▼ Sustainability has become one of the key elements of development for most tourist destinations. Some cities have adopted a sustainable development strategy as a long-term solution in improving socio-economic, cultural, and environmental practices. Traditionally, destinations have used events to achieve community enrichment, protect the natural environment, and create or maintain national pride. The aim of this research was to analyse the impact of events on sustainable
tourism development in Durban. This research focused on the
event tourism sector and its impact on the economy, environment, politics and the socio-cultural being of the host community. The objectives were to discuss the role of events in profiling a destination and the extent to which they could serve as catalyst for repeat visitation; the study sought to analyse the perceptions of key stakeholders regarding the contribution of events to socio-economic growth of the City. In carrying out the research, a mixed method approach was used. A total of 400 questionnaires were researcher administered and 25 in-depth interviews were conducted. The results show that there are economic spin offs resulting from visitor spending during major events in the City. Furthermore, the study shows that although events can be used as a tool for sustainable
tourism development, the challenge is the unbalanced racial structure within the industry, poor state of the economy, and limited access to business start-up capital for SMMEs. The study concludes that events play a vital role in socio-economic growth and development of the
tourism sector in Durban and recommends multi-stakeholder collaboration and partnerships to ensure sustained
tourism growth.

▼ Current Thesis approaches event and festival attendance as leisure time activity and as special interest tourism. Due to specific elements and characteristics of the event and festival sector, there is great interest in research either from the management perspective or tourism approach. Research focuses on the Greek festival market and demonstrates its specific characteristics. Positive economic, tourism, social and cultural impacts have been well documented by relative literature and a wide range of best practices have been recorded in order to get full advantage from festival implementation. Nevertheless, events and festivals are affected from continuum changes at the economy and society and this fact diversifies their implementation context. Hence, there is a necessity of supply and demand characteristics examination into different time periods and geographical areas. Regarding the theoretical background of this research, a literature analysis on the fields of definition of events, festivals, event and festival tourism is conducted. Additionally, tourism motivation theories, concept of leisure time, event management and event marketing set the appropriate basis for field research. Data was collected from the attendees from three major Greek music festivals and focused on characteristics and segmentation of the audience according to their motives. Factor analysis, Cluster analysis and additional statistic tests were implemented in order to elaborate data. Moreover, interviews with key informants such as academics and event and festival managers were conducted in order to reveal supply and demand side characteristics of festivals and special interest tourism. Results come up with the appropriate context for approaching festivals - especially tourism festivals - by taking into account characteristics, problems and potential which derived from the research. Conclusions highlight the need for planning event and festivals by considering separate groups of attendees according to their specific motives and needs and suggest a theoretical model for understanding the differentiation of repeat visitors’ motives. Finally, practices for planning and management are proposed which are based on specific elements of Greek market and utilize the existing potential for tourism and cultural development.

▼ Rural decline associated with government restructuring in New Zealand in the 1980s has reduced the security of the agricultural economic base in many rural communities. These communities must find additional economic drivers to survive, and the appropriateness of possible economic drivers needs to be explored. Lawrence is a small rural town in New Zealand which has developed from a purely rural service centre to an attractive day-trip destination and host for
tourism events. In 2011 Lawrence held a one-off anniversary festival. This study focuses on this festival to explore the way in which Lawrence reinvented itself and to assess the success of its reinvention. Twenty Key Informant interviews were conducted with the local council, businesses and
event organisers. Further data were gathered through observation and document analysis. This study showed that
event tourism has expanded the economic base in Lawrence. The anniversary festival provided economic benefits and helped build a degree of social cohesion. Heritage
tourism is being further explored and there is planned a bike trail. However, the Lawrence community still faces social tension as different groups fail to work together and the community feels ignored by the district council. A lack of both communication and cooperation are key barriers to future growth in Lawrence. While these results are limited to this particular case study, they indicate that
tourism is a viable secondary activity in rural areas and that there is a need for local governments and organisations to be actively involved in their communities to achieve community cohesion, communication and cooperation.

