▼ Climate change has become a major concern for research and policy in recent decades, and housing has been an important area to tackle as globally this sector accounts for roughly a quarter of energy demand, and its resulting carbon emissions (Staffell et al., 2015). Behaviour change campaigns constitute a significant strand within government responses to reduce carbon emissions. However, on the grounds that environmental impact has little to do with individual’s intentions, there is growing interest in the ordinary, rather than the extraordinary (e.g. pro-environmental values), and the socio-material transformation of collective conventions (Shove, 2010). Research emerging from this ‘practice turn’ is often underpinned by evidence of changing expectations of comfort that undermine improvements in energy efficiency (Hitchings and Lee, 2008; Walker et al., 2016). Notably, research indicates that it is increasingly common for indoor environments to be maintained within a narrow range of temperatures through mechanical heating and cooling, which has significant implications for energy (Shove, 2003).
While these practice-informed studies have successfully offered new avenues for intervention in sustainable consumption, home comfort has been rather narrowly investigated and has often been equated with thermal comfort. Yet expectations of home comfort and household management decisions are much more complex and multifaceted than the desire to be sufficiently warm or cool. A focus on thermal comfort has arguably trivialised other meanings of home comfort that might also be significant to understanding patterns of domestic energy demand. The aim of this thesis therefore was to develop a concept of home comfort to inform understandings, debates and policy related to domestic energy demand, and this thesis presents data from whole-household interviews, house tours, ideal drawings and home energy adviser interviews to address this aim.
A key finding of this thesis was that home comfort is a sense of relaxation and wellbeing, which results from companionship and having some sense of control in the home. Broadening out understandings of occupant satisfaction to account for some of this complexity draws attention to householder’s perception of the space per person ‘needed’ to facilitate comfortably sharing the home with others. Engaging with the trend towards increasing space per person is important because it has the potential to reduce energy demand for space heating without falling back into emphasising technical intervention or questioning the standardisation of thermal comfort. Furthermore, householder’s actions to reduce domestic energy demand were found to be tightly, if implicitly, linked to expectations of home comfort and processes of homemaking. It is important to remember that changes to the home are not simply the result of financial rationalisation or attempts to improve thermal comfort. There is certainly scope for the concept of home comfort to inform understanding of domestic energy demand and to highlight…

▼ The use of glass in Vietnamese architecture has dramatically increased since the late 1980s. This has influenced local traditional architecture and the everyday activities of local people by introducing new architectural typologies and construction technologies. Although glass technologies have been introduced and are always upgraded, there is no study concerning their local cultural aspects. This research investigates the relationship between the proliferation of the use of glass and the changing nature of traditional everyday activities. The aim is to fill the gap in the understanding of the impact of glass on Vietnamese culture and architecture, which will hopefully lead to insights into the unique architectural values of Vietnam by suggesting design strategies for the use of glass in Vietnam that suits the everyday life of local people.
My thesis examines the use of glass in contemporary Vietnamese architecture, by particularly looking at shop-houses – also known as ‘tube’ houses – a typical building typology of traditional architecture that generally have a shop at the front and family living quarters at the rear. The shop-house is a good vehicle for the research because its form has integrated many traditional activities like shopping, working, eating, studying, sleeping, etc. which have changed significantly in recent times due to the widespread use of glass. Methodologically, I will firstly sketch out the traditional Vietnamese architectural grammar and traditional everyday lifestyle associated with them. This will provide useful information to gauge the effect of glass on Vietnamese architecture. I will then investigate the use of glass in some contemporary newly-built shop-houses, and conduct content and comparative analyses of the glass architecture (shop-houses) between the past and the present. Given that the use of glass is ‘new’ in Vietnam, my research will end with an investigation of the relationship between glass and phong thuy, a traditional method of house design, in order to suggest a possible cultural solution to the use of glass in the future.
Lessons drawn from the historical research, the observation of everyday life and the architecture of contemporary Vietnamese shop-houses, and the investigation of the compatibility between glass and phong thuy, will support the research question about how the use of glass has influenced local architectural characteristics as well as the everyday culture of the Vietnamese people.

