Objet à multiples dimensions juridiques – le commerce, la concurrence, la fiscalité, l’environnement, le salariat, l’urbanisme, les droits et libertés fondamentaux, la valorisation du folklore et des traditions, la formation, la police, la construction notamment –, le tourisme est le terrain de synergie d’acteurs et d’activités publics et privés en lien direct ou indirect avec l’économique. Un lien de subordination ordonnée caractérisé par la privation, relativement motivée, de l’acteur économique d’un accès libre et direct au marché. C’est l’office du pouvoir économique public. Aux Antilles françaises, il est l’artisan d’un protectionnisme juridique, irradiant, variablement éloigné des nécessités économiques par opposition franche à une Caraïbe plus libérale et lacunaire, aux méthodes distorsives de concurrence, éminemment connectée aux nécessités économiques. Propulsées dans la modernité du droit par leur nationalité politique et ses corollaires – il est une identité de droits entre les Antilles françaises, la France continentale et, résolument, l’Union européenne –, les Antilles françaises sont, au niveau de leur région d’extraction, marginales. La conjuration, au moins partielle, de leur marginalité et, par ricochet, de celle de leur tourisme passerait par un changement de paradigme obtenu notamment d’un mouvement de décentration (« sortir de soi »). Ce dernier tire sa subsistance d’une société devenue mondialisée et interdépendante exhortant les petites économies au regroupement pertinent. Un mouvement qui, matériellement confronté à l’ombre menaçante de l’assimilation juridique dans le cas des Antilles françaises, requiert une fine précision. L’intégration régionale, dont la formule contractuelle – méthode alternative d’organisation de l’économie –, en ses force, intensité, diversité, flexibilité et massivité, est la figure de proue, sans prétendre à la panacée, emporte un effet décentriste. Il naît du contrat économique, plus justement de sa force normative. Porté par l’acteur économique public – l’Etat et/ou ses démembrements territoriaux –, le traité ou l’accord international vise notamment la conduite de politiques communes telle qu’en matière environnementale, les optimisation et fluidité circulatoires – des personnes, des biens, des services –, la réduction des écarts de développement, la protection de la concurrence. Porté par l’acteur économique privé – l’exemple des parties à un contrat de franchise –, sous couvert de la poursuite de la satisfaction d’intérêts particuliers, il organise des rapports d’économie confinant au transfert de technologie, au partage de marque, au renforcement de l’offre et de la demande, à la diminution du coût de la vie par la réalisation d’économie d’échelle, de gamme notamment. Maîtrisé, l’effet décentriste de l’intégration régionale pourrait, dans une certaine mesure, constituer un outil efficace pour une économie durable du tourisme des Antilles françaises en marge ou, quand cela est possible, en alternative aux procédés traditionnels.

Une étude des facteurs influençant la composition et la répartition spatiale des abondances algales dans les communautés récifales des Antilles françaises et plus spécifiquement de Guadeloupe a été réalisée. Le rôle joué par les oursins diadème est plus particulièrement étudié. Les principaux compartiments des communautés récifales et les facteurs d'influence susceptibles de jouer un rôle dans la régulation du compartiment algal ont été dimensionnés sur 22 stations des Antilles françaises. Pour cela plusieurs indicateurs ont été testés. Après une description de chaque compartiment biotique (algues, herbivores, prédateurs), une recherche des facteurs influençant les caractéristiques du compartiment algal a été menée à trois échelles spatiales, à l'aide d'analyses statistiques non paramétriques, notamment des analyses canoniques des redondances et des correspondances. Puis, une recherche des facteurs influençant la répartition des oursins diadème a été également menée. Si les deux guildes d'herbivores étudiées (poissons et oursins diadème) ont un impact significatif sur l'abondance de gazon algal, seuls les poissons herbivores ont la capacité d'exercer cette influence à l'échelle des récifs de Guadeloupe et cette influence ne s'étend pas aux autres catégories algales. Notamment les phéophycées. A l'échelle de l'ensemble des îles étudiées, les analyses effectuées n'ont pas permis de mettre en évidence l'influence des herbivores sur la régulation des abondances algales. Les oursins diadèmes sont en faible densité dans les iles antillaises étudiées. Plusieurs facteurs susceptibles de participer à leur répartition en taille et en abondance sont identifiés.

