▼ Manufacturing organizations are facing intense pressure to provide customers with
shorter times between order and delivery and between product conceptualization and
realization, greater product customization, and higher product quality and performance, at
the right price. To meet this challenge, companies in the manufacturing industry are
being forced to implement ERP systems to better their supply chain performance in order
to remain competitive. This study focused on ERP applications and supply chain
performance of large scale manufacturing firms in Nairobi, Kenya. It had three
objectives: to determine the extent of ERP application in the supply chain of large scale
manufacturing firms in Nairobi, to establish the impact of ERP on the supply chain
performance for large scale manufacturing firms in Nairobi, and lastly to determine the
challenges that are faced in integrating ERP applications in the supply chain of large
scale manufacturing firms in Nairobi. This study adopted descriptive survey design where
the target population was the large scale manufacturing firms in Nairobi. Stratified
random sampling technique was used to select the firms. The questionnaire was used as
the research instrument which was self-administered and collected after completion by
the researcher. Collected data was analyzed using SPSS frequencies, percentages, means,
standard deviations and regression analysis. The findings were presented using pie chart,
bar graph, and frequencies tables. Study findings revealed that a majority of the
manufacturing organizations were using ERP applications, and in most organizations
there were common modules that were preferred by the companies. In as much as the
ERP applications are being used, about 70 percent of the capacity of the applications is
utilized. This shows there is still much room for improvement in the way the applications
can be used. The findings of this research indicated that there’s a positive significant
relationship between ERP applications and supply chain performance despite the
challenges that are faced by organizations when it comes to implementation. From the
study, the following recommendations were made: there is need for manufacturing
organizations to apply all the ERP functionalities if they are to improve their supply chain
performance. The study findings imply that the successful implementation and the
effective usage of ERP applications can contribute toward enhancing supply chain
performance in many ways. This study recommends the need for manufacturing
organizations to apply all the ERP modules if they are to improve their supply chain
performance.

▼ The objective of the research was to establish strategy evaluation practices adopted by
insurance firms in Nairobi, Kenya. The population of this study consisted of all the forty
three (43) insurance firms in Nairobi, Kenya which are registered by the Insurance
Regulatory Authority (IRA, 2012).A list of the insurance firms in Nairobi, Kenya was
obtained from the Insurance Regulatory Authority (IRA). Primary data was collected
from these companies by use of a questionnaire.
The study established that 50% of insurance firms in Nairobi, Kenya adopt a formal
approach to strategy evaluation while 20.83% adopting informal strategy evaluation. 50%
of the insurance companies evaluate their strategies formally, 20.83% informally and
29.17% both formally and informally. The insurance companies have adopted both
formative and summative evaluation. Formative evaluations strengthen or improve the
strategy being evaluated. They help form it by examining the delivery of the strategy, the
quality of its implementation, and the assessment of the organizational context,
personnel, procedures, inputs, and so on. Summative evaluations, in contrast, examine the
effects or outcomes of strategy. The companies also evaluate strategy in light of both
financial and operational performance of the organization.
Key limitations included non-response of some respondents and shortage of time. The
study recommends that researchers in strategic management can take the topic of strategy
evaluation further by conducting a case study on one of the insurance companies in
Kenya.

▼ Today‟s dynamic business environment is continuously changing because of
globalization, regulatory changes, increasing intensity of competition, increasingly
demanding customers, new information technology, and mergers and acquisitions. This
has resulted in markets that can be characterized as increasingly turbulent and volatile and
has caused many organizations to seek competitive capabilities that enable them to
exceed customers‟ expectations and enhance market and financial performance. Firms are
increasingly adopting personal selling in order to reduce costs, increase market share and
sales, and build solid customer relations. When competition is keen and the consumers
are faced with brand choice in the market, it becomes imperative for the retailers to
understand the major factors that can attract the attention of buyers to their outlets. These
then form the basis for personal selling in order to increase the sales and ultimately the
performance of the outlet. The objective of the study was to establish the influence of
personal selling strategies and performance of pharmaceutical firms in Nairobi, Kenya.
The study used descriptive cross sectional survey research design. The population of the
study consisted of all the pharmaceutical firms operating within Nairobi. The study used
primary data which was collected using self-administered questionnaires. The data
collected was analyzed using statistical package for social sciences and presented in
tables and charts. The study found out that the pharmaceutical firms were using personal
selling strategy to market their products and it resulted in improved performance in terms
of greater volume of sales, faster movement of drugs, improved profit margin,
pharmaceutical firm education and sponsorship of events and increased financial
performance. Canned strategy of personal selling resulted in sales people providing
stimuli sought by the buyers until decision is arrived, provides the details that meet
customer need spelled out in the script and that it enables salespeople to keep track of
buyers‟ mental state. System personal selling strategy to market their products and this
enabled the firms to sell products as a package rather than selling them separately or
independently, creates a situation for both buyer and seller and customers were
increasingly looking for a systems‟ solution rather than the buying of an individual
product.