Serbo-Croatian literature of 16th century
- Renaissance literature in Dubrovnik

▼ This study draws from a series of qualitative interviews and take-home diaries conducted with groups of home film and television audiences to examine
everyday practices of media attention and distraction. Often taken as clear and separate experiential states, attentiveness and distractedness are actually social categories with leaky boundaries and definitions. Together, they suggest logics from which audiences draw when they justify combining or not combining movies and television with other aspects of their daily routines (including mobile phone use, cooking, sleeping, working, and so on). Interviewing groups of cinephiles, television binge- watchers, and parents of small children, I detail how people try to attend and not attend to aspects of media texts in order to see themselves as “attentive” or “distracted” in particular contexts. I argue that these practices reveal some of the boundary work of
everyday life itself— as a domain of accidents and unpredictability, as a sense of certainty and stability, as a series of managed time and work/leisure boundaries, and as a site for suspicion toward media influences. Within cinema and media studies, arguments about screen attention and distraction have been central to claims about medium specificity, genre and textuality, fandom, screen influence, and the organization of home
life. By focusing on
everyday knowledges about media engagement, my study both augments and complicates these assumptions about what it means to “watch” a media text, reflecting the (at once) anxiety, pleasure, impulsiveness, and indifference in how people may treat watching as a part of
life to manage or cultivate. Ultimately, attending to issues of attention suggests the ongoing interrelationships involved in negotiating screenic versus non-screenic areas of
life.

▼ This thesis is about the cultural phenomenon of homeownership in Ireland; a country where, historically, home ownership has particular cultural, symbolic content. It is also about the collapse of Irish property dreams using the key example of Priory Hall in Donaghmeade, Dublin 13. On Friday, 14 October 2011 Dublin City Council asked the High Court to evacuate the 249 residents of Priory Hall as it was declared a fire hazard due to poor building standards. My research considers how a group of some eighty-five families bought their dream homes in the Priory Hall apartment complex during the Celtic Tiger, only to find themselves a few short years later dispossessed and homeless yet still paying mortgages. Priory Hall is now one of the key spaces of representation for the follies of the Celtic Tiger era and subsequent economic collapse; it is also a key site in which notions of ownership, rights, responsibility and respectability are being hammered out alongside new modes of governing and new ways of articulating the relationships between the state and its citizens.

▼ This thesis addresses consuming behaviours in Ireland 1922-1960. Few works have previously addressed the history of consumption in twentieth century Ireland, and this work aims to redress this lacuna. Consuming behaviours are defined as activities that revolve around the marketplace, but do not necessarily involve purchasing. 1922 was selected as the start point because it is the foundation year of the Irish Free State, and 1960 was selected as the end point primarily because of the manner in which the period has been presented by broader Irish historiography. The dominant meta-narratives on Ireland in this period emphasise economic backwardness, control by the Church and State, and ignorance of international trends and developments. This thesis seeks to re-examine these narratives and ask how relevant they are to understanding
everyday life in Ireland by using consumer behaviours as a frame of analysis.
Together the chapters emphasise the agency of consumers and question how much control authorities, including the Church and State, were able to exercise over their behaviours. At the same time the limitations and restrictions affecting consumers are highlighted and discussed, but they are not given the often exaggerated significance found in some historiography. Frequent comparisons are drawn with other national contexts, both within and outside Europe, and the idea of Irish exceptionalism is repeatedly challenged. Most importantly the thesis argues for a reinterpretation of the dominant historiographical narratives on the era 1922-1960 and a more nuanced examination of
everyday life during this time.

