▼ Wind generation presents variability on every time scale, which must be accommodated by the electric grid. Limited quantities of wind power can be successfully integrated by the current generation and demand-side response mix but, as deployment of variable resources increases, the resulting variability becomes increasingly difficult and costly to mitigate. In Chapter 2, we model a co-located power generation/energy storage block composed of wind generation, a gas turbine, and fast-ramping energy storage. A scenario analysis identifies system configurations that can generate power with 30% of energy from wind, a variability of less than 0.5% of the desired power level, and an average cost around $70/MWh.
While energy storage technologies have existed for decades, fast-ramping grid-level storage is still an immature industry and is experiencing relatively rapid improvements in performance and cost across a variety of technologies. Decreased capital cost, increased power capability, and increased efficiency all would improve the value of an energy storage technology and each has cost implications that vary by application, but there has not yet been an investigation of the marginal rate of technical substitution between storage properties. The analysis in chapter 3 uses engineering-economic models of four emerging fast-ramping energy storage technologies to determine which storage properties have the greatest effect on cost-of-service. We find that capital cost of storage is consistently important, and identify applications for which power/energy limitations are important.
In some systems with a large amount of wind power, the costs of wind integration have become significant and market rules have been slowly changing in order to internalize or control the variability of wind generation. Chapter 4 examines several potential market strategies for mitigating the effects of wind variability and estimate the effect that each strategy would have on the operation and profitability of wind farms. We find that market scenarios using existing price signals to motivate wind to reduce variability allow wind generators to participate in variability reduction when the market conditions are favorable, and can reduce short-term (30-minute) fluctuations while having little effect on wind farm revenue.

▼ With the possibility of a global energy crisis on the horizon, the need for renewable energy processes is more crucial than ever before. Solar energy, specifically solar concentrated collectors can provide a green alternative to fossil fuel consumption, but several factors need to be considered to improve their efficiency and make them viable. The present research is aimed at the development of a novel “Optical Guide” to improve performance of traditional thermal receivers in Parabolic Dish Solar Collectors for use in a domestic solar water heater with PCM latent heat storage integration. Two ray trace programs, SolTrace and Tracer were used to model heat flux distributions developed at the bottom of the optical guide for various altitude angles with results indicating SolTrace to be the most accurate modelling tool for high resolution, reliable flux profiles. Generated flux distributions can be used to model heating mechanisms in the thermal storage unit, once favourable profiles for selected PCMs are determined. Mathematical modelling of the heat exchanger with integrated PCM, conducted under several assumptions to simplify heat transfer mechanisms, will be used to provide the framework for detailed development of the thermal storage system.

▼ Arbetet besvarar frågan ”Kan gasturbinen och kraftvärmeanläggningar vara ett alternativ som reservkraft på svenska sjukhus?”. Ett stort intresse för gasturbiner är vad som ledde oss fram till frågan samt vår undran varför inte gasturbiner används mer som reservkraftaggregat, idag används till exempel dieselaggregat på de flesta sjukhusen. Frågan besvaras genom en litteraturstudie där vetenskapligt material, såsom publikationer i tidskrifter och böcker studeras. En intervju hos WSP har genomförts, WSP är ett företag som delvis sysslar med installation av reservkraft. Genom intervjun kunde de ge sina åsikter och erfarenheter kring reservkraft och gasturbiner. Rapporten samlar ett resultat kring olika aspekter som är avgörande för att besvara frågeställningen. Några av dessa faktorer är underhållet, kostnaderna och driftsäkerheten på både gasturbinen samt kraftvärmeanläggningen. I underhållskapitlet besvarar rapporten varför det visar sig att underhållet är lågt för en anläggning som ligger stilla majoriteten av tiden. I kostnadskapitlet jämförs olika kostnader som visar att gasturbinen är ett klart billigare alternativ än konkurrerande dieselmotoranläggningar. I driftsäkerhetskapitlet visar det sig hur gasturbinen har blivit väldigt mycket bättre på de senaste åren vilket gör den klart tillräckligt drift- och startsäker för att kunna användas till reservkraft. Rapportens slutsats visar att gasturbinen och kraftvärmeanläggningar skulle kunna vara ett alternativ som reservkraft både på industrier och sjukhus där el och värmebehovet är högt och prioriterat.

▼ The solar energy field has grown vastly in the past decades, and this trend seems to continue also in the future. But there is still a lot of work to be done in order to make solar energy competitive to other energy production systems. Because of this, there is constant research toward improving existing solar energy systems, and to find new materials to lower the initial cost and increase efficiency of energy producing units. Recently, a material called perovskite has received a lot of attention from the solar industry by potentially offering a cheap and efficient material for solar cell production. With efficiency increasing every year, this could potentially be the next dominant design for solar energy extraction. One of the main concerns brought up related to this new technology is the lead content of the perovskite solar cell. Because of the toxic nature of lead, and the potential of these cells to be produced in large quantities in the future, the possible impacts of lead to the environment have to be assessed. This thesis consists of life cycle assessment of a perovskite solar cell and comparison to the currently most used common solar cell, which is the silicon solar cell. Several parameters were varied in the study in order to see which processes that have the largest influence to the environmental performance. From the study, it was found that perovskite solar cells could be competitive with silicon solar cells from an environmental point of view if produced on a large scale. Management of lead use and emissions during the production process of perovskite cells had the largest impact on the results. If all of the lead used would be supplied from recycling, and emissions of lead from the cell itself during and after the use phase is completely prevented, perovskite cells show better environmental performance than silicon cells. Regarding manufacturing technology, the study showed that the blade coating technology is environmentally preferable over spin coating for large scale production of perovskite cells.

▼ With intermittent renewable power being integrated in the power system, which is targeted to increase in the future as countries attain their renewable energy goals, there has been increased concern over solving the problem of intermittency. Demand Side Management (DSM) is an energy management concept which targets the demand side of the energy system and has gained lot of attention in recent times because of its potential to solve the issue of intermittency. Load shifting is one of the DSM measures which intends at shifting the demand towards more favourable time periods. Electricity consumption in Swedish households holds a significant share of Sweden’s total electricity consumption (around 29%). The possibility of getting charged for consumed electricity on hourly cost basis in Sweden has also opened an opportunity for electricity consumers to reduce their electricity costs by managing their loads. This thesis work investigates the potential for DSM in the form of load shifting common residential electrical loads in Swedish households. The loads examined are dishwasher, laundry and water heater loads. The possible effect on the load curve at a national level is also analysed. Further analysis has been made to estimate possible monetary savings that can be attained by consumers through load shifting. An optimization model built on a GAMS platform is used to calculate a shifting of load in order to minimize yearly cost of consuming electricity. The model is based on linear and mixed integer programming which gives least-cost load curve as an output. The Swedish households are divided into various archetypes, and for each of these a monetary saving potential is calculated. The scaling up of the results from the model is done based on statistical data available for Sweden to calculate the load shifting potential on the national level. The results indicate a significant load shift potential with reduction in peak hours reaching 6% of the peak load. However, savings in monetary terms for individual households is quite modest (~100 SEK) pointing towards a low motivation for consumers to manage their loads. The results also show that the water heating load forms a large part of the load which can be shifted and this load shift is highly seasonal. Thus the overall potential depends upon level of hourly price fluctuation and the season.

