▼ The interaction between light and matter is one that underscores many applications from solar energy conversion to optical sensing of biological materials. The use of multiple pulses to study these interactions are especially useful in understanding the nonlinear optical properties of materials. Transition metal dichalcogenides such as molybdenum disulfide (MoS2) are attractive materials due to the existence of a direct excitonic resonance that can be used to enhance nonlinear optical phenomena, such as Raman spectroscopy. Here, we have investigated
four-
wave mixing (FWM) processes in bulk MoS2 using a multiplex coherent anti-Stokes Raman spectroscopy setup. The observed FWM signal has a resonance at approximately 680 nm, corresponding to the energy of the A excitonic transition of MoS2. This resonance can be attributed to the increased third-order nonlinear susceptibility near the excitonic transition. This phenomenon shows the potential of MoS2 as a substrate for enhancing FWM processes. Understanding how particles and light interact in a liquid environment is vital for optical and biological applications. The interaction between two femtosecond pulses and MoS2 nanoparticles suspended in liquid is studied. The laser pulses induce bubble formation on the surface of a nanoparticle and a nanoparticle aggregate then forms on the surface of the trapped bubble. Two-dimensional organometallic lead halide perovskites are generating great interest due to their optoelectronic characteristics, such as a direct band gap in the visible regime. However, the presence of defect states within the crystal structure can affect these properties, resulting in changes to their emission and the emergence of nonlinear optical phenomena. Here, we have investigated the effects of the presence of defect states on the nonlinear optical phenomena of the hybrid perovskite (BA)2(MA)2Pb3Br10. When two pulses are incident on a perovskite flake, FWM occurs, with peaks corresponding to the defect energy levels present within the crystal. The longer lifetime of the defect state, in comparison to that of virtual transitions, allows for a larger population of electrons to be excited by the second pump photon, resulting in increased FWM signal at the defect energies. This technique has the potential to detect defect energy levels in bulk crystals using FWM.

A continuous, coherent radiation source in the vacuum ultraviolet spectral region is presented. It is based on four-wave-mixing in mercury vapor with fundamental beams at 253.7 nm, 407.9 nm und 545.5 nm wavelength. The fundamental beams are produced by frequency doubling and quadrupling of beams from solid-state laser-systems respectively. Due to the 61S-71S two-photon resonance and additionally the 61S-63P one-photon resonance the efficiency can be increased compared to former sources. A near one-photon resonance reduces the optimal phasematching temperature of the four-wave-mixing process. This leads to smaller Doppler and pressure broadening resulting in a higher four-wave-mixing efficiency. A maximum power of 0.3 nW at 121.56 nm…

▼ In this thesis, we have demonstrated wavelength conversion with low operation power in low loss Ta2O5 based micro-ring resonator. Based on a reflow process on the developed resist, the sidewall of waveguide device is optimized and becomes smooth. The propagation loss of ring resonator with diameter of 100μm is as low as 0.5cm
-1, and the gap between waveguide and ring cavity is set as 700nm. The corresponding loaded/unloaded Q are 50000/182000. It is a current record of Ta2O5 based micro-ring resonator. For nonlinear optical applications, the high efficient
four-
wave mixing conversion efficiency of -30dB has been achieved by using high quality factor Ta2O5 based micro-ring resonator at pump power of merely 6mW. With the ring resonator, the
four-
wave mixing conversion efficiency can be significantly enhanced by comparing to that of straight waveguide structure. In addition, the nonlinear refractive index (n2) of Ta2O5 at 1550nm is estimated to be 1.4Ã10
-14cm2/W, which is higher than other optical materials (For instance, SiO2, Si3N4, AlN and Hydexâ¦etc.). As a result, Ta2O5 based micro-ring resonator shows great potentials in developing chip-scale nonlinear photonics.

▼ Both linear and nonlinear spectroscopic techniques are used to investigate a single crystal of the blue phosphor Y2SiO5:Ce3+. In particular, excitation and emission spectra are measured at room temperature. Ultrafast two beam degenerate
four-wave mixing is used to investigate dephasing at room temperature. Numerical calculations of optical dephasing on a model system are performed within the optical Bloch model. Comparison of the model calculations with experimental results indicate
that the dephasing time of Y2SiO5:Ce3+ is considerably shorter than the pulsewidth of the laser pulses, i.e. 70 femtoseconds.

▼ In this thesis, loss optimization within Ta2O5 based micro-ring resonator was investigated. Two methods were proposed and studied. First, to reduce the absorption of N-H bond from PECVD growth SiO2 cladding laser, sputtering growth cladding was proposed. Here, using physical deposition sputter, SiO2 cladding deposition was used for avoiding absorption from NâH bonds. However, the inevitable micro-crack due to step coverage limit the loss performance. Second, by controlling the post annealing temperature and times, loss performance of the devices was investigated and improved successfully. The propagation loss of ring resonator with diameter of 100μm was reduced around 42% and with value as low as 0.44cm-1 after post annealing. The corresponding loaded and unload Q are around 52500 and 185000, respectively. Furthermore, the nonlinear applications such as
four-
wave mixing conversion was applied for confirming waveguide quality. Comparing to nondetective FWM signal from device before post annealing treatment, the FWM conversion efficiency of -39dB for the post annealed device has been achieved by using high quality factor Ta2O5 based micro-ring resonator at pump power of merely 4mW. This reveal the functionality of post annealing treatment for optimizing loss performance of waveguides.

