▼ Alongside exponential rises in global prices for gold, there has been a concurrent rise in the geographical scope of the artisanal and small-scale mining (ASM) sector. This poverty-driven activity has been associated with elevated levels of environmental degradation, a high degree of informality, poor health and safety practices and below market prices for their gold. Despite these putatively conceived problems, there has been a historical and widespread failure by policy makers to significantly improve thesocio-economic and environmental conditions facing ASM’s operators. Recently, however, there has been a noticeable shift in the ways in which the governance of the sector is enacted. This thesis critically analyses the emergence of one such example, namely the Fairtrade Labelling Organistion and the Alliance for Responsible Mining’s dual launch of ‘Fairtrade’ and ‘Fairmined’ (FT/FM) certified gold. Inspired by the past successes for the movement in a range of agrifood products and grounded in the discourse of ‘fairness’, its application to ASM promises better prices in exchange for the fulfilment of standards relating to environmental stewardship,a commitment to democratic structures and responsible mining practices. Following the experiences of Fairtrade gold in nine pilot projects in Latin America, its expansion into gold producing countries in sub-Saharan African countries seems inevitable. However, there has been a lack of academic research into its efficacy, a gap that this thesis fills by examining the potential of both the discursive and material ways that Fairtrade and Fairmined gold may operate in Tanzania. It is revealed that ASM operators are negatively represented by conventional thinking as variously criminal, irresponsible and irrational. Against this background, it is argued that the intervention of FT/FM gold can be read through an environmental and social justice framework, one that presents a counter-narrative of ASM as a valued livelihood strategy marked by environmental responsibility. The struggles for greater recognition and more equitable distribution for ASM operators are premised, most critically on a movetowards a new, ‘fair’ way of mining. Building upon a critical examination of the politics of these discursiveconstructs, the thesis presents a critical examination of ‘fairness’ in practice through a case study. Indeed, a private company, African Precious Metals (APM), has constructed four ‘Fair Trade Gold Centres’ that offer ASM operators in the Mwanza and Shinyanga regions of Tanzania a new means of selling gold. Ideologically separate to the FT/FM model outlined above, their presence in local marketing arrangements for ASM gold has served to obscure the way that ‘fairness’ is conceptualised by ASM operators in the area. Syfte: Vår studie tar avstamp i det som tidigare forskning beskrivit som ett gap mellan konsumenters attityd och beteende till etisk konsumtion. Utifrån en efterfråga om ytterligare kartläggning och en upplevd avsaknad av studier som undersöker betydelsen av kunskap för betalningsvilja och konsumtion till fairtrade-produkter har vi därför formulerat följande syfte: "Syftet med studien är att få djupare förståelse för förhållandet mellan konsumenters kunskap om etisk märkning och deras konsumtion samt betalningsvilja för etiskt märkta-produkter." Metod: En enkätundersökning utfördes på Ica Maxi i Gävle där 143 slumpvis valda respondenter deltog. Respondenterna fick besvara frågor angående deras subjektiva ochobjektiva kunskap i avseende till fairtrade och därefter värdesätta priset för märkningen på tre utvalda produkter; banan, kaffe och honung. Utifrån detta kunde ett förhållande utläsas mellan kunskap och betalningsvilja. Resultat och slutsats: Resultatet av vår undersökning visar ett positiv samband mellan konsumentkunskap och betalningsvilja samt konsumtion. Objektiv kunskap hade en större positiv påverkan på respondenternas betalningsvilja för fairtrade-produkter medan subjektiv kunskap hade större påverkan på uppskattad konsumtion och inställning. Fortsättningsvis kunde vi utläsa en generellt förhöjd betalningsvilja för fairtrade på samtliga utvalda produkter. Förslag till vidare forskning: Vi har i denna studie inte mätt respondenternas faktiska betalningsvilja eller faktiska konsumtion. Vidare forskning skulle således kunna undersöka betydelsen av kunskap om etisk märkning för betalningsviljan i verkliga marknadssituationer. Uppsatsens bidrag: Denna studie pekar på vikten av konsumentkunskap för etisk konsumtion. Bidraget är förståelsen för rollen objektiv och subjektiv kunskap spelar för att få konsumenter att inkludera etiskt märkta produkter i deras konsumentval samt vara villiga att betala det pris premium som vanligtvis föreligger på fairtrade-märkta produkter.