▼ This dissertation focuses on the barriers that
authenticity brings to entrepreneurial outcomes such as entry of
new organizations, product diversification, and introduction of new
products in traditional industries. Advancing theory on
organizational authenticity and geographical communities, this
thesis argues that authenticity is not only an asset that
organizations can choose but also a barrier for entrepreneurial
attempts and the renewal of an industry. The main argument is that
when community members seek after authenticity and local
traditions, the establishment of new organizations and the
introduction of new products can threaten the maintenance of
community traditions and regional identity. In addition,
geographical proximity between producers and consumers enables the
development of a tightly knit fabric of relationships between
market actors that are difficult to overcome by entrepreneurs. This
thesis further elaborates on the resources upon which producers can
rely on to overcome these constraints. In particular, family
ownership and product naming strategies prove resourceful when
introducing new products in traditional industries. The Franconian
beer industry (Northern Bavaria, Germany) is the empirical context
where I test these arguments. Being one of the oldest industrial
agglomerations in Europe, the Franconian beer industry stands for a
highly traditional cluster of breweries where producers and
community members have a strong interest in preserving their
authenticity. Founding rates as well as the product portfolio of
more than 300 breweries are observed for the period
1989-2012.

▼ There is a notable absence of empirical studies locally conducted to determine the problems of
internationalization of operations by Kenyan insurance firms. Globally some scholars have
also lamented on the paucity of research progress in general and a lack of theoretical and
empirical rigor of exciting studies in internationalization of services. Internationalization of
small firms especially from a developing country’s perspective has received little attention in
academic enquiry. A review of local literature shows that although there have been several
research studies done on the insurance industry; none touch on the problems of
internationalization. Even more numerous studies have looked at internationalization of
operations in other service industries with a strong emphasis on Kenyan banks. The study
established primarily that lack of knowledge and expertise to assess opportunities in foreign
markets hinders the internalization of the operations of insurance firms. Study findings from
chapter four indicate that 37.8% of the insurance firms have not internationalized their
operations. The majority of those that have internationalized have operations in Tanzania
followed by Uganda which validates the Upsalla model of internationalization on the aspect of
psychic distance. The study also indicated that network of branches, joint ventures and merger
and acquisitions do not form the current operations in the countries Kenyan insurance firms
are operating. However, the study established subsidiaries was the preferred mode of entry for
the majority of the insurance firms in foreign countries. The study findings indicated that
firm’s motives in setting up operations in another country are based on search for new
markets, incentives offered by the regional integration, firm’s strategy and financial and
political risk diversification strategy. Client following, increasing shareholder wealth and
bandwagon effect does not motivate Kenyan insurance firms to venture in other foreign
markets. Host government laws, political instability, gaining client confidence and
competition from local firms were also established to be major problems for the
internalization of the operations in the foreign market for Kenyan insurance firms. In addition
to lack of knowledge and expertise to assess opportunities in foreign markets, lack of capital
to finance expansion, domestic market focus and lack of support from the Kenyan government
impedes the internationalization of insurance firms. In effect the findings herein tended to
support the Upsalla model of internationalization and the upper echelons theory in as far as
respondents confirmed that a lack of knowledge and expertise hindered the
internationalization of firms and further that so many of the firms were focusing on the local
market alone to the exclusion of opportunities in the regional market.
The study recommends that host countries should enact laws that enable a fair competitive
environment for the operations of the foreign insurance firms. Trade…