▼ Photonic integration and all-optical signal processing are promising solutions to the increasing demand for high-bandwidth and high-speed communication systems. III-V semiconductor materials, specially AlGaAs, have shown potentials for photonic integration and efficient nonlinear processes due to their low nonlinear absorption, flexibility at controlling the refractive index, and mature fabrication technology.
In this thesis, we report the designs of AlGaAs microring resonators optimized for efficient four-wave mixing. Four-wave mixing (FWM) is a nonlinear optical phenomenon which can be used to realize many optical signal processing operations such as optical wavelength conversion and optical time division multiplexing and demultiplexing. Our designed AlGaAs microring resonators are expected to have good optical confinement, transmission characteristics, and efficient coupling between the ring and waveguide.
Here we also present our fabrication efforts to fabricate the microring resonators device and the insights gained in the process. The microring resonators devices have a potential to be used in optical communication networks for all-optical signal processing operations.

▼ This dissertation presents a detailed study in exploring quantum correlations of lights in macroscopic environments. We have explored quantum correlations of single photons, weak coherent states, and polarization-correlated/polarization-entangled photons in macroscopic environments. These included macroscopic mirrors, macroscopic photon number, spatially separated observers, noisy photons source and propagation medium with loss or disturbances.
We proposed a measurement scheme for observing quantum correlations and entanglement in the spatial properties of two macroscopic mirrors using single photons spatial compass state. We explored the phase space distribution features of spatial compass states, such as chessboard pattern by using the Wigner function. The displacement and tilt correlations of the two mirrors were manifested through the propensities of the compass states. This technique can be used to extract Einstein-Podolsky-Rosen correlations (EPR) of the two mirrors. We then formulated the discrete-like property of the propensity <i>P
b(m,n)</i>, which can be used to explore environmental perturbed quantum jumps of the EPR correlations in phase space. With single photons spatial compass state, the variances in position and momentum are much smaller than standard quantum limit when using a Gaussian TEM00 beam.
We observed intrinsic quantum correlations of weak coherent states between two parties through balanced homodyne detection. Our scheme can be used as a supplement to decoy-state BB84 protocol and differential phase-shift QKD protocol. We prepared
four types of bipartite correlations <i>±cos2(θ
12)</i> that shared between two parties. We also demonstrated bits correlations between two parties separated by 10 km optical fiber. The bits information will be protected by the large quantum phase fluctuation of weak coherent states, adding another physical layer of security to these protocols for quantum key distribution.
Using 10 m of highly nonlinear fiber (HNLF) at 77 K, we observed coincidence to accidental-coincidence ratio of 130±5 for correlated photon-pair and Two-Photon Interference visibility >98% entangled photon-pair. We also verified the non-local behavior of polarization-entangled photon pair by violating Clauser-Horne-Shimony-Holt Bell’s inequality by more than 12 standard deviations. With the HNLF at 300 K (77 K), photon-pair production rate about factor 3(2) higher than a 300 m dispersion-shifted fiber is observed. Then, we studied quantum correlation and interference of photon-pairs; with one photon of the photon-air experiencing multiple scattering in a random medium. We observed that depolarization noise photon in multiple scattering degrading the purity of photon-pair, and the existence of Raman noise photon in a photon-pair source will contribute to the depolarization affect. We found that quantum correlation of polarization-entangled photon-pair is better preserved than polarization-correlated photon-pair as one photon of…

▼ Modern high-performance signal processing applications face constantly increasing processing speeds. The use of photonics potentially offers a much higher bandwidth and faster processing than what can be achieved in the electronic domain. This thesis investigates novel photonic techniques based on optical mixing for performing a correlation, a common signal processing task. The first photonic correlation scheme investigated uses four wave mixing (FWM) in a length of highly nonlinear fibre (HNLF) to mix template or reference wavelengths with a pump wavelength, which has been modulated by an input bit stream in order to produce copies of the input signal at the output idler wavelengths. The idler wavelengths are differentially delayed and summed at a photoreceiver to produce a correlation of the input bit stream and the reference bit pattern. This technique was investigated experimentally and results show that a correlation function is successfully achieved. A significant advantage of this technique compared to previous photonic correlation techniques is that modulation of the pump wavelength allows the “transmitter†to be remotely located, away from the correlation signal processing equipment. An extension of this technique successfully demonstrated the use of software control of the reference bit pattern using a multi-port photonic signal processor (Waveshaper). This enabled a more versatile form of correlator. True correlation requires the summation of negative signals. This is difficult for optical signals. A novel photonic technique based on FWM, which allows negative accumulation, was proposed for the first time. In this technique, a number of carrier and pump wavelengths are carefully selected such that individual mixing products occur at the same idler wavelength. Subtraction of optical fields at this wavelength can be achieved by changing the relative phase of pump wavelengths by 90ï‚° using a Waveshaper optical processor. This novel concept was verified via a simulation using ‘VPItransmissionMaker 9.0’ software. The simulation demonstrated that negative accumulation of optical signals could be achieved for the first time. In summary, novel photonic correlation techniques based on nonlinear optical mixing in optical fibre have been demonstrated and subtraction of optical fields using FWM has been demonstrated for the first time.

