▼ This paper studies the effect that appointing
financial experts to banks’ audit committees has on banks’ loan
loss
provision timeliness. The loan loss
provision is the amount
that banks set aside to cover losses on loans. Because the
provision estimate affects banks’ profits, credit risk management,
and the overall economy, understanding banks’ provisioning practice
is a topical issue in the literature (Beatty and Liao 2011; Bushman
and Williams 2012). I identify two regulatory shocks that
implemented audit committee expertise provisions as quasi-natural
experiments and investigate the effects on loan loss
provision
timeliness. Specifically, the two regulatory shocks I consider are
the Federal Depository Insurance Corporation Improvement Act of
1991 (FDICIA) and a listing standard for NYSE and NASDAQ firms
legislated in 1999. I classify treatment and control groups based
on the regulatory asset threshold, and find that treatment group
banks make more timely recognition of expected losses than control
group banks. Building on these results, I examine the effects of
appointing different types of
financial experts on bank audit
committees. Specifically, I consider former affiliated auditors,
former unaffiliated auditors, former regulators, and those who are
neither former auditors nor former regulators (Others). Using
propensity score weighting, I find that appointing affiliated
auditors is associated with less timely loan loss provisions
relative to appointing unaffiliated auditors. Furthermore, I show
that hiring former regulators is associated with less timely loan
loss provisions relative to hiring Others or unaffiliated auditors.
My findings suggest that audit committee
financial expertise
increases the timeliness of loan loss recognition; however, having
audit committee members who are affiliated with the bank’s auditors
or regulators could result in delayed recognition of loan
losses.

▼ The programme provision in a third of further education (FE) colleges in England is poorly designed, according to Ofsted which inspect colleges in England, and does not provide post-16-year-olds the skills needed for employment. The policy landscape shapes the complex FE college environment. Often programme decision-making at strategic level does not respond to stakeholders’ needs or achieve stability and sustainability of these institutions. The aim of this research was to analyse programme decision-making in FE colleges in England. It focused on how FE colleges use the opportunities and constraints presented by their locality and context to tailor their programme provision whilst under pressure to meet the local needs for the provision of education and training and the expectations of the Ofsted inspection framework. A review of literature on the theories and models of decision-making led to the formation of research questions and a framework for the analysis of programme decision-making in FE college environment. Empirical data was collected by means of college principals and other senior managers in three contrasting FE colleges in England. Documentary analysis provided stimulus for interview questions and corroboration of evidence. The research found that programme decision-making is influenced by the opportunities and constraints presented by the locality of the FE college and a number of internal and external factors. It shows that FE leaders and managers who prioritise leadership for learning, which is characterised by a strong focus on learners’ learning experience, implement management approaches to the organisation of programme provision. Such focus informs the strategic directions to achieve effectiveness of programme provision and accountability, increase engagement with stakeholders and improve the sustainability of the college. The study shows that effective programme decision-making requires a collaborative approach involving the participation of stakeholders to provide a solution-driven method to managing programme provision in FE colleges.

Clinicians working with adult cochlear implant (CI) users often recommend auditory training (AT) as an intervention to improve listening abilities. Lack of robust evidence and inconsistencies in AT studies, however, limits confidence in the usefulness of this intervention. This thesis assessed the effectiveness of AT for adult CI users in the context of clinical decision-making, resource allocation and evidence-based practice in a series of three manuscripts.
First, AT practices and their associated costs were assessed using data from a survey distributed to Australian audiologists working with adult CI users (n=78, 33% response rate). Is was demonstrated that clinicians believe AT is beneficial, and adopt varied methods to deliver AT. Costs incurred for clients who receive AT were estimated to range from AUD 0 to AUD 1438.98 per program, depending on the AT method of delivery.
Second, a randomised crossover study investigated the effectiveness of a computer-based auditory training (CBAT) program, in comparison to a computer-based visual training (VT) program, on measures of listening and cognitive abilities, and self-reported communication and quality of life in 26 adult CI users. It was demonstrated that although on-task improvement occurred for both the AT and the VT programs, these improvements did not transfer to the outcome measures assessed post-training and at follow-up.
Finally, a rapid review of nine CBAT studies in adult CI users was conducted. Inconsistencies in training stimuli, outcome measures and study findings associated to risk of bias present within and across studies, indicated that current evidence provides very low confidence that AT can improve speech perception, and low confidence that it can improve cognitive abilities, self-reported listening and quality of life in adult CI users.
This thesis provides practical and up-to-date evidence about AT in adult CI users which can influence both current clinical practices and future research studies.

