▼ This thesis represents a study into some central aspects of the notion of eternity. It proposes to explore ways in which the notion, rather than being dismissed as merely fictional or abstract, warrants an investigation into how the human being may be able to realize its reality The thesis argues in favour of a constructive cognitive access to the notion of eternity such that it can be seen to have reality through the active unification and perfection of our reason and of our moral being. The basic strategic approach, reflected in the thesis' structure, comprises the discussion of three main ideas or themes fundamental to metaphysics, which are central to the discussed means to render the notion of eternity real: A thesis about the inseparability of theoretical reason and a self-understanding of the human being as a moral being, a re-investigation of the notion of ideas in relation to the substantiality of things and an exploration of ways in which eternity is implied in existence. These three areas and perspectives are investigated independently and contain distinct arguments which are grounded in an attempt to render the concept of the eternality of truth intelligible. At the same time, each of the three thematic areas rests upon a bundle of arguments which can be organized around a systematic core. The thesis of the integrated approach to the theoretical/moral distinction argues (1) that thought forms the ground of the notion of the good and is the source of principles, (2) that thinking and the emotions are inseparable such that the emotions also reflect a person's ethical situation and (3) that there is no non-ethical stance to a philosophical position. The re-evaluation of the notion of ideas comprises (1) a general refutation of materialism and (2) a discussion of the ways in which ideas positively capture and constitute what is real. The third theme explores the relation between some conditions of existence and eternity through (1) a discussion of movement, (2) an analysis of the form of perception and order, (3) an investigation of the idea of the un-self-supporting reality of the world of becoming and ( 4) a speculative approach regarding an intelligence in all things. The thesis seeks to connect the three streams in loose and implicit ways and cautions against a forced philosophical systematization that would only artificially converge them. However, a final chapter provides a more synthetic and synoptic outlook without propounding a simplified or systematically foundational conclusion through an attempt to revisit the notions of Form, Will and Idea.

A pesquisa intenta verificar como se dá o itinerário de ascensão do conhecimento da verdade e das ciências, conforme a descrição apresentada no De libero arbítrio, com apoio nos paralelos constantes dos diálogos De ordine e De quantitate animae, compostos por Agostinho no período Cassicíaco-Roma (386-396 d.C). Tomando como referência a ascensão intelectual apresentada no livro II do De libero arbitrio, e tendo por base as noções de condução/guia e julgamento/instituição aplicadas à razão, verificamos como o itinerário da alma no conhecimento probatório da realidade divina apresenta, para além da escalada em subida hierarquizante do sensível até Deus, o conhecimento como o movimento de perfazimento da realidade conhecida em eternidade, dado que a razão assenta e está fundamentada na verdade eterna e imutável, e todo ato cognitivo é por ela conduzido/orientado e adjudicado/instituído, o que, em última instância, equivale a afirmar que a eternidade se perfaz na realidade conhecida, precisamente no átimo temporal do instante em que se reconhece qualquer conhecimento como verdadeiro. Para tanto, trata-se de verificar como, em cada nível do conhecimento em ascensão, o passo seguinte está suposto - na verdade o contém e perfaz, fundamentando-o - no anterior, de maneira que a etapa posterior, necessária e permanentemente, ratifica e adjudica a etapa anterior. E, assim como o instante, ao instituir a totalidade temporal, é figuração da eternidade2, o conhecimento em ascensão perfaz e figura a absolutidade na veracidade, através da percepção imediata e perenemente simultânea ao seu perfazimento da totalidade da ordenação harmoniosa e universal dos seres (De ordine); da funcionalidade do ato imaginativo presente na simultaneidade verificada entre as percepções sensível/concreta e interior/espiritual (De quantitate animae); bem como nos sobreditos atos de condução e julgamento efetuados no perfazimento do conhecimento universal (De líbero arbitrio)