▼ This thesis examines the relationships people have with rubbish in everyday life. Focusing on domestic recycling policy and practice, environmental concern and action is explored as a sociological problem in a way that moves beyond the individualising paradigms that dominate environmental discourse for behavioural change. In its place, this thesis argues that better explanation may reside in the social context of embedded practices, and how they get enacted in daily life. Beginning with a historical overview and evaluation of current policy, this thesis re-imagines domestic recycling as a complex socio-technical system involving the engagement of different actors. Conducted at the boundaries of sociology, this thesis draws on empirical and theoretical ideas that extend across disciplines. Methodologically the research has been grounded on a principle of mixed methods pragmatism, exploiting the Sequential Explanatory mixed methods research design. Conducted across two phases, Phase One involved the secondary analysis of the Scottish Household Survey and Phase Two the collection and analysis of qualitative data using the Diary- Interview method. The first phase was a macro- analysis of recycling practices in Scotland. The main results of this analysis are presented in Chapter 4, which built a Binary Logistic Regression model, using the Scottish Household Survey, to predict the characteristics of Scottish households likely to engage in recycling behaviour. In addition to identifying the social and structural dimensions of recycling in Scotland, this analysis also enabled a research site to be selected for Phase Two of the study. Chapters 5 and 6 respond to the macro- analysis by accounting for the micro- aspects of recycling practices by looking at the problem inductively. Using qualitative data analysed in Phase Two, these two chapters are based on the idea that how people value the environment is relevant for understanding contemporary recycling practices. Chapter 5 considers the explanatory usefulness of environmental ethics, values and citizenship for explaining why some households engage in environmental behaviour, but others do not. In Chapter 6 these arguments are developed further with a more detailed discussion about how household recycling practices get enacted in everyday life. Using evidence from the data, this chapter considers why commitment to ‘doing’ recycling varies between people and examines recycling as formed, cultivated and maintained habitual behaviour. Taken together the three data chapters try to show that, rather than be an inconsequential feature of normal domestic life, recycling is a practice deeply-rooted in wider social patterns and structural forces. In the final chapter, all of the micro- and macro- findings are integrated together and concluded, along with some reflections on the multidimensionality of contemporary recycling practices in the home, and what this might mean for policy and future research.

▼ This dissertation seeks to reengage the field of political economy to establish a political response to financial crisis, as well as the resulting social crisis of
everyday life, using the political economy of Hyman P. Minsky. As an academic field, political economy is in a strange kind of limbo. The separation of politics and economics is easy enough to see, and even within economics, there is another cleavage between economics proper and the history of economics. This yields some very strange conjectures about what it means to be an â economist,â and how things can be a matter for either economic â policyâ or â political economyâ as if these categories were all jumbled up in a grab bag of available methodologies. This dissertation seeks to carve out some intellectual terrain in what can be called political economy by engaging in an interdisciplinary way, inspired by Minsky, in order to offer a cogent political analysis of financial crises. Minsky gives five possible definitions for political economy: the discipline of Economics, a code name for Marxism, rational choice theory of profit maximization, the management of macroeconomic policy, and finally an interdisciplinary view of political economy that works in concert with other social sciences and humanities in order to identify and remedy social ills such as unemployment and poverty. The reading of Minsky in this dissertation is thus in an explicitly political way in order to bridge the gap between various kinds of economics and the various social sciences. By analyzing and critiquing each of these possible definitions of political economy, it becomes clear that a properly social definition of political economy is the final, interdisciplinary one. This dissertation argues that Minsky had a â preanalytic visionâ of the kind of society he wished his political economy to yield, and is a first step in fleshing out a political program for that vision.

