▼ Facilitation is key to engaging people in transformational change and facilitators require considerable skill. However, a thorough understanding of the nature of facilitation and how people develop as facilitators remains elusive. This research investigated the experiences of practice development (PD) facilitators regarding their understanding of transformational facilitation and becoming skilled.
The research was situated within the Constructivist paradigm and used Naturalistic Inquiry as the guiding methodology. The study was a two-stage in-depth exploration of the topic. The first stage incorporated 15 interviews with PD facilitators in Australia/New Zealand to gain their understanding of transformational facilitation and their practice as a facilitator. The second stage allowed for deeper understanding, and elaboration, of the themes identified in stage 1. This stage explored transformational facilitation internationally through interviews with seven leading PD facilitators from four European countries.
Seven overlapping and interacting themes were identified that formed three distinct clusters. Within each theme there was evidence of a continuum of development. Inexperienced facilitators were at one end of the continuum with those who were highly skilled at the other end. The continuum reflected the increasing sophistication of facilitators’ thinking and management of situations as they gained expertise.
Cluster 1: Internal to the facilitator identified elements that related to the way a facilitator thinks (𝙞𝙣𝙨𝙞𝙙𝙚 𝙮𝙤𝙪𝙧 𝙤𝙬𝙣 𝙝𝙚𝙖𝙙), the way they interact with groups, finding the right balance in facilitation to enable people to transform practice and to flourish (𝙬𝙖𝙡𝙠𝙞𝙣𝙜 𝙖 𝙛𝙞𝙣𝙚 𝙡𝙞𝙣𝙚) and how they react to situations and manage their own reactions (𝙗𝙚𝙞𝙣𝙜 𝙢𝙚).
Cluster 2: External to the facilitator related to facilitators’ development. This cluster incorporated the significant learning that was gained from interactions with other facilitators (𝙖 𝙡𝙚𝙣𝙨 𝙤𝙣 𝙛𝙖𝙘𝙞𝙡𝙞𝙩𝙖𝙩𝙞𝙤𝙣) and getting to grips with and using theories to underpin facilitation practice (𝙢𝙖𝙠𝙞𝙣𝙜 𝙨𝙚𝙣𝙨𝙚 𝙤𝙛 𝙩𝙝𝙚𝙤𝙧𝙮).
Cluster 3: Enacting transformational facilitation conveyed how facilitators assimilated their learning and experiences to enable them to work effectively with people in diverse settings (𝙪𝙣𝙙𝙚𝙧𝙨𝙩𝙖𝙣𝙙𝙞𝙣𝙜 𝙥𝙚𝙤𝙥𝙡𝙚 𝙞𝙣 𝙘𝙤𝙣𝙩𝙚𝙭𝙩) and become flexible in their practice (𝙗𝙚𝙞𝙣𝙜 𝙛𝙡𝙪𝙞𝙙).
This doctoral study provides new insights regarding the nature of skilled facilitation and ways in which facilitators practice and develop themselves. The findings contribute new knowledge about the inner dialogue of facilitators and how they draw together all aspects of their practice to enable transformation in individuals, teams and healthcare cultures. These findings have implications for all facilitators, as well as facilitation practice and ways to support facilitator development.

▼ Literature shows that when fathers are involved in their childrens lives, their children have better outcomes and neighborhoods are safer. However, father involvement is often limited in situations where the father is a non-residential parent. Previous research has indicated that there are several factors that may influence a custodial mothers
facilitation of the father-child relationship. These factors may include the existing co-parenting relationship between mother and father and the mothers perception of the fathers appreciation of her mothering of the child. Particularly in low-income families, the struggle to simply meet economic demands overrides a custodial parents desire to facilitate the relationship.
The purpose of this qualitative study was to understand the perspective of single, never-married, low-income, custodial Black mothers related to their
facilitation of the father-child relationship when the father does not reside in the home with the mother and child. The Theory of Planned Behavior (Ajzen, 1991) was employed as the conceptual framework of this study. This theory is used to help understand how a mothers intent to facilitate the father-child relationship is partly influenced by her capacity to do so.
Using purposive sampling, I interviewed 10 participants who identified as Black mothers with children between the ages of 5 and 11 whose father identified as Black and did not reside in the home. The participants also all self-reported as low-income. A constructivist perspective was employed during data collection and analysis, which allowed the participants perceptions to be heard individually and collectively.
Four themes emerged through the coding and analysis of the interview transcripts. The first was that mothers felt that their efforts to facilitate the father-child relationship went unappreciated. The second theme was that mothers perceived that fathers were not taking responsibility for their lives and helping themselves. The third theme was that mothers had an expiration of time with which to work with the fathers. When they felt their effort to facilitate the father-child relationship was not increasing the fathers involvement, the mothers halted their efforts altogether.
The fourth theme was that mothers drew upon a variety of support sources beyond working with the father. The findings of this descriptive study can be used to influence the development of co-parenting curricula, to improve family-court mediation, and to support healthy relationships among unwed and fragile families.

