This thesis proposes and analyzes numerical methods for solving the Vlasov equation. This equation models the evolution of a species of charged particles under the effet of an electromagnetic field. The first part is devoted to a mathematical analysis of semi-Lagrangian schemes solving the linear transport equation which is the basic building block of directional splitting methods.Solving methods for the Vlasov equation coupled to the Poisson equation, in the case where only the electric field is considered, are optimized in the second part. This optimization relates to the time of calculation by the use of Graphics Processing Unit (GPU) and the use of an inhomogeneous mesh.In the third and final part, we study a numerical method for calculating the gyroaverage operator involved in gyrokinetic theory. This method will be applied to solve the quasi-neutrality equation.

Many numerical methods have been developed in order to selve the Vlasov equation, because computing precise simulations in a reasonable time is a real challenge. This equation describes the time evolution of the distribution function of charged particles (electrons/ions), which depends on 3 variables in space, 3 in velocity and time. The main idea of this thesis is to rewrite the Vlasov equation in the form of a hyperbolic system using a semi-discretization of the velocity. This semi-discretization is achieved using the finite element method. The resulting model is called the reduced Vlasov equation. We propose different numerical methods to salve this new model efficiently: finite volume methods, semi-Lagrangian methods and discontinuous Galerkin methods.

▼ In this dissertation, using systematic coarse-graining, we develop multiscale models to study structural and dynamical properties of confined fluids. With the advent of nanofluidics and nanobiotechnology, fluids confined inside nanometer scale geometries have become a
subject of both fundamental investigation and applied research. An understanding of the structural and dynamical properties of fluids at nanoscale is essential for designing novel engineering applications such as nanofiltration, carbon-dioxide sequestration, single-file transport, nanomedicine and many others. Our structural model is based on an empirical potential based
quasi-continuum theory (EQT). EQT is a multiscale theory that seamlessly integrates the interatomic potentials describing various atomic interactions into a continuum framework to obtain the equilibrium density and potential profiles of confined fluids in a self-consistent manner. The density and potential profiles obtained from it are comparable in accuracy with those obtained from particle-based methods such as molecular dynamics (MD) simulations. Also, being a continuum approach, EQT is very simple to implement and is computationally several orders of magnitude faster than MD simulations. The central task in EQT is the development of
quasi-continuum potential models that accurately describe the wall-fluid and fluid-fluid interactions in confined fluids. Using systematic coarse-graining, we discuss the development of coarse-grained single-site (CGSS) pair-potentials and
quasi-continuum potential models for poly-atomic fluids. Proposed potential models systematically incorporate the effect of size, geometric shape and orientation of poly-atomic fluids to predict the correct microstructure in confined environments. We take carbon-dioxide as an example fluid and demonstrate the applicability of the potentials models in EQT as well as coarse-grained MD (CG-MD) simulations to predict the center-of-mass (COM) density and potential profiles of carbon-dioxide inside slit-shape graphite nanochannels at several high and low pressure confinements. The results obtained from EQT and CG-MD simulations are found in good agreement with those obtained from all-atom MD (AA-MD) simulations.
To develop dynamical models, one fundamental question is to understand the role of thermal noise in nanofluidic dynamics and transport. We discuss a combined memory function
equation (MFE) and generalized Langevin
equation (GLE) based approach (referred to as MFE/GLE formulation) to characterize thermal noise in molecular fluids. Using MFE/GLE formulation in conjunction with MD simulation, we extract and analyze the statistical properties of thermal noise in confined fluids. We find that the thermal noise correlation time of the confined fluid does not vary significantly across the confinement and is quite similar to that of the corresponding reference bulk state fluid. We show that it is the cross-correlation of the mean force with the molecular velocity that gives rise to the spatial anisotropy in the…

▼ This study presents an ascent-based perspective on the climatology of storm tracks across western North America for the October-April cool seasons spanning 1989-2008. Data from the ECMWF ERA-interim reanalysis are used. Synoptic scale ascent is shown to be a physically significant measure of storm location and intensity that can be accumulated over seasonal time scales to represent storm tracks. Subsynoptic scale vertical motions, such as orographic ascent, are filtered by using an alternative balance version of the omega equation. This constraint is an important consideration to estimate storm tracks in regions of complex topography. The climatological mean distribution of ascent suggests that the primary storm track occupies a sinusoidal belt across the eastern Pacific and adjacent portions of North America. The seasonal cycle in the location and intensity of storms is pronounced and consistent with synoptic experience. Interannual variations in synoptic-scale ascent are examined by principal component analysis. Meridional shifts from year-to-year of the locations of greatest ascent can be related to amplification and weakening of the climatological sinusoidal storm track. These interannual variations are found to be related to the phase of the El Niño Southern Oscillation, although the sample size of 19 seasons is a limitation for this analysis. The link between precipitation and synoptic-scale ascentis shown to be modulated by the extent to which the atmosphere is saturated.

