▼ In In Defense of Anarchism, Robert Paul Wolff claims that a legitimate authority cannot exist, as any authority will necessarily prevent its subject’s autonomy. Jospeh Raz, in contrast, argues that a legitimate authority can exist and should support its subjects’ autonomy. In the argumentation to defend their conclusions, both focus on formulating their conceptions of (legitimate) authority. In this paper, I argue that the difference in their conceptions of autonomy is the basis of the disagreement in Wolff’s and Raz’s conclusions. After a comparison of the two conceptions and the role autonomy plays in the authors’ argumentations, I conclude that Raz’s conclusion is the more plausible of the two.

▼ Prostitution, drug addiction, and their surrounding issues have long been topics of political, theoretical, and practical import. Furthermore, they offer a particularly insightful lens through which to interrogate concepts of
freedom and justice. This paper is a qualitative ethnographic study that examines the experiences of women previously involved in drug addiction and street prostitution, who are now living and working in a recovery community. In this dissertation, I discuss some of the many material, social, and political conditions that influence women’s
freedom. Furthermore, I explore community members’ understandings of the concept of
freedom, and the ways in which their
freedom is affected by the recovery community of which they are a part.

▼ This thesis dwells on the existence of
freedom in the life of people in a Brazilian favela (shantytown). The ethnography presents the dance of
freedom with the full intensity of a carnivalesque. The exploration also ponders the existence of metafreedom (proposed as the
freedom necessary for the expression of
freedom) as a form of control over iterations of
freedom. At the same time that it argues for a radical carnivalization of narratives of
freedom, it flirts with the very limits of
freedom as a concept and as a practice. One of the main contributions is in avoiding a reductive analysis of the concept of
freedom, narrowing it to a simpler or alternative notion. Instead, the project presents the complex relations of five experienced objects – livre; livre-arbítrio; libertação; liberada and liberdade – to one another and to the life situations in which they come to existence in Favela da Rocinha in Rio de Janeiro. In methodological terms, the research argues that one of the ways to approach the topic of
freedom from an ethnographic perspective is through the occurrences of linguistic expressions of
freedom as objects that can be empirically experienced and registered by the ethnographer. It is mainly by making the complexities of
freedom visible ethnographically, by tracing freedoms in their daily existence and by connecting these different kinds of
freedom to diverse lived experiences and social contexts that the thesis advances the debate on
freedom. The discussion of a carnivalesque of
freedom in a Brazilian favela is also a call for a reflection on what ethnography as an empirical method, and anthropology more broadly, can offer to the understanding of
freedom.

▼ The belief in free will is something we are entitled to hold despite what determinism says. This notion however cannot be adequately explained or defended by traditional accounts of
freedom amongst which, compatibilist and libertarian perspectives dominate the field of inquiry. I argue that an alternative approach is necessary to capture the full implications of what
freedom as an idea contains and to establish this idea's validity, though one which exhibits none of the usual extravagances which philosophers so often pursue in their attempts at justification.

▼ The Constitution of Zambia, which is the supreme law of the Land, does recognize and guarantee the freedom of expression under Article 20. The constitution, under Article 20(i) provides that:-"Except with his own consent, no person shall be hindered on the enjoyment of his freedom of expression, that is to say, freedom to hold opinions without interference, freedom to impart and communicate ideas and information without interference, whether the communication be to the public generally or to any person or class of persons, and freedom from interference with his correspondence. "The preamble to the Zambian Constitution declares that Zambia will 'uphold the values of democracy, transparency, accountability and good governance.' Transparency, accountability and good governance are only possible where there is freedom of expression and the right of the public to know is assured. Freedom of expression includes not only freedom to hold opinions without interference, but also freedom to receive ideas and information, and to impart and communicate ideas and information without interference. "Freedom of expression is the life-blood of a democracy." It has been observed that "democratization is closely tied to freedom of expression, together with that of assembly and association."The value of free expression is that it assures the individual of self-fulfillment and it also serves as a means of attaining the truth. Free speech in addition, creates a method of security for the participation of the members of a society in political and social decision
making and it further serves as a means of maintaining the balance between stability and change in a society. In a democratic society, such as Zambia, what is at stake is the fundamental principle of the people's right to know. Since development is tied to good governance, which includes the freedom of expression, government has a duty to ensure that this freedom is guaranteed. This study shall consist of four chapters. The first chapter will outlines what the freedom of expression is, its sources and its nature. The second chapter will look at the development of the freedom of expression in Zambia, hi the third chapter, a comparison will be drawn between laws that derogate or restrict the freedom of expression and those that enhance the exercise of this freedom. A general conclusion on whether there are enough laws in Zambia to secure and facilitate the exercise of the freedom of expression will make the fourth and final chapter of this work and recommendations will be made in the same chapter.