A study of factors influencing the composition and spatial distribution of algal abundance in the French Caribbean reef communities and more specifically in Guadeloupe was conducted. The role of diadema sea urchins was particularly studied. For that, 22 stations in the French Antilles were selected and several indicators tested. After a description of each biotic compartment (algae, herbivore, predators), a search for factors influencing the characteristics of the algal compartment was conducted at three spatial scale, using non-parametric statistical analyses, including canonical correspondence analyses (cca) and redundancy analyses (rda). Then a search for the factors influencing the distribution of diadema sea urchins was also conducted. If the two guilds of herbivores (diadema sea urchin and fish) have a significant impact on the abundance of algal turf, only herbivorous fish was found to have an influence in the reefs of Guadeloupe and that influence was not observed on other algal groups, including phaeophyceae. At the scale of all the islands, the analyses did not enable to show the influence of herbivores in the regulation of algal abundance. The density of sea urchins was found to be low in the studied sites. Several factors likely to influence their distribution in size and their abundance were identified.

Cette thèse a pour but de contribuer à une meilleure compréhension de la tuberculose (TB) et desmycobactéries non-tuberculeuses dans la Caraïbe. La tuberculose a hanté l’humanité depuisplusieurs millénaires et reste de nos jours une des maladies infectieuses faisant le plus de victimeschaque année (1,5 millions de décès en 2013). La connaissance de l’épidémiologie de la tuberculoseest essentielle afin de concevoir des programmes de lutte anti-TB adaptés aux spécificitésrégionales et donc plus efficaces. Dans cette optique, la première partie de ce travail fourni un suivià long-terme de la résistance aux antituberculeux observée en Guadeloupe, Martinique et Guyanefrançaise ainsi qu’un aperçu de la diversité génétique et de la résistance aux antituberculeux dansla Caraïbe. Les données montrent une baisse graduelle de la fréquence des infections causées pardes souches résistantes parmi les nouveaux cas de TB dans les départements français d’Amérique.En ce qui concerne la Caraïbe, des différences marquées ont été observées entre les différentsterritoires, ce qui semble refléter le passé historique de cette région.La deuxième partie est consacrée à la phylogénie et l’évolution de M. tuberculosis, étudié à l’aide dedivers marqueurs génétiques comme spoligotypes, LSP, SNP et MIRU-VNTR. Les profils MIRUVNTR(format 12-loci) ont été étudiés afin de déterminer leur utilité comme marqueurphylogénétique. Il a été montré que ce marqueur est adapté pour retracer la phylogénie ducomplexe M. tuberculosis et que la précision du classement basé sur les MIRUs est supérieure àcelle du classement basé sur les spoligotypes. De plus, la technique MIRU-VNTR permetégalement d’observer la diversification évolutive d’une souche de M. tuberculosis au cours del’infection ou alors d’identifier des patients infectés par plusieurs souches de M. tuberculosis enmême temps. Les deux phénomènes ont été observés au cours de ce travail de thèse et les casconcernés sont décrits dans ce deuxième chapitre.Enfin, un premier aperçu de la diversité des mycobactéries non-tuberculeuses isolées desprélèvements cliniques en Guadeloupe, Martinique et Guyane est présenté dans la troisième partiede ce travail. Des différences marquées dans la fréquence d’isolement de certaines espèces ont puêtre observées entre les trois départements français d’Amérique. M. intracellulare par exemple étaitsignificativement plus abondant en Guadeloupe. Cependant l’existence d’une niche écologiquespécifique à cette île n’a pas pu être mise en évidence. La problématique de l’identification desmycobactéries non-tuberculeuses est abordée également à travers une étude rétrospective del’utilisation de hsp65-PRA pour l’identification des mycobactéries dans un laboratoire de routinemais aussi sous forme d’un travail prospectif visant à la mise en place d’un protocoled’identification de mycobactéries non-tuberculeuses avec MALDI-TOF MS.

