▼ This thesis examines the development of negation in historical West Flemish and Hollandic, focussing on resilient preverbal markers within a socio-historical framework. In doing so, my study provides a more detailed discussion of the resilient preverbal marker ne/en than previous accounts have done, as well as an explanation of why certain negative markers developed the way they did in the history of West Flemish and Hollandic. The analysis is based on an extensive, purpose-built corpus that comprises data from six centuries - from the thirteenth until the eighteenth - and two dialect regions. The dataset, which is examined using a fine-grained, century-by-century approach, thus provides diachronic breadth as well as a contrastive view of dialectal variation. In the literature, six contexts have been identified in which preverbal ne/en remains resilient: exceptives, expletives, with certain verbs, with certain adjectives or adverbs, fragment answers, and rhetorical questions. The results will be analysed on the level of morphosyntax as well as on a sociohistorical level. Firstly, my study will offer an in-depth diachronic overview of the grammaticalisation of exceptives, will analyse expletive preverbal markers as NPIs that undergo analogical change, and discuss the fossilisation of fragment answers. Secondly, I argue that urbanisation in the thirteenth to fifteenth, and the seventeenth centuries, may explain the West Flemish development of ne/en in the context of adverbs and adjectives, as well as the shift from bipartite to single niet and the loss of expletive markers in the Hollandic data. In addition, I will show that standardisation and prescriptivism can account for the attestation patterns in fifteenth-century Hollandic and eighteenth-century West Flemish. Overall, my research argues against 'one size fits all' explanations for the development of negation, and instead emphasises the need for a multi-faceted approach, proposing individual analyses tailored to each type of negative marker in the data.

▼ Focused on the interwoven histories – political, economic, social, and artistic – of Flanders and the Spanish empire to which it belonged, this dissertation investigates how Flemish painters and paintings entered Spain and the role of these Flemish transplants in the development of Spanish tastes, collecting, and art production. Analyzing Spanish and Flemish visual, bibliographic, and archival material, this dissertation confronts questions of style, mobility, quality, and artistic exchange via concrete historical examples. The Introduction traces these regions’ centuries-long relationship, setting the stage for the transformations that would occur in seventeenth-century Madrid. Part I examines Flemish immigrant painters and their strategic use of organizations and relationships to establish their careers. Pursuing vertical mobility up the court hierarchy, many sought to join the Spanish king’s Burgundian guard. Flemish immigrant painters also collaborated within familial networks and cultivated international connections. Despite some successes, many experienced professional difficulties, their careers representative of countless peripatetic artists of the period. Addressing how Flemish painting genres entered the Madrid art market, Part II investigates the visual qualities most often associated with these genres. A critical element of Flemish paintings for seventeenth-century Spaniards was a distinctive balance between figures and “surroundings.” Spanish texts register awareness of this balance, and Spanish painters appropriated and adapted it, competing with immigrants’ paintings and the plethora of imported Flemish paintings. Part III interweaves artistic biography, new kinds of subject matter, and Spanish public reception to consider how the Antwerp-born painter Juan de la Corte’s career can serve as a barometer for Spanish taste in Flemish painting: early triumphs encouraged him to cling to a “Flemish” style, even as it came under attack. Finally, in assessing Peter Paul Rubens’ paintings in Spanish inventories and art treatises and their echoes in Spanish painters’ responses to them, Part IV argues that Rubens’ paintings offered a dramatically new model of Flemish art in Spain, rooted in the human figure. Whereas Spanish conceptions of Flemish painting had long centered on the depiction of “surroundings,” in Rubens’ paintings, Spanish audiences saw a style of art unmoored from a geographical foundation, with the power to be integrated into “Spanish” art. ▼ The Antwerp artist Jan van Kessel the Elder (1626-1679) was esteemed throughout Europe for producing finely-wrought, miniature paintings on copper that