▼ This thesis interrogates the social/political stakes in three nonfiction narratives of life and death: Jon Krakauer's Into the Wild, Peter Gzowski's The Sacrament and John and Jean Silverwood's Black Wave. An analysis of Nietzsche's concept of "
freedom as responsibility," as developed by contemporary theorists of
freedom and the body, especially Wendy Brown and Judith Butler, provides the ground for this theoretical examination. Additionally, Fred Alford's consideration of "
freedom with" and Laurence Gonzales's interrogation of the conditions of survival help delimit this site of contest. Each of the texts is critiqued in terms of its engagement with
freedom as a practice of responsibility grounded in recognition of mutual vulnerability and enacted through a contest for meaning.

▼ Ethiopian media industry is hampered by various factors, one of which is the influence coming from political authorities. The constitution of the country has clearly enshrined freedoms of speech and of the press. However, on the ground, these freedoms have not been translated the way they are provided for in the constitution.
This study is aimed at evaluating the presence of this influence of political authorities that is seen as hampering the independent political news reporting of two national Amharic newspapers -‘Addis Zemen’ and ‘The Reporter’. To achieve this, the study has made a comparison on the variations, degree, particular nature and relative impact of the influences on the two papers.
The study will show that the influence of political authorities, though unavoidable in any part of the world, is seriously damaging the political news reporting of Ethiopian media. This in particular is constraining the independent role of the state owned ‘Addis Zemen.’ The private owned ‘The Reporter’, on the other hand, though still impacted by the influence, is performing better and is trying to contribute to the national democratizations efforts.
Generally speaking, the study has identified this influence of political officials as a hindrance on the constitutional Freedoms of Speech and of the Press, as well as on the public’s right to know.

▼ Freedom of information is the touchstone of all rights. Obviously, free press is one of the strong
and relevant institutions that play major in the promotion of this important. It is very much
inconceivable to assert free press without democracy. These curial instruments- democracy and
free press- , which is highly regarded in the promotion of
freedom of information, are recognized
by the constitution of Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia (FDRE). However, the practice of
free flow of information is not good enough to ensure citizens‟ right to know, participate in
decision making process and make informed decisions. Most research findings indicated this is
due to the undemocratic principles and practices of the government of Ethiopia. Suggestions had
a tendency to lead to the conclusion that government regulates information contrary to the tenets
of democratic values.
It appeared interesting to investigate whether government, media houses and/or journalists have
role in determining the practice of
freedom of information. In order to study, qualitative methods
of data gathering technical was used throughout the course of the study with a minimal usage of
quantitative approach. This research reported that government, media houses and journalists have
contributed to the low level of
freedom of information practice in Ethiopia. It was found also
journalists‟ perception of the practicality of
freedom of information contribute to their motivation
to access information. To ensure free flow of information, political will of government coupled
with strong and independent media houses was recommended.

▼ This thesis argues that the modern notion of free-speech was born within the Westphalian nation-state. It suggests that the legal rights framework - particular to the Westphalian nationstate - not only legitimizes and legalizes the right to free-speech, but also enables us to invoke legally the necessary limitations that demand the limitation of free-speech in certain contexts. However, such a legal-rights framework is exclusive to the nation-state and cannot be enforced on an international level, outside of the nation-state boundary. With reference to examples on an international level, this thesis demonstrates that calls for the limitation of free-speech are indeed legitimate and necessary but cannot be enforced on an international level for the reasons just mentioned. In order to address this problem, this thesis proposes a framework - based on a Kantian model - that enables us to invoke the limitation of free-speech on an international level without appealing to a legal-rights discourse to do so.

