▼ The dissertation focuses on the study of rotation-powered pulsars, the primary observational manifestation of neutron stars. These objects are powerful sources of electromagnetic radiation and relativistic particles whose emission is provided by the loss of pulsar rotational energy. Understanding the evolution of pulsars, which happens over billion year timescales, requires detection and study of pulsars at different stages of evolution. I present detailed X-ray analyses of pulsars at four distinct stages of evolution and compare their emission behavior with that of other pulsars expected to be in similar evolutionary stages. I also show key characteristics of the pulsars that make them unique in their group. I start with a young and energetic pulsar, PSR J2022+3842 (characteristic age approximately 9 kyr, spin-down power = 3E37 erg/s), with powerful non-thermal emission. X-ray timing of the pulsar revealed double-peaked X-ray profile with a period twice the previously established value. Our analysis allowed us to update the pulsar's spin-down power and X-ray efficiency using the correct timing results, which brought the pulsar more in-line with other young X-ray pulsars. I also provide the phase-dependent behavior of the pulsar's non-thermal emission. Pulsars with true ages, often substituted by characteristic age, below ~ 100 kyr are considered young and ones with ages > 1 Myr are considered old, with the ‘middle-aged' pulsars in the middle. My next pulsar is a 1.8 Myr old J1836+5925 (spin-down power = 1E34 erg/s), which is perhaps the brightest X-ray source among the oldest pulsars still observable in the gamma-rays. Detailed timing and spectral analyses show strong evidence of an absorption feature (perhaps an electron cyclotron line) in the pulsar's spectrum. Characterizing its thermal emission might have important implications for the neutron star cooling models. Moving another two orders of magnitude up in characteristic age, we have one of the oldest known non-recycled X-ray pulsars, PSR J0108-3430, with characteristic age = 166 Myr and spin-down power = 5.8E30 erg/s. The pulsar's spectrum likely consists of a thermal component, emitted from a hot polar cap, and a non-thermal component, emitted from its magnetosphere. The X-ray pulse profile shows a single, asymmetric peak which could be explained by an axially-asymmetric temperature distribution at the pole or by the non-thermal emission from the outer gap. The three pulsars represent important stages in the evolutionary path that a hypothetical single young pulsar like J2022+3842 might take, as it passes through stages close to gamma-ray emission turn-off (like J1836+5925) and X-ray turn-off (similar to J0108-3430). Pulsars in binaries can follow an alternative path. By accreting matter from their companions they can be ‘recycled’ to short millisecond periods and emit X-rays and gamma-rays for billions of years. ▼ Most of the matter around us today is made up of protons and neutrons, but in the first few moments of the universe the temperature and density were too high for tightly bound protons and neutrons to form. Instead of being bound inside protons and neutrons, quarks and gluons existed in a plasma-like fluid called the Quark Gluon Plasma (QGP). As the universe cooled and expanded, the matter that we have today began to form. An understanding of nuclear matter and the transition from QGP to normal matter (and vice versa) can in principle be ascertained from the fundamental theory of the strong interaction, Quantum Chromodynamics (QCD). In practice though, the current state-of-the-art calculations provide only limited information about the properties of QCD matter. The transition from normal matter to QGP can be studied in the laboratory using relativistic heavy-ion collisions like those produced by the Relativistic Heavy-Ion Collider (RHIC) at Brookhaven National Laboratory. Studying the QGP through heavy-ion collisions has its challenges though, since the created matter evolves through many stages before the final state particles can be detected. Learning about the earliest stages of the system requires penetrating probes, capable of carrying information from inside the medium out to the final state. Electromagnetic probes, such as leptons, are inert to the strong force. For this reason, they carry pristine information from all stages of the created medium. Dileptons (l+l-) are even more valuable, since the various production mechanisms and time periods of the system can be distinguished through the invariant mass of the pair. For instance, the suppression in production of heavy quark (charm and bottom) bound states, which can be identified through dileptons, has long been considered a direct probe of the QGP. At lower masses dileptons can be used to measure the