▼ In May 1946, the Deutsche Film Aktiengesellschaft (DEFA) was charged with the singular task of re-educating the German people through film. The group that was deemed particularly important in this endeavour was ‘the youth’. With the foundation of the German Democratic Republic in 1949, DEFA became the state’s monopoly film studio, and the youth remained of particular importance to the state’s governing party, the SED. This thesis investigates the relationship between East German cinema, young people and the state. It is my contention that this relationship was neither as mechanistic nor as unidirectional as the state’s governing party, the Socialist Unity Party (SED), would have liked. Rather, through a close reading of selected DEFA ‘youth films’ made between the mid-1950s and the opening of the Berlin Wall in 1989, this thesis argues that East German cinema served a crucial role in mediating between the party and its young citizens. This thesis is principally concerned with illuminating the divergent discourses on youth culture and policy that emerged during the GDR’s forty-year history and that have often been obscured in histories that adopt a strictly ‘top down’ and monolithic view of East Germany. It takes as its focus films that were produced in periods of relative liberalisation, during which those divergent discourses, both from within and without the party, were most prominent. Chapters are organised chronologically as well as thematically. Focusing temporally on the ‘Thaw’ of the 1950s, the brief but remarkable period of attempted reform in the early 1960s, and the glasnost period of the latter 1980s, the chapters address the themes of consumerism, pedagogy and sexuality, respectively. This thesis reads DEFA’s youth films in the context of contemporary debates concerning youth culture and policy in the GDR. It addresses the question of how DEFA’s filmmakers contributed to these debates through East Germany’s official cinema. Integral to this is the question of where DEFA’s young protagonists should be historically situated in relation to both prescriptive and descriptive discourses on contemporary socialist society. By spanning a forty-year period, it is possible to discern how such factors as generational change and international developments in youth popular culture, as well as domestic and diplomatic policy shifts, affected daily life – and its cinematic representation – in what has sometimes been perceived as a ‘de-differentiated’ and ‘shut-down’ society.

▼ Covert repression, while crucial for retaining control in authoritarian regimes, remains an understudied topic due to data limitations. This thesis uses an original dataset containing detailed information from a sample of almost 300 informants to the German Democratic Republic’s Ministry for State Security (Stasi) to shed light on the way in which an authoritarian system can use, enroll, and retain its informants. Chapter 1 considers the way in which the GDR used its informants to counter the effects of a destabilizing process. I conceptualize regime’s recruitment of collaborators in terms of market interactions, where the society supplies the potential sources, Stasi needs constitute the demand for them, and the level of state control is determined by an interaction of the actions of the regime with those of the citizens. A destabilizing process such as the exposure of the population to West German TV shifts in the supply of informants, and shifts out the demand. Hence, the price offered for the informant services increases, but the total effect on the number of sources is indeterminate. Data analysis confirms that informants in areas with access to WGTV were offered higher rewards. A popular understanding of the operation of authoritarian regimes sees them as using repression not only to suppress the opposition directly but also to force civilians into cooperation. However, existing evidence shows that the methods of informant enrollment varied considerably from coercion, promises of benefits, to appeals to political conviction. Chapter 2 demonstrates the mechanisms that determined the mode of recruitment, linking them to personal characteristics of the informants (party membership, past convictions, access to specific information) and the level of international tensions. Offering gifts to informants is one of the ways in which authoritarian states ensure their continued collaboration. Chapter 3 aims to understand the relationship between the rewards offered to the informants in East Germany and the information they provided. I find that the payments were predominantly used as rewards, but they also served as incentives for further collaboration. Moreover, introducing payments, while in general increasing informant productivity, hurt the otherwise positive relationship between informant tenure and report submissions.