▼ This thesis is an attempt to arrive at a more suitable justification for the institution of punishment. The problem arises because punishment discriminates between those who are considered offenders (one who has broken the law) and those considered non-offenders. Punishment also goes beyond distinguishing between the offender and the non-offender to inflict some pain or deprive some right to the one considered as an offender. Both the discrimination and the pain inflicted or right deprived to the offender require a justification to be acceptable. This is what has engaged many theorists in penology. There are various positions on the matter. One of the traditional positions like the desert-based retributivists, a variant of the Retributivists justification for punishment says the offender deserves to be punished because he or she has committed a crime and deserves a punishment that inflicts a pain which is equal to the crime that has been committed. The other traditional position is the utilitarian position which suggests that it is justifiable to punish the offender because such a punishment will preserve the society by maintaining social control. This thesis proposes a rational contractarian approach based on the ideas of the contractarian Jean Jacques Rousseau. This thesis suggests that a more plausible justification for punishment could be based on freedom as an essential characteristic of the human being. When a person is deprived of his or her freedom the person loses their humanity. The thesis further suggests that when a person lives according to rational nature, they will live according to the general will, which is always good and makes him free. However, a person who lives according to the will of another or according to one‟s passions, will live in subjugation to another person‟s will or passions against the general will and by so doing is not free. The actual will of a person rises against the general will (the person‟s real will), and this results in a split will. Such a split will is one which makes a person commit a crime and become an offender and unfree. This thesis proposes that punishment remedies this situation when the laws which are based on the general will are applied. The rational will of the person discerns the general will and from that makes the laws. When a person is punished based on the law, then, one punishes oneself and is thus subject neither to another nor to one‟s passions and so is free; there is no distinction between the sovereign who makes the law and the offender who has broken the law. Punishment is thus applied to make a person free since by going against the general will one has made oneself unfree. This thesis seeks to pick some positive attributes of the traditional positions, while avoiding some of their major criticisms and adding its own unique features like concentrating on human freedom as an essential basis to give a more suitable justification for punishment.

▼ This dissertation is a study of the relationship between the transformation of work and the ever-shifting meanings of
freedom. I examine how low-wage workers, policymakers, and intellectuals in the United States thought about work as it was dramatically transformed and how work’s transformations provoked new debates over the meaning of
freedom. Drawing on congressional, labor, and local records as well as rarely-used activist archives, I show how the meanings of
freedom have long been rooted in the experience of its opposite—in the myriad forms of domination found in slavery and coverture laws, in debt peonage and the private tyrannies of newfound industrial factories, in low-wage service work and in poverty.
Although I explore debates over the transformation of work in the wake of abolition and industrialization up through the early twentieth century, the bulk of the dissertation grapples with the vexed relationship between work and
freedom that was illuminated in the pitched ideological battles of the late twentieth century—in debates over automation, immigration, welfare reform, and globalization. In contrast to the standard historiography, I contend that this quest for and articulation of
freedom continued past late-nineteenth-century debates over the “labor question” and well into the postindustrial era. I stress that—with deindustrialization, the demise of the labor movement, and the stagnation of wages—the experiences and effects of poverty played a growing role in shaping the understanding of the value of work and the meanings of
freedom and unfreedom.
This shift in the meaning of
freedom coincides with the transition from labor-scarce industrial capitalism to the labor surplus that defined late twentieth-century capitalism. I tell this story by uncovering the ideas of immigrants and refugees, welfare recipients and care workers, anarchists and union workers, offering an intellectual history “from below” of the makings of
freedom amid the experience of racial, gender, and class domination.

▼ This thesis uses the recently decided R v NS to assess the contours of the freedom to wear the niqab, as part of religious freedom, in Canada. By criticizing the majority and concurring opinions I argue that, properly understood, a witness’s religious freedom should protect her from an order to unveil when she is testifying in court. I show that the concurring opinion holds the witness to an illiberal, unfair standard of personal behaviour that fails to respect the witness’s religious freedom. I show that the majority’s decision, though following a justified liberal process of balancing rights, failed to protect NS’s meaningful choice to practice her religion, a standard set by the court in Hutterian Brethren. I then assess the broader implications of R v NS. I argue that in theoretical terms R v NS reaffirms Canada’s commitment to a liberal system of reciprocal rights and rejects a perfectionist approach according to which societal values can override rights. These theoretical lessons are then applied to other policies regulating the veil. I argue that despite its shortcomings, R v NS should generate optimism that perfectionist policies will be rejected and that the veil will only be limited minimally and only when the limit is necessary to uphold other legitimate aims.