▼ Facilitation is the use of dialogue as a strategic communication tool. It leverages the power of conversation to build shared understanding, generate new thinking, and affect an intended course of action. In the context of business communication, where complexity and change are mainstays, facilitation surfaces as a valuable communication tool for transforming unbridled complexity into meaningful knowledge.
As a case study, The China-US Business Leaders Round Table (CUSBLR) provided a unique platform to explore the use and impact of facilitation on improving the level of discussion and participant engagement in business communication. My goal was to remodel the round table conversation as a facilitator. The experience of learning how to facilitate uncovered a number of insights and connections between facilitation and other domains, including design, leadership, and improv. This project therefore documents a process of inquiry and offers a new framework for understanding facilitation.

▼ Building and nurturing an active partnership between the community college and the hospitality/tourism industry, that will look beyond the scope of currently existing internship environment at the workplace for all workers to enable to learn continuously in fundamental to the creation of a quality workforce. A workforce that can adequately meet the needs of the industry and boldly face the world of the future. The burning issue is - are partnerships between educators and the industry to provide training and education feasible? Cross sectional study was undertaken in the present environment in the Province of Ontario in Canada. This study, through a survey questionnaire gathered data from the hospitality/tourism educators and the managers. The hypothesis was that the study will show the need for a partners arrangement that will be efficient and effective for developing the full potential of the workforce to pursue the organizations quality and performance objectives. Another expectation was that it will demonstrate to Canadian Community College faculties as well as the Human Resource Managers in the industry the compelling need for collaborative and co operative thinking on strategy formulation for future management/employee training programs. This study concludes that partnerships are feasible as there is evidence of interest on both the sides to the principles of collaborative ventures. It recommends undertaking of a pilot project to test the practicality of a working relationship.

▼ Cyanobacterial blooms pose a serious threat to the water quality of freshwater lakes because of their scums, toxins, and odors. Synergistic interactions between eutrophication and climate change may be causing cyanobacterial blooms to increase worldwide, which will have substantial consequences for aquatic food webs and nutrient concentrations in lakes. In particular, the trophic state of a lake may be an important determinant of how blooms affect ecosystem functioning. In this dissertation, I used a combination of literature reviews, field surveys, field experiments, and laboratory experiments to examine the causes and effects of cyanobacterial blooms in both oligotrophic and eutrophic freshwater lakes. My research shows that increased nutrients are an important driver of the global increase in cyanobacterial blooms, and future climatic and hydrological conditions may interact to favor cyanobacterial dominance. My experiments with G. echinulata, a cyanobacterium that is increasing in the northeastern United States, demonstrate that high densities of G. echinulata can increase nitrogen and phosphorus concentrations in low nutrient lakes. In these systems, G. echinulata can play an important role structuring food webs by increasing the biomass of small-sized phytoplankton. G. echinulata's interactions with phytoplankton are fairly complex, iii however, as I observed that its positive effects were mediated by both trophic interactions (zooplankton biomass) and trophic state (nutrient concentrations), highlighting the context-dependency of the effect of this species on other plankton. I found that nutrients play an important role mediating G. echinulata's effects on phytoplankton: first, increasing nutrients in the water column may be the mechanism by which G. echinulata stimulate other phytoplankton in oligotrophic systems, and second, nutrient concentrations may alter the direction of G. echinulata's effect (i.e., stimulatory or inhibitory) on other plankton. Finally, my data demonstrate that G. echinulata blooms in oligotrophic lakes may have important consequences for water quality. As cyanobacteria continue to increase, it is vitally important to understand how both oligotrophic and eutrophic systems will respond. iv

▼ An overwhelming amount of research has generalized rules to the psycholinguistic mechanisms underlying visual word recognition. Most theories are based on studies of Indo-European languages in general, English in particular. Naturally, due to the universal principal of language, some researchers believe that the application of theories of language processing is universal despite that they were built on observations from specific languages. Conversely, other researchers think that language-specific variations warrant different psycholinguistic mechanisms for typologically different languages. To resolve the tension between the two perspectives, cross-linguistic methods in language processing thus become the focus of the field. Comparisons across languages allow researchers to investigate the universalities and the specificities of language processing. Therefore, in recent years, researchers have shown an increased interest in the study of non-alphabetic languages because of its different formats in the way that various orthographies represent spoken languages. Much debate has focused on whether orthographic-specific processing is related to the reading of different orthographies.

