▼ The aim of this dissertation is to examine a previously unstudied text – consumer card application web sites, which are aimed at disparate, competing consumer groups. Consumer card application web sites promote prepaid, secured, or traditional cards. These web sites serve as a starting point for the consumer’s online brand experience and initiate what the companies intend will be an active engagement between the consumer and the brand (Bart, Shankar, Sultan, & Urban, 2005). These web sites are framed to broadly communicate what the advertisers perceive are shared interests among a diverse target market. Within the promotional text, these web sites also address disparate audiences with distinct interests. Examining these web sites offers the opportunity to identify the aspirations the advertisers perceive are relevant to a fractured consumer market. Using aspiration as a lens, this study also seeks to understand how the American dream is encapsulated and enabled through these lender frames. This study uses Gamson and Modigliani’s (1989) approach to frame analysis to identify the broad frames used within and across the three card categories in order to understand how the advertisers seek to persuade a disparate target market. The frame analysis is followed by a discourse analysis, which seeks to drill deeper into the promotional material. Both the frame and discourse analyses identify fractured target markets whose interests were amalgamated based on their assumed participation in the mainstream banking and credit scoring systems. The results of this dissertation include a confirmation of the greatening socioeconomic divide in which consumer choice and limitations are increasingly defined by the larger financial infrastructures. This dissertation contributes both theoretically and practically to the study of advertising frames as well the examination of the promotional materials that proceed online applications for financial products. A presente tese teve como objetivo avaliar os desafios a serem enfrentados no desenvolvimento de recursos lexicais multilíngües segundo o paradigma FrameNet. Abordou-se aqui a Semântica de Frames com uma teoria da lingüística cognitiva e a forma como a FrameNet trata o conceito de frame semântico em sua base de dados. Para tratar dos desafios no uso de frames semânticos para a descrição de informação jurídica em diferentes línguas, optou-se por investigar o frame Criminal_process. Em um primeiro momento, identificaram-se, com o auxílio de um dicionário jurídico bilíngüe, os equivalentes em português das unidades lexicais do inglês relacionadas ao processo penal. Em um segundo momento, essas unidades lexicais foram contrastadas para verificar se o conhecimento jurídico evocado pela unidade lexical em inglês era o mesmo conhecimento jurídico evocado pelo seu equivalente em português. A abordagem contrastiva permitiu a criação de frames jurídicos descrevendo o processo penal brasileiro. Constatou-se que os frames semânticos apresentam diferentes níveis de equivalência. Este trabalho procurou explicar as divergências de frames semânticos por meio da diferenciação entre frames inatos e frames aprendidos. Uma vez que constatada a falta de equivalência perfeita de frames entre as línguas, é necessário se repensar o uso dos frames semânticos como interlíngua em recursos lexicais multilíngües, especialmente se esses recursos representarem conhecimento jurídico. Este trabalho apontou como uma possível solução para a falta de equivalência entre frames o uso de um recurso ainda pouco abordado pela FrameNet: os tipos semânticos. Os tipos semânticos poderiam ser utilizados em uma base de dados jurídica multilíngüe para marcar o papel social exercido por cada participante dos eventos jurídicos

This Ph.D. dissertation discusses the challenges to be faced in developing multilingual lexical resources according to the FrameNet paradigm. This work was based on Frame Semantics. The starting point was the Criminal_process frame. First, the equivalents in Portuguese for the lexical units were identified using a bilingual legal dictionary. Second, the lexical units were contrasted in order to verify the legal knowledge evoked by lexical units in English was the same legal knowledge evoked by their equivalents in Portuguese. Based on the contrastive study, legal frames representing the Brazilian legal system were created. This work could verify that semantic frames present different levels of equivalence. The differences in frame equivalence were analyzed according to the difference between innate and learned frames. Considering that the semantic frames do not present a perfect equivalence among languages, it is necessary to rethink the use of semantic frames as interlingual index to connect multilingual resources, especially legal lexical resources. This dissertation considers the possibility of using semantic types as a possible solution in a future.