depict a broad range of flora and fauna, exotic places, and objects of natural and human artistry. Rather than a transparent window onto the natural world, Van Kessel’s pictures avowedly play and toy with nature, bending it in a variety of ways that bring into focus its artifice and hidden aspects. His compositions contributed to the fashioning of his professional identity and created a visual discourse about early modern strategies and techniques for investigating and representing nature. The ‘natural’ world presented in Van Kessel’s art was ambitiously crafted from the art history of sixteenth- and seventeenth-century Antwerp and informed by the local cross-fertilization of media, materials, and artisanal knowledge. Through a combination of wit, technical virtuosity, self-referentiality, and allusions to art-historical lineage, Van Kessel’s paintings encourage viewers to simultaneously think about art, in terms of collecting, connoisseurship, citation, and media, and think anew about nature. This study uses Van Kessel’s art as a distinctive lens through which to examine the relationship between craft, curiosity, and the pursuit of natural knowledge in the early modern period. Each chapter situates Van Kessel within a particular context where art and natural history intersected in late seventeenth-century Antwerp. Taken together, these investigations reveal how his production responded to a unique convergence of circumstances in that city which included the growth of a popular, commercial strand of natural history, a thriving culture of art collecting and connoisseurship focused on local artists, and a burgeoning luxury industry. The dissertation argues that Van Kessel’s material and conceptual interventions into the representation of nature, such as his innovative, painted “cabinets without drawers” and witty signatures formed from insects and snakes, enabled him to redefine the scope of natural historical illustration and negotiate the value and status of the small-format cabinet picture. ▼ The role of the official film production policy in stimulating a Flemish identity forms the central research question of this dissertation. The research project examines the period that starts in 1964, when a selective and culturally inspired support mechanism for feature films was introduced in Flanders, and runs until 2002, when the support system was structurally renewed. Within the field of nationalism studies, this dissertation contributes to a better understanding of recent cultural nationalism in Flanders. Moreover, by focusing on the under-studied aspect of film policy, this dissertation contributes to the existing research on the relationship between film and national identity, Belgian film historiography and the burgeoning international field of film policy studies. This dissertation regards Flemish identity as a national identity in the context in which national identities are conceptualized as contingent, dynamic and discursive constructions. As disseminators of representations, films provide some of the building blocks that individuals and groups can use to construct a national identity. While most studies focus on the textual representations, it is equally important to study the production context and the struggles for meaning behind the representations. Within a Flemish context, the government’s film policy plays an important role in that process. To study the Flemish film policy process, this dissertation makes use of original archival research, policy documents analysis, expert interviews and textual film analysis. The research conducted for this present study shows that Flemish film policy had a big impact on film production in Flanders. Between 1964 and 2002, more than three-quarters of all Flemish feature films received a government subsidy. On average, this support counted for more than half of (the Flemish share in) the total finance plan of the supported films. The introduction of the support mechanism in 1964 was the result of the Flemish striving for cultural autonomy in the Belgian political context. In line with this, the concrete aim of the film policy practice was to culturally uplift the Flemish audience. Even though the Flemish film policy was marked by ambiguity, we can say that elements of quality and components of the Flemish character held a central place in the policy process, which aimed to construct a recognizable Flemish cinema. Nevertheless, the policy process was often ambiguous because of its dependence on sectorial circumstances and because the film policy itself was also often quite inconsistent on ensuring the Flemish character of the films. From the 1980s on, commercial and economic motives