This dissertation intends see the occurrence of the itinerary of souls ascension in the knowledge of truth and science, according to the description given in De libero arbitrio, with suport in the parallels lectures presents in the dialogues De ordine and De quantitate animae, composed in the Augustines Cassissiacum - Rome period (386-396 AD). Referring to intelectual ascension exposted in Book II of De libero arbitrio, and based on the notions of driving/guide and judgment/institution, in the rational way, we verified like the itinerary of the soul in probatory knowledge of divine reality shows, in addition to climbing \"hierarchical elevationöf a sensibility to God, the knowledge of how the movement of factoring of reality known in eternity, as the reason rests and is founded on the eternal and unchangeable truth, and every cognitive act is driven/oriented and award/established by reason, which, ultimately, is equivalent to saying that eternity is known totals in this reality, precisely in the temporal instant that one recognizes any knowledge as true. NA cidade de Deus, Agostinho apresenta ambivalente concepção de política, pois a política adquire ou positividade ou negatividade conforme a identidade ou a contradição de uma civitas ou res publica consigo mesma. Mais precisamente, a cidade celeste, que guarda dois modos de existência, um na história, outro na eternidade, conquista progressivamente identidade na medida em que na história há processo coerente dela em direção a seu modo de existência por excelência, na eternidade; já a cidade terrena existe na história em contradição e conflito, ao tornar-se escrava da própria libido de dominação, de maneira que sua história é de progressiva danação e perda de ser. Uma cidade guarda, pois, estatuto político a despeito de sua orientação ou de sua desorientação moral. Além do mais, o fundamento da política agostiniana não é nem a natureza, nem a razão. Assim, em declarada ruptura com a reflexão política ciceroniana, Agostinho empreende uma desnaturalização da política e fundamenta-a em certo conceito de vontade. Nosso propósito será investigar os traços do voluntarismo político agostiniano por meio da gênese, aqui denominada exórdio, do modo de existência histórico de ambas as cidades.

In the City of God, Augustine shows an ambivalent conception of politics, because the politics acquires positivity or negativity according to the identity or contradiction of a civitas or res publica with itself. More precisely, the celestial city, which has two modes of existence, one in the history, other in the eternity, progressively conquers identity as in history succeeds a coherent process towards its genuine mode of existence, in eternity. On the other hand, the earthly city exists in the history in contradiction and conflict in becoming slave of its own libidinousness of dominance so that its history is one of a progressive damnation and lost of being. Therefore a city holds political statute in despite of its moral orientation or disorientation. Moreover, the Augustinian foundation of politics is neither the nature nor the reason. Thus, notably against Cicero, Augustine enterprises a denaturalization of politics and founds it in a certain concept of will. Our purpose will be to inquire into the features of the Augustinian political voluntarism by means of the historical mode of existence genesis, or beginning, of both cities.

Ao afirmar que a sua filosofia vê na duração o próprio tecido de que a realidade é feita, no último capítulo de A evolução criadora, Bergson explicita o seu projeto de construção de uma nova metafísica. Sabemos que a originalidade de sua empreitada está fundamentalmente nessa exigência da apreensão do tempo, sua transitoriedade e fluidez, como aquilo de que a realidade é feita. Trata-se de declarar a realidade temporal como definição da própria existência do mundo e da experiência humana sem a duração, não se pode falar em causalidade efetiva ou livre escolha. Sendo assim, a exigência de uma metafísica da duração se colocaria de imediato em contraposição não a uma filosofia somente, mas à história da filosófica como um todo, cuja crítica é essencial para a construção e consolidação do pensamento bergsoniano. Contudo, pensamos que, na tradição filosófica, destaca-se um autor com quem Bergson dialogou intensamente, declaradamente ou não, e que pouco esteve presente nos trabalhos dos estudiosos do seu pensamento: Espinosa. Pretendemos reconstituir esse diálogo a partir de um campo de comunicação que possibilite revelar seus pontos de entrecruzamento, confrontação e encontro. Talvez assim, o desencontro maior - entre uma filosofia da duração e, outra, da eternidade- mostre-se, ao fim e ao cabo, apenas aparente.

