▼ Revenue Management (RM) is the practice of managing perishable assets by control-ling their availability and/or prices with an objective to maximize the total revenue. Seat inventory allocation falls in the purview of quantity-based RM. The liberalization of the aviation sector and the subsequent entrance of the low-cost carriers saw an ever-increasing customer base for the airline industry. Given the large number of buyers, firms were free to decide the price at which they would sell tickets. The low-cost carriers started to follow a third degree price discrimination and segmentation of the market, charging a higher price to the market with a relatively inelastic demand. Although a lot of work has been done in the area of seat inventory allocation under a monopolistic market scenario, we realized that not a lot of work had been done in a competitive market scenario. This thesis considers the problem of seat inventory allocation and pricing in a duopoly where each of the competing airlines have two fare-classes. We consider the possibility that the same fare-class may be priced differently by the two competing airlines and allow for the over flow of passengers between the airlines in the same fare-class. In the first part of our work, we develop a non-linear mathematical model for setting the booking limits for one of the two competing air-lines such that the revenue earned is maximized. We consider over flow of passengers from one airline to another in the same fare-class in response to a price differential and compare the results obtained from our model with the standard Expected Marginal Seat Revenue (EMSR) model under a monopolistic scenario. The results show that our model gives higher revenues than that obtained from the EMSR model. In the second part of our work, we consider a non-cooperative game between two competing airlines with price cutting as the strategy to increase their demand. Through numerical computations, we identify the pure strategy Nash equilibrium. From the results, we conclude that Nash equilibrium is achieved only when both the airlines follow the same pricing strategy indicating that individual price cutting will not be beneficial. This also indicates that unless the competitors enter into a cooperative coalition with each other, they would not benefit from deep discount offers. In the third and final part, we prove theoretically the existence of pure strategy Nash equilibrium in a two airline, two fare-class problem with price sensitive over flow of customers in the same fare-class that was computationally analysed earlier. The strategy / strategies at which Nash equilibrium is achieved are identified. We show that Nash equilibrium is only achieved when both the airlines price identically. Hence, our thesis concludes that differential pricing does not hold any significance for the competing airlines from an operational perspective. ▼ This thesis investigates the revenue management (RM) problem encountered in an airport carpark of finite capacity, where the available parking spaces should be sold optimally in advance in order to maximise the revenues on a given day. Customer demand is stochastic, where random pre-booking times and stay lengths overlap with each other, a setting that generates strong inter-dependence among consecutive days and hence leads to a complex network optimisation problem. Several mathematical models are introduced to approximate the problem; a model based on a discrete-time formulation which is solved using Monte Carlo (MC) simulations and two single-resource models, the first based on a stochastic process and the other on a deterministic one, both developed in continuous-time that lead to a partial differential equation (PDE). The optimisation for the spaces is based on the expected displacement costs which are then used in a bid-price control mechanism to optimise the value of the carpark. Numerical tests are conducted to examine the methods’ performance under the network setting. Taking into account the methods’ efficiency, the computation times and the resulting expected revenues, the stochastic PDE approach is shown to be the preferable method. Since the pricing structure among operators varies, an adjusted model based on the stochastic PDE is derived in order to facilitate the solution applicable in all settings. Further, for large carparks facing high demand levels, an alternative second-order PDE model is proposed. Finally, an attempt to incorporate more information about the network structure and the inter-dependence between consecutive days leads to a weighted PDE scheme. Given a customer staying on day T, a weighting kernel is introduced to evaluate the conditional probability of stay on a neighbouring day. Then a weighted average is applied on the expected marginal values over all neighbouring days. The weighted PDE scheme shows significant improvement in revenue for small-size carparks. The use of the weighted PDE opens the possibility for new ways to approximate network RM problems and thus motivates further research in this direction.

