▼ Although previous research indicates a robust association between adverse experiences early in life and later externalizing behaviors such as aggression, violence, and delinquency (Anda et al., 2006; Moylan et al., 2010), less is known about the early childhood environmental antecedents of later callous-unemotional traits. In fact, some studies have indicated that callous-unemotional traits are inherited and relatively impervious to environmental influences (Viding, Blair, Moffitt, & Plomin, 2005; Viding, Jones, Frick, Moffitt, & Plomin, 2008). However, a few studies have found conflicting results, in which some youth who exhibit callous-unemotional traits report more experiences with adversity, such as abuse and violence exposure, although these studies are often cross-sectional in nature and typically rely on retrospective self-report (Kimonis, Fanti, Isoma, & Donoghue, 2013; Kimonis, Frick, Munoz, & Aucoin, 2008). The proposed dissertation research examines the impact of environmental influences – including both risk and promotive factors – on the development of callous-unemotional traits. The research opens with three preliminary studies, two cross-sectional and one longitudinal, and concludes with a project that involves analyzing three large secondary longitudinal datasets. Data for the dissertation research come from: the serious youth violence and long term use of violent media project, funded by the CDC; the Longitudinal Studies on Child Abuse and Neglect (LONGSCAN), funded by the National Center on Child Abuse and Neglect; the National Institute of Child Health and Development’s (NICHD) Study on Early Child Care and Youth Development (SECCYD; The NICHD Early Child Care Research Network, 2005); the Video Game Violence (VGV; Bushman, Huesmann, Boxer, Anderson, & Gentile, 2005) project also funded by NICHD; and the Pathways to Desistance (PTD; Mulvey, 2004; Mulvey, 2011) project initiated by the MacArthur Foundation Research Network on Adolescent Development and Juvenile Justice. I first use the cross-sectional data in the serious youth violence project to establish that youth with callous-unemotional traits and anxiety retrospectively report greater levels of exposure to aggression and violence, and concurrently report greater symptoms of psychopathology and aggressive and violent behavior. I also provide evidence for construct validity of the Inventory of Callous-Unemotional Traits and how best to integrate information from multiple informants. Then, using the LONGSCAN data, I show that adolescents with conduct disorder who lack guilt, a core component of callous-unemotional traits, are more likely to have substantiated reports of maltreatment in childhood. For the final set of studies in this project, I incorporate analyses that take advantage of the longitudinal nature of these data to examine the antecedents to callous-unemotional traits. ▼ This thesis will test the hypothesis that Turkish- Dutch teenagers and Dutch English as a second learner teenagers, code-switch back to their first language, Turkish or Dutch when they are expressing the emotions ‘anger’ and ‘happiness’ in Dutch (second language for the Turkish-Dutch teenagers) or English (second language for the Turkish- Dutch teenagers, but third language for the Turkish- Dutch teenagers). According to scholars like Dewaele and Pavlenko among others, the first language is more encoded in the bilingual’s memory and that the first language feels more vivid and natural to the bilingual participant or the second language learner, therefore they codeswitch back to their first language when they are expressing strong emotions such as ‘anger’(Dewaele 119). However, there are also participants from Pavlenko’s study who claim to express their emotions in their second language, because it is the language of self-control. In order to test the hypothesis, 16 Turkish- Dutch participants and 16 Dutch participants, who varied between the ages twelve till twenty-one, had to fill in a survey, which contains questions about language exposure and language use. The survey also contains indirect questions about social- economic status. After the survey the participants were asked to do a role-play in either Dutch or English. They were randomly given a cartoon, which contains animals who were either best friends or complete strangers to each other, the