Aim: Our study builds on what previous research has described as a gap between consumers' attitudes and behaviour to ethical consumption. ▼ Die vorliegende Studie beschäftigt sich mit der Diskrepanz zwischen der von Konsument*innen geäußerten Kaufabsicht und dem tatsächlichen, beobachtbaren Kaufverhalten (der sog. Intention-Behavior Gap). Dabei wurde die „Theory of Planned Behavior“ (TPB) als Werkzeug genutzt, um das Kaufverhalten bezüglich Fairtrade-Kaffees in Österreich zu analysieren und vorherzusagen. In diesem Sinne und angesichts der eher niedrigen statistischen Aussagekraft der genannten Theorie, wurden zusätzliche Variablen zur Erweiterung des traditionellen Modells beachtet. So wurden, nach der Durchführung einer Fokusgruppendiskussion, neun unabhängige Variablen mit scheinbar hoher Relevanz im Hinblick auf den Kaffeekonsum in Österreich ausgewählt. Dabei handelt es sich um das Gewohnheitskaufverhalten, das Wissen um Fairtrade, das tatsächliche Verständnis betreffend der Fairtrade-Organisation, das Vertrauen in die Marke, das Preis-Leistungs-Verhältnis, die empfundene Preisfairness, die wahrgenommene Konsumeffektivität, die wahrgenommene Erhältlichkeit sowie die selbstgeäußerte Absicht, Fairtrade-Kaffee zu kaufen. Anhand dieser Variablen wurde ein konzeptionelles Modell entwickelt und anschließend eine Querschnittsumfrage mit 334 Teilnehmenden durchgeführt. Die anschließende statistische Analyse der Daten umfasste vier verschiedene Dimensionen des Kaufverhaltens bzgl. Fairtrade-Kaffees: Ausgabenhöhe, vergangenes und versuchsweises Kaufverhalten sowie Häufigkeit des Kaufs von Fairtrade-Kaffee. Für die Analyse wurden zum einen Faktoranalysen, zum anderen einfache, mehrfache sowie binäre logistische und ordinale Regressionen als Auswertungstools implementiert. Auf diese Weise konnte im Rahmen der Studie die wichtige Rolle der Kaufabsichten in allen Dimensionen des Fairtrade-Kaufverhaltens gezeigt werden. Dadurch wurden die Haupterkenntnisse der TPB verifiziert und die Anwendbarkeit dieser Theorie zur Prognose des Kaufverhaltens bzgl. Fairtrade-Kaffees bestärkt. Darüber hinaus konnten durch die vorliegende Analyse weitere individuelle Effekte der einzelnen Variablen beobachtet werden. Nichtsdestotrotz waren diese bei Berücksichtigung mehrerer unabhängiger Variablen in den jeweiligen Regressionen nicht immer gleichbleibend. In diesem Sinne konnten außer den Kaufabsichten lediglich in zwei Dimensionen des Kaufverhaltens zusätzliche Effekte identifiziert werden: sowohl das Preis-Leistungs-Verhältnis als auch das Verständnis bzgl. der Fairtrade-Organisation hatten positive Einflüsse auf die Höhe der Ausgaben für Fairtrade-Kaffee. Die Kaufabsichten und das Fairtrade-Vertrauen zeigten in der Analyse des experimentellen Kaufverhaltens ähnlich positive Effekte. O presente estudo buscou investigar se o modelo de cooperativismo adotado por uma cooperativa de pequenos produtores rurais ligados à citricultura orgânica tem contribuído para o empowerment dos seus membros, ou seja, se os atores envolvidos, de forma individual ou coletiva, têm utilizado seus recursos econômicos, sociais, políticos e culturais para agir com responsabilidade no espaço público defendendo os seus direitos. Como a pobreza rural e as desigualdades sociais estão presentes em grande parte do território nacional, muitos produtores vêem no cooperativismo e em ferramentas como o comércio justo alternativas para a subsistência e uma forma de mediar as contradições políticas, ideológicas e psicológicas existentes nas sociedades. A organização estudada foi a Cooperativa dos Citricultores Ecológicos do Vale do Caí – ECOCITRUS. Localizada no município de Montenegro/RS, essa é a única cooperativa do Estado do Rio Grande do Sul com o selo de certificação internacional do comércio justo (Fair Trade). Adotando-se o método Estudo de Caso e como principal instrumento para coleta de dados a entrevista semi-estruturada realizada com pequenos produtores rurais associados – principalmente aqueles que participaram do processo de constituição da cooperativa – o autor procurou identificar e separar os cinco momentos do empowerment propostos por Kieffer (1984) e vivenciados pelos fundadores da cooperativa. Dessa maneira, o estudo concluiu que a inserção desses produtores no sistema cooperativista está contribuindo para mudanças positivas nas suas vidas, proporcionando a abertura de novas oportunidades, até então não vivenciadas por tais individuos. Em síntese, acredita-se que tais atores foram empoderados à medida que passaram a ter acesso a um poder anteriormente limitado, alterando significativamente as suas vidas.

