The Flex-to-Rigid (F2R) technology platform is an interconnect platform to integrate heterogeneous electronic systems and devices onto a partially flexible chip for minimally invasive medical instruments. This technology platform allows for the integration of micro electro-mechanical systems (MEMS) and integrated circuits (IC) on a chip in a planar plane, which can later be folded into any arbitrary shape. Downscaling of the technology and the increasing number of integrated components in the F2R platform have a high impact on the power distribution and consequently on the signal integrity. It is widely accepted that one of the most powerful strategies to encounter signal integrity problems is to use decoupling capacitors. However, there is an inherent trade-off between the capacitance and size of a capacitor. This thesis is focused on the development on high density capacitors for the integration in the F2R technology platform. One of the objectives was to increase the capacitance density. Because there is limited space available on the F2R chip, additional area to increase the capacitance is found in the depth of the silicon. By etching multiple trenches into the silicon, a capacitance density increase by a factor of 10 is obtained. To even further increase the capacitance, the use of a silicon dioxide – silicon nitride – silicon dioxide multilayer (ONO) dielectric is reviewed. Moreover, a first step has been made in the fabrication of high breakdown voltage and low breakdown voltage parts in this dielectric layer. A second objective was to deliver the capacitors as a ‘’building block’’ that can be implemented in the F2R process flow. Therefore, the process needs to be compatible with the standard IC and MEMS technologies that are available in the Philips Innovation Service cleanroom. The steps of the fabrication process are verified and where needed optimized, and a dedicated mask set is designed for the fabrication of the capacitors. With this mask set, the so called trench capacitors have been made. These test devices are characterized in terms of breakdown voltage and capacitance. It is found that the capacitance density can be increased by an order of magnitude with the introduction of trenches to the test devices. In addition, the advantage of a multilayer dielectric compared to a single layer dielectric is shown.

▼ An experiment with Roundup Ready Flex� cotton was started in 2006 at the South Central Research Station near Chickasha, OK. The purpose of this research was to measure weed species composition and cotton yield in a continuous long-term experiment comparing glyphosate and conventional herbicide treatments. The experimental design was a randomized complete block design with 16 herbicide treatments replicated four times. Plot size was 12 rows (1.0 m per row spacing) X 30.5 m long. All weed counts and harvest data were collected from the four center rows of each plot. All herbicides used were applied at the labeled rates. The weeds that were most common in the experiment were johnsongrass, Palmer amaranth, and common cocklebur, and on drier years, silverleaf nightshade. Weed counts were taken after all treatments were applied. Cotton yield data were collected on all plots that were harvestable, except in 2011, no plots were harvested due to severe drought. Herbicides which were used in various combinations from 2006 through 2009 included trifluralin (PPI), prometryn (PRE), pyrithiobac (PRE and POST), glyphosate (POST), metolachlor (POST), and an untreated check. In 2010 and 2011, the entire experimental area was treated with a PPI application of trifluralin, and then a POST 1 application of glyphosate (various Monsanto formulations) on an as needed basis followed by a POST 2 and POST 3 application of glyphosate. Conventional herbicides applications from 2006 through 2009 did not control common cocklebur nor Palmer amaranth; therefore, those plots were not harvested. Data collected from 2006 through 2009 showed that eight of the 16 treatments were not harvested due to high populations of common cocklebur and Palmer amaranth. In 2010 the best management practices were trifluralin (PPI) followed by glyphosate (POST 2 and POST 3) and trifluralin (PPI) followed by glyphosate (POST 1, POST 2, and POST 3) provided effective weed control and all plots were harvested. The best management practices selected in 2010 successfully controlled the targeted weeds and allowed for a uniform cotton lint yield over the entire experiment area for the first time in experiment's history. Data from 2011 shows that cotton did not canopy over exposed soil in the row due to lack of water and abnormally hot and dry conditions; therefore there was noticeable increase in silverleaf nightshade in both of the treatments. Além disso, o aumento do efeito estufa e a perspectiva da diminuição das reservas mundiais de petróleo e gás natural também têm resultado no aumento dessa busca por novas formas de abastecimento energético. Neste contexto, os biocombustíveis, com destaque para o etanol, têm se destacado como fonte de energia alternativa. Percebe-se um aumento crescente na sua utilização em vários países, visando reduzir o efeito estufa e reduzir a dependência de hidrocarbonetos fósseis. Dessa forma, o presente trabalho foi realizado com o principal objetivo de analisar as relações entre os preços do etanol e do petróleo no mercado brasileiro, buscando informações referentes à intensidade de transmissão de preços e às relações existentes entre estes mercados, por meio de análises econométricas. Verificou-se, por meio das análises, que os preços de etanol são influenciados pelo preço do petróleo da semana anterior à observada, o que comprova a influência das oscilações do preço do petróleo mundial sobre os preços do etanol no mercado brasileiro. Também se evidenciou que a introdução dos veículos flex fuel no Brasil interferiu no aumento de produção de álcool.