▼ Creative facilitation sessions come to solve the complex problems the world is facing nowadays. Using participants from different work areas to walk through a problem together, these sessions are guided by facilitators. They are the ones expected to bring a creative mindset to the involved people. LEF Future Center, part of Rijkswaterstaat since 2008, brings a contribution to the power of change and the problem-solving capacity of their stakeholders. They have a set of creative environments to properly stimulate participants during the facilitation sessions. This project, done in combination between TU Delft and LEF Future Center, focuses on supporting participants’ creativity during sessions at LEF. The creative diamond (Guilford, 1950) is the basis approach
for facilitation sessions, distinguishing between participants’ divergence and convergence thinking. During the first, many ideas are generated, while comes to a final idea/decision when converging. It is common to let participants make use of different means to generate ideas, like whiteboards, sticking notes, and markers.
It is known that people might underrate their own creativity, and the facilitators' work is to facilitate participants’ creativity. Written, visual and verbal communication is important to let participants express their ideas to each other during sessions. Besides the classical creative diamond, newer studies have shown the need to differentiate
a step in-between the divergence and convergence phases (eg. Tassaul and Buijs; Kaner; Heijne and Smit). It is called revergence and aims to revisit and rearrange every generated idea during the divergence, by making clusters. A literature study was executed to investigate further developments in the creative diamond approach, as well as what influence people’s creativity. At LEF, facilitators let participants generate as
many ideas as possible (when diverging), and to come up with a final solution to the indicated problem (when converging). Further investigation with context observations and interviews with facilitators was performed. It was confirmed that not every facilitator does the converging phase of the session, and that many are not aware
of the reverging as a separate stage from converging. In the end, clusters of ideas can be created in a messy mean, leading to deliverables for clients that may not show the full creative potential of the session. As a way to stimulate participants’ generation of ideas and the creation of clusters, the design of the tool thus focuses on supporting facilitators to perform the revergence phase of sessions. Joining findings from both the literature review and context mapping, a promising direction was identified in the use of combination tools for the three phases of the sessions. Using rapid prototyping tests
of the tools, a toolkit structure for performing the reverging phase was designed: the Clustalk toolkit.

▼ In 2001 the Institute of Medicine identified a significant gap between what is known about how we care for patients and the care that they receive. This identified gap renewed interest in the development and implementation of evidence-based practice (EBP). A number of research studies have evaluated barriers to EBP yet questions still arise as to why evidence is not routinely incorporated into practice. This led to a new field of inquiry called implementation science focused on methods for translating evidence into practice. The Promoting Action on Research Implementation in Health Services (PARiHS) framework purports that successful implementation of EBP is a function of the strength of the evidence to be implemented, the quality of the context into which it will be implemented and appropriate
facilitation. There currently are levels of evidence and measures of context that can be utilized but no measures of appropriate
facilitation. The purpose of this research was to develop an instrument (the
Facilitation Assessment Index) to measure
facilitation. This methodological study was conducted to determine the psychometric properties of an investigator-developed instrument to define and measure the concept of
facilitation. The instrument was distributed to1025 Registered Nurses in an Academic Medical Center. The response rate was 28%. The majority of respondents were in a staff nurse role, over age 35 and had at least a Bachelor's degree. The
Facilitation Assessment Index (FAI) demonstrated adequate psychometrics. Factor analysis delineated four subscales entitled Support, Leadership, Respect and Autonomy. The overall reliability of the scale was r = .93 and the range of reliability of the subscales was r = .85-.93. The test-retest correlation for the total scale was r = .85 (p<.001). Correlations for the subscales ranged from r = .61-.85 (p<.01).Relationships between demographic variables and
facilitation were evaluated. Both unit and job title variables demonstrated relationships with scale scores but group sizes were not equal. Future research is needed to strengthen the psychometric properties of the FAI. Subsequent research could focus on use in strengthening the PARiHS framework and quantifying the amount of
facilitation needed to implement EBP.

▼ The purpose of this research was to examine the relation between students' personality traits and the extent of their engagement and
facilitation in peer-led literature circle discussions. The research was guided by two questions. To what extent do reading ability, gender, and personality traits predict the quality of verbal engagement in literature circles? and How do highly engaged participants facilitate discussion in the circles? The researcher video-taped 17 fourth-grade students' literature circle discussions for a total of 136.7 minutes collected on two separate occasions across two weeks. To answer the first question student contributions in discussions were quantified into a measure of quality of verbal engagement score (cf. Costa & Kallick, 2000). This quality of verbal engagement score served as the dependent variable in a multiple regression. The seven independent variables were (1) extroversion, (2) agreeableness, (3) conscientiousness, (4) emotional stability, (5) openness, (6) reading ability, and (7) gender. The quantitative analysis in this study revealed that emotional stability was the only significant variable that predicted higher quality of verbal engagement. A post hoc analysis that included group size as an additional variable revealed that groups composed of three members correlated with higher overall quality of verbal engagement. The second question was answered through a qualitative analysis of the following: exploratory talk, elaborative feedback, topic management, confessionals, and accountability. Results of this analysis suggest that highly engaged students frequently enhance the group discussions through
facilitation. This study extended the extant research by investigating individual factors that may influence the quality of literature circle discussions as well as suggested a framework for understanding
facilitation in peer-led literature circle discussions. Further research is needed to determine the influence of group size and personality on varying grade levels.

