▼ One of the fastest growing trends in exhibitions is the utilization of immersive technology displays (hereafter, ???immersive displays???), which provide an enhanced level of user interaction and allow visitors to have new and dynamic experiences. While the majority of existing studies focus on exploring technical designs for immersive displays, there are a limited number of studies that examine whether there exists a correlative relationship between an exhibitor???s use of immersive display technology and the satisfaction of
exhibition attendees who experience the same. The purpose of this study is to examine the relationship between exhibitors??? immersive displays and
exhibition attendees??? satisfaction. Specifically, this study will investigate
exhibition attendees??? perceptions of the attributes of immersive displays and their respective impact on attendees??? overall satisfaction.
The results reveal a pronounced impact, as over 75% of respondents answered positively to their experiences with interacting with immersive technology. Analysis of data collected from attendees also revealed the relationships between aspects of immersive displays and various demographics. This study seeks to examine such data to contribute to
exhibition research on how exhibitors should prepare their
exhibition displays to enhance the experiences of attendees by utilizing the various types of immersive displays.

Over the last ten years I have found myself repeatedly drawing a set of organic forms. In recent years this set of forms has developed into a type of language that quotes itself over and over again through the repetition of shapes, mark-making and translation through line. Though at first unconscious, drawing these amoeba-or cell-like structures that repeat, grow, and change has become a compulsive act that is a way of attempting to make the unseen pathogens that I fear visible and tangible. The exhibition, Drawn Out of Fear: Parasites and Compulsions, is an opportunity to make this compulsion intentional and beneficial in allowing me to examine and make sense of this need so that I may better understand that which I fear and to learn to gain a sense of control over that fear through my actions. My drawings provide a sense of relief that aids in keeping that fear in check. This sense of relief is achieved through a type of exorcism of these forms. Their release through the act of drawing calms my mind through a controlled outlet that prevents me from becoming overwhelmed.
In this project, from which the exhibition Drawn Out of Fear: Parasites and Compulsions is derived, I have set out a series of parameters; a system for examining and understanding my fear of the parasitic and need to visualize that fear on a daily basis. The first goal of this project is to chronicle and document my personal responses to items I perceive to have a parasitic reference in my environment over the span of one year beginning on October 21st of 2010. This documentation takes two forms: First, through the formation of a database of photographs and found imagery taken from my immediate environment showing the items that I perceived to have a parasitic reference, second through the development of a series of small-scale drawings responding to the item I found to have a parasitic reference. This series of drawings is a type of visual diary tracking my obsession and compulsion to draw these forms on a daily basis. To find an item to have a parasitic reference it can either be a literal reference or, can be inspired through the form, function or multiplicity of the item. While the first goal of this project is to document the items in my environment that I perceive to have a parasitic reference, the second goal of this project is to examine the relationship between the nature of fear itself and how it relates to the idea of the parasitic. I propose that fear in itself takes on a parasitic nature once it has infected the human psyche. The third and final goal of this project is to ascertain whether it is possible to gain control over my fear.

The thesis installation entitled "Owarinaki Michi: Ka Huaka'i Palena 'Ole" was presented at the Haigo and Irene Shen Architecture Gallery at the University of Hawaiʻi School of Architecture from April 1-12, 2013. "Owarinaki Michi: Ka Huakaʻi Palena 'Ole" depicts my journey to connect with both my native and adopted cultures. Through this process, I have come to realize how precious the beauty of nature is by cleansing negative emotion from my mind in order to absorb mana, a source of life, into my body. The English equivalent of these Japanese and Hawaiian phrases is "The Never-Ending Journey." In this exhibition, my purpose was to depict a connection between both the Japanese and Hawaiian cultures, each of which respects the bond between nature and humanity. Japanese people express this through the spirit of Shintoism, whereas Hawaiians express it through the spirit of mana.
In the exhibition, the salt spiral represents a journey to discover my Japanese roots through the lens of the Hawaiian culture. The path is ritually drawn by hand-sprinkling salt three times into mound-shaped piles. This process metaphorically purifies the body, emotions and spirit while preserving knowledge from experiences. The structure of the roots refers to my own experiences and knowledge acquired through the course of my life, while the luminosity of the glass refers to spiritual power and strength that can be obtained from nature. Tying individual roots together symbolizes the establishment of self-awareness; the experiences and knowledge of the past joining together to create a complex tapestry continuing into the future. The journey of awareness will never end if there is hope that drives a person forward. My intent was to present a path through one such journey.