▼ Wilderness is integral to the fabric of American culture. With the National Wilderness Preservation System, America has a measure against which everyday life may be compared. But there remains concern over disconnection between members of society and wilderness. Nonrepresentational theory (non-rep) is a rich and recent style of scientific practice that holds potential. Non-rep places emphasis on habitual practices and everyday life. Those interested in human affection for and connection with wilderness and the outdoors may find non-rep intellectually and practically refreshing. One aspect of this study offers a macrostructural analysis of the levels, layers, and sub-layers on which non-representational theory is founded. The analysis is intended to serve as a map for future outdoor recreation scholars interested in non-representational research. A great strength of non-rep is its capacity to inform research paths into the dynamics of human–nature connections. This study clearly marks one such path.
Affect is a popular theoretical construct that has received substantial scholarly attention in nonrepresentational theory and elsewhere through the so-called affective turn. To reveal insight into the concept of affect, another aspect of this study focuses on wilderness affect through a nonrepresentational theoretical lens. Research indicates that societal and cultural forces play an influential role in wilderness relationships. What’s lacking is a focus on how wilderness may affectively influence, build, or sustain human–wilderness relations at the personal rather than societal scale. Through the performance of non-representational research methods, 15 people participated in a study of how wilderness affect occurs in everyday life. For one week following a visit to the Moosehorn Wilderness Area participants kept a diary and camera to take notes and photographs when wilderness feelings or ideas formed. The diary-photograph, diary-interview method was augmented with exemplary and evocative anecdotes. The results of the study show some of the ways the emergence of affect becomes perceptible. It offers an example for how affect-oriented inquiry can be carried out and thereby can inform further outdoor recreation research. Wilderness affect is suggested as a different way of thinking about the potential to appreciate and respond to the differences that emerge from relations with wild nature. The study helps focus further inquiry into human–wilderness relations.

▼ The main objective of this ethnological thesis is
to investigate the linkage between everyday life with a genetic
disease and intrinsic patterns of modernity. The thesis is a
compilation thesis that contains four individual articles each
addressing the everyday experience of a genetic disease from
different angles, with different research questions and theoretical
presumptions. Each of the four articles has performed ethnographic
investigations, mainly through semi-structured interviews, with
individuals who in various ways are affected by Huntington’s
disease, which is a genetic brain disease. The four individual
articles show that the experiences of the affected individuals that
were captured in the interviews were not the only representations
of Huntington’s disease. Instead, these experiences were challenged
by representations offered by genetic science, which provided
representations of our body that depart from the way we ordinarily
experience and perceive our bodies in daily life. They were also
the legal representations used by the welfare system in order to
evaluate the everyday situation of the participants when they
applied for assistance from the welfare system. The presence of
these two institutions, science and the welfare society, led to the
notion of modernity, since these two institutions can be
characterized as systems through their use of instrumental
rationality for achieving their objectives. This divergence between
the lifeworld of the affected individuals and the representations
brought forward by the system gave rise to ambivalences that
offered forms of cultural and social change. These forms of
cultural and social change were seen in conjunction to so-called
“Third spaces” which can be characterized as a site where the sharp
distinction between lifeworld and system becomes less sharp and
less dichotomous and where new forms of engagements can be
established as a consequence of the sort of empowerment and
negotiations take place. These “Third spaces” will then be
important sites in which the implications of the scientific
development within genetics and the biomedical sciences take shape
in society. By investigating the link between everyday experiences
with general cultural patterns of modernity, the thesis does then
provide a deeper knowledge upon the interactions between genetic
science, culture and society.

▼ Food is central to everyday family life in Chinese society, and in return, Chinese family cultures have a significant influence on daily food practices. This thesis considers the emergent relationships between the domestic and food consumption in contemporary urban China for Xiaokang (middle-level) households. Focused on Guangzhou (the largest city in south China), it explores the relations between everyday food practices, home cultures and the process of Xiaokang family-making. It argues that these relationships are socially significant, emotionally charged and politically contested. More specifically, topics addressed include contemporary ideals for home design; emotional family life and memory; family relationships (both conjugal and inter-generational); and the relations between the domestic and the public. The main findings also portray how Xiaokang households maintain and extend their social networks through home- or family-based food consumption; and they foreground the importance of internal migration in the geographical understanding of the connections between home-making, mobility and consumer cultures in the Chinese context. These issues are discussed via empirical materials generated through in-depth qualitative fieldwork with 27 households. More broadly, the thesis contributes to existing scholarship on: the geographies of home; the role of food practices in family-making; the recent changes in Chinese family lives and home cultures; and contemporary developments in Chinese urban consumer cultures. Moreover, this research indicates that future studies on consumer cultures in the Chinese context should pay more attention to both intergenerational and gender relations.