The present study aimed at investigating if the cooperativeness model adopted by a cooperative of small rural producers developing organic citrus culture has contributed for the empowerment of its members, i. e., if the involved actors, either individually or collectively, have utilized their economical, social, political and cultural resources in order to perform with responsibility in the public space by defending their rights. As the rural poverty and social inequalities are present in a great part of the national territory, many producers see, in cooperativeness and in tools like the fair trade, the alternatives for subsistence and a way of mediating the political, ideological and psychological contradictions existing in society. ▼ O presente trabalho parte de duas proposições teóricas para chegar ao seguinte problema de pesquisa: Como os ganhos competitivos em redes de cooperação podem ser proporcionados aos artesãos em uma iniciativa de comércio justo? A partir deste problema de pesquisa, o trabalho tem como objetivo compreender empiricamente quais ganhos competitivos apresentados pela literatura são proporcionados aos artesãos que fazem parte de uma iniciativa de comércio justo e como os diversos atores que participam dessa iniciativa percebem esses ganhos competitivos. Para cumprir com o objetivo principal, os seguintes objetivos específicos foram determinados: identificar uma iniciativa de comércio justo de artesanato e analisá-la como uma rede de cooperação; mapear os atores que compõem essa iniciativa de comércio justo; identificar os ganhos competitivos dos artesãos a partir da visão da iniciativa de comércio justo; identificar os ganhos competitivos percebidos pelos artesãos que integram a iniciativa de comércio justo; complementar a análise com a visão de parte dos demais atores da rede sobre os ganhos competitivos identificados; e comparar os achados com os princípios e características do comércio justo. Como metodologia de pesquisa, foi realizado um estudo exploratório, com estratégia de estudo de caso único integrado com abordagem qualitativa. O caso estudado foi o da Rede Asta, sendo que as fontes de evidência utilizadas foram 8 entrevistas com roteiro semiestruturado, documentos da Rede Asta e observação direta informal, enquanto o tratamento e análise dos dados foram feitos por meio da análise de conteúdo, resultando em 20 categorias analíticas e 7 categorias finais após o reagrupamento das referidas categorias analíticas. Como primeiros resultados, foi possível justificar a escolha do caso, o analisando também como uma rede de cooperação. Ainda, os principais atores dessa rede foram mapeados, sendo eles os fornecedores, os grupos produtivos, a Rede Asta, as conselheiras, o consumidor final, as empresas e as organizações parceiras. Ao analisar o ganho competitivo de escala e poder de mercado, os principais achados foram relacionados ao acesso a mercados consumidores e ampliação de vendas, à relação com os fornecedores e à credibilidade e legitimidade. No ganho de acesso a soluções, os principais achados foram sobre as capacitações para precificação, a prospecção de empresas, a comunicação e valorização cultural e o acesso a crédito diferenciado. Em aprendizagem e inovação, os principais achados foram de troca de informações de mercado, tendências, produtos e técnicas, e de desenvolvimento de um novo produto. Já no ganho de redução de custos e riscos, os achados foram sobre a segurança de pagamento, adiantamentos e investimentos, e sobre o compartilhamento de atividades e complementariedade de técnicas. ▼ Fairtrade is one way to reach sustainable development in emerging countries, for example South America and Africa. Lately, Fairtrade has become highlighted and popular. This has led to studies on consumers’ view on Fairtrade, for instance in Belgium and America. Among the previous studies, the ethical consumer has been identified. At the moment, there is no research done in Sweden on who the Swedish Ethical Consumer is, regarding purchases of Fairtrade coffee. Therefore, with this thesis we want to fill the research gap on identifying the Swedish Ethical Consumer and which factors that influence him or her in the purchase decision. The study was performed on Swedish coffee consumers on Facebook. Different factors such as consumer related, environmental related, and product related, are measured to see if there is any relationship between these factors and how they influence the Swedish Ethical Consumer. With help from a snowball sampling technique and a self-administrated survey, 111 answers were collected. From that, we could identify the Swedish Ethical Consumer, given this sample. The result showed that product and demographics seemed to be the most affecting factors on ethical consumer behaviour. For this sample, brand (taste) of the product was by far the most popular product related factor to consider when buying coffee. From the environmental factors, the demographics were of greatest matter. Attitudes and knowledge were the most important consumer related factors. It seems like a majority of the respondents who think that Fairtrade is important (attitudes) also do buy Fairtrade coffee. Also, the respondents who possess much information (knowledge) about it tend to buy it. This study contributes to fill the gap in the lack of studies of Swedish Ethical Consumer behaviour. The conclusions can be used as a guideline and tool for companies to brand a new product. It could also be helpful for organisations to provide more information about Fairtrade to the consumers.