Les Antilles françaises constituent un contexte qui est à appréhender sous les différents traits qui les caractérisent : une approche géologique et géographique, historique et économique, géopolitique ou encore, ethnique et linguistique, culturelle et magico-religieuse. Une prégnance émane de ce lieu et se fait ressentir dans les arts plastiques : le fragment et le manque.Les démarches de six artistes, concernés par cette étude, s’inscrivent dans ce contexte insulaire. Ils transposent dans leurs œuvres, selon différentes modalités, les problématiques qui préoccupent l’Archipel des Antilles. Trois artistes de la Guadeloupe : Michel Rovelas, Christian Bracy, François Piquet, et trois artistes de la Martinique : Ernest Breleur, Christian Bertin, Chantal Charron, sont étudiés, et leurs travaux analysés selon leurs données plastiques, iconiques, procédurales et sémantiques. Ces plasticiens qui prennent des libertés vis-à-vis des codes traditionnels de la représentation, abandonnent le principe d’imitation de la réalité. Ils privilégient une esthétique du fragment dont le déclencheur est la blès (blesse), l’insondable blessure historique. Le corps archipélique, à l’insulaire structure, en est l’objet et le sujet d’expression. Il est la figure métaphorique du monde créole.Ces « renifleur[s] d’existence »1 effectuent un travail de mémoire et d’identité dont les fondations résident dans une accumulation de faits tragiques et troublants : la traite, l’esclavage, la période coloniale, la départementalisation. Il s’agit d’une mémoire lacunaire que l’art tend à sonder.

The French West Indies constructs a context which has to be apprehended from different characteristics: a geological and geographical approach, as well as a historical, economic, geopolitical, ethnic, linguistic, cultural and magico-religious approach. A resonance emanates from this place which is felt in the plastic arts: fragment and incompleteness.The approaches of six artists involved in this study subscribe to this insular context. They transpose into their works, according to different modalities, the problems that concern the French West Indies archipelago. Three artists from Guadeloupe: Michel Rovelas, Christian Bracy, François Piquet, and three artists from Martinique: Ernest Breleur, Christian Bertin, Chantal Charron, are studied, and their work analyzed according to their plastic arts, iconic, procedural and semantic information.These plastic artists, who take liberties with respect to the traditional codes of representation, abandon the principle of imitation of reality. They favor an aesthetic of “the fragment” whose generator is “la blès” (wound), the unfathomable historical wound. The archipelagic body, with an insular structure is the object and the subject of expression. It is the metaphorical figure of the Creole world.These “searchers of existence”1 perform a work of memory and identity whose foundations lie in an accumulation of tragic and disturbing facts: slave trade, slavery, the colonial period and departmentalization. La CLD est un composé toxique qui (i) pollue plus de 15% des surfaces agricoles de la Guadeloupe et de la Martinique, (ii) résiste à la dégradation biotique et abiotique, (iii) s’accumule le long de la chaine alimentaire et dont la disparition des sols par lessivage est estimée à plusieurs centaines d’années. Les animaux de rente originaires de ces zones polluées sont contaminés et l’état de l’art a révélé un manque d’information évident sur le comportement de la CLD dans l’organisme de ces animaux et moins de dix publications sur leur décontamination. Deux protocoles expérimentaux ont été conduits sur des caprins mâles en croissance afin de caractériser le comportement de la CLD dans l’organisme des ruminants non lactants et de développer des méthodes optimisant leurs processus de décontamination. Les résultats ont montré que (i) les chevreaux éliminaient plus de 70% de leur CLD tissulaire après 3 à 4 semaines de décontamination et (ii) ni leur état d’engraissement initial ni l’ajout de charbon actif ou d’huile de paraffine dans leur alimentation ne modifiaient ces taux d’excrétion. Ces études ont également montré que la CLD se comportait différemment des autres polluants lipophiles car sa concentration tissulaire (exprimée sur la base de la matière grasse) était plus importante dans le foie et les muscles des animaux contaminés que dans leurs tissus gras. Ces résultats soulèvent des questions sur les mécanismes à l'origine de la distribution tissulaire de la CLD, son métabolisme et sur l’interaction de ce dernier avec le cycle entéro-hépatique. La compréhension de ces processus permettra de mieux ajuster les stratégies de décontamination pour les rendre plus efficaces