▼ In recent years, the men's fashion magazine has become a new media genre that attracts lots of attention. The sales, advertisements, and publications of the men's fashion magazine have reached a remarkable performance. Most important of all, men's fashion magazines not only provide the male readers with content about appearance beauty but also mold the male readers into a new kind of masculinity called âNew Manâ. The âNew Manâ masculinity means that men can feel more comfortable to take some gender practices to improve their appearance beauty, such as putting on make-up, applying skincare products and so on.
Researches about men's fashion magazine in Taiwan mostly focus on market performance, and the notion and practice of male readers are ignored. This present study drawn on the audience in
everyday life theory, also employed the masculinity theory based on the sociologist R. W. Connell and the view of fluid identity (multiple subjectivities) based on the poststructuralist feminists. This study applied a methodology of qualitative in-depth interview with 6 male participants, tried to find the relation between menâs fashion magazine and
everyday gender practices of the readers.
The study found that when the male readers interpret the âNew Manâ image in the men's fashion magazine, they do negotiate the mainstream masculinity discourse in their
everyday life. Their negotiation involves their unequal investment in multiple subjectivities in
everyday life. The study also found that men's fashion magazine is a text that can mediate the masculinity discourse, so the
everyday gender practices of readers regarding the magazine text are their negotiation of masculinity as well. The male readers read men's fashion magazine and take âNew Manâ gender practices (ex. applying skincare products, putting on make-up, and taking care of figure) to create their own unique masculinity which exclude from femininity.
In conclusion, the new version masculinity (New Man) does overlap the old one (mainstream or traditional masculinity), which not only shows the diversity of masculinity but also provide the male readers with some space to exert their agency and negotiate the meaning of âwhat it means to be a maleâ.

▼ This thesis intends to examine the theme of womenâs identity searching through
everyday life in Doris Lessingâs The Golden Notebook. First published in 1962, The Golden Notebook deals with revolutionary topics concerning women and freedom. It is through the background descriptions of
everyday life that Lessing depicts women and their relations with society. My focus in this thesis is on three daily aspects that women confront the most: the
everyday space, domestic chores and womenâs images in the mass media. Using both feminist theories and theories of
everyday life, the thesis argues that female identity is shaped by what they do in
everyday life, that it is embedded in the practices of
everyday life.
The first chapter focuses on the
everyday space women inhabit such as the room, the house and the city. Michel de Certeauâs analysis of the visibility of the city and private space is discussed with the feminist views concerning women and their roles in both public places (workplace and city) and private ones (house, room and kitchen). The result indicates that womenâs relationship with space both facilitates and impedes their search for the selves. The second chapter investigates womenâs role in domestic realms with a focus on cooking and food. Though routine works such as cooking daily meals are usually taken as insignificant matters, they are actually the determining force of womenâs identity making because women perceive their social roles by responding to those trifles in their daily
life. Availing itself of Luce Giardâs conception of culinary activities as a pleasure for women and Sarah Sceatsâ view of the relation between food and women, the chapter suggests that womenâs own definition of belonging and what they value in
everyday life have everything to do with cooking and the sharing of food. In chapter three, I use Henri Lefebvreâs conception of womenâs magazine and Betty Friedanâs critique regarding certain female images in public media to point out how women live under the watchful eyes of society. I argue that, in modern society, mass media also plays a significant role in womenâs identity searching because womenâs images on the mass media may trigger each womanâs reflection of their own
life. This study demonstrates that through the daily activities, women discover their selves and thus reconstruct their identities in the end.