▼ Commercial airlines use revenue management systems to maximize their revenue by making real-time decisions on the prices and booking limits of different fare products and classes offered in each of its scheduled flights. Traditional approaches — such as mathematical programming, dynamic programming and heuristic rule-based decision models — heavily rely on mathematical models of demand and passenger arrival, choice and cancellation, making their performance sensitive to the accuracy of these model estimates. Moreover, many of these approaches scale poorly with increase in problem dimensionality. Additionally, they lack the ability to explore and “directly” learn the true market dynamics from interactions with passengers and adapt to changes in market conditions on their own. To overcome these limitations, this research uses deep reinforcement learning (DRL), a model-free decision-making framework, for finding the optimal policies of seat inventory control and dynamic pricing problems. The DRL framework employs a deep neural network to approximate the expected optimal revenues for all possible state-action combinations, allowing it to handle the large state spaces of the problems. Multiple fare classes with stochastic demand, passenger arrivals and booking cancellations, and overbooking have been considered in the problems. An air travel market simulator was developed based on the market dynamics and passenger behavior for training and testing the agent. The results demonstrate that the DRL agent is capable of learning the optimal airline revenue management policy through interactions with the market, matching the performance of exact dynamic programming methods. The performance of the agent in different simulated market scenarios was found to be close to the theoretical optimal revenues and superior to that of the expected marginal seat revenue-b (EMSRb) method. Also, when faced with market perturbations, the DRL agent has been observed to actively learn to change its policy to maximize revenue in the new environment, demonstrating its ability to adapt to changes in the market conditions.

▼ To date, the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) has undergone an excessive amount of reforms including topics such as student-athlete well-being, academics, enforcement, resource allocation, and so forth. However, despite the constant stream of policy reforms there has been a significant lack of effective reform initiatives with reference to the economic state of the NCAA. This void is partially due to the lack of sufficient empirical evidence surrounding the economic discussion of college athletics, specifically in regards to the discussion of the potential for performance based compensation for student-athletes. Past research for such compensation has focused primarily on large revenue producing sports such as football and men’s basketball (Brown, 1993; 2011; Brown & Jewell, 2006). However, by only examining two of the almost ninety NCAA recognized sports it has created a large gap in the literature necessary to examine things further. Considering this, the current research intends to expand the scope of the literature by using an econometrics approach to investigate the current state of the NCAA non-revenue producing sport of swimming. The research uses public NCAA economic revenue and expenditure reports from the years 2010-2016 to create a revenue function and conduct a multiple regression analysis. The attempt of such research is to determine the marginal revenue product (MRP) and economic value of a Division I swimmer. The final results find that there is a significant relationship between certain MRP determining variables on swim program revenue and expenses. However, not all variables in the revenue function are found to be significant thus it helps to open the door for future research to investigate the MRP of non-revenue generating sports to create a more elaborate picture of the true impact different variables can have on revenue and expenditures of NCAA athletic programs. ▼ This thesis investigates the revenue management (RM) problem encountered inan airport carpark of finite capacity, where the available parking spaces should besold optimally in advance in order to maximise the revenues on a given day. Customerdemand is stochastic, where random pre-booking times and stay lengthsoverlap with each other, a setting that generates strong inter-dependence amongconsecutive days and hence leads to a complex network optimisation problem.Several mathematical models are introduced to approximate the problem; a modelbased on a discrete-time formulation which is solved using Monte Carlo (MC) simulationsand two single-resource models, the first based on a stochastic processand the other on a deterministic one, both developed in continuous-time thatlead to a partial differential equation (PDE). The optimisation for the spaces isbased on the expected displacement costs which are then used in a bid-price con-trol mechanism to optimise the value of the carpark.Numerical tests are conducted to examine the methods’ performance under thenetwork setting. Taking into account the methods’ efficiency, the computationtimes and the resulting expected revenues, the stochastic PDE approach is shownto be the preferable method.Since the pricing structure among operators varies, an adjusted model based onthe stochastic PDE is derived in order to facilitate the solution applicable in allsettings. Further, for large carparks facing high demand levels, an alternativesecond-order PDE model is proposed.Finally, an attempt to incorporate more information about the network structureand the inter-dependence between consecutive days leads to a weighted PDEscheme. Given a customer staying on day T, a weighting kernel is introducedto evaluate the conditional probability of stay on a neighbouring day. Then aweighted average is applied on the expected marginal values over all neighbouringdays. The weighted PDE scheme shows significant improvement in revenue forsmall-size carparks. The use of the weighted PDE opens the possibility for newways to approximate network RM problems and thus motivates further researchin this direction. ▼ Dynamics on large networks can be highly complex. I present several methods for investigating the effects of network structure/statistics on rate dynamics and spike correlations. The dynamical models under consideration come from computational neuroscience, but these methods may generalize to other contexts. The thesis focuses on both network constructions and dynamics