By stating that his philosophy \"sees in duration the own tissue that reality is madeïn the last chapter of Creative Evolution, Bergson explains his project to build a new metaphysics. We know that the originality of his work is based in this exigency of the sense time, its transience and fluidity, as that from which reality is made. It is time to declare the temporal reality as definition of the own existence of the world and human experience without the duration one can not speak in effective causality or free choice. Thus, the requirement of a metaphysics of duration is put immediately in opposition not only to one philosophy, but the history of philosophy as a whole, whose criticism is essential to building and consolidating of the Bergson\'s thought. However, we believe that, in the philosophical tradition, there is an author with whom Bergson spoke intensely, openly or not, and that little was present in the work of scholars of his thought: Espinosa. We intend to reconstruct this dialogue from a communication space that allows to reveal their points of intersection, confrontation and meeting. Perhaps then the biggest mismatch - between a philosophy of duration, and another, of eternity-shows, after all, only apparent.

Numerosos são os estudos sobre a eternidade na filosofia de Espinosa, contudo, poucas são as pesquisas sobre o tempo e a duração, afinal, por que perguntar-se sobre o tempo numa filosofia da eternidade? Diferentemente dos seus primeiros escritos, na sua obra máxima, a Ética, a singularidade da definição espinosana da eternidade e da duração encontra-se justamente em se restringir à relação entre essência e existência, sem qualquer relação com o tempo. Contudo, acompanhando a gênese dos conceitos de tempo, duração e eternidade, desde os seus primeiros escritos até a Ética, veremos como este deslocamento conceitual revela um duplo movimento: é por desvincular o tempo da duração e da eternidade que a existência ganhará uma profundidade ontológica, ética e política; por outro lado, o tempo ganhará preponderante papel na constituição da imaginação. There are numerous studies about the eternity in Spinozas philosophy, however, there are few researches about the time and duration, after all, why to ask on the times quote in a philosophy of the eternity? Differently of his first writings, in Ethics, the singularity of Spinozas definition of eternity and duration is exactly going to restrict essence and existence relation, without any relation with time. However, following the time, duration and eternity concepts genesis, since his first writings until the Ethics, we will see how this conceptual displacement opens to a double movement: for separating duration and eternity from time, the human existence will gain a ontological, ethical and politics depth; on the other hand, time will gain prominent role in the imaginations constitution. In this double movement, we will understand how these concepts, duration and eternity, that has its native land in ontological scope, allows us to illuminate other landscapes directly tied with the problem of the temporality: the passional life and the political life.

A presente tese de doutorado investiga como, na hipótese cosmológica do eterno retorno do mesmo, ou seja, na possilidade de uma eternidade temporal, Nietzsche julgou encontrar uma nova medida de valor para realizar a transvaloração de todos os valores. Para isso, foi necessário estudarmos a formação da noção de valor em seu pensamento. Por meio dela buscamos compreender que, ao diagnosticar a morte de Deus, sua atenção estava concentrada, fundamentalmente, na perda da medida de valor que determinava todos os valores até então existentes. E se, por um lado, a desvalorização dos valores, e o consequente avanço do niilismo, serão seus alvos de preocupação e crítica, por outro, é o anelo incondicional ao pensamento do eterno retorno, dependente de uma adesão ao amor fati, que forma sua filosofia da afirmação. Considerando que a hipótese cosmológica do eterno retorno trata de uma eternidade no tempo, analisamos inicialmente a relação entre tempo e eternidade no contexto da história da filosofia. O percurso dos gregos antigos até Kant torna possível compreender como a reflexão ocidental passa a orbitar em torno da eternidade atemporal. De outra parte, é somente a fundação e o desenvolvimento da termodinâmica que reacende a discussão, presente já no pensamento grego antigo, sobre se o curso do mundo é ou não cíclico. Uma vez que Nietzsche toma partido neste debate para pensar uma nova medida para os valores, procuramos estudar a gênese da noção de valor nas obras que precedem a anotação realizada sobre o eterno retorno em agosto de 1881. Desenvolvida a partir de uma reflexão que pensa a constituição da moral, a noção de valor atinge uma radicalidade maior do que em Adam Smith no âmbito da economia política. Buscando sustentar que o pensamento do eterno retorno é a condição de possibilidade da transvaloração, investigamos o conjunto dos escritos de Nietzsche compreendidos entre 1881 e 1888. Analisando o modo como o tema se manifesta na obra publicada e nos fragmentos póstumos, procuramos mostrar que a hipótese cosmológica do retorno tanto possibilita a criação de novos valores quanto coloca o problema do eterno retorno do niilismo. Por fim, preocupamo-nos em reconstituir o itinerário da reflexão de Nietzsche para pensar por que, somente no derradeiro ano de sua filosofia, ele leva a termo a tarefa da transvaloração de todos os valores.