▼ The wavelength-division multiplexing (WDM) is a well know technique capable of increasing the total capacity of a lightwave communication system; however, the system performance can be significantly limited by the dispersive and nonlinear effects, among others. This dissertation is mainly focused on the nonlinear effects upon the short-haul and long-haul lightwave systems. The short-haul lightwave system is mainly adopted in the access network. A passive optical access network is generally used to connect individual homes to a central office of a local area, and since there is no active component installed outside the central office of the passive optical access network, the system complexity and maintenance frequency can be significantly reduced. This dissertation provides a long-reach passive optical network (LR-PON) which can further reduce the system complexity and system cost. We found that
four-
wave mixing (FWM) and Rayleigh backscattering induced crosstalk were two main reasons to degrade the transmission performance in our proposed LR-PON.
The long-haul lightwave system is mainly adopted in the transoceanic application. Although differential phase-shit keying (DPSK) modulation format has been confirmed to be suitable for long-haul WDM system, we found that a performance dip can be observed near the system zero dispersion avelength. In this dissertation, we designed various experiments to confirm the nonlinear effect to cause the performance dip being observed, and concluded that self-phase modulation (SPM) was the dominant reason to cause the performance dip rather than cross-phase modulation (XPM) or nonlinear phase noise.

▼ In this work, high optical properties were grown by non-toxic magnetron sputter system, using XRD measurements and Micro-Raman spectrum, the crtstalline state of Ta2O5 were confirmed. The refractive index of the Ta2O5 thin film was around 2.1~2.08 and the extinction coefficient is extremely low. The optimized surface roughness as low as 0.12nm was obtained as annealing with three hours at temperature of 650ï°C, and the profile of cross section is extremely dense with no pinhole observed. We further estimated the crack density by using 30k X SEM image and no cracks were found. The n2 value of the thin film is as high as 3.5Ã10-12 cm2/W, Ta2O5 provide an novel option for FWM-OPO. In our calculation, we estimated the dispersion contribution from bulk material and waveguide. By verified the past work by other team data to confirm the correctness of our motheds. We also calculate in our Ta2O5 case and obtained the dispersion curve. In the fabrication process, we havenât obtained the best quality of Micro-Ring structure. As the result, the hint were proposed to optimize the quality of our devices.

▼ Recently, nonlinearity of material has been demonstrated in photonic integrated circuits, including all optical modulation, frequency combs, and
four-
wave mixing. Typically, materials with high nonlinearity, device with high optical quality and dispersion compensation are important issue. In this thesis, using high optical quality Ta2O5 as waveguide material, high Q micro-ring with U- shaped channel waveguide was developed. The Q as high as 85000 was achieved when the diameter of micro-ring resonator and the gap between the waveguide and ring cavity are 100 ïm and 1100 nm, respectively. The corresponding unloaded Q is over 100000. Additionally, the chromatic dispersion of Ta2O5 waveguide has been theoretically investigated. To compensate the material dispersion from Ta2O5, various dimension of the waveguide with air or SiO2 cladding were analyzed. The preliminary result shows that waveguide with dimension of TE1000Ã800nm2 and cladding of air exhibit the anomalous dispersion. Meanwhile, the estimated flat and near-zero dispersion of chromatic dispersion curve is expected to optimize the conversion efficiency as well as conversion bandwidth of FWM-OPO process in the Ta2O5 waveguide.

▼ Superconducting quantum circuit models are widely used to understand superconducting devices. This thesis consists of four studies wherein the superconducting quantum circuit is used to illustrate challenges related to quantum information encoding and processing, quantum simulation, quantum signal detection and amplification. The existence of scalar Aharanov-Bohm phase has been a controversial topic for decades. Scalar AB phase, defined as time integral of electric potential, gives rises to an extra phase factor in wavefunction. We proposed a superconducting quantum Faraday cage to detect temporal interference effect as a consequence of scalar AB phase. Using the superconducting quantum circuit model, the physical system is solved and resulting AB effect is predicted. Further discussion in this chapter shows that treating the experimental apparatus quantum mechanically, spatial scalar AB effect, proposed by Aharanov-Bohm, can't be observed. Either a decoherent interference apparatus is used to observe spatial scalar AB effect, or a quantum Faraday cage is used to observe temporal scalar AB effect. The second study involves protecting a quantum system from losing coherence, which is crucial to any practical quantum computation scheme. We present a theory to encode any qubit, especially superconducting qubits, into a universal quantum degeneracy point (UQDP) where low frequency noise is suppressed significantly. Numerical simulations for superconducting charge qubit using experimental parameters show that its coherence time is prolong by two orders of magnitude using our universal degeneracy point approach. With this improvement, a set of universal quantum gates can be performed at high fidelity without losing too much quantum coherence.Starting in 2004, the use of circuit QED has enabled the manipulation of superconducting qubits with photons. We applied quantum optical approach to model coupled resonators and obtained a four-wave mixing toolbox to operate photons states. The model and toolbox are engineered with a superconducting quantum circuit where two superconducting resonators are coupled via the UQDP circuit. Using fourth order perturbation theory one can realize a complete set of quantum operations between these two photon modes. This helps open a new field to treat photon modes as qubits. Additional, a three-wave mixing scheme using phase qubits permits one to engineer the coupling Hamiltonian using a phase qubit as a tunable coupler.Along with Feynman's idea using quantum to simulate quantum, superconducting quantum simulators have been studied intensively recently. Taking the advantage of mesoscopic size of superconducting circuit and local tunability, we came out the idea to simulate quantum phase transition due to disorder. Our first paper was to propose a superconducting quantum simulator of Bose-Hubbard model to do site-wise manipulation and observe Mott-insulator to superfluid phase transition. The side-band cooling of an array of superconducting resonators is solved after the paper was published. In…

