▼ Most frequently enunciated as a questioning the notion of identity appears only when an interrogation such as "Who am I?" becomes even conceivable. Thus any reflection on the issue of identity involves an inquiry into the conditions of emergence of this questioning. Considered in the multi-faceted Palestinian context, this concept is particularly complex because of its political ramifications and its national and collective dimensions. Facing the Zionist project that claimed Palestine (supposedly a land without people) as the land of return for the Jews (a people without a land), the Palestinians had to face a denial of their existence that is rare in modern history. The creation of the state of Israel in 1948 (the Nakba for the Palestinians), expelled more than 700.000 Palestinians in the neighboring Arab countries of Egypt, Jordan, Lebanon and Syria, transforming them into refugees who also had to face the societies of their host countries. This situation sharpened the Palestinians' conception of national identity and their awareness as a people even in the absence of an official state. The books by Elias Sanbar and Racha Salah that this dissertation examines share not only a historical background but a vision of a distinct Palestinian identity in which, I contend, collective memory and lieux de mémoire (Pierre Nora) play a crucial role. Yet in many ways these works are also strikingly different. The main objective of this dissertation is to study their respective representation of the Palestinian struggle to preserve and consolidate a particular identity as well as demonstrate how the particular literary forms they use are integral to the struggle they depict. Chapter I sets the historical and socio-political framework: Going back to the period when the fall of the Ottoman Empire was followed by the British mandate on Palestine, it analyzes the ways in which Palestinian nationalism developed in contending with both the British colonization and the Zionist ambition of establishing a Jewish national homeland. Chapter II considers several 20th-century theories on nationalism (by Ernest Gellner, Eric Hobsbawm, Benedict Anderson and Anthony Smith, among others) to assess the light that they help shed on the "Palestinian question" and its specificity. Chapter III first investigates the three historical periods whereby Elias Sanbar (a celebrated, second-generation Palestinian who lived mostly in exile in Europe) constructs the Palestinian identity in his socio-political essay entitled Figures du Palestinien. Identité des origines, identité de devenir; the second part of this chapter shows how Le bien des absents, in resorting to the different mode of biography (unusual in Sanbar's production) and a nonlinear narrative mode, builds upon various "sites of memory" and cultural artifacts to shape its representations of Palestinian identity. ▼ Perpetually exposed to geographical or emotional exile, the human being never finishes discovering himself. Each exile is the beginning of a new adventure in which chance holds the reins. In this thesis, I will analyze the writing of the exile of three French-speaking immigrants who have settled in Canada for some time. Born elsewhere than in Canada, the three French-Canadian writers reflected on their status, what they would have become if they did not immigrate to this country from their respective countries torn apart by the war, dictatorship or even cultural oppression. The search for a stable life and security prevailed throughout their travels and the first moments in the new country. More pragmatic than idealistic, they all knew that the task would not be easy once arrived at their destination. As a result, under the pressure of circumstances, they agreed to transform themselves. The project is significant, but sometimes their cultural and spiritual beliefs resurface. It is obvious they still have part of their roots connected to their origin countries. However, my analysis also looks at the difference in the female experience of emigration that differs substantially from the male experience. This difference, which represents a big problem, is often overlooked. According to my thesis, I will try to illustrate the different experiences the three writers lived in their journey. The point is to understand the hardship they overcame and how their identities are challenged. Would it be easier to go away and live an American life, or die to put an end to the suffering? The first writer is Dany Laferrière, who is originally from Haiti. I focus over two of his novels, the first one is Chronique de la dérive douce and the second is L' Énigme du retour. I also use some of his other novels that are communicating with the two novels I am working on. Then the second writer is Kim Thuy who is from Vietnam. I will focus on two of her novels, Vi and Ru. These two novels complete each other. The author begins the story of exile with the Ru and finishes the journey with Vi. Finally, the third writer Ying Chen is from China. I'm going to focus on two of her novels which are Les lettres chinoises and L’Ingratitude. Advisors/Committee Members: Frederic Rondeau, Kathryn Slott, Susan Pinette.