on networks.I present two approaches to network constructions: random networks, and networks with patterns. For random networks, I give a generalization of the expected degree model (EDM) and a formulation of the EDM and its generalization which is invariant of the number of nodes. This generalization allows one to produce random networks which have nontrivial second and third order correlations among edges. I also introduce a method for constructing networks with nontrivial structures/patterns at multiple scales. I investigate the spectral properties of the resulting networks and extend the method to include stochastic elements.The singular value decomposition (SVD) is a powerful tool with many applications. I review its application to network adjacency matrices, including a known result which relates the singular values of an adjacency matrix to a measure of its randomness. Further, I demonstrate that for several random network models the degree sequence is the most significant feature of the connectivity.The primary dynamical model I consider is the Poisson spiking model (PSM). I derive first and second order statistics for the PSM using a path integral formalism.The major contribution of this work is a dimension reduction method for dynamics on a network using the SVD. I demonstrate how one can use these low rank representations of the connectivity, together with the reduced equations to approximately recover node-specific activity. Thus, not only do I present methods that reduce the number of dynamical variables, but I show how the dynamics of the full system may be decomposed into the reduced variables and network structure.

▼ Consumers’ associate higher prices with higher levels of quality. Nevertheless, the relationship between price and objective quality (i.e., real quality) in the marketplace is not always strong or even positive. This seemingly paradoxical phenomenon could be explained by either consumers’ lack of access to the product information (which is unlikely as we live in the age of information) or their reluctance/inability to assimilate the available information and modify their price-quality judgments. The current research is built on this latter assumption and attempts to answer two substantive questions that remain to be fully addressed in the pricing literature: First, how can we alter consumers’ price-quality judgments? Second, what is the effect of gender on consumers’ price-quality perceptions? Essay 1 attempted to answer these questions using 12 main studies that employed survey research, experimental research, and observational research methods to achieve methodological triangulation. Samples included a student sample, adult samples, and real-world data and varied from 72 respondents to 222,600 product/day observations in size. Cumulative evidence in Essay 1 suggested that provoking suspicion against a specific brand could undermine consumers’ reliance on price to judge the quality of that brand. Whereas, activating persuasion knowledge is likely to elicit a general suspicion against marketing and subsequently increase consumers’ tendency to make price-quality judgments. Furthermore, Essay 1 offered empirical evidence that gender influences consumers’ thinking style, price-quality perceptions, and the actual prices that they pay for comparable products in the marketplace. Given the counterintuitive findings in Essay 1 regarding the positive effect of persuasion knowledge on consumers’ tendency to make inaccurate price-quality judgments, Essay 2 attempted to explore the underpinning mechanisms of the persuasion knowledge. In Essay 2, the author synthesized the extant literature on persuasion knowledge and proposed an integrative, process-based framework of consumers’ persuasion knowledge (CPK). This framework points out the key role that emotions play in the development and activation processes of persuasion knowledge, which is likely to account for the counterintuitive effect of persuasion knowledge on the accuracy of the price-quality perceptions. ▼ Dynamic testing plays an important part in the vehicle seat suspension study. However, a large amount of research work on vibration control of vehicle seat suspension to date has been limited to simulations because the use of a full-size vehicle to test the device is an expensive and dangerous task. In order to decrease the product development time and cost as well as to improve the design quality, in this research, a vibration generation platform is developed for simulating the road induced vehicle vibration in laboratory. Different from existing driving simulation platforms, this research focuses on the vehicle chassis vibration simulation and the control of motion platform to make sure the platform can more accurately generate the actual vehicle vibration movement. A seven degree-of-freedom (DOF) full-vehicle model with varying road inputs is used to simulate the real vehicle vibration. Moreover, because the output vibration data of the vehicle model is all about the absolute heave, pitch and roll velocities of the sprung mass, in order to simulate the vibration in all dimensions, a Stewart multiple-DOF motion platform is designed to generate the required vibration. As a result, the whole vibration simulator becomes a hardware-in-the-loop (HIL) system. The hardware consists of a computer used to calculate the required vibration signals, a Stewart platform used to generate the real movement, and a controller used to control the movement of the platform and implemented by a National Instruments (NI) CompactRIO board. The data, which is from the vehicle model, can be converted into the length of the six legs of the Stewart platform. Therefore, the platform can transfer into the same posture as the real vehicle chassis at that moment. The success of the developed platform is demonstrated by HIL experiments of actuators. As there are six actuators installed in the motion platform, the signals from six encoders are used as the feedback signals for the control of the length of the actuators, and advanced control strategies are developed to control the movement of the platform to make sure the platform can accurately generate the required motion even in heavy load situations. Theoretical study is conducted on how to generate the reasonable vibration signals suitable for vehicle seat vibration tests in different situations and how to develop advanced control strategies for accurate control of the motion platform. Both simulation and experimental studies are conducted to validate the proposed approaches.

