In this study, I empirically examine the determinants of firms’ derivatives usage. Theory suggests that market exposure, manager-shareholder agency conflicts, and the threats of financial distress and underinvestment can all motivate derivatives usage. Most previous studies attempt to test these ‘theories of optimal derivatives usage’ empirically by regressing some measure of derivatives usage on a range of accounting proxies for these firm attributes. I use a similar approach in this study. However, since these theories do not discriminate between different categories of derivatives - foreign currency (FX), interest rate (IR) and commodity price (CP) - most previous studies examine either general derivatives usage or only one of these categories of derivatives. Instead, I separately examine what motivates firms’ binary (yes/no) decisions to use foreign currency (FX), interest rate (IR) and commodity price (CP) derivatives. Furthermore, owing to a lack of accessible data, most previous studies restrict the analysis to the binary usage decision. This study overcomes that limiation by assembling a unique dataset to examine whether what motivates firms’ binary usage decisions differs from what motivates the extent of their derivatives usage. Lastly, recent studies suggest that firms’ derivatives decisions are codetermined with other corporate financing policies. Hence, I also examine what motivates two of firms’ capital structure decisions: the level and the maturity of debt. Using a sample of 710 large, non-financial, Eurozone firms, I gather two years of data on firms’ FX, IR and CP notional derivatives usage from annual report disclosures. Many of the accounting measures, which are traditionally used as proxies for the firm attributes thought to motivate derivatives usage, are readily available on databases such as DataStream. However, I also manually gather a number of customized variables from annual report disclosures to ensure that the proxies used in this study are as close as possible to the firm attributes they are intended to represent. I use a Tobit model to model each category of derivatives usage as a singular decision and compare this to a two-step model similar to Cragg’s (1971), in which the derivatives decision is modeled as a two-step process: first, the decision to use and second, the decision of how much to use. In robustness tests, I attempt to control for sample selection bias using a Heckman (1976, 1979) model, omitted variables bias using a fixed effects model, and simultaneity bias using a two stage least squares (2SLS) model. I find that firms’ FX derivatives decisions are motivated by foreign currency exposure, economies of scale, and liquidity concerns. On the other hand, their IR derivatives decisions are motivated by underinvestment and financial distress costs, with particular emphasis on capital structure. This PhD dissertation presents four essays about the effects of the recent global financial crisis on the European Economic and Monetary Union in order to highlight the following critical issues: (a) What are the consequences of adopting Stabilization Programs in the economies? (b) Whether the economies addressed issues regarding the consequences of the recent financial crisis or not. (c) Whether the climate of economic uncertainty has affected credit supply and the evolution of non-performing loans in the economies, and (d) whether the cultural background of societies affects the innovative performance of the economies. The link between those issues lies on the fact that they are being considered in the context of the Eurozone or the European Union 27 (EU-27) and on that the analysis covers time periods that include the period of the recent global financial crisis. In that way, this PhD dissertation seeks to clarify the impact of the recent global financial crisis on these issues in Europe, to show off the imbalances in the European Economic and Monetary Union and to highlight issues related to the effectiveness of crisis management. The results of the empirical analysis of the four essays presented in this PhD dissertation are particularly important and useful for policy makers and economic actors, but also for those interested on the effects of the recent global financial crisis on the European economy. Each chapter is autonomous, but it maintains uniformity in the structure of its presentation, since for each chapter there is presented the scope, the contribution to the bibliography, the theoretical basis of the analysis, the data used, the methodology, the empirical results, the discussion of the results, the conclusions and policy implications.