Oil has long been the main source of global energy; however, due to the high volatility of fossil fuel prices and political instability that permeate the regions that hold most of the world reserves, the demand for other energy sources has become increasingly prominent. Moreover, the increasing effect of greenhouse and the prospect of falling world oil reserves and natural gas also have resulted in an increase of the search for new forms of energy supply. In this context, biofuels, with emphasis on ethanol, have been highlighted as a source of alternative energy. An increase in its use in several countries to reduce the greenhouse effect and dependence on fossil oil is observed. Thus, this work had as main objective to analyze the relationship between the prices of oil and ethanol in Brazil, seeking information related to the intensity of price transmission and the relationship between these markets, through econometrics analysis. It was verified through the analysis that the price of ethanol is influenced by the price of oil of the previous week, which shows the influence of oil prices fluctuations on world prices of ethanol in the Brazilian market. It was also verified that the introduction of flex fuel vehicles in Brazil has contributed to the increase of production of alcohol.

Os veículos flex são equipados com um motor de combustão interna do ciclo Otto e têm como característica a capacidade de funcionar com mais de um tipo de combustível, misturados no mesmo tanque e queimados na câmara de combustão simultaneamente. Este tipo de motorização é uma tendência mundial devido à escassez do petróleo, a comercialização de vários tipos de combustíveis, aos avanços tecnológicos dos sistemas de gerenciamento eletrônico de combustível e às restrições as emissões de gases poluentes na atmosfera. No Brasil, os veículos flex são uma realidade, com destaque para os veículos alimentados com 20 a 25% do álcool anidro misturado com gasolina e os que utilizam gás natural ou o combustível líquido original (gasolina ou etanol hidratado). O FIAT SIENA TETRAFUEL, objeto da presente investigação, é equipado com uma única central eletrônica capaz de gerenciar os combustíveis líquidos ou gasoso. A pesquisa em tela teve como propósito a análise comparativa de desempenho (potência e consumo) de um veículo tetracombustível simulando ciclos de condução urbano e de estrada em um dinamômetro de chassi, operando com os combustíveis: gasolina comum (tipo C), gasolina aditivada (tipo C), gasolina Podium (Premium), etanol (AEHC) ou gás natural (GNV). Foi necessário desenvolver bancada de testes e procedimentos de ensaios, como também conhecer o funcionamento do gerenciamento eletrônico do veículo em questão. Os ensaios foram realizados no Laboratório do Centro de Tecnologias do Gás e Energias Renováveis de acordo com a norma ABNT NBR 7024 - Veículos rodoviários leves Medição do consumo de combustível. Os resultados dos ensaios de consumo específico com as gasolinas comum, aditivada e Podium resultaram em valores próximos, tanto no ciclo de condução urbano como também no ciclo de condução de estrada

