▼ The natural history filmmaking genre is the primary strand of documentary cinema that features narratives about wildlife, the environment, and nature issues. However, the genre has adopted storytelling and filmmaking conventions that express anthropocentrism, a hierarchical worldview that values human rationality and morality as superior to nonhuman nature. Natural history films tend to either negatively anthropomorphize animals by projecting uniquely human emotions or morals onto them (anthropomorphic error) as a way to increase view identification, or avoid anthropomorphism altogether in favor of objective human-perspective narration that depicts nonhuman nature as mechanistic and void of any creative, intentional, or active experience. In this paper I argue how imaginative embodiment, or anthropomorphizing a nonhuman with an informed and expressed attentiveness to their biology and sensory capacities, can be a useful strategy that gives agency to animals in film while committing minimal anthropomorphic error. I use the films, GREEN (2011), Bear 71 (2012), and my thesis film SUN BEAR (2015) as case studies to explore how cinematic language and voiceover narration imaginative embodiment strategies can be crafted in ways that express the point of view, intentionality, and agency of nonhuman others in an ethical manner. Imaginatively embodying an animal through cinematic language and voiceover narration allows viewers to ethically consider the moral status of a nonhuman other without having to negatively anthropomorphize them, describe them as being human like, or lose their agency and intentional stance in objectifying scientific language. An ethically important aspect of using imaginative embodiment to tell stories of the natural world is that it supports an environmental ethic that appreciates the vast entanglement of agentive life forces and helps to abolish repressive human-animal or culture-nature binaries in favor of an environmental ethic expressive of biocentric sensibilities. As the natural history genre of documentary filmmaking continues its evolution as the major media outlet representing, educating, and telling stories about nature, wildlife, and environmental issues, imaginative embodiment can be a useful tool for incorporating agentive first-person nonhuman experiences in non-fiction cinema. ▼ Recent studies have indicated that nickel gallium alloys can be effective for the catalytic hydrogenation of CO2 to methanol. To simplify the characterization of NiGa catalysts, we are developing model systems using NiGa thin films. We prepared NiGa thin films by RF magnetron sputtering using an equiatomic alloy target, followed by annealing in ultrahigh vacuum. The resulting films were characterized by atomic force microscopy (AFM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). AFM data showed that the film roughness and the grain size increased significantly as the film was annealed above 700 °C. The XRD patterns indicated that Ni-Ga thin films were nanocrystalline as deposited and then converted to the Ni13Ga9 phase after annealing above 500 °C. XPS was used to determine chemical and thermal stabilities by monitoring changes in Ni 2p, Ga 2p, and O 1s spectra. It was found that surface segregation of gallium and oxygen occurred after annealing up to 600 °C, resulting in the formation of a Ga2O3 layer on the NiGa surface. For anneals above 600 °C, the Ga2O3 XPS signal was reduced in intensity due to desorption of Ga2O3 from the NiGa surface. The ability to control the size and shape of porous materials is of considerable interest, where controllably modulating pore size may allow trapping and releasing molecules in the pores. MIL-53(Al) is a flexible metal organic framework (MOF) material with large breathing effect, which may be useful for these applications. In this study, MIL-53(Al) was successfully synthesized by a microwave reactor. To grow thin film MIL-53(Al), a Au surface was treated with an organic self-assembled monolayer (SAM). Isolated MIL-53(Al) particles were formed on the SAM-functionalized Au substrate by using the mother solution from the MW-assisted growth of MIL-53(Al). ▼ South Africa occupies a unique space in terms of the decolonization of the continent of Africa. While massive projects of decolonization where happening across the continent, South Africa was subjected to a conservative and racialised project of segregation. This arrested development makes for an interesting anachronism in South Africa as disconcerting “ThirdWorld” and “First-World” economies emerged creating an anomalous temporality. I was born just a month before the inimitable Ruth First was unceremoniously assassinated in Mozambique in 1982. While further South, one of the most underreported conflicts of apartheid South Africa was in its nascent stages no further