▼ Lithium-ion battery technologies have always been accompanied by severe safety issues; therefore recent research efforts have focused on improving battery safety. In large part, the hazardous nature of lithium-ion batteries stems from the high flammability of liquid electrolytes. Consequently, numerous researchers have attempted to replace liquid electrolytes with nonflammable solid electrolytes in order to avoid potential safety problems. Unfortunately, current solid electrolytes are incapable of performing as effectively as liquid electrolytes in lithium-ion batteries due to inferior electrochemical capabilities. While some "all-solid-state" batteries have found niche application, further technological advancement is required for large scale replacement of liquid-based batteries. The goal of this research is to develop all-solid-state batteries that can outperform liquid batteries and understand the mechanisms that dictate battery operation and behavior. This involves fabrication of highly conducting solid electrolytes, production and analyzation of batteries employing state-of-the-art electrode materials, and generation of high power and high
energy density lithium batteries. In this dissertation, the first objective was to manufacture highly conducting solid electrolytes that are stable in contact with lithium metal. Numerous characterization techniques were used to gain understanding of physical and chemical properties of solid electrolytes, as well as mechanisms for fast ion conduction. A new process for production of highly conducting and stable solid electrolytes is developed and materials are used to evaluate performance of electrodes in an all-solid-state construction. The second objective of this work was to research the performance of both positive and negative electrodes incorporating solid electrolyte. Evaluation of electrochemical results allowed for a good understanding of reaction mechanisms taking place within composite battery materials and at electrolyte/electrode interfaces. Variation of solid electrolyte make-up and composite electrode architecture reveals numerous advantages of solid state batteries over liquid batteries. The third and final objective of this work was to demonstrate high
energy/power density all-solid-state rechargeable batteries. Electrode materials with fast lithium diffusion and kinetic properties were investigated. Alteration of particle size and testing temperature exposed the capability of solid state batteries to achieved high performance, comparable to that of liquid electrolyte batteries.

As nuclear power needs to have a well- functioningsafety system for cooling the reactor and prevent contamination in case of anaccident, the components of this system must be maintained in a functioningcondition.The aim of this report is to find a system for predicting malfunction in the valveactuators in one of the safety systems in Forsmark nuclear plant. This is done byanalysing the curve of the consumed power generated during ordinary valve operationand testing to extract key values. Key values include time of the operation, middlepower, total power, peak value, standard deviation, frequency density between 0 and10 Hz and frequency density between 20 and 30 Hz. These values, in turn, are used intwo methods to identify faults. The first method is classification via machine learningand the second is a calculation of the Mahalaniobis distance.None of these methods proved useful in analysing the most commonly reported faultsin the valve actuators but some evidence suggests that an analysis of the Mahalaniobisdistance can be used to detect faults in the power converter and faults relating towear of the mechanical components.

▼ The objective of the present work is to improve the accuracy of Actuator Line Modeling (ALM) in predicting the unsteady aerodynamic loadings on turbine blades and turbine wake by assessing different methods used to determine the relative velocity between the rotating blades and wind. ALM is incorporated into a Large Eddy Simulation (LES) solver in OpenFOAM (Open Field Operations and Manipulations). The aerodynamic loadings are validated by experiment results from National Renewable
Energy Laboratory (NREL). Turbine wakes are validated by predictions of large eddy simulation using exact 3D blade geometries from a two-blade NREL Phase VI turbine. Three different relative velocity calculation methods are presented: iterative process in Blade Element Momentum (BEM) theory, local velocity sampling, and Lagrange-Euler Interpolation (LEI). Loadings and wakes obtained from these three methods are compared. It is discovered that LEI functions better than the conventional BEM with iterative process in both loading and wake prediction. Then LES-ALM with LEI is performed on a small wind farm deploying five NREL Phase VI turbines in full wake setting. The power outputs and force coefficients of downstream turbines are evaluated. The LES-ALM with LEI is also performed on a small wind farm deploying 25 NREL Phase VI turbines with different inflow angles (from full wake setting to partial wake setting). The power outputs and force coefficients of each turbine are evaluated under different inflow angles (the angle the rotor has to turn to make the rotor plane face the incoming wind) (0, 5, 15, 30 and 45 degree). The power coefficient distributions and thrust coefficient distributions of the wind farm under each inflow angle are compared. The range of inflow angle which is best for power generation is also discussed. The results demonstrate that the LES-ALM with LEI has the potential to optimize wind farm arrangement and pitch angle of individual turbines.

