Este trabalho, tendo como objeto de investigação as narrativas dos abolicionistas Luiz Gama (1830-1882) e Frederick Douglass (1818-1895), pretende evidenciar a maneira como os aspectos linguísticos e semióticos se articulam nos processos de projeção discursiva do eu e de construção discursiva identitária, bem como demonstrar a maneira como cada enunciador apresenta suas escolhas discursivas por meio dos procedimentos de tematização e figurativização. Assim sendo, temos como uma das principais intenções contribuir para a ampliação de visões e perspectivas, teóricas e analíticas, acerca dos escritos de ex-escravizados. Por conseguinte, a linha teórica norteadora deste trabalho é a Semiótica Discursiva de linha francesa. Essa perspectiva, de origem estruturalista, tem como foco o estudo, a reflexão e a análise da estrutura interna do texto. Concebida como a teoria geral da significação, a Semiótica ocupa-se dos processos de articulação discursiva que promovem a construção dos efeitos de sentido dos textos. Com isso, o corpus selecionado para a execução da pesquisa foi composto pelos seguintes textos: o poema Quem sou eu? (1861), a Carta a Lúcio de Mendonça (1880), ambos de autoria de Luiz Gama, e Narrative of the life of Frederick Douglass, an American Slave (1845), escrita por Frederick Douglass

In this work, we take as object of investigation the narratives of the abolitionists Luiz Gama (1830-1882), Brazilian, and Frederick Douglass (1818-1895), American. Thus, we intend to evidence the way as the linguistic and semiotic aspects are articulated in the processes of discursive projection of the self and discursive construction of identity, as well as to demonstrate the way each enunciator presents his discursive choices through the thematization and figurativization processes. So, one of our main intentions is to contribute to the expansion of theoretical and analytical visions and perspectives, on the narrative of ex-enslaved. Consequently, the theoretical framework of this work is Discursive Semiotics. This perspective takes into account the study, reflection and analysis of the internal structure of the text. Conceived as the general theory of signification, Semiotics is engaged in the processes of discursive articulation that promote the construction of the meaning effects of the texts. Therewith, the corpus selected for this research comprises the poem Quem sou eu? [Who am I?] (1861), Carta a Lúcio de Mendonça [Letter to Lúcio de Mendonça] (1880), both written by Luiz Gama, and Narrative of the life of Frederick Douglass, an American Slave (1845), written by himself

▼ Thomas Carlyle’s History of Friedrich II. of Prussia, called Frederick the Great was published in six volumes between 1858 and 1865 and was his last major work. Carlyle had a specific purpose in mind when he began writing Frederick. He believed that contemporary events had left Europe in disarray and the British nation fragmented. In his view, the nation needed to function as a family unit, with the older, more experienced members of the group instructing and educating the young. Carlyle’s attempt to address the situation with the publication of his Latter-Day Pamphlets in 1850 had failed, largely due to their aggressive tone. He adopted an entirely different approach when it came to writing Frederick. Chapter one explores Carlyle’s vacillation over his choice of Frederick as a suitable subject for his history and investigates his soul-searching over whether or not to proceed with the project. It examines the three-way relationship which Carlyle created between himself, Frederick and the reader and explores the various language techniques that Carlyle used to create and maintain this relationship. In chapter two, Carlyle’s style of writing in Frederick is investigated. It argues that Carlyle was engaged in the act of storytelling and explores the various literary techniques that he used to achieve this. Chapter three consists of an in-depth examination of Carlyle’s use of oral techniques in Frederick, investigating the variety of oral devices he employed in order to ‘speak’ to his readers and create a unified readership. Chapters four and five focus on Carlyle’s research methods. They examine the texts which Carlyle used for his research—original manuscripts, printed texts, letters, histories and biographies—investigating how these were incorporated into Frederick and evaluating whether or not Carlyle was true to his source material. Carlyle’s two trips to Germany in order to research material are also investigated. In Chapters six and seven, the contemporary reception of Frederick is explored. Chapter six focuses on the reaction to the first two volumes which were published together in 1858, whilst chapter seven investigates the response to the later volumes, exploring the ways in which the completed work influenced the public’s perception of Carlyle as a historian and ending by examining both Carlyle’s and Frederick’s places in posterity. Despite Carlyle’s labours on Frederick it never received the acclaim of his earlier productions but was regarded by many as a marker which signalled the end of Carlyle’s long and illustrious literary career.