▼ Over the past ten years in Taiwan, there is an upsurge in the development of tourism. Cijin, one of the most important tourist attractions, is also the must-visit places for many tourists. This research started with three events, including changes in parking lots, H street reconstruction project, and mobile vendor reorganization, occurring during the process when Cijin became a focal island for international sightseeing, then exploring and trying to understand the relationship between tourism and peopleâs daily lives. Further inquiries included: As developing tourism became a key strategy for developing Kaohsiung in post-industry era, how would affected actors (stores/vendors) respond to relevant policies and plans promoted in Cijin? And why would they take these approaches to respond?
The results of this research were analyzed with the use of Document Analysis, Participant Observations, and In-Depth Interview. The research results showed that actors adopted different responses according to their daily
life patterns shaped by different spatial contexts â fixed or flow. Thus, if a place is considered having stable social relations, there will be more possibilities to proceed to organizational mobilization or collective negotiation. Relatively, for actors whose daily
life pattern flows greatly, the social relations among them are fragmented and unstable, which limited the possibility of organization and collectivization and can only respond individually. As for the parking lot changes, vendors in market C fought collectively. When facing police officersâ rectification and check, flowing vendors adopted diverse guerrilla tactics. Stores on H Street proceeded collective negotiation with Government to make building street plans.
Finally, the contribution of this research lain in that, in terms of theoretical level, it enriched the âspatialâ perspectives of daily
life proposed by James Scott, and in terms of practical level, it perceived the transformation of Kaohsiung City from the general publicâs perspective, expounding on structural momentum of Cijinâs tourism development as well as conflicts and tension occurring during the transforming process.

The study that originated the present Dissertation was developed amid an important national cycle of protests in opposition to a constitutional amendment that established a spending limit the growth of federal government spending to the rate of inflation for 20 years, and to a bill introducing radical changes in high school curriculum. Both reforms were proposed by the government that took power after the Brazilian parliamentary coup of May 2016 and were approved by the National Congress at the end of this year. These projects were opposed by massive student’s movements and university strikes, among others. In the Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul (Porto Alegre, Brazil), a technical-administrative staff strike lasted 44 days, and a teachers strike 21 days. We were part of the strike commands – one of us is from administrative staff (and an MSc student at that time) and the other is a teacher. We are also members of the Organization and Liberating Practice research group, based at the School of Administration, in which Marx and Marxist authors have been studied, such as Henri Lefebvre. Therefore, it was obvious that we could interconnect these two spaces (activism and academy) based on Lefebvre’s (2014) propositions on the critique of everyday life. The aim of this activist research was to analyze the everyday construction of these strikes, considering the living and the lived experience of workers and its meaning to transform potentially their everyday life. Lefebvre…

This work identifies and analyses the personal communication nets of inhabitants of short rural villages, in specific places of these villages, such as the square, the churches, the warehouses, the health station and other places where people meet themselves. The work verifies that social means of communication are present in the analyzed communities and how people establish relations with these means. The study is also focused in the affirmation process of the local culture, cultural hybridization and rejection of exogenous cultural elements that pass through personal communication nets. The field research was carried out in Bocaina quarter, Cunha city, SP, Brazil and in Calca, Tarma Province, Peru, with the use of techniques of exploratory and qualitative research, with participant observation. Women and some leaders were interviewed, twelve in Bocaina and eleven in Calca. Because of the structure and characteristics of short agricultural communities, that value their past, traditions and customs, the cultural transformations, from the communicational manner, occur in a slower way than in the urban societies, where changes tend to be continuous and fast. The personal communication nets were studied based in the concepts of reception studies.

This study was carried out among a group of nine families of a settlement of the Movement of Landless Rural Workers (MST ), in Rondônia. These families organize work and life collectively for over ten years around the \"Group Collective August 14\". Aimed at understanding the vicissitudes of everyday organizational process this experience and ways of work and life has been built from it. Inspired in ethnography, this research took everyday life as a horizon of visibility that allowed to understand the process of collectivization. Everyday life is understood as the space where life and social action happens ( SATO & SOUZA , 2001; SPINK , 2008) . Composed primarily by MST militants and the Small Farmers Movement (MPA), since early in camp these families have begun to develop practical agricultural cooperation and reciprocity. After significant experimentations, the group decided definitely collectivize the land and work on self-management in all sectors of work. To give concreteness to this proposal, also felt the need to collectivize domestic work, going to have a collective kitchen. Guided by a matrix and agroecological peasant, land, work and kitchen (as a space of sociability and work) make up the tripod that supports the daily…