This thesis investigates how was it possible for Nietzsche to see in the cosmological hypothesis of eternal return of the same (that is, in the possibility of a temporal eternity) a new value measure by which transvaluation of all values could be achieved. We have investigated how Nietzsche shaped his notion of value and how his diagnosis of Gods death evidenced his concern with the lost of those value-measures which were determinant for all values until his time. Therefore, his affirmative philosophy is constituted by an apparently contradictory pair of concerns. ▼ This thesis considers the interaction of ethno-national and spiritual identities in a postsocialist, Orthodox context. It demonstrates the ways in which those identities mutually reinforce one another, and the tensions which this inevitably produces. Overall, it heeds Herzfeld’s (2002) suggestion that the Orthodox desire for ‘reenchantment’ produces ‘a very different understanding of the relationship among personhood, religion, and national identity’ to ones familiar in Protestant settings in the West. Ethnographically speaking, it is a study of a demographically-diverse network of practising Orthodox Christians (‘vernici’, lit. believers) in the central Serbian town of Kraljevo. Whilst the majority of Serbians today identify as ‘Orthodox’ – national and confessional identity being widely perceived as synonymous in post-Yugoslav Serbia – only a relative minority engage in what vernici would call ‘liturgical life’. Beyond claiming a ‘traditional’ Orthodox identity through ethnic affiliation, these Christians actively seek to lead lives centred on the Divine Liturgy, lives structured around fasting, prayer, confession and receiving Divine Communion regularly. The thesis, sitting at the intersection of the anthropologies of Christianity and Postsocialism, makes two tightly interlocking claims: one concerning the temporality of Orthodox life and the other concerning a conception of the Serbian people (srpski narod), seen by my interlocutors as a historically-rooted, moral-cum-ethnic collectivity. It argues that, for vernici, ‘eternity’ (večnost) – perceived as being proximate, not chronologically distant – drives everyday life, imbuing it with coherence and direction. However, it also suggests that such eschatological claims are made within the framework of an understanding of Serbian peoplehood. Eschatology is thus seen as requiring national-historical embeddedness, a contention made to feel more urgent in the wake of Yugoslav socialism when, vernici lament, Serbian identity was attacked. Despite being integrated members of Serbian society, structurally speaking vernici inhabit a peculiar position: marginalized (sometimes stigmatized) for their religious practice and yet marshalling ideas about a collective identity and way of life which they claim to be essential for all Serbs. However, the vernici’s persistent (negatively-inflected) critical push against what they see as an indifferent, non-practising society is generative for liturgical life, allowing for the emergence of powerful discourses about ‘true’, ‘sincere’ Christians forever being a minority. Moreover, the contingencies of this world – where people suffer and deviate – only serve to shore up certainty about the arduous yet transient nature of this fallen, temporal dimension, and the nearness of the eternal one. The thesis proceeds through analysis of themes and practices recurrent in the lives of vernici, such as repentance, fasting, longing for ‘our history’, suffering, and the practice of memorial rituals. Through his political works, Jean-Jacques Rousseau stresses the stages of transition from personal time of primitive man to collective time of man within society. According to the writer, the equation of ideas with attitudes transformed conventional collective time into variable time, so he suggests that customs should be equated for the purposes of establishing collective time, thus transforming it into real time. Through his creative imagination he unites the collective past, present and future : in reference to calendar time he concludes that civil law is the only substitute for natural law. On the contrary, through his autobiography, he follows a reverse course and shows an interest not in calendar time but in physical and spiritual time, which are experienced simultaneously with biological time. He imprints the stages of transition from collective time of social man, which is divided between personal time and time dedicated to external relationships, to personal time, which is the only substitute between physical and fictions time. The restoration of unity among the personal past, prsent and future and his desire for eternity leads him to the abolition of time.

