▼ This thesis is focused on the Navier{Stokes system for incompressible
uids with either
Dirichlet or nonlinear Navier{slip boundary conditions. For these systems, we exploit some
ideas in the context of the control theory and inverse source problems. The thesis is divided
in three parts.
In the rst part, we deal with the local null controllability for the Navier{Stokes system
with nonlinear Navier{slip conditions, where the internal controls have one vanishing component.
The novelty of the boundary conditions and the new estimates with respect to the
pressure term, has allowed us to extend previous results on controllability for the Navier{
Stokes system. The main ingredients to build our result are the following: a new regularity
result for the linearized system around the origin, and a suitable Carleman inequality for the
adjoint system associated to the linearized system. Finally, xed point arguments are used
in order to conclude the proof.
In the second part, we deal with an inverse source problem for the N- dimensional Stokes
system from local and missing velocity measurements. More precisely, our main result establishes
a reconstruction formula for the source F(x; t) = (t)f(x) from local observations of
N 1 components of the velocity. We consider that f(x) is an unknown vectorial function,
meanwhile (t) is known. As a consequence, the uniqueness is achieved for f(x) in a suitable
Sobolev space. The main tools are the following: connection between null controllability and
inverse problems throughout a result on null controllability for the N- dimensional Stokes
system with N 1 scalar controls, spectral analysis of the Stokes operator and Volterra integral
equations. We also implement this result and present several numerical experiments
that show the feasibility of the proposed recovering formula.
Finally, the last chapter of the thesis presents a partial result of stability for the Stokes
system when we consider a source F(x; t) = R(x; t)g(x), where R(x; t) is a known vectorial
function and g(x) is unknown. This result involves the Bukhgeim-Klibanov method for
solving inverse problems and some topics in degenerate Sobolev spaces.

An auxiliary problem crucial to the analysis of the compressible Stokes problem is studied by means of the technique of double layer in Lipschitz regions through a method first used by Verchota and subsequently extended to the parabolic case by Brown and Shen. In this way through the use and calculation of the boundary jump condition it is possible to establish the existence and unicity of the solution in appropriate function spaces via the study of boundary layer potentials.

▼ Pas de résumé
In order to give a general statistical description of turbulence, one tries to identify universal statistical features, common to a wider class of turbulent flows. In 1988, Kraichnan and Panda discovered one such possibly universal feature, namely, the fact that Navier-Stokes turbulence tends to reduce the strength of the nonlinearity in its governing equations. In the flrst part of the manuscript we consider the strength of the nonlinear term and, more precisely, of its fluctuations in isotropic turbulence. In order to measure this strength, we compare to the case of a flow fleld with the same energy distribution where the modes are statistically independent, as is the case in Gaussian noise. It is shown that the turbulent flow self-organizes towards a state in which the nonlinearity is reduced, and it is discussed what the implications of this reduction are. Also, in two dimensions it is illustrated how this self-organization manifests itself through the appearance of well-deflned vortical flow structures. In the second part of the manuscript, we investigate the dynamics of the Hasegawa- Wakatani model, a model relevant in the study of magnetically conflned fusion plasmas. The two-dimensional version of this model is considered, which includes some key features of the turbulent dynamics of a tokamak-edge. We consider the limit of the model in which the nonlinearity is reduced with respect to the linear forces. For this weakly nonlinear, wave dominated regime, analytical predictions suggest the presence of a feedback loop in which energy is transferred to highly anisotropic zonal flows by nonlocal interactions. We confirm these predictions and we demonstrate a strong suppression of the turbulent radial particle flux. In wall bounded geometry, the same mechanism is observed and here also the flux is eflciently reduced by the turbulence-zonal flow interaction.