▼ The concept of the author has changed over time, along with the forms of media that have been used to circulate texts. In my dissertation, I examine assumptions about writers with roots on the African continent by looking at representations of their status and function as authors as they appear in fiction and in the public sphere. I explore the changes in both the academy's and the public's perceptions of literature in French, and examine how these perceptions are related to current understandings of migration, transnationalism, and "legitimate" cultural production. The generation of writers working after independence from European colonialism in the 1960s, 70s, and 80s re-appropriated language and forms, resisting political and cultural domination. Decades later, can it be said that francophone writers today are as much a part of the literary landscape in French as any other author? I study the writings and self-presentation of five prominent authors writing in French today: Calixthe Beyala (Cameroon), Fatou Diome (Senegal), Bessora (Gabon/Switzerland), Alain Mabanckou (Congo), and Léonora Miano (Cameroon). Through their public performances as well as in their published work, these five writers adapt the repertoire for the writer labeled as "African" or "immigrant" in their own ways. They may play into or play up some of these prescribed roles, but in so doing they highlight the apparatus that structures the publishing industry, including the problematic vestiges of colonialism that remain in place there. Recent theories of the posture de l'écrivain (posturing of the writer) have not yet been fully applied to writers outside the Franco-French, Parisian-centered literary field. I examine the implications of considering the performance of the authorial persona when applied to works by French-speaking authors with origins outside this hyper-centralized industry. My corpus includes their written works, their presence in both traditional and digital media, and their appearances in person at literary events. Focusing on their self-presentation in written and embodied performances enables a more complete grasp of specific ways the literary field is configured for francophone writers, and the differences that remain: in the roles imposed upon them, and in their own authorial aesthetic.

▼ In the French Caribbean islands of Guadeloupe and Martinique, the father is stigmatized because he is often absent from the family structure. The possible reasons for his absence can be found in the Code Noir [Black Code] promulgated in 1685 in the French Caribbean colonies and in 1724 in Mauritius and Reunion. The Black Code is intended to regulate the lives of slaves in the colonies by monitoring their lifestyles, their religion (imposed Catholicism) and their status as commodities. More important, the legal document positions women at the head of the household by defining the legal status of children according to that of their mother, and subsequently denying the black man a role in the family except as procreator. Article XII of the Code stipulates that [c]hildren born in marriages between slaves will belong to the masters of the female slaves and not to those of the husband". As for article XIII, it claims that "[i]f the husband married a free woman, their children, boys and girls, will be free like her no matter the status of their father but if the father is free and the mother is a slave, the children will be slaves like their mother". Thus, it is because she is deprived of a spouse who is her equal that the black woman must occupy the two functions of both mother and father in the family. After the abolition of slavery, French colonial authorities called for cheap and abundant labor, coming mainly from India, to replace the former slave population on the plantations. The arrival of Indian indentured servants (called Coolies), initially hired for five years, transformed the existing social, cultural and economic structure of the islands because Indians replaced the former African slaves at the bottom of the social ladder. Consequently, like the former slaves of African descent, Indian laborers experienced a new language, a new land, new standards and more importantly, they were subjected to the laws of the Black Code that were not originally applicable to them, but still prevailed even after the abolition. Therefore, what I call a Black Code mentality, articulated in the passage from African slavery to Indian indentureship, is what determines the relationships between men and women, of both African and Indian origins. The mentality extends to the post-slavery, colonial and postcolonial situations of these societies of the Caribbean and the Indian Ocean, until today. The