▼ The Institute of Medicine identified comparing the effectiveness of renal replacement therapies as the only kidney-disease related topic among the top 100 initial national priorities for comparative effectiveness research. The median life expectancy of patients starting renal replacement therapy is only a little over three years and they spend on average 12 days in the hospital annually. The overwhelming majority of patients are treated with thrice-weekly in-center hemodialysis(TWICHD). However, an increasingly larger number of patients are being treated alternate dialysis modalities, including nocturnal in-center hemodialysis (NICHD), which is a modified hemodialysis regimen that include significantly longer treatment times. As such, it is critically important to perform a rigorous assessment of the benefit, if any, conferred by NICHD. In this thesis, we present a careful analysis of a large cohort from a retrospective study of dialysis modalities in the US, using marginal structural Cox models. The data set consists of 208,820 patients who initiated dialysis between January 1, 2007- December 31, 2011 at facilities owned by Davita corporation. Prior to presenting the data analysis, we provide a overview of the relevant concepts from the theory of the counterfactual model and causal inference, and discuss marginal structural models for binary as well as time to event outcomes. For the primary analysis, we estimated the causal hazard ratio comparing the risk of death if patients received NICHD as opposed to TWICHD through their follow-up, contrary to their observed treatment history using a pre-specified marginal structural Cox model. We found that those who were treated with NICHD had a substantial reduction in their risk of death. We also performed a series of sensitivity analyses to assess the effect of potential sources of bias which were not accounted for in the primary analysis. We found that our main result was robust to these potential sources of bias. In addition, using a bootstrap procedure, we also investigated the effect of the parametric assumptions we made on the precision of our estimates. We found that the model we used provided a substantial gain in precision of our estimate of the causal effect of NICHD on survival. Advisors/Committee Members: Rice, Ken (advisor).

In this report we applied the marginal structural model and the naive Cox model on a simulated dataset, in order to find differences between these models. The marginal structural model is used to estimate causal effects in case of time-dependent confounding via inverse probability weights. The naive Cox model may produce a bias estimate of the causal effect, because it cannot correct for this time-dependent confounding. In the simulation study we saw that the estimated effect of treatment was different for both models. In some situations the models gave different conclusions, which could lead to a wrong decision in a real problem. We also applied the marginal structural model on `The Netherlands Cooperative Study on the Adequacy of Dialysis' (NECOSAD). Patients that participated on this study all have a chronic kidney disease. Because of kidney failure, these patients could suffer from anemia. In order to correct for this, they are treated with Erythropoiesis-Stimulating Agents (ESA). We compared treatment in dialysis patients with no/low ESA dose versus treatment with high ESA dose. We want to estimate the causal effect of treatment on survival. We used the marginal structural model, because Hb is a time-dependent confounder in this dataset. We saw an increased risk of mortality for the 'High ESA dose' patients in our analysis of 58%. This suggests that treatment with high ESA dose increases the risk of death. So treatment with high ESA dose is harmful according to our marginal structural model. At the moment, there is no strict protocol for doctors for when to start treatment. If treatment with high ESA dose is harmful it would be better to expose patients as short as possible to high doses. So we want to find the optimal regime to start treatment. This can be done by applying the dynamic marginal structural model. This model compares different regimes, such that we can find the regime which has the smallest causal effect on mortality. For this analysis we define different regimes of starting treatment. For instance, one regime could be `start treatment once the Hb level is below 10 g/dL'. With the dynamic marginal structural model we can compare these different regimes to find the best moment to treat. In our real data analysis we compared 6 regimes to find the best moment to treat based on Hb level. We applied the dynamic marginal structural Cox model and regime 3, initiate treatment with high ESA dose when Hb-level first drops below 11 g/dL, showed the best results.