▼ Single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWNTs) are often considered the prototypical nanomaterial with their characteristic large aspect ratios, high tensile strength and size tunable physical properties. While their remarkable electrical and mechanical properties have been well studied, the optical properties of semiconducting SWNTs are continuously emerging with recently reported developments such as greatly enhanced fluorescence yields and highly efficient nanotube photodiodes. The scope of optoelectronic applications for SWNTs depends critically on a detailed understanding of their highly congested absorption features consisting of strongly bound excitonic (E11, E22, etc.), vibronic and dark state transitions. Until recently, carbon nanotubes consisted of highly inhomogeneous distributions of tubes types that made advanced spectroscopic studies impractical. Enabled by samples highly enriched in specific tube types, we investigate carbon nanotubes photophysics in real-time by applying a wide range of techniques including transient absorption, photon echo and 2D Fourier transform spectroscopy. Through detailed analysis and simulation of these femtosecond nonlinear results, fundamental properties concerning excitonic structure, exciton-phonon interactions, and the dynamics of coherent excitons for these quasi one-dimensional nanomaterials are revealed.Population relaxation dynamics in SWNTs are probed from the visible to mid-infrared regions using transient absorption or grating spectroscopy. Measurements in mid-IR region reveal a broad excited state absorption feature consistent with previously unobserved intra-excitonic transitions and bound vibrational states. Simulation of visible and near-IR transient absorption results suggest efficient exciton-exciton annihilation occurring by both one-dimensional diffusion or delocalized overlap of coherent excitons depending upon the timescale, state transitions, or temperature investigated (4.4 to 292 K). Throughout all the measurements reported, strong contributions from exciton-exciton scattering processes are evident. The timescales for pure optical dephasing (and the corresponding homogeneous lineshape) were obtained through photon echo measurements. Surprisingly long room temperature dephasing times of 285 fs are reported, suggesting unusually weak exciton-phonon coupling and an inhomogeneously broadened absorption lineshape. At lower temperatures the dephasing induced by SWNT optical phonons is mitigated, and we show how acoustic phonon processes and environmental disorder determines the absorption line-shape properties.

▼ Confinement of electron-hole pairs (excitons) in semiconductor quantum dots (QDs) leads to novel quantum phenomena, tunable optical properties and enhanced Coulomb interactions, all of which are sensitive to the size, shape and material composition of the QDs. This thesis discusses our pursuit in unraveling the complex interrelation between morphology of a QD and its electronic and optical properties. A series of epitaxially-grown semiconductor nanostructures with different QD sizes and composition is studied using optical two-dimensional coherent spectroscopy (2DCS). With the unique capabilities of unambiguously identifying coupling between resonances, isolating quantum pathways and revealing homogeneous dephasing information in heterogeneous systems, 2DCS is a powerful tool for studying QD ensembles. Of paramount importance is the exciton homogeneous line width, which is inversely proportional to the dephasing time. As the dephasing time sets the duration for which coherence is maintained, knowledge of the principal dephasing mechanisms in QDs is essential. 2D spectra of excitons in weakly-confining GaAs QDs reveal that elastic exciton-phonon coupling and intra-dot exciton-exciton interactions are responsible for line width broadening beyond the radiative limit, and the interaction strength of both mechanisms increases for decreasing QD size. These results are compared to those obtained from InAs QDs, which exhibit an order-of-magnitude larger confinement, to illustrate the role quantum confinement plays in exciton dephasing. The lowest energy optical transitions in semiconductor QDs are modified by confinement-enhanced Coulomb interactions, such as exchange-mediated coupling between excitons and correlation effects that can lead to bound and anti-bound states of two excitons. 2D spectra particularly sensitive to these interactions reveal that the electron and hole
wave functions – and therefore the strength of Coulomb interactions – are sensitive to variations in QD size for the GaAs ensemble. In the InAs QDs, however, the
wave functions are remarkably independent of the details of confinement, leading to similar electronic and optical properties for all QDs. To provide additional insight, the spectra are modeled using perturbative density matrix calculations, and the results are compared to many-body calculations to reveal the significance of the strength and nature of Coulomb interactions on the optical properties of QDs.