▼ Picasso’s work Guernica is one the most well known paintings of the twentieth century and probably the most influential icon of Spanish art history.
As soon as Guernica commenced its public life, being presented in the Spanish Pavilion at the Paris World Fair in 1937, its progression in meaning of the artwork began. In this thesis I intend to explore how, through different exhibitions and collections from museums and galleries in which it was displayed, Guernica was able to shape, in one or another way, its history as one of the world’s icons of universal modern art. How did the exhibitions in which Guernica took part helped to shape its political meaning? Moreover, I would like to explore how artworks can be shaped by their surroundings.
Accordingly, I endeavour to examine how the display of Guernica in different surroundings has shaped its meaning since its presentation at Paris World Fair in 1937, with attention being placed on the entire context of each
exhibition. Central to this thesis is Guernica’s legacy: the meaning which it had in past exhibitions, its meaning in the present and its meaning for contemporary artists. selecting Goshka Macuga’s The Nature of the Beast (2009) as a case study.

▼ This project report describes the process of the development of an evaluation process for family exhibitions in the Maritime Museum Rotterdam. It is focusing on collecting qualitative feedback from families, consisting out of children between 8 and 12 years old and their parent or grandparents. The Maritime Museum Rotterdam has various interactive exhibitions which learn their visitors about the maritime world. The museum was looking for a way to get qualitative feedback from their visitors about these exhibitions. The museum wants to learn what contributes to or deducts a positive experience of their exhibitions, so they can create even more inspiring exhibitions in the future. The assignment for this project is to design a tool-box, containing all elements needed to conduct a successful qualitative evaluation of a family exhibition. The Sea monster exhibition in the Maritime Museum was chosen to be a test-case for this project. During the project, several methods for gaining feedback were explored. It was decided to build an evaluation process around the concept of a heat-map which shows what areas visitors do or don’t like. The method that was chosen to collect the data to create the heat-map is experience sampling. During the exhibition visit, visitors are asked to give a small sample of feedback. They can do this by pressing a smiley that indicates how much they like what they are doing or seeing at that moment on a special developed tracking device. This device also keeps track of the location of the visitors. A line, showing the route of the visitors and the given feedback samples will be created from this information. For this concept, a framework of the evaluation process was created. In this framework, two tracks were distinguished. One track, called version 1 in this project, collects the route and feedback samples of over a hundred visitors. An interactive stand will ask automated questions based on this data. The other track, called version 2 in this project, only involves five families. A heat-map is created for each family member and based on the heat-map an interview is held. A process poster was developed which shows all steps of both tracks. However, the focus during the project was on this last track, version 2. The tracking device (the tool), the interview, and the analysis and communication of version 2 were developed further. Several tests were done to find the characteristic the portable tracking device should meet to collect the right data to create a heat-map that can be used to structure the interview. In the final design, a working prototype of the tracking device was created. Besides that, an interview guide was developed containing all information needed to conduct an interview, based on the heat-map. Lastly, all steps of the analysis and communication were distinguished and finding-cards were designed To validate the concept, various tests were done to evaluate the evaluation process.

▼ This dissertation examines an aspect of colonial history little known outside academic circles: the ethnographic exhibition, predominantly in Europe and America, of living people promoted as being from far-away lands, “exotic” or “savage”. Although research in the last two decades by Poignant, Blanchard, Boëtsch, Bancel, Thode-Arora, Qureshi and others has gathered important historical material about such exhibitions and their role in the construction of racial stereotypes, there remain significant gaps in the record – namely, as Qureshi describes, the paucity of “sources that might be used to reconstruct performers’ motivations and perceptions” (9). There also exist gaps in the creative literature, with only a handful of novels having been published that refer to this subject, although not in an Australian context. Such novels include Dominic Smith’s Bright and Distant Shores and Didier Daeninckx’s Cannibale. The focus of this dissertation is the exhibition and representation of Australian Aboriginal performers in Europe and America in the late nineteenth century when “human zoos” became mass entertainment. The thesis explores how fiction informed by postcolonial theory might be used to highlight knowledge gaps, challenge racial constructions, and reposition the performers’ possible experiences more centrally. Through a novel, Paris Savages, it investigates imaginative ways of deconstructing the version of history that exists in the archives, particularly constructed ideas of the objectified “other” as “inferior” and “savage”. With a focus on three Badtjala performers in Europe, Paris Savages attempts to re-historicise this historical episode by inviting the reader to imagine a more balanced telling. Without first-person performer accounts, it is, of course, impossible to know what the Aboriginal performers each made of this experience. However, I argue that an informed and overtly imaginative approach, inclusive of Aboriginal characters, is a necessary step towards contesting the racial stereotypes the shows produced for, without such attempts at “rewriting race and racism, not merely representing, but disturbing [it]” (Hopper), societies born of colonialism will remain locked in their limited histories. Indeed, without re-examining stories that have been half told, “the ‘field’ of the genuinely post-colonial can never actually exist” (Slemon 79).