▼ Well-founded research is needed to gain sound insights into the relationship between energy and the environment in order to ensure a basis for responsible policy-making in the face of a climate crisis. Transparency in code and data is a prerequisite for reproducible research in energy modelling and its quality assurance and is embedded in the philosophy of open source energy modelling frameworks (OSEMFs). While the focus was on improving the quality of input data and comparing models to compare results, there has been a lack of research on the effects of the structural assumptions across different frameworks. This thesis analyses the structural differences and structural assumptions between the OSEMFs OSeMOSYS and oemof. The methodology applies a wholly harmonised experimental setup to allocate output differences to diverging contextual assumptions in the underlying different mathematical equations among the OSEMFs. Diverging results between OSEMFs based on different structural assumptions occurred in this thesis and traced back to their origin. OSeMOSYS's and oemof's underlying energy balance equations lead to the same results though, when diverging structural assumptions are removed. Already a single undocumented opaque assumption in the underlying mathematical equations among frameworks can have a noticeable influence on the optimisation results. The documentation of OSEMFs is still not comprehensive enough to facilitate investigations of this kind efficiently, and the documentation of assumptions embedded in OSEMFs’ mathematical equations needs to be more detailed. The thesis could identify opportunities to enhance the performance of OSeMOSYS and highlights the importance of correct framework documentations to ensure their usability in practice.
Välgrundad forskning är fundamentalt för att få en god insikt i förhållandet mellan energi och miljö för att säkerställa en grund för ansvarsfullt beslutsfattande inför diverse klimatkriser. Transparens i kod och data är en förutsättning för reproducerbar forskning inom energimodellering, dess kvalitetssärkring och är inbäddad i filosifin som behandlas av Open Source Energy Modelling Frameworks (OSEMF). Den primära fokusen av rapporten behandlar förbättring av kvaliteten av inmatningsdata och att jämföra resultatet från olika modeller. Det visar sig även finnas forskningsbrister inom effekterna av de strukturella antagagendana i dessa ramverk. Examensarbetet analyserar strukturella skillnader och strukturella antagendan mellan OSEMF, OSeMOSYS och eomof. In thermodynamics, three current methods exist for thermal storage: sensible heat storage,latent heat storage, and heat storage by chemical reaction. The sensible heat storage is currently themost commonly used one and involves storing heat by shifting the temperature for the storage mediumwithout causing a phase change. The latent heat storage is very much similar but with the dierencethat the medium goes through a phase change. Finally the thermochemical heat storage which diersfrom the two earlier methods by utilizing the advantage of reversible chemical processes.The purpose of this thesis is rst to establish a literature study on current studies and applications oncontrol strategy's for primarily latent heat storage, but for sensible as well. The literature study willbe composed of scientic articles and books, and a few interviews. The second part of this thesis is togenerate concept solutions for latent heat storage control strategies and a nalized design is visualizedby CAD.Based on the literature study, it can be concluded that the control technique between sensible heatstorage and latent heat storage varies because of the principles of storage. Sensible heat storage usesthe transfer uid as the material of storage which facilitate the control strategy as it is therefore only amatter of ow rate. Latent heat storage's have the transfer uid and the material of storage separatedand it requires a heat transfer process between them. Therefore, controlling the latent heat storage becomesnot only a matter of ow rate but also of contact area and conduction. On top of this, the storagematerial changes phase, which causes a reduction in power over time due to thermal resistance, andthe storage capacity will decrease because storage material for latent heat storage usually deteriorateover time. Since the storage principles dier between latent and sensible heat storage's, the establishedcontrol strategy for sensible heat storage's cannot be easily applied to latent heat storage's. ▼ I takt med kraftigare lagstagning gällande energianvändningen för småhus ställs högre krav på isolering och lufttäthet vilket syftar till att minska energiförluster under uppvärmningssäsong. I dessa välisolerade och täta hus finns det under sommartid en risk för överhettning. De höga inomhustemperaturerna bidrar negativt till den termiska komforten och hälsan för de inneboende. För att under sommartid hålla nere inomhustemperaturen krävs någon form av kylsystemlösning. Studien modelleras i simulink där tre olika småhus från Anebyhusgruppen simuleras vid olika geografiska positioner i Sverige och Norge under perioden maj till september. För att backa upp antagandet om att kylbehov har ökat på senare tid, så har ett typexempel på ett hus som kan antas vara byggt på 1990-talet simulerats. Kylsystemlösningar utvärderas i hur effektivt de kan hålla en god termisk komfort, samt dess ekonomiska- och miljömässiga påverkan. Kylsystemlösningar som studien undersökt har valts ut i samråd med Flexit AB. Kyllösningar som studien undersöker är luft/luftvärmepump, luft/vattenvärmepump, markförlagd ventilation och nattventilation, solskydden som studien undersöker är persienn och markis. Kyllösningarna och solskydden utreds enskilt och i kombination med varandra. Utredningen visar att luft/luftvärmepumpen i kombination med solskydden persienn eller markis är de mest effektiva kylsystemlösningarna för att hålla en god termisk komfort. Jämförs kylsystemlösningarna i kostnadseffektivitet är nattventilation och markförlagd ventilation de bästa lösningarna och jämförs kylsystemlösningarna i energieffektivitet är solskydden persienn och markis de bästa lösningarna. Utredning visar att kylsystemlösningarnas energi som krävs för att producera komfortkyla har låg inverkan på det totala energikravet för småhuset. Studien visar att solinstrålning är den största posten för uppvärmning av småhus. Detta leder indirekt till att fönsterarean, i vilka väderstreck fönstren är placerade och användningen av solskydd är avgörande för dess överhettningsrisk. Att komplettera ett småhus med åtgärder som hindrar solinstrålning från att ta sig in i småhuset är ofta kostnads- och energieffektiva och kan förbättra den termiska komforten. Därför skulle en fortsatt forskning inom ämnet solskydd vara av stor vikt.

▼ This study aimed at refining and improving current methodology concerning large-scale heat pump performance. This study was performed on two large-scale ground source heat pumps located in Solna (Stockholm). These were connected to an aquifer thermal energy storage system which provided heating and cooling for two office buildings. The heat pumps had been equipped with preliminary sensors from the BMS (Building management system) and been in operation since 2016. In 2019, additional detailed measurement equipment from ClimaCheck was installed to collect comprehensive data from the heat pumps to allow a more comprehensive performance evaluation. This study was primarily performed by data pre-processing of the BMS-data and the ClimaCheck-data. Once this was done, the ClimaCheck parameters were backtracked and recalculated. Subsequently new models for system evaluation was implemented. The most desired parameter to replace in the ClimaCheck model was the mass flow rate, which they obtain though an energy balance over the compressors. The latter part of the study was to see whether the BMS had sufficient data to provide the same information as ClimaCheck. This was done by implementing a regression of the BMS-data, where the heating and cooling capacities from ClimaCheck were used as targets. The results from the study showed that implementing a mass flow rate based upon compressor efficiency instead of an assumed heat loss was difficult and only reliable for higher loads. When evaluating the ClimaCheck parameters, interesting results were found concerning their calculations for the heating capacity, which might not be calculated the way they express in their formulas. The regression from the BMS-data was proven difficult because of the insufficient and lacking data for some instances. Five different models were produced and compared, some models showed accuracy up to 95% depending on the desired metric. It can be concluded that it is possible to estimate the key performance indicators using the BMS-data. It yields good results for the COP’s and very accurate results for the SPF’s over a year. This makes it possible to evaluate the heat pump performance for years prior to the installation of the ClimaCheck system.