grew more important in Flemish film policy. This evolution ran parallel with the growing internationalization of film productions. The new economic perspective was reflected in the policy intentions, discourses and goals, which lessened the importance of these cultural and Flemish national inspired motivations. Esta raÃa Ã de dupla aptidÃo e que, devido Ã perfeita adaptaÃÃo Ãs condiÃÃes edafoclimÃticas regionais, acabou compondo inÃmeros rebanhos na regiÃo Sul do Brasil. PorÃm, a introduÃÃo de raÃas especializadas no decorrer das Ãltimas dÃcadas ocasionou desinteresse pela raÃa Flamenga, resultando na reduÃÃo drÃstica do rebanho, com cerca de cinqÃenta animais ainda remanescentes e lotados na EPAGRI de Lages. O risco de extinÃÃo imposto a este rebanho e sua importÃncia para a biodiversidade justificam a necessidade de sua preservaÃÃo. Dentre as biotÃcnicas reprodutivas que podem ser utilizadas para a expansÃo desta raÃa destacam-se a Ovum Pick Up (OPU)/produÃÃo in vitro de embriÃes (PIV) e a produÃÃo in vivo de embriÃes pela mÃltipla ovulaÃÃo, inseminaÃÃo artificial (IA) e transferÃncia de embriÃes (TE). InformaÃÃes sobre a eficiÃncia de recuperaÃÃo de oÃcitos obtidos por OPU para a PIV ou mesmo de embriÃes produzidos por TE na raÃa Flamenga sÃo praticamente inexistentes. O objetivo deste estudo foi comparar as eficiÃncias de produÃÃo in vitro vs. in vivo de embriÃes da raÃa Flamenga, utilizando-se a raÃa Holandesa como controle. Oito fÃmeas da raÃa Flamenga e oito da raÃa Holandesa foram subdivididas em dois subgrupos de quatro animais/raÃa. Cada subgrupo foi submetido a um bloco de 10 seÃÃes de OPU/PIV com intervalo semanal ou a duas seÃÃes de TE, em um intervalo de 63 dias. Passado este primeiro perÃodo de 63 dias, ambos os procedimentos (OPU/PIV e TE) foram repetidos em um segundo perÃodo de 63 dias, invertendo-se os subgrupos de animais para cada procedimento. A OPU foi realizada por ultrassonografia transvaginal para a aspiraÃÃo de folÃculos com diÃmetro acima de 3 mm. Todos os CCOs foram avaliados morfologicamente e submetidos Ã PIV, a qual incluiu as etapas de maturaÃÃo, fecundaÃÃo e cultivo in vitro atÃ o Dia 7 de desenvolvimento. Para a TE, realizou-se protocolo padrÃo com doses decrescentes de FSH, seguida de IA, com recuperaÃÃo de embriÃes realizados por procedimento nÃo-cirÃrgico no dia 7 apÃs a inseminaÃÃo. SÃmen congelado do mesmo touro da raÃa Flamenga foi utilizado em todo o experimento. Os dados quantitativos foram analisados pelo PROC MIXED ou pelo teste de Friedman (SAS). Os dados qualitativos foram analisados pelo teste do χ2, e analisou-se os dados de morfologia embrionÃria e cinÃtica de desenvolvimento pelo teste de Kruskal-Wallis (Minitab), para P<0,05. ApÃs 20 seÃÃes de OPU/raÃa, o nÃmero total de oÃcitos viÃveis e a mÃdia de oÃcitos/animal/seÃÃo na raÃa Flamenga (n=635 e 8,0 Â 0,7) foram superiores Ã raÃa Holandesa (n=543 e 7,3 Â 0,7), respectivamente. O nÃmero mÃdio de blastocistos obtidos por rotina de PIV (3,9 Â 1,5 vs. 2,1 Â 1,2) e a taxa de blastocistos pela PIV (11,8% vs. 7,2%) foram maiores para fÃmeas da raÃa Flamenga se comparadas a fÃmeas da raÃa Holandesa, respectivamente. La théâtralité de la mort chez les deux artistes flamands Michel de Ghelderode et Jan Fabre est basée sur un corpus de textes. Découpée en trois domaines constitutifs du théâtre - littérature, dramaturgie, esthétique - l'objectif de ma recherche est centré sur un dialogue entre un art dramatique et un art postdramatique, de façon à confronter ou confondre certains éléments des deux champs théâtraux à travers la théâtralité de la mort. Le domaine littéraire explore le discours des deux auteurs, depuis le titre de leurs oeuvres jusqu'à leurs genres, en passant par les micro et les macrostructures du texte, montrant que la littérature de la mort se reconnaît aussi bien à la forme qu'aux motifs de l'écriture. Les renversements carnavalesques propres aux pièces des écrivains en dépit de leurs différences fondamentales se retrouvent dans le domaine dramaturgique. Il se concentre sur des personnages, des espaces et des temps de la mort en faisant ressortir ce qui relève du jeu dramatique et du jeu performatif. La notion du double, dans le champ de l'esthétique, est étudiée à partir du corps et à partir du processus créatif des deux poètes; le miroir du tableau sur le théâtre est une constante de ce travail. Enfin, la notion duale est opposée à l'universel que représente la figure christique, porteuse du grotesque par la résurrection. Malgré les coupures entre les diverses formes d'expressions artistiques, pour Jan Fabre il a continuité entre un langage visuel et un langage textuel, telle une continuité entre vie et mort.