This doctoral dissertation seeks to present a reflection about faith and reason. To do this we occupied ourselves in investigating the concepts which characterize the phenomena observed in the theory of chaos according to physics-mathematics and, thus, employing these concepts – in a comparative analysis – the dialog in the construction of analogies was made possible with the goal of mentioning the relations of God with the world in the perspective of the Reformed Christian faith. For the goal to be reached, resources from the reading, review and systematization of a theoretical referential founded on authors in the areas of physics and mathematics dealing with the subject that was researched – physics-mathematics - were used: Ian G. Barbour, Amir D. Aczel, Edgar de Alencar Filho, Yoav Ben-Dov, Silvio Bergia, Umberto Bottazzini, Richard P. Brennan, Alberto Gaspar, Niccoló Guicciardini, Michio Kaku, Mario Livio, Gérard Lebrun, Paul L. Meyer, Richard Morris, Isaac Newton, Blaise Pascal, John Polkinghorne, Ilya Prigogine, David Ruelle, Raymond A. Serway, James Gleick, James D. Stein, Ian Stewart, Tipler – among others – and as to the Reformed Christian faith, the following were used: The Belgic Confession (1561), the Heidelberg Catechism (1563), the Second Helvetic Confession (1566), the Dort Canons (1619), the Westminster Confession of Faith (1647), the Westminster Small Catechism (1647), The Westminster Larger Catechism (1648). To be highlighted in these readings are the writings of the renowned theologian, Saint Augustine: The City of God, the Spirit and the Word, Nature and Grace, The Grace of Christ and Original Sin, Grace and Freedom, Correction and Grace, the Predestination of the Saints, the Gift of Perseverance, the Confessions and Free Will. The initial development took place in the perspective of the predominant concept in the theory of chaos which says there is a prevailing order within disorder, just as there is the manifestation of disorder within full order. In applying this concept, a parallel was made with the soteriological approach in which was presented that apparently unstructured and random phenomena are, in fact, obeying simple laws, and, therefore, apparently are similar to a behavior without law, even though being totally governed by law. Thus, one was left with deciphering which law it was. In the sequence of the study, an investigative approach was carried out about the relation involving the physics-mathematics concepts and the sustaining and strengthening pillars of the Reformed Christian Faith in which the conceptual part of time was presented in the person of Saint Augustine, and on the other side, the Newtonian theories which advance to the Einstein theories, culminating in an analogy to the writings presented by the bishop of Hippo. Finally, an analysis was carried out about infinity which, in the theological perspective, dealt with eternity and in the mathematical perspective an infinity larger than other infinities was demonstrated in an analogy between both sciences. Si la philosophie d’Emmanuel Levinas fut souvent présentée comme une philosophie de l’éthique, et fut identifiée à des notions telles que le visage, autrui ou la responsabilité, cette thèse vise à démontrer que ces notions se comprennent à partir d'un primat accorde au temps, voire d’une métaphysique de la temporalité. Il s’agira d'établir que la philosophie levinassienne inaugure une nouvelle philosophie du temps que nous pouvons qualifier de « discontinuiste », s’opposant aux pensées de la continuité comme la philosophie bergsonienne de la durée et husserlienne du flux. La constitution de la subjectivité par émergence et distinction d’avec l'existence atemporelle, encore nommée « l'il y a », son rapport au monde comme sa rencontre avec autrui ne se comprennent qu’à l’aune de leur temporalisation. Toutefois, cette structuration temporelle du sujet et de l’altérité invite à dégager différents types de temporalité et à spécifier l’essentielle dialectique entre le temps et l’autre.

If Emmanuel Levinas' philosophy has often been introduced as a philosophy of ethics, determined by famous notions such as the face, the other or the responsibility, this thesis aims at demonstrating that these notions can be understood thanks to the primacy of time, and to a metaphysics of temporality. The goal lies in explaining how Levinas' philosophy ushers a philosophy of time that we can qualify as « discontinuist », opposed to Bergson's philosophy of duration and Husserl's theory of time flow. Subjectivity is processed through a distinction with the atemporal existence or the « there is », the connection to the world and relations to the others can be appreciated thanks to the notion of temporalisation.However this temporal structuration of the subject and the otherness encourages us to make several distinctions between different types of temporality and to consider the essential dialectic between time and the other.