▼ Konsumenterna har under de senaste åren blivit mer och mer medvetna. Till följd av detta har företagens CSR arbete både ökat och utvecklats. Idag är CSR ett brett och svårdefinierat begrepp enligt många forskare. För att hjälpa konsumenterna att hitta rätt har diverse märkningar vuxit fram vilka syftar till att certifiera de initiativ som tas. Fairtradecertifieringen vilken använts som plattform i denna studie är en av många mer eller mindre välkända märkningar vilka finns för konsumenterna att tillgå. Fairtradecertifieringens främsta syfte är att främja rättvis behandling och skapa bättre arbets- och levnadsvillkor för odlare och anställda i tredjevärldsländer. Dit vi som konsumenter nu börjat lyfta våra blickar. Vi konsumenter har börjat fråga oss vem som egentligen betalar priset för vår konsumtion? Båda inom forskning och i direkta rapporter från näringslivet visar konsumenterna starkt intresse för hållbart arbete och inte minst etisk handel. Dock har inte detta intresse visat lika stor effekt i hur konsumenterna faktiskt handlar. Forskningen säger att en möjlig förklaring till detta är ett informations- och kunskapsgap hos konsumenterna. Att de faktiskt inte vet varför de skall handla eller vad det innebär när de handlar hållbart. Vi ställde oss därmed frågan: Vilken betydelse har information för konsumentens gap mellan intention och handling vid köp av Fairtradecertifierade varor? Studien genomfördes utifrån en experimentell metod i kombination med en enkätundersökning, vilken syftade till att kartlägga studenternas uppfattning om Fairtradecertifieringen och undersöka huruvida det fanns ett samband mellan dessa och informationsperceptionen. Vi ensamställde informationsfaktorn i experimentet och fann att den inte har en ensam påverkan isolerad och som presenterad i experimentet. Däremot antydde resultaten att information har en effekt på konsumenternas uppfattning såväl som på köpbeslut. Studien visade även en stor spridning i uppfattning om Fairtradecertifieringen, där det bland annat indikerades en hög grad av trovärdighet samt att ett informationsbehov verkade existera.

The aim of this thesis is to examine the properties of the municipalities in Sweden that influence the choice of being a certified Fairtrade city. The independent variables which are used in the statistical analysis are municipal governance, local tax rate, whether there is an university and/or university college in the municipality, average income and higher education in the municipality. The variables are examined by logistic regression. Since there are no statistical data on ethical procurement, this exogenous variable isn’t included in the regression. Through interviews with representatives of municipalities in Sweden with and without Fairtrade city certification and logistic regression we have been able to reach a result. The interviews gave an insight in how a municipality in reality acts when it comes to the certification Fairtrade city. The result of the statistical analysis is that a larger proportion with higher education in the population, having university and/or university college in the municipality and a Leftist majority (Social Democrats, Environmental Party and Left Party) on the Municipality Council increase the probability that a municipality is a certificated Fair trade city.