▼ The Issue: The integration of evidence into practice is a complex process. Facilitation is a strategy that may assist practitioners with enhancing evidence uptake in nursing practice. However, the concept is not well understood from a front-line nursing perspective.
Thesis Objectives: To describe facilitation in moving evidence into nursing practice and determine the nature of the facilitator role and the process of facilitation in theory and from actual experience to develop a conceptual framework to guide practitioners.
Methods: A descriptive design utilizing mixed methods was employed: 1) Focused review of the literature that synthesized the current state of knowledge on facilitation as role and process in the implementation of evidence-based practice (EBP) in nursing. 2) Case audit and focus group interview with facilitators of cases involved in adapting guidelines and planning for implementation.
A provisional framework was developed based on the literature review which guided the case audit and focus group interview. The data from the literature was integrated with data from those actively involved in facilitation to refine the framework.
Results:
Focused literature review: A final set of 39 papers were identified. Facilitation is described as supporting and enabling practitioners to improve practice through evidence implementation. Certain aspects of the role and the strategies being employed to promote change are evident. Current literature reveals that facilitation is viewed as an individual role as well as a process involving individuals and groups.
Case audit and focus group interview: Forty-six discrete, practical facilitation activities discovered in the literature were in large part found as occurring within the cases. An additional 5 new, distinct activities related to facilitation were found in the case documentation. Findings suggest that facilitation is a multifaceted process and a team effort. Communication and relationship-building are key elements.
Conclusion: The transparency and detail displayed in the revised framework may contribute to systematically developing, implementing, and testing facilitation interventions in nursing contexts. Facilitation is clearly an important strategy to advance EBP and the improved understanding of facilitation offered in this thesis provides a guiding framework for future investigations of evidence implementation where facilitation is a key element.

▼ Although social facilitation has been extensively studied over the last 50 years in various domains, it has largely been understudied in the context of team sports. A total of 8950 National Basketball Association (NBA) games were investigated to assess how a team’s skill level and experience interact with audience size to predict performance. More specifically, audience size was measured in two ways: as the number of people in attendance at each game and whether the game was locally televised (fewer television viewers) or nationally televised (more television viewers). Contrary to expectations, underdog teams performed significantly better with larger audiences, an effect not found for their favoured counterparts. Also contrary to expectations, teams less experienced than their opponents performed significantly better in nationally televised games than in locally televised games. This effect was not found for more experienced teams. Additionally, no teams experienced a decrease in performance. These results add important findings to the information regarding sports and social facilitation and provide insight into team selection for high stakes games. They also enhance the sporting literature base which is considerably lacking in its assessment of social facilitation effects.

▼ The aim of this thesis is to better understand the role of the facilitator in action learning groups. In particular, it focuses on groups established within an organisation, in which the facilitator is a member of the organisation. The two central research questions are: (1) How did the facilitator influence problem solving and group interactions, and how did this vary over time and between each group, and (2) How did the facilitator's role in the organisation impact on the action learning groups? The methodology of action research and a number of principles of grounded theory are employed. The investigation was conducted within a large public teaching hospital over a two year period. Four groups volunteered to participate in the project. Two of these groups were already established and two were newly created for the purpose of the research project. The groups came from different departments and members represented a range of professional backgrounds. The size of the groups ranged from 5 to 12 participants. Each group identified a real and significant project to work through using an action learning approach. The researcher negotiated with each group what it wanted from a facilitator role, and then facilitated each meeting. All group meetings and individual interviews were audiotaped and the facilitator kept journal notes after each meeting or interview. Two potential methodological issues arose. The first related to the application of some of the principles of grounded theory to the action research investigation. The second was that the study was conducted in the researcher’s own organisation while the researcher was employed full-time, and this posed particular issues.Literature related to action learning, process consultation and small group facilitation was explored in the literature review. The purpose of this review was to critically evaluate different perspectives and approaches by frequently cited authors in these subjects, and to understand the uses and limitations of existing models. This gave the researcher an understanding of gaps in the literature related to (1) the role of the facilitator of action learning groups, and (2) conducting research in one’s organisation.Data were analysed for each group separately and then compared and contrasted in the final chapter. The objectives of the analysis were to (1) examine how the findings for each individual group address the research questions, (2) explore how the findings in each group change over time, and (2) examine how and why the findings in the groups were similar and different to each other. The findings across each of the groups have similarities and differences. There were seven interventions used by the facilitator that were common across the groups. The interventions changed over the duration of the project. Process skills were required to different degrees and at different times. Nine hypotheses were developed as the theory. Some key findings are as follows. First, it was found that groups that have not had prior experience in action learning do not…

▼ The study examines the effects of being observed via a one-way screen on individuals' ability to learn competitive and non-competitive lists of paired associates. A between-groups design was used, with different subjects serving in each of the four experimental groups. The study was initially carried out with male business administration students at the University of Washington and was repeated with student nurses at the University of British Columbia. All subjects were administered the Manifest Anxiety Scale (Taylor, 1953) and the Suspiciousness Scale (Endicott et al., 1969). The results showed that the male subjects were not significantly affected by observation from behind a one-way screen but that the females made significantly more errors on the competitive list when observed as opposed to when not observed. In learning the non-competitive list the females were also not affected by- observation, but the overall observation-by-list interaction was significant for the females. No relationships were found between performances on the experimental task and the Manifest Anxiety Scale scores for either males or females. Suspiciousness Scale scores were significantly and negatively related to the number of errors made by the males when the four experimental groups were combined; this relationship approached significance for the females.
Implications for further research are discussed.