▼ The traditional procurement system involving the separation of design and construction services
has served the public well over the past century. This separation of design and construction
services can foster adversarial relationships between the agency, designers, and contractors, can
restrict innovation, and result in high cost/time growth and therefore may not necessarily provide
the best value to the Department for all project types. The increasing population has created
tremendous pressure to move critical projects quickly through the planning stage and into design
and construction, without a commensurate increase in available funding. Underlying these
external pressures is the basic requirement to include quality concepts in all phases of the
highway program. Procurement practice entail the exercise of acquiring goods and services for
an organization as per the set policies that govern the choice of suppliers, products and methods
that aim to utilize sound business practices which maximize value of the organization.
Application of procurement practices is the solution to improving the procurement system as
well as the overall performance in a firm or an organization. This study sought to establish the
procurement practices carried out and their effect on performance. It was guided by two
objectives which were to establish the extent of application of procurement practices and the
effect of the procurement practices on performance. The population included 58 oil marketing
companies as listed in appendix III downloaded from www.erc.go.ke, 2013. The study targeted
all the departments. The answering of questionnaires meet a lot of resistance which prompted the
use of information and reports published by Petroleum Insight East Africa quarterly each year.
From the research it was found that all the Independent Petroleum Dealers practiced almost all of
the procurement practices we had researched about. The practices that were used to a large
degree are as follows, Supplier relationship management, E-technology, Green supply chain
management, Ethical procurement, whole factory view point. These practices affected positively
on performance on the levels of ability to meet demand, high quality products, customer
satisfaction and stability of prices. It was found out that all organizations experience the
challenges identified however they differed in terms of degree of experience in each
organization.

▼ Globalization has changed the face of the competitive arena that affected in many industries
progressing from slow moving, stable oligopolies to hypercompetitive environments. Varied
products to changing operational systems are hastily introduced by the many in the insurance
industry trying to outperform the competitors. The objectives of this study were to:
Determine the strategic agility enablers among insurance brokerage firms in Kenya and to
establish the effect of strategic agility enablers on performance of insurance brokerage firms
in Kenya. The study employed a descriptive research design and regression analysis. The
population comprised 193 insurance brokers operating in Kenya .The relevant data which
was required for this research was gathered from primary sources, through the use of a semistructured
questionnaire. The findings were presented using charts and tables. Descriptive
statistics for the quantitative data included frequencies, percentages, mean scores and
standard deviation. Data obtained from the questionnaires were processed through editing and
coding and then entered into a computer for analysis using descriptive statistics with the
assistance of Statistical Package for Social Sciences version 22. The study found that
formalization, skills and attitude, management commitment and support and digitized
processes affect the performance of the insurance brokerage firms to a great extent. The study
found that organisation structure, discontinuous innovation, human capital, management
commitment and support, information technology integration and operational processes
effectiveness affects the performance of insurance brokerage firms in Kenya. The study also
found that discontinuous innovations such as experimentation with new ideas and exploration
of new paradigms affect performance of insurance brokerage firms in Kenya. The study
found that staff skills, attitudes, experience and competence are very significant in the
performance of insurance brokerage firms. However, there is no teamwork among employees
in the insurance brokerage firms. The study concludes that there is more emphasis on the
quality (TQM) and supply chain coordination among the insurance brokerage firms in Kenya
which greatly affect their performance. The study recommends that the management of
insurance brokerage firms should put in place cost-effective measures for timely risk
identification and effective risk mitigation so as to ensure that their financial performance is
not impacted negatively. The study also recommends that insurance brokerage firms need to
develop robust technology-enabled innovation strategies that define how a company sources
and develops technology to help deliver compelling new products, services, customer
experiences and business models while simultaneously creating barriers to entry. The
insurance brokerage firms should adopt the use of IT in their service delivery in order to
improve their efficiencies as the higher the level of usage, the more efficient firms become

▼ The study of BOD characteristics is a subset of the study of corporate governance. Poor corporate governance practices have been blamed for the devaluation of the shareholders’ wealth. They have been blamed for the failure of multinationals. This study investigated the effect of BOD characteristics on the financial performance of the 64 companies that are listed in the Nairobi Securities Exchange. The study would have considered all the companies listed but due to the difficulty in calculating leverage for companies listed in the financial sector, only 42 firms were included in the study. Even though there are many BOD characteristics, only four were considered. These are financial literacy of the BOD members, the size of the board in terms of number of directors, the number of BOD meetings per year and the independence of the board which was assessed by calculating the ratio of independent directors against executive directors. The research design approach used was descriptive research design approach and focused on the firms listed between 2010 and 2014. Firms listed in the financial segment of the NSE were not included in the study due to the difficulty in calculating their leverage ratio. This study used secondary data that was sourced from the firms’ financial statements filed at the NSE and CMA library. The characteristics of the BOD were logged in the model as the independent variables. Financial performance was captured in the model as the dependent variable. Control variables were leverage and firm size. Regression was used to estimate the relationship amongst the variable. This study found that number of board meetings, board size and financial literacy to be statistically significant in determining firm performance while BOD independence was found not to be of statistical significance. This was at 5% level of significance. This study recommends that, further research is carried out in this area of corporate governance. Further research may look at more characteristics of the BOD and may also use other scores to measure the performance of a firm other than ROA.

