13. Cabral, Erica Falcato. Galega vulgar.

Degree: 2009, Technical University of Lisbon

Mestrado em Engenharia Agronómica - Instituto Superior de Agronomia

The effect of boron application in flower quality and olive, cv. Galega vulgar fruit set, and the efficiency of different types of pollination: open, self and controlled pollination, were tested in a hedge olive orchard in Santarém. In the boron experiment, 0 mg, 512 mg and 1024 mg of boron was applied in April. Pollen of the cultivars ‘Blanqueta’, ‘Cordovil’, ‘Cobrançosa’, ‘Picual’ and ‘Arbequina’ was collected and used in cross pollinations experiment. The application of different levels of boron had no effect neither in the flower quality nor in the fruit set, possibly due to the boron deficiency that the trees presented which was not suppressed with the boron application. Fruit set wasn’t statistically different when the different cultivars were used to pollinate cv. Galega. The fruit set was superior with open pollination when compared with controlled pollination, since the microperforated plastic bags that were used have proved to be inadequate due to lack of moisture permeability. Fruit set in open pollination, was 93.6 fruits per 100 inflorescences and 55.8 fruits per 100 inflorescences in June and July, respectively, corresponding to fruit set rates of 5.5% and 3.3%, respectively. Pollen germination and pollen viability rates were between 2% and 7%.