Chlordecone (CLD) is a toxic molecule which (i) contaminates more than 15% of agricultural land in Guadeloupe and Martinique islands, (ii) resists to biotic and abiotic degradation, (iii) accumulates along the food chain and whose the disappearance by soil leaching is estimated at several hundred years. The contamination of livestock in polluted areas is a health, social and economic issue. A literature review on CLD revealed a crying lack of information on its behavior in livestock’s organism and currently, there are less than ten studies which deal with livestock’s decontamination. Two experimental protocols were developed to characterize the behavior of CLD in ruminants’ organism and to evaluate methods that can optimize the decontamination processes of these animals. Results showed that all animals have eliminated more than 70% of Chlordecone in 3 to 4 weeks and neither the initial kids’ body fatness nor the addition of activated carbon or the addition of paraffin oil in the diet during the decontamination period altered these rates of excretion. Following these studies, the lipophilic behavior of CLD in animals is, also, questioned because the results showed that the concentrations of this pollutant, expressed on the fat matter basis, were higher in the liver and the muscles than in the peri-renal fat. Les efforts récents portés sur l’archéologie des périodes historiques dans la Caraïbe permettent de se pencher sur la vie quotidienne des colons européens et des populations serviles dans les Petites Antilles françaises. Les vestiges fauniques apportent un éclairage complémentaire aux données textuelles pour documenter l’adaptation de ces nouveaux arrivants à un environnement insulaire qui leur était inconnu. L’étude archéozoologique a porté sur un ensemble de 27 sites de Guadeloupe, Martinique et Saint-Martin, couvrant la période de la colonisation européenne (première moitié du XVIIe siècle) aux temps qui ont suivi l’abolition de l’esclavage. Treize habitations, douze sites urbains, un atelier production de chaux et une épave de goélette ont livré un corpus de 18 101 restes identifiés, qui témoignent de l’exploitation de 176 espèces de vertébrés et d’invertébrés. Les espèces importées, en particulier le boeuf, les caprinés (mouton et chèvre) et le cochon, indiquent que les colons ont apporté avec eux les pratiques européennes. Néanmoins, la présence de 53 espèces de poissons et de 90 espèces d’invertébrés marins indiquent que les populations coloniales ont rapidement su exploiter la richesse de leur nouvel environnement. La faible présence de la morue dans les assembles a été remarqué, contrastant avec l’importance de ce taxon suggérée par les sources historiques.

Recent efforts in the archeology of historical periods in the Caribbean allow investigating the daily life of European settlers and servile populations in the French Lesser Antilles. Faunal remains provide an additional insight to textual data to document the adaptation of these newcomers to an insular environment that was unknown to them. The archaeozoological study focused on a set of 27 sites in Guadeloupe, Martinique and Saint-Martin, covering the period of European colonization (first half of the 17th century) to the times that followed the abolition of slavery. Thirteen habitations, twelve urban sites, a lime production workshop and a schooner wreckage yielded a corpus of 18,101 identified remains, which testify to the exploitation of 176 species of vertebrates and invertebrates. Imported species, especially beef, caprines (sheep and goat) and pig, indicate that settlers brought with them European practices. Nevertheless, the presence of 53 species of fish and 90 species of marine invertebrates indicates that colonial populations have been able to exploit the richness of their new environment. The low presence of cod in the assemblages was noted, contrasting with the importance of this taxon suggested by historical sources.