▼ Research Doctorate - Doctor of Philosophy (PhD)
Problem-based learning (PBL) is becoming widely used in many professional education settings, including in engineering education. PBL, as a teaching approach, is claimed to stimulate the students’ higher order thinking, encourage discussion and exploration, enhance problem solving skills and stimulate the learners’ interest. PBL, as presented in the literature, supports a shift from teacher-directed learning to teacher-facilitated learning. PBL facilitation involves a different style of teaching, and from the experiences of both the students and teachers brings several challenges. A skilled facilitator who is secure in their role can contribute significantly to PBL group work, and thus to the students’ learning. The purpose of this study is to investigate the students’ and teachers’ perceptions of what constitutes effective PBL facilitation in engineering education in Malaysia. A qualitative research methodology was employed. Specifically, twenty teachers were interviewed, and thirty students were interviewed in focus groups. Their views were sought on the roles of effective PBL facilitators, the characteristics of effective PBL facilitation, the changes in the teachers’ facilitation styles as the students progressed in the PBL curricula and the challenges that the teachers faced in facilitating PBL. Institute A’s PBL documents were also analysed as secondary data sources. Using thematic analyses, a series of themes emerged from the data concerning the attributes of effective PBL facilitation. They included a combination of the teacher as a process expert in facilitating learning, a content expert who skilfully uses their knowledge, a technical expert who imparts technical knowledge and skills to the students, as well a teacher with positive personality attributes. This study also established that the facilitation styles of teachers depend on the level of the programme being taught, as well as the level of the students’ understanding in each individual group. Teachers learn when to regulate their facilitation as PBL courses progress. However, the importance of the teachers’ personality attributes, as supporters and motivators of the students’ learning, carries the same weight for all levels of students, regardless of whether they are novices or of advanced standing. This study found that the major challenges that teachers face in facilitating PBL include their adaptation to PBL, the students’ adaptation to PBL , the PBL trainings for teachers and the support teachers received from their managers and colleagues. The recommendations for institutional managers include well-organised and structured orientation programs for teachers new to PBL and a thorough PBL orientation for students. A PBL Support Group should be formed to provide continuous support for the teachers. Evidence from this study also showed that it is critical that adequate learning resources and sufficient time be allowed for the students to complete the self-directed learning required for PBL. The…

▼ The export performance of Africa has declined over the past couple of decades as a result of an increase in trade costs and the time taken to complete a trade transaction. As a result of an increase in competition, countries need to improve their efforts in adopting and developing a trade development initiative. Trade facilitation has been recognised as an element of economic growth, and it is thus seen as the most prominent trade development initiative in stimulating exports.
The general objective of this study was to investigate the current state and effect of trade facilitation in South Africa and to develop a measurement to compare South Africa's state of trade facilitation performance with that of other countries in the world.
The purpose of this study was to analyse and present the importance of implementing a trade facilitation programme as a trade development initiative. The need to eliminate trade barriers such as increased trade costs and the time taken to complete a trade transaction were emphasised because of the threat that they pose to efficient trade facilitation reform.
Although the advantages of trade facilitation reform have long been recognised, studies on the measurement of trade facilitation are very scarce. Similar studies make use of a gravity model or a Computable General Equilibrium (CGE) model in order to quantify the effects, but due to indirect costs, statistical errors, incorrect proxies and other unrecognised variables, no exact index exists to measure the trade facilitation performance of world countries.
Four very relevant trade performance indexes, the Logistics Performance Index, the Doing Business Report, the Enabling Trade Index and the Global Competitiveness Report, are associated with measuring a country's domestic trade variables, present in either the "hard" or the "soft" infrastructure of a country. From these indexes, 18 relevant variables were chosen that were effectively used to construct the Trade Facilitation Index whereby the trade facilitation performance of world countries was compared to that of South Africa.
In South Africa, the urgency to improve the general trade environment has been recognised as trade performance in South Africa has declined considerably. Based on the relevance of trade facilitation and the beneficial effects it has on a country, the role of trade facilitation in South Africa was analysed, as well as its performance in the Trade Facilitation Index in comparison to that of other world countries.
The Trade Facilitation Index also correlates to a country's GDP and its exports, proving that an increase in the Trade Facilitation Index may lead to an increase in the country's GDP and also its exports. The Trade Facilitation Index therefore serves as a useful resource for policy makers who want to apply reform strategies to trade development initiatives.