▼ The study has two objectives: to identify the users and their information needs of Sri Lankan small and medium enterprises (SMEs)
financial information; and to examine the need for internationally comparable accounting information for Sri Lankan SMEs. The findings clarify issues with the current SME
financial reporting standards and provide useful insights to assist in developing an appropriate reporting framework for Sri Lankan SMEs. An analysis of the literature reveals a paucity of empirical research on
financial reporting by SMEs and little about the users and their
financial information needs in the context of developing countries. No prior empirical research that examines the effects of adopting the International
Financial Reporting Standard for Small and Medium Enterprises (IFRS for SMEs) in Sri Lanka was found to exist.
This thesis contributes to the literature, through applying a mixed methods approach. A questionnaire survey was used to collect data from 323 accountants and owners of SMEs. Quantitative data was analysed using a statistical package for social sciences. The responses are subdivided into three categories: small; medium and large SMEs to reveal differences according to size. Forty-one face-to-face semi-structured interviews were conducted with accountants and owners, bank lending officers, income tax officers, and representatives from government agencies, and the accounting standards setting authority of Sri Lanka. Follow-up interviews were conducted with the same group of interviewees to obtain their comments on a proposed
financial reporting framework. Qualitative data was analysed using thematic analysis via the NVivo software. Institutional theory was adopted as the theoretical framework to study Sri Lanka’s decision to adopt the IFRS for SMEs.
This decision was in response to institutional pressures rather than alleged benefits of internationally comparable
financial information. Coercive institutional pressures are the most obvious which drove the adoption of IFRS for SMEs both at country and individual firm levels. SMEs do not see any need to provide internationally comparable accounting information due to their limited cross border activities. Many of the accounting topics included in the IFRS for SMEs appear to be irrelevant. The prime users of the
financial information are owner-managers, banks, and the Inland Revenue Department. Government institutions are also users of
financial information, particularly for the large SMEs. Users and their
financial information needs vary according to the size of the SME. The results indicate that SME
financial statements are unable to meet the needs of the main users. Tax oriented reporting, a lack of detail and a lack of up-to-date information are the main weakneses in SME
financial statements. Further, users indicate the existing
financial reporting framework, based on general purpose
financial reporting, is neither cost effective nor relevant to the diverse SME sector in Sri Lanka.
Based on the findings, a framework for Sri Lankan SME…

▼ Schools today are entrusted with the duty of managing their funds in such a way that that the educational outcomes of the primary beneficiaries of these funds are maximised. This places more responsibility on the school governing bodies as the legal custodians of these funds, at local level, which need to be used economically, effectively and efficiently. To achieve this, school governing bodies need capacity in the form of appropriate skills and knowledge needed to connect school funding to educational outcomes. This study focuses on how capacity building for school governing body can contribute to value for money in school
financial management. It sought to examine possible impediments to effective
financial management, which result from the existing gaps in the current capacity building programmes and the
financial management frameworks and procedures relating to school
financial management. A qualitative research methodology involving in-depth interviews with members of governing bodies and Circuit officials was followed to examine the problem and possible improvement strategies. Themes that emerged from the data include, comprehensiveness, duration and frequency of the training programme, competency of training facilitators, monitoring, assessment and evaluation and other follow-up modalities, presentation style of the training facilitators, internal records and audited
financial statements, the involvement of senior officials in school
financial management, and the effectiveness of
financial management. Findings suggested that, training of SGBs in
financial management is inadequate, training facilitators lack requisite skills, the duration of the training for SGBs is short, the training programme is not provided frequently, the training programme’s presentation style is ineffective, mismatch between internal records and audited
financial statements, lack of support and monitoring by circuit officials in the schools’
financial management, questionable conduct of external auditors, and ineffective cluster approach by SGBs.

Excessive risk-taking in the Russian banking sector - the cases of FC Otkritie and B&N Bank.

In 2017 the Russian banking sector faced two remarkable events – the Central Bank of Russia introduced temporary administrations at and started financial rehabilitation of FC Otkritie and B&N Bank, privately owned banks ranked among 15 largest credit institutions countrywide.
The aim of this paper is the analysis of risk-taking indicators of these banks in order to clarify whether excessive risk appetite of these entities led to their economic failure or whether other factors played a decisive role. The analysis is based on available bank-level data, namely balance sheet information disclosed by FC Otkritie and B&N Bank according to Russian accounting standards as well as IFRS.
The assessment of bank-level indicators provides the following conclusions. First, the growth in bank risk does not necessarily lead to the economic failure of individual institutions in the short
term, but it makes them more vulnerable towards external shocks. Risk metrics of both banks demonstrated the increase in risk appetite during 2015, however since then they remained stable, except for asset…