▼ However reluctant he may be about providing details, Karl Barth dares to affirm the coming resurrection, even in the strong corporeal sense of the Apostles Creed, “I believe in . . . the resurrection of the flesh.” At the heart of Barth’s creative approach is an equation between revelation and resurrection. Indeed, everything said about the human addressed now in revelation is to be said about the human at the coming resurrection, including the remarkable fact that resurrection raises the “flesh” (inasmuch as God has revealed Himself to those “in the flesh”). Barth’s early training inculcated in him dialectical themes that would emerge throughout his career. His early work is dominated by a sense of encounter with the present but transcendent God, an encounter described in terms of the raising of the dead. Human existence is sublated – “dissolved and established” – unto a higher order in God. Yet even after Barth abandons the resurrection of the dead as his preferred theological axiom, he portrays eschatology proper in terms of the human sublated in the divine presence. Therefore, in Church Dogmatics he expresses the doctrine of the resurrection of the flesh in three primary ways: eternalization, manifestation and incorporation. The human, delimited as he or she is by death, is made durable in God, obtaining the gift of eternalization. The human, ambiguous in the creaturely mode of earthly life, has one’s true identity revealed with Christ at His return, and obtains the gift of manifestation with the divine. The human, isolated as he or she is in one’s autonomy, is incorporated into the body of Christ by His Spirit, obtaining the gift of communion. In each of these expressions of resurrection Barth desires to preserve fleshliness. His account, however, entails a certain loss of temporality, creatureliness and particularity of the human when it comes to the final state. Instead of being resurrected from the dead in the strong corporeal sense, human bodies appear to be memorialized, deified, recapitulated. Though written with the language of the Antiochene and Reformed schools, Barth’s position enjoys the same strengths and suffers the same weaknesses of a more Alexandrian or Lutheran theological trajectory. Like each of the traditional lines of Christian thought about the resurrection of the flesh, Barth gravitates toward an eschatology centered around the human’s vision of God in the heavenly life. To this extent Barth’s creative treatment of the resurrection of the dead can be understood as broadly Christian, even if he risks undermining the very flesh he hopes to save.