▼ This research project presents a methodological and theoretical framework for conducting research on the knowledge-making capacity of museum displays in Ireland. As active agents in the production of knowledge, museum displays have been increasingly accepted as documents of significance to the evolution of ideas. In order to investigate how exhibitions create knowledge, a detailed outline of the key attributes involved in creating meaning in exhibitions will be offered. Building on research in
exhibition analysis and the history of display and representation in Ireland, this research will emphasise how there is a complex network of factors that warrant consideration when assessing the epistemological function of museums in Ireland.
To achieve its aims and objectives, this research project will develop a number of case studies using exhibitions as the primary site or unit of exchange in the political economy of art and art history for the production and dissemination of knowledge by adopting Du Gay et al 'Circuit of Culture' model of communication as the analytical vehicle presenting exhibitions as textual' entities in order to clarify how exhibited culture, what museums put on display, and
exhibition culture, the ideas, values, and symbols that permeate and shape the practice of exhibiting, interact. Based on these principles, the aim of this research project is to formulate terms and questions that can be applied both to exhibited culture and to
exhibition culture such as: how and why is it that museums select and arrange artefacts, shape knowledge, and construct a view? What is this view and how does it articulate with wider social perspectives? How do museums produce values? How does this change? And how do active audiences make meaning from what they experience in museums?
The date range will offer the opportunity of contextualising these questions in relation to fundamental changes in the creation of cultural policy and cultural practice in Ireland from the influence of European cultural strategies as a result of Ireland joining the European Union and the introduction of the Arts Act in Ireland in 1973. This period also marked the beginning of the widespread re-examination of the role of museums within society during the 1970s, to the challenges presented by the globalist aspect of art and the cultural collisions in Irish life during the 1990s: between the local and global, between traditional and modern, between Catholic and secular, and between rural and urban.
This research project intends to position itself at the intersection of theory and practices, also offering a much-needed critical attention and analysis to a
subject that has been largely overlooked from an Irish perspective as well as posing a model of analysis where research results could be transferred and contextualised as part of the variety of relationships between the cultural industries and the creation of cultural identity.

▼ This thesis examines the recent phenomenon of physical exhibition-making within archives. It investigates how physical exhibitions are conceived and made in archives and their role in reimagining new ways for audiences to experience archival collections. Situated within a context of increasing digitisation, declining onsite visits to archives and progressively reduced finances, the research more broadly considers the role of exhibition in wider restructurings of archival spaces and organisations. It examines how and why archivists seek to transform the physical experience of being in public archives, thereby making archives more relevant and meaningful to people's lives. The research uses an interdisciplinary methodology and develops a theoretical framework which draws on the spatial and phenomenological ideas of Henri Lefebvre and Maurice Merleau-Ponty to re-examine archival exhibition practice. The research comprises a broad, international survey of exhibition practice and two detailed case studies. The thesis makes a contribution to knowledge by developing understanding around archive exhibition, based upon a broad yet detailed body of research findings and an innovative theoretical and methodological approach; and has potential impact both in terms of archival theory and practice. The thesis argues that existing discussions of exhibition within archival literature are largely framed through a discourse of justification; whilst exhibition is principally conceived as a form of outreach. Drawing across a whole range of recent archival practice, the thesis shows that exhibition is, rather, part of a pluralising of experience that recognises distinct and diverse audiences and uses. In this sense, exhibition is understood not only as a form of promotion but also as a means of encounter and as a site of discussion and debate. Moreover, the thesis proposes wider implications for the space of the archive as a cultural venue and meeting place.