In this thesis, we adress the study of weak infinite energy solutions for the critical dissipative quasi geostrophic (SQG) equation. We also study a 1D transport equation with non local velocity. More precisely, we consider the (SQG) equation equation with data in Morrey-Camapanto type spaces and the other equation in a weighted Lebesgue spaces. Both spaces generate infinite energy solutions. Regarding the 1D equation with non local…

▼ Irish Neutrality - What are the Costs and Benefits of Ireland’s Policy of Neutrality?
Irish Neutrality is a policy that has evolved since the foundation of the State. The exposure
to major conflicts since statehood was achieved by Ireland has been relatively limited.
Ireland’s policy of neutrality has been essentially a pragmatic policy and in Irish terms
successful as a neutral stance has assisted in affirming sovereignty for Ireland as an
independent nation. The Irish people have cherished neutrality as a concept. Neutrality has
become a symbol of Irish identity and has assisted in keeping Ireland out of war. With the
fall of the Berlin Wall, changing World Order, increased European integration, freer
movements of populations, new terrorists threats, proliferation of weapons of mass
destruction, the time has come for neutral states to question whether a neutral stance is the
most appropriate option to follow in the 21st century. My research explores Irish Neutrality,
investigating initially definitions and obligations associated with neutrality, and examining
the concept of Irish Neutrality from a historical perspective to assess its credibility and
compatibility with membership of international organizations. The study further attempts to
analyse the costs and benefits to Ireland of a neutral policy to ascertain if such a policy is
the most appropriate for Ireland to follow. My research is important as Ireland, a country
that values it contributions to UN membership, deploys its aimed forces on more robust UN
missions, becomes a more established member of the EU and participates more effectively
in PfP structures. While neutrality is referred to extensively by Irish politicians, it is not
enshrined in the Irish Constitution and although it is a flexible and pragmatic policy, it is
actually not a very tangible entity. To pursue a policy of neutrality implies the application
of impartiality towards all belligerents in a conflict. Ireland has joined PfP which some
Irish people see a stepping-stone to NATO membership. With increased participation in
PfP mechanisms and improved interoperability between the Defence Forces and NATO
members, there is a possibility that Irish Neutrality could be compromised. Relying on
extensive text analysis and interviews with key informants of Irish Neutrality, my final
analysis concludes that there has been limited debate on this subject and what is required is
enlightened debate in order to assess it appropriateness for Ireland as European integration
and expansion continues.

▼ In this article, we introduce solving Burgersâs equations using finite-difference methods and multiquadric
quasi-interpolation. By combining high-order finite-difference methods with multiquadric
quasi-interpolation, we obtain high-order radial basis function numerical method. First we introduce the knowledge about Burgers
equation, then we provide four different algorithms for solving Burgersâ s equations. And the numerical experiments justify the performance of these four methods. Finally, we conclude high-order radial basis function numerical method effectively improves the performance of multiquadric
quasi-interpolation on solving Burgersâ s equations.

