▼ During 1830s Russian and Persian armies threatened an advance towards the north-western frontier of the British-Indian Empire. The British responded in April 1839 by invading Afghanistan with the ‘Army of the Indus’. Despite initial successes, a growing
Afghan insurgency resulted in the devastating destruction of the Kabul Garrison in January 1842. For most commentators this cataclysmic event marked the end of an ill-conceived, poorly executed and inept British intervention into Afghanistan. The
First Anglo-
Afghan War has been persistently characterised as both a political and military failure ever since. This thesis provides a reassessment of the
First Anglo-
Afghan War and concludes that it was not the strategic disaster as popularly perceived. Through a close examination of the regional geo-strategic circumstances, Britain’s strategic rationale for the invasion is analysed. It is argued that despite the tactical calamity in Kabul the British were able to salvage their strategic objectives. The thesis argues for a more balanced account of the
war, contending that the popular fixation on the destruction in Kabul has marginalised the critical significance of both the undefeated campaign of the Kandahar Garrison and the decisive re-intervention into Afghanistan by the ‘Army of Retribution’. The actions of the battlefield commanders, Major-Generals Pollock and Nott, are examined through the close reading of historical manuscripts. The thesis argues for their critical role in successfully advocating for re-intervention with the Governor-General, Lord Ellenborough, and thus maintaining Britain’s strategic goals. While Britain did not withdraw from Afghanistan as victors, the successful actions of the ‘Army of Retribution’ reasserted Britain’s martial superiority over the Afghans, restored Britain’s frontier security and averted a strategic defeat for British-India.

▼ The
First Anglo-
Afghan War of 1839-1842 was one of the most disastrous conflicts in the history of the British Empire. It caused the death of thousands and the annihilation of the Army of the Indus. Yet this defeat came after a successful invasion. In analyzing the actions of officials and officers of the British imperial state and the East India Company leading up to and during the invasion, I will argue that these actions served to securitize British India. Securitization is a process by which an actor takes a series of steps to persuade an audience that a specific referent object faces a critical and existential threat. I contend in this thesis that the need for security was used to justify, in the eyes of both British and Indian audiences, the continued territorial expansion and military dominance of the British in India and its borderlands.

Diğer yandan Rusya, Afganistan’dan Hindistan’a ulaşabilmek için Afganistan’ın içişlerinde rol almaya çalışmıştı.
Birinci bölümde Muhammedzayi Hanedanlığının, Emir Dost Muhammed Han ile ortaya çıkışını ve Dost Muhammed’in İngiltere ile münasebetlerini soğuk tutmasından dolayı Rusya kışkırtmalarına açık hale gelmesine ve 1838 yılında I. Afgan-İngiliz savaşının çıkmasına sebep olduğundan bahsedilmiştir. İkinci bölümde Türk-Afgan ilişkileri, II. Abdülhamid’in, Panislamizm politikası gereği Afganistan’a gönderdiği heyet ve Rusya karşı, Afganistan’ı İngiltere’ye yakınlaştırma isteği ele alınmıştır.

▼ Children are rarely asked about their experiences in
the aftermath of war. Each child if given an opportunity has a
unique and precious story to share. It is most likely that embedded
within their experiential stories are essences of resilience. The
purpose of this study was (1) to understand the phenomenon of
resilience in an exploratory way with regard to how Afghan refugee
children adapt despite facing adversities in the aftermath of war,
and (2) to contribute to the knowledge of nursing science and
practice for healthy childhood development. The core research
question was: What are the experiences of Afghan refugee children
currently living in Canada in the aftermath of war? The sub
question was: How do Afghan refugee children describe their
experiences of day-to- day life? Gadamer’s (1960/1989) hermeneutic
philosophy was used to understand the experiences of Afghan
children in the aftermath of war. In addition, hermeneutic
photography, which is based on the methodology of hermeneutic
(interpretive) inquiry, was used as the methodological approach as
well as method. Data were collected with the aid of photographs of
the children’s own choice. Two to three photo conversations were
done with seven children residing in Edmonton, Alberta. The
participants ranged between the ages of 13 to 17; five were females
and two were males. They were all born in Afghanistan and had two
parent families and belonged to the Shia sect of Islam
specifically, the Shia Imami Ismaili Muslims. Gadamer’s approach to
data analysis was adopted throughout the study. Four themes emerged
that described the day-to-day life experiences of the Afghan
refugee children: (a) cherishing the family; (b) treasuring the
Afghan culture; (c) creating opportune spaces to dwell; and (d)
building and sustaining resilience. Recommendations were drawn as a
useful guide from the findings of this study for education,
practice, policy development, and future research to benefit Afghan
refugee children and their families to dwell in a new
country.

