▼ Geometrical frustration is an intriguing area where systems show exotic spin states that are not exhibited in any other systems, including spin fluctuation down to lowest temperature in spin liquid materials, finite entropy at absolute zero and magnetic monopoles as emergent particles in spin ice materials, as well as the connection to neuron networks (chapter 1). Despite the fertile physics in geometrical frustration, many microscopic phenomena remain unclear, for example how the spin frustration is accommodated and how the defects affect the local frustration? In our research, we adapt a different approach – we carefully design systems of artificial frustration where the constitutive elements are large enough to be directly imaged by advance techniques such as magnetic force microscopy or Lorentz-TEM, but still small enough to maintain single-domain magnetic moments (chapter 2 and 3). Such elements are precisely controlled to form different arrays that have frustrated neighboring interactions, i.e. not all the magnetostatic interaction between elements can be simultaneously satisfied. However, the strength of this interaction places it beyond the limit of thermal annealing – instead we design demagnetization protocols using external magnetic field, and first study the consequence of protocols with different patterns and step sizes in chapter 4. Having optimized the demagnetization protocol, we investigate the effects of the geometry on energetics and moment correlations by fabricating a series of lattice arrays sharing the same symmetry or topology in chapter 5. Finally the finite size effect is also studied by comparing isolated clusters with frustrated magnetostatic interaction to those without frustration in chapter 6 – the distinction between the two is attributed to kinetic barriers in the demagnetization process. ▼ Nano-materials are a main topic in condensed matter research because of unusual properties that originate from quantum mechanical effects at this length scale. In this thesis I consider nano-materials from a geometrical perspective. The atoms/molecules could be restricted topologically; their electronic interactions (reaction through charge transfer), however, are still allowed. The physical and chemical properties of materials under this restriction change dramatically. This dissertation is mainly devoted to the study of those changes in physical and chemical properties, based on first-principles computation techniques (Density Functional Theory). DFT is an ab-initio quantum mechanical computation method used for materials as well as molecules. It predicts stable molecular/crystal structures and describes a chemical reaction and phase transition. It also provides an understanding and quantitative prediction of materials properties, including mechanical, thermal, electrical, optical, magnetic, and chemical properties. In this thesis I mainly use DFT to examine the energetics and band structures of geometrically constrained nano-materials. A brief overview of Density Functional Theory is given in Ch.1. Graphene (a single layer membrane of carbon atoms) and hexagonal boron nitride, which as a similar structure to that of graphene are basic building blocks for all the work in this thesis. Ch.2 covers some basic structural and electronic properties of these materials. In Ch. 3, I extend that to graphene nanoribbons, finite-width stripes of graphene. In Ch.4, I propose a topological frustrated system based on a graphene membrane. A suspended and impenetrable graphene layer breaks the translational symmetry in vacuum and divides it into two distinct sub-spaces. Imagine alkali atoms released above the layer and halogen from below. The layer prevents direct interaction between alkali and halogen as each species is restricted in its own half-space, so the formation of a regular salt crystal is forbidden. However, they could still interact via charge transfer through the sheet. The charge transfer from alkali breaks halogen molecular bonds and creates a cross-layer alkali/halogen dipole pair. This uncompensated collective dipolar interaction penalizes the halogen states and raises them to the Fermi level. It thus generates an unusual band-structure with nearly flat bands at Fermi level. A slight change in the halogen position causes the dramatic change in electronic structures (a semiconductor-semimetal-metal transition), leading to the breakdown of Born-Oppenheimer approximation and possibly to strong many-body effects (polaron, superconductivity...). The stable open-shell halogen also suggests a potential catalytic behavior by accommodating to a reactant transition state. This system defines a new regime of chemical interaction that is governed by a topological constraint. ▼ Geometric magnetic frustration arises when the crystal structure of a compound inherently hinders long-range magnetic ordering. As numerous important and unusual magnetic properties are most easily observed in geometrically frustrated materials, it is an important topic in solid state chemistry. Frustration often results from a combination of antiferromagnetic interactions and a triangular lattice structure. This thesis will discuss geometric magnetic frustration and other magnetic properties in two structure families which possess a prominent triangular motif. Chapter 1 serves as an introduction to solid state chemistry as a whole, as well as introducing magnetic concepts that will be