▼ This study approaches the relations of family and school, from the perspective of the family. It
aims to analyze the meanings attributed by family to the school as a space for plural
relationships, and understand the relations that these mothers constitute culturally with
schools and their
everyday pedagogical practices. When we seek to understand this
problematic, it was established as guiding principles of the search in/from/with
everyday life.
Accordingly, we focused on, as main interlocutors, mothers and authors such as Certeau
(1994), Morin (2000) and Freire (1978), among others, on the understanding that cultural
diversity is an essential element of the complex relationship between family and public
school, because they come from different cultural contexts. In the course of the research it
was made the use of the procedure of dialogic conversation as a production process and
information analysis. The current analysis highlights that families observe the difference
between cultural and report that they are from different socio-political context set by the
school, they came from rural areas and their lives were marked by the struggle for survival,
and the work activity has been present since their childhood. For the families that participated
in this research the school is/was not part of the cultural repertoire significance in their lives
and it feels that they attribute to them, are in negotiations with their symbolic universe. The
mothers hold a speech of a schoolar binding and pertencing, but the school has the time as
possible in their daily lives. Thus, the dynamics of family and school relationships, is
configured as complex, and the ambiguity in maternal speech marks a thinking/doing about
the school in which they demonstrate ways of making the common man, involving the art of
duplicity of the saying and doing, gimmnicks and antidiscipline

▼ This thesis examines everyday mapping practices in our digital age. It builds on an eighteen-month ethnographic study of a diverse group of participants, including walkers, cyclists and drivers, leisure seekers, artists, and amateur and professional map makers based in London and surrounding areas. The thesis responds to two primary aims: firstly, it addresses how contemporary mapping practices are embedded in the cultural geographies of everyday life; secondly, it investigates how digital technologies are affecting contemporary mapping practices, and ultimately everyday experiences of place. Drawing from literature on place, digital technology, critical cartography, cartographic practice, and everyday geographies, the thesis brings both an empirical and theoretical contribution to current studies of maps and map users, socio-technical practice and conceptualisations of place. Overall it highlights the tensions, possibilities and limits of our current socio-technical moment, in which digital technologies are becoming more and more intertwined with our everyday experiences of the world, and traditional mapping technologies. The dissertation also makes a specific contribution to ethnographic studies of mapping cultures, as well as ethnographically-informed digital methodologies. Ethnographic materials are framed through the concept of interface, suggesting that contemporary mapping practices can only be understood by unpacking the minutia of everyday life, the relational properties of place and the power of maps. The first of the thematic chapters in the dissertation explores how a theory of mapping interfaces can shed light on how practices of navigation have been affected by digital mapping technology. The second chapter focuses on the practices of map making in both an amateur and professional context. The third chapter discusses the performativity of contemporary mapping practices. The following chapter discusses the conceptualisation of place in the digital age and shows how the intertwinement of digital technologies and everyday practices demands novel ways of thinking about place. The dissertation concludes with policy relevant suggestions as to how we might think about maps and technology when considering work relevant to everyday practice and place in the future.

▼ It was from the understanding of the ephemeral, the uncertainty and complexity that this dissertation was built. It is the result of my inquiries before the school and the difference(s) among students. I intended to dip in school life (re)visiting teaching practices embodied in the curricula made/invented various forms of questioning to be/seem/to be of the subjects. The survey of the everyday basic epistemological complexity much helped me understand the waves, storms, calms the lived/ experienced The contemporary period allows such understanding as it navigates over the chaos/order, certainty/uncertainty towards a process of dialogue with different cultures. ―Sailing is needed‖, says Fernando Pessoa. This trip was not done by itself and without company, on the contrary, there were many subjects and conversations carried out during observations in classrooms and meetings with teachers. I had as a locus the spacestimes of the State School São Vicente de Paulo (Juiz de Fora/MG), which showed to me how dynamic and complex is its process of facing the situations with their students. Thus the words of the teachers of the 5th year of Elementary School were essential parts of this diving, as there were constructions and deconstructions of thoughts and practices that constitute individualitiescollectivities of their students incarnated subjects and practitioners. Through the dialogue with the teachers we observed how subjects are constructed/deconstructed with high mobility; how subjects are canceled/exalted; how subjects are stereotyped; finally, how difference(s) constitute the subjects. In addition to establishing a deterministic thinking, we see that when the curriculum is strict, the identity(ies) are considered fixed and difference(s) are denied. In contrast, when a curriculum is made/invented, the identity(ies) are considered in their movements and difference(s) are experienced. Therefore, this research made me become hunter and hunted of myself and of pedagogical practices with the difference(s)