Η διδακτορική διατριβή παρουσιάζει τέσσερα δοκίμια σχετικά με τις επιδράσεις της πρόσφατης παγκόσμιας χρηματοπιστωτικής κρίσης στην ευρωπαϊκή οικονομική και νομισματική ένωση, με σκοπό να αναδειχθούν τα εξής κρίσιμα ζητήματα: α) ποιες είναι οι επιδράσεις της υιοθέτησης Προγραμμάτων Σταθεροποίησης στις οικονομίες, β) πόσο επιτυχημένη κρίνεται η διαχείριση της κρίσης από τις οικονομίες, γ) πως το κλίμα αβεβαιότητας έχει επηρεάσει την παροχή πιστώσεων και την εξέλιξη των μη εξυπηρετούμενων δανείων, και δ) εάν το πολιτισμικό υπόβαθρο των κοινωνιών επηρεάζει τις καινοτομικές επιδόσεις των οικονομιών. Pirmoje darbo dalyje analizuojami infliacijos, valdžios sektoriaus metinio biudžeto deficito ir bendrosios skolos, ilgalaikių Vyriausybės vertybinių popierių palūkanų normos bei šalių dalyvavimo antrajame valiutų kurso mechanizme (VKM II) teoriniai aspektai – pateikiama kiekvieno iš šių kriterijų samprata, analizuojamos atsiradimo priežastys bei pasekmės, nagrinėjami vieną ar kitą reiškinį lemiantys veiksniai, pateikiami su šių makroekonominių rodiklių pokyčiais susijusių problemų sprendimo būdai. Antrojoje darbo dalyje aptariami tyrimui atlikti naudoti kiekybiniai ir kokybiniai metodai bei įvertinama jų taikymo galimybė konvergencijos kriterijų įvertinimui. Trečiojoje darbo dalyje tiriama Lietuvos ir Slovėnijos infliacijos, valdžios sektoriaus metinio biudžeto deficito ir bendrosios skolos, ilgalaikių Vyriausybės vertybinių popierių (VVP) palūkanų normos ir nacionalinės valiutos stabilumo lygio dinamika 2000-2008 m. ir identifikuojami tokį kitimą lėmę veiksniai bei priežastys. Taip pat įvertinamos Lietuvos perspektyvos ateityje įsivesti bendrąją ES valiutą – eurą ir aptariama Slovėnijos narystės euro zonoje nauda šaliai.

In the Final Master’s Degree Work there are evaluated Lithuania and Slovenia‘s inflations, government‘s annual budget deficit and gross debts, long-term government stock interest rate and national currency stability level conformity to the convergence criteria in 2000-2008. The first part of the paper explores theoretical aspects of inflation, government‘s annual budget deficit and gross debts, long-term government stock interest rate and participation of the countries in ERM II – conceptions of every of those criteria are presented, the reasons and outcomes of the appearance are being analysed, factors causing one or another occurrence are being examined, solving methods for the problems related to these macroeconomical indexes are being introduced. In the third part of the work Lithuania and Slovenia‘s inflation, long-term government‘s annual budget deficit and gross debts, long-term government stock interest rate and national currency stability level dynamics in 2000-2008 are researched and the factors and reasons that caused this kind of change are identified. Also, perspectives of Lithuania in the future to introduce the common EU currency – euro are being estimated and benefit of the Slovenia membership in the euro zone to the country is being discussed.

▼ This thesis contains four chapters. In the first chapter, I provide a structured survey of balance of payments (BP) constrained growth models. Unlike other surveys, this chapter reviews the various mechanisms of relative price adjustments, undertakes a comprehensive review of capital flows and surveys the literature on endogenous trade elasticities. The second chapter contributes to the literature on technological gaps and BP constrained growth by developing a theoretical framework to account for the ambiguous effects of capital inflows on shortand medium-run growth. The model shows that when a technological gap exists between two countries in an Economic and Monetary Union (EMU) and it exceeds a critical threshold, capital flows toward the technological laggard deteriorate its production structure and reduce its BP constrained growth rate. Several conclusions are derived. The size of the technological gap and demand-regimes are consequential for relative economic performance and regional cohesion. Capital flows within a community can produce both convergence and divergence effects. Finally, if political consensus is lacking at the regional level as to the design framework for a Fiscal Union, then the principal convergence criteria must include demand-regimes and the size of the technological gap. The third chapter endogenizes the trade elasticities as a an ambiguous function of the wage share but a positive function of the inverted technological gap. When the laggard economy has a small capital goods producing sector, high inequality and conspicuous consumption, a tradeoff emerges between distribution and technological convergence. However, the tradeoff becomes less binding if an EMU provides for investments in technological innovation and emulation that assist the catching-up process. The fourth chapter incorporates the monetary economy into a three-incomes post-Kaleckian model. It demonstrates how a devaluation can induce contractionary effects by lowering the profit share and raising the loan rate. These results are driven by oligopolistic bankers who exercise market power in the bond and loan markets. Moreover, the chapter demonstrates that monetary policy increases bankers’ rent share, which lowers the rate of firm-level innovation. These results imply that the effects of a devaluation depend on the degree of competition in the banking sector, the size of banks’ foreign assets- and loan-capital ratios and whether or not the economy is in a regime of excess reserves.