cartoon had either a good end or unhappy end. The participants were audio-recorded and these audio recordings were transcribed word for word. Later on, they received a qualitrics link to fill in a final survey for a follow up study. The results of the survey, transcribed conversations and the follow up study were analysed on the base of sex, age, and ethnicity. Seventy-two (36 male and 36 female) undergraduates were randomly assigned to either a control or expressive suppression condition, and were asked to watch silent film clips intended to elicit amusement and disgust. While watching each film, participants listened to sixteen nonemotional words. After each film, participants were asked to answer questions about wha t they had seen in the film (visual memory), to recall as many words as they could (auditory recall memory), and to select from a list any words that they had heard during the previous film clip (auditory recognition memory). With regard to the effects of expressive suppression on visual memory, results indicated a 3-way interaction between condition, sex and film emotion: Men performed more poorly than women on the visual memory test after watching both the amusing and disgusting films in the control condition, and when watching the amusing film in the expressive suppression condition. However, men in the expressive suppression condition performed better than women after watching the disgusting film. In terms of the effects of expressive suppression on auditory memory (recognition and recall), a condition x film emotion interaction indicated that there was no difference in auditory memory for the expressive suppression and control conditions when watching the amusing film, but that the expressive suppression group showed poorer auditory memory than the control group for words presented during the disgusting film. Moreover, a ma in effect of sex on auditory memory suggested that men recalled and recognized more words than women across conditions. Taken together, these findings suggest that both sex and the emotional valence of films may influence the effects of expressive suppression on memory. Results will be discussed in the context of previous literature concerning the effects of expressive suppression on cognition.

▼ The idea that we are passive victims of our emotions, that they are wild and uncontrollable things which just happen to (or "in") us is very common. Robert Solomon thinks that this idea stems from a faulty philosophical analysis: the analysis that emotions are a kind of "feeling" or physiological happening. On this analysis, "feelings" and occurrences are externally caused; as such they are non-rational and involuntary, the types of things that we cannot be held responsible for. In his seminal article "Emotions and Choice." Solomon opposes this view. He wants to show that we can be held accountable for our emotions, even praised or blamed for having them. To achieve this end, he shows that emotions are rational events, and hence are importantly conceptual events. Taken to its logical conclusion, Solomon proposes that emotions are judgments. That explains, in a way in which the traditional view can't explain, why emotions are subject to rational control and conscious manipulation, and therefore why we can rightly be held accountable for them. In this thesis I agree with Solomon that the intentionality of emotions cannot be accounted for by a "Components" model. What I don't agree with is that emotions are inferior judgments. If emotions really are a species of judgment (and I see no reason why the reverse might not be true, that judgments are a kind of emotion), then Solomon has given no adequate reason for his implicit view that emotions are inferior judgments. When we look more closely at Soloman's view of judgments, we see that he wobbles between a non-componential and a componential analysis. Since it is his thesis that emotions are importantly non-componential, and that emotions are judgments, this wobbliness jeopardises Soloman's entire philosophical project. After examining the second half of "Emotions and Choice", I conclude that Soloman's strongest reason for thinking emotions are inferior judgments really has nothing to do with the nature of judgments at all. It is because he is covertly, and maybe unwittingly, holding a view of emotions as self-deceptions.