Uppsatsens syfte är att undersöka vilka egenskaper hos kommuner i Sverige som kan påverka valet av att vara en diplomerad Fairtrade city. De oberoende variabler som används i den statistiska analysen, är kommunens politiska styre, kommunalskattesats, om det finns universitet och/eller högskola i kommunen, medelinkomst samt eftergymnasial utbildning inom kommunen. Variablerna undersöks med logistisk regression. Etisk offentlig upphandling finns ingen statistisk data över, därför är denna exogena variabel inte med i studiens logistiska regressionsmodell. Med hjälp av intervjuer med kommuner i Sverige som har diplomeringen respektive inte har den, har vi haft möjlighet att komplettera vårt resultat från den logistiska regressions analysen. Intervjuerna gav en insikt i hur en kommun i verkligheten ställer sig kring diplomeringen Fairtrade city. Resultat visar sannolikheten att en kommun är Fairtrade city är större ju högre andel av befolkningen som har eftergymnasial utbildning; om kommunen har universitet och/eller högskola och om den har ett vänsterstyre.

O sistema Fairtrade é um comércio alternativo, norteado nas relações de troca mais justas visando uma maior equidade no mercado internacional, por meio do desenvolvimento sustentável dos produtores e trabalhadores, tidos como marginalizados, especialmente, do Hemisfério Sul. Ressalta-se que a constituição dos mercados de produtos certificados não ocorre de forma instintiva, e sim, de forma negociada entre os agentes envolvidos. Conforme esses mercados são ajustados, novas estruturas de governança surgem e são reestruturados para se adequar às novas demandas e dinâmicas instituídas (LEME et al, 2013). No Brasil, a certificação Fairtrade é aplicada em diversos produtos; contudo, os que mais se destacam são o café, o suco de laranja e as frutas frescas. Alguns estudos acadêmicos já foram desenvolvidos para melhor compreender a referida certificação no café e suco de laranja; no entanto, no Brasil, ainda carece desses estudos voltados para as frutas frescas, em esfera nacional. Pensando nessa carência, a presente pesquisa tomou como objeto de análise a rede Fairtrade Frutas Frescas Brasileiras. Para a realização de tal estudo, foi utilizada a Teoria dos Custos de Transação, com o intuito de identificar e analisar os contratos existentes na referida rede, bem como verificar a atuação da Fairtrade International. Nesta pesquisa, foram considerados dados secundários e entrevistas com os representantes das 13(treze) organizações produtoras contempladas neste estudo, assim como da Fairtrade International, das traders e, de outras organizações que compõem a rede. As análises permitiram identificar que a Fairtrade International é o centro estratégico da rede Fairtrade Frutas Frescas, o qual é responsável pela coordenação de toda a rede. Também foram identificados três tipos de contratos envolvendo as organizações produtoras (OPs), os quais ligam as OPs à rede Fairtrade, aos traders, e aos seus importadores. A relação que surge nas transações contratuais na rede é de dependência trilateral e os contratos são do tipo neoclássico. Frisa-se que, como o sistema Fairtrade prima pelas relações duradouras entre produtores e importadores, espera-se que os contratos evoluam de neoclássicos para relacionais, porém, a pesquisa evidenciou que a frequência dos contratos identificados é discreta. Também, ficou claro que a Fairtrade International vem, em suas ações, priorizando o atendimento de critérios de conformidade por parte dos produtores, em detrimento do fortalecimento das relações contratuais existentes na rede.

▼ Background - The concept of fair trade is not recent following the academic literature as it has been around for many years. The connection between fair trade and how it impacts consumers purchase behaviour however is still unclear. Purpose - The purpose of this study is to expand understanding on the relationship between fair trade and the consumer purchase process. Design/methodology/approach - The four stage AIDA model has been selected to examine fair trade in consumer purchase behaviour. Furthermore the study has been quantitative and a questionnaire was used gathering 140 respondents. Findings - A clear correlation between the different AIDA stages were established and the influence of fair trade on the purchasing behaviour was somewhat explored. Despite no proven hypotheses, many respondents still agreed with the fair trade statements tested showing strong awareness and consideration towards the topic. The most notable facets included social and environmental factors. In addition it was established that even though labour rights are discussed regularly in media, no significant influence could be observed in any of the AIDA purchase stages. Research limitations/implications -The limitations of the study were the geographical constraints testing only one university in Sweden. This meant that the respondents did not come from different cultures and countries, potentially affecting the discussed results. In addition, should the study have been qualitative different insights may have been established. Practical implications -The results from this study is useful for Non Government Organisations (NGOs) that are trying to shift consumer behaviour towards considering more ethical aspects when purchasing clothes. Marketers may also benefit from this study knowing what stages of the decision making process are considered by consumers in respect of fair trade. Originality/value -This study is unique as it combines the fair trade concept with the AIDA model which has not yet been done. In addition it contributes to previous knowledge and research on fair trade connected to the purchase behaviour.