than a kilometer away from my house. I am referring of course to the violent clashes between factions of both the Inkatha Freedom Party (IFP) and the African National Congress (ANC), played in the men’s hostel of the third largest township in the country, Umlazi, South of Durban. These would only come to have meaning to me later, when I was at university. I mention these cultural and perhaps socio-political artefacts in so far as they relate to the kind of environment that lead to this research enquiry. Which is to say that as social beings, we are in fact products of the things that affect the social environment that we exist in. This is not a new idea. What is particularly interesting for this enquiry is the eclecticism of the emblems that survive to shapes one’s own identity and perception of the world around them. Within the above stated mini-biography lies a complex matrix of emotions and extrapolated meanings mediated through a conflicted and negotiated understanding of what the social history of South Africa meant for my own personal history. This paper is an attempt to think through articulations of time as they are constituted by future-orientated subjectivities extending back to varied pasts. It does so by exploring a recent work of black South African self-writing, Jacob Dlamini’s Native Nostalgia (2009). Considering the text’s treatment of time, I argue that porous conceptions of temporality open up possibilities for self-enunciation. What Paul Gilroy has described as “the signs of sameness” (2000, 101). Meaning that these could be quantified and as such researchable and in fact applied across various cultural texts (including but not limited to film). The body of work from South African documentary filmmaker Rehad Desai provides an interesting case study to examine Jacob Dlamini’s thematic pre-occupations with nostalgia. Nostalgia here is used to see if such pre-occupations can be applied to a filmic body of work. Desai’s body of work is interesting to this enquiry because it almost exclusively deals with the temporalities of South Africa as “refracted through the prism of the past”. Dans cette étude, nous avons préparé deux matériaux composites conducteurs par le procédé d’électropolymérisation. Lebut de la première partie de la thèse était l’élaboration de films composites polyaniline /LiMn2O4 pour leur applicationcomme matériau de cathode dans les batteries lithium-ion. Les analyses par diffraction des rayons X, analyse EDX etspectrométrie IRTF ont confirmé l'incorporation de LiMn2O4 dans les films composites. Les analyses électrochimiquesdes films obtenus ont mis en évidence une conductivité plus élevée des films composites comparée à la conductivité desfilms de PANI. La deuxième partie a été consacrée à la préparation de l’oxyde de graphène (OG) à partir de graphiteselon 2 méthodes de synthèse dérivées de la méthode de Hummers. Les résultats obtenus ont montré que le de gréd’oxydation des feuillets n’était pas le seul critère à prendre en compte pour évaluer la stabilité du OG dans l’eau. Lesfeuillets d’OG obtenus ont été incorporés à la polyaniline par électropolymérisation d’une suspension d’OG et d’anilineen milieu neutre. Le milieu électrolytique neutre conduit à des chaînes oligomères de PANI de faible masse molaire avecune proportion significative d’unités aromatiques mono et 1,2-disubstituées dans la structure finale. Différents substratsmétalliques ont été testés et les films ont été en particulier déposés sur fer afin d’évaluer leur protection anticorrosion.

In this study, we prepared two conductive composite materials based on polyaniline (PANI) byelectrodeposition. First, we investigated the development of new polyaniline/LiMn2O4 composite films forapplication as cathode material in lithium-ion batteries. Analysis by X-ray diffraction, EDS analysis and FTIRspectroscopy confirmed the incorporation of LiMn2O4 in composite films. The electrochemical analysis of thefilms obtained showed a higher conductivity of the composite films compared to the conductivity of the filmsof PANI. The second part was devoted to the preparation of oxidized graphene (GO) from graphite by 2methods of synthesis derived from the method of Hummers. The results showed that the degree of oxidation ofthe graphene sheets was not the only criterion in assessing the stability of GO in water. Electropolymerizationof aniline in a neutral electrolyte containing GO sheets was carried out to prepare PANI-GO composite films.The neutral electrolytic medium leads to PANI oligomer chains of low molecular weight with a significantproportion of aromatic mono units and 1,2-di-substituted units in the final structure. The electrodeposition wasperformed on inert and oxidizable metals. The corrosion protection efficiency of PANI/GO composite filmswas studied in HCl corrosion medium.