The aim of this research is to examine the impact of the European Union (EU) integration process on the EU democratic deficit. Each of these two theoretical fields has attracted a considerable volume of scholarship. However, the relationship between them is rarely examined in detail. To achieve this aim, the measures adopted to respond to the Eurozone crisis at the EU level, and, more specifically, the decision-making processes introduced or altered by these measures, are assumed as a case study. It is, by now, clear that the Eurozone crisis, and the relevant supranational measures, have fundamentally and extensively modified the EU operating framework and decision-making processes. This has, in turn, signaled a change in the integration process of the EU, unavoidably affecting, among others, its democratic deficit. At first, the different elements, characteristics, foundations, and ontological origins of different concepts included in each of the above two theoretical fields, are analyzed. In terms of EU integration theories, the three grand-level theories are examined: intergovernmentalism, neofunctionalism, and postfunctionalism. The literature on the EU democratic deficit includes three different approaches: Input, Output, and Throughput. Aside from an in-depth study of these fields, the above the above analysis, in particular for the EU democratic deficit scholarship, aims at comprehensively re-grouping the insights offered by the three approaches around key thematic areas, based on which a qualitative evaluation of the impact of the crisis measures can be conducted. Using the method of analytic narratives, based on textual analysis and semi-structured interviews, the processes introduced by each of the crisis measures, separated into those aimed at the provision of financial assistance to member states and those aimed at enhanced coordination between member states, are analyzed in detail. All the above elements are combined to determine, first, the direction of the EU integration process after the assumption of the crisis measures, second, the impact of those measures on the EU democratic deficit, and third, what the above case study analysis indicates about the broader impact of the EU integration process on the EU democratic deficit.

Ο στόχος της παρούσης έρευνας είναι η εκτίμηση των επιπτώσεων της διαδικασίας της ενοποίησης της Ευρωπαϊκής Ένωσης (ΕΕ) όσον αφορά στα μέτρα που ελήφθησαν σε Ευρωπαϊκό (υπερεθνικό) επίπεδο για την κρίση της Ευρωζώνης, στο δημοκρατικό έλλειμα της ΕΕ. This doctoral thesis is divided into five chapters, which are connecting to each other as they combine a common case of study in eurozone. The first chapter describes a theoretical approach of Europe and Eurozone, as well as a graphical representation of the main macroeconomic variables. The commentary on the findings and their evaluation will be divided into three different groups (Core - Periphery - New Entrants), the global financial crisis of 2008 found the Eurozone unprepared and weak to cope with the imbalances. This fact has been described within three research papers which study the following issues: (a) the impact of the crisis on the business cycles of the countries associated with it,(b) the validity of the Okun Law in eurozone countries with a Structural Panel- VAR and shocks decomposition based on impulse response function, and(c) the effects of the quantitative easing program in the economies of the eurozone countries.The common factor of the three papers, is the study of the convergence or divergence between the countries of the Periphery with the Core ones. Adjustment programs, which are implemented mainly in the countries of the South Europe, may have "rebuilt" the budgets of the countries, but at the same time created citizens' concerns about the benefits of the country's integration into the single currency. Countries with different levels of competitiveness and productivity struggle to coexist in a monetary union and inequalities grow in times of crisis. The studies may be autonomous under the same umbrella of countries categorization as well as the effects of the crisis, and the relevant appearance of appropriate uniformity. Empirical findings are particularly useful both at the scientific level as well as the economic policy making of the Eurozone countries. The last chapter summarizes the preceding, introduces proposals for deepening European integration and enhancing the future of the Eurozone.