▼ This thesis aims to examine Johnsonâs writings and argue his happiness is a state of eternity in the afterlife which results mainly from Godâs mercy and human beingsâ obedience, repentance and virtue (or good works). To prove my thesis, I need to study the foundation and essence of Johnsonâs salvation alongside his moral and religious thoughts. I thus argue, in Chapter One, that Johnsonâs early life has great influence upon him and his well-known spiritual anxiety serves as the main cause of his fear of death and as an important index in the study of Johnsonâs conditional salvation. Before probing into Johnsonâs salvation, I attempt in Chapter Two to expound religion in eighteenth-century England, especially Johnsonâs role as a religious man and a moralist. Both identities play crucial roles in analyzing Johnsonâs happiness. Johnsonâs morality is surely profoundly conditioned by the climate of social, religious and moral experience shared by his contemporaries in eighteenth-century England and can hardly be dissolved despite great care. His religious and moral thoughts are so large questions to approach, not to mention to answer them. Therefore, the treatment is necessarily selective. I will focus on the connection between Johnsonâs morality and his own Christian belief shown in his sermons and other genres of writings. Though Johnson is noticeably ambivalent towards his moral instruction at times, he never jumps the track of the core of his moral thinking: his happiness is of after-life. In Chapter Three and Chapter Four, I will do a close reading on Johnsonâs frequent discussion of happiness in his periodical essays and Oriental tale Rasselas and on that of salvation, virtue and eternity respectively with intent to argue that Johnsonâs happiness is largely supported by his belief in Christianâs ideas of salvation and eternity. Samuel Johnson in Rasselas voices the essence of happiness through Nekayah after a series of adventures and pursuit of happiness: âTo me, the choice of life is become less important; I hope hereafter to think only on the choice of eternityâ (Rasselas 418). This passage clearly marks that happiness of this life is unreliable and the quest will be not only aimless but endless. To assure everlasting happiness, one ought to aspire to the afterlife by strenuous efforts in this life for eternity. Furthermore, I will show evidence from Johnsonâs life and words to strengthen my presumption that eternity forwards the realization of happiness. The eternal state of afterlife pacifies Johnsonâs spiritual anxiety in this life and enhances the charm of the world coming after. This is quite at odds with Johnsonâs fear of death; however, it pinpoints how a devout Christian struggles for not merely salvation but rewards from God after death. ▼ This study provides a critical analysis of the meaning of eternity as it relates to the human being in Kierkegaard’s psychological work, The Concept of Anxiety. First, the eternal signifies the divine image implanted in human beings from the beginning of creation, making us spiritual, embodied beings with the capacity for self-consciousness, a God relationship, freedom, everlasting life, and communal fellowship with other persons. Second, the eternal is present both ontologically and normatively in human beings, providing an unchanging criterion and telos of human existence, a task we are responsible to fulfill. Third, eternity signifies perfection; it is the ideal for which we were created. By failing to fulfill this task, we can be said to “lose” the eternal through sin and “gain” it again through redemption. As sinners who are guilty of refusing to fulfill this task, Haufniensis argues that eternity’s criterion can only be fulfilled through faith in Christ’s atonement. This decision in time paradoxically has eternal consequences, and in this sense the eternal signifies transcendence beyond our spatiotemporal world. However, the believer’s eternal decision in time not only determines whether life after death entails eternal happiness instead of eternal damnation; it also has redemptive consequences that begin in temporality, bringing a spiritual continuity and sanctified vision of oneself, others, and the temporal world here and now. Chapter one gives an overview of the significance and conceptual aspects of eternity. Chapter two investigates the predominantly ontological presence of the eternal in the self, specifically in a human being’s original created structure (i.e., before the fall into sin). Chapter three explores the self’s falling away from the eternal, a fall that reveals eternity’s ontological and normative role, as well as what Kierkegaard calls the “demonic” relation to eternity. Chapter four offers a contrast between the Platonic and Christian ways of helping the self regain a proper relationship to eternity, both ontologically and normatively. Chapter five further develops and analyzes the normative implications of Christian repetition and explains how the qualities of inwardness, earnestness, and concretion characterize a proper conception and relationship to the eternal. La thèse consiste en une nouvelle traduction du livre VIII de la Physique d’Aristote, suivie d’un commentaire linéaire et problématisé du traité. Ce travail propose de repérer et d’analyser aussi bien les difficultés d’interprétation que les problèmes philosophiques internes au système aristotélicien en prenant appui sur les apports de la riche littérature secondaire et en se nourrissant de l’exégèse ancienne grecque et arabe. Il montre que le livre VIII est consacré de bout en bout à la question de l’éternité du mouvement et est susceptible de trois interprétations très différentes en fonction de la manière dont on identifie la nature de cette éternité. Après avoir présenté la première lecture, commune à la tradition néoplatonicienne (Philopon et Simplicius) et à la première réception arabe du traité (Fārābī, Ibn Bāǧǧa et le jeune Averroès), puis la seconde interprétation, propre à l’Averroès tardif, cette recherche met à distance ces deux interprétations historiques pour déployer une nouvelle lecture, « sous-déterminée », du traité, plus fidèle à sa lettre.

The dissertation consists of a new translation of the eighth book of Aristotle’s Physics followed by a linear and analytical commentary of the treatise. Based on a study of the contemporary secondary literature and a close examination of the Greek and Arabic exegesis, the aim of this work is to identify and analyse the difficulties of interpretation as well as the philosophical problems that arise inside the Aristotelian system. It demonstrates that Book VIII is all the way long a study of the eternity of motion and gives rise to three very different interpretations according to the way one understands the nature of this eternity. After a presentation of the first reading of the treatise, common to the Neoplatonist tradition (Philoponus and Simplicius) and the first Arabic reception of the text (Fārābī, Ibn Bāǧǧa and the young Averroes), and of the second reading, specific to the late works of Averroes, this research distances itself from both historical interpretations and develops a new reading of the treatise closer to the Aristotelian text.