▼ Psychologists have yet to agree on a definition of emotion. Attempts at a classical definition, whereby a concept is defined by a necessary and sufficient set of criterial attributes have not met with success. The purpose of this research, therefore, was to test the feasibility of an alternative to the classical view, namely prototype theory. According to the prototype view, concepts are organized in terms of prototypes, which are the clearest cases or best examples of the category. Category members are nonequivalent and can be ordered in terms of their degree of resemblance to the prototypical cases. Boundaries between categories are therefore ill-defined. In this research, the feasibility of conceptualizing the everyday concept of emotion as structured in terms of prototypes was tested using Rosch's approach. Rosch and her associates have recently demonstrated that many natural language categories such as fruit, furniture, and vehicle can be conceptualized as prototypically organized. Rosch has also demonstrated that many natural language categories are organized hierarchically. For example, the set fruit, apple, Granny Smith apple illustrates a hierarchy with a superordinate, middle, and subordinate level. The first two studies examined the hierarchical structure of emotion categories. In Study One, "emotion" was taken to be the highest, or superordinate level. Subjects were asked to list members of the category emotion. As predicted, prototypical category members like "happiness", "anger", and "sadness", were listed first and with greater frequency than less typical members like "respect", "awe", and "boredom". The purpose of Study Two was to explore the possibility of a subordinate level of the hierarchy. Subjects were asked to list types of emotion categories generated in Study One. It was discovered that unlike the Study One results where all responses were single, words, emotion categories at this level of the hierarchy are not coded monolexemically. Subjects had to "invent" subordinate categories. Consequently there was little agreement in their responses. Internal structure refers to that general class of conceptions of categories in which categories are composed of a core meaning and in which items within the category may be considered differentially representative of the meaning of the category term. In this research, representativeness was operationally defined by means of subjects' ratings of how good each item is as an example of its category. In Study Three, prototypicality ratings were obtained for 20 emotion terms (generated in Study One) as a measure of category representativeness. As predicted, subjects found it meaningful to rate the extent to which each instance was a good example of the category emotion. Moreover, subjects agreed with one another in their responses. L'objectif de ce travail est de préciser le devenu des capacités d'identification, de mémorisation des émotions et d'évaluation de I' intensité des émotions avec l'avancée en âge, mais également lors de la survenue et de l'évolution de la démence de type Alzheimer (DTA). Notre travail s'inscrit dans le cadre des théories cognitives de l'évaluation et des modèles bidimensionnels des émotions prenant en compte la valence et l'intensité. Nous avons réalisé une pré-étude auprès de 42 adultes jeunes âgés de 20,74 ans (*1,75), afin de construire et valider notre matériel expérimental. Outre la valence émotionnelle (positive, négative et neutre), nous avons souhaité évaluer l'impact d'autres facteurs comme le contexte (items isolés versus items en contexte) et le type de présentation des items (verbal versus visuel versus auditif). Notre population d'études est composée de 4 groupes : 20 adultes jeunes âgés de 25,15 ans (i2,74), 20 adultes sains âgés de 74,5 ans (*5,21) [MMS=29,55 (I2,02)], 20 adultes présentant une DTA à un stade léger [MMS=24,2 (12,02)] figés de 77,5 ans (+6,04) et 20 adultes présentant une DTA à un stade modéré [MMS=18 (*1,34)] âgés de 77,85 ans (;t5,69). Nos principaux résultats permettent de retrouver dans le vieillissement cognitif normal et pathologique, la persistance de l'effet booster de la valence émotionnelle sur les capacités d'identification et de mémorisation, malgré la baisse progressive de ces capacités. Nous avons également mis en évidence la présence d'un effet de positivité sur les capacités d'identification et d'un effet de négativité sur les performances de mémorisation dans le vieillissement cognitif normal et qui perdure dans la DTA, quel que soit le degré de sévérité de la pathologie. Ces résultats sont discutés par rapport aux données de la Socioemotional Selectivity Theory de Carstensen (1993). Des pistes de prise en charge sont envisagées afin d'améliorer la qualité de vie des patients souffrant d'une DTA.