▼ Hannah Arendt, one of the most important political thinkers of the twentieth century, passed away before finishing her final statement on politics. Because her political theory is incomplete, scholars have adopted many means for interpreting her work. In this dissertation, I adopt a phenomenological approach to understanding Arendt by engaging with the phenomenological method Arendt, herself, used—narrative. I specifically employ the Passover narrative as a metaphorical framework alongside which Arendt’s political theory is traced. In this approach, four elements of Arendt’s theory emerge to distinguish her thought from the Western political tradition: the role of the mental activities, the definition of action, the space of appearance, and the concept of freedom. As Arendt separates herself from her European influences, such as Heidegger, Jaspers, Kant, and Nietzsche, the Jewish aspects of her work begin to come into focus. For each of the elements, the distinct influence of Arendt’s Jewish experiences is expounded. Drawing from the mystical and orthodox traditions of Judaism, novel and intriguing insights into Arendt’s work are discovered. In the end, Arendt leaves us with a theory of politics that is possibly grounded in a concept of love that is both humanist and Jewish.

▼ This study focuses on Hegelâs national philosophy."Philosophy of right" explains the spirit of the lawâ
freedom. Peopleâs
freedom lives, constitution and the social security system are the responsibility of a modern state. This article will find that the Constitution is the fundament of the state, because the constitution guarantees peopleâs
freedom and the rights.
National study of Hegel's thought focuses on objective spirit, because country serves the population as a whole.

The faith, man can triumph over nature, is the belief in this era. People can manage their owns as long as the Fair and justice legal system as protection. Hegel considered the country needs a constitution, because the Constitution is the common will of the peopleâs, therefore, the state is that the common will of the peopleâs.

▼ Stoic philosophers had to face the accusation of incoherence, self-contradiction and Paradoxes since ancient times. Plutarch in his Moralia writes against them; Cicero devotes a separate work on stoic paradoxes (Paradoxa stoicorum). Even in contemporary Literature there are still discussions on the possibility of such an incoherence and existence of paradoxes in the stoic theory.
At first glance, stoic Cosmology gives the impression to both (paradoxically) accept a kind of Determinism, and at the same time it undoubtedly argues for the moral agent’s
freedom of the Will. In pre-stoic or even other contemporary to Stoicism Philosophical Traditions, the definitions that these two terms/concepts are given, fairly accuse as incoherent any Theory that does not set them as “contraries”. Under these types of accusations, the stoic Cosmology and Theory of the
Freedom of the Will is often to be included.
This phenomenal self-contradiction inside the Principles of Stoicism becomes even more obvious in Epictetus, a philosopher of the Late Stoa. He is interested in practical ethics, thus the phenomenal contradiction gets more lucid. This would have augmented the criticism of the Stoic philosophy for incoherence, if Epictetus had not made his main philosophical aim/target (through the use of detailed ethical examples): the clarification of how an agent’s Will can be (prohairesis/προαίρεσις) Free inside a Universe ruled by Fate/Destiny (Πεπρωμένη); namely, a Universe merely Determined by Nature’s/God’s Will.
Epictetus’ originality appears in the way he interrelates the concept of
Freedom (ἐλευθερία) of the Will with the concept of Destiny and Determinism, in order to accomplish their simultaneous co-existence. This approach guards him against being easily accused for incoherence and self-contradiction.
Through the unique way he understands and defines the Moral Agency, which is the agent’s internal state/condition/disposition (prohairesis) , he steers towards an integrated, accomplished, strong and coherent line of argument. This sturdy declaration is able to support the weight of the Consent to a Free Will (ἐλευθερία), and thus a certain kind
Freedom (defined differently to the common conception of
Freedom) of the moral agent. The excellence of this line of argument is that it can bear also the burden of the Consent to the phenomenally contrary concept of Determinism and Destiny (Πεπρωμένη).
The elements used to the construction of this argument, which is stretched throughout the whole epictetean corpus (the Discourses and the Enchiridion/Manual as reported by Arrian, the Epictetus’ pupil) can be summarised to a few key concepts, which are: the things which are in our power (τά ἐφ' ἡμῖν) and the things which are not in our power (τά οὐκ ἐφ' ἡμῖν), the concept of
Freedom (ἐλευθερία). These concepts work towards his philosophical targeting, because of the special definition he gives them.
Axiomatically Epictetus states that in order for man to be free, it is necessary to be liberated from what the body forces him to do.…