referenced for the remainder of the work. The main body of the thesis is divided into two parts of four chapters each. Part I focuses on compounds with the YbFe2O4 structure, while Part II describes the magnetic properties of several garnet-type materials. Part I begins with an introduction to the structure and properties of compounds with the YbFe2O4 structure in Chapter 2, followed by a methodological chapter describing several methods of crystal growth, including the complex Floating Zone growth method employed in Chapters 4 and 5. These two chapters discuss the synthesis and magnetic characterization of the compounds TmMgGaO4 and ErMgGaO4, respectively. Chapter 6, the first chapter of Part II, serves as an introduction to the garnet crystal structure, which occurs in many naturally-occurring minerals. Chapter 7 discusses the subject of high-pressure synthesis, which is the method used to synthesize the compounds studied in Chapter 8. Chapter 8 itself is a magnetic study of the garnet Mn3Fe2Si3O12, as well a comparison to a glassy material of the same nominal composition. Finally, Chapter 9 is an in-depth magnetic study of a family of lithium-containing rare earth garnets of the form Li3RE3Te2O12. Advisors/Committee Members: Cava, Robert J (advisor).

▼ Preventing an individual from obtaining a goal may have three effects on him. It may frustrate him, violate an expectancy of goal attainment, and eliminate his freedom to obtain the goal. Three theories, each focusing on a different aspect of the thwarting, offer the hypothesis that aggression is likely to follow thwarting. Frustration and aggression theory predicts that simple frustration will instigate aggression; expectancy theory predicts that the violation of an expectancy resulting from a thwarting will instigate aggression; reactance theory hypothesizes that the elimination of behavioral freedom, which results in the arousal of reactance, may instigate aggressive responses. The present study was performed to test the hypotheses on aggression offered by these three theories. Subjects were told that there were three incentives being offered for participating in the experiment. Some subjects were told that an experimental assistant would assign them an incentive, others were told that they would receive the incentive they had rated most attractive on a pre-measure, and a third group of subjects was informed that they would have their choice of the incentives. The experimental assistant then assigned subjects either the most, second most or least attractive incentive. Subjects' ratings of the assistant served as the measure of aggression. The results supported reactance theory in that when the assignment of incentives by the assistant eliminated subjects' freedom of choice they ex- pressed more aggression than when the assignment did not eliminate the behavioral freedom. Further, when the assignment eliminated freedom, the less attractive the assigned incentive, the greater was the resulting aggression. Some support was found for the hypothesis that a violation of expectancy will result in aggression. When subjects expected to obtain the most attractive incentive and were assigned the least attractive item, they were more aggressive than when they held the same expectancy and received the second most attractive item. However, when their expectancy was violated by receiving the second most attractive incentive, they were not more aggressive than subjects who did not have their expectancy violated. There was no support for the hypothesis that simple frustration is a sufficient condition to instigate aggression. From the results indicating that, regardless of the incentive assigned the subject, there was more aggression exhibited when this assignment eliminated freedom than when the assignment resulted only in a violated expectancy or simple frustration, the speculation was offered that the arousal of reactance may be a necessary condition if a thwarting is to instigate aggression. ▼ Les réseaux de nanoaimants à frustration géométrique font l'objet d'investigations depuis maintenant une décennie. Ils permettent de réaliser expérimentalement des modèles de spins théoriques qui n'ont parfois pas d'équivalent naturel. Ces réseaux présentent, entre autres, l'intérêt d'offrir un accès direct aux configurations locales de spin. Le travail présenté dans ce manuscrit vise à réaliser expérimentalement le modèle dit de "glace carrée" dans un réseau nanoaimants. Ce modèle hautement frustré présente un état fondamental massivement dégénéré, à l'origine de son entropie résiduelle à basse température. Dans ce travail, nous allons présenter deux approches permettant de réaliser le modèle de glace carrée.La première consiste à introduire dans le réseau carré conventionnel des nanoaimants supplémentaires. Sous certaines conditions, ceux-ci agissent en modifiant les couplages effectifs entre les aimants du réseau principal. Pour cela, les aimants additionnels doivent se comporter passivement vis à vis du réseau principal. Dans une étude théorique, nous montrerons que l'analyse du hamiltonien dans l'espace réciproque échoue à saisir les propriétés essentielles de ce nouveau modèle. C'est en calculant l'énergie de configurations aléatoires de spins que nous prouverons que notre système présente les caractéristiques recherchées. Nous porterons une attention particulière à l'effet de la portée et de la nature des interactions entre aimants. Grâce