▼ This thesis is the first comparative study of exhibition histories in Southeast Asia from the 1970s to 1990s. It aims to inaugurate new ways of studying exhibitions by identifying, validating and constructing typologies of exhibitions. It brings to the fore a new exhibition type: ‘critical exhibitions’, which marked watershed moments in the history of exhibitions in the Southeast Asian region. The critical exhibitions examined include Towards a Mystical Reality: A Documentation of Jointly Initiated Experiences by Redza Piyadasa and Sulaiman Esa (Malaysia, 1974), the Gerakan Seni Rupa Baru (New Art Movement, Indonesia, 1975), the Bill-Board Cut-Out exhibition (Thailand, 1975), the Notes on Hayuma exhibition (Philippines, 1977), Po Po’s Untitled exhibition (Myanmar, 1987), the Time Show (Singapore, 1989–1990), and the Art Festival: Temples and Cemeteries (Thailand, 1992–1993). Within an exploration of the historical reasons behind the emergence of the critical exhibition, this research asks how the exhibition as a critical form intersected with new ways of thinking about art, art-making, and the public display of art. Employing a range of methodologies from disciplines such as curatorial studies, art history, discourse analysis and history, it studies discourse, space and time as constituents and material of critical exhibitions by constructing accurate models of these exhibitions. Using physical exhibition models and archival materials as methodological tools, it analyses how the curation of multiple artworks in an exhibition produce meanings in dialogue with each other, and how audiences actually experience an exhibition.
Do exhibition histories produce their own material and methodologies? This thesis advances exhibition histories as an emerging discipline by proposing methods and approaches to study exhibitions. It highlights the importance of studying exhibitions not merely as a container of art, but also as a critical form that repositions the exhibition, art, artists and spectators towards more participatory directions. Furthermore, this research demonstrates how critical exhibitions marked an exhibitionary turn towards artistic and exhibitionary practices that were socially-engaged, conceptual, and participatory. They produced art manifestos that radically questioned the social role of art, its institutions and, most importantly, how it is displayed in exhibitions. A shared attention to criticality as a method of thinking about, displaying and making art resonates across these critical exhibitions. It was precisely this manifestation of a critical turn in Southeast Asian exhibitions that produced methodologies for reimagining the study of exhibitions through exhibitionary discourse, space, time, and subsequently their restagings and multiple afterlives.

▼ Film has always had an important relationship to the
art world and a number of well-known artists, such as Fernand
Léger, Salvador Dalí, Joseph Cornell, and Andy Warhol, have long
been known for their film work. However, the filmic pursuits of
these artists were generally considered secondary to their work in
more traditional artistic mediums. With the birth of structural
film and the rise of video art in the 1960s, the art world embraced
artists whose primary mode of practice was the moving image. This
movement has continued in recent years to include projected – often
feature length – images, turning the gallery space into a place for
film viewing and moving away from the small screen so associated
with video art. This dissertation examines the projected images
created by a group of contemporary artists whose work directly
engages with the mainstream film industry either through remakes
and revision or through an appropriation of Hollywood's aesthetic
practices. The core artists of study for this project are Pierre
Huyghe, Douglas Gordon, and Doug Aitken. This project positions
these works within the history of avant-garde filmmaking and
considers them as extensions of the interventions with mainstream
media that avant-garde film has been invested with from its
inception. Additionally, it examines how this position within the
art world raises important questions for what it means to be
avant-garde with a shift from an underground, radical position to
that of a culturally mainstream, commercial, high profile position.
❧ The move to the museum also poses specific spatial,
environmental, and behavioral concerns for the artist and spectator
to engage with and this project is engaged with an evaluation of
these concerns. Specifically, it examines the phenomenology of the
gallery and how this viewing environment complicates theories of
spectatorship since the gallery is not constrained by the
conventions of the theatre space. In conjunction with this, the
project is focused on medium specificity and considers how the
properties of specific formats, primarily video in both its analog
and digital forms, function within the art world. It positions
these moving image media works as ones that are distinctly
interested in the medium and that often function as a showcase for
obsolete technologies. As a result, this project situates these new
works within historic concerns about medium specificity within 20th
Century art historical discourse. ❧ This project does not seek to
be an overall history of the projected image in media art, but
rather looks at specific artists – Huyghe, Gordon, Aitken – as case
studies that show the multitude of issues at stake in these types
of work, such as commodity, technology, medium specificity,
spectatorship, fandom, and phenomenology. While the work of these
artists has been written on by art historians and surveyed in
museum exhibitions, there has been relatively little work done on