▼ Metallic nanoparticles support collective oscillations of conduction-band electrons, in response to light incidences. Such phenomenon is called localized surface plasmons, which confine large electromagnetic fields in sub-wavelength dimensions, enabling the light manipulation at the nanoscale. Plasmonic nanoparticles have established many promising applications, such as infrared photodetections, photothermal generation steam, chemical photocatalysis, cancer therapy and surface-enhanced spectroscopy. More interesting, plasmonic nanostructures could generate strong nonlinear-optical effects by relatively low excitation powers, and have been widely used in different processes like second-harmonic generations (SHG), difference-frequency generation (DFG), third-harmonic generation (THG), optical
four-
wave mixing (FWM) and surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS).
This thesis will focused on two types of second-order and two types of third-order nonlinear-optical processes, enhanced by artificial plasmonic nanostructures. Firstly, the second-harmonic generation on a single nanocup is studied, and the signal is demonstrated to have increasing intensity as the 3D symmetry of the nanocup is reduced. Then, optical
four-
wave mixing is generated on a plasmonic nanocluster which supports a coherent oscillation of two Fano resonances. The electric fields from both Fano resonances add coherently resulting in strong fields and correspondingly large signals. This nanocluster has a large color-conversion efficiency, and could be used for building blocks of optical processors that convert two input colors into a third color. Later, one specific application of
four-
wave mixing, the coherent anti-Stokes Raman scattering (CARS) is studied. By exploiting the unique light harvesting properties of a Fano resonance of a specially designed nano-quadrumer, the surface-enhanced CARS (SECARS) technique amplifies the Raman signals of molecules on the quadrumer by about 100 billion times. This enables the accurate identification of a single molecule with less than 20 atoms. Finally, a plasmon-enhanced optical parametric amplifier (OPA) is designed: A BaTiO3 nanosphere is used as the nonlinear OPA medium; A nanoshell wrapping this nanosphere is used as a triply resonant cavity for all the pump, signal and idler beams; The generated idler beam has a wide tuning range in the near-infrared by changing the delay between the narrowband pump beam and broadband signal beam. This surface-plasmon-enhanced OPA could be an efficient light source working in the infrared regime, with large wavelength tunabilities and nanoscale dimensions easily integrated into the next-generation optoelectronic devices.

▼ Polarization-entangled photon pair states (PESs) are indispensable in several quantum protocols that should be implemented in an integrated photonic circuit for realizing a practical quantum technology. Preparing such states in integrated waveguides is in fact a challenge due to polarization mode dispersion. Unlike other conventional ways that are plagued with complications in fabrication or in state generation, in this thesis, the scheme based on parallel spontaneous
four-
wave mixing processes of two polarization waveguide modes is thoroughly studied in theory and experimentation for the polarization entanglement generation. The scheme in fact needs the modal dispersion, contradictory to the general perception, as revealed by a full quantum mechanical framework. The proper modal dispersion balances the effects of temporal walk-off and state factorizability. The study also shows that the popular standard platform such as a silicon-on-insulator wafer is far from suitable to implement the proposed simple generation technique.
Proven by the quantum state tomography, the technique produces a highly-entangled state with a maximum concurrence of 0.97 from AlGaAs waveguides. In addition, the devices directly generated Bell states with an observed fidelity of 0.92 without any post-generation compensating steps.
Novel suspended device structures, including their components, are then investigated numerically and experimentally characterized in pursuit of finding the geometry with the optimal dispersion property. The 700 nmx1100 nm suspended rectangular waveguide is identified as the best geometry with a predicted maximum concurrence of 0.976 and a generation bandwidth of 3.3 THz. The suspended waveguide fabrication procedure adds about 15 dB/cm and 10 dB/cm of propagation loss to the TE and TM mode respectively, on top of the loss in corresponding full-cladding waveguides. Bridges, which structurally support the suspended waveguides, are optimized using the particle swarm algorithm to maximize the power transmission, and they were experimentally verified.
This work greatly simplifies the generation of the PES and identifies a novel device structure suitable for such the PES generation. In combination with the reported promising advances in interferometric components and single photon detectors implemented in AlGaAs, the result of this thesis represents a step toward realizing a complete integrated quantum photonic circuit empowered by polarization-based protocols.

▼ Probing the interactions between a mode-locked laser pulse and saturated rubidium vapor
with a pump–probe technique has resulted in observations of coherences within the atom
that persist longer than 150 ps. Quantum beats due to the interference between the 7S

four-
wave mixing process. The difference
frequency between the 5D–5P
3/2 and the 5P
3/2–5S transitions was also observed for
interpulse delays up to 180 ps. The temporal evolution of the beat amplitude indicates the
existence of a superfluorescent process and a scattering process detected simultaneously

