psalms. The intertextuality is present in all the twenty one poems of the book. The citation, the intertextual mechanism of analyses used, sometimes reproduces or even inverts the meaning of the biblical words. The literary peace is divided in three parts of seven poems each one, the lyric subject walks from the profane to the sacred throw the ritual of passage. The first part starts with fascination, anxiety, great joy, hope, tenderness and sadness. The second part starts with a new wave of sadness, disillusion, farewell, supplication, tears, pardon and blesses. The lyric subject arrives in the third part with more desire, starts with loneliness, indispensable condition for the neophyte that pretends to do the passage, from there to the compliment. The pain is inserted as strong part of the ritual. The renouncement, the indifference of the things from earth, in which it is, inserted the donation; the previous announce of the descents, to play his inalienable role to arrive at humility, that function is a depuration of the neophyte. When he meets the wisdom, the dream of the lyric subject ends.

▼ This thesis investigates the Commission pour la Protections des Indigènes [Commission for the Protection of the Natives, 1908-1957], a largely overlooked colonial advice and ‘watch dog’ organ in the Belgian Congo (1908-1960). It is seen as a formal institution, acting as an intermediary between the Congolese population and the Belgian colonisers; between colonial practitioners on the ground and officials; and between the Congo and Belgium. It is also considered as an informal network, bringing together authoritative colonial practitioners with extensive on the ground experience, including missionaries, administrators, and magistrates. The Commission and the Commissioners are used to analyse the conceptions, attitudes, and ideas which underpinned Belgian colonial governance and their interrelationship with policy and practice. It covers the period between 1908 and 1957 and touches upon various ‘native policy’ issues. It embeds the Commission and Belgian colonialism within the framework of twentieth century colonial governance in Central and East Africa. This thesis firstly challenges conceptions that Belgian colonial governance was devoid of reflection and that ideas and assumptions were static and based on consensus, reflecting smooth relationships among colonials. It uncovers complex debates and relates these to the various colonial projects behind ‘the colonial project’ and their basis in conflict-ridden collaborations. This thesis secondly argues against conceptions that Belgian colonial governance was exceptional. It points to similarities and differences with British and French rule and pinpoints the distinctiveness of the Belgian approach. Finally, it undermines teleological explanations of the shortcomings of Belgian colonial governance by pointing to a vicious cycle of biases, confusion, and conflict. Fitting in with a growing body of empirical scholarship focusing on the period between the heavily studied Leopoldian rule and decolonisation, this thesis uses the Commission to shed new light on the intellectual foundations of Belgian colonial governance and re-evaluates its Belgian nature and effectiveness.

L'utilisation de faisceaux d’ions (protons ou ions légers) permet d'obtenir, lors du traitement, un dépôt d'énergie localisé en fin de parcours dans une zone réduite de l'espace. Les cibles privilégiées pour cette thérapie sont les tumeurs « radiorésistantes » ou les traitements nécessitant une balistique très précise, du fait de la présence d'organes à risques à proximité de la tumeur. Cependant, comme la détermination du parcours des ions et donc de la dose délivrée est dépendante de grandeurs qui restent difficiles à mesurer précisément, d’importantes marges de sécurité doivent être prises lors de la conception du plan de traitement. En conséquence, il est nécessaire de mettre en place un système performant de contrôle balistique afin de garantir la qualité du traitement. Une des possibilités pour le contrôle balistique repose sur la mesure en temps réel de la distribution spatiale des radionucléides émetteurs de positons produits par réaction de fragmentation entre le projectile et la cible et donc sur la détection en coïncidence de deux photons. Pour cela, un premier prototype appelé Détecteur Pixélisé de Grande Acceptance (DPGA) a été conçu puis construit au sein du laboratoire de Physique de Clermont. Dans un premier temps, ce travail a permis de comparer les prédictions de deux modèles hadroniques implémentés dans Geant4 aux mesures expérimentales effectuées par une autre équipe (Dendooven et al.) à 55 MeV. Ensuite, nous nous sommes attachés à caractériser les performances du DPGA et à déterminer son potentiel lors de son utilisation en faisceau clinique. Pour cela nous avons développé une simulation Monte-Carlo dédiée permettant de comprendre la physique associée, le détecteur et les expériences effectuées sur faisceau de protons 65 MeV à l’Institut méditerranéen de Protonthérapie (IMPT) de Nice. Enfin, comme le DPGA sera à terme couplé avec un système d’acquisition à grande bande passante (μTCA) autorisant l’envoi et le traitement des données mesurées en temps réel, nous avons fait une étude des performances attendues sur la ligne PROTEUS ONE de l'IMPT à 120 et 230 MeV.