▼ Post-traumatic stress syndrome (PTSD) is a disorder characterized by frequent vivid memories of a traumatic event. A current effective treatment for PTSD is Eye Movement Desensitisation Reprocessing treatment (EMDR). A model to explain the desensitizing effects by eye movements is the dual task hypothesis of working memory (WM). This posits that eye movements as second task exceed WM capacity, thus blurring subsequent reconsolidation of the (traumatic) memory. Eye movements prior to recall however have also been observed to facilitate memory. This thesis reviews several models to analyse whether the conflicting findings could result from one underlying process, or whether procedural differences in study design are likely to generate the opposing effects.

▼ Reasons for the apparent low density of Quercus robur recruits in Białowieża Primeval Forest are unclear. In this study we investigated the effects of
facilitation by protective structures, negative effects of presence of mature Quercus robur and effects of forest type on the regeneration of oak saplings in the forest. Data was collected from 47 km of transects and on two scales: a large scale survey of forest characteristics using plots every 50 metres along the transects and a local scale survey of sapling characteristics and environment using plots centred on all of the 161 saplings found along the transects and nearby paired control plots. The study area consisted of a strictly protected area, and an area
subject to limited management.
Facilitation by protective structures, predominantly dead Picea abies debris, was shown to be particularly important for larger saplings due to their higher vulnerability to browsing. Presence of mature Quercus robur had no significant effect on sapling success. Saplings showed a strong tendency to be found in coniferous forest types as measured on the large scale but not necessarily to be found in proximity to coniferous individuals at the local scale. This forest type preference can be attributed to greater abundance of Picea abies debris as a source of protection in coniferous forest types; a weakened preference for these forest types was found in areas where tree debris was removed indicating that forest type preference is caused by high levels of tree debris in coniferous forest types.

▼ Background: Melodic Intonation Therapy is a speech production therapy for aphasic patients, in which melodic aspect of speech are used to improve speech production. The therapy has shown to be effective for a specific group of patients. Furthermore, MIT is a very intensive therapy. Therefore, there is relevance to know for which patients MIT is facilitating.
Aim: The main goal of this study is to determine indications for the
facilitation of MIT repetition.
Materials and methods: In 11 aphasic patients, who are possible MIT candidates, normal repetition is compared to MIT repetition. This study analyzes the differences between patients that do or do not show
facilitation for MIT repetition. There will be looked at scores on regular aphasia tests and articulatory or phonological problems shown in these tasks.
Results: Most patients do not show
facilitation of MIT repetition. This is remarkable, because patients and therapists often report
facilitation for MIT repetition. Only two patients showed
facilitation and two patients showed decline for MIT repetition. The patients in whom
facilitation was found suffered from articulatory difficulties.
Conclusions: In most patients examined in this study, MIT repetition does not facilitate speech production. Therefore, no predictors could be differentiated for the purpose of indicating MIT candidates.

▼ To date barely any research has investigated the influence of important others on performance in pressure situations. It was hypothesized that important others can induce choking and
facilitation depending on timing.
Facilitation was expected when names of important others were primed before skill execution, whereas choking was expected when primed during skill execution. Two experiments were performed to test the hypotheses, using an arithmetic problem solving and a basketball shooting task. While important others were previously thought to facilitate performance, the present research suggests that they can also distract, and thereby harm performance. Moreover, a facilitating effect of close important others was found when individual differences are considered. The mechanism that is proposed is that important others induce distracting goal-directed behaviour, instead of task-directed behaviour. Findings and implications are discussed in the light of current literature and suggestions for future research are given.

▼ This project seeks to identify and describe mediation techniques that promote health and wellness for elders and their families who may have conflict and are looking for resolutions and to identify the gaps in services and resources. The identified end goal of this project is the development of a mediation curriculum that will improve the needs of elders and their families. The outcome of this project is the development of a curriculum that could potentially be offered as a training at the Senior Resource Center or Area 1 Agency on Aging- with the hopes of reaching out to the elder population who may be at a conflicting point in their life and are in need of mediating their own life issues, as well as conflicts with their families.
At the completion of this project, my hope is that through the curriculum I design that families of elders and elders themselves will be able to receive and enhance services and supports, combined with mediation techniques that can bring elders and their families together, rather than drive them apart, as the elder enters the final stage of his or her life journey. Elders can maintain their dignity and autonomy by being involved as much as possible in decision making in a private, informal setting, where the mediator will helpFamilies that turn to elder mediation can improve their relationships and shoe loving care for their parents.