▼ Syftet med detta projekt var att skapa underlaget till ett personligt digitalt verktyg. Verktyget, som är menat att vara en applikation till smarttelefoner, ska hjälpa den enskilde individen att minska sin negativa inverkan på miljön. Detta ska skegenom att appen hjälper individen att hitta ett mer hållbart sätt att leva. Detta genom att både informera användaren om vad den vardagliga konsumtionen orsakarsamt hitta alternativ till dagens levnadssätt. Det beslutsfattande elementet iverktyget skulle bygga på en metod som är framtagen av Joakim Karlsson. Denna metod går ut på att presentera alternativ parvis för användaren och genom attvikta alternativen sortera ut överflödiga jämförelser.För att kunna presentera klimatsmarta alternativ för användaren behövdes en databas med statistik på utsläpp som produkter orsakar inom alla konsumtionområden. En litteraturstudie utfördes där möjligheterna till att bygga en sådan databas undersöktes. Konsumtionsmönster undersöktes som skulle möjliggöra en miljömässigt hållbar levnadsstandard. Vidare studerades motivationsmetoder som, genom att föras in i appen, skulle bidra till att fler individer lyckas genomgå en förändring. Slutligen sammanställdes en simulering av appen och möjliga vägar för att kommersialisera produkten utvärderades. Nedan följer en lista av kortfattade slutsatser och resultat. • Att basera appens beslutsprocess på Joachim Karlssons metod fungerar ochär lämplig att integrera i en app som är anpassad för en individ. • En databas som innehåller statistik för utsläpp av produkter är teoretisktmöjligt att bygga, men alldeles för tidskrävande i detta projekt. 15 datapunkter samlades istället in för att simulera funktionen. • De tekniker och teorier som studerats inom motivationsmetoder har lett tillen diskussion kring hur dessa kan implementeras i appen. • Marknadsanalysen synliggjorde företaget Svalna som utvecklat en liknande app. Efter ett möte där de visade intresse för underlaget som utvecklats idenna studie övervägdes de olika vägarna för att kommersialisera underlaget. Slutsatsen som drogs var att det bästa alternativet för fortsatt arbete är ettsamarbete med Svalna.
The purpose of this project was to lay the foundations for a personal digital tool.The tool, which is intended to be an application for smartphones, will be designed to help individuals reduce their negative impact on the environment. ▼ Biogasanläggningar har oftast en relativt låg verkningsgrad och en låg lönsamhet, detta har gjort att biogasens potential inte utnyttjas till fullo utan används endast till några få procent globalt. Till följd av detta har Innovationsverket i Gamelby, i samarbete med KTH sedan hösten 2014 tagit fram en analys av hur ett framtida gårdsbaserat biogassystem kan se ut och samtidigt vara mer energioptimalt än dagens motsvarigheter. Företaget International Micro Biogas AB har skapats och patent har beviljats. Detta arbete syftar på att ta fram en komplett energianalys av ett småskaligt gårdsbaserat biogassystem utifrån dess huvudkomponenter, vilket har utförts genom att analysera tidigare examens- och projektarbeten som genomförts i samarbete mellan Innovationsverket och KTH, för att ur dessa dra ut relevanta delar och skapa det övergripande systemet. Energidata för de ingående huvudkomponenterna analyserades och beräkningar utfördes i Microsoft Excel. En Excelfil har skapats där det genom att ange gårdens antal kor går att beräkna den årliga energiåtgången för det gårdsbaserade biogassystemet, denna rapports resultat baserades på en gård med 200 kor. Sammanställningen av systemets huvudkomponenter resulterade i en energiåtgång på 385 MWh per år. Det nya gårdsbaserade biogassystemet har visat sig ha en god potential ur ett energiperspektiv och skulle med stor sannolikhet kunna bli självförsörjande om en optimering av systemet skulle genomföras.
Commercial biogas facilities often tend to have a relative low efficiency and low profitability, resulting in the worldwide biogas potential not being utilized to its full extent. Consequently, since autumn 2014, Innovationsverket in Gamelby has in collaboration with KTH analysed the potential of a farm-based biogas system compared to the energy efficiency of today’s equivalents. The company International Micro Biogas AB was started, and patents has been granted. This essay aims to conduct a comprehensive energy analysis of a small-scale farm-based biogas facility based on its main components, which has been performed by evaluating preceding master theses and project assignments conducted by the collaboration between Innovationsverket and KTH, with the goal of compiling information from these and creating the comprehensive system. The energy data of the main components were analysed, and calculations were conducted in Microsoft Excel. An Excel spreadsheet were one can insert essential farm data to calculate the yearly energy expenditure of a biogas facility has been created. This study was conducted with the intention of utilizing 200 cows as the essential data and the collection of the energy components output resulted in a yearly energy consumption of 385 MWh. The new farm-based biogas facility has displayed great potential, from an energy consumption perspective, and could with high probability become self-sufficient if an optimization of the system were conducted.

▼ Det här projektet är gjort som kandidatexamensarbete inom hållbar energiteknik på KTH vårterminen 2020. I dagens samhälle ställs höga krav på butiker och odlare att alla typer av färska grönsaker, örter och frukter ska finnas tillgängligt året om, oavsett säsong eller klimat. Detta medför mycket frakt och stor miljöpåverkan samt höga priser. Att odla nära konsumenterna värdesätts i en värld som blir mer och mer miljömedveten. Genom stadsodlingar och inomhusodlingar kan grönsaksproduktionen komma närmare slutkonsumenten och på så sätt minskar transporten och priserna förväntas sjunka. Dessa odlingar är ofta hydroponiska, det vill säga att odlingen sker utan jord och istället används vatten med näringslösning. I urbana miljöer är dessa odlingar oftast belysta med artificiellt ljus då de ofta huserar inomhus i gamla lagerlokaler eller parkeringsgarage, redan färdiga byggnader med stor yta.I det här projektet har det undersökts om en hydroponisk odling skulle vara möjlig i ett bergrum i Jämtland som tidigare använts som ammunitionsfabrik och förråd av militären. I dagsläget är några av dessa rum omgjorda till en tunnel för längdskidåkning som heter MidSweden365, men delar av anläggningen används inte. Skidtunneln kyls ned av en kylanläggning som genererar spillvärme som idag inte tas tillvara på.Frågeställningarna för det här projektet är hur mycket värme en odling i ett bergrum skulle generera och om detta är tillräckligt för att hålla odlingen vid konstant temperatur eller om mer värme behöver tillsättas, till exempel med spillvärme från skidtunnelns kylanläggning. Det undersöktes också om en uppvärmning av närliggande bergrum skulle påverka skidtunnelns skyddande permafrost. För att svara på frågeställningarna beräknades energibalansen i odlingsrummet utifrån de krav som finns på växtbelysningen vad gäller dess ljusegenskaper, och därmed antal lampor som behövs, samt hur stor kyleffekt berget har. Växtlamporna är på och av i 12 timmars cykler, vilket medför att ingen värme generas under 12 timmar. För att ta reda på värmens fördelning i berget mellan utrymmena och vilken kyleffekt berget har på odlingsrummen gjordes simuleringar i COMSOL Multiphysics. Simuleringarna gjordes för olika fall då rummet haft olika fall av isolering samt för olika tidpunkter, 1 år och 10 år.Ur beräkningarna kunde det konstateras att den avgörande faktorn för antalet lampor är lampornas belysningarea och rummets totala energiåtgång bestämdes utifrån detta antal. Genom simuleringarna bestämdes det att värme behöver tillföras då lamporna både är av och på för alla fall av isolering för de två tidpunkterna. Permafrosten runt skidtunneln kommer att påverkas och efter 10 år förväntas den minska från 3 meter utan odling till mellan 1–1,8 meter från skidtunnelns vägg beroende på fall av isolering. Även om det blir en minskning av permafrosten anses det inte innebära ett problem för skidtunnelns fortsatta drift.