Aucune influence de la profondeur n'a é;étrouvée sur l'abondance totale des dinoflagellés benthiques ; cependant les genres Ostreopsis et GambiericLscusétaient principalement abondants en surface, alors que le genre Coolia était présent plus en profondeur.L'approche d'écologie trophique concernait le lien trophique entre dinoflagellés benthiques toxiqueset méiofaune (Chapitre 1). Les transferts au sein des réseaux trophiques de phycotoxines synthétisées par lesdinoflagellés benthiques toxiques sont généralement étudiés chez les organismes de grande taille, délaissantles organismes de μeLile Laille qui sulll pourtant en contact direct avec les microalgues. Au cours de cetteétude, une attention particulière a été portée aux copépodes harpacticoïdes qui composent ia méiofaune.Cette étude expérimentale, par marquage des microalgues aux isotopes stables, s'est focalisée sur lescopépodes harpacticoïdes et a permis de mesurer le taux d'ingestion d'Amphidinium sp. et d'Ostreopsis sp ..Cette étude démontre que les organismes de la méiofaune peuvent constituer une voie d'entrée des toxinessynthétisées par les dinoflagellés benthiques dans les réseaux trophiques.

The distribution of benthic toxiï rlinofüeefü1tes is 1111known in (Juadeloupe and Martinique even if at theCaribbean basin spatial scale, those microalgae are responsible for serious poisoning such as ciguatera.During this thesis, the ecology of benthic toxic dinoflagellates μreseul was sLudieJ using: spatio-temporalstudies (Chapters 1, 2, 3) and a trophic ecology approach (Chapter 4).First, 27 sites were explored to describe the spatial distribution of benthic dinoflagellatf's prPsf'nt inGuadeloupe and Martinique (Chapter 1). Only the most abundant macrophytes (biological substrates ofbenthic dinoflagellates) at the different sites were considered. ln this study, 161 samples were analyzed and 7times more taxie benthic dinoflagellates were found in Guadeloupe than in Martinique. The genus Ostreopsisdominated the benthic dinoflagellate community in both islands, although this trend has only rarely beenfound in the Caribbean basin.Then, 3 sites per department were chosen in order to set up a monthly monitoring of benthicdinoflagellates abundances duringl8 months (Chapter 2). The sites selected i) had a high abundance ofbenthic toxic dinoflagellates and ii) were identified as potentially dangerous by the Agence Régionale de laSanté. During this study, 927 samples of macrophytes were analyzed and 5 times more benthic toxicdinoflagellates were found in Guadeloupe than in Martinique. ▼ The hierarchical levels at which resource selection occurs can have important consequences for individual and population energy budgets and structure the impacts of a forager on its ecosystem. Assessing factors affecting resource selection of large marine herbivores across scales is important because of their potentially large impacts on seagrass community dynamics and historical and current changes in their population sizes and those of their potential predators. I explored the factors (predation risk, resource abundance, quality and identity) affecting resource use of large marine herbivores (green turtles, Chelonia mydas) from the scale of habitat patches to forage species within patches. I used a combination of in-water surveys, aerial drone video transects, baited camera surveys, and seagrass community and nutrient content analyses to provide insights into resource use by turtles in multiple ecological contexts. In Abaco, The Bahamas I found relatively intact shark populations, including apex predators, relative to other parts of the Caribbean. In the context of healthy predator populations in Abaco, I tested a priori predictions rooted in Ideal Free Distribution (IFD) theory. Green turtles off Abaco deviated from predictions of an IFD determined by the standing stocks of seagrass. Instead, distributions are consistent with predictions of the foraging arena hypothesis with turtles largely restricted to safe habitat patches and selecting locations within these where seagrass N content is relatively high. Marine invasive species can have detrimental effects on coastal ecosystems and economies. Therefore, understanding the effects of, and factors influencing the rate of spread of the invasive seagrass Halophila stipulacea in the Caribbean is important. In the French West Indies (Guadeloupe, Martinique and St. Martin), I investigated foraging preferences for native versus invasive seagrass species and whether green turtles might facilitate or attenuate the invasion through their choice of habitats and feeding patterns. Green turtle distributions were correlated with native seagrass distributions. Also, despite similar nutrient contents, turtles preferred feeding on native seagrasses irrespective of their relative abundance within a patch. These results suggest that, as predicted by the Enemy Release Hypothesis, green turtles likely facilitate the invasion and spread of the invasive seagrass that may reduce energy flow into turtle populations. Le plan de restauration des tortues marines aux Antilles françaises a été validé par le Conseil National pour la Conservation de la Nature en 2006. Les captures accidentelles dans les filets de fond, i.e. les trémail, folle et filet droit, sur le plateau continental constituent la principale menace. Des filets faisant varier la hauteur, le maillage et l’inclinaison ont été comparés à des filets professionnels au cours de 226 pêches expérimentales. Le trémail est peu sélectif. Des filets à profil bas permettent d’obtenir des rendements comparables et réduiraient les captures de tortues. Les captures accidentelles sont plus abondantes dans les trémails et les folles. Les pêches à longs temps de calée provoquent plus de 90% de taux de mortalité de tortues et augmentent les quantités de rejets. Près de deux milliers de tortues seraient capturées chaque année aux Antilles françaises, avec une mortalité avoisinant les 60%. Les tortues adultes pêchées l’ont été en période de nidification et les tortues dites résidentes sont dans la grande majorité des juvéniles ou sub-adultes, cause de la surexploitation locale passée et signe de populations non stables. La menace « pêche » est d’autant plus importante qu’elle touche les femelles nidifiantes, meilleurs espoirs de rétablissement des stocks. En étroite collaboration participative avec les professionnels de la mer, la protection des tortues et des ressources marines passerait par une réduction de la hauteur des filets et de leurs temps de calée et l’interdiction totale ou partielle de ceux à mailles larges.