▼ The aim of the study was to examine what the economic and touristic impacts of the sports event - UEFA EURO 2012 - will have on Polish regions. The essay was limited to some specific regions in Poland. Those regions were Gniewino, Malbork, Kalisz, Legionowo, Pommerian Province, Cracow, Olsztyn and Zamosc.
The Football Championships that will be held in 2012 are dependent of the big amount of football fans that will came and spend their money in Polish regions. Thanks to the increased consumption this creates demand for local services and products.
The generator of spending is the tourism multiplier that is the main link to the touristic expenditure. The multiplier is a catalyst of the region that creates jobs, growing yield, promotion of the region and improvement of its infrastructure and leisure facilities. This is considered as an advantage from an economical and touristic point of view.
The economical and tourstic benefits are different for every mentioned region in the study because of their location and link to the UEFA EURO 2012.
This study shows only how the different eight regions prepare for the UEFA EURO 2012 and what they think that the negative and positive economical and touristic impacts will gain them. The study gives only a short brief of the football event of what can happen.

▼ Travel and
tourism has been recognized as being an important driver of jobs, growth and economic recovery in the United States. Meetings, events and incentive travel contribute 98.7 billion of the direct spending, 15.0 billion in taxes and 859,000 jobs. As a result, destination marketing organizations (DMOs) in the United States are taking advantage of this impact for growth in their destinations. As a destination marketing organization's main job responsibility is to promote their destination to attract visitors, which requires superior marketing strategies to achieve these goals.
This research investigates the marketing strategies of DMOs in the United States. The specific purposes of the paper are: (1) to explore the incentives and marketing strategies used by DMOs to attract clients to a destination (2) to explore the importance of the strategic marketing features on a destination's desirability and (3) to provide the most effective destination marketing strategies for promoting a destination.
The data for this study were obtained by way of a survey and documentation. The target population for this study was DMOs in the United States of America and the unit of analysis was each individual DMO. The sample limitation for this study was destinations with populations less than 300,000. The sample selection acquired from the DMAI membership list for this study was a convenience sample consisting of 142 DMOs. Out of 142 surveys, 19 were collected and 13 were usable. Therefore, the data from 13 respondents were analyzed in this study. Descriptive statistics (Mean, Percentage, and Frequencies) were used to analyze the data collected for this study.
The results of the research reveal the importance of when DMOs are developing the marketing strategies for promoting their destination, there are some key elements that should be involved in their planning for success in attracting groups, (1) incorporating valued incentives, (2) using the most effective marketing strategies such as word-of-mouth and (3) enhancing and promoting the features of their destination, such as accessibility, cost of living, attractions, facilities and services, and image, brand and perception .

▼ The purpose of this study was to expand knowledge of sport tourists’ behavioral intention at recurring small-scale event (i.e., marathons) by analyzing several important factors: destination image, event image, and satisfaction. Data were
collected from 297 sport tourists (176 from the Mercedes-Benz Marathon Event, 121from the Publix Marathon Event). The results revealed that destination image, event image, and satisfaction positively influenced behavioral intention. The results also
indicated that satisfaction partially mediated the relationship between two images (i.e., destination image and event image) and behavioral intention. Lastly, the results supported that previous visit experience only moderated the relationship between
destination image and behavioral intention. The theoretical and practical implications of these findings are discussed, and suggestions for future direction are detailed.