▼ Designing effective health campaigns that can break through the clutter is critical. In today’s media saturated environment, the pervasiveness of the Internet, coupled with the increasing role of social media, is changing how people find, evaluate, and process information. Previous studies have examined the effects of narratives in health campaigns in light of their ability to implicitly affect the message recipient’s cognitive and affective reactions by conveying the real life experiences of an actual person. In addition, an extensive body of research has investigated the role of framing in health communication and has suggested that different health frames (gain vs. loss) have distinct effects for different types of health behaviors (prevention, detection, and cessation). Yet, health frames have been primarily examined in the context of traditional media such as print-based or videos. Finding effective ways to deliver health information is a challenge for health communicators since people are less motivated to exert cognitive effort during information processing due to the sheer amount of available information. Thus, employing powerful visuals has become essential in order to captivate people’s attention and make them more attentive to the advocated message. An important stream of research has investigated independently the role of visuals, framing, and narratives. Yet, there is paucity of research examining their combined effects in health messages. This dissertation seeks to address this gap by examining jointly the effects of narratives, frames, and visuals in promoting health messages. An online 2 (message type: narrative vs. informational) x 2 (health frames: gained-framed vs. loss-framed) x 2 (presentation format: visual vs. non visual) between-participants factorial experiment was conducted. Message type was operationalized by presenting health information in a narrative or factual fashion. Narratives conveyed health-related information through the eyes of the story’s protagonist, whereas informational messages included generic and statistical information relevant to the featured health issue, notably, sun protection and skin cancer. Message frames were operationalized in terms of gain- or loss-framed messages. A gain-framed message emphasized the advantages of performing the advocated health behavior, whereas the loss-framed message focused on the disadvantages stemming from failing to adopt the promoted health behavior. Presentation format was operationalized by presenting textual information independently or along with images that were in concert with the information included in the message. Participants were recruited from Amazon’s Mechanical Turk and were randomly assigned to one of the eight experimental conditions. After reading the health message, they were asked to answer questions about their attitudes toward the message and issue and to indicate their behavioral intentions both offline and online. ▼ The study presented here is focused on the seismic analysis of moment-resisting steel frames accounting for imperfections. Geometrical and material nonlinear effects are considered in the modeling of steel frames. The objectives of this research are to identify the main parameters affecting the response of moment-resisting steel frames under seismic actions. The effects of modeling problems and their accuracy in analyzing isolated imperfect columns and a simple imperfect steel portal frame were also examined by varying the number of elements per member. Two types of seismic analyses have been carried out by OpenSees for the steel frames considered in this research, these are nonlinear static and nonlinear dynamic analysis. Force-based distributed plasticity approaches were used for modeling of beam-column elements and fiber sections were assumed for modeling steel sections. Initial sway imperfections, residual stresses, and geometric nonlinear effects were considered for the global analysis of frames. The effects of lateral load distributions on the results of nonlinear static analysis have also been investigated by considering three different patterns of lateral load distribution: linear, modal and triangular. The results of the pushover analysis for the frames under consideration show that the lateral load distribution patterns have a greater effect than the magnitude of the loads applied to the structure. The effects of imperfections for moment-resisting sway frames are less than that of the second-order effects. Three verification examples are performed to demonstrate the capability of the OpenSees program in solving nonlinear problems in comparison with experimental results. These examples were analyzed by both OpenSees and SeismoStruct and the results were presented against experimental results. The second-order elastic analysis results for isolated columns show that the number of elements needed per member to model the cantilever column is lower than the pin ended column. A simple portal frame analyzed by modeling imperfections directly to the frame geometry and by replacing imperfections to equivalent lateral loads has no considerable difference between the results from these types of modeling imperfections. Les cadres a contrevenements concentriques (CCC) sont un des systemes fondamentaux coisis par les concepteurs de batiments de faible hauteur en acier pour la resistance aux charges laterales depuis le debut du vingtieme siecle. Les CCC construit selon les codes de batiments et standards des annees 1960 ont ete concus avec le principe qu'ils demeurent dans la zone d'elasticite lineaire. La philosophie de conception en vigeur dans le Code nationale de batiment 2010 et le CSA-S16-09 est base sur le principe de calcul par capacite et constate le comportement inelastique cyclique des CCC. Les batiments concus avec ces anciens codes n'avaient aucune exigence de detaillage ou conception particulier pour un comportement inelastique cyclique, donc il est probable que ces structures demontrent des deficiences sismiques, incluant un manque de resistance aux charges laterales et un manque de ductilite. Des principes pour l'evaluation de la performance des CCC sont requis pour fournir des recommandations opur l'evaluation sismique et des exigences pour la rehabilitation de ces structures existantes pour les futurs codes de batiment. Le comportement de structures d'un etage concus avec le Code nationale de batiment 1965 (NRCC 1965) et le CSA-S16-65 (CSA 1965) selon les normes sismiques des codes de batiment en vigeur a ete etudier pour aider a etablir ces recommandations. La performance d'une serie de seize batiments d'un etage avec des rapports d'aspect et hauteurs varies a ete etudiee, subie a dix enregistrements sismiques artificiels et historiques. Le comportement non-lineaire sismique des CCC a ete determine avec un modele analytique OpenSees, Open System for Earthquake Engineering Simulation (OpenSees 2011), pour des analyses non-lineaires dynamiques temporelles, incluant les demandes de deplacement et ductilite des contreventements. Le niveau de performance vise avec les seismes de conception, et les criteres d'acceptation dans l'analyse des cades contreventer a ete etablie avec FEMA P695 (FEMA 2009). Selon cette etude, en generale, meme si les criteres d'acceptation n'ont pas ete atteints dans tous les cas, les batiments d'un etage concu avec le Code nationale de batiment 1965 ont, en moyenne, performer bien pour les sept criteres d'evaluation soulignee dans cette etude.