▼ Beginning with the discovery of graphene, two-dimensional materials have amassed a strong interest. Like graphene, transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) can be coaxed into atomically thin sheets which have some impressive properties. Unlike graphene, TMDs also has a change in their electronic band structure causing an indirect band gap to a direct gap transition in its monolayer form. Additionally, these materials lose their inversion symmetry as a monolayer. These unique properties make TMDs a strong candidate for being used in optoelectronic and valleytronic devices. In order for these devices to be successful, the optical properties of TMDs must be thoroughly understood. Due to this class of material's strong Coulomb interaction, the optical properties are dominated by excitons, a quasiparticle made up of an electron-hole pair. Therefore, the success of these devices relies, in part, on understanding and manipulating excitons. One key parameter of excitons is their dephasing rate which characterizes the lifetime of the coherent superposition of two states (i.e. how the coherence decays which is caused by excitons interacting with their environment). In this work, two optical properties are investigated: (1) How the linear absorption of the TMDs A-exciton peak varies as the material increases in thickness. By looking at how the absorption varies by sample thickness, the interaction between emitters can be understood. Experimental results for the diamagnetic shift are presented which are used to determine the lateral excitonic size. Through theoretical calculations, based on the semiconductor Maxwell-Bloch equations, additional insight into the radiative coupling of the systems are obtained. (2) How the coherence prole of the exciton changes in the presence of an external magnetic eld and specic valley excitation. By varying the polarization scheme in the four wave mixing measurement, specic valley excitation can be selected, allowing for insight into the dephasing mechanisms. By applying an external magnetic eld, the energy levels of the electron and hole can be discretized and the corresponding eects on the system's coherence seen. In conjunction with time-dependent density function theory calculations and the experimental results, a deeper understanding of exciton dynamics and multi-exciton complexes was obtained. Finally, a new system is proposed in which complex spectroscopic techniques can be performed on micron sized samples as well as devices in the presence of an external magnetic eld at cryogen temperatures. This system will allow for the investigation of the optical properties of stacked monolayers (heterostructures) as well as devices.

▼ Metal halide perovskite (MHP) thin films are currently undergoing an intense re- search thrust due to the excellent performance of MHP based photovoltaic (PV) devices, which have the potential to revolutionize the worlds energy production via a unique combination of low-cost fabrication and high power conversion efficiency (PCE). However, the vast majority of research is currently aimed at incremental improvements in device PCE, resulting in a body of work without the foundational understanding of the charge-carrier dynamics of the system upon photoexcitation.
This thesis begins with the development of a phase-modulated multidimensional coherent spectroscopy (PM-MDCS) experiment. PM-MDCS is an ultrafast multidi- mensional coherent spectroscopy (MDCS) technique that can identify photophysical processes unavailable to one-dimensional spectroscopies. The thesis then goes on to describe the development of a novel data acquisition scheme and data process- ing technique, diagonal slice
four-
wave mixing (DS-FWM). Next, a description of calibrating the absolute phase in PM-MDCS experiments is presented. Finally, the thesis discusses the application of steady-state photoluminescence (PL), MDCS, and DS-FWM to study the charge-carrier dynamics in MHP thin films at 5K. These studies provide crucial information to building a fundamental understanding of the photophysical processes in MHP films under illumination, providing direction for targeted research toward improved MHP PV performance.
A novel technique for collection of PM-MDCS data, and analysis of all MDCS data, DS-FWM succeeds where other MDCS lineshape analyses have failed, analyti- cal separation of broadening mechanisms in MDCS data. This technique significantly shortens data acquisition time for time-domain coherent spectroscopies, such as PM- MDCS, and provides direct access to relevant material paramters, such as the pure dephasing rate in the studied system, without the need for any assumptions.
Phasing PM-MDCS spectra is a central concern because the interpretation of spectra rely critically on the phase. We developed a method of calibrating the absolute phase in PM-MDCS that reconstructs all phase contributions to the signal and removes all but the phase of the material response.
The PM-MDCS data presented on MHP thin films clearly show long-lived exci- tons in the system, the existence of which has long been debated in the literature, with surprisingly long dephasing times up to ~ 1 ps. These excitons show clear in- homogeneous broadening, likely due to the large amount of disorder intrinsic to the MHP system, disproving a widely cited finding in the literature that the emission of the MHP system is homogeneously broadened and the system is well ordered. The data also show multiple isolated states that appear as one peak in steady-state PL data, likely due to defect states in the imperfect MHP lattice. PM-MDCS has the capability to disentangle spectrally broad resonances in ways that steady-state mea- surements cannot, allowing the…

▼ The preparation of single photons in a pure quantum state is a subject of great interest in physics, enabling the control of light at an unprecedented level. The ease with which certain degrees of freedom of photon states, such as polarisation, can be manipulated, along with the inherent resilience of photons to decoherence, makes them well suited for use as qubits. Recent rapid developments in the transmission and processing of quantum information, as well as the likely technological impact of potential real-world applications such as quantum cryptography and quantum computation, mean that the demand for high performance single photon sources is likely to increase in the near future. One approach to producing single photon states, which are known to be in a well-defined spatio-temporal mode without destructively measuring them, is to take advantage of nonlinear optics. Nonlinear processes can be used to realise frequency conversion by generating a single, correlated pair of photons from an intense pump laser source. The detection of one of the photons from a pair can then be used to indicate the presence of the other photon in the pair, a procedure known as heralding. This thesis describes the development of a source of heralded single photons at 1550 nm, generated directly in the core of a photonic crystal fibre (PCF). By taking advantage of low loss fibre components for the required spectral filtering of the generated photon state, a heralding fidelity of 52% was achieved. The source was designed to be used with a picosecond pulsed fibre laser, making it relatively low cost and maintenance free. With 148 mW of average pump power a heralded output photon rate of 6.4 × 104 s-1 was observed, demonstrating the brightness of the source. The purity of the generated single photons was established by measuring non-classical interference, with a visibility of 70%, between the photons output from this source and a source based on a PPLN waveguide. The fabrication of a series of birefringent PCFs for the generation of spectrally pure state photons at 1550 nm is also discussed. These PCFs will be useful for incorporation in the next generation of high performance, fibre-based photon sources.