The aim of this study was to assess the evolution of the ability to identify, memorise and evaluate intensity of emotions with advancing age, and also after onset and evolution of Alzheimer's-type dementia (ATD). Our work is performed in the framework of cognitive theory on the evaluation of emotions, and bidirnensional modelling of emotions, takmg into account valence and intensity. We performed a preliminary study among 42 adults aged 20.74zt1.75 years, to construct and validate our experimental material. Ego-depletion theory posits that an individuals’ ability to resist temptations is dependent on a limited pool of self-regulatory resources that is expended whenever an individual exerts self-control (Muraven & Baumeister, 2000). While much research has examined how individuals expend resources, little research has examined how individuals can replenish resources in order to resist further temptations (Hagger, Wood, Stiff, & Chatzisarantis, 2010). This dissertation examines whether humor, a phenomenon highly recommended by business consultants as being energizing (Kanter, 2010), can help individuals persist at assigned work tasks and resist the temptation to engage in counterproductive behavior. In addition, the studies in this dissertation also examine one mechanism by which humor increases persistence along with how different types of humor and individual differences in humor style interact to influence its outcomes. Five experimental studies are reported. Study 1 examined the effects of humor and found that those who experienced humor persisted significantly longer than others at an assigned task. In addition, the discrete emotion of amusement mediated the positive relationship between humor and persistence. Study 2 replicated the findings of Study 1 and found that those high in self-enhancing humor style persisted longer when experiencing humor than those low in self-enhancing humor style. Study 3 found that exposure to self-deprecating humor generally results in greater levels of persistence. However, those high in self-defeating humor style did not show any significant increase in persistence when experiencing self-deprecating humor. Studies 4 and 5 examined aggressive humor and found that aggressive humor in general led to a significant increase in persistence. It also found that those low in aggressive humor style did not persist longer at assigned tasks. In addition, those who were high in aggressive humor style who laughed at others were more likely to engage in cheating behavior. ▼ Intuitively, emotion/judgment conflicts are irrational because they are disruptive. They create disturbances and divisions in our generally well-ordered and cohesive selves. When you fear the spider, even though you judge that it isn’t harmful to humans, you may recoil from its frightful appearance. You might also spend your mental and practical resources and devising a safe disposal of the pest with a long broom handle that keeps a comfortable distance between you and it, even though your judgment implies that such precautions aren’t necessary. Unless or until the conflict is resolved, each element of the conflict vies for influence over your thoughts and actions. In this dissertation, I give an account of emotion/judgment conflicts according to which they are conflicts of assent-bearing attitudes. As attitudes, emotions and judgments both entail rational commitments, at a minimum, to refrain from having inconsistent attitudes. Emotion/judgment conflicts violate these commitments. A major objection to this view is that emotions appear to be inconsistently responsive to reasons that support altering or extinguishing it. Some emotions easily change in response to reflection, but some are highly recalcitrant. Therefore, emotions don’t obviously have the sort of relationship to reasons and reflection that our attitudes have. Attitudes are reason responding. In response to this objection, I argue that emotions do generally respond to reflection on our reasons, even in some cases in which they appear to be recalcitrant because they are unmoved by the reasons that formed the basis of our judgment. The modes of reflection that would be able to adjudicate the conflict are just the sorts that our emotional faculties respond to: attention redirection, information elaboration, and imagination. These modes of reflection can correct for hasty and myopic judgments as well as ill-founded emotions by widening our reasons set and recalibrating our weighting schemes. ▼ The purpose of this study was to experimentally investigate the behavioral correlates of emotional reactivity and emotion regulation and their relation to speech (dis)fluency in preschool-age children who do (CWS) and do not (CWNS) stutter during emotion-eliciting laboratory procedures. Participants (18 CWS, 14 boys; 18 CWNS, 14 boys) completed a neutral (“apples and leaves in a transparent box,” ALTB) and a frustrating (“attractive toy in a transparent box,” ATTB) task, both of which were followed by a narrative task. Dependent measures were emotional reactivity (positive affect, negative affect) and emotion regulation (self-speech, off-task) exhibited during the ALTB and the ATTB tasks, and percentage of stuttering-like disfluencies (SLDs) and percentage of other disfluencies (ODs) produced during the narratives. Results indicated that CWS, when compared to CWNS, exhibited more negative emotion and more self-speech. For CWS only, emotion regulation behaviors (i.e., off-task, self-speech) were predictive of stuttering-like disfluencies produced during the subsequent narrative tasks. Furthermore, for