La thèse étudie et met en lumière la thématique, centrale dans la philosophie de Marsile Ficin, de la temporalité. L’œuvre de Ficin est, en effet, traversée par ces figures du temps que sont la tradition, la révélation et l’espérance. Pensée cohérente et unitaire, la philosophie de Ficin ne forme pas pour autant un système mais est bien plutôt l’expression d’une dynamique, celle de la pensée renaissante. Dans cette étude, les formes de la temporalité et l’unicité du monde sont examinées à travers l’analyse du Commentaire de la République de Platon par Marsile Ficin qui ne met pas tant l’accent sur les thèmes politiques et éthiques propres au dialogue platonicien mais à la différence de celui-ci se veut explicitement métaphysique et théologique ne serait-ce que parce que les figures de la temporalité y sont conçues comme autant de points de vue métaphysiques à partir desquels sont envisagés le monde et les êtres qui le composent.Ce texte n’ayant pas bénéficié de traduction française moderne, la thèse comble de surcroît une lacune dans les études ficiniennes en proposant pour la première fois une traduction en français des Argumenta in Rempublicam Platonis. Cette version française s’appuie sur l’établissement critique du texte, s’assortit d’une notice, de notes complémentaires et de la possibilité de se référer aux différents témoignages sur lesquels ce travail se fonde. Enfin, la thèse met en évidence une définition proprement ficinienne de la temporalité comme réalité spirituelle et humaine en examinant la question de la genèse et de la généalogie des concepts temporels et en en montrant l’implication cosmologique.

The thesis studies and highlights the central theme of temporality in Marsilio Ficino’s philosophy which is a thought crossed by the figures of time that are tradition, revelation and hope. The philosophy of Ficino, which is both a coherent and united thought, is not a system but it is rather the expression of a dynamic, specific to the Renaissance thought. In this study, the forms of the temporality and the unicity of the world are examined through the critical analysis of Marsilio Ficino's Commentary on the Republic of Plato which, unlike the political and ethical themes specific to the platonic dialogue, is expressly metaphysical and theological because the figures of temporality are conceived as so many metaphysical points of view from which are contemplated the world and the beings composing it. As this text did not benefit from a modern French translation, the thesis fills a gap in ficinian studies by proposing for the first time a French translation of the Argumenta in Rempublicam Platonis is proposed for the first time and, this French version, which is based on the critical establishment of the text, includes a notice, additional notes and the possibility of referring to the various sources on which this work is based. ▼ While this analysis of the Old, Middle, and Early Modern English translations of De Consolatione Philosophiandamp;aelig; provides a brief reception history and an overview of the critical tradition surrounding each version, its focus is upon how these renderings present particular moments that offer the consolation of eternity, especially since such passages typify the work as a whole. For Boethius, confused and conflicting views on fame, fortune, happiness, good and evil, fate, free will, necessity, foreknowledge, and providence are only capable of clarity and resolution to the degree that one attains to knowledge of the divine mind and especially to knowledge like that of the divine mind, which alone possesses a perfectly eternal perspective. Thus, as it draws upon such fundamentally Boethian passages on the eternal Prime Mover, this study demonstrates how the translators have negotiated linguistic, literary, cultural, religious, and political expectations and forces as they have presented their own particular versions of the Boethian vision of eternity. Even though the text has been understood, accepted, and appropriated in such divergent ways over the centuries, the Boethian vision of eternity has held his Consolations arguments together and undergirded all of its most pivotal positions, without disturbing or compromising the philosophical, secular, academic, or religious approaches to the work, as readers from across the ideological, theological, doctrinal, and political spectra have appreciated and endorsed the nature and the implications of divine eternity. It is the consolation of eternity that has been cast so consistently and so faithfully into Old, Middle, and Early Modern English, regardless of form and irrespective of situation or background. For whether in prose and verse, all-prose, or all-verse, and whether by a Catholic, a Protestant, a king, a queen, an author, or a scholar, each translation has presented the texts central narrative: as Boethius the character is educated by the figure of Lady Philosophy, his eyes are turned away from the earth and into the heavens, moving him and his mind from confusion to clarity, from forgetfulness to remembrance, from reason to intelligence, and thus from time to eternity.