The theatricality of death at both Flemish artists Michel de Ghelderode and Jan Fabre is based on acorpus of texts. Divided into three constituent fields of theater - literature, dramaturgy, aesthetic -the objective of my research is focused on a dialogue between a dramatic and a post-dramatic art, inorder to confront or confuse some theatrical elements of both fields through theatricality death. Theliterary part explores the linguistics of the authors texts, from the title of their works to their genres,including the micro and macrostructures, showing that the literature of death is as well in the shapeas in the motives of the writing. The carnavalesc reversals particular to the writers' plays in spite oftheir fundamental differences is found in the dramaturgy field. It focuses on characters, spaces andtimes of death by highlighting what is dramatic play and performative play. The concept of doublein the aesthetics part, is observed through the body and the creative process of the poets; the mirorof the painting on theater is a constant in these works. Finally the double is opposed to the universalthat the christik figure represents, carrier the grotesc by the resurrection. If there are gaps betweenthe various forms of artistic expressions, for Jan Fabre there is continuance between a visuallanguage and a textual language, such continuity between life and death.

▼ AFRIKAANS: Die navorsingsdoel van hierdie studie is om insig te verkry in die rol van handboeke in die instandhouding en legitimering van etniese magsverhoudinge, in die besonder deur middel van die bevestiging van kulturele stereotipes onderliggend aan die nie-geformuleerde, maar effektiewe verspreiding van norme, waardes en houdings. Gegrond op die aanname dat handboeke sosiale en politieke werklikhede weerspieël, ondersoek hierdie kwalitatiewe studie die voorstellingspraktyke in Nederlandse, Vlaamse en Afrikaanse taalhandboeke. 'n Kritiese diskoersanaliseontwerp, ondersteun deur 'n tematiese analise en fokusgroepbesprekings, word aangewend om die visuele materiaal in een handboekreeks van elk van die drie gemeenskappe te ondersoek. Ter aanvang word die drie Dietse tale se moontlike invloed op mekaar, ook ten opsigte van diversiteit, bespreek. Die teoretiese begronding is geanker in die veld van houding-, kultuur- en visuele studies. Die kennisbasis aangaande handboekvoorstellings in die onderskeie gemeenskappe word ontgin. Die bevindinge word as indikators van die fokusgroepbesprekings in die drie tersaaklike gemeenskappe, sowel as 'n tematiese analise van die visuele voorstellings in die handboeke aangebied. Daar is in die Nederlandse en Vlaamse data stereotipering gevind. Die bevindinge toon dat die visuele materiaal in die Nederlandse data as ideologiese retoriek van die dominante wit groep dien, wat die 'ander' as problematies, arm en 'anders' voorstel. Die Vlaamse reeks toon enkele voorbeelde van kulturele uitsluiting, maar gebruik ook teensimbole om self-refleksiwiteit onder leerders aan te moedig – wat outomatiese stereotipering teenwerk. As gevolg van Afrikaans se politiese verlede oorbeklemtoon die Afrikaanse handboeke 'n utopiese ‘nuwe Suid-Afrika’ waar ras en verskil non-issues is. Geen tekens van apartheidmeestersimbole kon in die Afrikaanse handboeke gevind word nie en Afrikaans as witmanstaal is in 'n groot mate gedemitologiseer. As gevolg van die sterk hekwagtersrol wat handboekbelanghebbendes soos die onderwysdepartement en uitgewers in Suid-Afrika speel, kan die Afrikaanse handboekdata slegs in 'n geringe mate met die Nederlandse en Vlaamse data vergelyk word. Anders as wat aanvanklik vermoed is, toon hierdie studie dat taal die belangrikste, indien nie die enigste, gemene deler tussen die drie gemeenskappe is. ENGLISH: The research goal of this study was to provide insight into the role of textbooks in the maintenance and legitimization of ethnic power relations, specifically the reproduction of cultural stereotypes informing the unstated, but effective distribution of norms, values and attitudes. Based on the assumption that textbooks serve as a mirror of the social and political order, the purpose of this qualitative study is to determine the extent to which Dutch, Flemish and Afrikaans language textbook series foster cultural stereotyping of the 'other’. L'afflux d'une population nationale francophone, venue de la capitale belge, provoque un sentiment de minorisation au sein de la population