à des simulations micromagnétiques par différences finies, nous déterminerons les géométries pertinentes à employer pour une réalisation expérimentale. Grâce aux outils de microfabrication disponibles au laboratoire, nous avons pu fabriquer de tels réseaux. Les aimants sont constitués de permalloy mince, ce qui leur permet d'atteindre un régime superparamagnétique lors d'un recuit thermique. Nous avons observé que les aimants additionnels influencent comme prévu la physique du réseau carré. Un biais expérimental a cependant engendré une aimantation rémanente élevée dans certains réseaux. Cet effet a malheureusement masqué les corrélations caractéristiques attendues dans le modèle de glace carrée. Mais ces travaux ont permis de mettre en évidence un effet inattendu des aimants additionnels. Ceux-ci semblent stimuler les fluctuations thermiques dans les réseaux qui en sont pourvus.La seconde approche consiste à surélever les aimants orientés dans l'une des deux directions du réseau carré. Nous emploierons une méthodologie similaire à celle décrite précédemment pour l'étude de ce nouveau système. Théoriquement, le contrôle de la surélévation permet d'explorer trois modèles de spins différents, dont le modèle de glace carrée. Nous avons fabriqué des réseaux avec plusieurs surélévations, estimées au moyen de simulations micromagnétiques. Pour des raisons techniques, nous avons cette fois travaillé avec des nanoaimants de permalloy épais. Ils présentent la caractéristique d'être athermiques. ▼ Geometrical frustration occurs in systems where not all the competing interactions can be minimized simultaneously due to the specific geometries. An example of geometrically frustrated magnetic materials is spin ice, which is in pyrochlore structure with corner sharing tetrahedra and exhibits zero-point entropy and emergent monopole excitations. However, in spin ice materials the lattice geometry cannot be controlled easily and individual spins cannot be probed. In order to investigate the local accommodation of frustration, our group developed artificial frustrated arrays consisting of lithographically fabricated single-domain nanomagnets. These arrays are arranged in different geometries and lattice constants, allowing us to control the symmetry and strength of the magnetostatic interactions. Several geometries have been studied: a square lattice, which shows ice-like, short-range correlations analogous to the spin ice materials; a hexagonal (kagome) lattice, which shows large degenerate ground states and monopole-like elementary excitations; and a triangular lattice, in which we found that indirect interactions and those mediated by further neighbors can be tuned to be dominant over direct interactions. We have also studied frustrated arrays comprised of nanomagnets with magnetic moments perpendicular to the substrate plane. These perpendicular arrays exhibit striking similarity to their in-plane counterparts, indicating a universality in artificial frustrated systems independent of material realization or moment orientations. Recently, our group developed a method of thermally annealing the artificial frustrated systems and achieved long-range ordered ground state domains, especially the thermally annealed hexagonal lattice arrays show evidence of a magnetic charge ordered state which has been predicted by theorists but never experimentally observed before. ▼ Iron phosphate oxide, Fe3PO4O3, is a crystalline solid featuring magnetic Fe3+ ions on a complex lattice composed of closely-spaced triangles. Previous work from our research group on this compound has proposed a helical magnetic structure below T = 163 K attributed to J1-J2 competing interactions between nearest-neighbor and next-nearest-neighbor iron atoms. This was based on neutron powder diffraction featuring unique broad, flat-topped magnetic reflections due to needle-like magnetic domains. In order to confirm the magnetic structure and origins of frustration, this thesis will expand upon the research focused on this compound. The first chapter focuses on single crystal growth of Fe3PO4O3. While neutron powder diffraction provides insight to the magnetic structure, powder and domain averaging obfuscate a conclusive structure for Fe3PO4O3 and single crystal neutron scattering is necessary. Due to the incongruency of melting, single crystal growth has proven challenging. A number of techniques including flux growth, slow cooling, and optical floating zone growth were attempted and success has been achieved via heterogenous chemical vapor transport from FePO4 using ZrCl4 as a transport agent. These crystals are of sufficient size for single crystal measurements on modern neutron diffractometers. Dilution of the magnetic sublattice in frustrated magnets can also provide insight into the nature of competing spin interactions. Dilution of the Fe3+ lattice in Fe3PO4O3 is accomplished by substituting non-magnetic Ga3+ to form the solid solution series Fe3-xGaxPO4O3 with x = 0, 0.012, 0.06, 0.25, 0.5, 1.0, 1.5. The magnetic susceptibility and neutron powder diffraction data of these compounds are presented. A dramatic decrease of the both the helical pitch length and the domain size is observed with increasing x; for x > 0.5, the compounds lack long range magnetic order. The phases that do exhibit magnetic order show a decrease in helical pitch with increasing x as determined from the magnitude of the magnetic propagation vector. This