▼ This study aims to build a medium-term (2019-2040) model for the Chilean electricity generation system in the OSeMOSYS software, a linear cost optimisation model, in light of the most recent developments in government policy and targets. In 2019, the Chilean government committed to decommissioning all coal plants by 2040 at the latest, and set out a non-binding target to be carbon neutral by 2050. The carbon neutrality target could be enshrined in the climate change law, which has yet to be ratified. In this thesis, a focus was put on the upfront capital cost of the system, and the emissions attributable to Chile’s GHG Inventory (called the SNI GHG in Chile) from operating the system. Three scenarios are developed within the thesis, in line with three paths the power system may follow: a BAU scenario including current power purchase agreements, a scenario in which power purchase agreements for fossil fuels are bought out and the free market then takes over, and a non-conventional renewable energy (NCRE) scenario in which certain renewable technologies account for 68% of production in 2040. The model is validated against the results from 2019 and a broadly similar model developed in the private sector. Sensitivity analysis scenarios were conducted for the input parameters: price of natural gas, price of coal, capital cost of solar PV, capital cost of wind, capital cost of wind & solar, and the capacity factor of hydropower. The sensitivity analyses show the most sensitive input parameters are the price of natural gas and capital cost of wind with respect to the outputs of capital cost, NCRE production ratio such as the share of all solar, wind, and certain hydro technologies as a percentage of total electricity production and GHG emissions.
Denna studie syftar till att bygga en medelfristig (2019-2040) modell för det chilenska elproduktionssystemet i programvaran OSeMOSYS, en linjär kostnadsoptimeringsmodell, mot bakgrund av den senaste utvecklingen i regeringens politik och mål. År 2019 åtog sig den chilenska regeringen att stänga av alla kolanläggningar senast 2040 och fastställde ett icke-bindande mål att vara koldioxidneutralt år 2050. Målet om koldioxidneutralitet kan fastställas i lagen om klimatförändringar, som ännu inte har ratificeras. Detta arbete fokuserar på systemets kapitalkostnad i förväg och de utsläpp som kan hänföras till Chiles GHG-inventering, kallad SNI GHG i Chile, från drift av systemet. Tre scenarier utvecklas inom avhandlingen, i linje med tre scenarier som kraftsystemet kan följa: ett BAU-scenario inklusive nuvarande kraftköpsavtal, ett scenario där kraftköpsavtal för fossila bränslen köps ut och den fria marknaden sedan tar över, och ett scenario med icke-konventionell förnybar energi (NCRE) där vissa förnybara tekniker står för 68% av produktionen 2040. ▼ A feature of the Smart Grid is the utilization of flexible load in the power system. The presence of flexible load allows part of the power consumption to be shifted from peak hours to off-peak hours; this change in power consumption is called a load shift. If the usage pattern of appliances is identified, it is possible to estimate the capacity of a potential load shift as well as evaluate if the utilization of flexible load in the power system results in a load shift. This master thesis project aims to create a model which works as an aid when studying usage patterns by identifying when appliances that contribute to the load shift are active. The model should be able to give approximations of the switch-on and switch-off time of the appliances using only information from a single meter that measures the total power consumption of the entire household. Recently, artificial neural networks have been successfully applied to these kinds of problems. The constructed model thus includes neural networks which regress the start time and end time of a target appliance. The networks are trained and evaluated both on simulated data and on real measured data from the Stockholm Royal Seaport project. The model is able to give highly accurate estimates of the start and stop time when trained with simulated data. When using real data the accuracy of the model is relatively low. In order to increase the performance the neural network part of the model has to be trained on a larger dataset. A study of how the sampling time of the input affects the performance of the model is also carried out. The results show no evidence that the sampling time affects the accuracy of the model. However, the architecture of the neural networks trained to recognize data with different sampling frequencies are not identical; if the pooling layers of all networks were removed it might be possible to establish a connection between sampling time and performance.

▼ Electricity is a fundamental part a functioning society. Ghana’s electricity system is strained by an ever-growing climate instability and increase of population. Therefore, it is crucial for the country's development that it's electricity supply is done in a sustainable way. This report aims to analyze Ghana’s ability to reach SDG 7.1 and the Marrakech Vision, an outcome from the COP 22 meeting in Morocco. This was done by creating a model over Ghana’s electricity system and how it develops over time, called BAU, using the analytical tools: OSeMOSYS and OnSSET. A practical implementation of BAU was then discussed. After that, three development scenarios with different renewable energy targets for the electricity system, were implemented in the model. The results show that CSP and natural gas power plants were the most prominent electricity producers. The growing share of renewable energy in the target scenarios was mostly due to wind power, replacing the natural gas power plants. Ghana has local natural gas resources as well as high solar potential. The rising share of renewable energy limits the fossil fuel emission. At the same time, this increased share also endangers the reliability of the electricity supply, as the capacity of renewable energy resources fluctuate and could lead to high investment costs. BAU can be a possible solution which minimizes the fossil fuel consumption and limits the CO2 emissions, but at the risk of possibly having an unreliable electricity supply. To be able to meet SDG 7.1, increasing the share of renewable energy in electricity generation can be a solution, but at the same time, not all requirements of the goal will be fulfilled.
Elektricitet är en grundläggande del av ett välfungerande samhälle. Ghanas elsystem påfrestas allt mer av skiftande klimat och växande befolkning. Därför är det oumbärligt för landets utveckling att elförsörjningen sker på ett hållbart sätt. Denna rapport syftar till att undersöka Ghanas förmåga att uppnå SDG 7.1 och Marrakech-visionen, vilken landet förband sig till under COP 22 mötet i Marocko. Detta genomfördes genom att utveckla en modell över Ghanas elsystem och dess utveckling, kallad BAU, med de digitala verktygen: OSeMOSYS och OnSSET. Därefter diskuterades dess genomförbarhet. Fortsatt undersöktes tre utvecklingsscenarier med olika mål för andel förnybar energi i elproduktionen, i modellen. Resultatet visar på att CSP och gaskraftverk var de mest framträdande elproducenterna. En stigande andel förnybar energi utspelade sig som en ökad elproduktion från vindkraftverk och minskad från gaskraftverk. Ghana besitter naturgastillgångar och hög solpotential. Den stigande andelen förnybar energi begränsar koldioxidutsläppen. ▼ Fossil fuels constitute roughly 80 % of the world’s energy supply and of this amount oil makes up almost one third. The combustion of these fossil fuels leads to increasing levels of greenhouse gases, causing a warming of the earth through the so called greenhouse effect. Because of this, several environmental and energy goals have been established by both the European Union and Sweden. The purpose of this thesis was to investigate how the use of fossil fuels can be reduced in companies that use oil for heating, in Gävleborg County. The thesis was divided into four problems to be solved. First, the companies that fit this description was identified by contacting energy advisors at municipalities. The second task was to investigate how willing these companies were to change to some other form of heating, which meant creating and sending a survey to them. It was also investigated what other aspects can affect a companies’ decision making, both technical and behavioural. The technical aspects meant listing and discussing some of the technical difficulties that can hinder a company from changing heating technology. Behavioural aspects were investigated using the comments left on the survey as well as research on the topic of barriers and driving forces that can affect companies. The final task was to estimate the reduction in CO2 emissions that could be achieved. This was done with data for the companies that answered that they wanted to change to some other form of heating and assumption regarding to the amount of emissions from different fuels. It was found that 95 companies use oil in Gävleborg County and 26 of these companies answered the survey to some extent, although results were only based on 24 of these answers. On the question of whether companies could consider changing to a different heating system, the same number (nine) that said “yes” also said “no”. There were many reasons for a company not wanting to change. Technical difficulties might be proximity to district heating net, not being able to install heat pumps, lacking infrastructure for biomass supply or being too close to a densely populated area to use biomass. Even so, it was concluded that for every company there is a possible technical solution. Behavioural aspects were also found to be numerous. Some companies answered that their reason for not changing was not owning their working facility and seeing the heating need as being too low to justify an investment. The research collected stated that lack of time, lack of money and having other priorities are important barriers. Meaning that to help companies change heating system, financial aid should be given, for example in the form of subsidies and soft loans. It can also be important to provide consulting assistance and informing companies of energy related issues and the benefits of dealing with them. The other answers to the survey varied a lot. ▼ The purpose of this degree project is to examine power outages that has occurred during the years 2009 and 2016 on Mälarenergi Elnät distribution grid. Interruptions that has occurred on 10 kV voltage level and on overhead lines or underground cable was examined. The examined interruptions are based on the DARWin data from Mälarenergi Elnät. The examined interruptions resulted in four different test grids. Test grid A are overhead line grid in rural area, test grid B are mixed grid in rural area, test grid C are underground cable grid in semi urban area and test grid D are underground cable grid in urban area. Test grid C and D which have the highest customer density were then used for reliability analysis. The reliability analysis was performed using Microsoft Excel. The main focus for the reliability analysis were the impact of different sectioning times. Another focus for the reliability analysis was introducing breakers at key-points in test grid C. The primarily cause of interruptions on overhead line grids are weather related events and on underground cable grids it is digging and fabrication or material errors. It is concluded that with quicker sectioning times, the reliability of the grid increases linearly. The introduction of breakers at key-points in the grid results in increased reliability.