▼ The primary objective of this study was to determine the social impact of arts festivals with reference to the ABSA KKNK. This goal was achieved by firstly analysing the social impact phenomena and the role thereof in events tourism. Secondly, a literature study was conducted in order to examine events as tourism products. Thirdly the results of the empirical research were discussed. Lastly conclusions were drawn from the research and recommendations were made with regard to the social impact of events as well as further research.
From the literature, social impact was defined as the changes in the norms and values of society that are more apparent in the short-term. It was noted that when tourists vacate to a specific destination, visible impacts are noticed. Events can however provide employment opportunities, promote international peace and pride, as well as promote educational and cultural experiences but it can also lead to increased levels of irritation, crime, drug and alcohol abuse and cultural change.
These positive and negative impacts were measured in the questionnaire, as adapted from Fredline and it was therefore the objective of the questionnaire to measure whether the community is positive or negative towards the festival, and whether there were any differences in the social impact when comparing the results of 2006 and 2007. The questionnaires were distributed in the community of Oudtshoorn based on a stratified sampling method followed by a random sampling method. A total of 444 questionnaires were completed, 179 in 2006 and 265 in 2007.
On a positive note respondents agreed on the following aspects in 2006 and 2007: the public money spent on the ABSA KKNK would be better spent on other things, media coverage of the ABSA KKNK promotes development in Oudtshoorn and the basic skill base for event management in Oudtshoorn has increased. On a negative note respondents agreed on the following aspects in 2006 and 2007: ordinary residents get no say in the planning and
management of the festival and traffic congestion is a problem. The positive impact has increased from 2006 to 2007.
Two factor analyses were performed to determine the social impact factors in order to determine differences in the social impact of 2006 and 2007. The first analysis resulted in nine factors which accounted for 56.85% of the total variance and were labeled as: community issues, damage to the environment, community activities, local business and community opportunities, pricing, public facilities, traffic, disturbances and visitors. The second analysis resulted in three factors that accounted for 44.22% of the total variance and were labelled according to similar characteristics which included: community opportunities, community problems and community image.
Means and standards deviations were determined after which the effect sizes were determined to explore the differences between the social impact for 2006 and 2007 on the dimensions of the various factors as determined in the factor analysis. It is clear that…

▼ Recently both in academia and media the phenomenon of 'overtourism' has surfaced, a development where
tourism negatively affects a destination. In Japan, this issue is called ‘kankou kougai’ (観光公害) or '
tourism pollution'. This thesis examines how impacts of ‘overtourism’ have developed in Japan throughout the years 2013-2018, including the role of involved actors (citizens, public and private sectors). Overtourism is predominantly a subjective concept based on perceptions of citizens, and it is thus difficult to exactly measure. Based on an
event data analysis of several Japanese newspapers and case study of Nara City, the results reveal that the frequency of negative
tourism impacts (economic, socio-cultural and environmental) generally increased alongside the increase in number of inbound tourists.

▼ Over the past several decades, sports event tourism has been a growing area of research for scholars in the fields of sport administration, strategic communications, destination marketing and tourism. The city of New Orleans is one of the most popular tourist destinations in the United States, with its various entertainment, sports, and cultural events. Over the past three decades, New Orleans has hosted over 30 major sports events and will host several more major events including the BCS National Championship, NCAA Men’s and Women’s Final Four, and the Super Bowl through February 2013. This case study shows several primary reasons that New Orleans is continually chosen as an event host, including its reputation as a vibrant, unique tourist destination along with its facility infrastructure. In-depth interviews conducted with New Orleans tourism and sports commission officials show that the presence of large stadiums and convention facilities, along with many hotels and restaurants in close proximity to these facilities, and the authenticity of the city as a tourist destination is what primarily sets New Orleans apart as a premier host and destination for major sports events.

a social, a cultural, a política, a tecnológica e a económica.
a comunidade, promover a coesão social e ganhar prestígio local.

▼ Recently, the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia (KSA) announced its intention to begin implementing a tourist visa regime to streamline entry of tourists into the country and, therefore, attract more international visitors. Food and Beverage festivals (F&B) are targeted as a crucial part of the events sector in Saudi Arabia as they align well with agricultural traditions and Middle East culture to attract both domestic and foreign tourist. The aim of this study was to explore the characteristics, management, and goals of F&B festivals in Saudi Arabia. F&B
event organizers were utilized to collect data regarding seven established F&B festivals that have been held for least the last 5 years. The results revealed that the size of the festivals ranged from 10,000 to 250,000 in annual attendance. While the length of the festivals averaged from 4 to as many as 35 days in length. Most of the festivals were held during peak vacation periods in Saudi Arabia when students have off from school, which coincided with the seasonal harvest of many of the festival themes. These festivals generally do not charge an entrance fee and attract all social categories of visitors. Some of the main activities provided to visitors are tasting products, viewing performances, and learning about regional agriculture traditions. The goal for these festivals were centered primarily on promoting regional agricultural products, attracting domestic and international tourists, in addition to providing educational programming for farmers and suppliers. In almost all of the festivals the primary organization and management is structured around governmental bodies that include national and regional organizations.