néerlandophone habitant cette périphérie. Depuis le début des années 1990, les autorités municipales et régionales mettent en place des politiques linguistiques censées préserver la culture flamande des dix-neuf communes limitrophes de Bruxelles-Capitale. Un véritable dispositif territorial, officiellement baptisé le « Vlaamse Rand » (littéralement la « périphérie flamande »), analysé dans cette thèse, vise à « discipliner » les usages linguistiques des allophones au sein des espaces publics.Comment les francophones de la périphérie bruxelloise investissent-ils leur territoire de résidence, linguistiquement et politiquement ordonnancé par les autorités flamandes ?Cette thèse se concentre sur une étude psychosociologique de l'espace, en combinant les approches de la sociolinguistique et de la psychologie culturelle avec celles de la géographie humaine. Elle examine l'impact des stratégies linguistiques émanant de pouvoirs, officiels et officieux, sur les mobilités et les territorialités des francophones résidant en périphérie de Bruxelles-Capitale. Les résultats issus de questionnaires en ligne, d'observations participantes et surtout d'entretiens qualitatifs concourent à l’élaboration d’un cadre analytique permettant de déterminer, à différentes échelles spatiales, l'influence de l'usage des langues sur les comportements territoriaux tout autant que sur les perceptions du territoire de résidence.

The establishment of linguistic borders in Belgium has in no way limited the internationalization and francization of the Flemish Brussels-Capital’s periphery. An influx of a national French-speaking population, coming from the Belgian capital, causes a feeling of minorization among the Dutch-speaking population living in this periphery. Since the early 1990s, municipal and regional authorities have been implementing language policies, which are supposed to preserve the Flemish culture of the nineteen neighbouring municipalities of Brussels-Capital. A tese que agora se apresenta pretende mostrar a importância dos Livros de Horas na sociedade portuguesa tardo-medieval e nas relações que a envolveram com as principais cortes europeias. Este estudo permitiu reconstituir o percurso de alguns códices, avaliar o prestígio que então granjeávamos junto das principais casas, a grande receptividade que a arte flamenga encontrou junto da nobreza portuguesa e o impacto que teve na produção nacional. A ausência de estudos, para a grande maioria dos códices, levou-nos à elaboração do levantamento exaustivo dos Livros de Horas manuscritos e fólios soltos que actualmente se conservam em Portugal, organizado por instituições, acrescido de dezasseis outros códices vinculados à corte portuguesa, pertencentes a entidades estrangeiras, e aos quais dedicamos, também, um brevíssimo estudo. Os setenta e oito exemplares que assinalámos em Portugal foram alvo de um estudo analítico que incluiu a identificação da origem e dos programas iconográficos (com indicação da secção em que estão inseridos) e a bibliografia específica para cada manuscrito. Os Livros de Horas de origem flamenga, maioritariamente provenientes da colecção real portuguesa, foram objecto de um estudo codicológico mais aprofundado que incluiu, para além dos aspectos atrás mencionados, a elaboração de fichas científicas desenvolvidas, a transcrição integral do texto e o seu confronto com a pintura e iluminura coevas, com o património de épocas precedentes e com a produção das gerações subsequentes, onde procurámos avaliar o seu impacto. Desse estudo advieram também novidades significativas relativas aos códices em análise, destacando-se a reconstituição do que consideramos ser o projecto inicial das ditas Horas ditas de D. Fernando ou D. Catarina, pretendendo-se agora que a sua visibilidade os posicione no centro da discussão nacional e internacional. Ao organizá-los por cronologias e ateliês pretendemos mostrar a evolução da linguagem pictórica que marcou a iluminura flamenga dos séculos XV e XVI, tendo a sua contextualização na produção coeva servido para melhor compreender as dinâmicas da produção do livro, da circulação de modelos, as escolhas da elites portuguesas e a grandeza dos códices que possuímos. A reconstituição do seu percurso institucional e as parcerias desenvolvidas com algumas instituições detentoras dos códices permitiram-nos avaliar e compreender danos infligidos em épocas mais recentes e reconstituir parte da história do livro.

