▼ BACKGROUND: Over the past several decades, specialized summer camps for children with cancer have been shown to have various positive results in those who attend.
Family camps have become increasingly popular over the past few years, but the efficacy of
family camps for specialized populations has not been well established through research. In addition, few studies have addressed the benefits of the camp experience over time, especially in regard to its impact on quality of
life. The aim of this study was to learn whether or not the
family camp experience increases the quality of
life of families with a child with cancer, and whether or not these changes are maintained after the camp experience ends. In addition, this study examined the impact of camp on levels of hope, and analyzed how hope and social support contribute to the quality of
life of those who attend camp.
SUBJECTS: A total of 66 families participated in this study. Participants include parents, cancer patients or survivors, and siblings. Thirty-nine families who attended a specialized weekend camp participated in the study, and a control sample of 27 families who did not attend camp was recruited as well.
METHOD: Questionnaire data was collected at three time points: pre-camp, post-camp, and a three-month follow up. Measures included a demographic questionnaire, age appropriate versions of the PedsQLTM 4.0 Generic Core Scales, the PedsQLTM 2.0 PedsQLTM 2.0
Family Impact Module, the Hope Scale (Adult and Child versions), the Young Children’s Hope Scale, and a brief follow-up questionnaire.
RESULTS: Quality of
life did not significantly increase in the camp group in the overall
family unit. However, quality of
life was shown to be significantly higher in the camp group than the control group at the beginning and end of camp. Siblings demonstrated a significant increase in quality of
life when examined separately from the
family unit. No significant changes in hope or differences in hope between groups were observed.
DISCUSSION: Though this study did not demonstrate the efficacy of
family camp as predicted, it did show that individual
family members are impacted by camp in different ways. Camp has been show to benefit siblings in particular, which is indicated by improvement in quality of
life, hope, and social support in this population. This study also shows that different results may be found using different measures of the same variables.

This qualitative investigation of intergenerational family estrangement commenced in 2007, with the main aim of exploring and understanding the lived experience of older people estranged from an adult-child or children. It sought to explore how people defined, explained, experienced, and made sense of estrangement from a family member in later life. A qualitative methodology grounded in the interpretive constructivist paradigm was employed. This approach required extended engagement, a flexible research design, and placed the person experiencing the phenomenon at the centre of the research. Data was collected from 25 participants who had been estranged. Two in-depth interviews were conducted with most participants, with some participants using diaries to record additional data. A researcher’s journal was used to record field notes and methodological decision-making. An interpretive phenomenological analysis was conducted. A systematic review of the literature revealed family estrangement was a conceptually complex and under-researched phenomenon. Yet, this study found that estrangement was not an uncommon experience in families, it was not always resolvable, and it potentially affected the entire intergenerational family system. Many participants experienced family estrangement as a significant and traumatic loss, a situation exacerbated by its ambiguous nature and social disenfranchisement. Various factors were found to be associated with the development of family estrangement including events which could have contributed to the adult-child’s perception of being rejected or devalued by the participant, multiple concurrent family stressors, and interference by a third party aimed at alienating the adult-child from their parent. This study makes significant contributions to the fields of social work, family studies, and ageing. It appears to be the first rigorous qualitative exploration of intergenerational family estrangement, and offers rich and detailed description of the estrangement experience. The research adds to knowledge about later-life intergenerational relationships, and gives voice to older people who have experienced family estrangement. As a preliminary study, this research provides a foundation for a longer-term research and policy agenda which focuses on family estrangement.

▼ Having a baby is a significant and life changing event for women and their families. History and culture have a tremendous impact on our modern day lives in many ways, several of which we are often unaware. The purpose of this study was to explore how women feel about their childbirth experiences and most significantly, how do they feel about themselves following their journey through the maternity culture in America. This study explored the hegemonic modern maternity culture and the ways in which this culture impacts the women who experience it. Eight women and four professional maternity care providers, as well as 5 women representing different decade cohorts, were interviewed. The voices of participants were privileged through the process, including analysis and presentation of findings. Specifically areas in which women reported being silenced or disenfranchised were highlighted. Findings were reported in two parts; first a narrative [re]telling of each of the twelve participant's stories was shared, followed by thematic representations of the data gleaned from participant experiences. Eight themes were constructed: (a) I'm a person, not a chart, (b) Risk and liability, (c) It takes a village (d) Who is in charge here? Power, control, and informed consent, (e) Asking questions and self-advocating, (g) Fear, (f) Power of perception and (h) Health reports. Findings are consistent with previous studies on maternity experience and also provide new evidence in understanding the deeply personal life-changing experiences of childbirth.