O presente trabalho investiga, a partir da sociologia do cinema, uma seleção de filmes documentais do cineasta americano Frederick Wiseman (1930-). Trata-se de um documentarista com grande importância para o que ficou conhecido como cinema direto ou cinema vérité, uma corrente cinematográfica que, através de determinados artifícios formais ausência de narração, entrevistas ou intertítulos , causa uma forte impressão de realismo. Com isso, pretendi não apenas melhor compreender a produção deste cineasta como também refletir sobre algumas das construções narrativas presentes em seus filmes e, a partir disso, sobre algumas das relações entre cinema e realismo. Buscando trazer para a discussão este diretor pouco comentado na literatura brasileira, analisei aqui oito de seus filmes, distribuídos em três blocos temáticos: hospitais, exército e lazer. A análise se deu através de uma sociologia do cinema que compreende que a análise deve partir do próprio filme, compreendendo-o enquanto obra e enquanto a principal fonte de informação. No caso deste trabalho, a maneira pela qual Wiseman construiu imagens e narrativas ao longo de sua filmografia é interpretada enquanto uma resposta a uma das questões que permeia o cinema documental, qual seja, de como retratar e detalhar o real. Tendo isso em mente, podemos dizer que a câmera observadora não apenas observa. Ela narra, ela fala e ela argumenta.

In this thesis I investigate, by means of a sociology of cinema, a selection of films by the American filmmaker Frederick Wiseman (1930-). Being a documentary filmmaker of great importance for what became known as direct cinema or cinema vérité, a cinematographic trend that, by means of certain formal devices the absence of voice-overs, interviews of inter-titles leads to a strong impression of realism. Thereby, I intended to not only better comprehend Wisemans production as well as some considerations on the narrative constructions in his films, but also to consider some of the relations between cinema and realism. While I aim to bring forth a debate regarding this rarely discussed director within the Brazilian literature, I here analyze eight of his films, divided in three different themed topics: hospitals, military and leisure. The analysis was done by means of a sociology of cinema, which understands that the investigation must begin with the film itself, understanding it as a piece of work and as the main source of information. In this thesis, the manner by which Wiseman crafted images and narrative over the course of his filmography is seen as an answer to one of the questions that permeates documentary cinema, namely, on how to depict and detail reality. With this in mind, we can say that the observational camera does not merely observe. It narrates, it speaks and it argues.