▼ In this thesis we study the utility maximization problem for assets whose prices are cointegrated, which arises from the investment practice of convergence trading and its special forms, pairs trading and spread trading. The major theme in the first two chapters of the thesis, is to investigate the assumption of market-neutrality of the optimal convergence trading strategies, which is a ubiquitous assumption taken by practitioners and academics alike. This assumption lacks a theoretical justification and, to the best of our knowledge, the only relevant study is Liu and Timmermann (2013) which implies that the optimal convergence strategies are, in general, not market-neutral. We start by considering a minimalistic pairs-trading scenario with two cointegrated stocks and solve the Merton investment problem with power and logarithmic utilities. We pay special attention to when/if the stochastic control problem is well-posed, which is overlooked in the study done by Liu and Timmermann (2013). In particular, we show that the problem is ill-posed if and only if the agent’s risk-aversion is less than a constant which is an explicit function of the market parameters. This condition, in turn, yields the necessary and sufficient condition for well-posedness of the Merton problem for all possible values of agent’s risk-aversion. The resulting well-posedness condition is surprisingly strict and, in particular, is equivalent to assuming the optimal investment strategy in the stocks to be market-neutral. Furthermore, it is shown that the well-posedness condition is equivalent to applying Novikov’s condition to the market-price of risk, which is a ubiquitous sufficient condition for imposing absence of arbitrage. To the best of our knowledge, these are the only theoretical results for supporting the assumption of market-neutrality of convergence trading strategies. We then generalise the results to the more realistic setting of multiple cointegrated assets, assuming risk factors that effects the asset returns, and general utility functions for investor’s preference. In the process of generalising the bivariate results, we also obtained some well-posedness conditions for matrix Riccati differential equations which are, to the best of our knowledge, new. In the last chapter, we set up and justify a Merton problem that is related to spread-trading with two futures assets and assuming proportional transaction costs. The model possesses three characteristics whose combination makes it different from the existing literature on proportional transaction costs: 1) finite time horizon, 2) Multiple risky assets 3) stochastic opportunity set. We introduce the HJB equation and provide rigorous arguments showing that the corresponding value function is the viscosity solution of the HJB equation. We end the chapter by devising a numerical scheme, based on the penalty method of Forsyth and Vetzal (2002), to approximate the viscosity solution of the HJB equation.

▼ My research investigates the use and regulation of private military companies (PMCs) in international law. This legal research adopts a critical method of historical sociology to accommodate changing modes of governance. By exploring historical patterns of the use of private force I analyse the effectiveness and applicability of contemporary attempts to regulate PMCs. There are numerous overlapping forms of regulation that attempt to govern PMC conduct. The key gap, identified by analysing relevant bodies of international and domestic law, is the lack of a corporate liability mechanism strong enough to tackle grave international crimes committed by PMCs and the challenges posed by the corporate veil. By assessing the prevailing form of governance and the role that private security plays in state policy, it becomes clear that states are the main PMC clients who rely on companies for providing security services. Meanwhile the industry treats military activity just like any other commodity that can be self-regulated by the free market. In order to close the gap of PMC impunity, an international legal response is required that can target PMCs as companies and to invoke criminal corporate responsibility. This is why I develop a corporate criminal responsibility approach that has the potential of addressing the legal gap in PMC regulation. I argue that due to the military nature of their activity, PMCs are different to other companies as they took on a portion of state functions that requires a proportionate legal response in terms of responsibility. Transnational nature of PMC activity signals the need for these companies to be recognised as actors on the international level and acquire international legal personality. Finally, I explore the possibility of invoking criminal corporate responsibility through international criminal law as it offers the most tailored approach of regulating a changing governance.

▼ As a theory-guided approach, SEM can estimate directional pathways in complex models using longitudinal or cross-sectional data where randomized control trials would either be unethical or cost prohibitive, thereby providing researchers with an alternative approach for delineating causal relationships. As SEM is a technique requiring large sample size, federal and state level surveys are often used, which are designed with complex sampling strategies. As many of the variables and in turn, weighted-ness, may be
subject to non-normality, it is important to adjust the SEM model fit statistics to more closely match the reference distribution (Satorra-Bentler, 1994). Further, missing data is a regular issue in nearly all surveys, especially those with large-scale, complex designs. The purpose of the study is to provide a comparison of estimations, modification indices, and goodness-of-fit tests for SEM between standard maximum likelihood estimation and
quasi-maximum likelihood using Satorra-Bentler correction using a complex survey data and multiple imputation. Using non-simulated data with missingness can provide guidance on how to incorporate both SEM and multiple imputation in future research. This study found that coefficients were the same regardless of estimator; however, standard errors increased under QML. Model fit statistics were better under QML, and Lagrange multiplier values from the modification indices were on average lower under QML, however, only with structural model components.

The thesis mainly consists of two parts. In the first part, we study the quasi-invariant flow generated by the Stratonovich stochas-tic differential equation with BV drift coefficients in the Euclidean space. We generalizethe results of Ambrosio [Invent. Math. 158 (2004), 227{260] on the existence, uniquenessand stability of regular Lagrangian flows of ordinary differential equations to Stratonovichstochastic differential equations with BV drift coefficients. As an application of the sta-bility result, we construct an explicit solution to the corresponding stochastic transportequation in terms of the stochastic flow. The approximate differentiability of the flow isalso studied when the drift coefficient has some Sobolev regularity. In the second part, we generalize the DiPerna-Lions theory in the Euclidean space to thecomplete Riemannian manifold. We define the commutator on the complete Riemannianmanifold which is a probabilistic version of the one in the DiPerna-Lions theory, andestablish the commutator estimate by the probabilistic method. As a direct applicationof the commutator estimate, we investigate the uniqueness of solutions to the transportequation by the method of the renormalized solution. Following Ambrosio's method, weconstruct the DiPerna-Lions flow on the Riemannian manifold. In order to construct thediffusion process associated to an…