Sab??r a m??, a Master of Fine Arts culminating
exhibition, ran from April 12th
through the 17th, 2010 at the University Art Gallery in Taylor Hall. This
exhibition consisted
of a five-piece installation made from clay, bronze and steel. The title of the show
is derived from a song, a Mexican standard, composed by Alvaro Carrillo. The phrase
sab??r a m??, translated means, ???my flavor??? or ???a taste of me.??? This song alludes to the dualities
of my self-identity as seen through traditional, contemporary and popular cultures.
The gallery was divided into two sections. Upon entering the space, the
viewer was confronted with a long hallway which housed thirty set traps linked together
by a long, winding chain. The rusty traps lay wide mouthed with a pink tongue positioned
in the center as both trigger and bait. The viewer???s options for entering the space
were to walk through the silent barrage of hungry traps or to opt out and hop a chain,
hung blocking a narrow doorway to the interior space. The second and main area of the
installation
x
housed ceramic tongues hanging from the ceiling and one sitting on a 3.5??? x 3??? x 3???
butcher???s block. The tongues, pierced with black, steel rings, hung at heights in relation
to the proportions of my own body.
By using the tongue as a surrogate for myself I was able to play with the
metaphors associated with this sultry and repulsive muscle. The tongue is the only muscle
of the body that exists in two environments at once. It lives inside of our mouth but
can easily protrude; it exists for both function and pleasure. The tongue changes roles
from tantalizing bait to vulnerable meat, both inviting and repelling its viewer.

exhibition is about exploring the transformation of forms, in this case architectural
structures, when they have, for whatever reason, turned to ruin. This work is
notably influenced by the work of Andrew Moore that depicts ruined buildings in Detroit
after decades of economic depression and the resulting abandonment of much of the city.
The images of ruined structures lead to the replication of destruction, decay and demolition
on a series of dollhouses. These selectively destroyed structures were then photographed
with a focus on compositions of forms where the original architecture turned to
ruin. The images were then used as a basis for paintings where the dilapidated structures
are reduced to just wisps of what they once were. The loss of structure that occurred in
this transformation expresses the anxiety of coming from a secure and sturdy haven to an
uncertain and unstable existence.

exhibition for the Master???s of Fine Arts in Art degree displayed a wide range of media including printmaking, video, and photography integrated together to convey an exploration into how childhood memories can affect aesthetics and perception into adulthood. The toys and records used as source material for the work connected my personal history to the audience???s through shared popular culture references such as Mary Poppins, Sesame Street and Rainbow Brite. Use of distorted sounds and photographs symbolized how memories can fade away and blur over time. Prints and books were shown alongside a separate video projection room, while custom vinyl records played on three vintage children???s record players placed throughout the space. Sounds changed for viewers as they moved around the gallery and the songs connected to what was seen in the prints exhibited on the walls. In the center of the room all of the audio pieces combined creating a distorting and confusing sound. The sensory stimulating installation engaged viewers through sound, sight and touch. Magnifying glasses were available for viewers to look closely at the prints and books. They enhanced the dense visual information within the photographic imagery revealing hidden surprises. Juxtaposition of black and white with color captured a fading and letting go of the past.