purpose of my dissertation is to examine the persistence of a widespread monoparental pattern in these regions as a logical consequence of the application of the 1685/1724 Code Noir. My thesis underscores the rearticulation and renegotiation of the role of the father, of African and Indian descent, in both his family structure and his community of origin, as a function that was codified, legitimized and predetermined by the Black Code. ▼ Even though Sade’s reputation as an “athée exacerbé”¹ seems to dominate the critics, this dissertation argues that his atheism is not as obvious as it seems. Through an analysis of the correlation between language and religion in the marquis’ work, this study demonstrates that it is through his mistrust of language that Sade presents his ideas. While his libertines seem to profess the superiority of atheism, their discourse is undermined by their rhetoric. Through the use of sophisms, Sade is able to present the dispute between philosophers and apologists, which dominated the second half of the XVIII century, as sterile. The presentation of the libertines’ materialist ideas is equally problematic since the moral relativism they express is incompatible with the foundation of the Enlightenment’s ethical values. Moreover, Sade’s libertine novels profess the refusal of any acknowledgment of an ethic based solely on men, while his pessimism towards human nature puts him closer to the apologists. By undermining the foundations of any secular ethic, Sade places himself against both philosophers and apologists who, for once, agreed on the idea that virtue was the truest way to happiness. Sade’s novels therefore undermine both apologists and philosophers’ ideas by showing their contradictions. By presenting all of the prevailing religious thoughts of his time, Sade multiplies them in order to reduce them to binary notions that ultimately cancel each other out. Sade uses atheism to underscore the contradictions of his time. He presents a world in which all reference points have disappeared and in which every discourse seems to be a deception waiting to be exposed. Confronted with the unequivocal representations of both the philosophers and the apologists, whether triumphant or disparaging, Sade proves that one needs to push back with skepticism. The discourse on religion in Sade’s work could therefore be summed-up by the dying man: “You compose, you construct, you dream, you magnify and complicate; I sift, I simplify. ▼ This dissertation examines the figure of double alterity represented by foreign women living in metropolitan France, from the 18th to the 20th century. I argue that although these varied figures offer different trajectories, possess diverse origins, and have been described or described themselves through a variety of literary genres and non-literary genres; they share a common experience revealing unicity. My objectives are, first, to establish the outlines of this shared experience through the analysis of general trends and micro-events; and second, to explore what this analysis has to teach us about French society, past and present. The texts used are from Françoise de Graffigny, Claire de Duras, Marie-Antoinette, Flora Tristan, Marie Bashkirtseff, Leïla Sebbar, Djura, Fatima Gallaire and Maryse Condé. Part one consists of three chapters, in which I examine three separate axes of identity: the foreigner, the female foreigner, and the female writer. In part two, I explore the common experience of foreign women in France through the various stages of departing from the home country, arriving, staying, and finally leaving or staying in France, with a focus on deterritorialization, reterritorialization, adaptation, integration, discrimination and mobility. In my conclusion, I argue that the female foreigner is a theatrical figure, oscillating between a Brechtian and Aristotelian paradigm, and that both the French gaze and the post and neocolonial context contribute to create an erosion of her identity and lead to either a reinvention or reinforcement of her self. In addition, her writing encompasses two traits: a recollection of deception as well as feminist concerns. I argue that France possesses resilient postcolonial and nationalist mentalities, leading to a dynamic of trauma, failure and deception and I want to raise awareness on an atypical literary figure, one whose trajectory informs us about how French society has dealt with diversity and tells us that it has yet to find efficient ways to enable the vivre-ensemble. Ultimately, my dissertation sheds lights on the importance of what Derrida called the « unconditional hospitality » and our roles, as human, individual, and citizen to be accepting of any form of alterity.