▼ In recent years, mutual funds have become one of the important
financial instruments for investors. Mutual funds have advantages such as risk spreading as well as investments with small portions. However, it becomes a dilemma for investors to choose suitable funds to gain decent profits with a minor risk. In addition, with the improvement of medical science, the situation of aging society in Taiwan is more severe than other countries. Also the nominal wage increasing rate cannot withstand the increasing of inflation. Therefore,
financial management for retirement seems to be an issue for investors. In order to maintain the quality of retirement, investors are more careful in choosing
financial instruments. Mutual funds seem to be the first choice for investors in
financial management for retirement because factors such as retirement age and risk preference are considered and adjusted in mutual funds, so portfolios in mutual funds are considered to be conservative.
Global funds are one of the funds with lower risks due to the separated investment areas and not affecting by single country. Therefore, the characteristics qualify investors whose needs are saving for retirement. This research discuss advantages and disadvantages of global funds in
financial management for retirement as well as for investors as a guide.
This research discusses the differences in returns and risks of funds via rate of return and Sharpe Ratio, and uses multiple regression analysis to find what macroeconomic factors will be affect. The conclusion of this research is global emerging market bond fund can be represented as a higher return with lower risk fund and suitable for
financial management for retirement.

▼ Cognitive impairment from Parkinson’s disease can limit performance in daily activities, reduce participation in social/leisure activities, and increase caregiver burden. A 5-week treatment program was developed to train the use of smartphone applications to support cognitive functioning in personally-relevant activities. Voice commands were selected as an efficient access method to address progressive motor impairment in PD, and the principles of systematic instruction were incorporated throughout treatment. Two participants with cognitive impairment secondary to Parkinson’s disease completed training in reminder and calendar application skills using voice commands. Both participants demonstrated improvements across measures of skill acquisition (accuracy, success) and treatment impact (Goal Attainment Scaling, questionnaires) immediately following treatment and maintained most gains at two-month follow-up.

▼ ENGLISH SUMMARY : Background: The regular use of clinical practice guidelines (CPGs) has been promoted as a way of improving care, standardising clinical decisions and treatment. However, the intervention‘s reported in the randomised controlled clinical trials (RCTs) used in CPGs is typically not fully described and may lack description making it difficult to replicate in clinical practice. There was thus need to investigate ways in which the CPG-recommended interventions could be delineated into a more clinician-friendly format, so that it could be easier to replicate in practice and therefore ensure evidence-based practice. This study will form part of a larger project.
Objective: To evaluate the descriptions of physiotherapy
rehabilitation interventions of self-help and education for people with specifically knee osteoarthritis (OA) in CPGs and more recent RCTs, in terms of the detail provided, and how readily they could be replicated in clinical practice. It will act as a process to ascertain logistics of methods required to extract data for intervention descriptions and form part of a larger project investigating methods in which CPGs can be made more clinician friendly.
Methodology: The most recent and the highest quality CPGs for community based
rehabilitation for adults living with knee OA was accessed through data clearing houses. The CPGs were critically appraised using the iCACHE tool to ensure that the guideline is of the highest quality. The RCTs that were used to compile the systematic reviews on self-help and education in the CPGs for knee OA, was retrieved and evaluated. An updated search was conducted in Pubmed and PEDro computerised databases for the RCTs published after the CPGs release date. The quality of the RCTs was critically appraised by making use of the PEDro scale. A standard evaluation approach was then taken, using a recently-published checklist, the Template for Intervention Description and Replication Checklist (TIDieR) tool, to assess elements of
rehabilitation interventions used. Results were summarised using pie charts, tables or in narrative form.
Results: Two CPGs were retrieved and a total of nine RCTs trials included in this review. The results of the TIDieR revealed that certain aspects were adequately described, such as ‘name of the intervention’ (77.78%), ‘intervention rationale for essential elements’ (100%), ‘description of the intervention procedures’ (88.89%), ‘mode of delivery of intervention’ (100%) and ‘details about the number; duration, intensity, and dose of intervention sessions’ (88.89%). Other aspects however scored less adequately such as ‘intervention materials and details about how to access them’ (22.22%), ‘details of intervention providers’ (44.44%), ‘location of intervention delivery and key infrastructure’ (0%), ‘details of any intervention tailoring’ (11.11%), ‘any intervention modifications throughout the study’ (0%), and ‘details of intervention fidelity assessment, monitoring, and level achieved’ (11.11%).
Conclusion: Despite the availability of…