▼ The collectivisation of the East German and Polish agriculture in the 1950s and 1960s stands at the centre of this thesis. The diverging experiences of collectivisation in East Germany and Poland are investigated through contemporary party reports and present-day memories. The thesis aims to open new perspectives on the history of collectivisation in both countries by studying two hitherto neglected aspects: the every-day, standardised negotiation of popular opinion on the farms and the present-day memories of the period. Collectivisation in a transnational and comparative framework has so far only been rarely studies. Most work concentrates on the political and economic history of the policy. Contemporary memories of collectivisation also remain understudied while no attempt at placing (the memories of) collectivisation in the post-Communist discourse in central and eastern Europe has been undertaken so far. This PhD thesis fills this gap in the academic literature by combining the analysis of memories of collectivisation with the close reading of contemporary party and mood reports. On the collective farms, the opinions of peasants on socialist agriculture were based on local and economic circumstances which eventually condensed into a mosaic of personal attitudes which were context-bound and diverse. Saxon and Lower Silesian villagers and functionaries were heteroglossic and constantly engaged in the expression of statements whose meanings were similarly pluralist and context-sensitive. The most profound difference between the Saxon and Lower Silesian interviews lies in the relative position afforded to memories of collectivisation. In the Lower Silesian memories, experiences of collective farming do not occupy a prominent position and could be described as already transformed into historical knowledge. By contrast, the Saxon experiences of collectivised agriculture constitute an integral part in the autobiographies of the speakers. Advisors/Committee Members: Apor, Balazs.

▼ “Politics in Pointe Shoes: The Genesis and Afterlives of Stalinist Drambalet” explores the fraught history of an under-investigated genre of Soviet ballet, known as drambalet [dramatic ballet]. Utilizing a range of little-studied archival sources, this dissertation provides detailed case studies at particular moments of cultural flux to show how the development of drambalet was less predetermined than has been perceived. It argues that drambalet’s genesis was a response to complex and contradictory forces operating in early Soviet culture, and that it was deeply connected to the parallel development of Socialist Realism. In order to assess ballet’s response to cultural policy, particular attention is given to ideological discourse and the political behaviors of those working for major arts institutions. In doing so, this dissertation challenges a reductive view of drambalet as little more than propaganda for an oppressive regime. Introduction II provides a brief overview of the debates on ballet reform during the Soviet 1920s by focusing on several influential critics and two proposed dance genres: the dance symphony and choreographic drama. Chapter 1 centers on GATOB’s (the former Mariinsky Theater) response to its acute repertoire crisis during the period of the First Five-Year Plan (1928-1932). It highlights the challenges inherent in verbalizing the non-verbal art of ballet, focusing on theorizations of the ballet libretto, the libretto competition of 1929, and several “failed” ballets. Chapter 2 functions as an in-depth case study of The Flames of Paris (1932), analyzing this pivotal ballet as a model drambalet and as a response to Socialist Realism. Chapter 3 examines the transplantation of Socialist Realism as doctrine and drambalet as its attendant choreographic practice to the German Democratic Republic in the early 1950s. Drambalet and Socialist Realism were profoundly “tested” by this new set of historical and cultural conditions and both were, ultimately, renegotiated. The epilogue touches upon the peculiar post-Soviet afterlife of drambalet. It shows how certain problems with the genre persist; it also raises a number of provocative questions about what the uncanny return of Stalinist drambalet might reveal about post-Soviet culture. It argues that drambalet’s genesis was a response to complex and contradictory forces operating in early Soviet culture, and that it was deeply connected to the parallel development of Socialist Realism. In order to assess ballet’s response to cultural policy, particular attention is given to ideological discourse and the political behaviors of those working for major arts institutions. In doing so, this dissertation challenges a reductive view of drambalet as little more than propaganda for an oppressive regime. Introduction II provides a brief overview of the debates on ballet reform during the Soviet 1920s by focusing on several influential critics and two proposed dance genres: the dance symphony and choreographic drama. Chapter 1 centers on GATOB’s (the former Mariinsky Theater) response to its acute repertoire crisis during the period of the First Five-Year Plan (1928-1932). It highlights the challenges inherent in verbalizing the non-verbal art of ballet, focusing on theorizations of the ballet libretto, the libretto competition of 1929, and several “failed” ballets. Chapter 2 functions as an in-depth case study of The Flames of Paris (1932), analyzing this pivotal ballet as a model drambalet and as a response to Socialist Realism. Chapter 3 examines the transplantation of Socialist Realism as doctrine and drambalet as its attendant choreographic practice to the German Democratic Republic in the early 1950s. Drambalet and