▼ In this dissertation a combination of experimental and computational techniques are used to investigate the interaction of high intensity ultrashort pulses with nonlinear optical materials and devices. In particular, degenerate four-wave
mixing in the forward two-pulse geometry was combined with the numerical solution to the optical Bloch equations to extract an electronic dephasing time in the infrared absorbing organic dye IR140. Additionally, finite difference time-domain simulations
were used to investigate the reflective properties of three dielectric structures, a quarter-wave dielectric stack, a continuously varying rugate and a discretely varying rugate for the case of high intensity ultrashort pulses. Finally a combination of
linear and nonlinear spectroscopies were used to investigate the optical properties of green fluorescent protein. Ab initio and semi-empirical quantum chemistry techniques were used as an aid to interpreting the experimental data.

▼ My thesis is a theoretical and numerical investigation of the feasibility of enhancing the four wave mixing bandwidth by tuning the phase matching condition via stimulated Brillouin scattering. This technique was experimentally demonstrated in 2013 by introducing the amplitude and phase optical gain/loss frequency responses of stimulated Brillouin scattering (SBS) pump and Stokes waves onto the FWM pump or the FWM signal. Both SBS amplitude and phase responses originate from modifying the refractive index of the optical fibre while the FWM interaction takes place. As a result the FWM phase-matching condition and hence the signal gain can be flexibly controlled. The theoretical investigation was carried out with both processes considered separately. In this thesis, we show that with modest optical power, exponential gain is achievable for normal dispersion, which leads to a gain bandwidth which is comparable in size to that for anomalous dispersion without SBS. This is equivalent to a sign change of the nonlinear contribution to the phase matching condition. However the method is limited by SBS-induced power variations and by the need to limit the SBS power levels. The thesis is illustrated while using highly nonlinear silica fibre, a well-known platform for efficient gain in telecommunications as an example. Our results can be equally applied to other materials and to other geometries, for example that of chalcogenide photonic chips, which is an interesting and exciting platform for all-optical signal processing devices. This platform is considered in Chapter 3.

▼ This dissertation presents the results of development
of a picosecond
four wave mixing technique and its use for electric
field measurements in nanosecond pulse discharges. This technique
is similar to coherent anti-Stokes Raman spectroscopy and is well
suited for electric field measurements in high pressure plasmas
with high spatial and temporal resolution. The results show that
the signal intensity scales proportionally to the square of the
electric field, the signal is emitted as a coherent beam, and is
polarized parallel to the electric field vector, making possible
electric field vector component measurements. The signal is
generated when a collinear pair of pump and Stokes beams, which are
generated in a stimulated Raman shifting cell (SRS), generate
coherent excitation of molecules into a higher energy level,
hydrogen for the present work. The coherent excitation mixes with a
dipole moment induced by an external electric field. The
mixing of
these three ``waves'' allows the molecules to radiate at their
Raman frequency, producing a fourth, signal,
wave which is
proportional to the square of the electric field. The time
resolution of this technique is limited by the coherence decay time
of the molecules, which is a few hundred picoseconds.

▼ Silicon based electronics revolutionized the second
half of the 20th centenary. Moore’s law has been successfully
predicting the growth of integrated circuits for more than 40
years, but the trend has slowed down. To keep meeting with the ever
so strong demands, new breakthroughs are keenly needed. With the
inspiring success of optical communication technology, many
researchers believe this breakthrough relies on bringing optics
onto silicon chips. This leads to the study of silicon photonics.
All optical switches are one of the versatile components in silicon
photonics. In optical interconnections, where on chip metal wires
are replaced by waveguides, it can route the signals to the right
destination. Compared with traditional optical switches, an all
optical switch requires less power and generates less heat, which
qualities are highly valued for large data center and high
performance computing applications. In the future optical computing
systems, it can serve as the logic gates. It is also likely to find
its place in the more advanced quantum communication networks. An
electrically pumped on silicon chip laser is another fundamental
component for silicon photonics. A semiconductor laser that can be
reliably grown on silicon is not satisfactorily found. In this
thesis, we demonstrate two promising devices that is useful for
silicon photonics: A low noise all optical switch based on a third
order nonlinear effect and a GeSn laser material that can be
monolithically deposited onto silicon.