The use of ion beams (protons or light ions) makes it possible to obtain, during treatment, a localised energy deposit at the end of the treatment in a small area of space. The preferred targets for this therapy are "radioresistant" tumours or treatments requiring very precise ballistics, due to the presence of high-risk organs close to the tumour. However, as the determination of the ion path and thus the delivered dose is dependent on quantities that are difficult to measure precisely, large safety margins must be taken into account when designing the treatment plan. Por meio deste trabalho, inserido na área de Estudos Comparados de Literaturas de Língua Portuguesa, objetivou-se estudar o modo como a Literatura para Juventude representa a passagem da adolescência para a idade adulta, tendo em vista a contribuição que os textos literários podem prestar para o processo de formação da subjetividade dos jovens, seja de modo realístico ou simbólico. Em termos de referencial teórico, trabalhou-se com o pensamento de diversos estudiosos da Psicologia do Desenvolvimento, tanto daqueles cujos trabalhos ativeram-se à investigação do ego, quanto dos que foram além e professaram teorias a respeito do self e do processo de individuação. No sentido de demonstrar a validade do mito do herói como estrutura narrativa simbólica do adultescer, empreendeu-se estudo comparativo de O relógio do mundo, do autor brasileiro Lino de Albergaria, com Aventuras de João Sem Medo: panfleto mágico em forma de romance, de José Gomes Ferreira, obra clássica da Literatura Portuguesa. Por meio da análise dos textos, construídos com base nas invariantes do conto maravilhoso, procurou-se demonstrar que, do ponto de vista da natureza psíquica, a conquista da maturidade é processo universal e atemporal, porém, o modo desta expressar-se no mundo está diretamente ligado com a cultura de cada lugar e época.

Placed within the field of Comparative Studies on Literature Written in Portuguese, this work has studied how youth literature can represent the passage from adolescence to adulthood, considering the contribution that literary texts may give to the formative process of a youths subjectivity, be it through realism or symbolism. Regarding its theoretical background, the research relies on the ideas of several authors from the field of Developmental Psychology, both those whose works concentrated on investigating the ego, and those who took a further step towards theorizing on the self and the individuation process. For the purpose of demonstrating how the myth of the hero serves as narrative structure to the process of adulting, a comparative study has been undertaken between O relógio do mundo, by the Brazilian author Lino de Albergaria, and Aventuras de João Sem Medo: panfleto mágico em forma de romance, a classic work from Portuguese literature by José Gomes Ferreira. Such works, built upon invariable elements of the marvelous structure, reveal that reaching maturity, in terms of its psychic nature, is a universal and timeless process, nonetheless, the way it is expressed in the world is directly connected to the culture of each specific time and place.

▼ In the developed economies, one of the driving forces behind tax reforms was the concern that many large corporations, indeed many industries were not paying their “fair” share of taxes. These were fired by the many studies showing that many large corporations paid little or no tax; studies pounced on by the media and politicians to agitate for tax reforms. Concern with equity in taxations as well as tax planning is important since they affect location decisions of firms and the flow of Foreign Direct Investment (FDI). Regulators also find this important in making taxation policies that ensure that balanced economic goals of the country are met. The purpose of the study was to establish the relationship between Effective Tax Rates and selected corporate characteristics (namely, size, capital structure, asset mix and firm performance). This was an analytical study which used panel data to measure. Thus the study adopted a time series or longitudinal approach, supplemented by cross-sectional comparisons. In this paper, we used data for the 38 companies listed on the Nairobi Stock Exchange (NSE) for the period (2005-2009). Effective tax rates were then correlated to firm size in order to test the size effect. Sensitivity analysis using OLS regression was also performed. The study concludes that firm size, leverage of the company, capital intensity and return on total assets influences the effective tax rates. However the study deduced that leverage negatively influenced the effective tax rates. The managers of the companies should concentrate their efforts towards allocating more funds to the expansion of the firm size as larger firms do possess superior economic and political power relative to smaller firms and are able to reduce their tax burdens. The companies should rely more on equity based financing to support its business operations other than relying more heavily on debt financing. The study also recommends that since it was established that firms that are more capital-intensive are expected to have lower ETRs, the companies should strive to ensure that they are more capital-intensive and less inventory- intensive.

ENGLISH ABSTRACT: I describe the structure of an addiction treatment programme called the discipleship programme and the logic of Christian restoration which informed the programme. The Ark: City of refuge is a homeless shelter located between Mfuleni and the N2, but also houses New Jerusalem which runs the discipleship programme. I conducted participant observation and semi-structured interviews at New Jerusalem between April 2016 and February 2017. I argue that the logic of Christian restoration was characterised by a belief in the possibility of a broken person being restored to the person who they were before they became a broken person. This was achieved through the discipleship programme which provided the student with discipline so that he/she may become a disciplined follower of Jesus Christ, in order to not become a broken person again. I also highlight how Christian restoration was informed not only by Christian discourse, but by a discourse concerned with who the student was as a person coming from a particular social context.

AFRIKAANSE OPSOMMING: Ek beskryf die struktuur van ’n verslawingsbehandelingsprogram wat as die dissipelskapprogram bekend staan, asook die logika van Christelike herstel wat die program ingelig het. Die Ark: City of Refuge is ’n skuiling vir hawelose persone geleë tussen Mfuleni en die N2, maar huisves ook New Jerusalem, wat die dissipelskapprogram bestuur. Ek het tussen April 2016 en Februarie 2017 deelnemerwaarneming en semigestruktureerde onderhoude by New Jerusalem gedoen. Ek redeneer dat die logika van Christelike herstel gekenmerk word deur ’n geloof in die moontlikheid dat ’n gebroke persoon herstel kan word tot die mens wat hy of sy was voor hy of sy ’n gebroke persoon geword het. Dit word bereik deur die dissipelskapprogram wat die student met die dissipline toerus om hom of haar ’n gedissiplineerde volgeling van Jesus Christus te maak, ten einde nie weer na ’n gebroke persoon terug te keer nie. Ek beklemtoon ook die feit dat Christelike herstel nie alleen deur die Christelike diskoers ingelig word nie, maar ook deur ’n diskoers oor wie die student is as ’n persoon wat uit ’n bepaalde sosiale konteks kom.