▼ In typical debates about freedom, compatibilists and incompatibilists dispute whether and how one can defuse the threat that a naturalistic worldview seems to pose for our conception of free will. Proponents of both sides standardly take it for granted that natural causality is a potential threat only for practical deliberation, and that no corresponding worries arise for our self-conception as theorizers who make up their mind about what to believe about the world. I show that Kant rejects this standard dichotomy between practice and theory. He holds that we must both act and believe 'under the idea of freedom': the standpoint of theoretical reasoning, the very source of the naturalistic worldview, must itself rely on the idea of freedom (or spontaneity) and thus cannot expose free will as an illusion. This line of thought, I argue, casts a refreshing new light on debates about what kind of freedom is worth having; and it provides an intriguing defense of our freedom from natural necessity.I argue that Kant's conception of theoretical freedom is as anti-naturalistic as his conception of practical freedom. This twofold anti-naturalism derives from Kant's conviction that both our practical and our epistemic orientation depend on representations that we cannot attribute to natural causes without losing our grip on their objective validity. These include, in the practical case, the categorical imperative and, in the theoretical case, the principle of sufficient reason, which states that natural events are causally necessitated. Since we do not derive these representations from sense perception, our commitment to them must, within a wholly naturalistic framework, be traced to the influence of contingent psychological processes in the vein of Hume's 'customs'. The concession that our attitudes are the product of such customs challenges our conviction that we form these attitudes on the basis of objective reasons.Against prevailing interpretations, I show that this line of thought plays an indispensable role in Kant's defense of free will against attacks from the theoretical standpoint. Kant's point is that someone occupying this standpoint must rely on her cognitive freedom from natural necessity: that is, she must take her beliefs about the natural causes of actions to be responsive to objective theoretical reasons, and here she cannot concede that the representation of causal necessity is merely the product of the workings of non-rational psychological processes. So the naturalistic perspective cannot expose freedom as an illusion. This provides the idea of free will with a robust invulnerability against an exclusively naturalistic worldview.

▼ Religion is an important determinant of collective action and can operate on multiple levels to influence social contention. Social scientists are paying increasing attention to the power of religious institutions to shape patterns of social life by fomenting both societal harmony and discord. This research focuses upon the latter. I explore the extent to which established theories of social conflict can be applied to explain patterns of conflict that are affiliated with religious identity.
Chapter 1 introduces the research project and offers an outline of the dissertation.
Chapter 2 assesses existing data and provides a detailed description the procedures used to collect the information employed in this research. This research utilizes primary and secondary data to examine religious conflict. Information on the sociopolitical environment is drawn from the 2008 International Religious
Freedom Report dataset. Information regarding religious conflict events is collected and quantified in the Religious Conflict Events data. Additional country-level data is drawn from various reliable sources as well.
Chapter 3 examines the structural determinants of religious repression using data coded from the 2008 International Religious
Freedom Reports. Regression analysis suggests that the presence and scope of religious repression is associated with levels of general and religion specific measures of restriction and regulation.
In Chapter 4, I analyze the macro-social influences on religious intergroup conflict (RIC). The chapter explores conflict events between non-state actors and tests for the impact of religious diversity, competition, and inequality on the extent of RIC events. The analysis demonstrates that religious conflict between groups is primarily driven by inequality and discrimination based on religious identity.
Past research often explores the factors that cause and escalate religious conflicts of one type or another—rebellion, interstate war, civil war—however, few, if any, attempt to determine which type of conflict is likely to emerge based on the sociopolitical contexts in which the actors exist. Chapter 5 is an exploration of the influences predicting the likelihood of particular forms of religious conflict. Multinomial logistic regression demonstrates that the commonality of religious conflict manifestations is more or less likely in specific sociopolitical contexts. Finally, I synthesize the findings presented in previous chapters, discuss the research limitations, and propose potential directions for future research in Chapter 6.