This thesis is devoted to the experimental search for prints of the singularities that might occur in the solutions of the 3D incompressible Euler or Navier-Stokes equations. Indeed, the existence of solutions to these partial differential equations has been proven but it is still unknown whether these solutions are regular, i.e. whether they blow up in finite time or not. In this thesis, we postulate the existence of such singularities and look for prints of them in 3D velocity fields acquired experimentally in a turbulent swirling flow. The distribution, 3D structure and time evolution of these prints are detailed. Our detection of prints of possible singularities is based on the work of the mathematicists Duchon and Robert. We look for extreme values of the Duchon-Robert term at small scales, i.e. in the dissipative range. That is what we call prints of singularities. We compute the Duchon-Robert term on velocity fields which are acquired experimentally at the center of a von Kármán turbulent swirling flow. The velocity field is measured by tomographic particle image velocimetry (TPIV), either time-resolved or…

In this work, we consider Schr?dinger's nonlinear equation, minus delta plus the potential of x times u equal to the function f of u.With u in space H one of Rn minus 0, where N is greater than or equal to 3, the potential is a non-periodic function that changes signs and f is an asymptotically linear function at infinity. In addition, the potential has a positive limit at infinity and the spectrum of the Schr?dinger operator has a negative end. The existence of a weak solution is established using the spectral theory, the Linking theorem under the condition of Cerami and the iteration between translated solutions of the problem in the associated infinity.

▼ The development of an explicit unstructured grid finite-volume scheme for solving the
full incompressible
Navier-
Stokes equations along with the energy equation in a strongly
coupled manner is presented. The Boussinesq approximation is utilized to account for
thermal buoyancy. The method of artificial compressibilty is used to solve the resulting
equations in a time marching fashion. Roe's approximate Riemann solver is used for the
construction of the numerical flux. An eigensystem is derived for the flux Jacobian matrix,
which is used in the evaluation of the numerical flux and the characteristic variable boundary
conditions. The resulting algorithm is validated by simulating canonical test cases from the
three regimes of convective heat transfer. The computed solutions are in close agreement
with analytical solutions and other benchmark computations.

▼ In this research a stabilized finite element approach is utilized in the development of a high-order flow solver for compressible turbulent flows. The Reynolds averaged
Navier-
Stokes (RANS) equations and modified Spalart-Almaras (SA) turbulence model are discretized using the streamline/upwind Petrov-Galerkin (SUPG) scheme. A fully implicit methodology is used to obtain steady state solutions or to drive unsteady problems at each time step. Order of accuracy is assessed for inviscid and viscous flows in two and three dimensions via the method of manufactured solutions. Proper treatment of curved surface geometries is of vital importance in high-order methods, especially when high aspect ratio elements are used in viscous flow regions. In two dimensions, analytic surface representations are used to ensure proper surface point placement, and an algebraic mesh smoothing procedure is applied to prevent invalid elements in high aspect ratio meshes. In dealing with complex three-dimensional geometries, high-order curved surfaces are generated via a Computational Analysis PRogramming Interface (CAPRI), while the interior meshes are deformed through a linear elasticity solver. In addition, the effects of curved elements on solution accuracy are evaluated. Finally, several test cases in two and three dimensions are presented and compared with benchmark results and/or experimental data.

▼ In this paper we consider the Cauchy problem for the 3D \\NS equations for incompressible flows, and their solutions. We will discuss the results of a paper by Otto Kreiss and Jens Lorenz on the role of the pressure term in the \\NS equations, and its relationship to the fluid field u(x,t). The focus here is to concentrate on solutions to the equation where the fluid field u lies in the space \\Ci(\\R
3)\\cap\\Li(\\R
3), and not necessarily in L
2(\\R
3). If u(x,0)=f(x), where f\∈\\Ci(\\R
3)\\cap\\Li(\\R
3) we will consider the solutions for all t in time interval 0\ ≤ t < T(f). In the original paper, estimates for the \\emph{derivatives} of the pressure were proved, but the definition of the pressure proved unsatisfactory due to the possibility of the divergence of the pressure term. The main object of this paper is to use the theory of singular integrals and the space of functions of \\BMO to properly address the pressure. In doing so, we will provide estimates on pressure term itself. This will allow us to strengthen the results of the original paper, and rigorously extend all results from the original paper to \\emph{any} function u\∈\\Ci(\\R
3)\\cap\\Li(\\R
3).