▼ The recent probing of display conventions and audience interrelations in contemporary
exhibition venues prompted a renewed interest in the history of avant-garde
exhibition design. Within this field of study, this thesis identifies a very narrow thematic and historic area of interest. It proposes that the rise of experimental
exhibition models in 1920s Weimar Germany was intimately linked to a changed understanding of materiality inspired by the scientific and technological innovations of the time â a fact that has been disregarded in current
exhibition scholarship. It demonstrates how ideas about materiality â the calculated layering of materials, colour, light, and text â informed display and engaged audiences. The
exhibition environment, previously conceived as a representational backdrop, was not only foregrounded but assigned a central mediating role. These endeavours, I propose, capture the historic moment when traditional nineteenth century
exhibition typologies began to be transfigured through novel experimental practices that reveal and develop vital links between material aesthetics and mediation. My original contribution to knowledge consists in the detailed analysis of a series of display models which emerged in Weimar Germany in 1923-30 and which are examined through the lenses of materiality and mediality. The selected display models are: Aby Warburgâs Kulturwissenschaftliche Bibliothek (Library of Cultural Sciences) in Hamburg; Alexander Dorner's Provinzialmuseum in Hannover; El Lissitzky's Dresden and Hannover Demonstration Rooms; and Walter Gropius, Marcel Breuer, Herbert Bayer, and László Moholy-Nagy's 1930 Werkbund
Exhibition in Paris. Together, these case studies offer a series of alternative concepts that represent a paradigmatic shift from representation to mediation, from formal display typologies to material experimentation, and from display spaces based on art historical principles to environments organised on the basis of the visitor's experience. The investigation draws upon archival material including photographs, drawings, reviews, and official and personal documents. It uses case studies as a prime method of investigation, developing its central arguments from a detailed analysis of the particulars of each case.

▼ This research looks at how independent artists employ unorthodox exhibition methods as an alternative to exhibiting in a traditional white walled gallery or museum setting and the ways in which those methods attract and engage a broad public audience. This study combines a survey of literature from the field reporting on such matters with a series of case studies, focused on three working visual artists. It investigates the reoccurring themes which arise among the artists in addition to what has been reviewed in the field. The analysis summarizes three key points critical to each independent artist’s ability to attract a broad and lasting public audience. Additionally, findings illustrate how established arts organizations can apply these methodologies to ensure their own exhibitions are successful in engaging new audiences and building a wider public interest. The findings in this study review limited information and there is much quantitative research and analysis still to be done in regards to identifying broader audience attendance, participation and retention strategies.

exhibition industry has grown steadily in significance. As a result, this thesis argues that associated large environmental impacts have emerged invisibly. Because they are invisible, these impacts have not been paid adequate attention. Few relevant studies have attempted to investigate the consequence of the impacts of expositions and especially current “sustainable” expositions. This thesis investigates the whole life cycle energy use, carbon footprint and ecological footprint of large-scale exhibitions in terms of the contributing factors, including
exhibition buildings, visitor-related transportation, and
exhibition-related economic aspects. The aim of this research is to determine, within this scope, the environmental impact of large-scale exhibitions and define what a real sustainable exposition and sustainable
exhibition building might be. More specially, it creates an appropriate and specific methodology for assessing the environmental impacts generated from
exhibition-related factors.
A mixed methods research approach through integration of Life Cycle Analysis and Ecological Footprint Analysis is used. This is to account for whole life cycle energy and resource use and the resulting environmental impacts generated from
exhibition buildings (over the construction, operation, maintenance, and demolition phases), different transport modes for visitor travel, and the
exhibition-related economic aspect of four case studies. These are the Great
Exhibition of 1851 in London, the National
Exhibition in Shanghai, Expo 2000 in Hannover, and Expo 2010 in Shanghai. The results of comparative analysis confirm that the total energy and resource consumption of large-scale exhibitions is increasing. The
exhibition-related economic aspects consumed most energy and resources, and these rise in relation to the number of visitors, especially visitors from outside the host city. For visitor travel, the choice of visitor transport modes can significantly affect the overall environmental impact. Foreign visitors going to expos by airplane lead to more energy usage than the average travel energy consumption for an expo. For local travelling, using public transport modes can effectively help to reduce energy and resource usage in host cities. For buildings, using the hightech approach currently does little to mitigate the energy and resource usage of large expo pavilions. Due to the short useful life, current sustainable
exhibition buildings do not perform as well as their designers imagined. Therefore, the energy flow of sustainable
exhibition buildings as influenced by actual useful life needs to be paid more attention in the process of environmental assessment.
Furthermore, it is proposed that the assessment method developed in this research can be used to evaluate the impacts of large-scale events, similar to expositions, on the environment in terms of their energy and resource consumption. ▼ Exhibitions have undergone a shift from being presentation oriented to visitors’ experience focused. Visitors associate themselves with stories stronger than other methods of absorbing information. Therefore, museums and galleries invite specialists from film/theater industries to design exhibitions for enhancing experiences in space. Bal points out the potential of merging these two disciplines by analyzing an
exhibition through film criticism, mise-en-scene, which shares similar methods to
exhibition design techniques but has wider perspectives in supporting the completion of the narrative.
This research investigates the possibilities of applying mise-en-scene as an
exhibition planning tool for narrative based exhibitions. Two self-curated exhibitions explored the benefits and challenges for the application of this film technique using an action research methodology. The intent of this research is to offer insights into the cross-disciplinary merger in
exhibition design, additionally, evidence of its possibilities and limitations is provided.