▼ A parenting self-assessment, based on the National Extension Parent Education Model (NEPEM), is a 160 item questionnaire designed to measure parents' self-efficacy in relation to six domains of critical parenting practices (i.e., Care for Self, Understand, Guide, Nurture, Motivate, and Advocate). This study explored the applicability of the self-assessment to parents in China. After multistage translation, a convenience sample of 18 Chinese parents living in China was invited to participate in the sample 1 study conducted online to evaluate the applicability of each question. Results of the sample 1 study suggested that 8 of 160 questions be eliminated due to lack of relevance to Chinese culture. The modified version of the self-assessment (152 questions) was distributed to Chinese parents in China through an online survey using SurveyGizmo. Chinese parents were informed of the study through a recruitment letter which was posted on Chinese parenting Web sites, and sent to kindergarten teachers and directors in the geographic areas that had less Internet coverage to reduce the sample bias. Fourteen Chinese parents responded to all the questions on the modified assessment. The two data sets (sample 1 and sample 2 self-assessments) were tested using chi-square analyses to ensure that there were no statistically significant differences between the two groups of individuals who completed the self-assessments. After determining that there were no significant differences between the two groups, data from both groups were combined to create a new data set representing responses from 32 parents. A reliability analysis of the 152 item self-assessment revealed the following Cronbach's Alphas for the 6 domains: Care for Self, 0.88; Understand, 0.86; Guide, 0.89; Nurture, 0.93; Motivate, 0.92; and Advocate, 0.84. In conclusion, based on a reliability analysis of 32 cases, this study suggests that the 152-item parenting self-assessment is culturally relevant for Chinese parents living in China.

▼ Due to the current high rates of divorce, many young adults have experienced the effects of parental divorce. Although a variety of research has investigated both the positive and negative implications of divorce for individuals, relatively little research has looked at the relationship effects of parental divorce. Yet divorce likely influences both parent-child relationships (especially with a non-custodial parent) and young adult romantic relationships. The purpose of this study was to explore more fully how parental divorce affects young adult relationships by investigating the relationship between divorce and parent-child relationship quality, perceived comfort within close relationships (i.e., attachment), romantic relationship satisfaction, and individual distress (depression, anxiety, and stress). Data analysis revealed that those who experience parental divorce are more likely to have lower parental regard, lower relationship satisfaction and they are 2.5 times more likely to experience relationship distress. It is hoped that the results of this study can help identify specific intervention points for clinicians who work with individuals, couples, and families where divorce has occurred.

provides normative definitions of key terms and an overview of the
thesis.Chapter One briefly examines the history and theology of the
Domestic Church before the Second Vatican Council from evidence in
the New Testament, by patristic writings about marriage, and in
magisterial teachings through the ages up to Vatican II.Chapter Two
has three sections covering the development of the theology of the
Domestic Church during and since the Second Vatican Council: two
significant developments during Vatican II that had profound
implications for
family life as the Domestic Church, the
ecclesiological insights that emerged out of the Council, and
subsequent papal ecclesiological development.Chapter Three
addresses the new ecclesiological directions for the Domestic
Church in three sections: the status of the expression “Domestic
Church,” the sacramentality of the Domestic Church, and the

life have interacted with one another in various ways throughout history. Recently, concerns about the demands of work interfering with
family life, and vice versa, have spurred research in the area of work-
family conflict. Though past research in this area has focused on mothers, changes in expectations associated with fatherhood have brought about interest in furthering understanding of how fathers might also experience conflict between work and
family life. One way in which men are increasingly choosing to approach this conflict is by leaving the work realm and choosing to become primary caregivers for their children. Though the number of men staying home with their children is increasing, stay-at-home fathers continue to encounter a lack of social support as a result of taking on a traditionally feminine role. As such, this study sought to understand the gender role attitudes, social support, and parental self-efficacy of stay-at-home fathers as well as how these variables may relate to their overall role satisfaction. Pearson’s r correlations and multiple regression analyses were conducted to test the hypotheses. Overall, results indicated that gender role attitudes, social support, and parental self-efficacy were significant predictors of overall role satisfaction for stay-at-home fathers. Implications for findings and directions for future research are discussed.