▼ This work aims to make progress in understanding the relationship between nonuniform microstructures in Ni/Al reactive systems and reactive properties. To this end, alternating Ni and Al sheets were cold-rolled into fully dense structures and had their reactivity tuned by further cutting, stacking and rerolling. In addition, some of the resulting foils were mechanically ground into mechanically processed composite powders. The cold-rolled microstructure was extensively characterized via scanning-electron microscopy (SEM) and a ‘home-built’ MATLAB code that determined the bilayer spacing and the local Ni atomic fraction associated with each bilayer. Differential scanning calorimetry, gas pycnometry density analysis and self-propagating reaction velocity/maximum temperature determination were performed on all of the foil types. The reaction velocity and maximum temperature were found to vary with processing conditions rather than the volume average bilayer thickness, with foils that had more gradual rolling passes having a hotter and faster reaction compared to foils with more severe plastic deformation during rolling. The detailed microstructural information gathered from SEM images was used to simulate diffusion during self-propagating reaction to predict the maximum temperature. While there is a lot of variation between SEM images, we found that the distribution of bilayer thicknesses and local chemistries in the foils with gradual rolling passes have a more uniform bilayer thickness distribution, which promotes more complete reaction on the time scale of the self-propagating front and therefore a higher maximum temperature. The source for the variation in propagation velocity is currently unknown. An analogous set of rolled foils were fabricated to investigate the propagation mechanism using high-speed cameras. However, their propagation velocities vary with bilayer, but the mechanism of propagation is similar to a previously reported one in the Al/Co system. Furthermore, the measured maximum temperatures are constant. The net velocities of the foils are shown to vary inversely with the volume average bilayer thickness, as well the local propagation rate perpendicular to that direction, which agrees with previously reported results. The mechanically fabricated powders show variation in both physical density and DSC behavior as a function of both original foil microstructure and particle size. As the particle size is decreased, the DSC heat release decreases as Al melting and mixing becomes more prevalent, with the strongest decreases seen in particles with the coarsest microstructure. The evolved heats are also plotted as a function of the average number of bilayers in each particle and the result is that they all fall on one curve. This is an important parameter to bear in mind when using these powders for commercial applications. Furthermore, of the three particle types fabricated, one becomes Ni-rich at the smallest particle sizes; one becomes Al-rich while one shows little variation. The physical properties of pure and doped zinc oxide (ZnO) films grown by sol-gel spin coating technique are studied in detail. The optimizations of annealing temperature and number of layers of undoped ZnO film growth are initially undertaken. Structural properties are characterized by XRD, FESEM and EDAX or XPS. Optical properties through UV-Vis-NIR, Photoluminescence and Magnetic properties by vibrating sample magnetometer are studied. The XRD patterns show that ZnO films are polycrystalline in nature and crystallite size varies from 10 to 46 nm. Lattice constants a and c are calculated and they are in good agreement with the standard result. SEM images of pure and doped ZnO are well defined and depict the hexagonal structure. The grain size of the ZnO nanoparticles decreases with doping. The chemical compositions of all the ZnO nanocrystalline films are determined by the typical EDAX and XPS. Quantitative analysis was carried out using the XPS to find the stoichiometry of ZnO films. Observation of Zn 2p3/2 and O 1s peaks confirm the presence of these elements in the ZnO film studied here. The absorption coefficient and energy band-gap are determined from the UV-Vis transmission measurement. The band-gap of manganese doped zinc oxide is observed with largest deviation from pure ZnO which varies from 2.55 to 2.72 eV. Photoluminescence measurements are used to evaluate the optical and crystalline quality of the undoped and doped ZnO thin films. Strong near band edge (NBE) emission dominates for all samples in the PL spectra taken at room temperature. Undoped and Al, Cd, Ce and Er doped ZnO shows NBE around 383 nm but TM (Mn, Co, Ni) doped ZnO films exhibit NBE around 415 nm. The bare and doped ZnO films prepared are examined for magnetization studies at room temperature in the range of the magnetic field 0 17.5 kOe. Non ferromagnetism for pure and ferromagnetism for doped ZnO films are observed.