▼ Discharge readiness following total knee replacement (TKR) has often been defined using quantitative factors, such as knee range of motion or walking a specified distance. These measurements fail to include other features that could impact readiness for discharge, such as social support or patient perceptions. Most patients have positive results following TKR surgery, however others experience negative outcomes such as falls, reduced functional performance, and hospital readmission. Readiness for returning home after TKR begins with pre-operative education to prepare patients for surgery and the post-operative phase. Health care providers must have a clear understanding of patients’ perceptions of readiness to return home after surgery. It is also essential to describe the current structure of pre-operative education nationally as a mechanism for better preparing patients to return home following knee replacement.
This dissertation includes three studies that explore aspects of discharge readiness following TKR including patients’ perceptions of readiness for discharge as well as the structure of pre-operative education for TKR across the United States. The first study examined patients’ experiences preparing for discharge home from the acute care setting following TKR surgery. Results indicated that patients felt prepared overall for discharge and received appropriate supports for returning home after surgery, but some felt unprepared for certain aspects of recovery such as the amount of pain experienced in the post-operative phase. The second study surveyed health care providers who participated in pre-operative education before TKR to identify the current structure of education programs in the United States. This pilot study revealed that pre-operative education teams were commonly interprofessional with education being typically provided in a group format in a single session lasting between 1 and 1.5 hours. Verbal and written instruction were common delivery methods to provide education.
The final dissertation study used mixed-methods to explore the current structure of pre-operative education for TKR in the United States with a large, national sample. Orthopedic nurses completed an online survey to describe their pre-operative education program. The majority of participants provided pre-operative education as part of interprofessional teams in either a group format or a format that included both group and individual education. Verbal instruction was the most common educational delivery method followed by written instruction. Most pre-operative education classes lasted between 1 and 1.5 hours, were delivered in a single session, and included a variety of topics. Ten orthopedic nurses were then interviewed and interview transcripts were analyzed qualitatively for common themes among participants. Participants expressed that pre-operative education was a significant component impacting patient outcomes following surgery. Interprofessional pre-operative education was valued by participants, but pragmatic factors…

▼ The Q-bell is a newly developed call bell system that aims to simplify the lives of people living with disabilities by providing a means for them to easily summon assistance from caregivers when needed. The product is designed to be hands free so that a patient only must exert minimal pressure on the device with any part of the body such as the cheek to call for attention. The aim of this study was to explore and describe the experiences of disabled participants regarding the functionality of the Q-bell systems during their stay in a care facility. To achieve this aim, an exploratory, descriptive, contextual, qualitative design was decided upon. There was a paucity of similar studies and this method was deemed the most effective method to fully grasp, contextualize and interpret the experiences of the research participants following the use of the Q-bell. The research population included all people with disabilities who were in care facilities. A purposive sampling method was used to identify a small number of disabled participants in care facilities to use the Q-bell. The researcher approached selected facilities and the residents in their care who had limited to no function of their hands and arms to test the Q-bell. The participants were given the Q-bell to use for 2-3 days, after which semi-structured interviews with participating individuals were conducted. Due to difficulties the researcher had with the infrastructure at the facilities eight participants were approached and interviewed in this study. All the interviews were conducted in private, but face to face, at the bedside of each participant, in the facilities of care. Digital voice recordings of these interviews were made after informed consent being sought from the participants. Verbatim transcripts of the recordings were made and a thematic analysis using Tesch’s method, was performed by the researcher followed by a consensus meeting with the independent coder. Ethical considerations such as beneficence, justice, autonomy, informed consent was adhered to by the researcher. Trustworthiness was achieved by following Guba’s principles of credibility, applicability, consistency and neutrality. Three themes emerged from the data analysis. Theme one highlighted the participants’ experiences whilst using the Q-bell. Theme two reflected the positive characteristics of the Q-bell when compared to other call devices the participants might have used while theme three posed possible recommendations the participants had to possibly improve on the design of the Q-bell. The research report concludes with the research limitations and recommendations.

Does the Financial Reporting Transparency of Securitization Affect Bank Lending Decisions?.

▼ This thesis examines the effect of financial reporting transparency for securitization on banks' mortgage lending decisions. Prior research (e.g., Mian & Sufi 2009, Keys, Mukherjee, Seru, & Vig 2010} shows that securitization reduces banks' incentives to screen and monitor borrowers. I posit that transparency plays a significant role by affecting bank stakeholders' ability to monitor and discipline bank lending decisions. I identify three specific channels for monitoring and discipline, namely corporate governance, regulatory oversight, and market discipline by uninsured depositors. I hypothesize that transparency affects bank risk-taking in mortgage lending, and that monitoring and discipline from external stakeholders moderates this effect.
I test my hypotheses using difference-in-differences tests around five FASB pronouncements relating to securitization, issued since 1996, of which one decreases and the others increase transparency. I obtain loan-level data to construct new measures of bank risk-taking in mortgage lending based on the borrower income, loan amount and property location. I validate the proposed measures using bank-level future mortgage delinquencies and charge-offs.
The main results generally do not support my hypotheses. I find that, in most cases, the effect of transparency on risk-taking is either insignificant or in the opposite direction of the prediction. These findings are robust to multiple sensitivity tests. However, I find some evidence supporting my hypotheses when comparing bank lending decisions during the least transparent period to those during the most transparent period within my sample.
As a whole, my findings support the null hypothesis that transparency does not affect banks' risk-taking in their mortgage lending decisions. This conclusion is counter-intuitive and contrary to the commonly held view that transparency promotes better stakeholder monitoring of bank risk-taking. I identify alternative explanations for the null results, including: (i) whether the accounting pronouncements affect transparency as expected, (ii) the complexity of the setting, and (iii) potential noise in the data sources and the development of my measures.
This thesis contributes to the literature in multiple ways. The proposed risk-measures might prove useful to future researchers examining risk-taking in mortgage lending. My findings are also relevant to the branches of literature examining the effect of securitization on bank lending decisions, the effect of transparency on bank risk-taking, and the real effects of accounting standards. This thesis might also be useful to standard setters and regulators in their attempt to improve financial reporting quality and to promote better decision making.