▼ Negativöverspridning från arbetsliv till privatliv och från privatliv till arbetslivuppkommer när beteenden, humör, stress eller känslor från den ena sfären på ettnegativt sätt påverkar den andra sfären. Denna uppsats har en kvalitativ ansatsoch undersökte lärares upplevelse av negativ överspridning mellan arbetsliv ochprivatliv och tvärtom. Respondenterna var 16 lärare inom grundskola ochgymnasieskola som förde dagbok kring negativ överspridning. De typer av negativöverspridning som nämndes oftast var 1) hög arbetsbelastning, 2) tankar ellerkänslor som stör, 3) trötthet, 4) problem med andra människor samt 5) problemmed maskiner. Resultatet visade att respondenterna rapporterade mer negativöverspridning mellan arbetsliv och privatliv än tvärtom. Respondenterna uppgavatt de arbetade mycket och att förtroendetiden oftast inte räckte till. Deflesta lärare som avböjde medverkan i studien gjorde detta på grund av överbelastningi arbetssituationen.
Negative spillover from work to family and vice versa often occurs when forinstance behaviour, mood, stress and feelings from one domain negatively affectthe other domain. This qualitative thesis investigated teachers perceptions ofnegative spillover from work to family and vice versa. The respondents were 16teachers in primary and secondary school which wrote a diary about negativespillover. The types of negative spillover that occured most frequently were 1)high workload, 2) disturbing thoughts or feelings, 3) fatigue, 4) problems withother human beings and 5) problems with machines. The results showed that therespondents reported more negative spillover from work to family, than fromfamily to work. Most of the respondents worked a lot and the time of trust werenot enough. The respondents who declined participation in the study did thisbecause of an overload in their work situation.

▼ The family domain has been inadequately included in general discussions of wellbeing and quality of life. The omission of family influences from these discussions is particularly unfortunate given that families are the primary institution in which individuals come to know themselves in relation to others and their environment. Adequate attention to family is all the more important when studying political conflict given the span of forces associated with political conflict that might tax families. This dissertation used data from a recent project designed to understand the nature of wellbeing/ quality of life among Palestinians, focusing particularly on the role of family. Interview data from 14 group interviews of 21-53 year old Palestinians conducted in 2010 were used (n=68; 5 individuals per group, minus two absentees; 33 males, 35 females). Analyses of the interview data were conducted using principles from a grounded theory approach. Findings revealed that although family was not described as the most important aspect of wellbeing, it featured prominently in conceptualizations of quality of life, both as affecting and being affected by wellbeing in other domains. From the women’s interviews, five themes of family life emerged. These values included connection among family members, the importance of autonomy and educational attainment for women and children, desires for the physical safety of one’s family, and the need for fathers to attain economic security. Similarly, the men also spoke of the importance of economic security to a man’s sense of self and issues of women’s autonomy. Some of the men also discussed the roles of respect and religious devotion. Though there were differences in the themes that emerged from the men’s and women’s interviews, both groups described how the political context creates barriers that prevent families from achieving wellbeing. The findings of this study point to the importance of including family relationships in discussions of wellbeing /quality or life, particularly for individuals who have experienced chronic political constraint such as Palestinians. One apparent value of such an endeavor is the discovery of how tightly family life is tied to other prevailing contexts in jointly determining quality of life.

life chances and choices play in determining quality of
life among homeless people. Given the prominent negative impact of homelessness, this paper specifically examines the impact of length of time homeless and location on adverse quality of
life. Data from Birmingham, Alabama and Northwest Arkansas Point-in-Time Homeless Census' was utilized and combined to create a sample of 264 homeless individuals. Using a quantitative approach, the topic of adverse quality of
life for the homeless is analyzed through a three-model OLS regression, using a
life chances and choices framework, with the addition of experiential context – time and place. Statistical analysis shows no significant impact of
life choices on quality of
life but a significant impact of
life chances such as strong social ties and mastery of fate, on adverse quality of
life. Length of time homeless yielded a significant impact on quality of
life, but location did not, indicating that the homeless experience with regards to subjective quality of
life did not vary between Birmingham and Northwest Arkansas.