▼ The amount of memorial museums that built for preserving regenerating trauma or disaster commonly experienced by human society are increased significantly during 1995 to 2005. Similarly, since the late 1980s, trauma site memorial museums were built in Taiwan. The earliest one is the August 23rd Artillery Battle Museum built in Kimen in 1988. Later on, museums related to 228 Event and Human Right issues are established. The establishment of Preparatory Office of the National Human Rights Museum and The Peace Memorial Museum of the Comfort Women and Womenâs Rights reflecting that the amount of trauma site memorial museums are booming still. The characteristics of trauma site memorial museums include âa very different proposition,â âmemorials built on sites of historical traumas or memorial museums createdâ and âcollecting the surviving objects after disaster events.â Sandell emphasizes the social responsibility of museums in the public life. In this research, the basic elements of
exhibition, development process and evaluation of trauma site memorial museums are analyzed and hope to conclude how a trauma site memorial museum practice its social responsibilities through
exhibition.
Case studies were used as main research methodology. Methods of data collection are document analysis, observation and interview. Interviewees are experts, scholars of related museums and staff members of trauma site museums. Three cases chosen are: Taipei 228 Memorial Museum, Preparatory Office of the National Human Rights Museum and War and Peace Memorial Park Thematic Museum. The research attempts to understand and discover those museums' social responsibilities.
In conclusion trauma site memorial museums by practice their responsibility through: 1. Preserving historical buildings, objects and records to completely present the collective memories of historical events. 2. Restoring historical scenario to allow people experience what the victims had experienced. 3. Increasing understanding of the events thorough stories of victims and interpretation. 4. Building memorial objects or spaces to offer the chance of visitors to feel the sacrifice of victims and alert the successors to keep the state and political violence happing again. 5. Pursuing justice and peace through the contents and objects exhibited. 6. Comforting families of victims by exhibitions, both in the topics and in the contents, in the stand points of victims and the families. 7. Stating the facts professionally and objectively by collecting opinions and suggestions from experts and scholars. 8. Redressing and providing care to the victims and families, physically and mentally through operation of museums. 9. Increasing interaction between visitors and historical events by providing questionnaires or billboard for visitors. 10. Expanding the influence of human right education through learning sheets, network resources and publications. ▼ This dissertation originated from an interest in
museum architecture and the desire to improve museum experiences
for the inhabitants of Pretoria. The city is in need of a museum
that does not distinguish between different cultures and
backgrounds, and that provides an experience that a regular city
user can relate to. This dissertation aims to address this need
with the creation of a museum that relies on a chance museum
encounter in an everyday place. This museum encounter will enrich
people’s daily city experiences and provide opportunity for
self-reflection and contemplation. The dissertation proposes a new
satellite museum for the existing Ditsong: National Museum of
Cultural History as a method of exposing the public to this museum.
This satellite museum will function as a branch of the larger
museum. The aim of this satellite museum is to provide regular
users of the city with an unexpected museum experience. This
dissertation considers what a contemporary museum in the inner city
of Pretoria should be in terms of function and architectural
implementation. The document investigates contemporary trends in
museum architecture and evaluates existing museums in Pretoria. It
also includes an investigation into culture in South Africa and
into the relation of the satellite museum to its context. The study
concludes that a contemporary museum experience is one that
facilitates continuous change, and provides a spatial experience
that blurs the threshold between the new museum and existing public
space.

▼ Since their creation, we have grown increasingly reliant on machines to aid us in our understanding and perceptions of the world - the camera is no exception. As an extension of the human eye, it allows us the opportunity to examine our environments from new perspectives, offering up views that we may not be able to witness on our own.
Though in truth, the structure of the machine is ingrained in everything we know: from the natural world to our social patterns, actions are prescribed, parts move with united purpose, yet there is a certain comfort in the surrender of agency.
This thesis explores intersections of the organic and the artificial, the natural with the synthetic, in order to reveal underlying structures of control that pervade every facet of our existence.