CWS there was no relation between emotional processes and other (i.e., non-stuttered) disfluencies, but for CWNS negative affect was related to other disfluencies. Findings from this study provide support for the notion that preschool-age CWS are more emotionally reactive than CWNS and that even though CWS seem to exhibit more self-speech regulatory behaviors than CWNS, these attempts might not be very effective in modulating their emotions. Furthermore, findings indicate that for preschool-age CWS, stuttering-like disfluencies, unlike non-stuttered disfluencies, are influenced by emotion regulatory processes, but results suggest a differential mechanism underlying the production of non-stuttered disfluencies by preschool-age CWS and CWNS. Overall, findings from this study support the notion that emotional processes are associated with childhood stuttering and likely contribute to the difficulties that at least some CWS have establishing normally fluent speech. ▼ This project draws on work in cognitive science to examine the representation of emotions in several works of Germanic literature from an individual-psychological, as opposed to a collective-cultural perspective. The dissertation adopts the view from cognitivist philosophy that what is most essential about emotions is that they are evaluations of information. Theories of artificial intelligence such as Oliver G. Selfridge’s pandemonium model provide a means to conceive of the composite evaluations that are often constitutive of an emotion. This study then traces out structural similarities between the thought processes by which evaluations are reached and the presentational methods of four literary works. This correlation allows these fictions to serve as abstract models for commonly occurring personal and interpersonal situations. Chapter one examines representations in E.T.A. Hoffmann’s Das Fräulein von Scuderi of both an emotion — sympathy — and the phenomenon of intuition. The novella provides evidence that enables a reconstruction of the evaluations that give rise to these mental states in the characters. Chapter two uses The Seducer’s Diary by Søren Kierkegaard to explore infatuation, an emotion whose inception is greatly dependent on particulars of an individual’s personality. A seduction, then, involves setting up echoes of the target’s psychological makeup, which the diary accomplishes through the textual means of the letters embedded in it. Chapter three shows how the text of Adalbert Stifter’s Brigitta reproduces the structure of the mental conditions that cause a person to feel surprised. Finally, chapter four investigates regret, an emotion that occurs when a counterfactual state of affairs persists in an individual’s mental landscape even after all possibility of realizing that state is gone. In Marie von Ebner-Eschenbach’s framed narrative Die Resel, the inner story serves as the counterfactual with which a character in the framing narrative is confronted, thereby textually enacting the mechanism of regret. These works, read in a way that reveals conceptual resonances between narrative structures in the texts and the logical structures underpinning emotions, offer insight into the mechanisms themselves that motivate and guide human beings. ▼ Emotions have been found to convey information that helps individuals make sense of and manipulate their environment. One example that is relevant to the workplace can be seen in feedback interventions. According to the social functional perspective, emotions expressed by the feedback provider are likely to add to a recipient’s understanding of the feedback message. The Emotions as Social Information (EASI) model is consistent with this perspective and states that expressed emotions influence observer behavior through two pathways: performance inferences and affective reactions (e.g. liking of the feedback provider). Recent work with the EASI model suggests that angry feedback can have beneficial effects on performance, and the current study expands these findings by investigating whether technology-mediated communication influences how recipients respond to angry feedback. Drawing on media richness theory, I proposed that angry feedback would be perceived as more intense in richer media and that this would have an indirect effect on individuals’ behavior on subsequent task performance through effect of the two EASI pathways. Participants were assigned to one of three computer—mediated angry feedback conditions (i.e., video, audio, text) in response to a divergent thinking task, then were asked to complete a variation of the same task. Media richness in technology-mediated communication modalities was found to act as a catalyst, where richer media increased the perceived intensity of expressed emotions. In general, these differences in perceived intensity of groups manifested in differences across groups for the EASI mechanisms, in that participants in the richer media conditions reported lower performance inferences and less liking of the feedback provider, as well as greater felt anger and anxiety. However, analyses for the indirect effect of intensity of anger on subsequent performance through the EASI pathways were largely unsupportive. Trending results suggest that liking has a non-linear (inverted-U) effect on originality, such that participants who reported moderate levels of liking generated more original responses to the task. Follow-up exploratory analyses were conducted in an attempt to clarify the findings. Results for these analyses, as well as implications for theory and research are discussed.