▼ The recognition that employees and employers wield
different levels of power in the workplace makes labour legislation
a central part of the workplace. This is because the different
levels of power possessed by the two parties impact not only on
workplace decision making but also on the relationship between the
two parties, thus, being the weaker party (worker), the importance
of worker protection through legislation is very important.
However, the extent to which all employees enjoy legislation
protection has always been a bone of contention. The lack of
employment security in certain sectors of the labour market is not
always the direct consequence of a lack of labour legislation aimed
at those sectors. Rather, factors such as supervising compliance
and implementation of labour legislation are crucial towards
achieving important goals of labour legislation such as job
security and worker protection. This study attempts to understand
the interplay between the nature of work, legislation and the
impact on
family and community
life of taxi drivers, through
studying the everyday work experience of local taxi operators. This
study looks at the labour process of taxi driving in Mamelodi
Township (Pretoria, Gauteng Province) and Jane Furse (Sekhukhune
District, Limpopo Province). The study draws on post-Bravermanian
labour process theory, work-
life balance debates and labour
geography for theoretical frameworks. This is an ethnographic study
that mainly draws on the extended case method, supplemented with
semi-structured interviews. Results indicate that taxi drivers work
under harsh working conditions with very few employment-related
benefits and little time for their families (social
life). The
drudgery of labour and the nature of the labour process motivate
the need for taxi drivers to “make out”, as Michael Burawoy has
described worker coping strategies. This involves what is termed
binding, floating, sekero and rocky relations in this study.
Findings also point out that current legislative stipulations,
particularly the definition of a workplace, are incompatible with
the nature of work characteristic of the minibus taxi industry. The
study concludes that taxi drivers remain largely vulnerable and
unprotected due to this mismatch between legislative stipulations
and the nature of work in the industry. Related to the foregoing,
the study concludes that the informality of the minibus taxi
industry benefits to some degree both taxi drivers and taxi owners.
The study also points out the fact that geography/space is critical
to our understanding of certain industries and successful
application of labour regulation laws. Finally the study concludes
that different localities impact on the intensity and duration of
the labour process(es) therefore negates the successful uniform
application of labour laws.

largest killers, claiming 17.1 million lives a year. Several
epidemiological studies have shown the relationship between the
incidence of Coronary Heart Disease (CHD) and nutrition. The WHO
Expert Committee concluded that there is a well established
triangular relationship between habitual diet, blood cholesterol
level and CHD. A diet high in whole grains has been reported to
have health benefits, such as reduced risk of CVD. Dietary fats
play an important role in determining the levels of lipids in serum
and liver which are important risk factors responsible for CHD. A
large intake of fibre is associated with a lower relative risk of
death from coronary heart disease. Polyunsaturated fatty acids,
monounsaturated fatty acids and fibre diets have been recommended
to lower plasma cholesterol and triglycerides which is a major risk
factor for coronary heart disease. Hence, in the light of the above
facts, the work was carried out on standardization of cereal and
pseudo-cereal products inorder to study their effect on
hyperlipidemia in wistar rats. The results arrived, with respect to
the processing and preparation of selected cereals such as raw
brown rice, parboiled brown rice, Italian millet and samai are
dealt below. The selected cereal and pseudo-cereals milling yield,
moisture content, water holding capacity, effects of soaking on the
rate of equilibrium moisture content of cereals, chemical
characteristics of the cereals were studied. It was found that the
parboiled brown rice had higher milling yield of grain weight
(76.20 %), water holding capacity (58.20 %) and rate of equilibrium
moisture content (62.80 %) of cereals compared to other cereals
such as raw brown rice, Italian millet and samai. The Italian
millet had higher percentage of protein (10.05 %), fat (5.20 %),
crude fiber (7.89 %) and low total carbohydrate (65.23 %) content
compared to other cereals.

life balance (WLB) by manufacturing firms in Lagos Metropolis, Nigeria is still a major challenge. Most manufacturing companies have put in place various work-
life balance strategies (WLBS) such as parental leave, employees’ health and wellness programmes (EHWP), dependant care, personal development and flexible work arrangement to overcome this challenge. However, the efficacy of these WLBS at helping employees to address work and
family stressors are still in doubt. Exploring the mediating influences of WLB satisfaction and WLBS on the link between work-
family stressors and organisational performance could contribute to the body of literature in human resource management. Given the preceding, developing a conceptual framework to measure the effectiveness of WLBS in the selected manufacturing firms is of utmost importance to human resource management practice.
This study employed explanatory sequential mixed methods research design in providing the required explanations of the mediating influences of WLBS and work-
family satisfaction on the link between work-
family stressors and organisational performance. A simple random sampling technique was adopted to select respondents for quantitative data ollection. A self-reported questionnaire was used as the main research instrument for this study. A total of 350 structured questionnaires were administered, while 315 questionnaires were returned from which three were not properly completed and were discarded. The remaining 312 which constituted an 89% response rate were coded and analysed for this study. Subsequently, six members of the management staff were purposively selected to participate in interviews for qualitative data. Five hypotheses which align with the research questions and objectives were formulated and tested using multiple regression and Structural Equation Modeling (SEM). Qualitative data was analysed utilising NVivo 11. The result of the statistical analysis revealed that there was no relationship between WLBS and employees’ job performance in the selected manufacturing firms. This implies that, the WLBS in place at the selected firms did not impact on job performance. The results also showed that there was no direct link between work-
family stressors and the selected manufacturing firms’ performance. Rather, work-
family stressors exert indirect influence on the selected manufacturing firms’ performance through WLBS and work-
family satisfaction, indicating full mediation. The managerial implication of this study was drawn from the mediation analysis which illustrated that WLBS and work-
family satisfaction mediate the relationship between work-
family stressors and manufacturing firms’ performance. It is recommended that the manufacturing firms HR operate an inclusive policy in the redesigning of the WLBS by getting the employees involve in the redesign process.