The notion of gradient schemes, designed for linear and nonlinear elliptic and parabolic problems has the benefit of providing common convergence and error estimates results, which hold for a wide variety of numerical methods (finite element methods, nonconforming and mixed finite element methods, hybrid and mixed mimetic finite difference methods ...). Checking a minimal set of properties for a given numerical method suffices to prove that it belongs to the gradient schemes framework, and therefore that it is convergent on the different problems studied here. The study of the Stefan problem, the incompressible Stokes one and also the incompressible Navier-Stokes equations are presented in this thesis, where each one gets a convergence theorem set up with the gradient schemes framework. For Stokes and Navier-Stokes, we both provide the proof for the steady and the transient case dealing with some variational hypotheses which bring different convergence results. Finally, we also present four methods (Taylor-Hood, Crouzeix-Raviart, Marker-and-Cell, Hybrid Mixed Mimetic) for these two problems and we check that they enter in the gradient schemes framework

This applied mathematics thesis is dedicated to the modelling and exploration of numerical geometry optimization techniques. The first chapter is dedicated to a geometry optimization algorithm implemented in optiflow, in the case where the boundary to optimize is associated to no-slip conditions. The implementation is online and comes with a manual. It is therefore possible to use it for real-life applications such as pipeline or air conditioning, etc. In the second chapter, I describe a way to model fluid flow through an aquaporine. After making the fluid model precise, the existence of an optimal shape for the dissipated energy criterion is proven. Partial boundary conditions make appear difficulties in the sensitivity analysis of the optimization problem. A specific numerical treatment is presented to overcome this difficulty. Finally, several numerical examples are presented and commented.

▼ The velocity-area method is a standard procedure for measurement of river discharge, with wide application in hydrometric studies, standardized at the international level by the norm ISO 748:2007 of the International Standards Organization. This method requires measurement of velocity at several verticals of the river, at different depths for each vertical. In general, a relatively high number of measurements is necessary do determine the discharge. Recently a technique was proposed which results in a robust estimate of river discharge using a reduced number of measurement points, based on elementary properties of fluid dynamics, stemming from the Navier-Stokes equations, and the use of continuous interpolation between the verticals for calculating velocity across the entire river cross section. In the present work the Monte Carlo Markov Chain (MCMC) method is used to search for the optimum positions for velocity measurement, with the objective of reducing the number of measurement points without significant loss of precision, and therefore maximizing the efficiency of the estimate. A dedicated computer algorithm was developed in C programming language and applied to measurements collected on the river Exu, state of Pernambuco, Brazil, in April 2008. It is found that the discharge estimates with three or more measurement points exhibit variations well within uncertainty limits corresponding to the full 27 point estimate using the traditional velocity-area method. Simulation results indicate that the best positions for velocity measurement are close to the surface, and that significant savings in cost and labor may be accomplished by positioning the measurements at strategic points, without precision loss.

▼ Abstract: It is a classical open problem to determine if the vanishing viscosity limit can be established in the presence of boundaries. Based on this important issue, Kelliher, Lopes Filho and Nussenzveig Lopes studied in [21] the behavior of viscous incompresible flow in an expanding bounded domain when the viscosity is very small. To be more precise, these three authors described conditions under which the limiting flow satisfies the full space Euler equations. The present work is natural continuation of the aforementioned research since we consider 3D incompressible viscous flows around a distant obstacle along with the vanishing viscosity limit. Specificly, we obtain such a polynomial decay which shows an asymptotic behavior of families of 3D incompressible viscous flows, in the exterior of a single smooth obstacle, in terms of both the obstacle position and the small viscosity. Our approach allows us to compare our rate of convergence to that ones proved in [21]

The present work shows Cauchy s Theorem on its classical form, and it has the objective of weakening their statements, and provides aplications in continuum mechanics. The metodology used here is the axiomatic, that is, a presentation of basic concepts with fundamental results and theirs proofs. The main result here is Theorem 5, since it shows that for a Cauchy ux weakly balanced with density f there is a eld such that f is linear in almost every points of R. The conclusion obtained is we can substitute the statement that f is a continuum function of position and have similar conclusions.