spectrum of thermal radiation of the medium, acting as a "fireball thermometer". Dileptons are also linked to the phenomena of spontaneous chiral symmetry breaking (and its expected restoration inside the QGP) through the rho-meson which decays into dileptons. In this thesis, the first measurements of the dilepton invariant mass spectra through the dimuon (mu+mu-) channel with the Solenoidal Tracker at RHIC (STAR) are presented. The mu+mu- invariant mass spectra is measured in data from p+p collisions at sqrt(s) = 200 GeV and p+Au collisions at sqrt(sNN) = 200 GeV. The first measurement of the phi -> mu+mu- spectra at STAR is also measured in p+p collisions at sqrt(s) = 200 GeV. For these analyses novel muon identification techniques were developed to combat the contamination from hadrons and secondary muons resulting from weak decays. Techniques are presented for training and employing deep neural networks for the identification of muons and for the rejection of backgrounds. Data-driven techniques are presented for the measurement of muon-purity and for the estimation of physical backgrounds to the mu+mu- invariant mass spectra. ▼ This thesis presents my work characterising star formation in Gould Belt molecular clouds using submillimetre observations from SCUBA-2 on the James Clerk Maxwell Telescope (JCMT). I use these observations alongside data from previously published surveys using instruments including the Spitzer Space Telescope. I investigate the effect of including submillimetre data on the numbers, classifications and lifetimes of Young Stellar Objects (YSOs) in Gould Belt molecular clouds, particularly protostars. Following a literature review, I use SCUBA-2 450 and 850 μm observations to characterise star formation in the Lupus I molecular cloud. A total of eleven previously identified YSOs are detected with SCUBA-2, as well as eleven starless cores. Two cores have masses greater than the Jeans mass, and one has a virial parameter of 1.1 0.4, meaning these cores could be unstable against collapse. I use submillimetre emission to calculate disk masses, and find that one YSO has a disk mass greater than the minimum mass solar nebula. I find that Lupus I has a high percentage of both protostars and Very Low Luminosity Objects (VeLLOs). I also fit YSO Spectral Energy Distributions (SEDs) with models, allowing protostellar envelope masses and temperatures to be calculated, and interstellar extinction to be constrained for some YSOs. The signs of recent and future star formation support the hypothesis that a shock has triggered a star forming event in Lupus I. I also use SCUBA-2 data in conjunction with archival Spitzer and Herschel data to produce SEDs for five new candidate First Hydrostatic Cores (FHSCs) in Serpens South. These observations were then fit with models by the first author of this work, Alison Young. This work was able to identify two of the FHSC candidates as probable FHSCs, and constrain the rotation rate and inclination of one of them. I use JCMT Gould Belt Survey (GBS) observations of ten molecular clouds to produce an updated catalogue of protostars in these clouds. I use the FellWalker algorithm to find individual sources in the SCUBA-2 maps, and match them to the Spitzer YSO catalogue of Dunham et al. (2015). I use bolometric temperature to classify 362 out of 592 candidates as Class 0 or Class I protostars - a factor of two increase compared to the Spitzer catalogue due to improved submillimetre coverage. I find that protostellar lifetimes of 0.59 – 0.89 Myr - approximately 25 % longer than previously estimated. I also calculate protostellar luminosities, envelope masses, and envelope temperatures, and examine the distributions. Finally, I newly identify 19 protostars as VeLLOs, and increase the number of known VeLLOs in these clouds by a factor of two.

▼ Solar energy generation arises as a result of direct conversion of sunlight into electricity a by solar cell; which is mainly made up of a semiconducting material incorporated into a system. It is emerging as one of the most reliable and cost efficient renewable energy sources. Within the solar field, organic bulk heterojunction photovoltaic cells have proved of being able to have a great impact in the future years; mainly due to the easy processability of the active layer and substrate, their cost effectiveness and above all, a good power conversion efficiency associated to the close 3-dimensional interpenetrating network that is generated from blending donor and acceptor semiconducting materials together in a bulk heterojunction active layer. In this research work, we therefore report on the study of a newly developed organic bulk heterojunction active layer based on a blend of a star-copolymer generation 1 poly(propylenethiophenoimine)-co-poly(ethylenedioxythiophene) (G1PPT-co-PEDOT) as