▼ ENGLISH ABSTRACT: This dissertation is a literary study with a qualitative component, provoked by
family 'crises' and escalating single parenting, predominantly by mothers in default
family structures beset by many childcare issues. It investigates- through tacit elimination of weak paradigms, a developmental mindset, empirical research and biblical consultation- a holistic
family paradigm best suited for individual human development in care consciousness in society. The study assumes that, at grassroots levels of society, monogamy, faithfully practiced by morally responsible, natural, parental agencies, is ideal for holistic child care and is suitable for human development. It can also serve as a pre-emptive strategy against the following: delinquency, father absence, abuse, neglect, divorce, separation, indifference,
family disintegration, relational poverty, pathological disorders, feminized poverty calling for government intervention, and general societal unrest. However, the monogamous
family set up of the nuclear
family variety requires relational adjustment.
Through studies in ethics and theology, 'care' emerged as a fundamental concept of what it means to be human and is a potential entry point to relational conflicts and lack of development sustainability. Care can spread through inclusion, affirmation, participation and empowerment of the formerly marginalized sectors. Perlas‘ social three-folding strategy, engages the power of politics and economics to care for civil society‘s needs in tripartite partnerships. Similarly,
family three-folding units can be effective, at grass root levels, in bringing about holistic child care. Appropriate interpretation, contextual and responsible application of biblical principles for
family life from both the OT and NT is part of the interdisciplinary research process. Ephesians 5:21- 6:4; Genesis 1:27-28, 2:24; Deuteronomy 6:6-9 and other appropriate texts will be analyzed in this regard. Holistic child care should contribute significantly to improvement in quality of
family life leading to sustainable societies where human rights are respected and caring attitudes promoted globally.
The empirical research sought data triangulation, of outstanding
family and child care issues, through a phenomenological design that engaged mothers as the units of analysis. Variables were, among others, mothers‘ sentiments and perspectives of men, fathers and husbands. Samples of 10 single mothers, using a mixed sampling methodology and 10 married mothers (the focus group), were selected. In-depth interviews using standardized open-ended questions were utilized. The projective technique was effective in eliciting hidden, negative and bitter sentiments on gender issues requiring urgent attention. Work-overloaded mothers perceived men as self-centered pleasure seekers who are disinterested in child care. ▼ The recognition that employees and employers wield
different levels of power in the workplace makes labour legislation
a central part of the workplace. This is because the different
levels of power possessed by the two parties impact not only on
workplace decision making but also on the relationship between the
two parties, thus, being the weaker party (worker), the importance
of worker protection through legislation is very important.
However, the extent to which all employees enjoy legislation
protection has always been a bone of contention. The lack of
employment security in certain sectors of the labour market is not
always the direct consequence of a lack of labour legislation aimed
at those sectors. Rather, factors such as supervising compliance
and implementation of labour legislation are crucial towards
achieving important goals of labour legislation such as job
security and worker protection. This study attempts to understand
the interplay between the nature of work, legislation and the
impact on
family and community
life of taxi drivers, through
studying the everyday work experience of local taxi operators. This
study looks at the labour process of taxi driving in Mamelodi
Township (Pretoria, Gauteng Province) and Jane Furse (Sekhukhune
District, Limpopo Province). The study draws on post-Bravermanian
labour process theory, work-
life balance debates and labour
geography for theoretical frameworks. This is an ethnographic study
that mainly draws on the extended case method, supplemented with
semi-structured interviews. Results indicate that taxi drivers work
under harsh working conditions with very few employment-related
benefits and little time for their families (social
life). The
drudgery of labour and the nature of the labour process motivate
the need for taxi drivers to “make out”, as Michael Burawoy has
described worker coping strategies. This involves what is termed
binding, floating, sekero and rocky relations in this study.
Findings also point out that current legislative stipulations,
particularly the definition of a workplace, are incompatible with
the nature of work characteristic of the minibus taxi industry. The
study concludes that taxi drivers remain largely vulnerable and
unprotected due to this mismatch between legislative stipulations
and the nature of work in the industry. Related to the foregoing,
the study concludes that the informality of the minibus taxi
industry benefits to some degree both taxi drivers and taxi owners.
The study also points out the fact that geography/space is critical
to our understanding of certain industries and successful
application of labour regulation laws. Finally the study concludes
that different localities impact on the intensity and duration of
the labour process(es) therefore negates the successful uniform
application of labour laws.