▼ The rise of ethical certifications was greeted with optimism by scholars, activists and development practitioners, who predicted they would help to redistribute power and profit more equitably in South-North commodity trade, which has long been an engine of wealth extraction and underdevelopment in the resource periphery. The explicit attachment of value to the social and territorial origin of agro-food products would allow marginalised producers to resist corporate governance, race-to-the-bottom processes, and commodity fetishism. This would result in the retention of higher value at the production end of the chain, thereby fostering sustainable development in rural areas in the Global South. I investigate the extent to which power and profit is indeed redistributed more equitably in these new ‘ethical value networks’, through a case study of the South African wine industry. Complex apparatus of standards-setting, verification and auditing have formed the basis of strategies for post-apartheid transformation, redistribution and development in the South African wine industry, with progress conceptualised as taking place at the level of business. In this context, ethical certification constitutes a contemporary labour relations paradigm which in key ways reproduces ‘colonial unconscious’ discourses derived from the legacies of slavery, apartheid and farm paternalism. These embedded discursive power formations restrict the transformative potential of ethical certification. For ethical development to occur as a result of ethical value network formation, I argue that workers must gain greater agency and regulatory capability in the governance of these networks. I find also that ethical certification has not been an effective economic upgrading strategy for the South African wine industry. Instead, due to their deployment within oligopolistic networks, ethics have become commodified, and subject to neoliberal governance. Northern retailers have used their existing power to accumulate the value created by alignment with ethical conventions, and to avoid the costs. Ethical certifications compound the severe ‘cost-price squeeze’ faced by wine producers. This case study has broader implications for the theory of ethical value networks: showing that they are relational, geographically contingent, and remain susceptible to asymmetric governance and accumulation patterns. ▼ Diplomamunkám elsődleges célja a fair trade mozgalom elemzése, valamint annak a Fenntartható Fejlesztési Célokra gyakorolt hatásainak vizsgálata. Az SDG-k elsődleges célja a fejlődő országokban elő hátrányos helyzetű szegénység felemelése és egy környezeti szempontból is fenntartható fejlődés elérése. Vizsgálódásom alapvető oka, hogy vajon ehhez mennyiben és mekkora sikerrel járul hozzá a fair trade mozgalom által lebonyolított kereskedelem a fejlődő és fejlett országok között. Elemzésemet a szabad és a méltányos kereskedelem összehasonlításával és egymásra gyakorolt hatásával kezdtem. Szakirodalmi áttekintésem végére kiderül, hogy a fair trade gyakorlatilag egy a hagyományos kereskedelem és a globalizáció problémáira adott válaszreakció, mellyel a hátrahagyottakat próbálják elindítani a fenntartható fejlődés útján. Részletesen jellemeztem a fair trade mozgalmat. Kialakulásának történetének, alapvető célkitűzéseinek, főbb szervezeteinek, minősítési rendszerének, elosztási csatornáinak és árképzésének ismertetése útján átfogó képet kaptam a mozgalom lényegéről és rendszeréről. Kiderül, hogy a mozgalom konkrétan a célok közül pontosan melyikekhez járul hozzá több kevésebb sikerrel. Azokhoz a célok megvalósításához, amelyekre valóban hatással lehet (a részletesen kifejtett 7 cél), sikeresen járul hozzá. A következtetések során leírtam, hogy habár számos kritika éri a fair trade mozgalmat (nem elég transzparencia, korrupció, túltermelés, minőség stb.), pozitív hatásai ellensúlyozzák ezeket. A mozgalom hozzájárul egy egyenlőbb és méltányosabb világ kialakításához és sikeresen felhívja a figyelmet nemzetközi kereskedelem negatív hatásaira, melyek mellett egy fenntartható, a következő generációk számára is élhető jövő biztosításához járul hozzá.