donor material with N,N-diisopropylnaphthalene diimide (NDI) as acceptor material. Both materials were chemically synthesized. The synthesis of G1PPT-co-PEDOT started first by the functionalization of generation 1 poly(propyleneimine) tetramine, G1PPI into G1PPT by condensation reaction in the presence of 2-thiophene carboxaldehyde under Nitrogen gas followed by the copolymerization of G1PPT with ethylene dioxythiophene (EDOT) monomer in the presence of ammonium persulfate, (NH4)2S2O8 as oxidant. On the other hand, NDI was also synthesized via condensation reaction of 1,4,5,8-naphthalene tetracarboxylic dianhydride in the presence of two (2) equivalences of N,N-diisopropylamine at 110 °C overnight in DMF. Both materials were characterized using FT-IR, UV-Vis spectroscopy, Fluorescence spectroscopy, Voltammetry, HRSEM microscopy and XRD. Based on the cyclic voltammetry and UV-Vis results, we were able to calculate the HOMO, LUMO and band gap energy (Eg) values of both the donor and acceptor to be -4.03 eV, -6.287 eV and 2.25 eV for iii the donor G1PPT-co-PEDOT respectively and -4.302 eV, -7.572 eV and 3.27 eV for the acceptor respectively. From these results, the energy diagram for both donor and acceptor was drawn and it comes out that the separation between the HOMO of the donor and the LUMO of the acceptor ΔEg = 1.985 eV, the ideal value for a good donor-acceptor combination. Le fond diffus infrarouge (CIB) provient de l'émission IR cumulée des galaxies sur toute l'histoire de l'Univers. Ainsi, le CIB sonde la formation et l'évolution des galaxies sur une grande gamme de décalage vers le rouge. Dans cette thèse, nous utilisons les anisotropies du CIB pour: i) Mesurer l'histoire de la formation des étoiles de l'Univers et le biais effectif des halos de matière noire hébergeant les galaxies CIB jusqu'à un décalage rouge élevé. En utilisant ces mesures, nous calculons la masse typique de ces halos de matière noire, sur une grande gamme de décalage vers le rouge. ii) En utilisant le CIB comme traceur de la structure à grande échelle, la corrélation croisée avec le CMB fournit une sonde alternative de l'énergie noire. Nous montrons que le CIB, extrait sur une grande fraction du ciel, peut fournir la meilleure mesure de l'effet ISW. En utilisant un formalisme matriciel de Fisher, nous prédisons l'amélioration des contraintes sur les paramètres cosmologiques en utilisant l'ISW mesuré avec le CIB. iii) Mesurer le spectre de puissance de l'effet Sunyaev-Zel'dovich cinétique (kSZ) caché dans les données du CMB. Nous améliorons les analyses existantes en combinant les mesures du CIB (de Planck/HFI et Herschel/SPIRE) et les observations de Planck, SPT et ACT pour étendre la gamme des échelles spatiales et des fréquences afin de faciliter la mesure du kSZ. The CIB is the cumulative infrared emission from all the galaxies throughout cosmic history. Its distinct frequency-redshift dependence allows to probe a large span of redshifts. In this thesis, we utilise the CIB anisotropies detected by the Planck satellite to:i) Measure the star formation history of the Universe and the effective bias of the dark matter halos hosting the CIB galaxies to a high redshift. Using these measurements, we calculate the typical mass of the host dark matter halos for the CIB galaxies at different times.ii) Using the CIB as a tracer of the large scale structure, the cross-correlation with the CMB provides with an alternative probe of the dark energy. We showed that the CIB, extracted on a large fraction of the sky, may provide the best Integrated Sachs Wolf measurement (in terms of S/N ratio). Using a Fisher matrix formalism, we also predict the improvement on the constraints on the cosmological parameters using the ISW measured with this technique. We cross-correlate the best available maps of the CIB and the CMB and find that the dust residuals in the CIB maps are too high to detect the ISW through this method.iii) Measure the kinetic Sunyaev-Zel'dovich (kSZ) power spectrum hidden in the CMB power spectrum. ▼ Engineers use the product design process is to create new products. This process begins with a problem statement and conceptual design and concludes with the embodiment design phase, where the details of the product are formed and final designs are created. There are efforts being made to increase awareness of the impact of the decisions made in this process with respect to the environment. Currently, environmental design is done in the embodiment phase, far into the design process and after a concept is selected. This paper focuses on a method to consider environmental design during concept generation. This research will show how environmental products can be incorporated into the TRIZ database (in English, TIPS - Theory