The national marine turtles recovery plan in FWI was adopted in 2006 by the National council for the nature conservancy. The bottom nets bycatch, i.e. the trammel, folle and gill nets, on the continental shelf are the main threat. Experimental nets with different heights, meshing and incline was compared to professional ones during 226 experimental trials. Trammel net is non selective. Low profile nets maintain a similar productivity and reduce the turtle bycatch. Trammel and folle nets cause more bycatch. The long soak times lead to more than 90 % of turtles mortality and more discards. Each year, about two thousands of turtles would be captured in FWI, with a mortality rate closed to 60 %. The mature turtles were captured during the nesting season and the resident ones are mostly juveniles or sub-adults, because of the local past overexploitation and indicator of non stable populations. The “fishery” threat is particularly important it affect nesting females, best stocks recovery hope. Closely to the marine professionals, the marine turtle and resources protection would be effective thanks to the reduction of the height and soak times nets and the total or partial ban of large meshing size nets.

À travers le cas des Antilles françaises, cette thèse examine les transformations de l’État liées au passage de la colonie au département. Dans le cadre d’une histoire du politique, elle entend se centrer sur l’étude du fonctionnement de l’État dans une optique large et transversale, en interaction avec les acteurs locaux, et à l’intersection d’autres champs historiographiques comme ceux du fait colonial ou de la Guerre froide. Son originalité tient à l’inscription de cette problématique de départementalisation dans diverses échelles d’analyse, permettant de confronter les contextes locaux, nationaux et mondiaux sur une période de quatre décennies, entre la réorganisation des structures impériales au lendemain de la Seconde Guerre mondiale et la mise en œuvre de la décentralisation en France au début des années 1980. L’objectif de la thèse est à la fois d’appréhender l’ensemble des facteurs internes et externes à l’appareil d’État qui rythment la chronologie du processus de départementalisation et de caractériser la gestion des départements d’Outre-mer par l’État.

This PHD analyzes the consequences of the transformation of the French West Indies colonies into “departements”. It is focused on political history and centered on the functioning of the State Administration from a wide and cross-cultural point of view, taking into account the interactions between the State Administration and local players. This PHD is at the crossroads of many historiographic fields such as Colonial History or Cold War History. The originality of this PHD lies in the various scales that it encompasses, making it possible to compare local, regional and world issues over forty years, between the end of War World II and the beginning of the decentralization process in France. The purpose of this PHD is to assess the set of internal and external factors inside the State Administration which have an influence on the chronology of the “departementalization” process. It is also to typify the management of overseas French West Indies initiated by the French state.