▼ At the time of writing, bargaining in Ontario’s education sector is governed under two regimes; The Putting Students First Act - legislation which imposed Collective Agreements across Ontario, and its successor legislation; The School Boards Collective Bargaining Act – which limits workers’ rights to choose who will represent them, and centralizes the bargaining process for some, while keeping it out of reach from others.
This paper examines the constitutionality of each regime under Canadian law having regard for the freedom of association, which is a protected right under Canada’s Charter of Rights and Freedoms (the Charter), and the jurisprudence interpreting that right.
The author concludes that both regimes fail to pass constitutional muster. The Putting Students First Act violates the Charter by setting strict parameters on bargaining outcomes for the education sector, unilaterally changing working conditions during bargaining, and by imposing collective agreements which took away a unions’ ability to strike.
The School Boards Collective Bargaining Act violates the Charter by designating which unions can represent workers at the central bargaining table, by excluding small unions from central bargaining, and by denying parties the right to strike over certain types of bargaining disputes

▼ This thesis makes the claim that the distinction made between positive and negative
freedom (as well as between competing claims of
freedom more generally) are not, and should not be about disagreements as to what ‘real’ or ‘true’
freedom is, but are instead expressions of which freedoms align with certain philosopher’s broader ideas of justice. What I believe this means is that it is wrong to claim that only a purely negative or positive concept of
freedom is the only coherent concept of liberty, and that instead the disagreement and the distinctions made are in fact done so on disagreements about which freedoms are valuable and why. The overall value of instances of
freedom is in turn derived from our theories of justice and the ethical commitments which comprise these theories. Therefore I argue, referring to the work of Carter, that a complete and coherent concept of
freedom must be both value-neutral in that it does not give superiority to any particular ethical claims made in regards to
freedom, and as value-free in that we do not define
freedom as only those instances which are also just.
It is because of this that I will defend an altered version of MacCallum’s triadic formulation of liberty, which I believe is most successful at encompassing what it is we mean when we’re talking about
freedom, by presenting
freedom as a relationship between agent, preventing condition - as well as a fulfilment condition that I have added - and an action or behaviour. In this way my altered version of MacCallum’s concept sets the foundations for what I will argue is a value-neutral and value-free concept of
freedom, which gives a structure for us to make sense of all intelligible expressions of
freedom and gives a neutral base from which to introduce other commitments and values to argue for certain types of
freedom over others.

▼ LL.M.
This study conducts an analysis of the right to freedom of religion in South Africa. The historical development of the right is discussed. Attention is also given to the interpretation of the right and the legal definition of the term “religion”. The bearers of the right, namely natural persons, juristic persons and other associations, are also highlighted; as well as the duties imposed by the right to freedom of religion. However, the focal point of the study is the ambit and content of the right. Particular attention is given in this regard to the components of sections 15(1) to (3). The conclusion is reached that the right to freedom of religion consists of freedom of autonomy; freedom of choice; freedom of observance; freedom of teaching; and freedom to propagate a religion or denomination. The limitation of the right is also considered, in particular the meaning of the general limitation provision, as well as the relevant factors to be reviewed and the specific limitation provisions that may come into play.

▼ The existence of
freedom of_ expression in general and media
freedom in particular is
one of the most important indicators of the presence of democracy in a given country.
Article 29 of the 1995 Constitution of the Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia has
laid the legal structure for the existence of
freedom of _expression in Ethiopia.
Accordingly, all the subsidiary laws advocate the flourishing of media
freedom in
Ethiopia. The legal framework for transforming state broadcasting into public service
broadcasting (PSB) is encouraging. However, what is happening in practice is
questionable.
This thesis looks at the state of affairs of State Broadcasting in Ethiopia, using
content analysis as a quantitative data-gathering instrument. Key informant interviews
and legal documents have been used to collect data as a qualitative means. The study has
selected 131 news items from 15 days of Ethiopian Radio Amharic prime time news
bulletin. The data collected via content analysis has been supplemented by the data
gathered through qualitative means. In this study, the practice of state broadcasting has
been tested against the principles and practices of public service broadcasting.
One of the findings of the study is that there is a very tight form of political
control in the activities of journalists working in state broadcasting in general, and in
Ethiopian Radio in particular. Government officials, predominantly from the Ministry of
Information, directly and indirectly interfere in the editorial independence of journalists
working on Ethiopian Radio.
In order to protect state broadcasting from political interference, and to maintain
editorial independence, the study suggests a new law should be drafted by the Ethiopian
Parliament. This would facilitate a smooth transformation from state broadcasting to
public service broadcasting. Article 29, sub Article 2 of the 1995 Constitution of the
Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia explicitly supports the enactment of a law that
promotes media independence in the country.
Public service broadcasting must be guaranteed protection from political and/or
commercial interference. This will be closer to reality when the appointment and
accountability of PSB officials, their duties and responsibilities are clearly supported by a
law according to the accepted principles of PSB. Public service broadcasting demands
that editorial independence be respected. Moreover, the programming should serve the
public interest and, in particular, should be balanced and impartial. At the very least, PSB
should be editorially independent as an institution, and should serve the public fairly,
helping to empower people so as to enable them make to decisions and to play a role
towards the establishment and continuity of a democracy.