▼ When the
First World
War began in August 1914, President Woodrow Wilson declared that he wanted the United States to remain neutral. By avoiding the conflict in Europe he hoped to demonstrate that his country held itself to a higher standard and that he was an honest broker who could mediate an end to the
war. Additionally, Wilson hoped that the United States could profit from selling goods to the belligerents. He was not, however, well-versed in diplomacy, nor was he a non-partisan observer. This disposition, along with his desire for American prosperity, regularly influenced his policies and, in turn, aided the Allies. Yet, regardless of his restricted and often parochial approach to international affairs, Wilson did not intentionally violate American neutrality in the early months of the
war. His position changed as the conflict progressed because Britain and the United States gradually increased their economic and political ties to the point that U.S. and U.K. interests became
Anglo-American interests. This dissertation examines how the intertwining of U.S. and British political and economic interests during the
first eighteen months of the
First World
War induced Wilson to intentionally deviate from neutrality and provide calculated support for the Allies. (Published By University of Alabama Libraries)

Commando: A Boer journal of the Boer
Suid-Afrika terug, kwalifiseer as ‘n prokureur en open ‘n
leër in Brittanje.
First Royal Scots Fusiliers.
Krugerwildtuin.
Naturellesake (1939) en as adjunkpremier in Smuts se Oorlogskabinet
Johannesburg werk.
Anglo Boereoorlog, gepubliseer as Commando in 1929.

Commando: A Boer journal of the Boer
Suid-Afrika terug, kwalifiseer as ‘n prokureur en open ‘n
leër in Brittanje.
First Royal Scots Fusiliers.
Krugerwildtuin.
Naturellesake (1939) en as adjunkpremier in Smuts se Oorlogskabinet
Johannesburg werk.
Anglo Boereoorlog, gepubliseer as Commando in 1929.
Anglo-Boereoorlog. Die res van sy lewe,
vanaf 1902 tot 1940, het hy in die boeke Trekking on en No outspan

▼ Spouses of combat veterans with posttraumatic stress disorder have elevated psychological distress, some of which has been explained by increased caregiver burden. However, there is very little knowledge regarding intraindividual characteristics of these spouses that may be related to their burden. The current study examined caregiver burden in a sample of 102 spouses of reserve component troops deployed during Operation Enduring Freedom/Operation Iraqi Freedom. Despite similar patterns of associations with spousal traits, factor analyses revealed that items related to burden and distress each loaded onto distinct factors, suggesting that they measure unique experiences. Burden did, however, fully mediate the relation between service members' distress and spouses' distress. Levels of burden were directly related to spouses' neuroticism and emotionfocused coping, and marginally related to lower levels of self-efficacy and perceived support from partners, although none of these factors were significant in a regression of burden that included service members' distress. Finally, problem-focused coping moderated the relation between service members' distress and spouses' burden, with the association weakening as spouses endorsed higher amounts of these coping processes. These results suggest that spouses' burden is primarily related to the degree of distress in service members, but the promotion of adaptive coping styles in spouses may help mitigate this link.

▼ The thesis examines the position of nurses during
the Second
Anglo-Boer
War (1899 – 1902) and considers how their
work helped to raise the profile of nursing. The experience of the
war demonstrated the superiority of the work undertaken by trained
nurses as compared with that of ‘amateurs’. At the commencement of
war a small cohort of army nurses worked alongside large numbers of
trained male orderlies, however these numbers proved insufficient
during the period of the
war and additional, entirely untrained
orderlies (often convalescent soldiers) were relied upon to deliver
nursing care. Against a backdrop of long term antipathy toward
nurses at the seat of
war, the work of both army and civilian
nurses in military hospitals suggested that the clinical
proficiency of trained nurses had a significant impact on military
effectiveness. The thesis will develop arguments based on the
personal testimonies of nurses who served during the
Anglo-Boer
War, relating to clinical nursing and nurses perceptions of
professionalism during the period. Personal testimony will be used
primarily to examine the working lives and experiences of serving
nurses, as many historians simply state that the excellent work of
the nurses forced changes, yet make no allusion to what this
specifically entailed. Faced with the exigencies of
war, including
limited medical supplies and military bureaucracy (termed by nurses
and doctors alike as ‘red tape’) that hindered nurses’ abilities to
provide high levels of care, nurses demonstrated their developing
clinical confidence. Despite accusations that nurses were
‘frivolling’ in South Africa, raising concerns over the control and
organisation of nurses in future military campaigns, the social
exploits of nurses on active service was not entirely detrimental
to contemporary views of their professional status. Nurses were
able to demonstrate their abilities to survive the hardships of
war, including nursing close to the ‘front lines’ of
war and the
arduous conditions inherent in living under canvas on the South
African veldt. Not only were nurses proving their abilities to
endure hardship normally associated with masculine work, but they
were also establishing their clinical capabilities. This was
especially so during the serious typhoid epidemics when nurses were
able to draw upon their expert knowledge to provide careful nursing
care based on extensive experience. Nurses, who had undergone
recognised training in Britain, demonstrated their professional
competence and proved that nursing was a learned skill, not merely
an innate womanly trait. The
war also represented an opportunity to
evidence their fitness for citizenship by using their skilled
training for the benefit of the Empire. The subsequent reform of
the Army Nursing Service, resulting in the establishment of the
Queen Alexandra’s Imperial Military Nursing Service in 1902,
suggests permanent recognition of the essential role of nurses in
times of both
war and peace.