Η παρούσα διδακτορική διατριβή χωρίζεται σε πέντε ανεξάρτητα κεφάλαια, τα οποία όμως συνδυάζονται μεταξύ τους, αφού έχουν κοινή περίπτωση μελέτης την ευρωζώνη και τις ανισορροπίες στο εσωτερικό της. Στο πρώτο κεφάλαιο, παρουσιάζουμε μια θεωρητική προσέγγιση της Ευρώπης και της ευρωζώνης, καθώς και γραφική απεικόνιση των κυριότερων μακροοικονομικών μεταβλητών. Ο σχολιασμός των ευρημάτων και η αξιολόγησή τους, θα γίνει χωρίζοντας σε τρεις διαφορετικές ομάδες (Κέντρο - Περιφέρεια - Νεοεισερχόμενες). Η παγκόσμια χρηματοπιστωτική κρίση του 2008 βρήκε την ευρωζώνη απροετοίμαστη και αδύναμη να ανταπεξέλθει στις διαταραχές που εμφανίστηκαν. Στη συνέχεια, παρουσιάζουμε τρεις ερευνητικές εργασίες, στις οποίες εξετάζουμε κατά σειρά, α) την επίδραση της κρίσης στους οικονομικούς κύκλους των χωρών, β) κατά πόσο ισχύει ο Νόμος του Okun στις χώρες του ενιαίου νομίσματος σήμερα, με την εφαρμογή μια διαφορετικής μεθοδολογίας αλλά και το ρόλο των μεταρρυθμίσεων στην εξομάλυνση των διαταραχών, και γ) την επίδραση του προγράμματος ποσοτικής χαλάρωσης στις οικονομίες των χωρών. A presente investigação pretende explicar a diferença entre o valor de mercado e o valor contabilístico de bancos comerciais, através de variáveis contabilísticas específicas. Este estudo aplica o modelo proposto por Begley, Chamberlain e Li (2006) a uma amostra composta por bancos sedeados na Zona Euro. O modelo relaciona variáveis contabilísticas específicas de bancos com a diferença entre valor de mercado e valor contabilístico (goodwill), criando uma perspectiva do negócio da banca assente em actividades associadas a determinados activos e passivos. O modelo identifica as actividades de concessão de crédito (CC) e de tomada de depósitos (TD) como determinantes na definição do goodwill, correspondentes ao papel tradicional da banca de intermediação financeira. Os resultados empíricos demonstram que o goodwill dos bancos da Zona Euro deriva fundamentalmente da CC. Da TD não deriva valor para além do seu valor contabilístico, apesar de os rendimentos de serviços a clientes recebidos na forma de comissões incorporarem valor futuro, já que é esperado que o relacionamento entre os clientes e o banco perdure. Resultados sugerem que os serviços a clientes dos bancos da Zona Euro estão associados à CC em detrimento da TD. Contudo, tal como observado em estudos anteriores, fica patente a indicação de que as actividades identificadas apresentam um alcance limitado sobre o negócio da banca, pois os activos e passivos operacionais designados não contemplam todos os itens não valorizados ao seu valor de mercado no balanço dos bancos. Esta conclusão aponta para a inclusão de futuras expansões do modelo.

The present research aims to explain the difference between market and book value of banks, through bank-specific accounting measures. This study applies the theoretical model proposed by Begley, Chamberlain and Li (2006) on a sample composed by banks settled on Eurozone. Focused on banking business dynamics and its unique specificity, this line of work outstands against the prevalence of manufacturing settings on valuation research literature. The model relates banking-specific accounting measures with the difference between market and book value (which corresponds to goodwill), creating an activity-based perspective of banking business with associated financial assets and liabilities. The model identifies lending and borrowing activities as the key value drivers of goodwill, embodying the banking traditional role of financial intermediation of deposits/loans. Empirical proof states that Eurozone banks unrecorded value lies mostly on lending activity rather than on borrowing activity. Deposit taking does not endorse additional value beyond its book value, although fee income garnered through financial services provided to customers is recognized to incorporate future value, since it is expected that the relationship between the bank and the customer endures. Esta dissertação pretende analisar o papel do Banco Central Europeu (BCE) na União Europeia e na crise da zona euro. Especialmente, procura compreender se a arquitetura inicial sobre a qual o BCE foi construído era adequada para responder aos desafios que se vieram colocar durante a crise, procurando analisar as alterações motivadas pelo desenvolvimento da crise. O BCE é uma instituição fundamental para a união monetária. Estando no centro da questão, dadas as características financeira e bancária da crise, o BCE tem vindo a enfrentar muitos desafios. Muitos têm criticado o papel do BCE na crise da zona euro, realçando a sua limitação de poderes pelos Tratados e a sua lentidão na resolução dos problemas de liquidez dos estados membros. Outros consideram que o BCE tem sido a instituição determinante para a resolução da crise. Mas durante o período em que a crise se foi aprofundando, e em que a crise financeira inicial evoluiu para a crise da zona euro, o BCE enfrentou e continua a enfrentar muitos desafios e mudanças, assumindo um papel decisivo na crise. No Sistema Monetário Europeu, o BCE é agora uma instituição mais forte com mais instrumentos e novos poderes. A União Europeia enfrentou o seu maior desafio e conseguiu sobreviver unida pelo euro. Contudo, o BCE, que tinha a estabilidade de preços como o seu principal objetivo, enfrenta agora o perigo de deflação. Manter a estabilidade financeira é agora um objetivo fundamental e a regulação das instituições financeiras é fundamental para a estabilidade da zona euro. Uma união bancária eficaz, capaz de regular a integração financeira e de efetuar uma supervisão bancária centralizada adequada é fundamental para a continuidade da zona euro. Nesta presumível fase final da crise europeia, o BCE tornou-se num banco central muito mais interventivo devido às circunstâncias excepcionais que tem vindo a enfrentar. Esta dissertação começa por caracterizar o papel de um banco central numa união monetária e os seus constrangimentos. Seguidamente, expõe as políticas, os instrumentos e a arquitetura original do BCE. No final, é abordado concretamente o papel do BCE na crise da zona euro com a análise paramétrica dos efeitos das políticas do BCE nas taxas de juro das dívidas soberanas.