This thesis presents a defence of quasi-realism regarding norms of belief. The main metaethic theories are explored in relation to metaethical relativism (i.e. are normative jugements on beliefs to be considered true in a relative sense or not ?). The different arguments in favour of metaethical relativism and non-relativist theories regarding norms of belief are scrutinized before considering several forms of realisms asserting the truth of certain normative judgements on belief norms because of the existence of susbtantial normative facts. After pointing out the limits of these theories, several expressivist answers to relativism will be developed and come to a quasi-realist answer which lead to two statements : first, normative judgements are endowed with truth-aptness in order to regulate our attitudes in individual thinking and collective discussion - secondly, the truth we attribute to normative judgements is an absolute truth.

▼ The behavior of carbon at terapascal pressures
(10’s of millions of atmospheres) is
important to modeling ice
giant planets and white dwarf stars and to designing inertial
confinement
fusion (ICF) experiments, where diamond is used to
contain and compress the
hydrogen fuel. The high-pressure shock
and release responses of diamond are of particular
interest to the
initial stages of an ICF implosion. Measurements of these behaviors
provide
rigorous constraints on important paths through carbon’s
equation of state. This work
presents experimental Hugoniot and
release data for both single-crystal diamond (SCD) and
nanocrystalline diamond (NCD), which is comprised of
nanometer-scale diamond grains
and is 5% less dense than SCD. We
find that the NCD used in ICF experiments has a
stiffer Hugoniot
than SCD that can be attributed to porosity. A Gr¨uneisen parameter
of 1
for high-pressure fluid carbon was derived from the NCD and
SCD Hugoniots and is used
in Mie-Gr¨uneisen models to accurately
describe the NCD and SCD release data.

▼ A multiparametric and fundamental
equation of state is presented for the fluid thermodynamic properties of helium. The
equation is valid for temperatures from the λ- line (~2.17 K) to 1500 K and for pressures up to 2000 MPa. The formulation can calculate all thermodynamic properties, including density, heat capacity, speed of sound, energies, entropy and saturation properties. A new
equation of state is necessary to overcome difficulties associated with the current standard in the asymptotic region between the λ -line and 3 K and also difficulties related to lack of data, extrapolation performance, and accuracy at higher temperatures.
Below 50 K, the uncertainties in density are 0.20% at pressures up to 20 MPa. From 50 K to 200 K the uncertainties decrease to 0.05 % at pressures up to 80 MPa. At higher temperatures the uncertainties in density are 0.02 % up to pressures of 80 MPa. At all temperatures and at pressures higher than listed here, the uncertainties may increase to 0.3% in density. The uncertainties in the speed of sound are 0.02%. The uncertainties in vapor pressure are less than 0.02% and for the heat capacities are about 2%. Uncertainties in the critical region are higher for all properties except vapor pressure.