Based on Cultural History as the historiographic field, the present thesis structured in four chapters has as its study object the healthsickness pair, modalization of everyday life, whose movance and reconfigurations are observed in the scenery of Goiânia, a capital city in the Midwestern Region of Brazil, temporally inscribed in the period from the 80s of the twentieth century up to the present time. This research aimed at tracing a process presenting ruptures, permanences, reelaborations, and innovations conceived under the social, historic, and cultural conditions of the urban scene, which shows important elements of reconfiguration in this conjuncture. Having this presupposition as a starting point, the leading argumentation of this study searched for the healthsickness pair representation in vectors consubstantiated in the ancient practice of faith-healing, reelaborated or not, in the gyms, interpreted as places dedicated to the modern cult of the body, and the plurality of the protestant churches that are multiplying in the city, always convinced that the analysis of this complex whole would result in the city profile and the practices adopted by the actors that animate it around the healthsickness pair. As a counterpoint, the cesium-137 accident, which peculiarizes and deterritorializes this story, since it articulates that with environmental issues and the precarious health public…

▼ This study analyzes the sociocultural factors that affect Saudi students in the U.S. as they seek information and explores to what extent these factors impact their
everyday life information seeking (ELIS) behavior and their information technology behavior (ITB). The factors in this study illustrate the unique sociocultural values that distinguish Saudi students from other international student groups: gender segregation, emphasis on religion, social support, and utilization of the consultation concept. After collecting data from an online survey, the data from linear regression analyses revealed that only one culture factor (the language barrier) showed a significant impact on Saudi student ELIS in the U.S., while the other factors were not statistically significant. Also, the findings indicated that perceived usefulness (PU) and perceived ease of use (PEU) were statistically significant to the ELIS of Saudi students. Furthermore, the study showed that after academic information, food and drink, entertainment, and health were the top student needs, the top ranking sources for
everyday life seeking information were social media and the Internet. The findings of the study help to shed light on a sizable user group. As the fourth largest group of international students in the U.S., Saudi students have been underrepresented in research. Also, the study's findings and recommendations provide a more profound understanding of Saudi students for both the hosting American university officials and stakeholders who provide scholarships.

▼ All around the world,
women are still facing gender digital divide due to their
absence in the internet infrastructure establishment. The
Web 2.0 technology helps women to catch up with men in
adopting the internet. After the introduction of free
blog providers in 2000, a significant number of
Indonesian women embrace digital communication through
blogging practice. Having a resemblance with women
bloggers in general, Indonesian women bloggers tend to
use blogging to document personal experiences. However,
my thesis refuses to see Indonesian women as single
entities, thus I take up de Certeau’s idea in ‘The
Practice of Everyday Life’ (1984) to explain that within
the circulation of power in media discourse (Couldry,
2004) Indonesian women bloggers apply contextual tactics
to reclaim their sense of agency in the Indonesian
male-dominated public sphere.
Employing multidisciplinary approaches, my study
aim to answer the questions“what kind of things people do
in relation to media”? and also “how is the complexity of
users’s engagement with media embedded in everyday life
cultures”? (Takahashi, 2010; Couldry, 2005; Bird, 2003)
within Indonesian women’s context. My study shows that
blogging is not a universal practice, nor simple, limited
or fixed. That is, in their engagement with blogging,
Indonesian women make out by ‘poaching’ blogging in their
own contexts and reconstruct blogging for their own
social, economic, political and cultural benefit. Thus
within Indonesian women’s context that were subjected to
national ideology of state ibuism, a blog can be
understood as a medium of negotiation for Indonesian
women not only for joining public sphere, but also to
create their sense of
agency.

Taigi, noriu pasidairyti