▼ There have been few systematic experimental studies testing different restoration techniques in varying environments on the same property. The present experimental work was done to provide a basis for re-establishing sclerophyll forest on agricultural land located on the Tasman Peninsula. In determining appropriate habitat restoration goals it was necessary to reconstruct the original vegetation. Thus the first goal was to conduct a vegetation survey of the field site with the aim of identifying and mapping the vascular plant species and community types present. The results from the vegetation survey showed that the remnant vegetation consisted of sedgey Eucalyptus ovata woodland, shrubby E. obliqua forest and heathy E. obliqua/E. amygdalina forest and that the pasture consisted of five floristic communities dominated by exotic grasses. The environmental envelopes of the three native vegetation communities were then compared to those of the exotic vegetation communities. This process allowed the exotic species combinations to be used as analogues of the former distribution of the native vegetation communities.
The level of intervention that was required to promote the successful re-establishment of native vegetation was investigated. The sowing of native seeds resulted in poor germination of all native species, with the exception of Acacia verticillata and A. melanoxylon, with germination the greatest in unfenced areas where weed colonisation of gaps was slowest. The reintroduction of Eucalyptus and Allocasuarina seedlings into three different exotic weed communities demonstrated that soil properties had a greater influence on seedling survival and growth than competition from exotic weeds and that species did best on sites in which they would have naturally occurred.
In the field of restoration ecology there is little research on whether the simultaneous reintroduction of tree, shrub and groundcover species could accelerate forest restoration on agricultural land compared to plantings of single species. The results obtained from the field trial that examined the neighbour interactions of E. obliqua, Allocasuarina littoralis and Poa labillardierei showed that the presence of neighbours could promote greater seedling growth than that of individuals planted without neighbours. For A. littoralis and E. obliqua the greatest growth occurred when its neighbours were four A. littoralis seedlings, whilst the greatest growth by P. labillardierei occurred when its neighbours were a mixture of itself and E. obliqua. These results suggest that intra- and interspecific interactions can have a positive effect on the growth of the three species.
The field trials at the study site indicate that competition from weeds and lack of native seed storage limit the ability of native vegetation to re-establish on the abandoned pasture. Poor establishment from the sowing of native seeds onto gaps created in the grass sward illustrated the need to re-introduce seedlings to promote the restoration of native species in the exotic weed…

No capítulo 1, a leguminosa Balizia pedicellaris (DC.) A espécie Andira anthelmia (Vell.)
Many studies have been proving the importance of positive interactions to the distribution and diversity of species in plant communities. Positive and negative interactions occur simultaneously and the net effect of a species on another is the product of these combined interactions. The objetive of the present study was to evaluate if nitrogen fixing legumes facilitate other tree species in a nitrogen poor environment. We studied the effect of the presence of legumes on the density of species and individuals belonging to two different layers (DBH > 1 cm and 1≤ DBH ≥ 10 cm) around them and also patterns of spatial association between the legumes and other tree species, using a null models approach. The results obtained were dependent on the legume species considered. In chapter 1, the legume Balizia pedicellaris (DC.) Barneby & J.W.Grimes presented higher species density around it, for both layers, although there was no effect on the density of individuals. The species Ormosia arborea Harms did not present effect on the density of species and individuals around it. For the…

▼ Species invasions are increasing worldwide and are
impacting populations, communities, and ecosystems. Non-native
species that are ecosystem engineers, such as earthworms, may be
particularly likely to have large impacts due to their ability to
modify both biological and physical characteristics of their
environment. Using a combination of field and laboratory studies, I
examined above- and below-ground effects of non-native earthworms
in the boreal forest of Alberta. I found no evidence that earthworm
species facilitate each other’s invasions or have synergistic
effects, as would be expected in an invasional meltdown. In a
mesocosm experiment, the litter-dwelling earthworm Dendrobaena
octaedra and the deep-burrowing species Lumbricus terrestris did
not facilitate each other’s survival or reproduction. Similarly,
although the two earthworm species significantly influenced
microarthropod abundance, oribatid assemblage structure, and leaf
litter depths, they did not have synergistic effects. Further,
white spruce (Picea glauca) growth and colonization of white spruce
roots by mycorrhizal fungi were not affected. Earthworms impacted
other taxa via both direct trophic interactions and ecosystem
engineering. In laboratory experiments, changes in soil structure
associated with earthworm burrowing had strong effects on both
microarthropod movement and plant root growth. In contrast, a field
study indicated that distributions of American robins and
earthworms were strongly correlated, suggesting the two groups are
linked via predation of earthworms by robins. Although this
research indicates non-native earthworms are affecting a variety of
taxa in the boreal forest, there is limited awareness of earthworm
invasions among the public. Consequently, a combination of
increased research, public education, and regulations will likely
be needed to effectively manage earthworm invasions in
Alberta.