Socialist Realism were profoundly “tested” by this new set of historical and cultural conditions and both were, ultimately, renegotiated. The epilogue touches upon the peculiar post-Soviet afterlife of drambalet. It shows how certain problems with the genre persist; it also raises a number of provocative questions about what the uncanny return of Stalinist drambalet might reveal about post-Soviet culture. ▼ The images of photographic sequence, which show two or sometimes three Soviet soldiers raising the red Soviet banner on the burn-out Reichstag, Germany’s landmark building in Berlin, captured in early May 1945 by the Red Army photographer Yevgeny Anan'evich Khaldei, have become one of the most emblematic pictures of the ending World War Two and the final defeat of the Third Reich. As Schlüsselbild (key picture), a photographic image with national, cultural and political symbolic characteristic, these photographs play as Bilderakte (image acts) play a crucial and active part in the designing and representing history for future interpretation, based remembering of the World War Two and the collapse of the Third Reich and the national reconstruction of post-1945 identity and narrative. This thesis analyzes the compositional appeal of this particular photographic sequence, consisting of several icon key pictures, which have been reproduced in schoolbooks, films, exhibitions and historiography, among other publication platforms. In an examination of documentation of this particular event and its rhetoric importance and the functioning of photography in visualizing and co-design/co-influence the discourse of future representation of the event, the national narrative and myth creation, this thesis addresses beside the compositional appeal and classification of the photographs as Schlüsselbild or Schlagbild (pictorial slogan) on the traditional function of such victory images, it explores the function of such photographs in context of war and to allocate ‘pre-images’ of visualizing epochal changeovers or beginning of new political time periods. The specificity and functionality of ‘documenting’ visually historical changeovers from the perspective of politics, shows secondly in a case study of two reproductions of the Reichstag icon in the context of the German Democratic Republic (GDR) the formative power of photography in the political argumentation process of the ‘liberation’ myth the function of image between the ‘documentary’ evidence and the ‘symbolic’ political message that is argued by the elites of the GDR. The analysis examines one of the possible interpretation of the photographs in the post-1945 political context and the construction of the mythological national narrative and collective memory. Taking the example of the official GDR’s official functionalization and interpretation of the iconic Reichstag sequence, this thesis is an attempt to demonstrate one example of the long pictorial tradition of visually capturing history in order to actively shape and co-determine the reception of the past event influence the future national identity construction and political argumentation communicated and generated by historical key images. ▼ This thesis focuses on the question how literary writers intervened in the debates about the nature and history of the GDR in the period following unification by publishing their autobiographies (1990-1997). The examination of four writers’ autobiographies by separating their epistemic, moral and political relations to the past, while also considering the emotions expressed in them, reveals the underlying, leading arguments in these texts by shedding light on individual, implicit claims. The writers took varying but concrete stances in the debates. The perspective of the writers' relations to the past reveals their arguments and demonstrates that these were primarily based on epistemic and moral claims instead of on direct political suggestions. It shows the variety of the writers' 'political' arguments and explains in which ways the writers made political points or took a stance in these texts, namely by (epistemically) explaining or showing and by (morally) judging, ridiculing or lamenting certain aspects of their lives, thus differentiating the ‘political’ nature of the interventions and the strategies to convey these. Moreover, the thesis' approach reveals and explains the texts' contradictions. These inconsistencies reveal the issues in which the writers' present interpretations cannot be applied to the construction of their pasts, demonstrating where these ‘weak points’ lie and that autobiographies are not as free as fiction. The analysis furthermore reveals strong correlations between the autobiographies’ styles and conceptualisations. Overall, the thesis complements historiography in various ways. For one, it proves the value of studying the autobiographies of literary writers, of whom other scholars of autobiography assumed that they could easily frame their lives around their art and hold back on political questions. The historical approach furthermore contradicts and complements interpretations by literary scholars. It is original in its use of the perspective of relations to the past in combination with comparing expressed emotions in the texts. Ultimately, this analysis sheds light on the ways in which individuals can deal with historical changes impacting not only their present, but also their past lives. ▼ REMEMBERING EAST GERMAN CHILDHOOD IN POST-WENDE LIFE NARRATIVES by JULIANA MAMOU, May 2013 This dissertation explores how East German childhood is remembered in four exemplary auto/biographical texts that appeared in the early years of the twenty-first century. In Jana Hensel's Zonenkinder, Claudia