▼ This study examines the skills competence of workers in the garment firms and skills-based competitiveness of the garment industries of Ghana. A total of 34 garment firms made up of 27 firms registered with the Association of Ghana Industries and seven firms registered with the Ghana Free Zones Board, as well as 205 workers of the garment industries were selected for the study. The Explanatory Sequential Mixed Method Approach was used for the study in which the quantitative process was first used, followed by the quantitative process. Data were gathered using questionnaires and followed by interviews of some selected workers and management of garment firms. The quantitative data was analysed using Pearson Product-Moment Correlation and Simple Linear Regression while the interviews were analysed using Thematic Analysis. The results show that the garment firms in Ghana have high levels of skills gaps and shortages in critical skills areas of garment production, such as in computer-aided design, machine repairs, and quality assurance, among others. As a result of the skills gaps and shortages many of the garment firms are operating at a competitive disadvantage. Therefore, it is recommended that the garment firms should collaborate with academic and training institutions to increase the skills capacity of garment workers. Garment firms should also adopt competitive manufacturing strategies such as the use of technology, low-cost and added-value manufacturing among others to increase competitiveness. Finally, the Department of Labour should conduct periodic labour skills analysis so that up-to-date information about labour competencies, challenges and opportunities are known to academics, policy makers and industrial who depend on such information for human resource planning. The labour analysis can be done through some sort of liaison with COTVET and AGI as partners.

firms. A case study approach based on
grounded theory utilised in-depth interviews to collect data from
five small professional service
firms. The study found that it is
worthwhile to conceive of strategy content and process in relation
to small professional services
firms. An emerging theory is
presented. The research was limited by its small scale and single
method to collecting data. Future research could include a wider
sample and testing of the emerging theory. The emerging theory
provides a valid and reliable measure for improving actions and
decisions of practitioners. The emerging theory is
practitioner-oriented and contributes to an area of research that
is understudied.

▼ The clothing industry in South Africa is historically well established and caters from basic and low cost products to high-fashion tailormade garments. In 1995, the top five retail chains (Edgars, Wooltru, Pepkor, Foschini and OK) accounted for 58 percent of clothing retail sales. Research on quality management has shown that quality management programmes are not effectively utilised within small clothing manufacturing firms in the Western Cape, The result of this - poor goods and services - has been highlighted. This leads to useful insight into critical aspects pertaining to customer satisfaction and quality service delivery. The research problem researched within the ambit of this dissertation reads as follows: “Quality management programmes are not effectively utilised within small clothing manufacturing firms in the Western Cape, resulting in poor goods and services being produced”. The primary research objectives of this study are the following:
To identify key drivers underpinning complaints in small clothing manufacturing firms in the Western Cape, in terms of service delivery.
To identify the benefits of using quality management tools and techniques, used currently by small clothing manufacturing firms.
To determine if small clothing manufacturing firms have a strategic focus on the quality of a product that they produce.
To identify a mechanism that can be deployed to promote the application of a quality management system.
To identify the benefits of implementing quality management systems within a small clothing manufacturing firm.Reciprocally, the research question, which forms the crux of the research, reads as follows: “What mechanisms can be deployed to promote the application of quality management systems in the Western Cape, thus leading to an improvement of goods and services?”The application of quality management tools and techniques, such as statistical quality control and quality function deployment, has been researched in the small clothing manufacturing sector. The research leads to an improvement in the current state pertaining to quality management programmes not being effectively utilised within small clothing manufacturing firms. Mechanisms to be deployed to promote the application of quality management systems will also be identified, possible solutions found to customer complaints and problem areas addressed. In addition, the research leads to improved quality of goods and services being produced resulting in satisfied customers.

▼ The dissertation explores the impact of trade liberalization on heterogeneous
firms in the presence of informality. In the first paper, I investigate the role of the informal sector in the impact of trade liberalization on welfare, employment and wage inequality in a model of trade with heterogeneous
firms. The findings suggest that trade liberalization reduces informal employment unambiguously. Contrary to the extant literature, however, its impact on welfare, total employment and wage inequality is country-specific. The second paper introduces product-level regulation as new driver of informality in a model of heterogeneous multi-product
firms and endogenous product choice, where
firms face regulation at both firm- and product-level and may comply with or evade either. The model suggests that firmlevel regulation causes informality by deterring firm registration. However, product-level regulation has two effects: it directly drives product informality within the formal sector as evasion of product regulation and indirectly deters
firms from registering. When considering product-revenue distribution, formal
firms are less diversified than informal
firms, which implies that the formalization of economies may entail welfare loses due to decreased product diversity. The third paper studies trade liberalization, informality and corruption. Informality is commonly seen as response to regulations and weak institutions. Yet, regulatory changes, such as trade liberalization, and institutions interact, rendering their joint effect on formality ambiguous. I therefore study the impact of trade liberalization on firm formality in a model of heterogeneous
firms and endogenous corruption. The model suggests that a higher entry cost to the formal sector, entailing more corruption, and trade liberalization decrease formality. However, as trade liberalization reduces corruption, the formal sector is less responsive to trade in economies with higher entry cost, hampering the selection effect of trade. An instrumental variable panel data analysis on Vietnamese SME surrounding Vietnam's WTO accession confirms the predictions.