▼ This study aimed to offer a behavioral model of culinary tourists by examining the theoretical and empirical evidence on the relationships among motivation, image, sat-isfaction, and loyalty. In particular, the concept of image was approached from both a cognitive and an affective viewpoint. Using convenience sampling, 543 usable question-naires were collected at the 17th Hadong Wild Tea Cultural Festival in Hadong County, South Korea during May 2-6 in 2012. Twelve hypotheses were proposed in the model, which was tested using structural equation modeling (SEM). As a result, nine hypotheses out of the twelve were supported, showing that the model fit the data well (c2(196) = 541.788, c2/ df = 2.764, RMSEA = .057, CFI = .97, NFI = .95, and GFI = .92, RFI = .94, IFI = .97 and PNFI = .80).
This study revealed that motivation, experiential perception and affect were im-portant predictors of satisfaction and future behavior of culinary tourists; pull motivation-al factors, as a major parameter in expectation formation, influenced tourists’ experiential perception and their positive perception of programs/activities, food and tea products, supporting services and environmental factors generated pleasure and excitement. Then, in turn, tourists’ pull motivation, experiential perception and affect combined to influence their satisfaction and future behavior. Satisfaction served as a mediating role in determin-ing both food
event loyalty and destination loyalty except that tourists’ experiential per-ception had a direct effect on food
event loyalty. It should be noted that the relative im-portance of cognitive and affective aspects of the
event to influence their satisfaction and future behavior differed, indicating that affect with the
event experience had the strongest effect on satisfaction while experiential perception had a direct effect on food
event loyalty.
Finally, tourists’ positive perception and experience that satisfy their needs at an
event utilizing regional food and beverages can have a positive influence on the decision-making process of holiday destinations in the long run. That is, repeat visitation will be-come a benchmark of successful culinary
tourism along with the economic growth and development. It is clear that culinary
tourism can be used to promote a regional destina-tion by festivals or events utilizing local specialty.

As tourism is a revenue source that lies in both motivations and experiences that arouses and facilitates is will not be unusual to say that authenticity is the reason why a destination endures and resists.
Cultural tourism has been growing and developing as a resource for economic growth aiming the sustainability of the places and cities that host it. Few are the cities nowadays that do not bet in the creation of attractive events, sometimes similar to other events sometimes completely innovative, but that are capable to ensure a big touristic presence and that allow the city to be a part of an eventual imaginary tourist route, for those who seek the so called genuine and authentic cultural experiences.
The concept “eventful cities” yet new in Portugal is being used in other cities around the world and it has been studied by them, so that each city is capable of developing an authentic event portfolio as a touristic decoy, as well as a thrust activator of economic and social sustainability both local and regionally.
This thesis aims, above all, the attempt to understand some Portuguese eventful cities and the identification of a few event impacts, namely in medieval events, in order to study them and, eventually, propose changes so as to better fit the needs of the cities and their populations.

▼ Many destinations throughout the world have developed events portfolios as a strategic initiative to attract tourists and their associated economic benefits. The ability of events to attract people to a destination for the purpose of attending the
event is well documented. However the ability of an
event to add value to attract tourists before or after the
event is not so clear. In other words, can an events portfolio positively influence the decision to visit a destination at a time when none of the promoted events are scheduled? As a first step towards answering this important question, this study explores the contribution of an events portfolio to a consumer’s perceptions of a destination and how this influences their decision to attend a destination under these circumstances. The proposed study conducts a protocol analysis based on consumer’s decision-making thoughts. Each participant was given a choice between two destinations in India. Participants were asked to ‘think out loud’ as they made the decision to visit one of two possible destinations, one with an events portfolio and the other without. However, their visit does not coincide with the events’ dates. The results suggest four lines of reasoning utilised by prospective tourists in the destination choice process: 1) destination image; 2) the timing of the
event with respect the time of visit; 3) tourists’ level of interest in the
event; and, 4) events not listed in the events portfolio might be scheduled during the time of the proposed visit. In course of finding lines of reasoning for cross-cultural issues it was found that culture, architecture, English language usage, and food are the major aspects that tourists consider while travelling to Indian destinations. In terms of the events portfolio, there is evidence of a preference for a ‘fit’ between the
event and Indian culture.