▼ The main objective of this study was to identify
family life
competencies needed by high school graduates, as perceived by a
majority of respondents. In addition, the null hypothesis tested was:
that age, sex, and educational level are each independent of response
on each individual competency statement. Testing was done at the
5% level of significance.
The questionnaire was developed through a synthesis of goals
stated in twelve
family life curriculum guides published since 1965.
A working draft of the questionnaire was developmentally tested with
three high school seniors and three mothers of teenagers. The
survey instrument included provisions for indicating personal data,
and offered four categories of "Essential", "Necessary", "Permissible",
and "Unimportant", for participants to respond to nine
family
life topics and seventy competency statements.
The population included those couples and individuals voluntarily
attending county public health prenatal classes in western
Oregon. Data were collected from all five counties with an on-going
program. One hundred forty-seven usable questionnaires were
obtained. Four instruments were disregarded because of incomplete
personal data.
Participants in the study ranged from 16 to 45 years of age
with a mean age of 25, and with 46.94 percent of the people in the 25
to 29 age group. Males numbered 56 (38. 10 percent) in the participating
group, with 91 (61.90 percent) females. Grouped educational
levels revealed 27. 21 percent having more than 16 years of education
and the groups with 12 years and with 13-15 years of education each
being 26. 53 percent of the total sample.
Frequency counts and percentages of the total sample indicating
favorable responses, were computed and presented for each of the
9
family life topics and 70 competency statements. All 9
family life
topics and 64 of the 70 competency statements received a majority
(over 50 percent) of favorable responses.
Chi-square tests were computed on each item of the questionnaire
to test the null hypothesis that age, sex, and educational level
are each independent of response. The null hypothesis was rejected
for age, in seven instances. Most cases showed younger people
responding favorably more often than expected and older people responding less favorably more often than expected.
The null hypothesis was rejected for sex in four instances, with
males responding less favorably more often and females more favorably
more often than expected. The null hypothesis for educational
level was rejected in nine instances. More educated people tended
to respond less favorably more often and less educated people tended
to respond more favorably more often than expected.

family living curriculum in
Oregon secondary schools, as indicated in the opinions of the
respondents, are as follows:

▼ The purpose of the study was to investigate the effects of social
position and stage in the
family life cycle on the use of living and
family rooms in houses with and without a
family room.
Homes built from two floorplans were selected for the sample.
These two floorplans were similar in square footage and room layout
with the exception one plan included a
family room. The 76 addresses
of the population to be studied were obtained from Harman Homes.
The addresses of 34 Laura houses and 42 Judy houses were received,
The occupants living at these addresses were contacted to request an
interview. The families selected met the criterion that both the husband
and wife were presently living in the house.
Of the 76 occupants contacted, 61 – 27 Laura occupants and
34 Judy occupants – met the criteria and consented to be interviewed.
Of the 61 occupants interviewed, 37 occupants completed and returned
diary records, 15 Judy and 22 Laura interviewees,
Hollingshead's "Two Factor Index of Social Position" was used
to classify interviewees into low, middle, or high social position.
Interviewees were placed into one of these three stages of the
family
life cycle: beginning stage, expanding stage, or contracting stage.
Three types of room use were studied: (1) time use, (2) activity
use, and (3) activity time use. Time use was the actual amount of
time in minutes or hours the room was occupied in a 24 hour day.
Activity use was the number of activities pursued in the room regardless
of the number of people involved or amount of time spent in the
activity, The highest number of activities any one category could
have for one day was 24 or 144 for the six activity categories: interaction
activities, home operations, audio-visual activities, sleep/
rest/relaxation, job or school operations, and simultaneous multiple
activities. Activity time use was the number of man hours involved
in specific activity in a given room and was computed by multiplying
the number of people involved in activity by amount of time spent in
it.
Interview schedules and diary records were tabulated and
analyzed to describe the sample and report room use.
The living room in the house without a
family room was used an
average of 7.9 hours per day. However, in the house with the
family room, the living room was used an average of 4.6 hours per day and
the
family room was used 5. 9 hours per day. The combined use of
these two rooms averaged 10.5 hours. Of the 10.5 hours, 43 percent
was spent in the living room and 57 percent was spent in the
family
room. The living room in houses without a
family room was used an
average of 75 percent of the combined room use of living and
family
rooms in houses with a
family room. However, the living room in
houses without a
family room was used 42 percent more than the living
room was used and 25 percent more than the
family room was
used in houses with both living and
family rooms.