▼ This research operates at the nexus between actual and virtual space. In interior architecture we can use tools to produce virtual experience, being immersed in a world or space different to your physical location. These tools can include, but are not limited to, actual materials, forms, spaces, and arrangements. Virtual space is described as the non-material spatial experience. This experience disconnects us from the physical actual environment that we live in. The best example of this is that of a cinematic experience. When we watch a film in a cinema, the actual physical environment we usually occupy is re-contextualised through a lack of light; our focus is then given to the light and movement produced by the projected image where we become encapsulated by this sense of virtual that we cannot control. We experience a sense of space different to our own and occupy this space although it remains less tangible than the physical world we live in.
This thesis proposes a redesign to the public areas for the site of — Ngā Taonga Sound and Vision in Wellington. Currently, the only access the public has to the collection is through digital means, a small cinema and collection of computers in the media library. This project aims to create engaging, embodied encounters with the digital collection of Ngā Taonga Sound and Vision through a series of interior installations within the site. These installations extend the virtual interior created by the sound and moving images further into the boundaries of the actual, physical interior.
The
exhibition spaces of Ngā Taonga Sound and Vision offer a rich testing site, and provokes the question, how can we create more immersive, engaging encounters of the incredible films collected by Ngā Taonga? The purpose of an archive is to preserve the past for future generations. Although the site currently allows some opportunities for the public to access the collection, it lacks a sense of immersion that can be explored through interior architecture interventions.

▼ The term “alternative space,” referring to art
exhibition and performance spaces that combated the strict and dominating mainstream art world, has already been largely defined through academic and professional research. The primary definition used in this thesis comes from Lynne Warren’s 1984 publication, Alternative Spaces: A History in Chicago, that describes the alternative space as “Not-for-profit or noncommercial organizations originated by and for artists (and assuring them a primary role in policy development and programming) that primarily shows Chicago-area artists, has a fixed location and operates on a continuous basis.” The vagueness of the term, “alternative space,” however, excludes other types of “alternative spaces” that have been established, including the public space focused on in this thesis, the coffee house. Without any previous scholarly research conducted on the coffee house specifically as an alternative art venue, this thesis approaches multiple angles of the function and purpose of the coffee house gallery, including the evolution of the coffee industry, the rise of alternative spaces, Ray Oldenburg’s concept of “third place,” systems of value within the art market, and perceptions of coffee house art. The research also utilizes three case studies of Chicago-area coffee house galleries to provide a closer look at
exhibition practices within the coffee house and how they foster relationships with their respective communities.

▼ The original idea for this research came from a combination of the work that Richard Sandell has done on social inclusion in the United Kingdom, and my personal experiences with chronic pain. The aim of this research is to make known the experiences of chronic pain survivors in New Zealand and also to bring understanding about a range of invisible illnesses where chronic pain is a major symptom. Research methods used include surveys using quota sampling and content analysis, case studies, and an
exhibition proposal.
People living with chronic pain make up one in five New Zealanders, meaning just over 900,000 people have this condition/disability/illness. Yet, have you heard anyone talk about it? Cancer is often spoken about, but it only effects around 20,000 New Zealanders. Mental health problems are contemporaneous but only effect approximately 582,000 people in New Zealand. However chronic pain cannot kill, or can it? Many people who have chronic pain have other co-morbid disorders such as depression. Chronic pain needs more publicity, it yearns to be spoken about and understood. People with chronic pain have said that they feel misunderstood and unheard not only by family, friends and colleagues but also by their medical professionals as well.
This research looks at whether there would be support from both the chronic pain community and healthy New Zealanders for an art
exhibition about chronic pain. The
exhibition would contain art produced by people with chronic pain and depict their daily lives with their condition(s). It also offers a contribution to museum studies and current practice by attending to a gap in the New Zealand literature, not even well covered by overseas literature, on this
subject. It is the first dissertation to focus on pain in a museum/gallery setting in New Zealand and opens up public interaction and discussion about a taboo topic.
New Zealand museums and galleries have to have the ability to challenge preconceived opinions and ideas about chronic pain, as well as the opportunity to engage with a large and often invisible community.