▼ Background: Maternal mortality is a common event for women in the poorer parts of the world. The maternal mortality ratio in Ethiopia is 412 per 100,000 live births. Most high burden countries including Ethiopia have strategies to provide skilled maternity care yet very few are making progress, due at least in part to not ensuring quality facility childbirth care. In Ethiopia, there are no studies on woreda (district) level factors associated with skilled birth attendance (SBA) rates, and evidence on quality of Labour and Delivery (L&D) care is generally scarce. Therefore, this project aimed at closing this gap. Methods: Two quantitative studies were conducted. The first study described variation in woreda SBA rates (N=839) and determinants of higher rates using a cross-sectional ecologic study design. The second study examined quality of birthing care in government hospitals (n=20) of Southern Nations and Nationalities Region (SNNPR) by collecting primary data, using a cross-sectional study design. Key findings: The first study showed that the mean woreda-level SBA rate in Ethiopia was low at an ecologic level, but with substantial variations. Women's families, the wider community, availability of health resources, and proportion of four or more antenatal care significantly increased the SBA rate. The second study revealed gaps in the structural, process and outcome aspects of quality of L&D care in the hospitals. About two thirds of the required inputs were fulfilled, and only two hospitals fulfilled almost all the standards. Laboratory services and safe blood, essential drugs, supplies and equipment were the areas with the largest gaps. In terms of process quality, about two thirds of the standards were met overall for each woman for which she was eligible. The highest scores were achieved with immediate and essential newborn care practices, and care during the second and third stages of labour. History of a danger sign in the current pregnancy had a positive effect on the process quality at the level of each woman. At hospital level, teaching status and structural quality index score had significant positive effects, whilst annual L&D service volume had a significant negative effect on the process quality index score. Perceived quality of L&D care provided was also suboptimal. Being illiterate, absence of a complication after birth, perceived high quality of interpersonal communication and emotional support, responsiveness, health education and physical environment; all positively influenced women's overall experience. Furthermore, teaching status and primary or general level of hospitals, staff training, and high quality of L&D care process index also positively affected the experience. Recommendations: It is essential to increase the coverage of four or more ANC visits and strengthen the current community-based approaches to meaningfully increase the SBA rate. There is a need to ensure that all hospitals meet the required structure to enable the provision of quality routine L&D care, with particular emphasis on…

▼ Physical activity (PA) is widely considered the core component of a cardiac rehabilitation (CR) participant’s program due its direct relationship to morbidity and mortality in patients with coronary heart disease (CHD). Despite the health benefits associated with PA, adherence to regular PA after completion of CR and precise PA assessments remain a challenge. Thus, the overall aim of this thesis was to promote PA among CR participants, and to determine an appropriate valid and reliable tool to monitor or measure PA among this population.
This thesis is comprised of four interdependent studies. PA outcomes were assessed in the short and longer term (4 and 12 months) for a cohort of participants (n=134) who had completed CR or diabetes education and were engaged in a lifestyle intervention; namely, the Healthy Eating and Exercise Lifestyle Program (HEELP). The independent predictors of PA at these times were identified, and an analysis of patients’ reports on barriers to PA and their relationship to one of the key predictors (self-efficacy) were identified in the first study. Additionally, the validity and reliability of PA measures in CR participants was determined by performing a systematic literature review for eight studies comparing two or more PA measures with at least one direct measure. Finally, the validity of one of the most common and recommended wearable PA trackers, Fitbit-Flex, was assessed against the Actigraph accelerometer (a gold standard PA measurement device) for measuring daily step counts and minutes of moderate to vigorous physical activity (MVPA) in patients and their family members (n=48) attending CR Phase III.
Physical activity improved substantially in HEELP participants to almost one hour (from 189 to 305 minutes/week of MVPA) at 4 months (i.e. the intervention phase of HEELP). However, this gain was not sustained (declined to 253 minutes/week of MVPA) in the longer term at 12 months (i.e. the maintenance phase of HEELP). Time, depressive symptoms, male gender and self-efficacy were predictors of PA levels at 12 months. Higher self-efficacy at baseline and male gender were associated with more confidence to engage in PA. However, less confidence to engage in PA was associated with more depressive symptoms, having a CHD diagnosis, higher body mass index (BMI) and lack of motivation. Change in PA behaviours and maintaining the level of PA can be difficult to achieve, even when engaged in a lifestyle-change program such as HEELP. Participants encountered numerous barriers to PA, the most common of which were lack of motivation and lack of time. Lack of motivation only improved statistically from baseline to four months. These findings are important for CR settings as they better inform the development of effective interventions aiming to initiate and maintain PA behaviour over the long term.
The systematic review determined that direct PA measures, especially when using wearable PA trackers, are more valid and reliable than self-report measures in the assessment of free-living PA…