▼ Biokol har potential att vända trenden med ökande halter av koldioxid i atmosfären. Genom pyrolys formeras kolet i biomassan i stabil form i hundratals till tusentals år. Ett positivt klimatavtryck skapas genom att avskilja kol ifrån den snabba omsättning som förbränning och kompostering innebär. Biokolet har även jordförbättrande egenskaper genom sin porösa struktur och stora aktiva yta vilket kan nyttjas av både jordbruk, hobbyodling och urban grönstruktur. Stockholm har i ett innovativt projekt satt upp en pilotanläggning för biokolsproduktion införlivat i ett urbant flöde. Trädgårdsavfall ifrån villaträdgårdar matas in i biokolsanläggningen, värmen som alstras under processen växlas mot fjärrvärmenätet och biokolet delas ut till boende i staden samt används i stadens planteringar. Syftet med denna undersökning är att utvärdera betydelsen av biomassans bearbetning eftersom mängden energi och resurser som investeras i förbehandlingen påverkar projektets totala hållbarhetspotential. Genom att praktiskt testa detta kan användbar kunskap gagna biokolsprojektet och liknande projekt samt agera förstudie till vidare forskning och utveckling. Två olika bearbetade fraktioner av biomassa undersöktes empiriskt i anläggningen under driftens första månader. Analyser av biobränslen och producerat biokol utfördes av ett ackrediterat laboratorium och driftsfunktionen observerades. Fraktionerna bearbetades med olika metoder vilket medförde olika egenskaper. Den ena var av krossat biomassa där stor andel oorganiskt material följt med och den andra var huggen flis i dimensionen 30mm. Ingen av de testade fraktionerna fungerade tillfredställande i drift. Den krossade biomassan innehöll för mycket små partiklar vilket gav problem med valvning och matning. Hög askhalt och lågt värmevärde gjorde att mycket extern energi behövde tillföras. Den flisade fraktionen innehöll för många bitar som översteg 30mm vilket orsakade många driftstopp. Analysen visade på hög askhalt i den andra fraktionens biokol vilket kan tyda på att förbränning förekommit. Företeelsen bör undersökas närmare. På grund av ojämn drift och andra osäkerheter bör inte de resultat som balansräkningarna för kol och energi visar betraktas som representativa tal för utbyten i anläggningen, utan endast ligga till grund för diskussion, jämförelse och planering av fortsatta försök. Första prioritet för biokolsprojektet bör vara att finna en fungerande fraktion, exempelvis genom att sålla bort de minsta partiklarna ur krossat material eller att hugga fliset i mindre dimensioner. Därefter kan vidare undersökningar göras i syfte att justera systemet för att förbättra egenskaper hos biokolet och dess produktionsprocess.

▼ Genom att samhället utvecklas och bland annat strävar mot effektivare energianvändning, ökning av andelen förnyelsebara energikällor samt sänkta koldioxidutsläpp. Är det ofrånkomligt att energisystemen i samhället inte påverkas. Bland annat så krävs det inte lika mycket energi för att täcka byggnaders energibehov i dag än tidigare. Detta medför att energisystemen i samhället utvecklas och strävar efter att bli mer effektiva. I Sverige är fjärrvärmen den vanligaste uppvärmningsformen där mer än 50 % av alla bostäder och lokaler använder fjärrvärme som värmekälla. Fjärrvärmens grundtanke är mycket enkel och beprövad. Den går ut på att producera värme storskaligt vid ett eller flera värmeverk och distribuera värmen i två stålrör som ligger nedgrävda i marken ut till kunder som har värmebehov. När värmen når kunden genom framledningsröret finns där en fjärrvärmecentral som växlar värmen till fastighetens egna interna värmesystem. Det avkylda fjärrvärmevattnet pumpas då tillbaka i det andra röret (returledningen) till produktionsanläggningen för att återigen värmas upp. Genom åren har fjärrvärmen utvecklas, och ser man från de första fjärrvärmesystemen (generation 1) till dagens system (generation 3) har utvecklingen generellt varit att gå mot lägre temperaturer i systemen. Man menar nu att det är hög tid att gå från generation 3 till 4:e generationens system som generellt strävar efter att sänka temperaturerna ytterligare i systemen. Sänkta temperaturer gällande fjärrvärmesystem har visat sig ge positiva effekter gällande ekonomi, miljö och resursutnyttjande. Dels så ger sänkta temperaturer effektivare produktion eftersom mer el kan genereras i kraftvärmeverken och större andel rökgaskondensering kan användas samt att mer integrering av spill- och restvärme från industrier kan utnyttjas. Det finns olika förslag på hur man ska gå mot lägre temperaturer i systemen. Rapporten ämnar att undersöka om en ny fjärrvärmeteknik som kallas 4GDH- 3P kan vara lönsam att redan idag implementeras i befintliga fjärrvärmenät. Teknikens grundtanke är att förlägga 3 distributionsledningar istället för 2, detta för att kunna få ner temperaturerna samt spara energi och helt enkelt få mer effektiva system. Tekniken är i grunden till för nyanslutningar av lågenergihus och är under utveckling. I denna studie undersöks vilka möjligheter som finns i att ansluta ett exploateringsområde på 63 lägenheter i Borlänge. Kostnader jämförs, beräkningar på hur mycket energi som kan sparas samt vilka möjligheter det finns att sänka temperaturerna i nätet med hjälp av tekniken utreds. Resultaten visar att den nya tekniken är relativt dyr att bygga jämfört med att bygga på konventionellt sätt. I detta sammanhang visar det sig att investeringen av den nya tekniken uppskattas bli ca: 70 % dyrare än vanlig konventionell byggnation. Resultaten visar också att med den nya tekniken kan man teoretisk gå mot lägre returtemperaturer på uppemot 12,5 °C i en bestämd punkt i returledningen. ▼ Detta kandidatexamensarbete undersöker hur man på optimalt vis använder solpaneler i syfte att producera största möjliga mängd energi samt hur dessa kan generera största möjliga intäkter. Detta görs genom att jämföra solföljande och stationära paneler. Det har även undersökts huruvida geografisk plats har en påverkan på effekten av solföljning. Detta har gjorts genom att studera både Stockholm och München. Optimal uppställning av ett system av solpaneler inom en begränsad area samt effekten av både intern och extern smal skuggning är ytterligare områden som undersöks i detta arbete. Resultaten om solföljningens effekt samt optimal uppställning av panelerna i ett system av solpaneler har tagits fram genom simuleringar i Matlab. Resultaten kring effekten av skuggning har tagits fram genom en litteraturstudie samt experimentella mätningar. Studien visar att användning av solföljande paneler i Stockholm ökar energiproduktionen hos en solpanel med 39,2 % för solföljning i två dimensioner respektive 36,4 % i en dimension, medan ökningen i München blir något lägre med 27,1 % respektive 23,7 %. Utöver detta togs även två alternativa optimala ekonomiska scenarier fram för ett system av solpaneler på en begränsad yta. Antingen täcks hela takytan med horisontellt placerade paneler eller så placeras paneler i sex rader med en lutningsvinkel på 21 grader. Undersökningen av externa smala skuggors effekt på en solpanel tydde på att de skuggor som täckte fler av en solpanels slingor var de skuggor som hade påtaglig effekt på energiproduktionen. De slutsatser som dras utifrån dessa resultat är att solföljande solpaneler är värda att investera i, men att det ur ekonomisk synpunkt inte vore rimligt att installera solföljning i mer än en dimension. Av de två alternativa scenarierna för installation av solpaneler på en begränsad yta anses sex rader med en lutningsvinkel på 21 grader vara det mer realistiska alternativet då de begränsningar som applicerades på modellen som användes för att ta fram detta närmare motsvarar verkligheten. På grund av att smala skuggor som endast täcker en slinga av celler på en solpanel inte orsakade någon betydande effektminskning rekommenderas att de solpaneler som undersökts installeras på så vis att slingorna ligger vertikalt och därför löper lägre risk att flera slingor skuggas samtidigt, då de flesta naturligt förekommande skuggor är vertikala.
This bachelor's thesis examines how to use solar panels in the most optimal way in order to produce the largest possible amount of energy and to generate the highest possible revenue. This is done by comparing sun tracking and stationary solar panels. Whether geographical location has an impact on the effect of sun tracking has also been examined. ▼ I detta arbete har olika uppvärmningssystem för en samfällighetsförening jämförts ekonomiskt och miljömässigt. Den ekonomiska jämförelsen har gjorts ur ett livscykelkostnadsperspektiv mellan fjärrvärme och olika lösningar med värmepumpar. De miljömässiga aspekterna jämfördes genom att undersöka utsläppen under drift utifrån synsätten ursprungsmärkt el och medelel samt genom primärenergianvändningen. Arbetet är utfört på uppdrag av Vargskinnets samfällighetsförening i Mariedal, Umeå. Samfällighetsföreningen består av 128 st kedjehus som idag får sin uppvärmning från fjärrvärme. För arbetet har två stycken alternativ med värmepumpar jämförts med uppvärmning av enbart fjärrvärme. Ena alternativet bestod av fem bergvärmepumpar på totalt 400 kW som stod för baslasten av uppvärmingen och fjärrvärme användes som spetslast samt för att värma varmvatten. Det andra alternativet bestod av tio bergvärmepumpar och en total effekt på 800 kW där pumparna användes som baslast för uppvärming samt varmvattenberedning och el användes som spetslast när värmepumparna inte räckte till. Alternativen jämfördes ekonomiskt genom beräkna LCC (Life Cycle Cost) för alla alternativ. Resultaten visade att alternativet med tio värmepumpar var det mest lönsamma alternativet som gav en besparing på ca. 7,3 milj kr. Även miljömässigt visade sig lösningarna med bergvärmepumpar vara bra då de gav reducerade utsläpp jämfört med enbart fjärrvärme. Jämförelse av primärenergianvändningen gav inga konkreta resultat vad som var bäst. Det beror på hur primärenergi för vissa bränsle som t.ex. avfall och restprodukter tas i beaktning för vilket alternativ som är bäst.