▼ Filósofos contemporâneos tendem a tratar o ceticismo de maneiras frequentemente descuidadas. Seja porque não apresentam uma noção clara do ceticismo, seja porque oferecem reações descabidas a ele. Alguns consideram que a maneira correta de abordar o ceticismo é enfrentá-lo, provando aquilo que o cético visa colocar em questão. Outros consideram que a maneira correta é recusar o desafio cético, pela rejeição das próprias questões levantadas pelo ceticismo. Uma reação diferente pode ser encontrada na forma de “argumentos transcendentais”, tais como aqueles paradigmaticamente utilizados por Peter Strawson em Individuals ([1959] 1971). Barry Stroud (1968) concebe esses argumentos como uma tentativa de mostrar que certos conceitos são necessários para o pensamento e para a experiência; conceitos que são condições para que a dúvida cética tenha sentido. Stroud sustenta que os argumentos transcendentais de Strawson, para terem um real efeito anticético, teriam de contar com um “princípio de verificação” que tornasse aquilo que o cético põe em dúvida suscetível de ser verificado ou falsificado. Em Ceticismo e Naturalismo ([1987] 2008), Strawson parece conceder a essa crítica quando passa a adotar um “naturalismo social”, o qual consiste em recusar tentativas de refutar diretamente o ceticismo, dado que os conceitos questionados pelo cético são, por assim dizer, inevitáveis por natureza, sendo, por isso, “isentos de dúvida”. No entanto, Putnam (1998) aponta uma tensão na postura anticética nessa obra que seria incompatível com os argumentos transcendentais. Frente a esses desenvolvimentos, as questões centrais que esta dissertação se propõe a responder são: como podemos compreender o ceticismo que surge na investigação de Strawson? Stroud está correto em sua objeção, segundo a qual um argumento transcendental exige um princípio de verificação para o seu efeito anticético? Existe apenas um tipo de argumento transcendental? Como deveríamos compreendê-lo? Strawson de fato muda de posição, de um argumento transcendental para um naturalismo social? Essas posições se harmonizam em suas reflexões? Argumentarei que o ceticismo de Individuals é melhor compreendido como uma variedade de ceticismo Kantiano (em oposição a um ceticismo Cartesiano) a partir dos estudos de Conant (2012). Pretendo mostrar a plausibilidade dessa leitura ao abordar detidamente duas espécies de cet icismo na obra, chamadas, “ceticismo sobre a reidentificação de particulares” (Capítulo 1) e “ceticismo sobre outras mentes” (Capítulo 2). A fim de examinar a natureza dos argumentos transcendentais e ver qual é exatamente o argumento encontrado em Individuals, apresento uma terminologia de tipos de argumentos transcendentais a partir de Stern (2000) (Capítulo 3). Isso permitirá mostrar que Stroud “erra o alvo” quando faz a sua objeção, pois o argumento transcendental que ele tem em vista é de outro tipo. ▼ Taking into account the Environmental Restorative Theory (ERT) , created by Fre derick Law Olmsted in mid XIX ce ntury , according which, urban parks can contribute to solve problems arisen from crowding , particularly urban stress, we analize how the ERT arrived at XXI century, having as approach the evaluation of New York Central Park (CP). Considering that the CP and the cinema were born around at the same, we question if the North American cinema produced between 1960 and 2013 show the ideals, which engendered the CP. By answering this question we defend the hypothesis that, even though has existed adjusts and modificati ons in the CP plan through time, it kept reasonably faithful to the ERT premises, propitiating to the XX and XXI centuries cinema identify and bring forth the presence of the Olmsted’s Ideals in the present days. The thesis main objective was nonetheless u nderstand similarities and/or differences between the XIX century ideals (that gave birth to CP) and the way the cinema represents the present uses of the place, taking into account that the Olmstedian ERT proposal have survived to the context changes (soc ial, economic, political and cultural). Methodologically , we drew upon bibliographical and documental analysis to build the first chapters and to the cinema as analytical lenses to investigate the ERT. The results point that although the CP plan has kept r elatively intact and faithful to the ERT – with the presence of natural elements in the films (notably vegetation and water) – many of contemporary behaviors were not foreseen previously, especially in relation to sports practice, the massive feminine pres ence, as well as criminality. ▼ Frederick Douglass (1818-1895) was born a slave; however, at an early age he decided to become a free man. Unlike many other slaves, Douglass set his mind on learning to read, convinced that education and knowledge would get him far in life. Lack of education and illiteracy were among the slaveholder’s most important tools to maintain slavery and therefore it seemed important for Douglass to educate himself. Douglass was a humanist and fought hard to ensure his people a better quality of life. Once he was free, Douglass became a dedicated spokesman for the abolition of slavery and in support of women’s rights. He went across the country, and all over the world, to give speeches about his experience as a slave. He was unique in a way; he was well spoken and had a tremendous effect on people who listened to him. Douglass published many, if not all, of his speeches. In addition to his public speaking at meetings for increased human and civil rights, Douglass published papers and books. Of his books, three were autobiographies: Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass: An American Slave, Written by Himself (1845), My Bondage and My Freedom (1855), and Life and Times of Frederick Douglass (1881). Douglass did not only write autobiographies and articles but also a novella called The Heroic Slave, which was published in 1853. In December 1847 Douglass brought out the first issue of his newspaper, The North Star, which later became Frederick Douglass’s Weekly and finally Frederick Douglass’s Monthly (Gottesman, “Frederick Douglass” 2031). Douglass’ books reveal his different interpretations of slavery, describing slavery precisely, as he experienced it and as he witnessed it. This essay draws upon Douglass’ second autobiography, My Bondage and My Freedom, as well as some of his speeches. It is divided into five chapters: the first four recount how the slaves were suppressed by the means of physical abuse, disruption of family ties, ignorance, and religion, showing Douglass’ growing conviction that education and resistance were essential in the battle for freedom, which is the main concern of the last chapter.