In this thesis we discuss three models describing the dynamics of density-dependent fluids in long lifes pans and on a planetary scale. In such setting the relative displacement induced by various external physical forces, such as the Coriolis force and the stratification buoyancy, is far more relevant than the intrinsic motion generated by the collision of particles of the fluid itself. Such disproportion of balance limits hence the motion, inducing persistent structures in the velocity flow.On a mathematical level one of the main difficulties relies in giving a full description of the perturbations induced by the external forces, which propagate at high speed. This analysis can be performed by the aid of several tools, we chose here to adopt techniques characteristic of harmonic analysis, such as the analysis of the dispersive properties of highly oscillating integrals. All along the thesis we consider boundary-free, three-dimensional domains, and inspecific we study only the case in which the domain in either the whole space or the periodic space . The models we consider are the following ones : primitive equations with comparable Froude and Rossby number and zero vertical diffusivity, density-dependent stratified fluids in low Froude number regime, weakly compressible and fast rotating fluid in a regime in which Mach and…

In this thesis we study the exponential stabilization of the two and three-dimensional Navier- Stokes equations in a bounded domain Ω, by means of a boundary control. The Control is expressed in terms of the velocity field by using a non-linear feedback law. In order to determine a feedback law, we consider an extended system coupling the Navier-Stokes equations with an equation satisfied by the control on the domain boundary. While most traditional approaches apply a feedback controller via an algebraic Riccati equation, the Stokes-Oseen operator or extension operators, a Galerkin method is proposed instead in this study. The Galerkin method permits to construct a stabilizing boundary control and by using energy a priori estimation technics, the exponential decay is obtained. A compactness result then allows us to pass to the limit in the nonlinear system satisfied by the approximated solutions. Chapter 1 deals with the stabilization problem of the Navier-Stokes equations around a given steady state, while Chapter 2 examines the stabilization problem around a prescribed non-stationary state. Chapter 3 is devoted to the stabilization of the Navier-Stokes problem with mixed-boundary conditions (Dirichlet-Neumann), around to a given steady-state. Finally, we present in Chapter 4, numerical results in the case of a flow around a circular obstacle

We consider the Stokes’ problem in regions with cylindrical outlets to infinity connected by an arbitrary bounded domain. We impose an additional condition about the pressure behavior as |x| → +∞, in addition to the usual initial and boundary conditions over the velocity field. We present a problem proposed by D. Koch concerning such regions and conditions, and we formulate it in terms of more general ones. The techniques used in the well-known Leray’s problem allow the demonstration of the existence of solutions to the variational problem.

In this work we developed an algorithm to generate meshes quadtree in order to use them to simulate uid ow, which often makes it necessary to use ne meshes. The central idea of the generation of quadtree meshes is based on the quaternary structure of the tree, where each node has four children, and thus a tree structure is associated with a mesh that can be evenly or locally re ned. To avoid problems of discretization, a quadtree mesh must satisfy a criterion called the balancing and this is addressed in detail in the development of this work. We also highlight another important point in the implementation of quadtree meshes, which is the search for neighboring nodes. Additionally, we present the nite di erences discretization of operators, which uses the knowledge of the mesh quadrant neighboors and interpolation techniques. The order of the method is checked by tests with the heat equation for both uniform meshes and for meshes with di erent levels of re nement and we conclude that method here presented is satisfactory.