▼ Customer behavior has always been of interest for business researchers. However, it is just in recent years that there has been an increasing interest in the phenomenon of the sharing economy. It has been suggested that there is an ongoing shift in the traditional way of consuming. The idea behind the sharing economy is that two different parties can make use of their underused assets through an online platform. Previous quantitative research in the area of interest mainly focuses on the motivational factors for participation in the sharing economy; four of the most prominent factors were therefore identified and further investigated. In this thesis, these factors are referred to as drivers and more specifically, the drivers of enjoyment, sustainability, convenience, and financial benefits. Further, previous research gives an indication of a discrepancy between customer attitudes and actions when making a decision in the sharing economy. With this in mind, the purpose of this thesis is to describe customer behavior in the sharing economy. More specifically, this thesis seeks to study the relationship between attitudes and actions of customers in the sharing economy. Taking this into account, the following research question was formulated: What is the relationship between attitudes and actions of the customers participating in the sharing economy of Rentl AB? In order to fulfill the purpose of this thesis, the Swedish sharing economy business Rentl was addressed. To answer the research question a quantitative research strategy was followed where a survey was sent out to randomly chosen customers of Rentl and 145 responses were collected. The collected data was statistically analyzed by the use of Paired T-tests and Regression Analyses. Further, the empirical findings regarding the four identified drivers were analyzed in accordance with the theoretical framework. The identified attitude-action gap is therefore analyzed by the application of basic customer decision-making, the theory of Bounded Rationality, the Theory of Reasoned Action & the Theory of Planned Behavior, and finally the Self-Determination Theory. The authors established that there is a positive relationship between attitudes and actions regarding the extrinsic drivers, convenience and financial benefits. However, it was further established that the intrinsic drivers, enjoyment and sustainability, do not have a significant influence on the actual actions. In other words, a positive attitude toward enjoyment and sustainability as drivers for participation in the sharing economy does not necessarily translate into actions. Thus, the authors identified that there is an attitude-action gap in the sharing economy. In addition to the theoretical contributions, this research further contributes with practical aspects. More importantly, the sharing business Rentl is provided with a better…

▼ College enrollment and completion rates among low-income and historically underserved students are lower than those of their middle- and upper-income counterparts. "Promise scholarships," also known as "last dollar" scholarships, are becoming an increasingly popular way for states throughout the U.S. to incentivize postsecondary attendance by providing free tuition at community colleges. Scholarly research is necessary in order to evaluate whether promise scholarship programs are effective in addressing issues related to postsecondary students' enrollment, persistence, and success and to identify potential policy solutions regarding funding, student eligibility, and awarding parameters. Using a combined framework of the financial aspects of social capital theory, price sensitivity theory, and student choice theory, this descriptive and inferential quantitative study seeks to answer the central research question of: What was the impact of the Hawai'i Promise Scholarship Program's in its first year of implementation? How do grade point average, credits earned and Federal student loan borrowing of Hawai'i Promise Scholarship recipients compare to non-recipients? Results indicated that 1,442 students benefited from a Hawai'i Promise Scholarship, with a mean scholarship award of 1,200, making the direct cost of education for recipients completely covered by grant and scholarship assistance (and in some cases, including 25% of the student's FAFSA-determined EFC). The mean EFC of recipients was 4,432 and approximately 67.5% of the Hawai'i Promise Scholarship recipients were Native Hawaiian or Part Hawaiian, Filipino, or Mixed-Race (more than 2), and though students who qualified for the maximum Federal Pell Grant of 5,920 were not eligible for a Hawai'i Promise Scholarship because their Federal Pell Grant covered their entire amount of direct educational costs, nearly 60% of Hawai'i Promise Scholarship recipients did receive some amount of Federal Pell Grant amount, with a mean 1,986 Pell Grant award. This research adds to the growing body of knowledge about promise scholarship programs by investigating the outcome of the first year of such a program at the community colleges within an indigenous-serving university system and suggests that promise scholarship programs have a positive impact on the academic success of recipients. While there was no statistically significant difference in Federal student loan borrowing of the Hawai'i Promise Scholarship recipients compared to other FAFSA completers, Hawai'i Promise Scholarship recipients did earn a statistically significant higher average cumulative GPA than all of their counterpart groups, and they also earned a statistically significant higher average number of academic year credits than other students. These results imply that these types of state promise scholarship programs are working, but that further research is needed for evidence-based policy decision-making and for more effective financial aid awarding practices.