▼ The purpose of this study was to assess change in self concept,
marital role expectation, and behavioral understanding in high
school students enrolled in a
family life course.
The subjects were two groups of high school students from an
only senior high school in a school district. The experimental group
was made up of 25 boys and 28 girls enrolled in a one semester
family life course, and a control group made up of 25 boys and 28
girls enrolled in a modern problems course. The groups were
matched on sex, age, socioeconomic level, and grade point average.
Data from the subjects were collected in a one semester pretest
and posttest situation using the following instruments: the
Interpersonal Check List as a measure of self concept, Dunn
Marriage Role Expectation Inventory as a measure of marital role
expectancy, and the Film Test for Understanding Behavior as a
measure of behavioral understanding.
The analysis of covariance was used, with the pretest scores
serving as a covariant, to test the following hypotheses:
Hypothesis I: There are no differences in changes in self concept
for
family life education students and their controls.
Hypothesis II: There are no differences in marital role expectation
for
family life education students and their controls.
Hypothesis III: There are no differences in behavioral understanding
for
family life education students and their controls.
Each hypothesis was considered for an experimental-control
comparison, a male experimental-control comparison, and a female
experimental-control comparison.
The analysis of covariance provided information for testing
the null hypotheses as well as establishing whether or not differences
in the initial scoring patterns influenced the distribution of
difference scores of the experimental and control group.
Results of Hypothesis I indicated that the tests of significance
of difference for both the Dominance and Love dimensions of self
concept were not significant for either the experimental-control
comparison or the sex comparisons. The non-significant results
indicated the changes in self concept, recorded for any comparison of the experimental and control groups were not significantly different.
The null hypothesis was not rejected for any of the comparisons.
The test of Hypothesis II yielded significant results in each of
the three comparisons: total group, male, and female. One consistant
difference throughout these groups was with respect to the
subscale Incorrect on the DMREI. In each instance the scores of
the experimental subjects reflected a significant decrease on the
Incorrect subscale which indicated a decrease in authoritarian views
of marital roles after exposure to the
family life course. In addition,
the females in the experimental group showed a significant difference
in change on Correct subscale which indicated an increase in the
equalitarian views.
Therefore, the null hypothesis was rejected for the total group
compassion and for the male group comparison for the subscale Incorrect.…

▼ The purpose of this paper was to study the relationship of a
high school
family life course to post high school problems and
marriage role expectations. The specific objective of the study was
to determine whether or not there is a relationship between participation
in a high school
family life course and perceived problems and
marriage role expectations.
The subjects were girls who had completed a high school
family
life course from two high schools, in a North-Central California
coast community, and their matched control group. The matching of
the control persons with the
family life students was done with regard
to age, ethnic group, marital status and high school grade point
average. A follow-up study was conducted, approximately two years
after graduation, by mailing the instruments to the subjects. Forty-three of the experimental group and 35 of the control group
responded. This represented forty-six percent of the total.
Null hypotheses were formulated regarding the personal problems
and the marriage role expectations of the two groups.
The Mooney Problem Check List (MPCL) was used to determine
the number and kinds of concerns of the subjects. The statements
were related to nine areas: health, personality, self-improvement,
economic security, home and
family, religion, courtship, sex
and occupation.
The Dunn Marriage Role Expectation Inventory (DMREI) was
used to determine whether the former
family life students had more
modern (equalitarian) marriage role expectations when compared
with the control group. This instrument consists of 71 statements
regarding expectations in the marriage roles and are related to
seven areas: authority, homemaking, child care, personal characteristics,
social participation, education, employment and support.
The analysis of variance was used to test for a significant
difference in the responses of the experimental and control groups
for both the MPCL and DMREI.
An F value of .007 in a comparison of marriage role expectations
of the two groups made it impossible to reject the null hypothesis
that there is no difference in marriage role expectations of
former
family life students and non
family life students. An F value of .360 in a comparison of the total number of
problems and F values below the level of significance in each of the
nine areas in the comparison of the experimental and control groups
made it impossible to reject the null hypothesis that there is no difference in the
life adjustment problems of the two groups.
Factors which may have effected the results of the study,
limitations of the study and suggestions for further research were
discussed.