of Inventive Problem Solving). TRIZ is an organized and advanced form of design by analogy and is based on overcoming contradictions between a set of engineering parameters. TRIZ provides innovative principles that are linked to a repository of patents and products. The fundamental research question for the basis of this work is: Can the TRIZ method be expanded for the design team that places high value on environmentally benign designs? This can be broken down into more specific questions. Question One: How do you find products to expand the TRIZ database specifically so that it can be more useful for environmentally benign design changes? Question Two: How can function structures be used to catalog environmental innovations and aid in applying TRIZ principles? This work will demonstrate how this expansion of TRIZ can be accomplished and will yield three unique contributions. There are three contributions to this work. Contribution One is the analysis of the relative frequency of TRIZ principles for combinations of engineering characteristics within the TRIZ contradiction matrix. Contribution Two is the use of function models, according to the function basis to characterize technical performance contradictions in terms of TRIZ engineering characteristics and to identify environmental innovations in existing designs. Contribution Three is providing support for the validity of expanding the TRIZ database using certified green products and functional modeling. This will be demonstrated by examining electrical energy saving household appliances, and detailing the process by which they can be added to the TRIZ database. ▼ The vast and rich body of literature covering the numerical modelling of hydrodynamic floating body systems has demonstrated their great power and versatility when applied to offshore marine energy systems. It is possible to model almost any type of physical phenomenon which could be expected within such a system, however, limitations of computing power continue to restrict the usage of the most comprehensive models to very narrow and focused design applications. Despite the continued evolution of parallel computing, one major issue that users of computational tools invariably face is how to simplify their modelled systems in order to achieve practically the necessary computations, whilst capturing enough of the pertinent physics, with great enough ‘resolution’, to give robust results. The challenge is, in particular, to accurately deliver a complete spectrum of results, that account for all of the anticipated sea conditions and allow for the optimisation of different control scenarios. This thesis examines the uncertainty associated with the effects of viscosity and nonlinear behaviour on a small scale model of an oscillating system. There are a wide range of Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) methods which capture viscous effects. In general however, the oscillating, six degree-of-freedom floating body problem is best approached using a linear potential flow based Boundary Element Method (BEM), as the time taken to process an equivalent model will differ by several orders of magnitude. For modelling control scenarios and investigating the effects of different sea states, CFD is highly impractical. As potential flows are inviscid by definition, it is therefore important to know how much of an impact viscosity has on the solution, particularly when different scales are of interest during device development. The first aim was to develop verified and validated solutions for a generic type decaying system. The arrangement studied was adapted from an array tank test experiment which was undertaken in 2013 by an external consortium (Stratigaki et al., 2014). Solutions were delivered for various configurations and gave relatively close approximations of the experimental measurements, with the modelling uncertainties attributed to transient nonlinear effects and to dissipative effects. It was not possible however to discern the independent damping processes. A set of CFD models was then developed in order to investigate the above discrepancies, by numerically capturing the nonlinear effects, and the effects of viscosity. The uncontrolled mechanical effects of the experiment could then be deduced by elimination, using known response patterns from the measurements and derived results from the CFD simulations. The numerical uncertainty however posed a significant challenge, with the outcomes supported by verification evidence, and detailed discussions relating to the model configuration. ▼ The Trapezium Cluster stellar population is studied in detail using near-infrared and optical means in order to probe the clustered mode of low and high mass star formation. We determine fundamental stellar parameters such as