▼ At the center of all coach education initiatives and programming is the coach. Although the study of traditional coach education programs has yielded rather discouraging findings, coach education can be significant in its contribution to coach development when coaches are addressed as learners and their unique learning needs and orientations are recognized and prioritized. Indeed, the conversation has shifted to the application of learner-centered (LC) approaches. The purpose of this doctoral dissertation was twofold: to explore the contribution of using the LC theory, including a well-established learner-centered teaching (LCT) framework, to support coach education; and to examine the LC initiatives of a coach education program. An immersion in the LC literature was followed by the collection of multiple sources of data: program documents (n = 5), coach survey data, in-depth participant interviews (coach development administrators, n = 14; learning facilitators, n = 6; coaches, n = 10), and audio-visual material. Program documents (449 pages) were analyzed using a summative content analysis (Hsieh & Shannon, 2005) based on Blumberg’s (2009) LCT framework, and the interview transcripts (521 single-spaced pages) were analyzed using thematic analysis (Braun, Clarke, & Weate, 2016). The findings are presented in three articles and an additional findings section. The first article presents a theoretical overview of the LC literature linked to current perspectives and issues in coach education, including validated framework for facilitating LC change and assessment. The second article looks at the evolution and current LC status of Canada’s golf coach education program, a distinguished program within the Canadian sport system. The third article, using composite vignettes, presents the coaches’ and learning facilitators’ perception of their experiences participating in the LC designed program. In the additional findings, the CDAs’ biographies and perceptions of their experiences participating and contributing to the design of the program are presented along with the challenges they faced. The main points from the findings in this dissertation are as follows: (a) given the strong conceptual links and evidence-based foundation, LCT offers a coherent and sensible framework to guide the study and design of coach education; (b) there were lessons to be learned when looking at the history and evolution of the coach education program; (c) the creation and implementation of LC program benefitted from leaders who understood and subscribed to a constructivist view of learning; (d) the LCT approaches were dependent on the role and effectiveness of the learning facilitators; (e) coaches’ and facilitators’ perceptions of LCT approaches and engagement in the program varied according to their cognitive structures, specifically their learning orientation; and (f) more broadly, the program’s impact and effectiveness was influenced by the dynamic and complex interplay between the program design, delivery, and coach engagement. The findings…

▼ Main Objectives – Mycorrhizal fungi are ubiquitous plant mutualists and can be classified into two types: ecto- (EMF) - dominant in temperate forests and arbuscular (AMF) - globally dominant. Both types form mycorrhizal networks (MN), consisting of fungal hyphae that connect plants of the same and different species. The degree to which the MN of adult trees facilitate or inhibit other plants, specifically seedlings, is unclear. This study examines how the MN associated with different species of adult trees affect mycorrhizal colonization, growth, survival, and root fungal community of Quercus rubra seedlings, an EMF tree species.
Methods – Seedlings were planted under four adult tree species of varying mycorrhizal types: Q. rubra (EMF), Q. velutina (EMF), Carya glabra (EMF), and Acer saccharum (AMF). Before field transplant, two thirds of the seedlings were grown within micromesh bags that allow hyphae to pass while blocking roots. Seedlings were separated into treatment groups: no bag control (C), bagged control (BC), and disturbed (D). C and BC groups were transplanted and allowed to grow undisturbed. Seedlings in the D group had their connection to the MN disrupted every 2-3 days. Seedlings were collected at the end of the growing season and survival and biomass were recorded. A subset of the seedlings was examined for EMF colonization, and all colonized tips were collected. Collected tips had fungal DNA extracted, amplified, and sequenced to determine the EMF community present on the roots of the seedlings.
Results – Seedlings in the D treatment were colonized by a different suite of mycorrhizae than the two control groups, complicating interpretation of the effect of the MN on seedlings performance. Q. rubra seedlings benefited from MN connection when grown under con-specific and hetero-specific trees; but the effect of EMF colonization when connected to the MN was negative under C. glabra. Furthermore, under A. saccharum, seedlings benefited more from the EMF community that colonized the roots when they were disconnected, than from the EMF community when connected to the MN.
Conclusions – The findings in this study underline the importance of MNs in the recruitment of Q. rubra, a common canopy tree in the temperate forests of eastern North America. The effects are highly variable, ranging from
facilitation to inhibition, and vary on the species and mycorrhizal type associated with neighboring canopy trees. Overall, this study highlights the importance of the MN in structuring temperate forest ecosystems.

▼ The respiratory system is attentive, adaptive, learns and has memory. The respiratory system remembers repeated respiratory challenges to fine tune its motor activity by modulating neuronal synaptic strength. This phenomenon, respiratory long term facilitation (LTF), functions to strengthen the ability of respiratory motor neurons to enhance contraction of breathing muscles. LTF could serve as a protective mechanism against obstructive sleep apnea, a disease characterized by the collapse of upper airways, by restoring upper airway patency. LTF can be induced through modulation of vagal afferent feedback via repeated apneas. Here, we used reverse microdialysis, electrophysiology, neuropharmacology, and histology to determine if the nucleus of the solitary tract (NTS), a brain region exclusively receiving vagal afferents, is the origin of the neural circuit responsible for apnea-induced plasticity. My work shows bilateral injection of 5% lidocaine into the NTS prevented LTF. We conclude the NTS is required for triggering apnea-induced LTF.