▼ This dissertation describes the development of a novel technique for complex pattern formation and shape control in carbon and graphite films which has significant importance on the properties of carbon based materials for variety of applications. Carbons are quite resistant to solvents, acids, and bases and thus cannot easily be patterned by conventional techniques. The main difficulty in current patterning technology is inability to produce large amounts of identical carbon nanostructures and precision is not possible with combination of existing lithographic and chemical methods. This thesis demonstrates the use of catalytic combustion as a new and flexible approach to selectively etch carbon materials and focuses on controlling the etching direction by using magnetically steered catalyst particles. Catalytic combustion provides a way of using oxygen as a dry etchant by acting selectively on catalyst particles positioned by controlled metal deposition. Liquid phase catalyst deposition and carbon thin films as a model material and reaction system were used for the demonstration of this new concept. A polydimethylsiloxane stamping technique was used to transfer metal chloride solutions onto carbon thin films in the form of ordered droplet microarrays that dry to produce catalytic micropatches. The results showed that under the correct drying and reaction conditions, it is possible to convert these microdroplet arrays into well-defined micropatterned carbon films by controlled catalytic combustion. Catalyst selection, drying behavior, etchant selectivity ratio and effect of carbon substrate on the fidelity of combustion pattern were discussed. In addition, behavior of magnetic catalyst particles on the surface of natural graphite during carbon oxidation reaction has been investigated and it has been proved that an external magnetic field could influence the mode of catalytic attack significantly. Ability to create complex, preset patterns in multi-layer graphene by catalytic channeling in the presence of external magnetic fields has been demonstrated. Graphene films were obtained from natural single graphite crystals by mechanical exfoliation. A custom resistive heat treatment device was developed to allow close proximity access for high temperature resistant powerful magnets. The mode of etching along the basal plane of graphene layers was explicitly controlled by active steering of magnetic particles and this technique has been successfully applied to create directional etched channels and predetermined complex patterns in graphene. ▼ Piezoelectric materials convert mechanical strain into a dielectric displacement, as well as the converse, allowing these materials to be used as sensors, actuators, and transducers. Currently, lead zirconate titanate (PZT) is the primary material used in these applications. Due to environmental toxicity and safety concerns associated with Pb, development of alternative materials is necessary. Bi-based systems are an attractive area of research in both bulk ceramic and thin film embodiments. Although progress in developing bismuth sodium titanate (BNT)-based solid solutions has been impressive, the combination of cation volatility and high processing temperatures for both bulk ceramic and thin film fabrication can lead to changes in stoichiometry and create defects within the system which can significantly impact material properties. One of the main sources of defects is often presumed to be related to cation volatility. As such, the diffusion behavior of volatile cations within BNT-bismuth potassium titanate (BKT)-based thin films was studied using transmission electron microscopy, electron energy loss spectroscopy, and energy dispersive x-ray spectroscopy. Both 𝘪𝘯-𝘴𝘪𝘵𝘶 and 𝘦𝘹-𝘴𝘪𝘵𝘶 experiments were performed where the objectives were to: (1) observe crystallization processes in a single layer film, and (2) map the locations of Bi, Na, and K throughout the thin film, bottom electrode, and substrate cross-section. Results indicated that Bi, Na, and K had all diffused into the Pt bottom electrode, and in some cases the underlying buffer layers. In addition to the aforementioned volatilization into atmosphere, this diffusion could also impact film stoichiometry and material properties and should be accounted for. Multi-layer BNT-BKT-bismuth zinc titanate (BZnT) thin films were fabricated via chemical solution deposition. X-ray diffraction and atomic force microscopy were used to study structure and morphology changes with processing parameters. The dielectric, ferroelectric,and piezoelectric properties were characterized and values of the effective out-of-plane piezoelectric coefficient, d₃₃,f, were extracted from double beam laser interferometry measurements. Dielectric constants and loss ranged from 380-800 and 2-8% respectively as a function of thin film composition. For 0.8 mm diameter top electrodes, the maximum value measured for effective d₃₃,f was approximately 80 pm/V. Lastly, electrical fatigue measurements showed that while the effective d₃₃,f was larger for compositions closer to the BNT-BKT morphotropic