▼ Breeding strawberry (Fragaria x ananassa) with enhanced fruit flavour and day-neutrality is one of the top priorities of the Australian Strawberry Breeding Program. Although several genes involved in the biosynthetic pathways of key volatile compounds and molecular control of flowering response in strawberry have been identified, the development and application of molecular markers associated with these traits remain limited. This study aims to identify molecular markers closely linked to genes controlling strawberry flavour and day-neutrality by combining the Subtracted Diversity Array (SDA) and the Bulked Segregant Analysis (BSA) approaches. To develop a platform for molecular marker identification, a SDA was constructed using a broad subtraction approach between five strawberry genotypes and nine non-angiosperm species, resulting in 287 features specific to the strawberry genome. Hierarchical clustering demonstrated that the strawberry-specific SDA was able to correctly cluster 15 strawberry genotypes based on known pedigree information. The aroma profiles and the SDA data of five selected genotypes produced highly similar hierarchical dendrograms. Three of the branch point markers, FLP1C6, FLP1E7 and FLP2E1 showed good correlation with ethyl hexanoate, methyl esters and linalool, respectively. These results indicate that the strawberry-specific SDA may be capable of detecting markers associated with aroma compound production. Subsequently, 50 F1 progeny derived from 07-102-41 x Juliette cross were selected for BSA based on the extreme levels of key volatile compounds assessed to identify molecular markers associated with fruit flavour. For the discovery of molecular markers associated with day-neutrality, the F1 progeny derived from a day-neutral (DN) x short day (SD) and two DN x DN crosses were selected for BSA according to the extremes of flowering response. Differential hybridisation patterns between the extreme DNA bulks were analysed using Discriminant Function Analysis (DFA), Fisher’s ratio and Independent Samples t-Test. Data analysis successfully identified a set of the most predictive features that best discriminated between the extreme DNA bulks. DNA sequence analyses showed that FLP1D7, FLP1A7 and FLP3E12 features were linked to genes possibly involved in the biosynthesis of methyl butanoate, γ-dodecalactone and linalool, respectively. Moreover, a putative C/T SNP was observed for FLP1D7 feature, suggesting the presence of allelic variants in this locus. Interestingly, FLP2E11 was found to be closely linked to a CYTOKININ OXIDASE (CKX1) gene possibly involved in promoting flowering under non-inductive condition. A 12 bp deletion was observed in the FLP2E11 sequence cloned from the SD but not the DN genotypes. These results indicate that allelic variants are present in this locus. It is hypothesised that these FLP2E11 allelic variants are linked to the wild type and the low activity CKX1 alleles. A hypothetical model is proposed to demonstrate the mechanism of flowering control…

The hypothesis of neutrality of money is the theoretical framework of the Quantity Theory of Money (QTM), which is based from the Fishers equation of exchange, assuming that the income-velocity of money is constant, the real output is exogenously determined by nonmonetary variables, such as technology, capital stock and labor supply. But the real output is truly exogenous in Brazil? Or, in other words, it is valid the hypothesis of neutrality of money? This theme has been the subject of many studies. In addition, the Tobin effect and the endogenous growth theories suggest that there may be a real effect of money in the long run. This study investigated the possible long-run relationships between the nominal money supply, the price level and real Gross Domestic Product (GDP) for Brazil from 1946 to 2008, using low frequency (annual) data . For the empirical test was used the Johansen cointegration and integration of the variables, especially the study of the stationarity of the velocity of money circulation, which provided to be constant only in the presence of structural breaks. Mainly, we used exogeneity tests in order to allow the researcher to work with a set of information as broad as possible, ie, encompassing the…

The aim of this thesis is to get as close as possible to a logic of discovery for the social sciences. Those disciplines do not have a neutral and objective narrative, but try to achieve,
rhetorically, neutrality and objectivity effects, avoiding to portrait agents as heroes, villains or victims. It follows from the need to validate scientific narratives in face of an ideally or potentially universal auditory, withholding, in principle, all kinds of values. Such plurality of world visions makes it difficult to naively treat agents as heroes, villains, or victims. As a consequence, the social scientist simulates a Gods Eye view, placing himself in a Supreme Ironist perspective, who sees everything from above, whose vision reaches beyond what nonperceptive agents can see. To make my point, I took as case study the Brazilian controversy over populism. Based on it, four main topics of development were identified: one refered to the prototypical theoretic structures, other to its imaginary structuration, another to its intersubjective structure, and a last one to the relationship of empirical research to grand theory.

▼ Using a Foucault-inspired critical analysis of discourse within a Gramscian framework of
hegemony, this thesis analyzes how patterns of international climate change policy relate
to climate policy in British Columbia (BC), Canada, and explores the patterns of
resistance to carbon
neutrality in a single municipality. The BC Carbon Neutral
Government Strategy and the Provincial Crown Corporation responsible for stimulating
the growth of the BC carbon-offset market are characterized by neo-liberalism ideology
and dispossession. The District of Saanich’s policy, which establishes a local and public
form of carbon offset alternative, is characterized as a form of resistance. Saanich’s
policy represents a passive revolution. This thesis suggests that the discourse of
ecological modernization exists within both the hegemonic climate policy structure as
well as the alternative found in Saanich. This thesis also suggests that municipalities
represent a political space in which a Gramscian war of position may be waged.

▼ This thesis addresses the following issues. First, what do actual mediators think about
neutrality and how do their opinions influence their behaviour in mediations? Second, should uniformity be encouraged and is regulation the best means to achieving this?
This thesis will explore mediator
neutrality in depth and touch on uniformity and regulation. There are three parts to this thesis. The first part is a review of the literature with respect to the meaning of mediator
neutrality, and the justifications for requiring it. The second part focuses on a questionnaire that was emailed to hundreds of mediators practicing in New Zealand. The methodology is discussed and the results explained. The questionnaire comprised questions that elicited both quantitative and qualitative data on mediator
neutrality. The third part of this thesis analyses the results in light of the research questions.