In pace with the expansion of events tourism, requirements for security management in connection with the events are also increasing. Threat of hooliganism is common at certain events and needs to be dealt with to avoid possible impacts on the tourism industry. The purpose of this paper is to examine how the actors working on security before and during events ensure the health of the individual in circumstances where hooliganism is present and harasses the hospitality industry. Henceforth we want to arrive at the degree of hooliganism affect the tourist industry and in such cases, in which way. In order to respond to the aim and our issues, we have used a quantitative survey that helped us to demonstrate this phenomenon. The questions concern much about hooliganism and similar violent crimes get individuals to opt out of certain events as a result of hooliganism. In order to complete the remainder of the purpose, we have chosen to use a qualitative survey. The point of the qualitative survey was that it would give us a broader understanding of the subject, while it would answer our second question regarding security events. The collection of all of the studies, especially the quantitative, shows that threats like hooliganism have a negative effect on events tourism. The management is being streamlined through new methods that can hopefully counteract the fear that seems to have arisen within certain visitors.

Volunteers are a prevalent phenomenon in activities and an asset for many organizations. This empirical, qualitative study has been based on focus groups where respondents have been selected from two different areas of volunteers. This is to be able to study possible links between the two different types of volunteers, and how motivation may be described due to the choice of assignments. Terms that are used in this study are event volunteers and volunteer tourists. The study learns about what motivates ideal labor to want to perform and how different factors around motivation can differ depending on assignments. The study finds out what motivates ideal labor to want to perform. There is a lot of new research on the subject motivation, which indicates that the subject is complex and relevant to continue studying. Since previous studies were mostly based on quantitative data, this study is designed on a qualitative basis, to contribute to research on the topic with a more nuanced perspective. The study has resulted in how event organizations can learn from volunteer tourists in terms of motivation. The result has identified two dominant motivational factors common to both groups of volunteers; community and personal development. The result shows that depending on what task the volunteer has, the organisation needs to provide the right incentives.

▼ Nowadays, youth and event tourism are new specific types of tourism that have been given more attention in the academic literature. They are gaining in importance in the tourism industry in Croatia. This thesis aims to analyse the importance and impact that is brought by the Ultra Europe music festival to the city of Split, Croatia. The impact that is brought to a destination by a music festival is observed through three areas of analysis
(a) destination image, (b) creation of new products and services in a destination and (c) segmentation of visitors. Through these three dimensions, this thesis aims to see whether the “festivalisation” phenomena happened to the city of Split and how destination management and marketing stakeholders observe changes and use them for their business activities for the tourism market.
Vpliv glasbenega festivala na to hrvaško mesto bo proučevan skozi: a) podobo turistične destinacije, b) ponudbo novih produktov in dejavnosti in c) členitev obiskovalcev.

/ Еthnology and anthropology - Аnthropology of
tourism

Background: In the year 2030 Stockholm is going to be a metropolis and a city of world class events, in accordance with the City of Stockholm's Vision 2030. Until then, among other objectives for greater entrepreneurship and development in tourism, increased quality in education and increased collaboration between the private and public sector must be achieved and realized. The Stockholm Arena is part of that vision, as a piece of the infrastructure puzzle needed to attain the status of being an event city of world class.

▼ While discussions on the capacity of food tourism on promoting and maintaining the sustainability of host community have recently gained interest in tourism academia, the intersection between food events, tourism and sustainability need to be explored in a greater depth. This study focuses on place identity formation and examines how Ölands Skördefest shapes local residents’ place identity. In-depth interviews conducted with business representatives and tourism department members are themed analyzed through the lend of Identity Process Theory (IPT). The results illustrate how Ölands Skördefest shapes five components of place identity, and in particular how respondents felt about distinctiveness, belonging and self-efficacy. The study offers an understanding of how Ölands Skördefest contributes to promoting community sustainability through strengthening local place identity.