This dissertation is an attempt to explain the role of the European Central Bank (ECB) in the European Union and in the Eurozone crisis. In depth, it attempts to comprehend if the initial framework on which the ECB was built was designed to respond to the problems faced by the Eurozone, and to analyze the changes motivated by the course of the Eurozone crisis. Perante um crescimento acentuado na transação de fluxos de investimento direto estrangeiro (IDE) e sabendo que estes cada vez são mais importantes no desenvolvimento económico dos países que o recebem, é do interesse de todas as economias saber como o podem atrair este tipo de investimento. De entre vários determinantes que afetam os fluxos de IDE e a variabilidade das taxas de câmbio vem ajudar a responder a uma questão que se tem colocado entre muitos países da Europa, mais concretamente da Zona Euro: Será que a adesão ao euro foi positiva? Do ponto de vista dos fluxos de IDE, os resultados mostram que nações cuja moeda única é o euro, beneficiam de um aumento na entrada de investimento estrangeiro ceteris paribus. Esta conclusão é especialmente evidente se se analisarem os fluxos de IDE entre economias da Zona Euro. Os fatores principais que ajudam a explicar esta situação são a redução dos custos de transação e uma maior facilidade de integração económica que permitiram essencialmente às economias menos desenvolvidas investir no mercado internacional. A análise aos modelos gravitacionais utilizados é feita através do estimador OLS e embora não seja o mais apropriado para este estudo, apresenta resultados idênticos ao modelo alternativo, que para o efeito é o estimador de efeitos fixos.

Faced with a sharp rise in transaction flows of foreign direct investment (FDI) and knowing that these are becoming increasingly more important in the economic development of the countries that receive it, is in the interest of all economies to know how to attract this type of investment. Among various determinants affecting FDI flows, the variability of exchange rates helps answering a question that has been placed in many countries of Europe, more specifically in the Eurozone: was joining the euro a good move to make? Regarding FDI flows, the results show that countries whose currency is the euro, benefit from an increase in the entry of foreign investment, ceteris paribus. This conclusion is particularly evident when looking at the FDI flows between Eurozone economies. The main factors that help explain this increase are the reduction of transaction costs and the greater ease of economic integration that allow, essentially the less developed economies, to invest in the international market. The analysis is done studying gravity models through the OLS estimator and though is not the most appropriate way to perform this study, it shows similar results to the alternative model, which is done using the fixed effects estimator.

▼ The present study proposes a model, termed the hybrid model, to explain fiscal-policy responses to financial crises. Although it is applied throughout the present study to the Eurozone, the model’s geographic and substantive scope apply more broadly. Combining and building upon past approaches, the hybrid model proposes three independent variables: partisanship, political capacity, and external actors. The model builds on the literature’s three dominant approaches: partisan, domestic approaches; approaches that emphasize convergence; and approaches that emphasize divergence, represented here primarily by the Varieties of Capitalism (VoC) literature. The hybrid model integrates the domestic emphasis of the partisan approach with the international emphases of the convergence and, to some extent, VoC approaches. The hybrid model builds on the domestic politics of the partisan approach by integrating coalition logic and the tension between coalition partners into the partisan approach’s political landscape. The model also advances the convergence and VoC approaches by providing an explanation for variation in the pressure of financial markets, both over time and across countries, which mediates the influence of external actors in the domestic affairs of sample countries. In addition, with respect to the dependent variable, the present study develops a disaggregated measure that accounts for the diverse distributional implications of fiscal policies’ various dimensions. With respect to empirics, the present study employs a combination of quantitative and qualitative methods. Broadly, the large-N results provide support for the hybrid model, particularly as it pertains to partisanship. Event analyses and case studies support the role of external actors; the empirics show the degree to which financial-market pressure mediates the influence of external actors. Combined, the quantitative and qualitative approaches indicate problems with consonance, the particular dimension of political capacity considered in the present study. Both quantitative and qualitative results reveal that consonance, i.e., between-party tensions in coalition governments, provides an incomplete characterization of the factors influencing the political capacity of single-party and coalition governments. The case studies suggest that within-party tensions and party-system strength, as additional measures of political capacity, play key roles in shaping fiscal-policy responses. The empirics also confirm the importance of disaggregating fiscal policy, the dependent variable, beyond the broad measures of fiscal deficit, expenditure, and revenue adopted in the present literature.