L'objectif était d'évaluer le rôle de différents facteurs de risque dans la survenue des cancers des voies aéro-digestives supérieures (VADS) aux Antilles françaises. Dans un premier temps, nous avons utilisé les données d'une enquête transversale sur la santé pour décrire la prévalence du tabagisme, de la consommation d'alcool et de l'obésité, et mis en évidence des disparités sociales. Nous avons ensuite analysé les données d'une étude cas-témoins menée en Martinique et en Guadeloupe entre 2013 et 2016, comprenant 145 cas de cancers des VADS et 405 témoins. Une prévalence élevée d'infection orale par le papillomavirus (HPV) a été mise en évidence, avec une distribution par génotype spécifique, en particulier une faible fréquence d’HPV16. L’infection orale aux HPV à haut risque (Hr-HPV) était associée à une augmentation significative du risque de cancer des VADS. Les consommations de tabac et d'alcool augmentaient fortement le risque de cancer des VADS, avec un effet combiné synergique. Un faible indice de masse corporelle (IMC), des antécédents familiaux de cancer des VADS, et plusieurs activités professionnelles étaient également associés à un risque accru. L’utilisation du préservatif diminuait le risque, indépendamment de l’infection à Hr-HPV. Chez les femmes, un âge précoce aux premières règles était associé à une diminution du risque. Les consommations de thé, de café, de fruits et de légumes n'étaient pas associées au cancer des VADS. Dans la population, la majorité des cas de cancers des VADS étaient attribuables au tabagisme (62,5 %) et à l'alcool (55,4 %). Environ 14 % des cas étaient attribuables à l’infection orale à Hr-HPV, 11 % à un faible IMC, 27 % à la profession et 7 % aux antécédents familiaux. Étant donné l’impact prépondérant des facteurs modifiables, de nombreuses opportunités de prévention des cancers des VADS se présentent dans cette population.

The objective was to assess the potential influence of a large spectrum of risk factors on head and neck cancer (HNC) development in the French West Indies (FWI). As a first step, we used data from a cross-sectional health survey to describe the prevalence of tobacco smoking, alcohol drinking and obesity. This work highlighted significant social disparities in these risk factors in the population. We then analysed data from a population-based case-control study conducted in Martinique and Guadeloupe between 2013 and 2016, including 145 cases of HNC and 405 controls. The study revealed a high prevalence of oral infection with human papillomavirus (HPV) in the population, and a specific distribution of HPV genotypes. HPV52 was the most prevalent type and HPV16 was found in only 4% of cases. Tobacco smoking and alcohol drinking increased the risk of HNC, with a synergetic combined effect. High risk HPV (Hr-HPV) was associated with a significant increase in HNC risk, particularly in non-smokers and non-drinkers. Elevated risks of HNC were found in several occupations. La transformation sociale des Antilles françaises qui se produit après la Seconde Guerre mondiale résulte d'un processus interactif historique. Celui-ci se produit entre 1946 et 1961 autour des nouvelles dynamiques de l'après-guerre. Il s'agit du statut départemental, de la décolonisation avec l'explosion des conflits sociaux, de la politique publique de "développement économique et social" avec la planification dans les départements d'outre-mer, et de l'accroissement démographique avec l'apparition d'une nouvelle génération "sociologique". C'est précisément cette interaction qui est à l'origine du nouveau type de société qui émerge aux Antilles à partir des années 1960 sans pour autant que leur structure sociale coloniale ne soit bouleversée. Cette construction qui prend le nom commun de "Départementalisation" est paradoxale car elle va générer des frustrations sociales "modernes", tout en maintenant des frustrations anciennes issues de la société de plantation. En induisant ainsi le passage d'un monde d'"habitation" à un monde de consommation, cette construction permet de comprendre un peu mieux, le maintien, au début du XXIe siècle, d'un malaise social latent dans ces départements en dépit d'une amélioration sensible et générale des conditions de vie.