▼ This graduate vocal recital is composed of songs spanning the eras of the Baroque period though the twentieth century. I chose these pieces as a culmination of my academic study as a voice major for their lyrical beauty, and captivating texts. This recital is composed of pieces from many different periods; from the florid arias of George Frederic Handel to the haunting melodies of Ned Rorem. The selections represent vocal lyricism at its best. The pieces meld vocal lines, and piano accompaniments forming human communication, each unique to its era. Each composer featured on this recital demonstrates his own particular genius of setting various poets. The captivating melodies of each art song come to life through their individual stories of heartbreak, love, and romance. George Frederic Handel was one of the most influential composers of Italian opera during the Baroque period. The innovations Handel made to this emerging art form influenced the world of opera forever. Alma Mia, an aria from the opera Floridante, is a light-hearted piece full of joy and bliss. This aria is done is in the da capo tradition, after the middle section, returning to the beginning and adding ornaments to embellish the melody. This was done in the highest taste, and was utilized by most composers of the Baroque era. Handel was also known for his oratorios. Total Eclipse, from the oratorio Samson, tells the dark story of Samson from the Bible. This short narrative is set in minor and captures the pure agony of Samson as he struggles with the concept of losing his sight. One of the most prolific composers of German Lieder, Johannes Brahms, brought to this art form a new sense of lyricism and vocal beauty. Brahms took the melodic line of each Lied be composed and brought the poetry to life. Die Mainacht, composed from a text by Holty, tells the story of a melancholy man as he wanders sadly through the woods. This text is exquisitely illustrated by Brahms' use of word painting and lush harmonization. For Brahms the poet or poetry was not of the upmost importance, but rather the story that was told through each setting, calling forth his melodic genius. (See more in text.) ▼ Ce mémoire entend étudier les relations qui se forment entre hygiène sociale et théories esthétiques dans les grands projets de parcs urbains réalisés par l'architecte paysagiste Frederick Law Olmsted (1822-1903), durant la seconde moitié du XIXe siècle, en Amérique du Nord. En analysant les écrits de l'architecte paysagiste, il s'agit de démontrer comment l'expérience esthétique fut envisagée comme source de régénération morale pour la société urbaine en mutation. L'hypothèse avancée est que les idées d'Olmsted, que l'on a souvent associé à la figure de l'artiste romantique, reflètent plutôt un héritage complexe qui allie des horizons théoriques différents, en plus des influences couramment citées dans l'historiographie. Ainsi sont analysées les influences du philosophe écossais Henry Home, Lord Kames (1696-1782), et du philosophe et psychologue britannique Herbert Spencer (1820- 1903) sur le projet théorique du paysagiste américain. À travers l'exploration de ces nouveaux liens, un point de vue singulier sur l'environnement surgit, lequel nous permet de comprendre l'œuvre théorique du paysagiste comme une rationalisation de l'expérience esthétique liée à un paysage primitif idéalisé, qu'il vise à reproduire dans la ville. L'argumentation se concentre, malgré les différents axes théoriques abordés, sur l'unité que ceux-ci présentent par rapport à cet idéal commun d'une nature humaine profondément bonne, ainsi que du régime émotionnel qui lui est associé et qui permet de l'atteindre. Celui-ci se présente alors chez le paysagiste comme le pendant émotionnel de l'exercice physique couramment présenté comme l'un des principaux bénéfices de ces espaces récréatifs que sont les parcs publics au XIXe siècle, mais il s'agit d'un régime émotionnel primitivement associé à un caractère ou une constitution morale idéalisés. Olmsted aurait ainsi donné une inflexion esthétique inédite au mouvement d'hygiène sociale qui émerge alors en Amérique, et qui tend à se préoccuper de la santé autant psychologique que physiologique de la population. ____________________________________________________________________________ MOTS-CLÉS DE L’AUTEUR : Frederick Law Olmsted, parc public, architecture paysagère, primitivisme, expérience esthétique, hygiène sociale.

▼ Taking into account the Environmental Restorative Theory (ERT) , created by Fre derick Law Olmsted in mid XIX ce ntury , according which, urban parks can contribute to solve problems arisen from crowding , particularly urban stress, we analize how the ERT arrived at XXI century, having as approach the evaluation of New York Central Park (CP). Considering that the CP and the cinema were born around at the same, we question if the North American cinema produced between 1960 and 2013 show the ideals, which engendered the CP. By answering this question we defend the hypothesis that, even though has existed adjusts and modificati ons in the CP plan through time, it kept reasonably faithful to the ERT premises, propitiating to the XX and XXI centuries cinema identify and bring forth the presence of the Olmsted’s Ideals in the present days. The thesis main objective was nonetheless u nderstand similarities and/or differences between the XIX century ideals (that gave birth to CP) and the way the cinema represents the present uses of the place, taking into account that the Olmstedian ERT proposal have survived to the context changes (soc ial, economic, political and cultural). Methodologically , we drew upon bibliographical and documental analysis to build the first chapters and to the cinema as analytical lenses to investigate the ERT. The results point that although the CP plan has kept r elatively intact and faithful to the ERT – with the presence of natural elements in the films (notably vegetation and water) – many of contemporary behaviors were not foreseen previously, especially in relation to sports practice, the massive feminine pres ence, as well as criminality.