Europeia do Desporto 2018”.
sejam feitos importantes investimentos.

▼ Sport and tourism can play a major role in the bringing together of communities. The social cohesion that emanates from this interaction can make an important contribution to life in general, but rural life in particular in South Australia. Some towns have been struggling in recent times with high out-migration, bad seasons, loss of services and general low morale. A sport tourism event could well be seen as a fillip for the community and this study looks at seven towns and the role a particular sport tourism event, the Tour Down Under (TDU), plays in building the social capital of the community involved.
Many studies concentrate on the economic impact of sport tourism events but fail to contemplate the social impacts which can be just as important and meaningful for those involved. The economic rationalists of the world want to dissect, measure, plot, and statisticalise the figures from countless economic studies. But what really happens to the people who are actually running the events, staffing the information booths, intersections and generally freely giving their time and effort for the successful conduct of these events?
After closer, more in-depth investigation it can be demonstrated that sport tourism events play an important role in creating ‘social capital’ and helping communities develop trust, openness and respect for different individuals and groups. These events may not be the panacea of all ills but they can possibly go a long way to alleviating some of the rural malaise and feelings of isolation they are feeling at this present time.
Seven rural towns in South Australia, the scene of recent involvement with the Tour Down Under cycling race, were chosen for the research. A leading figure involved in the event, the so called bellwether, from each town was interviewed to gauge if the event helped improve community pride, developed networks, helped reciprocity and generally raised the morale of the community. Then utilizing the snow-ball sampling procedure 2-3 groups from each of the seven towns were “nominated” representing over 60 respondents to in-depth largely unstructured interviews to see what their reaction was to the same sorts of measures.
What was found was this event, the TDU, contributed to the building of bonding social capital in the communities investigated but had a negligible effect on the bridging social capital. There was certainly a propensity to view the TDU in a favourable light but much more could be done to fully engage the community and act as a strong catalyst to develop social capital in a more holistic and sustainable manner. Much more needs to be done in this area to accurately measure social capital and the role that sport tourism events could contribute more to the community strength and social cohesion.

▼ Entrepreneurs are found globally in all industries. In the tourism industry, entrepreneurs feature strongly in the events sector. The purpose of this study is to determine the entrepreneurs' role at festivals and in this case a national arts festival. The literature revealed that this type of study has not previously been conducted in South Africa. The literature review indicates that arts festivals as income generating events can be seen as an entrepreneurial opportunity to maximise economic activity. Entrepreneurs play a vital role in the success of an event such as arts festival. Entrepreneurs initiate transformation and serve as catalysts of innovation. Entrepreneurs are important role players since they attract and retain visitors and contribute to forming cultural identity of the arts festival.
In order to achieve the objective, a survey of all small businesses that were trading at one of South Africa's largest arts festivals, namely the Aardklop National Arts Festival held annually in the city of Potchefstroom, was conducted. Two hundred and twenty two useable questionnaires were captured on Excel and the data analysis included a factor analysis and descriptive results. The questionnaire consisted of three sections: section A - demographical information - 7 questions; section B - information on the business - 8 questions; and section C - festival information - 6 questions.
The main results reveal that the most important characteristics contributing to entrepreneurship are: a need for achievement, being successful, having the necessary organising skills, self-edification, being explorative, and commitment. The entrepreneurs indicated that they perceive their role at the arts festival to deliver unique, quality products and services and to market their businesses.
The findings from this study contributes to the limited academic research on entrepreneurs at arts festivals and will be beneficial for arts festival organising committees to determine future strategies on including entrepreneurs at arts festivals.