▼ In this thesis, we develop some Bayesian sparse learning methods for high dimensional data analysis. There are two important topics that are related to the idea of sparse learning – variable selection and factor analysis. We start with Bayesian variable selection problem in regression models. One challenge in Bayesian variable selection is to search the huge model space adequately, while identifying high posterior probability regions. In the past decades, the main focus has been on the use of Markov chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) algorithms for these purposes. In the first part of this thesis, instead of using MCMC, we propose a new computational approach based on sequential Monte Carlo (SMC), which we refer to as particle stochastic search (PSS). We illustrate PSS through applications to linear regression and probit models. Besides the Bayesian stochastic search algorithms, there is a rich literature on shrinkage and variable selection methods for high dimensional regression and classification with vector-valued parameters, such as lasso (Tibshirani, 1996) and the relevance vector machine (Tipping, 2001). Comparing with the Bayesian stochastic search algorithms, these methods does not account for model uncertainty but are more computationally efficient. In the second part of this thesis, we generalize this type of ideas to matrix valued parameters and focus on developing efficient variable selection method for multivariate regression. We propose a Bayesian shrinkage model (BSM) and an efficient algorithm for learning the associated parameters . In the third part of this thesis, we focus on the topic of factor analysis which has been widely used in unsupervised learnings. One central problem in factor analysis is related to the determination of the number of latent factors. We propose some Bayesian model selection criteria for selecting the number of latent factors based on a graphical factor model. As it is illustrated in Chapter 4, our proposed method achieves good performance in correctly selecting the number of factors in several different settings. As for application, we implement the graphical factor model for several different purposes, such as covariance matrix estimation, latent factor regression and classification. ▼ INTRODUCTION: Diabetes Mellitus (DM) is one of the fastest growing and most costly chronic diseases in the United States. DM is severely underdiagnosed, resulting in increased complications, costs, and mortality. Primary goals of the Affordable Care Act (ACA) were to increase health insurance coverage and access to care, and to improve chronic disease outcomes. However, the effects of the legislation have not been widely studied, particularly the relationship between proper diabetes diagnosis and a variety of health related factors. AIM: Determine the relationship between DM prevalence and under-diagnosis, to healthcare utilization, usual source of care, insurance, type of insurance, and population characteristics have changed since the implementation of the ACA. METHODS: Data collected between 2005 and 2016 in the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey were used for this work. The Andersen behavioral health model was used as a theoretical framework and selection of study variables. Descriptive statistics and advanced statistical modeling techniques were applied. Distinct multilevel models were used to model the logit of the probability of DM and the logit of the probability of a proper DM diagnosis each as a function of study variables with an indicator of pre- or post-ACA included as a fixed effect. Marginal models are multilevel models that apply population averaged estimates for parameters. Marginal models were specified to account for clustering by time, and generalized estimating equations used to estimate model parameters. The quasi-likelihood under the null (QIC) statistic was estimated for model comparisons. The SAS Software System was used for data analysis and the level of significance set at .05. RESULTS: The sample consisted of 31,225 participants, with half pre-ACA (n=15,612) and half post-ACA. Females comprised 51.64% of the study sample with 43.50% White, 25.82% Hispanic, and 20.65% Black and a mean (standard deviation) age of 49.3 (17.9) years. About 11.45% of those in the Pre ACA period had a diagnosis of DM, while 13.5% of those in the Post ACA period had a diagnosis of DM. The percentage of uninsured was 23.95% in the Pre ACA period and 20.69% in