Personen Spielen untereinander interagiert.
detailliert diskutiert. Zusätzlich werden durchschnittliche Absorptionszeiten
(average fixation time) sowie die FixierungsWahrscheinlichkeit (fixation probability)
angegeben.
This thesis studies the behaviour of a fixed size population that engages in two by
two games. We use the Moran model and introduce fitness based on average payoff
to weight the imitation happening at each step. This leaves us with a birth-death
chain or imitation chain which we can compare to the deterministic replicator dynamic.
Such population models have applications in many fields, for example biology or
economics and have been studied extensively. Most studies of the long term behaviour
and its stability over time for the Moran model, included mutation because
this gives a unique stationary distribution with full support. In this thesis we exclude
mutation and work with the non-irreducible chain, which needs a different
approach. We mostly used numeric approximations when there were no explicit
formulas…

▼ This study investigates how the different ideological interpretations of the principle of
neutrality affect the practices of humanitarian aid organizations in conflict situations. Specifically, I study the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) and Médicins Sans Frontières (Doctors without Borders/MSF). Additionally, I seek specific examples from the current conflict in Darfur, Sudan to illustrate my findings.
The purpose of this study is to determine how the organizations deal with delivering aid in a highly politicized environment while maintaining
neutrality. It seeks to articulate the current dilemmas facing aid organizations that work to save the lives of those who suffer. Understanding the manner in which
neutrality impacts practice is an essential step in the process of determining the most effective and humanitarian means of delivering aid.
I interview staff members at the ICRC and MSF and collect operational reports from each organization. I conduct a qualitative analysis of the interviews and documents by coding the information according to six categories: 1)
Neutrality, 2) Coordination and Collaboration, 3) Political Factors, 4) Unintended Consequences of Aid, 5) Genocide, and 6) Human Rights. After the information is separated in these themes, I search for emergent themes in the data and articulate the policy dilemmas that arise.
I find that organizations identify
neutrality as simply not taking sides in a conflict. The manner in which
neutrality impacts practices depends on the goals and mission of the organization. This study demonstrates that humanitarian aid organizations consistently struggle with the question of how
neutrality should impact practice. ICRC adheres more strictly to the principle of
neutrality because of its international mandate to promote international humanitarian law and its dependency on access to victims to fulfill this mandate. There are two main schools of thought regarding
neutrality within MSF. There are those who assert that MSF should maintain
neutrality to the same extent as ICRC; and there are those who argue that MSF should take the role of public advocate for victims by denouncing abusive practices.
I conclude that
neutrality impacts practice, depending in part on the organization's goals, by enhancing the level of organizational responsibility for aid's impact, minimizing its coordination with other aid agencies, states or international organizations, and either eliminating the freedom to denounce abusive practices or causing dilemmas within organizations over whether or not to publicly denounce the parties to a conflict.
Neutrality is more often a pragmatic means to an end rather than a theoretical ideal. Additionally, the
neutrality of an organization depends not only on its intention but also on how it is perceived by the parties to the conflict.

▼ Systems whose components interact by unscreened long-range forces for example, stellar systems and non-neutral plasmas have characteristics that are anomalous with respect to systems with shielded or short-range forces. Besides presenting unique thermodynamic properties such as negative speci c heat and inequivalence of ensembles, their dynamics is predominantly collisionless and leads to out-of-equilibrium quasi-stationary states. These states are notoriously di cult to predict given an arbitrary initial condition, and there is still no uni ed theory to treat them. Thermodynamic equilibrium is reached only after long timescales that increase with the system size and often exceed the lifetime of the universe. Relaxation to equilibrium, therefore, has two timescales: one short, leading to outof- equilibrium quasi-stationary states, and a second, longer, which leads to thermodynamic equilibrium. In this thesis, we examine these phenomena by applying theoretical models and numerical simulation for di erent long-range interacting systems, including a model of classical XY-type spins with long-range interactions, and the self-gravitating system in three dimensions. In a second stage we study the collisional relaxation to thermodynamic equilibrium through kinetic equations and numerical simulation. We thus seek to clarify the mechanisms behind the quasi-stationary states and collisional relaxation.