The central thesis of this work is to show the importance of the Book of Hours, in the context of the late medieval Portuguese society and the relations that involved it with the main European courts. ▼ AFRIKAANS: Die navorsingsdoel van hierdie studie is om insig te verkry in die rol van handboeke in die instandhouding en legitimering van etniese magsverhoudinge, in die besonder deur middel van die bevestiging van kulturele stereotipes onderliggend aan die nie-geformuleerde, maar effektiewe verspreiding van norme, waardes en houdings. Gegrond op die aanname dat handboeke sosiale en politieke werklikhede weerspieël, ondersoek hierdie kwalitatiewe studie die voorstellingspraktyke in Nederlandse, Vlaamse en Afrikaanse taalhandboeke. 'n Kritiese diskoersanaliseontwerp, ondersteun deur 'n tematiese analise en fokusgroepbesprekings, word aangewend om die visuele materiaal in een handboekreeks van elk van die drie gemeenskappe te ondersoek. Ter aanvang word die drie Dietse tale se moontlike invloed op mekaar, ook ten opsigte van diversiteit, bespreek. Die teoretiese begronding is geanker in die veld van houding-, kultuur- en visuele studies. Die kennisbasis aangaande handboekvoorstellings in die onderskeie gemeenskappe word ontgin. Die bevindinge word as indikators van die fokusgroepbesprekings in die drie tersaaklike gemeenskappe, sowel as 'n tematiese analise van die visuele voorstellings in die handboeke aangebied. Daar is in die Nederlandse en Vlaamse data stereotipering gevind. Die bevindinge toon dat die visuele materiaal in die Nederlandse data as ideologiese retoriek van die dominante wit groep dien, wat die 'ander' as problematies, arm en 'anders' voorstel. Die Vlaamse reeks toon enkele voorbeelde van kulturele uitsluiting, maar gebruik ook teensimbole om self-refleksiwiteit onder leerders aan te moedig – wat outomatiese stereotipering teenwerk. As gevolg van Afrikaans se politiese verlede oorbeklemtoon die Afrikaanse handboeke 'n utopiese ‘nuwe Suid-Afrika’ waar ras en verskil non-issues is. Geen tekens van apartheidmeestersimbole kon in die Afrikaanse handboeke gevind word nie en Afrikaans as witmanstaal is in 'n groot mate gedemitologiseer. As gevolg van die sterk hekwagtersrol wat handboekbelanghebbendes soos die onderwysdepartement en uitgewers in Suid-Afrika speel, kan die Afrikaanse handboekdata slegs in 'n geringe mate met die Nederlandse en Vlaamse data vergelyk word. Anders as wat aanvanklik vermoed is, toon hierdie studie dat taal die belangrikste, indien nie die enigste, gemene deler tussen die drie gemeenskappe is. ENGLISH: The research goal of this study was to provide insight into the role of textbooks in the maintenance and legitimization of ethnic power relations, specifically the reproduction of cultural stereotypes informing the unstated, but effective distribution of norms, values and attitudes. Based on the assumption that textbooks serve as a mirror of the social and political order, the purpose of this qualitative study is to determine the extent to which Dutch, Flemish and Afrikaans language textbook series foster cultural stereotyping of the 'other’. Le dialogue du corps et de la mort chez jan Fabre est fondé sur un corpus de textes théâtraux. En ce qui concerne la démarche de mon travail, elle était principalement axée sur trois volets principaux d’abord les héritages et les inspirations artistiques et culturelles ensuite le rituel et le sacrifice dans sa dimension historique philosophique et artistique et enfin la fabrication du spectacle : de la genèse à la représentation scénique. L’objectif de ma thèse est de démontrer la volonté de l’artiste d’affranchir les limites, de violer les codes de la société et de créer un langage artistique authentique inspiré de toute matière possible pour toucher à la vulnérabilité de l’homme contemporain. Pour ce faire Jan Fabre a élaboré une méthode de travail qui fait redécouvrir un corps brut et instinctif, un corps générant une énergie vitale résultant ainsi à des sensations fortes. Dans ce processus de travail j’ai remarqué que pour Fabre la notion de recherche a une place primordiale en se basant sur une évolution conceptuelle, philosophique et historique. Jan Fabre construit ses spectacles de sorte que tous les composants de la représentation s’entremêlent. Une écriture textuelle et visuelle singulière construit une sorte d’état post-mortem dans le sens où la logique est cédée à l’intuition, une écriture qui offre un univers scénique riche d’images et d’allégories. Une composition scénique où l’espace, le temps et le rythme se basent surtout sur la tension et l’élaboration d’une atmosphère rituelle. Finalement le corps et la mort dans son univers font unité et il manifeste un travail récurant entre l’apparition et la disparation.