▼ Characterized by General Secretary Mikhail Gorbachev as a “bleeding wound,” the Soviet-
Afghan War left a broad imprint on the domestic front during the Soviet Union’s transition from stagnation to dissolution. From the onset of
war on 25 December 1979 to the 40th Army’s withdrawal on 15 February 1989, most Soviet officials spoke only of a Limited Contingent of Soviet Troops in Afghanistan that served its “international duty.” As a result, private narratives and popular myths about those at
war – known as the afgantsy – circulated for years before the Politburo chose to assemble heroic icons from the fallen. By focusing on the afgantsy, this dissertation offers a case study in the mobilization of civil protest, popular interpretation of military conflict in times of
war, and its translation into postwar culture.
The Soviet-
Afghan war filtered through a range of domestic avenues, from emerging grassroots organizations, to conferences aimed at reinforcing the state narrative, to popular cinema. When in the years of glasnost public debate on the
war was authorized, the only uniform perception of the afgantsy that emerged was that they were wrongfully deployed by the Politburo. After the Soviet Union dissolved on 26 December 1991 this verdict became redundant for many, and the historicization of the Soviet-
Afghan War became a challenge for 15 independent countries.
This study explores the myriad ways in which the
Afghan war made an imprint on everyday life in the Soviet Union through the incorporation of a broad range of sources. These include but are not limited to recently declassified archival materials, oral history interviews, memoirs, films, and a vast range of publications that have been made accessible in the online world. More than 20 interviews were conducted, the majority of which were with afgantsy, but included soldiers’ mothers, widows, and veterans of other armed conflicts. Archival research took place at a variety of locales, among them the State Archive of the Russian Federation and the International Archive of Memorial in Moscow; the Central State Archive of Political Documentation of the Kyrgyz Republic in Bishkek; and the State Archive of the Security Service of Ukraine in Kiev.

▼ Background: The United States Department of Veterans Affairs - War Related Injury and Illness Study Center (WRIISC] located in East Orange, New Jersey collects data on both self-reported and expert identified exposure and medical concerns of US veterans who served in Afghanistan and Iraq. This study will compare the frequencies of self-reported and WRIISC identified concerns. Materials and Methods: A total of 894 veterans completed a self-reported intake questionnaire developed by the WRIISC from June 2004 to January 2012. These questionnaires as well as formal medical evaluations were used by WRIISC medical personnel to assess medical and psychological function in US veterans who served in Afghanistan and Iraq. Data from the questionnaires and medical forms were abstracted into a database developed by the WRIISC. Expected Results: Patterns of exposure and medical concerns were analyzed using a percent agreement and sensitivity/specificity approach. It is expected that veteran exposure and medical concerns endorsed on the WRIISC intake questionnaire would differ from the physical assessment of exposure and medical concerns identified during the WRIISC clinical evaluation. Limitations: Recall bias of veterans while reporting exposure and medical concerns may be an issue. Information on both exposures and health were "yes"/’'no'' or "present" / "absent”, thus limiting quantitative interpretations. Conclusions: There were unique exposure and medical concerns reported by US veterans who served in Afghanistan and Iraq. Overall, the largest number of exposure concerns that were identified by the WRIISC were Burning Trash (N=431, 54.1%), Sandstorms (N=365,45.8%), and Petrochemicals (N=196, 24.6%). The largest number of medical concerns that were identified by the WRIISC were Musculoskeletal (N= 556, 6.6%), Neurological (N= 281, 22.6%) and Gastrointestinal (N=276, 33.0%).