the spectral types, ages, masses, extinctions and dust excesses for a significant number of cluster stars. Various techniques are applied to deredden the stars in the color-magnitude diagram and hence compare intrinsic positions with theoretical evolutionary tracks. Through these means, we estimate properties of the low mass stellar population to greater accuracy than has previously been achieved. Near-infrared photometry of Trapezium Cluster stars provides an initial evaluation of the nature of the cluster population. This evaluation is improved upon using optical spectroscopy to measure spectral types of a large number of Trapezium Cluster stars for the first time. We find our sample of Trapezium Cluster stars to have a mean spectral type of mid-K, in agreement with :findings for the low mass stars in the vicinity of, and external to, the central cluster. The stars are dereddened on the color-magnitude diagram using our acquired spectral types. Their intrinsic positions provide the most accurate determination for the cluster age obtained to date, -10/6 yr, confirming the pre-main sequence nature of the population. This age estimate is extended to the infrared cluster population of more than 550 stars revealed by infrared-array images. The K luminosity function for the infrared cluster is used in combination with the cluster age to derive the stellar mass distribution. The slope of the mass function obtained here is found to be comparable with the slopes of field initial mass functions. A mean stellar mass of, -0.9 Mo is estimated for the low mass stars. Our determinations for the masses, ages, and spectral types of Trapezium Cluster stars shows that they are a similar stellar population to the more extended Orion Nebula Cluster population, except in density of stars. The mass density of the Trapezium system of low mass and high mass (01 Ori) stars is found to be -4690 Mo pc-3 , approximately 1.5 times greater than previous estimates based on optical studies. The stellar mass derived for the low mass cluster is also used to calculate the star formation efficiency in the region to first order, -72%. This is similar to, but higher than, the star formation efficiencies determined in other regions of embedded cluster formation. The mean extinction estimated for the low mass cluster stars in our sample place the stars at approximately the same depth into the molecular cloud as the Trapezium OB stars, at the near-face of the cloud. Our sample is biased towards optical members of the cluster, suggesting that a significant number of the low mass stars may be embedded more deeply in the molecular cloud than the OB stars. ▼ California adopted the CalGreen building code in 2011, which requires developers to incorporate green features in new commercial buildings to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. The code provides cities the opportunity to require additional features above the minimum standard. However, the literature on green buildings suggests that rent per square foot could differ between markets and submarkets depending on the demand for green buildings. Using the CoStar Professional Property(c) commercial property database, I perform a regression analysis using the log rent per square foot per year as the dependent variable and explanatory variables that control for quality, size, and location. I use LEED and Energy Star buildings to control for green buildings and multiply these variables with the submarket variables to measure the demand for green buildings within each submarket. After controlling for size, quality, and location, I find that tenants are willing to pay a rental premium for Energy Star certified buildings in all submarkets across California, while the rental premium for LEED buildings is not statistically significant. However, I find that certain submarkets within California are willing to pay a rental premium for LEED features, suggesting that there is a difference in demand for green buildings. I find that tenants in cities with residents with more education and higher incomes could be willing to pay more for the non-financial benefits of LEED buildings. In addition, tenants in locations that culturally favor the green features of LEED could be more willing to pay a rental premium. My findings first suggest that each city needs to assess the demand for green buildings before raising the developments standards. Second, cities that have insufficient demand could offer development incentives if the societal benefit of the green features outweigh the costs. Finally, California should align the building standard more closely with energy star, since tenants in California are more willing to pay for energy savings and it would further decrease the greenhouse gas emissions. ▼ The construction industry's