Jan Fabre's dialogue of body and death is based on a body of theatrical texts. Regarding to the approach of my work, it was mainly focused on three main aspects, first the inheritances and the artistic and cultural inspirations, then the ritual and the sacrifice in its historical philosophical and artistic dimension, and finally the production of the performance: from genesis to scenic representation. The goal of my thesis is to demonstrate the artist's desire to overcome the limits, to violate the codes of society and to create an authentic artistic language inspired by all possible materials to touch the vulnerability of contemporary man. To do this Jan Fabre has developed a method of work that rediscover a body raw and instinctive, a body generating a vital energy and resulting in strong sensations. In this work process I noticed that for Fabre the notion of research has a primordial place based on a conceptual, philosophical and historical evolution. Jan Fabre builds his performances so that all the components of the performance interweave. A singular textual and visual writing constructs a sort of post-mortem state in the sense that logic is ceded to intuition, a writing that offers a scenic universe rich in images and allegories. ▼ With respect to the Quaternary deposits, the Belgian Continental Shelf (BCS) was one of the last unmapped and unknown areas of Belgium. Because of the absence of a distinct shelf break and the virtually complete lack of subsidence, the BCS has very little accumulation space to accommodate and preserve Quaternary sediments. The Quaternary on the BCS is very patchy and discontinuous, and has a maximum thickness of only 45 m. From this fragmented record it was very difficult to produce a coherent reconstruction of the Quaternary evolution, in times when only analogue data were available. At present, > 5000 km of analogue high-resolution seismic profiles have been scanned, converted into digital ‘segy’ format, and integrated with almost 500 core descriptions, enabling us to develop a genetic model for the Quaternary evolution of the BCS. The seismic data show seven seismic-stratigraphic units, in agreement with previous studies on one of the sandbanks of the BCS. Three basal units (U1, U2, U3) infill a large valley, incised during the Saalian ice-age in the Top-Paleogene (former Top-Tertiary) surface, i.e. the Ostend Valley. The three units, separated by tidal ravinement surfaces, represent successive phases of a transgressive estuarine infilling during the Eemian sea-level rise. After the final phase, shoreface erosion was that severe, that seismic unit U3 was completely levelled with the Top-Paleogene surface, and Eemian remnants are only found in depressions. During the subsequent Weichselian lowstand, a minor sinuous river incised in the Eemian transgressive surface, where previously the Ostend Valley was present. Directly on top of this surface no Weichselian cover sands have been encountered, but early Holocene tidal flat deposits, i.e. seismic unit U4. The tidal flat environment developed behind a coastal barrier which migrated landward with the Holocene rising sea-level. In the sand layer left by the barrier migrating over former tidal flat deposits, coastal storm-dominated banks formed (U5). These coastal banks were partly eroded when the barrier stabilised and started prograding seaward again, in reaction to the slowing down in the Holocene relative sea-level rise. The tidal flat area behind the barrier, silted up and an extensive surface peat developed. With a new tidal pulse, the barrier migrated landward again, but stabilised before it reached the present-day coastline. Until in the 15th century, storm surges induced the drowning of the island Wulpen, which caused irreversible hydrographical changes in the mouth of the Western Scheldt. Due to these changes and the consequently stronger tidal currents, the original natural and storm-induced shoreface ravinement surface was deepened. This did not happen though until the middle of the 16th century. After that, the eroded, high-organic muddy sediments (of former back-barrier deposits) could settle, alternated with sandy storm layers. This represents seismic unit U6.