Concentrically braced frames (CBFs) have been one of the fundamental structural systems for lateral force resistance chosen by designers for low-rise steel construction since the early part of the twentieth century. CBFs designed using the building codes and standards of the 1960s were designed using the principle that they remained in the linearly elastic range. The current design philosophy of the 2010 National Building Code of Canada (NBCC) and CSA-S16-09 is based on the principles of capacity design and recognises the cyclic inelastic behaviour of CBFs. ▼ ENGLISH ABSTRACT: Steel portal frame structures are traditionally designed in accordance with ultimate limit state criteria and then typically evaluated in terms of the serviceability limit state. The serviceability limit state often governs the design process, therefore it is important that appropriate deflection limits are used for the design of steel portal frames. The origin of deflection limits specified in some current codes of practice are unknown, while some codes do not even specify serviceability limit state deflections for portal frames, but rather leave the judgement of deflection limits to the engineer. The design of portal frame structures in accordance with certain deflection limits have no direct effect on the serviceability of the frame itself, however the deflection limits are used to protect the structure against other complicated serviceability demands. These demands include structural damage to non-structural members and connections as well as noticeable distressing deflections. When considering ultimate limit state, the definition of failure is fairly clear, however the distinction between serviceable and unserviceable are vague. It is therefore evident that the SCI advisory desk specified deflection limits, which are widely adopted, are mostly defined on experience. These specified limits may have a direct effect on the optimal weight and reliability of the structure. For the proposed study, a real-coded Genetic Algorithm which is part of the evolutionary algorithm family is used to determine the optimal or near optimal weight of steel portal frames. The proposed Genetic Algorithm based on the natural process, known as survival-of-the-fittest, selects the optimal universal beam section from a discrete set of available sections for columns and rafters. Furthermore, the algorithm will determine the optimal length of the haunch at the eaves as well as the optimal roof pitch. With the use of these four design variables, each portal frame has a possible 28.83 × 106 number of solutions. A total of 119 portal frames of different span to height ratios were optimised with the use of the proposed Genetic Algorithm. These 119 analyses were used to investigate the effect of the haunch length and roof pitch of the portal frame on the optimal weight. An overall average decrease in total weight of 9% were obtained when haunched rafters were used for portal frames. In terms of the roof pitch of portal frames, the conclusion was made that the roof pitch only has a significant effect on the optimal weight of portal frames with a span to height ratio larger than two. From the 119 analyses, 87% of the frames subjected to wind load were governed by the serviceability limit state. The reliability or safety index of each optimal steel portal frame will then be calculated with the use of the First Order Reliability Method (FORM), and compared to specified reliability values accepted in design codes of practice for ultimate and serviceability limit states. ▼ A finite (μ, Ѕ)-frame variety consists of the real or complex matrices F = [f1 … fn] with frame operator FF* = S, and which also satisfies ||fi|| = μi for all i = 1,...,N. Here, S is a fixed Hermitian positive definite matrix and μ = [μ1...μN] is a fixed list of lengths. These spaces generalize the well-known spaces of finite unit-norm tight frames. We explore the local geometry of these spaces and develop geometric optimization algorithms based on the resulting insights. We study the local geometric structure of the (μ, Ѕ)-frame varieties by viewing them as intersections of generalized tori (the length constraints) with distorted Stiefel manifolds (the frame operator constraint). Exploiting this perspective, we characterize the nonsingular points of these varieties by determining where this intersection is transversal in a Hilbert-Schmidt sphere. A corollary of this characterization is a characterization of the tangent spaces of (μ, Ѕ)-frame varieties, which is in turn leveraged to validate explicit local coordinate systems. Explict bases for the tangent spaces are also constructed. Geometric optimization over a (μ, Ѕ)-frame variety is performed by combining knowledge of the tangent spaces with geometric optimization of the frame operator distance over a product of spheres. Given a differentiable objective function, we project the full gradient onto the tangent space and then minimize the frame operator distance to obtain an approximate gradient descent algorithm. To partially validate this procedure, we demonstrate that the induced flow converges locally. Using