▼ This thesis explores the nature, longevity and intensity of Anglophobia in Dutch public debate, between 1756 and 1784. Although the Fourth
Anglo-Dutch
War triggered the Patriot Era, this
subject has not seen any study. At most, Anglophobia has been represented as marginal to the domestic critique on the Stadholder William V and the oligarchic regents, a consequence of the focus in the historiography on domestic political developments, most notably, the republican Patriot ideology. This thesis aims to show that Anglophobia was a dominant undercurrent in the Dutch Republic, also within that republican Patriotic discourse that has up till now been considered Francophobic.
Anglophobia was contingent on contextual events as well as deeper laying developments. The Seven Year
War brought about a conflict between Britain and the Dutch Republic over maritime treaties after the Dutch decided to stay neutral. The declining Dutch economy made trade with Britain’s enemies during
war a very profitable prospect. Therefore, Britain captured Dutch ships. The resulting conflict was sharpened by the dynastic links of the House of Orange with Britain. This context is crucial to understand the outrage against Britain in this period.
During the Seven Year
War, Anglophobic imagery was used in debates surrounding piracy, neutrality and dynasty. National particularistic stereotyping was used to depict the English negatively, further shaped by a historical consciousness of the seventeenth century, when the roles were reversed and the Dutch Republic was deemed more powerful. Sources point to Britain as playing a part in both the deeper lying sense of cultural insecurity in Dutch society, and the ‘moral corruption’ narrative that was a product of it.
But during the 1770s, influenced in part by the American Revolutionary
War, Anglophobia was used to reflect positively upon the situation, identity and history of the Dutch. Indeed, the same problems occurred with English privateers like in the Seven Year
War. But the Anglophobia around this time received more intellectual argumentation. Britain was increasingly depicted as ‘despotic’, antithetical to republican ‘freedom-loving’ values. This narrative was strengthened by international Anglophobia, and more specifically, by English patriots themselves. However, Dutch writers misunderstood the signs of British power as they predicted its imminent downfall. Even when
war broke out that optimism lingered. The cumulative Anglophobic frustration exploded in a feast of songs, poems and celebrations. Ultimately, when the humiliation of the
war was irrefutable, Anglophobic turned against domestic ‘traitors’.

ABSTRACT
In an Age that Information is just a click away andaccessible in real time trough the internet, from and to anywhere in the World, the WikiLeaks site with one of its latest and more debatted global disclosures has came trough with relatively recent classified information concerning the War in Afghanistan. That disclosure is now known as the Afghan War Logs, and represents the largest information leakage ever in the Military History until then. This case proposes to expose to the entire World what is considered by WikiLeaks to be the
indisputable truth and so aiming the change in the public and enlarged perception of how modern conflicts are directed, through the public’sfree critical scrutiny.
Accesible to all, will it have produced an impact, will it have left marks that’ll last due to the public changes of perception about the case?
In this dissertation an exploratory study is presented that indicates that this case has aroused little interest in national public, therefore not exerting any influence on their understanding of and interest about the conflict in Afghanistan.
A correlation between the public’s unawareness withthe little space dedicated to this topic by the written press is also established, reinforcing the significance of conventional media in association with this type of disclosure in order to increase its impact.

▼ The purpose of this thesis is to examine the
performances of gender that permeated the justifications for
Operation Enduring Freedom (OEF) in Afghanistan, focusing on the
representational practices that dominated the Bush administration’s
narratives of rescue and circumscribed our understanding of the
actors involved. In particular, I will argue that the image of
Afghan women as the helpless victim of Taliban oppression not only
allowed the United States and its coalition allies to cast
themselves as heroic masculine warriors but also helped to
reinforce the idea that
Afghan women were little more than mere
symbols of helplessness, placing them in a position of absolute
inferiority and dependency. Crucially, I will claim that this image
of
Afghan women as the passive prisoners of the Taliban was
contingent upon the suppression of a series of alternative
perspectives that could not be accommodated within the parameters
established by the prevailing frames of
war. On the one hand, I
argue that the dominant representations of
Afghan women tended to
show them in decidedly monolithic and one-dimensional terms, with
the Bush administration and its coalition allies defining them
almost entirely by the suffering they experienced. Absent from
these accounts, however, was any mention of women’s resistance to
Taliban rule or their criticisms of the military intervention. On
the other hand, I will show how the international community relied
upon a particular historical narrative that allowed them to present
Afghanistan as a barbaric aberration in the modern world whilst
allowing them to dismiss the period of Taliban rule as a terrifying
oddity in the country’s history, destroying many of the freedoms
that were said to exist under previous regimes. As well as ignoring
the myriad of interactions between Afghanistan and the outside
world and the complex social, economic and political forces that
helped to precipitate the rise of the Taliban, I will argue that
this historical narrative reinforced the idea that the lives of
Afghan women were in a state of suspense during this period, their
very existence as human beings held in abeyance until coalition
troops could intervene to redeem them. What distinguishes my
argument from the work of other feminists is my attention to the
way in which these representational practices are contingent upon
an uneasy process of repetition and reiteration, leaving them
vulnerable to the possibility for subversion and resignification.
Drawing on Judith Butler’s work on performativity, normative
violence and the politics of intelligibility along with Gayatri C.
Spivak’s work on the subaltern
subject, I show how the activities
of organisations such as the Revolutionary Association of the Women
of Afghanistan (RAWA) and the voices of individuals such as Malalai
Joya help to expose the limits of the dominant norms of
intelligibility, opening up the possibility for a less violent and
less exclusionary re-imagining.