▼ Most international commerce is carried out by multinational
firms, which use their foreign affiliates for the majority of their foreign sales. In Chapter 1, I examine the determinants of multinational
firms' location and production decisions and the welfare implications of multinational production. The few existing quantitative general equilibrium models that incorporate multinational
firms achieve tractability by assuming away export platforms – i.e. they do not allow foreign affiliates of multinationals to export – or by ignoring fixed costs associated with foreign investment. I develop a quantifiable multi-country general equilibrium model, which tractably handles multinational
firms that engage in export platform sales and that face fixed costs of foreign investment. I first estimate the model using German firm-level data to uncover the size and nature of costs of multinational enterprise and show that fixed costs of foreign investment are large. Second, I calibrate the model to data on trade and multinational production for twelve European and North American countries. Counterfactual results reveal that multinationals play an important role in transmitting technological improvements to foreign countries as they can jump the barriers to international trade; I find that a twenty percent increase in the productivity of US
firms leads to welfare gains in foreign countries an order of magnitude larger than in a world in which multinational production is disallowed. I demonstrate the usefulness of the model for current policy analysis by studying the pending Canada-EU trade and investment agreement; I find that a twenty percent drop in the barriers to foreign production between the signatories would divert about seven percent of the production of EU multinationals from the US to Canada.
Chapter 2, which is joint work with Kerem Cosar and Paul Grieco, studies the implications of national borders on economic activity.
Using a micro-level dataset of wind turbine installations in Denmark and Germany, we estimate a structural oligopoly model with cross-border trade and heterogeneous
firms. Our approach separately identifies border-related from distance-related variable costs and bounds the fixed cost of exporting for each firm. Variable border costs are large: equivalent to roughly 400 kilometers (250 miles) in distance costs, which represents 40 to 50 percent of the average exporter's total delivery costs. Fixed costs are also important; removing them would increase German
firms' market share in Denmark by 10 percentage points. Counterfactual analysis indicates that completely eliminating border frictions would increase total welfare in the wind turbine industry by 5 percent in Denmark and 10 percent in Germany. Finally, an experiment using our structural model shows that commonly used price difference regressions produce misleadingly high estimates of the impact of national boundaries.

▼ M.Ing.
This study proposed to evaluate decision methods for R&D projects to assist managers to choose the appropriate type of model for their organization. In order to enhance the understanding of selection of R&D projects, general characteristics of project selection models have been explained with their advantages and disadvantages. For this purpose, model groups, criteria for models and usage of models have been addressed in detail. For better understanding of project selection models, the general characteristics of R&D projects, which are uncertainty, sequentiality and project interactions have been explained. It has been found by literature survey that the most used models are scoring models, economic models and optimization models. Among these models scoring models have more advantages than the others. However, there is not a perfect model for all types of projects and organizations. The criteria for selection of projects and models have been introduced. It has been found that criteria for selection of projects differ according to the type of projects under consideration, to the managers' view of project selection and to the size of the organizations. Research projects are often selected by using scoring models, which allow subjective estimation. On the other hand development or new product projects are selected mostly by using economic models. It has also been found that realism, flexibility, cost, ease of use, and capability were the most accepted criteria for selection of models. In order to make the discussed subjects clearer the project selection practice of Premet R&D has been explained in a step by step fashion. The model used by Premet R&D in the project selection process has also been addressed. Premet R&D's model has been compared with other models and weighted factor scoring model, which is a better version of their model, has been recommended for Premet R&D.

▼ The purpose of the study is to explore the concepts of
strategy content and strategy process as it relates to small
professional services
firms. A case study approach based on
grounded theory utilised in-depth interviews to collect data from
five small professional service
firms. The study found that it is
worthwhile to conceive of strategy content and process in relation
to small professional services
firms. An emerging theory is
presented. The research was limited by its small scale and single
method to collecting data. Future research could include a wider
sample and testing of the emerging theory. The emerging theory
provides a valid and reliable measure for improving actions and
decisions of practitioners. The emerging theory is
practitioner-oriented and contributes to an area of research that
is understudied.