Rusch's Meine freie deutsche Jugend, Jana Simon's Denn wir sind anders, and Robert Ide's Geteilte Träume. The depiction of childhood memories is moreover contextualized in the radical social, political and economic changes after the Wende and their effects on former East Germans as individuals and as a group. Written by authors who constitute a generational cohort who were born in the early to mid-1970s, these life narratives engage in the construction of a counter-memory to dominant West German discourse which devalues virtually everything East German. As such, the literary representation of East German childhood memories constitutes an attempt to define Ossi identity in positive terms and emphatically reject the ascription of a self-concept in terms of lack and insufficiency imposed by the new West German masters. Yet, despite the similarity of seeking a reevaluation of the GDR that does not reflect West German hegemonic discourse, the texts depict different aspects of both the past and the present and also differ, at times quite significantly, in their representation and evaluation of everyday life in East Germany. In my analyses of the four primary texts, which I group together in various combinations in each chapter to explore the respective themes by comparison, I contend that the similarities are due to the authors' shared generational background in terms of their physical exposure to GDR life and the differences due to individually different experiences based on family history as well as the intended purpose of their narration. Chapter One provides an overview of the key theoretical frameworks I employ in analyzing the primary texts. These include the concepts of collective trauma, individual and collective memory and identity as well as discussions of the function of autobiographical texts as memory artifacts in the construction of collective memory. Subsequently, I discuss the four primary texts with regard to thematic clusters. In Chapter Two, I explore the notion of nostalgia and specifically analyze the phenomenon of a nostalgic longing for the East German past known as Ostalgie. While it constitutes a counter-narrative to West German discourse which solely represents the GDR as a dictatorial regime by representing positive memories of ordinary life, Ostalgie idealizes the past to the extent of historical inaccuracy by effacing the interaction of oppressive power structures and ordinary life. Chapter Three turns to the notion of home and Heimat as it informs the identity quest of many East Germans who spent their childhood in the GDR. L’intégration en Saxe des minorités allemandes d’Europe centrale et orientale expulsées à la fin de la Seconde Guerre mondiale se déroule sous autorité soviétique, pendant la construction du socialisme est-allemand. Le réfugié devient officiellement un « Umsiedler » et son intégration se construit entre exigences idéologiques et contrainteséconomiques.L’étude des sources aux différents échelons administratifs et politiques rend possible une différenciation des parcours d’intégration notamment selon les catégories sociales (femmes, enfants, personnes âgées, prisonniers de guerre, etc.). La typologie des réfugiés révèle leurs possibilités variées d’intégration : certains groupes apparaissent comme des « laissés-pour-compte » tandis que d’autres profitent des opportunités politiques du nouveau régime. In Saxony, the integration of the German minorities of Central and Eastern Europe expelled at the end of World War 2 took place under Soviet authority during the establishment of East German socialism. The refugees were officially called “Umsiedler” and their integration was constructed between ideological requirements and economic constraints.The analysis of sources on different administrative and political levels facilitates a differentiation of the integration paths, especially of different social categories (women, children, elderly people, war prisoners, etc.). The typology of the refugees shows the variety of integration possibilities: certain groups appear to have been completely neglected while others took advantage of political opportunities in the new system. But the limits of integration are also demonstrated by this typology, since this integration sometimes took place in an environment of violence and resistance.This study of a German Land takes place in a more general historiography of the integration of German expellees in the two Germanies. Today, the post-reunification context and the confrontation of the memories raise memory issues for the victims of expulsion and are a cause for debate in the scientific community

Die vorliegende Diplomarbeit widmet sich den DDR-Märchenfilmen der DEFA (Deutsche Film AG) und ihrem subversiven Potential im Kontext des repressiven SED-Staates. Unter Anwendung der historisch kontextualisierten Filmanalyse nach Korte (2010) wurden drei Märchenfilme – „Wie heiratet man einen König“ (R: Rainer Simon, 1969), „Sechse kommen durch die Welt“ (R: Rainer Simon, 1972), „Wer reißt den gleich vor’m Teufel aus“ (R: Egon Schlegel, 1977) – nach eingehender Beschäftigung mit den politischen und strukturellen Bedingungen der Filmentstehung, analysiert. Die Filmbeispiele wurden in der DDR als Filme für Jung und Alt beworben, womit die Regisseure für eine generationenübergreifende Unterhaltung sorgen mussten. Daraus ergaben sich einerseits nachvollziehbare Plots für die Kinder, als auch andererseits Doppelbödigkeiten, die als (kritische) Anspielungen auf die zeitgenössische DDR gewertet werden konnten. Die DEFA-Märchenfilme sind ein bisher nur marginal behandeltes Thema in der wissenschaftlichen Literatur und die Arbeit soll dazu beitragen die Wirkungsmacht von Kinderfilmen dazulegen.