trend can be qualitatively reproduced by increasing the ratio of J2/J1 in the Heisenberg model. Intriguingly, the domain size extracted from peak broadening of the magnetic reflections is nearly equal to the pitch length for each value of x, which suggests that the two qualities are linked in this unusual antiferromagnet. The last chapter focuses on the oxyfluoride Fe3PO_7-xFx. Through fluorination using low-temperature chimie douce reactions with polytetrafluoroethylene, the magnetic properties show changes in the magnetic susceptibility, isothermal magnetization, and neutron powder diffraction. The magnetic susceptibility shows a peak near T = 13 K and a zero field cooled/field cooled splitting at T = 78 K. The broad, flat-topped magnetic reflections in the powder neutron diffraction exhibit a decrease in width and increase in intensity. ▼ Countless industries rely on lithium ion batteries for dependable energy storage. As society continues to evolve and move towards integration of more electric powered devices and vehicles, battery technologies must innovate to provide these many industries with larger voltage solutions while maintaining or reducing battery size and weight. Examples of large industries that would benefit from improved energy storage technology include consumer electronics, electric vehicles, and renewable energy. All solid state batteries have the potential for higher voltages and safer use as they are more resistant to combustion. Solid electrolytes are currently an obstacle preventing wide scale deployment of solid state batteries as a material has yet to be found that satisfies the required properties of high ionic conductivity and voltage stability against both the cathode and anode. Computational methods can be used as a relatively fast way to discern material properties that could potentially be used to predict new solid electrolytes. However, current theories and known material properties that describe ionic conductivity are not practical for use in high-throughput (HT) prediction algorithms. In order to find better descriptors of ionic conductivity for use in a HT screening one must first have a better physical understanding of superionic conductors and how they differ from regular ion conductors. Pursuing this topic, we studied the lattice dynamical properties and cation disorder of a known superionic conductor, sodium beta-alumina, and compared the results to similar studies conducted on recently synthesized lithium halide materials, Li3YCl6 and LiCs2YCl6. Density functional theory was used to find optimum geometries and calculate the energies of each configuration and the forces experienced by each atom. The harmonic approximation was then used to extrapolate from these results and calculate phonon properties of each material. The superionic conductor, sodium beta alumina, was found to have a soft sodium sub-lattice that is isolated from a stiff anion framework of alumina. In contrast, the fast lithium conducting halide material Li3YCl6 has a soft lithium sublattice that is not isolated from its soft anion framework made up of Y and Cl. Lastly, LiCs2YCl6 is found to have similar phonon properties to Li3YCl6, but exhibits no discernible lithium conductivity. Both sodium beta alumina and Li3YCl6 exhibit frustration in their respective mobile ion sublattices, which leads to disorder of the mobile ion, unlike LiCs2YCl6 which has no frustration or observable disorder in the crystal lattice. Thus having disorder in the mobile ion sublattice is important when searching for a fast ion conductor, whereas having a soft lattice and weak bonding in the material does not always imply fast ion conduction. In addition to disorder, superionic conductors often possess a soft mobile ion sublattice accompanied by a stiff anion framework in which the mobile ion sublattice is free to move about. ▼ Frustrated systems, typically characterized by competing interactions that cannot all be simultaneously satisfied, are ubiquitous in nature and display many rich phenomena and novel physics. Artificial spin ices (ASIs), arrays of lithographically patterned Ising-like single-domain magnetic nanostructures, are highly tunable systems that have proven to be a novel method for studying the effects of frustration and associated properties. The strength and nature of the frustrated interactions between individual magnets are readily tuned by design and the exact microstate of the system can be determined by a variety of characterization techniques. Recently, thermal activation of ASI systems has been demonstrated, introducing the spontaneous reversal of individual magnets and allowing for new explorations of novel phase transitions and phenomena using these systems. In this work, we introduce a new, robust material with favorable magnetic properties for studying thermally active ASI and use it to investigate a variety of ASI geometries. We reproduce previously reported perfect ground-state ordering in the square geometry and present studies of the kagome lattice showing the highest yet degree of ordering observed in this fully frustrated system. We consider theoretical predictions of long-range order in ASI and use both our experimental studies and kinetic Monte Carlo simulations to evaluate these predictions. Next, we introduce controlled topological defects into our square ASI samples and observe a new, extended frustration effect of the system. When we introduce a