two main certifications are Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) and Energy Star. To achieve the triple bottom line of sustainability for these certifications, both certifications should make a positive impact individually as well as mutually, with their impact extending to the surrounding neighborhood. This research examined the spillover effect of LEED and/or Energy Star certified office buildings on the property values of other buildings in their neighborhood in Manhattan, New York City from an economic standpoint. The spatial analysis approach using the Geographic Information System and the statistical analysis approach based on the Hedonic Price Model and the Linear Mixed Effect Model were applied to identify the geographical distribution of LEED and/or Energy Star certified office buildings and their other buildings in their neighborhoods and analyze the impact of the former on the latter. The results were as follows: 1) There was a significant correlation between a LEED and/or Energy Star certified office building and the unit market values of its adjoining buildings through the unit market values of the certified office building, the LEED and/or Energy Star certification achievement, and the major features of LEED certification; 2) There was a varying spillover effect of the certified office building on the median unit market value of buildings depending on their proximities to a LEED and/or Energy Star certified office building. This research provides a firm foundation for further efforts to quantify the spillover effect of LEED and/or Energy Star certification on a neighborhood from an economic standpoint, thus supporting and encouraging growth in the local real estate market and benefitting not only the owners, developers, and investors of the certified office building but also the owners of neighboring buildings. ▼ Re-commissioning, retro-commissioning, Continuous Commissioning® (CC®) are examples of successful systematic processes implemented in buildings to reduce overall building energy consumption, and improve efficiency of systems and their operations and control. The impact of the Continuous Commissioning® Process on the Energy Star® Rating (ESR) of office buildings and hospitals is examined in this thesis. The improvement in performance of a building, and subsequently its ESR, is found to be influenced by its initial ESR, while its location has no impact on improvement. The improvement in ESR is observed to be almost linearly proportional to the percentage of energy saved. For 10% - 20% reductions in energy use typical of the CC® process, the ESR is increased by 10-19 ESR ranks for office buildings and by 13 - 26 ESR ranks for hospitals. The CC® process is found to potentially enable an office building of average initial ESR of 62 and a hospital of average initial ESR of 55, located anywhere in the US, to be eligible to achieve ESR of 75 and consequently the Energy Star recognition. The improvement of ESR is a function of the initial ESR and the building type; hence it is observed to be different for hospitals and office buildings in the study. For hospital and office building models occupying 100,000 ft² of floor area each, a difference of about 30% in the ESR improvement (greater for hospitals) is observed. The energy intensities may be different for buildings with same ESRs that have different location and/or type. An averaged maximum difference of energy intensity of approximately 10% is observed to exist for identical buildings and of the same type but located at different locations. Hospitals are observed to be more than twice as energy intensive as office buildings for the same location and equal ESRs. ESR plotted against % energy savings at site reveals the stepped nature of ESR system. At specific initial ESR and corresponding % savings a reduction of up to approximately 1% for office buildings and up to 1.5% for hospitals does not change the respective ESRs for the model set of buildings in the study. ▼ Στην παρούσα διδακτορική διατριβή, ασχολούµαστε µε ζητήµατα που ανακύπτουν σε ασύρµατα δίκτυα επικοινωνίας, δηλ. δίκτυα που βασίζονται σε τηλεπικοινωνιακή υποδοµή όπως τα κυψελικά δίκτυα κινητής τηλεφωνίας, δίκτυα αυτόνοµων ασύρµατων εκποµπών όπως τα ασύρµατα δίκτυα τύπου ad hoc, κτλ. Τα ασύρµατα δίκτυα επικοινωνίας διαφόρων τύπων έχουν εξελιχθεί σηµαντικά τα τελευταία χρόνια. Ειδικότερα, τα ασύρµατα αδόµητα δίκτυα (ή αλλιώς ασύρµατα δίκτυα τύπου ad hoc) έχουν προσελκύσει το έντονο ενδιαφέρον της επιστηµονικής κοινότητας λόγω των πολλών εφαρµογών που έχουν κυρίως σε περιπτώσεις όπου δεν είναι δυνατή ή επιθυµητή η ολική ή µερική κάλυψη µέσω υποδοµής µε βάση την ενσύρµατη δικτύωση (π.