▼ Challenging Fates is a novel set at the time of the
First World
War which proposes an alternative history of the period. It approaches this in two ways. The chronology begins with the actual events of the outbreak of World
War I, but proceeds to construct an alternative meta-narrative, seeking to create a seamless division between reality and fiction. This becomes the background against which the lives of members of four families from England, France, Germany and Russia are played out. Thus a series of micro-narratives is created, which help to explore some of the political, cultural and social aspects of early twentieth century Europe, while also carrying the reader into the lives, circumstances and decisions of the characters.
The reader is introduced to a Quaker mill owning family from Huddersfield, in the north of England. Their eldest son, Stephen is an army officer, who becomes involved in politics and government as an aide to the Russian politician, Alexander Kerensky, who himself, must make his own decisions between family and politics. In Germany we meet Karl von Allenstein from a traditional Junker family, who has fallen in love with a French girl during his tour of duty in occupied France. As he tries to reintegrate into German society he becomes aware of the growing and insidious power of an extreme right wing group and must decide what action to take. A young patriotic Jew, called Philippe, is the chief protagonist in the French part of the narrative. He becomes entangled in an anti-Semitic plot to rescue and revitalise France along Fascist lines. As the plot comes to its climax, Stephen, Karl and Philippe play their parts within the one narrative, while Russia struggles to find its way between constitutional liberalism and socialist revolution. The book ends with an invitation into a new, but uncertain chapter in history.

▼ The First World War left few untouched on Canada’s Native reserves: many councils donated money to war funds, thousands of men enlisted and their families sought support from the Military and war-specific charities, and most became involved in the debate over whether Native men could be conscripted and the implications that decision could have for broader Native-government relations. Much of the extant literature on Native participation in the war has paired enthusiastic Native engagement with the Canadian government’s shabby treatment. However, in many different ways and with many different goals, Native peoples achieved significant success in determining the parameters of their participation in the war. Yet, the resolution of these debates between Native peoples and the Canadian government, specifically the Department of Indian Affairs, inadvertently (from the Native perspective) cemented the Indian Act’s key role in Native peoples’ lives, displacing other foundational agreements and traditional organizational principles of reserve life. Native peoples’ varied participation in the First World War paradoxically saw Natives temporarily take control of their relationship with the Canadian government, but in the end brought them more completely under the authority of the Department of Indian Affairs.

▼ This dissertation relates to the dismissal of Admiral Jellicoe,
First Sea Lord from November 1916 to December 1917, by Sir Eric Geddes,
First Lord of the Admiralty, at the behest of the Prime Minister, David Lloyd George. The dismissal was peremptory and effected without rational explanation, despite Jellicoe having largely fulfilled his primary mission of combating the German U-boat threat to British merchant shipping. The outcome of the
war may well have been affected if the level of shipping losses sustained through U-boat attack in April 1917 had continued unabated.
The central argument of the dissertation is that the dismissal was unjustified. As an adjunct, it argues that the received view of certain historians that Jellicoe was not successful as
First Sea Lord is unwarranted and originates from severe post
war critism of Jellicoe by those with a vested interest in justifying the dismissal, notably Lloyd George.
Supporting these arguments, the following assertions are made. Firstly, given the legacy Jellicoe inherited when joining the Admiralty, through the strategies adopted, organisational changes made and initiatives undertaken in anti-submarine weapons development, the progress made in countering the U-boat threat was notable. Secondly, the universal criticism directed at the Admiralty over the perceived delay in introducing a general convoy system for merchant shipping is not sustainable having regard to primary source documentation. Thirdly, incidents that occurred during the latter part of 1917, and suggested as being factors which contributed to the dismissal, can be discounted. Fourthly, Lloyd George conspired to involve General Haig, Commander of the British Forces France, and the press baron, Lord Northcliffe, in his efforts to mitigate any potential controversy that might result from Jellicoe’s removal from office. Finally, the arguments made by a number of commentators that the Admiralty performed better under Jellicoe’s successor, Admiral Wemyss, is misconceived.