▼ With a quarter of 16-24 year old Australians experiencing a mental health disorder and strong indicators that rates of these disorders are rising among young Australians, it is vital to address youth mental health and wellbeing. Family connectedness is known to be a key factor for youth wellbeing, but there is little detail about how young people experience it. Understanding the perspectives of young people is essential to help families connect and support the wellbeing of young people.
This thesis aims to fill this gap in the understanding of family connectedness by qualitatively exploring young people’s experiences. The study adopts a childhood studies lens to capture the perspectives of young people, which differ from adult viewpoints, and brings a social work perspective to this area of research. ▼ There has been a wealth of research aimed at developing an understanding of the way in which the experience of divorce impacts children. However, adult children of divorce have been widely underrepresented in this literature, much of which is outdated being at least ten years old. With shifting societal attitudes and the transformation of the
family system since the 1990's it is crucial that the research is updated in order to stay up on the way children and families are impacted in today's society. The purpose of this study was to hear directly from adults who experienced their parents' divorce in childhood in order to gain a deeper understanding of their experience and what the resulting impacts have been on their adult lives. Participants identified communication and support as the biggest factors contributing both positively and negatively to their adjustment. Their views of their parents, divorce, and relationships were directly tied to their perceptions of their experience with divorce and how well their parents were able to navigate it.

▼ Postmodern society is marked by a condition where traditional identity markers have degenerated in value. Without the spatial or temporal connection provided by traditional identity markers, individuals look to brands perceived to be authentic to aide in identity construction. Paradoxically, individualized identities need the interpretive support of other likeminded individuals in specialized communities to give legitimacy to constructed identities. These specialized communities often focus around a lifestyle or a brand. This research employed interpretive qualitative methodology to understand authenticity. Semistructured depth interviews were conducted with members of the Brit Iron Rebels Las Vegas Clan to understand the authenticity of Triumph Motorcycles within the context of their specialized community. Results of study found that the indexical connection provided by ownership of Triumph Motorcycles and participation in specialized communities provides traditional identity markers lacking in postmodern society. In practice, analysis of data revealed that a genuine interest on the part of brand managers who participate in specialized motorcycle communities must trump commercial intentions.

▼ The majority of grandparents in the United States are married and do not reside with their grandchild(ren) (U.S. Census Bureau, 2014; Wu, 2018). The
life stage of encore adulthood between 55 and 75 years old (Moen, 2016) often overlaps with grandparenthood. Time with grandchildren, and more broadly shared leisure time within couples during encore adulthood is minimally studied, this study provides insight to the process of
family leisure among grandparent couples. Guided by
life course and critical feminist perspectives, this qualitative inquiry examined the process of
family leisure among grandparent couples during the
life stage of encore adulthood (Daly, and Beaton, 2005; Moen, 2016). The results of this study, utilizing the method of constructivist grounded theory, present a theory grounded in lived experiences of 10 grandparent couples (Charmaz, 2014; Daly, 2007). The
family leisure experiences with grandchildren model is presented with three components:
life course dimensions, engaging in
family leisure, and relationships within the couple and with grandchildren.

▼ Both family and religion are important to a large majority of the population in the United States. In the last few decades, research on religious families has significantly increased. Empirical research on Jewish families, however, is scant. The purpose of this study is to explore contemporary American Jewish family life in relation to Judaism, both cultural and religious. Specifically, the two primary objectives of this study are 1) to examine how Jewish culture and religion may influence and shape Jewish family life; and 2) to examine how family relationships may influence observance of Jewish cultural or religious traditions. This reciprocal dynamic between family and Jewish culture and religion was examined by focusing on involvement in the Jewish community, the espousal of particular Jewish beliefs, and participation in certain Jewish practices, all in relation to the family. Qualitative in-depth interviews were conducted with thirty highly involved Orthodox, Conservative, Reform, and secular Jewish families from seven states. Grounded theory methods were employed to analyze the data. Five major themes that emerged from the data were presented: 1) Family Influences Jewish Community Involvement; 2) Community Involvement Influences Family Life, 3) Jewish Religious Beliefs and the Family, 4) Family Influences on Jewish Observance in the Home, and 5) Sabbath Observance in the Home. Implications for theory, research, and practice relating to both Jewish families and non-Jewish families in the United States are also discussed.