χ., επικοινωνία σε δυσπρόσιτες ή αποµακρυσµένες περιοχές, φυσικές καταστροφές, στρατιωτικές εφαρµογές, κλπ.). ΄Οπως και στα παραδοσιακά ενσύρµατα δίκτυα, σηµαντικό πρόβληµα αποτελεί η εγκαθίδρυση σχηµάτων επικοινωνίας όπως διάδοση (broadcasting, multicasting), επικοινωνία όλων µε όλους (gossiping, all-to-all communication), και επικοινωνία σε οµάδες (group communication). Για την επικοινωνία απαιτείται η κατανάλωση ενέργειας στους κόµβους του δικτύου και, λαµβ.άνοντας υπόψη ότι τα αδόµητα ασύρµατα δίκτυα χρησιµοποιούν κόµβους µε περιορισµένα αποθέµατα ενέργειας, είναι απαραίτητη η ορθολογιστική χρήση αυτής της ενέργειας κατά την επικοινωνία. Αυτό µπορεί να σηµαίνει ότι είναι επιθυµητή είτε η ελαχιστοποίηση της συνολικής ενέργειας που καταναλώνεται στους κόµβους του δικτύου για επικοινωνία ή η ελαχιστοποίηση της µέγιστης ενέργειας ώστε να επιτυγχάνεται όσο το δυνατό µεγαλύτερος χρόνος ζωής όλων των κόµβων του δικτύου. Στη διατριβή εξετάζουµε αλγόριθµους για την εγκαθίδρυση διαφορετικών σχηµάτων επικοινωνίας σε αδόµητα ασύρµατα δίκτυα όπου βασικό κριτήριο για την εκτίµηση της απόδοσής τους θα είναι η κατανάλωση ενέργειας που επιφέρουν στο δίκτυο. Μοντελοποιούµε τα δίκτυα µε ειδικά γραφήµατα και τα αντίστοιχα προβλήµατα επικοινωνίας σαν προβλήµατα συνδυαστικής βελτιστοποίησης στα γραφήµατα αυτά. Τα αποτελέσµατά µας περιλαµβάνουν νέους αλγόριθµους που βελτιώνουν προηγούµενα γνωστά σχετικά αποτελέσµατα και νέα κάτω φράγµατα. Με κεντρικό στόχο την αποδοτική κατανοµή ενέργειας σε ασύρµατα δίκτυα, η µελέτη µας έχει διττό χαρακτήρα: από τη µια πλευρά, ασχολούµαστε µε µελέτη και ανάλυση θεµελιωδών προβληµάτων της Θεωρητικής Επιστήµης των Υπολογιστών (όπως, π.χ., το πρόβληµα Κάλυψης µε Σύνολα). Τέτοια προβλήµατα, και ειδικές περιπτώσεις τους, παρουσιάζουν εξαιρετικό ενδιαφέρον αφού χρησιµοποιούνται (µεταξύ άλλων) συχνά για τη µοντελοποίηση προβληµάτων ενεργειακά αποδοτικής επικοινωνίας σε ασύρµατα δίκτυα. Επιπλέον, προτείνουµε και αναλύουµε νέους αλγόριθµους για συγκεκριµένα σενάρια επικοινωνίας σε σύγχρονα ασύρµατα δίκτυα. Από την άλλη πλευρά, µελετάµε και εκτιµούµε πειραµατικά την απόδοση αρκετών αλγορίθµων και τεχνικών (από τη βιβλιογραφία αλλά και νέων) για ενεργειακά αποδοτική επικοινωνία σε ασύρµατα δίκτυα. Ειδικότερα: Μελετάµε το πρόβληµα κάλυψης µε σύνολα και ενδιαφέρουσες παραλλαγές του. ▼ Among the various end-use sectors, the commercial sector is expected to have the second-largest increase in total primary energy consump¬tion from 2009 to 2035 (5.8 quadrillion Btu) with a growth rate of 1.1% per year, it is the fastest growing end-use sectors. In order to make major gains in reducing U.S. building energy use commercial sector buildings must be improved. Energy benchmarking of buildings gives the facility manager or the building owner a quick evaluation of energy use and the potential for energy savings. It is the process of comparing the energy performance of a building to standards and codes, to a set target performance or to a range of energy performance values of similar buildings in order to help assess opportunities for improvement. Commissioning of buildings is the process of ensuring that systems are designed, installed, functionally tested and capable of being operated and maintained according to the owner's operational needs. It is the first stage in the building upgrade process after it has been assessed using benchmarking tools. The staged approach accounts for the interactions among all the energy flows in a building and produces a systematic method for planning upgrades that increase energy savings. This research compares and analyzes selected benchmarking and retrocommissioning tools to validate their accuracy such that they could be used in the initial audit process of a building. The benchmarking study analyzes the Energy Use Intensities (EUIs) and Ratings assigned by Portfolio Manager and Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) Spreadsheets. The 90.1 Prototype models and Commercial Reference Building model for Large Office building type were used for this comparative analysis. A case-study building from the DOE - funded Energize Phoenix program was also benchmarked for its EUI and rating. The retrocommissioning study was conducted by modeling these prototype models and the case-study building in the Facility Energy Decision System (FEDS) tool to simulate their energy consumption and analyze the retrofits suggested by the tool. The results of the benchmarking study proved that a benchmarking tool could be used as a first step in the audit process, encouraging the building owner to conduct an energy audit and realize the energy savings potential. The retrocommissioning study established the validity of FEDS as an accurate tool to simulate a building for its energy performance using basic inputs and to accurately predict the energy savings achieved by the retrofits recommended on the basis of maximum LCC savings.