In this thesis we investigated and developed
three- and four-wave interaction-based frequency conversion methods
for ultrashort pulse generation in the ultraviolet (UV), near and
mid-infrared (IR) spectral ranges. In particular, efficient
generation of Nd:glass laser harmonics was demonstrated
experimentally, through noncollinear four-wave difference-frequency
mixing in isotropic media. Also, broadband optical parametric
amplification in the UV was investigated theoretically and achieved
experimentally. The results suggest, that pulses as short as 10 fs
could be amplified. We have also developed two methods based on
three- and four-wave mixing, that extend the tuning range of a
commercial Ti:sapphire laser-NOPA system in the IR. The first
method relies on four wave frequency down-conversion, and can
achieve up to 20 μJ, sub-30-fs pulses tunable in the 1−1.5 μm
range. The second method considers frequency conversion, based on
difference frequency generation and optical parametric
amplification in BBO crystals. The presented setup delivers two
optical-cycle, carrier-envelope phase (CEP)-stable pulses at 2 μm.
And finally, we demonstrated supercontinuum generation by
filamentation of 20 fs pulses at 2 μm in wide-bandgap solids in the
regime of anomalous group velocity dispersion. We also proposed the
practical use of intrinsic third harmonic generation, for the CEP
stability measurements.

▼ This thesis deals with the development of new sources of ultrashort pulses in
the vacuum-UV (VUV) spectral regime. These sources fill the gap between the
UV- and XUV-spectral regime where sources of ultrashort pulses are already
available. The newly developed sources will enable time-resolved spectroscopy
in the VUV spectral range. The sources are based on three-,
four- and six-
wave
mixing processes in nonlinear optical crystals or noble gases. For the first
time, an efficient second harmonic generation in a nonlinear crystal
generating 121nm pulses could be demonstrated. For this propose, a polydomain
strontium tetraborate crystal (SBO) was used. The different domains with
random thicknesses and alternating sign of the effective nonlinearity allowed
random quasi-phase matching (RQPM) of the frequency conversion. Due to the
RQPM continuous tuning of the SH wavelength was possible between 121 nm and
172 nm. Pulse energies of 600 pJ were achieved by SHG of the third harmonic of
the Ti-sapphire. The so far unknown refractive index of SBO in the VUV was
calculated from the measured SH spectra by a new algorithm applicable despite
large group-velocity and phase mismatch. A second VUV source generating
tunable fs-pulses with energies up to 90 nJ at a repetition rate of 1 kHz and
pulse durations below 45fs employs a noncollinear
four-
wave mixing scheme.
Mixing the third harmonic of a Ti-sapphire laser (266nm) with the signal of an
OPA (1150 nm − 1550 nm) generates pulses between 147 nm and 151 nm. The
nonlinear medium was either krypton or argon. Argon was also used for a
another VUV source which generates the third harmonic of 400 nm pulses. The
pulses deep in the VUV spectral regime with a wavelength of about 133 nm had a
duration of 55 fs and energies of almost 1 µJ at a repetition rate of 1 kHz.
Numerical simulations and the observed annular VUV beam profile indicate a
six-
wave mixing process as origin of the efficient frequency conversion.
Finally, the ultrashort, tunable VUV source was used to investigate non-
adiabatic coupling of highly excited states of nitric oxide by time-resolved
photoelectron spectroscopy. Three temporally oscillating photoelectron signals
were observed. Two of them are explained by non-adiabatic coupling between a
valence and a Rydberg state. The third oscillation is assigned to coupling
between two Rydberg states.

In ersten Messungen
A narrow-band continuous wave coherent Lyman-α source based on solid state laser systems is presented for future cooling of antihydrogen. These fundamental solid state laser systems enable the novel maximum use, not only of the 61S – 71S-two-photon-resonance of mercury, but also of the 61S – 63P-one-photon-resonance to enhance the conversion efficiency of the four-wave-mixing-process used to produce Lyman-α. In the first measurements 0.063nW of Lyman-α were produced. Through small detuning of the first fundamental laser from the one-photon-resonance, this Lyman-α source facilitates the first scan across the complete phase matching curve of the four-wave-mixing-process.
In addition to these fundamental laser systems and generation of Lyman-α radiation, the detection of the produced radiation by a photomultiplier is described. This detection has been optimized to allow a reliable estimate of the produced Lyman-alpha power. For the same purpose, a testing apparatus was built to measure the transmissivity of the lens and the filters at 121.56nm used in the Lyman-α source.
Furthermore a versatile calculation is presented and used to calculate the produced power at Lyman-alpha dependence on temperature, the absorption coefficient of the first fundamental laser beam, the density profile of the mercury vapor and the influence of a buffer gas.

In this thesis, the development and experimental realization of a continuous, coherent light source in the vacuum ultraviolet wavelength domain around 122 nm is presented. It is based on the optical nonlinear sum-frequency generation of three fundamental laser beams within a mercury-vapor filled hollow core fiber. The choice of the fundamental wavelengths is based upon the level structure of mercury, to achieve a multi-resonant enhancement of the nonlinear susceptibility. The transverse confinement of the lightfields elongates the interaction region with the nonlinear medium by several orders of magnitude, giving rise to a significant increase of the mixing efficiency.rnrnApart from an extensive mathematical analysis of the nonlinear mixing process under the influence of the fiber characteristics, an apparatus for the generation and detection of vacuum ultraviolet radiation has been developed in the course of this thesis.…