fundamental rights under international human rights law prohibited without any derogation.
Violations against this right will inevitability destruct the core theme of human dignity. All
dominant international and regional human rights law instruments such as UDHR, ICCPR,
ACHPR, ACHR, ECHR and most importantly CAT, provide for the prohibition of violation
against this
freedom in strict terms. States are under international obligation to ensure the
protection of this
freedom in all circumstances. Ethiopia also, as a state party to most of these
instruments, has a duty to realize the full enjoyment of this
freedom under its territory. Oromia
National Regional State is the largest region in Ethiopia that has the largest population size-
population all deserving the enjoyment of this
freedom. On the other hand, prisons are places
alleged to be notorious sites where the right of individuals to
freedom from torture, inhuman or
degrading treatment or punishment can be vastly violated.
The present work, therefore, evaluated the protection of this
freedom in some selected prisons of
Oromia region in light of international human rights law. In doing so, the writer has analyzed
various international, regional, and domestic legal instruments, and relevant cases dealing with
the right. After defining the normative content of the right, the writer has assessed five prisons-
Woliso, Shashemene, Ambo, Ziway, and Adama- and one center of training for prisoners- Dippo
[Adama] Technical and Vocational Training Center. The data collection stage of the work has
employed questioner, interview, and field observation as a method of gathering information from
prisoners, prison warders, and prison authorities in which more than 200 respondents have been
consulted. After conducting serious analysis, the writer has, eventually, reached to the following
findings: Except for mild cases of Dippo center of training, the treatment of prisoners in all
prisons covered under the study is poor; especially prisoners are suffering from impoverished
conditions of accommodation, clothing and bedding, personal hygiene, medical care, sport and
exercise, library and book, work, education and training, separation of categories, and lack of
compliant procedures. There is grave violation against prisoners’ right to
freedom from torture,
inhuman or degrading treatment or punishment, except in Dippo center of training. There is no
well organized training program on human rights and treatment of prisoners arranged for
prison warders. There is no experience in which persons (prison warders or authorities) who
violated this
freedom had been prosecuted. The work has, finally, recommended plausible
solutions to strengthen the protection of this
freedom in these prisons.

▼ Arendtâs great contribution to contemporary political thought is her conceptualization of political action as a distinct category of philosophical enquiry. In this paper, the concept of "the social" is intended to explain how modern society limits our
freedom and emphasizes that "political
freedom" is an irreversible part of modern society.
Modern political philosophy is faced with new situation: There is tension between the "the social" and politics. For modern liberalism or socialism, society is regarded as an autonomous organism and political became a kind of governance function. What is more important is that "
freedom" has lost its condition as a state of collective action, replaced by the definition and expression of the free from the political which constitutes the governance model of modern society.
In response to this phenomenon, then this article attempts to discuss is that in modern society, we need to better understand in so far as: how we prevent us and others from the
freedom.

This study aims to explain how Schopenhauer deals with the problem of human
freedom based on the concept of will, by following his views on existence, knowledge and human and by showing the connections among them. Since Schopenhauer sees human as one of the steps of objectification, which he defines as thething-in-itself an analysis of
freedom first requires understanding his concept of will. Therefore, Schopenhauer's concept of claim has been exlained in detail and then his claim of human as a product of will has been elaborated. Schopenhauer claims that human, as an extension of the necessity we observe in nature of will. In this study, the validity of these claims has been demonstrated in detail through an examination of the relationship between human and will.