▼ Capital structure decision is one of the core decisions that financial managers should care for. Different
firms will have different choice of funds that are categorized under either debt or equity. But the most important question is what factors to affect their choice of finance and how they affect it. In order to give answer for such question, this study aims to assess the impact of firm specific and macroeconomic factors on capital structure decision in the environment of Ethiopian insurance sector by using seven years data (2007-2013). In order to achieve this aim the researcher regressed profitability, liquidity, business risk, size, growth opportunity, age, GDP growth rate, interest rate, and inflation rate against the dependent variable as measured by total debt ratio. Such regression was made based on random effects model with the help of EVIEWS 6 software. The results of this study suggest that business risk, firm size, age, and inflation rate variables were significant factors affecting leverage of insurance
firms in Ethiopia positively; confirming tradeoff and pecking order theories as prominent theories for the sector. On the other hand, profitability, liquidity, growth opportunity, GDP growth rate, and interest rate variables found as insignificant to affect the dependent variable. Thus, Ethiopian insurance
firms and their managers are advised to have closer attention on business risk, size, age, and inflation rate factors in order to make optimal decision pertaining to capital structure. Besides, they also advised to give attention first for tradeoff then for pecking order theories of capital structure respectively as per their weight of importance.

▼ This study examines the roles and responsibilities of external auditors in fraud detection in Ethiopia including the factors that influence external auditors' responsibility and expert performance in detecting fraud. The study adopts a mixed methods research approach by combining data gathering instruments of research questions, in-depth interviews and document analysis. The questionnaire data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, correlations, and logistic regression analysis and data from interview and document reviews were interpreted qualitatively. The findings of the study show that, auditors are responsible for detection and uncovering fraud, and are legally liable for subsequently discovered misstatement in audited financial statements. Reporting intentions of an auditor to the concerned body depends upon the type of fraudulent act basically if it is investigative audit than financial statement audit. Fraud, in general, was not perceived to be a major problem in Ethiopian. Unwillingness to look for fraud because of fear of spoiling good relationship with clients, too much trust placed on the auditees, management and employees, auditor not giving enough emphasis to audit quality, management not having fraud policy; and, failure to focus on high-risk fraud areas. Fraudsters collusion, Absence of clear interpretation of tax law /proclamation, absence of well-organized professional body in Ethiopia are listed among the most important challenges of auditors fail to detect fraud. The study also finds that the five variables which are certification, practical experience, training, audit fee, and independence significantly influence the auditor’s expert performance to fraud detection.
The study suggests that Auditors need to “audit smarter which can be accomplished by the need for auditors to be more aware in context which the audit occurs and the fact that the nature and concentration of fraud varies by industry and auditors should be aware of the development of their profession.

▼ Capital structure decision is the vital one since the profitability of an enterprise is directly
affected by such decision. The determination of a company’s capital structure constitutes
a difficult decision, one that involves several and antagonistic factors, such as risk and
profitability. That decision becomes even more difficult, in times when the economic
environment in which the company operates presents a high degree of instability. A
review of empirical works reveals that there exists conflicting results about the
relationship between capital structure and profitability of companies. Some studies found
a negative relationship between profitability and leverage while others observed a
positive relationship between profitability and debt levels in their studies. The objective
of this study was to investigate the relationship between capital structure and profitability
of listed non financial firms in Kenya over the 5 year period from 2008 to 2012 after the
financial crisis of 2007. The study adopted a descriptive research design. The target
population of this study comprised of all the 40 listed non financial firms. A census was
carried out due to the small number of non financial firms in Kenya. The study used
secondary data extracted from annual financial reports. Descriptive data analysis
techniques and regression were used to analyse the data. The long-term liability to equity
indicated an inverse relationship to profitability at -5.70%, with an adjusted coefficient of
determination of 97.80%. The study also found that the firm’s profitability (measured by
return on equity) was positively correlated with the short-term debt at 18.10% and longterm
debt (LP/PL) at 56.20%. The study concludes that there is a negative relationship
between capital structure and profitability. The results are in line with the pecking order
theory and information asymmetrical theory. The study recommends that firm’s should
aim to attain a debt/equity ratio, which will minimize the cost of capital and increase the
profitability of firms. The top management of every firm should make prudent financing
decisions in order to remain profitable and competitive. Further research could also be
undertaken to examine capital structure and profitability of non listed firms in Kenya.
Further investigation is required to examine what factors other than capital structure
influence profitability.

determining the·factors which multinational firms cons~der
important when deciding on the most country to invest in.
Secondly, the study was aimed at determining the adequacy of
the investment incentives offered by the Government of Kenya
to the foreign investors.
In order to meet these objectives, information was sought
through the use of a questionnaire. The questionnaire was
directed to the General Managers or Managing Directors of
multinational firms operating in Kenya. The latter had been
sampled using simple random sampling method.
The data collected was ana~yzed using mean scores, Yates
Chi .-square, median te~t and Spearman's rank correlation test.
Using these, the responses from the service oriented multinational
firms were compqred with those from the manufacturing oriented
multinational firms. The findings from the analyses led to two
major conclusions:-
(1) The factors considered important for foreign investment
decision differed significantly between service oriented
and manufacturing multinational firms.