This thesis, entitled NSIBM: a parallel Navier-Stokes solver with automatic mesh refinement based on immersed boundary method, has been conducted within the iCube laboratory dedicated to mechanics and located in Strasbourg. It has been supervised by Professor Yannick Hoarau. This work mainly deals with coding a program able to solve the Navier-Stokes equations that governs moving fluids, in a numerical way. Particular attention was paid to the production of meshes that suit given geometries and their generation. The means used here to handle the eternal problem of the fineness of the mesh opposed to too many cells are several~:refinement, parallelization and the immersed boundary method.Initially, I designed a two and three-dimensional mesh generator that includes the possibility of dividing cells,in an automatic way, by geometrical, numerical or physical criteria. It also allows to remove cells, where there is no point keeping it.…

The objective of the present work is to study the parallelization of partial differential equations. The aim is to achieve an effective parallelization to generate numerical solution of Navier-Stokes equations in a two-dimensional incompressible and isothermal flow of a Newtonian fluid. The spatial derivatives are calculated using compact finite differences approximations of higher order accuracy. Since the calculation of spatial derivatives with high order adopted in the present work requires the solution of tridiagonal systems, it is important to conduct studies to solve these systems and achieve good performance. In addiction, linear systems solution is also present in the numerical solution of a Poisson equation. The results generated by the solution of partial differential equations are compared to analytical solution, in order to verify the accuracy of the implemented methods. The numerical parallel solution of a Navier-Stokes equations is compared with linear stability theory to validate the final code. The performance and the speedup of the code in question is also checked, comparing the execution time in function of the number of processing elements

INFINITOṕara a vorticidade.
Motivated by important physical phenomenons, we study the twodimensional Navier- Stokes equations, in bounded domains, with Navier friction type boundary condition (the tangential velocity is proportional to the tangential component of the viscous stress) and the non-penetration boundary condition (zero normal velocity). We prove existence, uniqueness and regularity of the solution to the equations and we deduce a uniform \'L POT. INFINIT\'-bound for the vorticity. Also, we analyze the inviscid limit, that is, for each viscosity coefficient \'\μ\', we consider the solution \'u POT.\μóf the problem and we prove that the function \'u = \\lim_{\μ SETA 0\́'u POT.\μśatisfies the incompressible Euler equations. Finally, weaken the regularity of the initial data and of the external force, we prove existence and uniqueness of a solution to the problem. In the same way, we prove that the inviscid limit satisfies the incompressible Euler equations, with less regular data

▼ Abstract: In this work, we investigate the interaction of a spray of thin particles with a Newtonian, viscous and incompressible fluid. The fluid is governed by the Alfa-
Navier-
Stokes equations, whereas the particles/droplets of the spray are described by a density function that satisfies a Vlasov type equation or, when the particles' diffusion is considered, an equation of Vlasov-Fokker-Planck type. The equations are coupled by a drag force, which depends on the relative velocity of the fluid and the spray particles, and the density function. We assume periodic conditions in the spatial domain. For the system of Alfa-
Navier-
Stokes-Vlasov equations we prove existence and regularity of global in-time weak solutions. Furthermore, we investigate the behavior of the solutions when the parameter alfa tends to 0. For the system of equations of Alfa-
Navier-
Stokes-Vlasov-Fokker-Planck we analyze the existence of global in-time weak solutions

Navier boundary condition. We consider the solution of this model obtained by David Hoff in the paper (Compressible Flow in a Half-Space with

Our main result states that if the initial velocity belongs to the Sobolev space H8, with 8 >1/2, then the integral curves of the velocity field, i.e. the particles paths, there exist and are unique. We also show some properties of this flow map

Enfin on mentionne quelques problèmes ouverts.
This thesis deals with equations of fluid dynamics. We consider the following two models: one is the Navier-Stokes equation in R3 with an external force, the other one is the Prandtl equation on the half plane. For the Navier-Stokes system, we focus on the local in time existence, uniqueness, long-time behavior and blowup criterion. For the Prandtl equation on the half-plane, we consider the Gevrey regularity. This thesis consists in four chapters. In the first chapter, we introduce some background on equations of fluid dynamics and recall the physical meaning of the above two models as well as some well-known mathematical results. Next, we state our main results and motivations briefly. At last we mention some open problems. The second chapter is devoted to the Cauchy problem for…

▼ Le but
de cette thèse est
de faire des simulations prédictives à partir
de modèles
de turbulence
de type RANS (Reynolds-Averaged
Navier-
Stokes).