This diploma thesis deals with GDR fairytale movies and their subversive potential in the repressive conditions of the SED-state. Three films – „Wie heiratet man einen König“ (R: Rainer Simon, 1969), „Sechse kommen durch die Welt“ (R: Rainer Simon, 1972), „Wer reißt den gleich vor’m Teufel aus“ (R: Egon Schlegel, 1977) – were chosen to analyze them in accordance to Korte’s (2010) principles of a contextualized historic film analysis. Therefore, a detailed study of the political and structural situation of the production time was conducted to highlight ambiguities in the films that allude to contemporary politics and society in the GDR. The movies were advertised as being appropriate for the whole family thus, regisseurs had to find ways to entertain all age groups. For the younger audience the films maintained straightforward fairy-tale plotlines, whereas (critical) allusions to the GDR humored adults. The fairytale movies produced in the DEFA (German Film AG) studios are only a side issue in academic literature so the aim of the paper is to shed light upon the potential complexity of children’s films.

▼ This thesis seeks to chart the development of a comprehensive system of diabetes care in a socialist state, the German Democratic Republic (GDR). There have been few seminal studies to date on chronic diseases using state socialism, and in particular the GDR, as a contextual base. The thesis serves to highlight the fact that chronic diseases were acknowledged, treated and rationalised behind the Iron Curtain. It uses diabetes as a case study to shed light on what exactly the state socialist response was to a rising, and potentially debilitating, disease. It is therefore primarily concerned with what makes diabetes management in the GDR, first, distinctly state socialist, and, second, unmistakably East German. Following the Second World War, a radically different approach to health developed out of the rubble in the Soviet Zone and later GDR. The principle of social hygiene, firmly within the realm of epidemiology, focused on the economic and social causes of disease. It allowed for the previously marginal diabetes to become a focus of attention when East German diabetologists discovered an unexpectedly higher incidence of the disease than previously assumed. Aware that diabetes could lead to complications, the addition of a Marxist-Leninist productionist critique meant that the prevention of invalidity and keeping people in work were of paramount concern, leading to the development of an elaborate screening programme and a prevailing attitude of 'prevention first'. When the diabetologist responsible for the creation of the GDR's showcase '(Central)Institute for Diabetes', Gerhardt Katsch, proclaimed that diabetics were 'conditionally healthy and able to work', it chimed with the expectations of a regime of which he and his ideas were now a part. Surveying the entirety of the GDR's lifetime, this thesis begins by looking at the introduction of new institutions catering to the needs of diabetics, from outpatient specialist polyclinics to a boarding school for diabetic children, and examines the influences underpinning them. The thesis is structured chronologically with embedded themes in a deliberate attempt to reveal how broader events, including autarkic economic policies, diplomatic relations and political upheaval came to shape the novel, East German approach to diabetes. ▼ The science fiction of the GDR addresses the nature of the technologically-advanced society that has emerged since the end of the Cold War and the concomitant economic, social, and political processes that today are collectively designated by the concept of globalization. It does so, because science fiction is a genre of modernity that innately considers issues of technology, science, and progress through the technique of temporal dislocation. GDR science fiction is one national variant of this modern genre that maintains the prerequisites and conventions that define it across national borders and on the global scale that is this genre's traditionally acknowledged ambit. This dissertation comparatively investigates the thematic and formal ways in which specific science fiction novels and short stories from the period 1979 - 2000 by GDR authors narrativize key elements of the discourse of globalization. By examining the correspondence in theoretical understanding of the genre between East and West, and providing comparative literary examples, it shows how these works are representative examples of the SF genre that utilize the concepts of temporal contraction and technological dependence that are also manifest in the discourse of globalization. Systematically treating both discourses through the juxtaposition of science fiction text and globalization theory, it demonstrates how these socialist narratives both foreshadow and explore the discourse of globalization from the local perspective of the GDR in a global world that was not yet determined by the events of 1989 and the end of the Cold War. The dissertation consists of three core chapters in which a specific GDR story is examined in relation to a particular aspect of globalization. These aspects are surveillance, access, and annexation. Alternately, they could be described as globalization as a political project, as a chimerical projection, and as an imperialistic project of transnational Americanization. Through close textual analysis that employs examples from the commercial media landscape, it illustrates the ways in which these themes are manifested in GDR SF and examines how science fiction has become a customary practice and general hallmark of the era. Science fiction and globalization are not only mutually compatible, but are also logically analogous.