Enhancing customer engagement creates both opportunities and challenges for scholars and practitioners, especially in the service sector. One critical service sector of global importance is tourism. Specifically, tourism plays a critical role in many economies, and, because of its large contribution to GDP growth, is receiving growing attention from academics and practitioners (World Travel & Tourism Council, 2018). Specifically, Thailand, as a preferred destination, is expected to continue its fast growth and become the third biggest market for visitors by 2027 (Ministry of Foreign Affairs, 2017).
Customer engagement, when viewed from an organisational perspective, is an organisation’s strategies that encourage customers to connect to their service and brand, and stimulate long-term relationships. The potential outcomes of customer engagement include the attraction of new customers, reduced marketing budget activities, and a competitive advantage. The benefit of customer engagement from a customer perspective is the interaction through unique experiences with services and brands that serve to address their goals, and contribute to their subjective well-being.
This study develops a theoretical framework underpinned by proactive motivation theory and regulatory mode theory, proposing specific triggers for driving and fostering customer engagement with special event tourism. To uncover the underlying reasons for customer engagement with special events, proactive motivation theory is adopted to gain a deeper understanding of customers’ reasons to attend and actively engage with a special event. Further, the role of regulatory mode orientation is adopted to gain a deeper appreciation of “can do” motivation as a key to fostering the relationship between customer’s proactive motivation and engagement with a special event. In addition, this theoretical framework articulates the moderating role of self-image congruence and perceived event crowding in the relationship between customer engagement with a special event and perceived special event quality.
To test the proposed effects, this study uses a quantitative research approach with data drawn from three distinct special events in Thailand – the Sukhothai Loy Krathong and Candle Festival, the Khon Kaen International Marathon, and the Chiang Mai International Flower Festival. The findings advance knowledge in service marketing and tourism by offering theoretical explanations for the influence of drivers and consequences of customer engagement with a special event. In a practical context, this study also provides implications for tourism organisations to generate a better understanding of customers’ perception of special event experiences.

▼ Touring ‘blockbuster’ exhibitions (TBEs) are major international exhibitions that present collections of works of art, cultural objects, natural history or memorabilia. These exhibitions are of a limited duration, occur infrequently and attract local residents and tourists who travel specifically to view them. TBEs offer exciting experiences and may positively affect the profile of a host city. Although touring blockbuster exhibitions possess the attributes of special events, these exhibitions have received little attention in the
event and
tourism studies literature, or in the field of destination marketing. The primary research question this study addresses is: How do touring blockbuster exhibitions contribute to city
tourism marketing?
The growing importance of the creation and delivery of memorable experiences in
tourism, and the increasing awareness of the long term effects that events have on a host city’s identity and image, underpin the research.
An exploratory qualitative multiple case study was conducted in four cities: Auckland and Wellington in New Zealand, and Canberra and Melbourne in Australia. The chosen methodology allowed an investigation of TBEs within four diverse settings, enabled a deeper understanding of the processes within each case and was beneficial for drawing commonalities and variations across the cases. The Melbourne case proved to be the most advanced in terms of hosting of TBEs, while Auckland has yet to find ways to exploit the potential of these events. Policy planners in the capital cities support TBEs not only to attract tourists but are also guided by the rationale of being the centre of the nation and the country.
The methods of data collection included qualitative interviewing and document analysis. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with city policy makers and cultural institutions that have hosted TBEs. The interviews helped to access the information pertinent to the ways city
tourism and events authorities approach TBEs and utilise these exhibitions in city marketing. Documents were used to navigate the specifics of the contexts, define the questions for interviews and provide supplementary and corroborative data. Thematic analysis was applied to achieve a comprehensive understanding of the topic and address the research objectives.
An integrative model is developed that reveals the ways TBEs can contribute to the experiential dimension of a city’s
tourism offering, its
tourism product mix, brand image and long term
tourism marketing objectives. The findings demonstrate that TBEs can be valuable assets for city
event planners and destination marketers. The brand stature of these events is remarkably powerful; they can provide enriching and engaging experiences for visitors.
This research reconceptualises the TBE as a major city
event. The results present an important contribution to the events and
tourism literature in advancing understanding of the role TBEs can play in
tourism offerings, city events agendas and the marketing of cities. The research…