▼ Within this thesis, an experimental and numerical study was performed on cooling of a 5x5 in-line tube bank placed within a duct using impinging jets. The Reynolds numbers investigated using the main inlet as reference were Re~2300 and Re~4500. The Reynolds number corresponding to the impinging jets was Re~147000. The aim of the study was to replicate the thermal conditions in an industrial tunnel kiln used for production of cylindrical objects. As the current cooling was fairly unknown due to difficulties in conducting proper measurements a miniature tunnel oven model had been built. The experimental part of the thesis was done on said miniature tunnel oven model which was at the time located at Gävle University (HiG).Prior to collecting the cooling data, an extensive groundwork was performed e.g. leakage test, jet and inlet velocity studies. The velocity measurements were conducted using a hot-wire anemometer. The simulation part was conducted using computational fluid dynamics simulations (CFD). A pre-study was performed in order to study the effect of using different settings in the CFD-setup. The study resulted in the use of steady RANS together with k – ω SST as turbulence model. First order schemes were used except for the energy equation which used second order. A mesh independence study was performed and showed a better agreement to experiments with the increase in mesh density. The experimental and numerical results showed good resemblance to each other for both the temperature and the heat transfer coefficient of the cylinders. The average deviation of the simulations to the experiments were 8.3% and 11.0% for the cylinder temperature and heat transfer coefficient respectively. By studying the obtained temperature and heat transfer coefficient contours obtained through ANSYS a more evenly distributed cooling was obtained by placing the impinging jets between cylinders compared to directly facing cylinders in a cylinder package. This was also apparent by observing the obtained results from the experimental study.

▼ Today, the great importance and benefits of renewable energies as a source of endless energy is obvious for all. Wind is recognized as one of the most stable and safest type of energy, due to ease of access as well as applying modern technical and scientific methods in order to its extraction. In this regard, much effort has been done in the developed societies to obtain knowledge besides getting access to new techniques in the exploitation of this unlimited wealth. Apart from the new aspects of the proposed research in wind area, the extraction operation requires specialists to advanced techniques and scientific research. The development of societies and their increasing necessity to energy resources have increased the importance of safe and clean renewable energy. This study investigates a technique to specify the power performance of the wind turbine directly from measured data which fluctuate with high frequency. This project is a review of a dynamical method for the specification of wind turbines' power curves. Considering the power output of a wind turbine in this study, the basic concept is to divide its dynamics into two components; a deterministic(relaxation) and a stochastic(noise) functions which are equivalent to the wind turbines' real behavior itself and the exterior wind turbulence. It specifically presents a procedure to estimate the reaction of the wind turbine as a machine to the wind speed dynamically. In this method, reconstruction of the coefficients from the measured data and extraction of the specification of the power output have been done. The main focus of this technique is on differential equations which are recognized as Langevin equations. As the consequence, it is shown; with this method we will be able to percept the conversion dynamics of wind turbines and get the power curves' results with high precision. The results demonstrate that power performance's specification is accurately reconstructed from the measured data by the quick estimation of the coefficients from data. Furthermore, the high accuracy and fast estimation of the power curves would be considered as preferences in this method.