▼ Cultural diplomacy increased in importance in German foreign policy following World War II (WWII) and reunification in 1989. The German model of cultural diplomacy emerged out of the need for a separation of powers between state and cultural politics, and resulted in a unique approach in which the Goethe-Institut (Goethe Institute – GI) became and remains the principal actor representing German culture and language abroad. The GI was re-established after WWII and now operates in 191 countries. As distinct from propaganda, contemporary German diplomacy aims to portray a realistic and multi-faceted image of Germany; it utilises public engagements, various media and – in particular – film. Other nations are adopting this strategy, as the growing number of nationality-based film festivals worldwide shows. Researchers in the emerging field of film festival studies have hitherto scrutinised the role of film festivals in the circulation of film, global cinephilia, as public spheres, as transnational spaces and time events, but not yet as part of cultural and contemporary cinematic diplomacy. My research adds to extant research on contemporary cinematic and cultural diplomacy through analysis of the Festival of German Films in Australia’s (AFGF) role in German cultural diplomacy. The AFGF was the largest festival of German films outside of Germany and was organised by the GI in collaboration with the German Films Service and Marketing GmbH. The AFGF was established in Sydney and Melbourne in 2002, and ran until 2016; it was a platform for Germany and German culture, as well as a marketplace for presenting German films to Australian audiences and distributors. I analyse developments in AFGF programming, choice of films and time-events, with particular focus on the period 2013–15. My research employs a mixed-method approach comprised of audience surveys, audience focus groups, and stakeholder interviews complemented by event and film analysis. My analysis focuses on the three most prominent themes in films and curation of the AFGF from 2002–15: the two world wars, the Deutsche Demokratische Republik (German Democratic Republic), and multicultural Germany. In understanding film festivals as socially constructed, I analyse each category in accordance with Lefebvre’s tripartite concept of physical, curated and lived space. I emphasise an understanding of the AFGF as a time-event and of the roles of its component time-events. These time-events are curated occasions; the GI highlights particular films and themes by screening them on either opening or closing nights, or as part of special events, such as a question-and-answer session or an associated culinary or musical experience. I conclude the thesis by emphasising the potential and the challenges of cinematic diplomacy with a particular focus on contemporary German cinematic diplomacy. Further, I highlight increasingly transnational aspects of the AFGF and their relationship to the cultural diplomatic role Germany holds as an advocate for human rights as a consequence of WWII…

▼ Literature by authors from the GDR has often been read with a focus on its sociopolitical context ‒ before and after the fall of the Wall. This rather one-dimensional approach has resulted in a lack of engagement with the more complex issues raised in many of those texts. Frequently, they address broader theoretical questions and delve into universal themes, which tend to be overlooked or sidelined. This PhD thesis concentrates on a selection of post-Wende texts by Monika Maron and Jenny Erpenbeck, two authors from the former East Germany. Starting from the premise that both authors' oeuvres serve on one level as critical investigations of the GDR and the significant aftermath of its collapse, I aim to demonstrate that these narratives have more to offer. My analysis brings to light the complexity of the examined works by addressing what it regards as their central themes: the exploration of questions around the topics of Heimat and memory. This research project draws attention to the texts' representation of underlying issues such as dislocation and fragmentation, and in doing so it examines how both authors depict concerns that go beyond the GDR and its demise. A key task is the analysis of the ways in which Monika Maron and Jenny Erpenbeck portray the symptoms of a wider ‘modern conditionʼ, a state characterized by instability and uncertainty. Based on the concept of ambivalence, introduced to the debates about modernity by Zygmunt Bauman in the early 1990s, this original comparative approach explores the failure and the ultimate collapse of the socialist utopia as a paradigm for the breakdown of the ‘grand narrativesʼ in modern, Western pluralist societies. Thus, this PhD thesis illuminates how both authors position themselves in relation to competing discourses about the GDR, and it simultaneously alerts the reader to the texts' inherent complexity by revealing their strong ties to topical issues regarding the much-debated term of modernity. Ultimately, I claim that Maron and Erpenbeck set out to investigate the impact of larger processes of fragmentation, and try to establish the possible role of and a ‘placeʼ for the individual that is exposed to historical forces and the rapid changes of spatio-temporal parameters within modernity, of which the GDR experience forms one part.