Sherman-Morrision type formulas, we also describe a technique for constructing points on these varieties that can be used to initialize the optimization procedure. Finally, we apply the approximate gradient descent procedure to numerically construct equiangular tight frames, Grassmannian frames, and Welch bound equality sequences with low mutual coherence. ▼ In this dissertation, we investigate methods of modifying a tight frame sequence on a finite subset of the frame so that the result is a tight frame with better properties. We call this a surgery on the frame. There are basically three types of surgeries: transplants, expansions, and contractions. In this dissertation, it will be necessary to consider surgeries on not-necessarily-tight frames because the subsets of frames that are excised and replaced are usually not themselves tight frames on their spans, even if the initial frame and the final frame are tight. This makes the theory necessarily complicated, and richer than one might expect. Chapter I is devoted to an introduction to frame theory. In Chapter II, we investigate conditions under which expansion, contraction, and transplant problems have a solution. In particular, we consider the equiangular replacement problem. We show that we can always replace a set of three unit vectors with a set of three complex unit equiangular vectors which has the same Bessel operator as the Bessel operator of the original set. We show that this can not always be done if we require the replacement vectors to be real, even if the original vectors are real. We also prove that the minimum angle between pairs of vectors in the replacement set becomes largest when the replacement set is equiangular. Iterating this procedure can yield a frame with smaller maximal frame correlation than the original. Frames with optimal maximal frame correlation are called Grassmannian frames and no general method is known at the present time for constructing them. Addressing this, in Chapter III we introduce a spreading algorithm for finite unit tight frames by replacing vectors three-at-a-time to produce a unit tight frame with better maximal frame correlation than the original frame. This algorithm also provides a “good” orientation for the replacement sets. The orientation part ensures stability in the sense that if a selected set of three unit vectors happens to already be equiangular, then the algorithm gives back the same three vectors in the original order. In chapter IV and chapter V, we investigate two special classes of frames called push-out frames and group frames. Chapter VI is devoted to some mathematical problems related to the ”cocktail party problem ”. ▼ This study investigates the meaning construction processes in narratives based on theoretical assumptions of Cognitive Linguistics (CL), which supports the principle that the relationship between language and the world is mediated by cognition. It discusses, therefore, the idea that language is formed on the interaction between the human biological apparatus and cultural experience, basic components in the process of construction of meaning, as studied by Lakoff and Johnson (1999); Johnson (2007), and Damasio (2011). We argue specifically that human communicative interaction arises from the cognitive ability to construct narratives (TURNER, 1996, 2006; LAKOFF, 2008; LAKOFF and NARAYANAN, 2010) and to activate speech frames. These frames arise from the match between conceptual domains, structured by abstract descriptive schemes of space and movement (scheme-I and X-schemes) and communicative frames (dimensions of frames). This work also proposes a constructional analysis model of narrative and discourse, based on the description of the cognitive mechanisms that participate in the process of meaning construction in fabulous narratives. The research is qualitative and the method employed is introspective, which is guided by the views of the researcher (TALMY, 2005), but anchored in the theoretical premises of CL and compared to data collected in corpora. The corpora, in turn, consisted of a set of fables drawn from the works of Aesop (2006), Phaedrus (2001), La Fontaine ([2008?]), Monteiro Lobato (2008) and Sergio Caparrelli, and Marcia Schmaltz (2012). The analyses of these fables pointed to the centrality of frames (FILLMORE, 1977) and to the process of mental simulation (BARSALOU, 1999) in the meaning construction process in narratives. They also suggest that the social cognitive role of speech in social acculturation process (VAN DIJK, 2012) is basically structured in the combination of descriptive schemes and by the confrontation of discursive frames. Therefore, we consider, in this work, that storytelling is one of the most important cognitive mechanisms in the construction process and in the projection of real or fictitious experiences; and that the action of storytelling seems to lead us, as cognitive beings, to simulate attitudes, causes, effects and intentions of the ones involved in the story. We believe that this work can contribute to cognitive studies about the comprehension of texts, speeches and embodied grammar.