▼ Drawing upon the primary accounts of three Great
War nurses – Mildred Salt, Louisa Higginson and Daphne Rowena Commons – who all served in the Mediterranean and Middle East, this thesis explores the theme of identity – gender identity, colonial identity and ‘tourist identity’. I argue that the nurses’ writing challenges the popular perception of nursing as a traumatic loss of innocence, which has been largely drawn from published works of volunteer nurses rather than professionals. The three nurses in this thesis spent very little time, if any, documenting what they witnessed in the wards. Their entries dispute the romantic notions presented in popular literature or propaganda posters used throughout the empire, which presented the nurses as young, innocent and beautiful and standing at the bedside of a wounded soldier.
The
first chapter examines the nurses’ identity as tourists. Overseas travel was a new experience for these nurses, and their experiences of the ‘Home’ culture of London and the exoticism of Egypt feature frequently in their diary entries and letters. Their responses were diverse, but common themes emerge. Many of the tensions the nurses experienced stemmed from their unusual position in the empire as women voters with a pioneering heritage. The second chapter will examine the two perceptions of ‘colonial’ – the positive and negative perception. The former was used by the British as a means of putting New Zealand nurses in their place. The latter formed when the nurses were treating New Zealand patients in hospital, acting as a physical and mental connection to home. The third chapter asks how the greater autonomy women possessed, due to their colonial lifestyle, influenced the nurses’ campaign for their right to serve overseas. The fourth, and final, chapter will explore how the nurses negotiated the traditional notions of womanhood whilst in the masculine environment of
war. Not only did they face opposition from some military officials who believed
war was no place for women, they observed and critiqued the behaviour of other women.
Through exploring the diaries and letters of three New Zealand nurses, this thesis provides a more complex view of the experiences of almost 600 New Zealand professional nurses who were stationed overseas during the
war.

▼ Ernst Lissauer’s “Haßgesang gegen England” is an Anglophobic German poem, written in the early weeks of the
First World
War. This thesis examines the poem’s reception in the German and English-speaking worlds, the imitations it inspired, the opposition it provoked, and the enduring discourse it instigated. The study begins by outlining Lissauer’s biography, and places his “Haßgesang” within the context of contemporary German poetry of hate. It discusses the changing reception of the poem in the German-speaking world over time, and the many and varied German works it inspired. The “Haßgesang” is shown to have captured the Zeitgeist of Germany at the beginning of the
First World
War, but to have been later rejected by the German public and renounced by its author, while the
war still raged. The poem also established a discourse on hatred and hatefulness as motivating factors in
war, sparking debate on both sides. In the English-speaking world, the “Haßgesang” was viewed by some as a useful insight into the national psyche of the Germans, while for others it merely confirmed existing stereotypes of Germans as a hateful people. As an example of propaganda in reverse the poem can hardly be bettered, inspiring parodies, cartoons, soldiers’ slang and music hall numbers, almost all engineered to subvert the poem’s hateful message. The New Zealand reception provides a useful case study of the reception of the poem in the English-speaking world, linking reportage of overseas responses with new, locally produced ones. New Zealand emerges as a geographically distant but remarkably well-informed corner of the British Empire. Regardless of the poem’s literary quality, its role as a vehicle for propaganda, satire and irony singles it out as a powerful document of its time: one which cut across all strata of society from the ruling elite to the men in the trenches, and which became an easily recognised symbol around the globe.

▼ S.J.P. Kruger, four times president of the
Zuid-Afrikaansche Republiek (ZAR), played a central role in the
Afrikaners' struggle for independence both in the 19th and 20th
centuries. His significance as a leader also becomes apparent when
considering the plethora of literature written on him both during
his lifetime and after. Not only is his own life story intertwined
with the history and development of the ZAR and rise of
Afrikanerdom, but as a leading figure he was also
subject to much
criticism. This was particularly evident in the years leading up to
and during the South African
War (1899-1902) when the ZAR forces
clashed with Britain. Against this dualistic background a
stereotypical and binary portrayal of Kruger emerged. Some of these
have been perpetuated into the literature of the 21st century.
However, despite the array of works published on Kruger, it remains
remarkable why his involvement in the South African
War has not
received extensive scrutiny, principally his "behind-the-scenes"
contribution. It is to this prominent event in the life of Kruger
that this study turns with particular reference to the year 1900
which has been identified as a so-called "crisis period". Using the
War telegrams dispatched by Kruger during the said period, this
study endeavours to not only investigate Kruger's
War-time
contribution and motives, but also to reassess his character in the
context hereof. Although much of the evidence suggests that the
Kruger persona is somewhat entrenched, the
War telegrams however
point to additional representations of Kruger and call thus for
further reappraisal.