Thousands of business failures end every year, which leads to consequences for both the company itself, stakeholders and society. The need to be able to detect warning signals before the bankruptcy is an actuality and the need to at least bate the negative consequences which follows due to the business ceases is huge. Swedish auditors have, according to the law, an obligation to evaluate a company’s going concern status. They also have the obligation to do a listing in the audit report if the company has a lack of capital. The going concern warning is the auditors warning signal for stakeholders and the governments warning signal is the requirement of balance sheet for liquidation purposes when a company has a lack of capital. Previous studies in the field has focused on financial warning signals and the reasons why the auditors’ accuracy in issuing the going concern warnings varies. This study focuses on going concern warnings and the listing about balance sheet for liquidations purposes. The purpose of the study is to identify the existence of going concern warnings and to increase the insight into the non-financial bases behind a going concern warning. The method of the study is of a quantitative nature and examined the last three…

▼ Given the evolution of Cloud Computing in recent years, users and clients adopting Cloud Computing for both personal and business needs have increased at an unprecedented scale. This has naturally led to the increased deployments and implementations of Cloud datacentres across the globe. As a consequence of this increasing adoption of Cloud Computing, Cloud datacentres are witnessed to be massive energy consumers and environmental polluters. Whilst the energy implications of Cloud datacentres are being addressed from various research perspectives, predicting the future trend and behaviours of workloads at the datacentres thereby reducing the active server resources is one particular dimension of green computing gaining the interests of researchers and Cloud providers. However, this includes various practical and analytical challenges imposed by the increased dynamism of Cloud systems. The behavioural characteristics of Cloud workloads and users are still not perfectly clear which restrains the reliability of the prediction accuracy of existing research works in this context. To this end, this thesis presents a comprehensive descriptive analytics of Cloud workload and user behaviours, uncovering the cause and energy related implications of Cloud Computing. Furthermore, the characteristics of Cloud workloads and users including latency levels, job heterogeneity, user dynamicity, straggling task behaviours, energy implications of stragglers, job execution and termination patterns and the inherent periodicity among Cloud workload and user behaviours have been empirically presented. Driven by descriptive analytics, a novel user behaviour forecasting framework has been developed, aimed at a tri-fold forecast of user behaviours including the session duration of users, anticipated number of submissions and the arrival trend of the incoming workloads. Furthermore, a novel resource optimisation framework has been proposed to avail the most optimum level of resources for executing jobs with reduced server energy expenditures and job terminations. This optimisation framework encompasses a resource estimation module to predict the anticipated resource consumption level for the arrived jobs and a classification module to classify tasks based on their resource intensiveness. Both the proposed frameworks have been verified theoretically and tested experimentally based on Google Cloud trace logs. Experimental analysis demonstrates the effectiveness of the proposed framework in terms of the achieved reliability of the forecast results and in reducing the server energy expenditures spent towards executing jobs at the datacentres.

▼ The purpose of this multiple case, qualitative study was to understand the perspectives of the implementation of universal free meal programs (UFM) for participants at two elementary schools in southern West Virginia. The theory guiding this study was Maslow’s hierarchy of needs as it describes the need for students to have their basic needs fulfilled before they begin progressing through other levels of the hierarchy. This study will address the central question of: 1) How do participants describe the process of implementing the CEP (Community Eligibility Provision) at the elementary school level? Guiding questions were used to investigate the requirements of the CEP, any related benefits or challenges, and how the CEP has influenced school culture. Data was collected through the administration of an open-ended questionnaire protocol via in-person interviews, written questionnaires, observations, and an exploration of related documents. Data analysis will then be conducted holistically through repeated readings and coding procedures.

▼ I examine, separately, the impact of three education programs on student achievement, using difference-in-differences and difference-in-difference-in-differences designs. First, I examine whether spillover benefits on achievement exist from preschool. I estimate the effect of exposure to a South Carolina preschool program that targets disadvantaged four-year-olds on students’ test scores in grades 3 through 5, where exposure means residing in a school district once the program was made available and disadvantaged students are those eligible for free or reduced-price lunch or Medicaid. I find that exposure to the preschool program not only increases the math and reading scores of targeted students, but also has positive effects on the math and reading scores of non-targeted students, those not able to participate in the program. Additional analysis suggests that these spillover effects may stem, in whole or in part, from improvements to classroom decorum via fewer behavioral disruptions. Second, my coauthors and I analyze the effect of Community Eligibility
Provision, a universal free-lunch program, on middle and elementary school students’ academic performance and attendance in the state of South Carolina. We show that this program leads to about 0.06 of a standard deviation increase in math test scores for elementary school students. We find smaller, but statistically insignificant effects on reading scores. We find no significant effect on middle school students’ test scores. The effects are most substantial for students that were previously eligible for free lunches, but not on other public assistance programs. We also find a larger effect on math scores in rural areas than in urban areas. Third, I examine whether
financial aid impacts achievement differently for low- and high-income students. I find that student aid increases the GPAs and graduation prospects of low-income students but has little impact on high- income students. Additional analysis suggests that reduction in student part-time work among low-income students may be a potential mechanism for the heterogeneous achievement effects of grant aid by income. These results suggest that merit aid programs could be targeted more effectively than most currently are. Together, the studies demonstrate the effectiveness of education programs in influencing human capital accumulation and reducing socioeconomic disparities.