▼ This Master’s thesis examines the ways in which the Holocaust continues to figure in French-Jewish autobiographical fiction. I examine texts by two leading authors, Georges Perec (1936-1982) and Philippe Grimbert (b.1948). I treat Perec as a first-generation survivor of the Holocaust as he was a child during the war and suffered the loss of both his parents, while Grimbert was born to Holocaust survivors shortly after the war and thus belongs to what has come to be known as the second generation. In both Perec’s W ou le souvenir d’enfance (1975) and Grimbert’s Un secret (2004) the body plays a central role as a site on which traumatic memory is inscribed. Trauma also determines the form and language of both novels, influencing not only the narrative structure but also the semantics utilized by the narrators. These post-Holocaust autofictions confront similar themes: both deal with the concept of the “unspeakable” and attempt to address the “emptiness” in the wake of the Holocaust and come to terms with the tremendous loss of life. Although thirty years separate Perec’s W and Grimbert’s Un secret, the overwhelming parallels between the two texts suggest that the trauma of the Holocaust has been passed on from one generation of survivors to the next through the disturbances of language. In my analysis, I illuminate common tropes that appear in these two works as instances of transgenerational traumatic transmission. The introduction provides a description of both works, a discussion of the autofictional genre and its use in both texts, and an overview of the trauma and literary theory with which I engage. The first chapter, “Traumatic Memory and its Inscription on the Body,” offers a close study of the body in both works. Both works juxtapose athletes who possess superior physical capabilities to weaker individuals who are marked by deformities, wounds or symbolic scars. I discuss the location of the narrators’ wounds in both texts and what this might suggest in psychoanalytic terms. I argue the location of the wounds, on the narrator’s mouth in W and on the narrator’s eyebrow in Un secret, are linked to what type of work these narrators undergo throughout both texts vis-à-vis trauma. Specifically, I use Freud’s Das Unheimlich to discuss the wound above the narrator’s eye in Un secret, linking it to the processes of testimony and remembrance. The second chapter, “Doubled Narrators and Narratives,” focuses on the various instances of doubling present in both works. I pay close attention to the doubled narrators, Gaspard Winckler in W, and Simon in Un secret, as well as to the presence of two alternative narratives in each text. I use Lacan’s theory of the mirror stage to support my argument that the doubling present in both texts provides a mirror that is crucial to the narrators’ processes of remembering, witnessing, and recording. ▼ My dissertation considers West African Francophone literature in its relationship with local traditional oral literature. This study examines the intertextual dialogue between the Zarma-Songhoï oral narrative, The Epic Of Askia Mohammed, and the modern fictional tale of Toula, by contemporary Zarma-Songhoï writer, Boubou Hama. The study emerges from the necessity to correct persistent and inappropriate appreciations of local ethnographic specificities in the current academic treatments of West African Francophone literature. Aimed as a modest contribution to the study of the relationship between oral traditions and modern literature in Francophone Sub-Saharan Africa, this study is divided in three parts. Part I considers Askia’s transgressions against fundamental cultural values as ground to disqualifying him as an epic hero. To that end, Chapter One of Part I engages the problematic of the affiliation of the African corpus to the epic genre. Chapter Two reviews Thomas Hale’s The Epic Of Askia Mohammed. Chapter Three and Chapter Four contextualize the textual analysis within the Zarma-Songhoï cultural base and against the relevant local ethnographic specificities. Chapter Five concludes Part I with the exploration of Askia’s dualing Islamic and Songhoï profile. In Part II, I present Boubou Hama’s Toula. This section examines, in Chapter One, the different versions of the Toula story and how Hama responds to them. Chapter Two contextualizes the legend of Toula within a tense geopolitical context where co-existent ethnic communities clash around the control of access to natural resources. In Part III, I explore Toula’s intertextual dialogue with the Zarma-Songhoï oral tradition. I propose that in response to The Epic Of Askia Mohammed, Boubou Hama’s Francophone text, Toula, operates a corrective ritual designed to cleanse the entire culture from the stain of Askia’s crimes, crime which represent the act of forsaking traditional values and laws. Ultimately, I argue that Hama’s relationship with not only the oral legend of Toulé but with other oral traditions, such as The Epic of Askia Mohammed and Wagadu, should be envisioned as a form of cultural resistance based upon a skillful integration of symbolic ethnographic elements that frame a dialogue with his own Zarma-Songhoï oral traditions. ▼ Ce mémoire se concentre sur la présence de l’environnement chez Michel Tremblay, plus précisément dans sa série de cinq romans intitulée Le gay savoir (La nuit des princes charmants (1995) ; Quarante-quatre