▼ This paper explores the economic developments in colonial Virginia between 1622 and 1646 and argues that various economic developments within colonial Virginia pushed the colony toward greater integration with the larger Atlantic economy and that these developments altered the nature of trade between the English colonists and the Powhatan in such a way that formal separation per the 1646 treaty was an attractive option to both parties. During this time frame, which encompassed both the Second and Third
Anglo-Powhatan Wars, economic interactions between the English colonists and the Powhatan chiefdom became less frequent and focused largely on small-scale exchange of high-value goods. The treaty ending the Third
Anglo-Powhatan
War in 1646 formalized the growing divide between the English colony and the Powhatan chiefdom by establishing clear geographic boundaries and restricting trade to two border forts. Although both the Second and Third
Anglo-Powhatan Wars began with a large massacre of English colonists by the Powhatan, followed by violent reprisals from the English, the former dragged on for ten years and ended without serious reorganization of the political situation. The latter conflict was over within two years and resulted in the formal separation of the two societies. It was the economic developments that occurred throughout this period that led to the vastly different outcomes for these two conflicts that began in such similar fashion.

▼ The long history of Anglo-French relations has often been acrimonious. After the German defeat of France in June 1940 the right to represent the French nation was contested by Philippe Pétain’s Vichy government and Charles de Gualle’s London-based Free French resistance movement. This thesis will examine the highly complex relationship between Britain and these two competing sources of Frenchness between 1940 and 1945. It will do so through a series of empire-themed “crisis points,” which contributed to a heightened state of Anglo-French tension affecting all three actors. This study uses rhetoric as a means to link decision makers or statesman to the public sphere. It argues that policy makers, whether in the British War Cabinet, de Gaulle’s headquarters at Carlton Gardens, or Pétain’s ministries at Vichy anticipated how their policies were likely to be received by a group or groups of individuals. These were individuals who contributed towards what decision makers believed to be public opinion. Perceptions of public opinion, in other words, played a vital role in policy creation. In turn, the desire to get one or more sectors of the public “on board” with a particular policy or wartime operation gave rhetoric a place of primary importance. Specifically, we will see how policy makers carefully constructed and revised public statements and speeches. When these external communications and explanations are placed side by side with internal official discussions, it will become evident that rhetoric is itself a vital strategic tool. The grammatical constructions and vocabulary that made up official statements and mass media responses shed light on broader wartime themes including victory and defeat, allies and enemies, power, sovereignty, neutrality and morality. Ultimately, acknowledging that rhetoric is an inherent part of policy making allows us to better understand the links between the governing bodies of a nation and those who have a stake in its policies. At the same time, it allows us to see how less tangible normative factors continue to impact this process.

This thesis is a study of the dynamics of the Anglo-Irish Truce of 11 July 1921 which
brought a formal conclusion to the Irish War of Independence. Although this work
explores the origins, character and significance of the agreement, its primary focus is an
analysis of the effect the announcement the impending armistice had on the use of lethal
violence in the final days and hours of the conflict. It uses empirical data to interrogate
existing hypotheses, and test popular theories surrounding the cessation of the Irish
Republican Army’s military campaign. Furthermore, it examines in detail the hitherto
neglected subject of the reaction and responses of the British forces in Ireland to the
agreement. This study also establishes the role the advent of the Truce played in
fomenting ‘Belfast’s Bloody Sunday’, one of the most intense outbreaks of sectarian
violence in modern Irish history. This thesis addresses key questions which are central to
understanding the Truce and the conflict as a whole. The new research presented in this
study challenges an established historical narrative. The empirical findings make a useful
contribution to the development of a more complex and comprehensive history of the
Irish revolutionary period.
The research contained in this thesis arrives at a number of defining conclusions.
The rank and file of both the IRA and British forces were taken completely unawares by
the advent of the ceasefire and, contrary to previous claims; there was no premeditated or
concerted national campaign by either side in an attempt to inflict as many fatalities on
their enemies as possible immediately before the conflict ended. A handful of provincial
IRA units issued orders to launch fresh military offensives after the announcement of the
Truce but these had a desultory effect. Contrary to previous claims these units
concentrated on regular military operations such as ambushes and barrack attacks rather
than so called ‘soft targets’ such as the execution of civilians and assassinations of
members of the British forces. The vast majority of IRA operations which occurred
nationally in the final days and hours of the conflict were motivated by local factors
rather than national political developments.
Although the IRA continued to use lethal violence right up to the beginning of the
Truce, almost all of these attacks were typical of those which had developed during the
conflict and were not specifically motivated by the announcement. The British forces in
southern Ireland engaged in similar military operations but, like their enemies, there is no
evidence to suggest that these operations were specifically motivated by the impending
ceasefire. Only in Belfast, where there was sustained inter-communal violence in the final
days of the war, can reaction to the Truce be said to have resulted in an upsurge. Even in
that instance, negative loyalist reaction to the ceasefire was just one of a number of
contributory causes, amongst which local factors predominated.…