▼ Financial well-being is likely a factor in many individual’s utility function.
Financial wellness can be measured using objective measures as well as subjective perceptions. In the first two essays, objective measures are compared to subjective perceptions to see if there is a relationship between the two. Three
financial ratios, including the liquidity ratio, the debt-to-asset ratio, and the investment ratio, are used as objective measures of
financial wellness. Subjective perceptions are measured by a question that asks respondents how satisfied they are with their
financial condition. The first essay analyzes at older Americans using the Health and Retirement Study. The second essay analyzes early-to-mid-career Americans using the Panel Study of Income Dynamics. The findings in this analysis suggest that there is a statistically and economically significant relationship between the investment ratio and individuals perceptions of
financial satisfaction, particularly for older individuals.
Financial ratios only play a small but important role in the overall
financial situation.
The goal of the third study is to analyze the relationship between objective measures of
financial knowledge and individuals’ perceptions of their own
financial knowledge. In addition, this paper looks at how perceptions of
financial knowledge change over time. The focus of this paper is emerging adults who attend college and then transition into careers after college. The data for this study are from the Arizona Pathways to Life Success for University Students (APLUS) survey. The findings of this research suggest a positive correlation between objective measures and perceptions of
financial wellness. College seniors in this study have a higher probability of perceiving themselves as financially knowledgeable compared to when they were in their first year of college. However, these same college seniors perceive themselves as more financially literate then they do 2 and 5 years after college. This study highlights the importance of
financial education during college. It also shows that individuals are likely to perceive themselves as more financially literate than they are.

▼ In a 2016 comment letter, the SEC summarizes the ongoing debate regarding the
usefulness of market risk disclosures and calls for additional discussion (SEC Concept
Release 2016). In response to the SEC’s call, I investigate whether investors and firms
benefit from market risk disclosures. Prior literature suggests that informative corporate
disclosure is associated with improved liquidity and investment efficiency. I find that
informative textual contents of market risk disclosures improve investors’ information
environment, and as a result, are associated with higher liquidity level, lower liquidity
uncertainty, and improved investment efficiency. My study is relevant to the ongoing
debate regarding the usefulness of market risk disclosures, calls for more detailed
regulatory guidance for market risk disclosures, and contributes to the literature on
liquidity, investment efficiency, and risk factor disclosures.

This study examines the effect of place on recovery, care, and empowerment models of trauma rehabilitation for female survivors of the commercial sex trade and human trafficking in two residential facilities in India: one in rural Bihar and one in urban Mumbai. It focuses on the ideological, socio-cultural, and physical aspects of landscape that drive differences between rural and urban rehabilitation practices and opportunities for growth and learning. These differences affect survivors’ development of place attachment, self-identity, and hope for the future. The case studies are contextualized within the broader scope of gendered political economy in India to discuss the ways political economy mediates gendered trauma care and informs the ability of survivors living in the margins to re-imagine their futures. Through a place-based analysis of marginalization, prejudice, and stigma, I also discuss the ways sense of place and trauma impact identity development and place-based empowerment models.

▼ Manual wheelchair users rely heavily on upper body
force generation for propulsion, and as a result, they are
susceptible to upper extremity injuries. These injuries are often
related to propulsion techniques and individual wheelchair
configuration. In order to better understand how propulsion metrics
such as stroke frequency, stroke length and push force relate to
biomechanical injury, it is necessary to monitor this data on a
device for an extended period of time. A clinically available
device known as the SmartWheel can be used to generate a report
that summarizes these metrics. However, this device has a number of
limitations that prevent its use in longer term studies conducted
in everyday use outside of the clinic. The SmartWheel is a
standalone wheel, that is substituted for standard, original
equipment wheelchair wheels, which includes a range of different
sensors. However, this device is relatively expensive, requires
significant and time-consuming modifications to the wheelchair in
order to be used, and is suitable only for in-clinic use. We have
developed a novel device, called the SmartHub, which is a low cost,
unobtrusive activity monitor designed to collect and store or
transmit wheelchair propulsion data. This device is approximately
the size of a hockey puck, and consists of a WIFI-enabled
microprocessor, nine-axis inertial measurement unit, rechargeable
battery that can be easily attached to any diameter manual
wheelchair wheel. The device collects a wide range of propulsion
characteristics in real-time, which can be utilized to produce the