▼ This study was set to establish the extent of e-procurement implementation by pharmaceutical firms in Kenya. In order to achieve this, the study set three research objectives namely; to establish the extent of e-procurement implementation by pharmaceutical firms in Nairobi, to determine the relationship between e-procurement and firm performance of pharmaceutical firms in Nairobi, and to find out the challenges faced by pharmaceutical firms in Nairobi when implementing e-procurement. The study used a descriptive research design to conduct the research. Questionnaires were the main data collection tools used by the researcher to collect data from the 40 respondents selected through a simple random sampling procedure. Descriptive statistics such as frequency distribution and percentages were used to analyze general information collected while means were used to analyze e-procurement practices, operational performance and challenges of e-procurement. Regression analysis was used to explain the relationship between e-procurement and organizational performance of pharmaceutical firms in Nairobi. Results revealed that E-Communication and E-Tendering are implemented to a great extent while E-Sourcing, E-Order Processing and E- Auctioning are implemented to a moderate extent. The study also established that there is a strong relationship between e-procurement and operational performance of pharmaceutical firms in Nairobi, Kenya. The study also found out that the most faced challenge is the high costs of implementing e-procurement. Other challenges faced to a moderate extent include high cost of training staff and poor e-Procurement implementation strategy. The researcher therefore recommends pharmaceutical firms to implement e-procurement in their procurement operations to improve the performance of their firms. The study also recommends that pharmaceutical firms should manage the rising costs associated with implementing e-procurement. On the other hand, the study encountered non-response while conducting the research. Some of the respondents also had difficulty understanding the questions in the questionnaire. Finally, the study recommends further research to be carried out in non-pharmaceutical firms order to improve on the study findings and policy change recommendations arising from this study to facilitate making of more adequate conclusions

▼ The objective of the study was three fold: to determine improvement approaches
followed by large scale manufacturing firms, to evaluate the effects of supply chain
improvement approaches on performance and establish possible challenges faced by large
scale manufacturing firms in implementation of improvement approaches. Data was
unruffled using questionnaires and evaluated by means of frequencies and mean tools,
where the response rate was 87.6%. The findings indicated that a strong relationship of
various SC improvement approaches as adopted by large scale manufacturing firms has a
strong positive impact on Supply Chain performance. Companies adopted lean systems,
Kaizen, IT, business process re-engineering, were more efficient and effective. However,
although the SC have contributed significantly to the firms performance, more needs to
be done to invest in IT and infrastructure to improve the quality of goods and cut down
on costs; and also training of staff to improve their productivity. The study established

▼ This research was conducted to establish the influence of internal marketing strategies on
growth of new products within insurance firms in Kenya. The paper assumed a
descriptive enquiry design with the theoretical population for the analysis consisting of
forty (40) registered insurance companies headquartered in Nairobi but with operations in
Mombasa County. The study targeted the top-level executives, line managers and crossdepartmental
employees to enable collection of representative data. Primary and
secondary data was gathered and utilized to generate both qualitative and quantitative
data. The quantitative data was examined using descriptive data analysis where data
obtained from the questionnaires was processed via editing, coding and keying into the
processor using SPSS. From these data, it emerged that low growth of insurance products
in Kenya is indeed a factor of minimal application or total absence of internal marketing
strategies that are instrumental in motivating employees who are the internal customers of
the firm. The study concluded that employees in the insurance industry were keen on
motivation, training and development as well as empowerment, attributes that are key in
making them competent and armed with the vital skills to dispense insurance products to
the external market. The study recommends that insurance firms apply internal
marketing strategies in order to provide an enabling environment for employees to thrive
and stay motivated to propagate the company’s product offerings with value addition to
the external customers. Focus on registered insurance firms was considered a limitation
as more information could be gathered from other distribution channels hence, the study
suggested a further investigation incorporating all the distribution channels of insurance
products that is, the brokers and agencies to enable comprehensive findings with all
stakeholders’ contributions taken into consideration.