The principle of social hygiene, firmly within the realm of epidemiology, focused on the economic and social causes of disease. It allowed for the previously marginal diabetes to become a focus of attention when East German diabetologists discovered an unexpectedly higher incidence of the disease than previously assumed. Aware that diabetes could lead to complications, the addition of a Marxist-Leninist productionist critique meant that the prevention of invalidity and keeping people in work were of paramount concern, leading to the development of an elaborate screening programme and a prevailing attitude of 'prevention first'. When the diabetologist responsible for the creation of the GDR's showcase '(Central)Institute for Diabetes', Gerhardt Katsch, proclaimed that diabetics were 'conditionally healthy and able to work', it chimed with the expectations of a regime of which he and his ideas were now a part. Surveying the entirety of the GDR's lifetime, this thesis begins by looking at the introduction of new institutions catering to the needs of diabetics, from outpatient specialist polyclinics to a boarding school for diabetic children, and examines the influences underpinning them. The thesis is structured chronologically with embedded themes in a deliberate attempt to reveal how broader events, including autarkic economic policies, diplomatic relations and political upheaval came to shape the novel, East German approach to diabetes.

▼ This study examines the Mentality of civil servants as well as the system of public administration in the German Democratic Republic and in the Federal Republic of Germany. The study uses two theories, 'New Institutionalism' and 'Practice Theory' which were created by French sociologist Bourdieu. In chapter 2, if how die mutual relation between the mentality of civil servant and the public administrative System was connected, according this the public administrative system as a external System could be expressed through the statements of the civil servant. this is externalization of a internalized System. In Chapters three and four of this study, outside of the historical analysis of a public administrative field in the both East and West Germanys public administrative organizations and personnel administration are dealt with. Chapter five deals with the internalization of the external system through the body of the civil servants. The internalization of the external system was expressed through the daily life of civil servants from the way they think, attitude, to their statements. According to this, the interviews of civil servants in both countries can confirm the Mentality of civil servant as internalized external system. The result of the interview analysis is the same as the next. The formation of mentality of civil servant in the German Democratic Republic played a vital role in the leading role of a Marxian party and democratic centralization. It was confirmed that East Germany put importance on vertical relation and the orders of superiors at the public administration. Characteristics in the public administrative System have influenced the formation of the mentality of civil servant in the German Democratic Republic. ▼ The study is in two parts. The first part examines the representation of the academic institute and the figure of the academic in GDR literature in the latter half of the GDR state’s existence. Specifically, it explores the interface between realist critiques of science and/or GDR academia and metaphorically coded critiques of the GDR state in a selection of texts by Christa Wolf, Helga Königsdorf and Günter de Bruyn. In this focus on the relationship between the realist and the metaphorical dimensions of the texts, my study differs from previous scholarship which has tended to foreground one or other aspect. A particular focus of this study are the ways in which these writers model the academic institute as a microcosm of the GDR state, with academic research projects standing for the GDR socialist project, and institutional dynamics representing social relations in the GDR. Having explored the relationship between the representation of the academic institute, the academic world and GDR society, I conclude the first part of this study by arguing that, perhaps surprisingly, there are similarities between these GDR ‘academia tales’ and the Anglo-American campus novel. Part Two of the study begins by examining the post-Wende representation of the restructuring, or Abwicklung, of the GDR academic establishment in texts by Helga Königsdorf and John Erpenbeck. This is followed by an overview of a series of texts in which the post-Wende experiences of east German academics, while treated more peripherally, nevertheless generate interesting readings. While there have been many historical and sociological analyses of academic Abwicklung, this is the first to examine literary treatments of the phenomenon. It explores the representation of academic Abwicklung both as a social issue in its own right, and as a starting point for broader political commentaries. Furthermore, by exploring the continued use of the academic institute as a metaphor for the GDR state, even after the latter’s collapse, this study supports the view that the Wende did not lead to an immediate reconceptualisation of political and aesthetic approaches in the literature produced by east German writers.