Flex-fuel vehicles are equipped with Otto Cycle internal combustion engines and have the capability of functioning with more than one type of fuel, mixed at the same tank and burned in the combustion chamber simultaneously. This sort of motorization is a world pattern due to the scarcity of petroleum, the trade of several types of fuels, technology advances and the restriction imposed to gas emissions to the atmosphere. In Brazil, the Flexfuel vehicles are a reality, specially the ones using fuel with 20 to 25% anhydrous alcohol mixed with gasoline and those that use natural gas or original liquid fuel (gasoline or hydrated ethanol). The Brazilian model Fiat Siena, the object of this present scientific investigation, is equipped with a unique electronic central capable of managing the liquid or gaseous fuels. The purpose of this research was to perform a comparative analysis in terms of performance (in terms of both potency and consumption) of a tetra-fuel vehicle - using a chassis dynamometer, operating with different fuels: common gasoline, premium gasoline, Podium gasoline, ethanol or natural gas. The approach of âBusiness Platformâ, attempts to demonstrate that nowadays, industries can establish innovations together, by means of formal exchange of competencies between âa leader firm and its complementorsâ. So, strategical gains for several organizations of a sector are obtained, through a competitive and differentiated product. In this way, the general objective of the research consisted in elaborating a model of âFlex-fuel platform in Brazilâ, based on exchange of competencies among involved organizations (suppliers of Flex Fuel technology and automakers). The methodology of the research was qualitative and exploratory with techniques of grounded theory and thematic content analyses of five deep interviews made with suppliers of Flex Fuel technology and automakers. The Flex Fuel technology, on intervieweeâs perception was considered a factor of expansion of present and future innovations for the Brazilian auto industry. This work came to a mixed grid of analysis, with categories from interviewâs route and three more open categories related to âBusiness Platformâ theory. The Flex Fuel technology as âBusiness Platformâ presented the following results: There were changes on flex-fuel engine architecture related to its components. Technology architecture can be considered integral and stable, but small changes were made from the previous engine, that interfered on carâs performance and on its demand. The Flex Fuel technology rose from a strong exchange of competencies among âmodulesâ (suppliers of Flex Fuel technology and automakers). The interviewees also stated the existence of co-design on Flex Fuelâs development and application. The power of automakers is relevant on architecture of âFlex-Fuel platformâ because of its leadership position in the automotive chain. This fact allowed automakers to standardize of components provided by systemists (first tier suppliers) and subsystemists (second tier suppliers). At the end, a model of âFlex-fuel platformââ and a conceptual grid of interrelationship were elaborated. The conclusion was that the âFlex-fuel platformââ is driven by automakers that hold the engine architecture as a central element. High value innovation as Flex Fuel technology, demands partnership and standardization of âcomplementorsâ (suppliers of technology and small firms). The evidence was that âFlex-fuel platformââ has the engine as driving element of: creating innovations, competition and adaptation of âcomplementorsâ, indicating the existence of âFlex-fuel platformââ.

Piston rings are metal parts which, when installed on the pistons in the cylinders of the engine, become circular with variable pressure and self-expansive, providing a movable seal between the combustion chamber and the crankcase. These components are subjected to intense functional demand, being asked to submit a low wear rate and maintain their structural and functional integrity under high temperatures and pressures. Due to these requirements, the technique is known of providing up-to-face contact with coatings or surface treatments to improve wear. Currently the majority of applications in the compression rings are martensitic stainless steels. These rings have their tribological properties improved by gas nitriding treatment which gives the steel surface intermediate properties between metallic and ceramic materials with high resistance to adhesive wear, as well as to wear by abrasion. This technology has been applied since the 90s with great success and high market penetration. With demand growing for reducing emissions was introduced in the market the Otto cycle engines with bifuel, better known as Flex engines. The principle of operation of these engines is the use of gasoline and ethanol at any mixing. The compression ratio of the piston is optimized for gasoline and not optimized for ethanol, since the latter does not have limitations to the phenomenon of detonation and this fact makes it occurs more Ethanol injection into the combustion chamber providing an improper fuel does not wash burnt in the cylinder wall. The result was the creation of a different tribological system in the area of operation of the rings where the nitrided layer began to suffer a detachment. This study aimed to find a solution for this detachment, where the nitride layer was changed. The modification consisted in decreasing the precipitation of carbides in the grain boundaries through migration carbon more to the core of the ring making it more robust to cracks and less susceptible to hydrogen embrittlement. Was created two nitriding stages, one richer in nitrogen which provides the wear resistance required for applying and the second stage causes the carbon to become more concentrated in the core hindering the generation of cracks and, consequently, the detachment. There was a decrease in the hardness of the nitrided layer without deteriorating the wear resistance, creating a unique solution and extending the life of this technology.