phase boundary (MPB), those further away were able to withstand a higher number of cycles, up to three orders of magnitude, at ± 400 kV/cm. ▼ Pb(Zr,Ti)O₃ (PZT) is a very attractive material for use in piezoelectric-based microelectromechanical systems (MEMS) due to its high piezoelectric coefficients and ability for large displacements with relatively low applied fields (as compared to electrostatic-based MEMS). The piezoelectric effect is strongly anisotropic, thus it is very desirable to control the crystallographic orientation of the active material. This study is designed to understand the effect of crystallographic texture on the long-term stability of piezoelectric-based MEMS devices. Utilizing (100)-oriented solution deposited LaNiO₃ (LNO) and PbTiO₃ (PT) seed layers, (001) fiber texture of rfmagnetron sputtered PZT films (ex situ annealed) with varying thickness was optimized. X-ray diffraction rocking curve data indicated good out-of-plane alignment, with full-width-at-half-maximum (FWHM) values of 3.8° - 4.5° and 2.5°- 3.1° for PZT on LNO and PT, respectively. This optimization of (001) orientation is paramount to maximizing the piezoelectric response of PZT thin films for MEMS applications, as this promotes the highest piezoelectric response. Dielectric and ferroelectric properties were obtained for films 120-1320 nm thick. Subsequently these films were subjected to lifetime (fatigue) tests similar to what is experienced in piezo- MEMS applications. Fatigue endurance is a critical factor in evaluating long-term device reliability in these devices. A study of fatigue dependence on film thickness, morphology, bottom electrode, and field strength was conducted. Results of these studies show film morphology contributes strongly to film fatigue and film failure prior to reaching 10⁸ fatigue cycles, with increased grain size leading to improved fatigue endurance. Film thickness was also shown to contribute significantly to fatigue, predominantly in PZT on PT films, with films over 1 μm in thickness showing large fatigue after 10⁸ cycles. Films with bottom LNO electrodes demonstrated improved performance over all thickness ranges studied when compared to PT bottom electrodes, exhibiting minimal fatigue after 10⁸ cycles. ▼ Zinc Sulfide (ZnS) thin film, with a wide band gap, has been used for many applications, such as buffer layer for CIGS solar cells, light emitting diodes and thin film electroluminescent devices. In this work, ZnS thin films were prepared using two different deposition processes. In the first method, ZnS thin films were deposited by using conventional chemical bath deposition (CBD) process. Micro-reactor assisted solution deposition (MASD) with a flow cell was used as the second method. Growth kinetics of ZnS thin films in CBD was analyzed using in-situ quartz crystal microbalance measurements, and ex-situ transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) measurements. The results from the TEM and SEM measurements suggest that the film growth follows a two-step process with the formation of the nuclei in the solution first, attachment to the surface, followed by aggregation of nanoparticles into half spheres on the surface of the substrate and finally half spheres connect to the neighbor half spheres, thereby forming a continuous film. The mechanism study, verified by the SEM images, shows that nucleation starts very early in the CBD process. The degree of supersaturation influences the growth rate and final surface morphology. Temperature-dependent growth rate in the linear growth region follows the Arrhenius equation with an estimated value of activation energy (Ea) to be around 36 KJ/mol. This value, which is considered low (less than 40 kJ/mol), indicates that the rate limiting step is more likely to be a physical process such as adsorption or diffusion, rather than a chemical process, which tends to have higher activation energies. In our study, the chemical bath is vigorously stirred so that the rate-limiting step is likely controlled by a physically adsorption mechanism. The continuous flow micro reactor was used to deposit ZnS thin films using various flow cells of different designs. The depositions were carried out on display glass of 1 inch wide by 3 inches long. Both analytical equations (Hagen-Poiseuille) and computational fluid dynamics were applied to determine proper height for the flow channel. COMSOL Multiphysics simulation of fluid flow along with particle tracer was carried out to find an optimum cut out radius for further study. The film thickness growth kinetics and solute concentration near the substrate surface was simulated using the COMSOL Multiphysics program with an assumption of laminar flow, transport of diluted species and a simplified first order reaction. An insert that mimics a cut out radius of 2.31 inches was fabricated using a 3D printer and installed in the flow cell to deposit ZnS thin films. ZnS thin films deposited using the flow cells with and without the 3D printed insert were investigated. The results were analyzed using plane-view and cross-sectional SEM images.