▼ Vietnam started a renewal process named “Doi moi” in 1986 to liberalize its economy and improve its status in the world. This process has resulted in the country’s fast economic development with GDP growth of between 6 and 8 per cent in recent years.
However, the rapid economic progress and social changes have brought about corruption, threatening the country’s growth and sustainability. Top leaders have therefore declared corruption as a national threat. Before the year of 2010, just two corruption scandals were reported. During the current period of 2010-2014, more than 10 corruption scandals have been investigated, revealed and re-ported in the mass media. Of them, 5 key scandals will be discussed. This thesis seeks to explore the central question: “Is Vietnam democratizing, and, if so, does the democratic transition explain the increasing number of corruption scandals to-day in the country?” The thesis starts with the political base to look into the origins of the issue.
The thesis examines aspects of democracy, democratization, corruption and media described by scholars and then studies whether the country is really in a democratization process and whether there is a relationship between democratization, press
freedom and perceptions of corruption. Reported corruption scandals between 2010 and 2014, surveys and reports on corruptions by local and international NGOs and newspapers will be analyzed.
The thesis concludes that Vietnam is now democratizing with successes in mitigation of oppression and amplification of civil liberties, while in the nation’s government this process has seen a growing schism among top-ranking leaders. In particular, it is this democratization that reduces the levels of perceptions of corruption. This finding is totally different from previous findings made for other democratizing countries. The thesis also reveals that the democratic transition in Vietnam has increased press
freedom. Vietnamese media now enjoy the right to spread news and information although some international watchdogs insist that the government is overly censoring the media. In turn, higher levels of press
freedom, created by more democratization, heighten the number of corruption scandals revealed. The thesis concludes that there are causal relations between democratization, perceptions of corruption, press
freedom and the number of corruption scandals in Vietnam.

Metaphysical freedom and determinism: an African perspective.

▼ The study places emphasis on the critical and philosophical nature of the African concept of destiny as it relates to the problem of
freedom and determinism. In light of this, it focuses on the problem of
freedom and determinism as we have it in Western scholarship. Historically, there are two contrasting schools of thought emerged. These are; the hard determinists, who argue that all events, including human actions are determined by causal laws; and the libertarians who believe that human beings are not determined and possess freewill. In an attempt to reconcile these seeming contrasting views another school of thought emerged, which is, Compatibilism. Compatibilists believes that choice and causal determination of human actions are not mutually exclusive but are compatible. The compatibilist position was heavily criticized by both the determinists and the libertarians.
The philosophers who debated on this issue failed to reach a resolution concerning the nature of human agency in this world. The fact that the problem was not resolved in the Western circles necessitated the need to investigate the problem from an African perspective. In light of this, the thesis observes that the cornerstone for the determinists’ arguments is the principle of causation. To this effect, the thesis considers how Africans understand the principle of causation. This is done in order to find out whether the African understanding of the principle is detrimental to human
freedom. The thesis observes that there are two ways of understanding causation in the African worldview, which are, empirical and supernatural causation. The Africans regard the latter to be of paramount importance in explaining phenomena between events. In light of this, I argue that cause as understood by the Africans is not detrimental to human
freedom since an individual can appeal or manipulate mystical powers in order to change his or her fate. Thus, the principle of cause, for the Africans, attests to soft-determinism and not hard determinism.
The principle of cause as well as the African metaphysical components of a person have a strong bearing on the African understanding of human destiny. This is so because one of the constituent parts of a person is the bearer of destiny. For the Akans, it is the okra which is the bearer of destiny, whereas for the Yoruba people it is the ori. These constituent parts of a human being plays a pivotal role in the Akan and Yoruba people’s understanding of human destiny respectively. The thesis goes on to look at the African understanding of destiny as presented by Gbadegesin and Gyekye. I also argue that the concept of destiny is informed by the Western understanding of predestination.
However, in Western scholarship, predestination is understood to be other worldly, whereas for the Africans it is understood to be this worldly. Further to this, two schools of thought have emerged in African philosophy. On the one hand, there are scholars who believe that destiny, once handed down by the Supreme Being, is unalterable. On the…