▼ Onderwerp In deze studie is innovatief onderzoek gedaan naar het belang van Treatment Fidelity (TF) van ouderbegeleiders bij de interventie OUDERS van Tegendraadse Jeugd (OvTJ) bij de Jeugdreclassering. Methoden De opvoedingsondersteuning OvTJ is door de Jeugdreclassering aangeboden aan 217 ouders door 25 ouderbegeleiders in 15 variërende duo’s. Op basis van een (geoptimaliseerd) model van Treatment Fidelity zijn logboeken opgesteld voor en interviews gehouden met 8 ouderbegeleiders die nooit samen een duo vormden. De (flexibele) kenmerken van Treatment Fidelity zijn beoordeeld met het instrument TF-Flex en gerelateerd aan de verandering in opvoedgedrag van de ouders. Resultaten Ouders gaan gemiddeld vooruit in constructief opvoedgedrag. Van de variantie van de vooruitgang in constructief opvoedgedrag kan 7,5% verklaard worden uit de samenstelling van het ouderbegeleidersduo op basis van geslacht en 4,3% uit de expliciete aandacht voor ouders met een allochtone achtergrond. Conclusie Het geoptimaliseerde TF-model is bruikbaar bij het ontwikkelen en evalueren van jeugdinterventies. Object In this study, innovating research was conducted on the importance of Treatment Fidelity (TF) of parent counsellors in the parenting support program OUDERS van Tegendraadse Jeugd (OvTJ) at the institute for youth rehabilitation. Methods The parenting support program OvTJ has been offered to 217 parents by 25 parent counsellors, whom carried out the intervention in 15 pairs. On the basis of an (optimized) Treatment Fidelity-model, journals were developed and elaborate interviews with some of the parent counsellors (n=8), whom had never been in a pair together, have been conducted. The (flexible) characteristics of Treatment Fidelity were assessed with the newly developed instrument TF-Flex and were related to the difference parents experienced in constructive parenting behaviour. Results Parents do progress on average in constructive parenting. Considering the variance of progression on constructive parenting, 7.5% can be accounted for by the constitution of the pair of counsellors regarding sex. Another 4.3% can be accounted for by the explicit attention parenting counsellors pay to diversity in cultural background of the participants. Conclusion The optimized model of Treatment Fidelity could be suitable for both professionals, program developers and subsidy granters. Advisors/Committee Members: Londen-Barentsen, W.M. van.

▼ Várias propriedades são consideradas para a produção de combustíveis. Um das propriedades fisicas mais importantes da gasolina é a pressão de vapor, que juntamente com a destilação, define a volatilidade da gasolina que é um fator importante para o bom desempenho do motor. Compostos oxigenados são acrescentados à gasolina para aumentar sua octanagem e promover a redução da emissão de gases poluentes. Esses aditivos também afetam outras propriedades do combustível e o efeito é diferenciado dependendo da quantidade de oxigenado adicionado. Estes efeitos são de es?veciaul importância para o desempenho de uma nova tendência de motores desenvolvidos para operar com um combustível de qualquer proporção de gasolina e etanol, conhecido como flex fuel.Este trabalho de dissertação tem como objetivo estudar o efeito do etanol nas propriedades mais importantes para o desempenho da gasolina como combustível automotivo, tais como: curvas de destilação, octanagem, densidade e pressão de vapor, por apresentarem?se altamente suscetíveis à presença de um composto polar como o etanol, e também realizar a predição da pressão de vapor destas misturas. Inicialmente, foi determinado o mínimo de dados de caracterização da gasolina tipo A, incluindo análises do tipo PIANO (teor de parafinas, iso?parafinas, aromáticos, naftênicos e olefinas). Foram realizadas as seguintes análises: pressão de vapor com base no método ASTM D 6378 em várias temperaturas (20 a 80'C), destilação, octanagem e densidade das misturas de gasolina e etanol em toda faixa de concentração. Com base na termodinâmica aplicada, foi proposta uma metodologia para predição de pressão de vapor das misturas de gasolina e etanol. Nesta etapa foram empregados os dados de caracterização da gasolina e os dados experimentais medidos para fins de predição da pressão de vapor por meio do modelo de coeficientes de atividade NRTL. Os dados de pressão de vapor, destilação, octanagern e densidade das misturas de gasolina e etanol medidos neste trabalho mostram que a adição de etanol na gasolina afeta significativamente todas essas propriedades.Nos cálculos da pressão de vapor foi utilizado o método y?0 para a formulação do equilíbrio líquido?vapor. A mistura foi considerada binária e a flise vapor foi considerada ideal. Para o cálculo da pressão de saturação usou?se a correlação DIPPR. Para o cálculo dos coeficientes de atividade da fase líquida utilizou?se o modelo NRTL, onde foram estimados os parâmetros de interação intermolecular e os parâmetros de não?aleatoriedade. Com o modelo NRTL foi possível representar a pressão de vapor das misturas de gasolina e etanol estudadas dentro do desvio experimental esperado, em toda faixa de concentração e na maioria das temperaturas analisadas Advisors/Committee Members: Stragevitch, Luiz (advisor).