▼ The interference of quality management practices has brought excellent impact on the rampant organizational endeavors. Previous researches have indicated that when quality management practices are applied, positive effects within the organizational networking can attest to its establishment. It is essential for the organization to implement quality management interventions to attain competitive control; externally and internally. The objectives of the study were; to establish quality management practices among manufacturing firms in Nairobi City County; to establish the performance of firms in manufacturing industry in Nairobi City County; to determine the relationship between quality management and performance of firms in the manufacturing industry in Nairobi City County. The study was guided by the three theories; quality improvement theory, theory of constraint and Resource-Based View (RBV).
The research design used was descriptive survey method. A sample of 70 manufacturing firms in Nairobi County was selected which is 12.75% of the target population. The data collected comprised of primary data that was both quantitative and qualitative. Both descriptive and inferential statistics was used to analyze the data. From the data collected the respondents reported that continuous quality improvement is practiced between a very large extent and large extent. Most activities in continuous quality improvement are practiced to a large extent.
From the findings all activities show that customer focus practices have been adopted in the respective organizations at large extent. All activities show that top management commitment practices have been adopted in the respective organizations at large extent. It was established that Quality management was embraced in the vision of the company to a large extent as shown by a mean of 4.02. All activities show that ISO 9000 practices have been adopted in the respective organizations at large extent with the mean ranging from 3.61 to 3.92.
The successful implementation of quality programs depends on workforce. If manufacturing industry would have more trained, involved and empowered employees it is more likely to realize benefits of implementation of quality management techniques. The findings of research study suggest that management of manufacturing industry should be more involved in quality improvement programs.
Therefore, this study recommends that manufacturing firms should consider adopting and implementing other quality management practices for example ISO 9000 and compare the benefits and the challenges of these quality management practices. This will provide a better platform of choosing the quality management practices that lead to improved organizational performance. The study also recommends that manufacturing firms in Kenya should benchmark themselves with the best performing firms globally in order to find out the quality management practices that the firms use in enhancing competitiveness. This will shed more light on the best quality management practices to adapt…

▼ The aim of the research project was to establish maintenance scheduling practices in
energy sector in Kenya and to evaluate their relationship with the firms’ operations
performances in terms of plant availabilities and cost of operations and maintenance.
Power generation availability was considered along cost of operations and maintenance
to be best indicators of performance because dispatch of electric energy is controlled
nationally on based on demand at any given time.
The research was done with a target population comprising of all energy generation
technologies in Kenya that is hydro, geothermal, wind, gas, thermal and wind. The
research used primary data that was collected through emailed questionnaires to
maintenance engineers and managers of power generation stations who are responsible
for day to day operations and maintenance.
The research found out that maintenance scheduling practices are being applied across all
the energy generation mix but with varying intensity. Giving priority to critical tasks is
strongly applied across all energy generation mix while supervisor’s handling daily
schedule without necessarily following the laid down program is least applied.
The research established that there is a strong relationship between maintenance
scheduling principles and operation performance in Kenya energy sector. It was
concluded that maintenance scheduling practices contributes approximately 67% of
operations performance.
The study recommended that a further study be carried out to establish the other 33%
factors that affect operations performance in order to achieve operations performance
excellence in Kenya energy sector.

▼ The paper was commissioned to find out the effect of inflation rate on the CCC of listed Manufacturing firms at the NSE for a period of five years between 2010 -2014.A two tail non-directional hypothesis test of statistical significance at 95% confidence interval shows that the model is statistically significant and persistent in explaining the variation of CCC. The Pearson correlation shows a negative relationship among the variables with the size of the company, inflation rate and interest rate accounting for 7.34%, 0.22% and 0.068% of the variation in the CCC respectively. The log-log random effects regression model established a negative statistically significant relationship between size and CCC,a negative statistically insignificant relationship between CCC and inflation, a positive statistically significant relationship with CCC and a positive constant which is statistically different from zero. The significance of the constant is consistent with prudent working capital management practices which require that manufacturing firms maintain an optimal level of liquidity that is necessary for honoring maturing obligations. The explanatory variables were tested for statistical significance using the P-test, at 95% confidence level. The results demonstrated that a 1% increase in the size of the firm leads to a decrease of CCC by 21.5%, 1% increase in inflation decreases the CCC by 24.5% indicating that inflation and CCC has a negative relationship, however an increase in interest rate leads to an increase in CCC by 8%, as interest rates increase the opportunity cost of money increases and traders get motivated to shift to credit transactions. The results also shows that every company need to finance 8 days of the CCC, this is the autonomous CCC that is independent of any event.