▼ This thesis examines the work of Wilfred Owen in the context of his lifelong compulsion to present himself as an outsider possessed of elevated knowledge - as one who transcends the expectations of his social background and allies himself with groups who value esoteric knowledge. Though these tendencies have previously been noted by biographers and literary critics, this thesis posits that they are more influential on his poetry than has been previously observed, and explores the different outsider groups with which Owen aligns himself. This thesis also discusses Owen as an influential artistic figure alongside recent historical criticisms of myths about the First World War. As new perspectives on the conflict are explored, Owen's place in collective memory has increasingly been questioned and criticized as limited, and the reasons behind this, as well as the validity of the central place Owen holds in the conception of the 'War Myth' are investigated. These two elements are connected by the central assertion of this thesis, which is that while it can be shown that Owen is disproportionately influential and provides only a limited, personal account of a very complex historical event, when his work and his personal philosophy are taken into account, Owen in fact presents himself as representational only of outsider groups that consider themselves separate and elevated. It therefore becomes apparent from his writing, correspondence and from the proclivities made apparent by the decisions he made in the course of his short life that he should not be considered as an everyman, nor as a spokesperson for all soldiers. This was neither his intention, nor an appropriate didactic use for his writing. Through this interpretation, this thesis asserts that in tandem with expressing caution when confronted with widespread acceptance of the myths of the First World War, the informed observer must also be cautious about accepting the myths about Owen himself.

▼ This thesis carried out between January 2015 and July 2016, describes the process of adaptation of cognitive behaviour therapy (CBT) for common mental disorders (CMDs) and evaluation of its effectiveness through a pilot project in Pashto-speaking Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and FATA area of Pakistan and Afghanistan. This region has faced multiple traumas and difficulties including severe floods, earthquakes, Pak-
Afghan-Russian
war (1979-1989), the burden of
Afghan refugees in Pakistan, civil
war in Afghanistan, as well as terrorist attacks and bombing in the aftermath of 9/11. This brought destruction to the region and the rates of mental health problems, especially CMDs are considered to be fairly high in this region. Adapting a cost-effective intervention such as CBT, which is an effective treatment for the treatment of CMDs, might, therefore, be of enormous help in reducing CMDs in the region. However, CBT would need adapting for its use in non-western cultures.
This thesis is divided into 12 chapters. The
first chapter gives an overview of the problem, i.e. CMDs around the globe. This chapter includes Prevalence, Risk Factors, Presentation and Aetiology of CMDs and moves on to focusing on different treatment options. Chapter 2 describes CBT with the emphasis on its use in CMDs. Since CBT was developed in the west (as
2
highlighted in Chapter 2) and therefore might have been heavily influenced by the underlying cultural values, Chapter 3 discusses the link between culture and CBT. This chapter also encompasses discussion on Sufism (Islamic version of mindfulness). The next two chapters focus on mental health in the region under study in general but CMDs in specific. Chapter 4 describes health system of the region, the state of mental health as well as traditional healing practices in the region, while chapter 5 discusses current status of CMDs in the region.
Chapter 6 is an introduction to the project which discusses the need for the project, methodology used, the reasons for choosing CBT, and a brief description of qualitative methods to be used. Chapter 7 describes the beginning of the qualitative research of the study. It describes exploration of the patients’ views about their illness and its treatment and to see what they think about CBT. A similar approach is used in Chapter 8 to explore the views of the carers about the illness and treatment of their patients. Chapter 9 describes the interviews with the mental health professionals. It also highlights the methods adopted and the results of the qualitative analyses, similar to Chapter 7 and 8. It was also considered necessary to translate the terminologies used in CBT and for this, students were interviewed. This is described in Chapter 10. On the basis of all the qualitative work, we developed a study manual and Chapter 11 describes
3
the pilot project which was conducted to assess the effectiveness of the adapted therapy based on the manual prepared for patients with CMDs, using a Randomized Controlled Trial (RCT) design.
The final chapter (chapter 12), summarizes…