dislocation into the lattice, we still see large domains of ground-state order, but, in every sample, a domain wall containing higher energy spin arrangements originates from the dislocation, resolving a discontinuity in the ground-state order parameter. Locally, the magnets are unfrustrated, but frustration of the lattice persists due to its topology. We demonstrate the first direct imaging of spin configurations resulting from topological frustration in any system and make predictions on how dislocations could affect properties in numerous materials systems. ▼ This dissertation investigated the neural basis of reversal learning and frustration, and the impact of the serotonin transporter polymorphism on these neural mechanisms. Reversal learning involves the ability to flexibly adjust behavior to changes in reinforcement (i.e. the ability to avoid frustration). There were 4 fMRI studies of healthy adults in this thesis. The first adapted a previously developed reversal learning (RL) paradigm. Critically, this adaptation allowed separation at the neural level of responses associated with processing reinforcement expectation relative to feedback. Previous studies have implicated areas including dorsomedial prefrontal cortex (dmPFC), dorsal anterior cingulate (dACC) and dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (dlPFC) in RL. However, RL involves multiple stages, which were not separately examined in these studies. The first study sought to functionally dissect the neural substrates of the different stages of RL. The second study introduced a frustrative non-reward phase where expected rewards were omitted. Frustration is experienced when an individual performs an action in expectation of a reward but does not actually receive that reward. Individuals with deficits in reversal learning are thus more likely to fail to achieve their goals, and are at increased risk for frustration. These two studies tested the hypothesis that the neural circuitry underlying RL and frustration share common substrates. Studies 3 and 4 investigated the impact of the serotonin transporter polymorphism (5-HTTLPR) on neural processing during RL and frustration. Previous findings have suggested that 5-HT is critical for both flexible responding and frustration, but surprisingly little work has addressed how these systems are related or interact. The studies indicated that learning to avoid frustration activates brain regions implicated in reversal learning (dACC, dmPFC, dlPC), and also demonstrated a novel role for the posterior cingulate cortex (PCC). In non-frustrating conditions, individuals with the short allele of the 5-HTT exhibited decreased activity in response to punishment information. However, under frustrating conditions, the short allele exerted its strongest effects on neural responding in dmPFC and PCC. Taken together, these studies explicated the neural circuitry underlying reversal learning and frustration, and provide support for the role of the serotonin transporter in modulating these regions under provocation. ▼ This research study utilizes self-determination theory (SDT) to examine employees' daily need satisfaction for autonomy, competence, and relatedness in work and nonwork domains and their association with work outcomes. Specifically, daily work-related need satisfaction and need frustration are theorized to represent resource-rich and resource-depleted states within employees that are associated with cognitive engagement or disengagement with work during nonwork time (i.e., psychological detachment, positive work reflection, negative work reflection), and subsequent next day work engagement and exhaustion. Furthermore, previous research indicates that need satisfaction and frustration exist in multiple life domains. Daily experiences of need satisfaction and frustration are therefore examined in both work and nonwork domains. Participants recruited from a technology company located in the Pacific Northwest took part in a 2-week daily diary design consisting of 7 study days. Multilevel correlation analyses from a sample of forty individuals (N_obs = 225) demonstrated that only some unique components of need satisfaction and frustration at work were significantly related to positive and negative work reflection at the within-person level, providing only minimal support for the hypothesized relations. Specifically, work-related need satisfaction, and particularly work-related need satisfaction of competence, were positively related to positive work reflection. Work-related need frustration of competence and relatedness were positively linked to negative work reflection in the evening. Daily need satisfaction and frustration, as well as cognitive engagement and disengagement with work during nonwork time, were both unrelated to next day work engagement and exhaustion. Low response rates and insufficient statistical power prevented analysis of more complex structural models. Given the methodological and statistical limitations of this research, a set of future research propositions are described. Additional results, as well as practical and theoretical implications, limitations, and future directions are discussed. This research contributes to a growing area of organizational research rooted in SDT, specifically by considering needs across life domains, providing initial findings, and proposing alternative models to explain interactions of needs across life domains.