The social change which takes place in the French West Indies after the Second World War ensues from a historical interactive process. It occurs between 1946 and 1961, within the frame of the new dynamic fostered in the aftermath of the war. Here we refer to he new political status of Department, the outbreak of social conflicts during the process of decolonization, the public policies and the planning of "the economic and social development" of the overseas departements. The dynamic also includes the population growth with the birth of a new generation from the sociological point of view. The aforementioned interaction instils the new type of society emerging in the French West Indies since the 1960's, without drastically changing their colonial social structure. This transformation named "Departmentalization" seems paradoxical because it will generate "modern" social frustrations, while maintaining existing frustrations that stemmed from the plantation society. this process led to the transition from a slave society to a consumer society. It allows us to understand the persistence of a latent social unrest in these departments, in spite of th overall significant improvement of the living conditions during the early twentieth century.

▼ This work is a social and cultural history of the participation of enslaved and free Blacks in the Seven Years’ War in British America. It is, as well, an intellectual history of the impact of Blacks’ wartime actions upon conceptions of race, slavery, and imperial identity in the British Atlantic world. In addition to offering a fresh analysis of the significance of Britain’s arming of Blacks in the eighteenth century, it represents the first sustained inquiry into Blacks’ experience of this global conflict. It contends that, though their rhetoric might indicate otherwise, neither race nor enslaved status in practice prevented Britons from arming Blacks. In fact, Blacks played the most essential role in martial endeavors precisely where slavery was most fundamental to society. The exigencies of worldwide war transformed a local reliance upon black soldiers for the defense of particular colonies into an imperial dependence upon them for the security of Britain’s Atlantic empire. The events of the Seven Years’ War convinced many Britons that black soldiers were effective and even indispensable in the empire’s tropical colonies, but they also confirmed that not all Blacks could be trusted with arms. This work examines “Tacky’s revolt,” during which more than a thousand slaves exploited the wartime diffusion of Jamaica’s defensive forces to rebel, as a battle of the Seven Years’ War. The experience of insecurity and insurrection during the conflict caused some Britons to question the imperial value of the institution of slavery and to propose that Blacks be transformed from a source of vulnerability as slaves to the key to the empire’s strength in the southern Atlantic as free subjects. While martial service offered some Blacks a means to gain income, skills, a sense of satisfaction, autonomy, community, and even (though rarely) freedom, the majority of Blacks did not personally benefit from their contributions to the British war effort. Despite the pragmatic martial antislavery rhetoric that flourished postwar, in the end the British armed Blacks to perpetuate slavery, not to eradicate it, and an ever more regimented reliance upon black soldiers became a lasting legacy of the Seven Years’ War. L’historiographie a souvent négligé la place occupée par les migrants francophones au sein de la jeune république américaine, se bornant à suivre l’itinéraire des exilés politiques les plus célèbres, bannis par la Révolution Française ou la Restauration, ou celui des utopistes rêvant d’instaurer une société nouvelle au Nouveau Monde. Au cœur de la Jeune Amérique confrontée à l’épineux problème de l’esclavage, à l’agonie des empires coloniaux et à la naissance de l’esprit d’entreprise et du capitalisme, ils furent nombreux à tenter la fortune outre atlantique entre 1783 et 1815, établissant dans le corridor créole de puissants liens commerciaux, culturels et religieux entre côte Est, Nouvelle-Orléans, Antilles et espace atlantique. Tel est l’objet de la présente réflexion qui emprunte la voie ouverte par l’histoire atlantique, et propose, en tirant parti de la correspondance et des ressources archivistiques, une écriture novatrice de l’histoire des migrations commerciales francophones entre Pittsburgh et Louisville à l’époque des révolutions atlantiques.

Historiography often neglects the part of Francophone migrants in the young American republic, merely following the route of the most famous political exiles banished by the French Revolution and the Restoration, or the Utopians dreaming to establish a new society in the New World. In the Early Republic faced with the thorny problem of slavery, the agony of colonial empires and the birth of entrepreneurship and capitalism, many migrants tried fortune beyond the Atlantic Ocean, between 1783 and 1815, establishing in the “Creole corridor” powerful commercial, cultural and religious ties between east coast, New Orleans, West Indies and Atlantic space. This is the purpose of this discussion that borrows the path opened by the Atlantic history, and proposes, through the study of correspondence and archival resources, an innovative history of francophone business migrations from Pittsburgh to Louisville in the age of the Atlantic Revolutions.