the Post ACA time period. The prevalence of undiagnosed DM patients was 26.7% before the ACA, and 21.3% after. A multilevel model with DM status as the dependent outcome showed that sex (females vs males: OR=0.83, 95%CI=0.78,0.89,p =.02), USC (yes vs no: OR=1.28, 95%CI=1.03,1.59, p=.03), health insurance (yes vs no: OR=1.21, 95%CI=1.17,1.26, p =.02), and education level(college graduate vs less than high school: OR=0.79, 95%CI=0.64,0.97, p=.05, high school graduate vs less than high school: OR=0.97, 95%CI=0.93,1.03, p=.05) were significantly associated with presence of DM. ▼ International Financial Reporting Standard 9 (IFRS 9) will be implemented January 1, 2018. Due to its approaching, the competent authorities and Financial institutions concernover the potential impacts and commence to take the appropriate actions. Most financial institutions are not fully aware of the influences to be ocurred after IFRS9 Implementation. They either have not yet commenced to execute the required actions, the related system construction planning and employee training for the IFRS 9 introduction or the progress of these actions are very slow. It is worth of exploring the factors for causing these. In addition, the IFRS4 amendment released by the IASB in December 2015 causes that the Insurance companies face two different Effective dates for IFRS 9 and IFRAS 4 Phase II, respectively. This study explores the inconsistencies caused by different effective dates of these two standards in accounting valuation of assets and liabilities, analyses the impacts after IFRS 9 implementation and the alternative approaches in the transition of IFRS 9 and IFRAS 4 Phase II, one is deferral approach under IFRS 9 and the other one is overlay approach for IFRS 9/IAS 39. This study hence explores the potential impacts on profit/loss and capital needs and the influences on the investment strategies and assets and liabilities management for the financial institutions under the reform of international financial reporting standards, considering the nature of banking and insurance companies is based on employing financial instruments as major business items and if they apply theãExpected Credit Losses modelãto evaluate loss on impairment of financial assets. This study explores the potentail impacts on various aspects for the financial institutions when they apply theãExpected Credit Losses modelãto evaluate loss on impairment of financial assets in order to enable them to adjust their strategies to respond to major changes in accounting recognition and appraisal of financial instruments and to minimize the impacts as earlier as possible. U savremenom bankarstvu evidentira se sve šira primena modela merenja kreditnog rizika zasnovanih na rangiranju prema utvrđenom kreditnom kvalitetu. Sa tim se nameće i potreba među korisnicima da se razume ekonomska vrednost i opravdanost primene modela i da se isti integrišu u tradicionalne prakse kreditiranja na profitabilan način, što može da bude zahtevno. Osnovni cilj istraživanja je da se razvije empirijski prikladan savremen metodološki okvir procesa validacije modela kreditnog rizika, kao bazičnog segmenta sistema upravljanja kreditnim rizikom za primenu u bankaskoj industriji, a kroz jednostavne, ali moćne, kvantitativne modele izgrađene na realnim podacima iz raspoložive baze podataka. Usled razvoja finansijskog tržišta u našoj zemlji, a imajući u vidu činjenicu da bankarsko poslovanje na tržištima u razvoju kao što je naše, predpostavlja preuzimanje visokih rizika, a primarno kreditnog, adekvatna procena izloženosti istom se mora smatrati empirijskom potrebom finansijskih institucija. Kroz disertaciju je utvrđeno da je i u uslovima ograničene baze podataka, što je često razlog za odustajanje od razvoja bilo kakvog kvantitativnog modela obračuna kreditnog rizika, moguće kreirati model i izvršiti validaciju istog kroz primenu statistički zasnovanih testova. Pokazano je da se rezultati istog u pogledu parametara rizika mogu da imaju široku primenu u procesu upravljanja kreditnim rizikom u finansijskim institucijama. Ovo je posebno bitno u kontekstu značajnijih regulatornih zahteva u pogledu tretmana rizika u bankarskom poslovanju i podsticaja za primenu kvantitativnih modela. Disertacija u tom kontekstu može da bude koristan izvor, kako onima koji se ovom problematikom bave na naučnoj osnovi, tako i onima koji su u finansijskim institucijama zaduženi za uspostavljanje i validaciju modela merenja i upravljanja kreditnim rizikom.