minutes, quarante-quatre secondes (1997) ; Le cœur découvert (1986) ; Le cœur éclaté (1993) ; Hotel Bristol, New York, N.Y. (1999)). Dans cette œuvre, Tremblay présente les changements du milieu homosexuel des années 1950 aux années 1990 du point de vue de plusieurs personnages. Ces changements sont visibles dans la présence de l’environnement physique (les conditions météorologiques, notamment), ayant une forte influence sur l’action dans les romans. En ce sens, Tremblay attribue des caractéristiques humaines aux forces naturelles, ce qu’on appelle « l’erreur pathétique ». En plus des conditions météorologiques, l’état physique ainsi que l’atmosphère des lieux jouent un rôle également important. À travers l’époque en question, on voit un changement dans la manière dont Tremblay emploie l’environnement et qui va de pari avec les changements que l’on peut observer chez les personnages. Dans les années 1950, l’environnement reflète le monde « underground » qu’était le milieu gai tandis qu’à la fin des années 1990, on voit un portrait peint d’une manière bien différente, la sexualité des personnages occupant une position moins notable en faveur de la vie familiale et des rapports amoureux. Dans cette œuvre, Tremblay écrit sur des idées rarement abordées dans la littérature au vingtième siècle, celles de la vie quotidienne des hommes et femmes gai(e)s. Tremblay lui-même étant homosexuel, il est fort possible que cette œuvre soit au moins en partie autobiographique, les scénarios présentés des extraits de sa vie. L’auteur nous donne plusieurs indices : des similarités entre Tremblay et le personnage de Jean-Marc (également écrivain), la forte présence des quartiers du Plateau Mont-Royal et d’Outremont (son quartier natal et son quartier présent, respectivement), le voyage à Key West (où Tremblay passe l’hiver depuis les années 1990), parmi d’autres. Ces liens font en sorte que Le gay savoir est une œuvre centrale à la vie de l’auteur. Après une étude des cinq romans de deux perspectives (celle de la solitude et celle du rapprochement), on voit que l’environnement est central au développement de l’histoire et, plus précisément, de la visibilité de la communauté gaie à Montréal et ailleurs. This thesis centers around the use of environment in the works of Michel Tremblay, more specifically in his series of five novels Le gay savoir (Some Night My Prince Will Come (1995); Forty-four minutes, forty-four seconds (1997); The Heart Laid Bare (1986); The Heart Broken (1993); Bristol Hotel New York, NY (1999)). ▼ Marguerite de Valois reveals a self-portrait through the references found in her writings. Whether the references are in the third person, the second person (the addressee), or the first person (the “self’), Marguerite always chooses references which reflect several of her own personnality traits. By studying the precise references found in each of these categories, it is possible to develop a self-portrait of this sixteenth-century queen. An analysis of the references found in all of Marguerite de Valois’s writings is the focus of this study. Her writings include the Mémoire iustificatif pour Henri de Bourbon, the Discours docte et subtil dicte promptement par la Reyne Marguerite et envoyé a l’autheur des Secretz Moraux, the Mémoires (the most well-known of her writings), and particularly the Correspondance: 1569- 1615. Eliane Viennot has recently published a complete edition of Marguerite de Valois’s letters in the Correspondance, which had been largely unavailable to the public, and this edition presents a unique opportunity to study Marguerite de Valois and to create a far richer and more accurate portrait than that which would be found without the letters. In order to understand certain aspects of Marguerite’s writing style, and to begin a study of her identity, one must first study the precise references on an individual basis. In the third and second persons, the references are studied individually, and based upon the specific referent. These referents, or people, often those closest to Marguerite, are separated to make a distinct study of the references more feasible. References made to her mother, Catherine de Médicis; her friend, the Duchess of Uzès; her brother, Henri III; her husband, Henri IV; her lover, Champvallon; her younger brother, Frangçois de Valois; her nephew, Charles de Valois; and her friend, Brantôme are all studied apart from and in comparison to the others. By studying these distinct references, it becomes clear that they differ according to Marguerite’s relationship with the specific referent, as well as with the passage of time. For example, Marguerite uses direct references, especially when making a reference about or to her mother, whereas she chooses metaphorical references at other times, in particular, when writing about or to her lover. Apart from this, the study reveals rather quickly that each reference belongs in the context of the specific letter or story in which it is found and that it is very difficult, if not impossible, to study a reference completely separated from its context. Each example’s third, second and first persons work together to present Marguerite de Valois’s identity. In addition, the portrait depicted by this analysis changes throughout time. The development of this changing portrait is important in the study of sixteenth-century female writers and of French literature.