▼ Every life on the earth is addicted of the sun. The sun is clean and free energy source. In Sweden there is a long term goal for the global energy system with 100% renewable energy. To achieve this goal we need more efforts in a form of including solar cells. Solar cells has existed a long time on the markets, but in the recent years it has been more interesting in the world and it is mainly because the price has gone down, the quality has been better, the efficiency has been higher. Nowadays people are more interested to do something that is environmentally friendly and profitable. Because of the solar cells are applying good on the roofs and facades so the property companies have been more interested to place solar cells on their buildings. My project is about potential electricity generation for photovoltaic systems at the new library roof that will be built in Falkenberg. In my work I explain what a solar cell is, how it works, how many types are there and what kind of it is the most common, how solar systems work, how it is installed, what it takes to install solar cells, and what it provides for power. After I have tested different angles as solar modules are directed against, comparisons and calculations, the results of the design have shown that the roof of the library has good opportunities for mounting solar cells installations. The best angle was 27◦ to the south with azimuth 185◦. The conclusion of the work is that it is profitable to invest solar systems at the library's roofs. Repayment time is long but it is worth it, in this way Falkenberg’s government also makes an effort for the environment.

▼ This master thesis examine how a low temperature radiator systemcan be implemented in a new built office and what effects this will have on the return temperature. One point in the system was logged and data was collected. A model was then developed in VIP-Energy to determine the heating demand for an office building which were compared to the supply. A cost analysis was also performed on different types of low temperature radiator systems. These were compared to a conventional radiator system with a supply temperature of 55°C and a return temperature of 45°C. A cost analysis was also done on whether to build energy efficient or not. The study shows a strong correlation between the heat demand and the time of day. The demand is low during office hours and high during nights and weekends with a peak demand of 70 kW. The low demand is due to the high amount of process energy an office uses. The point in the system can supply the heat demand during almost every hour of the year. For the few hours where there is a mismatch between supplied heat and demand, a shunt solution can supply the return water with primary heat. If the heat demand is scaled up with ten or twenty identical houses the point will be unable to supply enough power to cover the heat demand for more hours a year. The most cost-effective radiator system is Purmo Belize with a supply temperature of 40°C and a return temperature of 30°C. Purmo Belize has built in fans that can improve the heat supply to the room with up to 80 %. Compared to a conventional radiator the payback time is 9 years, with a return on investment of 12,8 percent and a net present value of 151 762 kr. A 40/30°C-system will lower the return temperature in the measured point with 0,4°C. For the whole system this means a reduced temperature of 0,00003°C if the total flow is 50 m3/s and the average return temperature is 50°C. From a strictly economic point of view, an extra energy efficient house will be beneficial if the extra cost is up to 5 000 000 kr or around 700 kr/m2 with a depreciation time of 25 years.

▼ Sammanfattning Syftet med denna studie är att i åtta scenarier konkretisera hur Gotland skulle kunna ställa om till en förnybar energiförsörjning. Detta ska visa vägen för hela Sveriges omställning till förnybar energi 2040. Studien ska tjäna som en första orientering av vad fortsatt forskning kan inriktas på. Metoden var främst litteraturstudie samt modellering och beräkningar utifrån representativa exempel. Bedöm- ning av alternativ gjordes utifrån de övergripande kriterierna hållbarhet, resurseffektivitet och realis- tisk potential. Som begränsning utgick studien från åtta scenarion med olika förutsättningar och olika fokus. Tidsramen var fram till 2030. Scenario 1 - Transport: I scenario 1 var fokus att göra transportsektorn förnybar. Biogas och el från vind- kraft ansågs vara de energikällor som bäst ersätter de fossila bränslena. Import av biodiesel bedömdes även nödvändig, framför allt till tung transport. Utmaningen ligger främst i den omfattande omställ- ningen som krävs av fordonsflottan. Scenario 2 - Industri: I scenario 2 fokuserades endast på industrins omställning till förnybar energi. Framför allt cementproducenten Cementa använder en stor andel av Gotlands energi. Alternativet med störst potential, och som bör prioriteras för fortsatta studier, ansågs vara att att elektrifiera Ce- menta. Scenario 3 - Bioenergi: I scenario 3 skulle bioenergi användas för att ersätta fossila bränslen, samtidigt som Gotland var självförsörjande på livsmedel. Industrin bortsågs ifrån. De två intressena visade sig vara förenliga. Scenario 4, 5 och 6 - Reglering: Scenario 4, 5 och 6 fokuserar alla på olika typer av energilagring och reglering. Detta är nödvändigt i ett energisystem som till stor del bygger på vindkraft och solenergi. Batteriparker, tryckluft, pumpkraft och vätgas studerades som möjliga lagringsmetoder. Främst bat- terier i kombination med vätgas ansågs ha potential på Gotland. Fortsatt breda studier krävs dock. Scenario 7 - Ingen kabel: Idag finns en kabel mellan Gotland och fastlandet för import och export av elektricitet. I scenario 7 kan den kabeln inte användas. Stor utbyggnad av vindkraften krävs då, spe- ciellt havsbaserad. För att lättare reglera energin föreslogs att Gotland delas in i mindre system. Scenario 8 - Energiplan 2020: Region Gotland har satt upp mål för energisystemet år 2020 i Energiplan 2020. I scenario 8 studerades hur energisystemet skulle kunna se ut om målen uppfylldes. Stora för- ändringar från dagens energisystem skulle krävas. Slutsatsen av studien var att fortsatta studier främst ska riktas mot möjliga lagringstekniker, indu- strins energiförsörjning samt samhällets inställning till en energiomställning. ▼ With the increasing amount of buildings that are being renovated in Austria, the potential of replacing conventional heating systems with heat pumps increases and thus CO2 emissions could be reduced. Several companies therefore focus on installing combined heat pump and PV systems. The installation of heat pumps and PV systems are being subsidized in Austria with different schemes for every state. The subsidy programs could therefore be clearer and more constant, like the Swedish heat pump subsidies of the last decades. Heat pumps currently cover the heating of over 10% of the gross floor area of single-family houses in Austria. For multifamily houses less than 5% of the gross floor area is heated with heat pumps. The research goal has been to analyze the sensitivity of the net present value (NPV), benefit cost ratio (BCR) and internal rate of return (IRR) on different input parameters for the replacement of a conventional heating system in a multifamily house, by a heat pump combined with a PV system. This way it could be researched what parameters would have most influence on the profitability of a combined heat pump and PV system. A case study has therefore been performed on the replacement of a gas heating system by an ambient air/water heat pump and a borehole ground source heat pump combined with a PV system in a multifamily house in Vienna. A model has been developed with Excel to perform this analysis uses the building space heating demand generated from a simulation tool created internally by AIT: The Building Model Generator. The model calculates the annual energy demand of a multifamily building in Vienna, which leads to the annual costs and benefits with respect to the conventional gas heating system. This model has been validated by a model created with the Polysun software. The results of the analysis showed that installing a combined heat pump and PV system to replace a gas heating system in a multifamily house would improve the NPV in comparison to installing the heat pump or PV system separately. The BCR is greater than one for both the combined air/water heat pump and PV system (AW HP+PV) and the combined ground source heat pump and PV system (GS HP+PV) for the currently used input. Subsidies currently have a large influence on the NPV and payback time of the installment of these combined systems, especially for the GS HP+PV due to the high investment subsidies for this type of heat pump in Vienna. The sensitivity analysis shows that the bigger the PV area of these combined systems, the higher the BCR, but this BCR increase flattens out for increasing PV areas. The investment costs have a large influence: if these would decrease somehow by 50%, the BCR would double. The large influence of the investment costs is shown by the sensitivity analysis on the assumptions for the heat pump investment costs as well.
