▼ Particle packing is an important subject in scientific research and industrial applications. In the past decades, extensive efforts have been taken on particle packing, but mainly focusing on the packing of spheres.However, the investigations regarding packing of non-spherical particles are limited because of the complexity of the problem, like contact detection, overlap and force calculation. Therefore, recent studies mainly focused on well-defined shapes. Among these well-defined shapes, the ellipsoids are regarded as the first step from spherical to non-spherical particles. More importantly, ellipsoids can represent a wide range of shapes from very platy to elongated, including spheres. Therefore, ellipsoids with a range of aspect ratios are used in both physical experiments and DEM simulations. Through the combination of vibration and so-called batch-wised feeding method, it is expected to obtain local ordered packing structures of mono-sized spheres and ellipsoids, which is obviously important for the further investigation in the field of crystallization of particles. The equivalent packing size, which is defined as an equivalent spherical diameter determined by measuring and relating its size-dependent packing property to the diameter of a sphere, is quite significant in the characterisation of the size of non-spherical particles and can be used to estimate the packing density of packing including non-spherical particles. The investigation about the segregation caused due to particle shape and the underlying mechanism will be beneficial to the process control in many industries including handling particular materials.For the packing of mono-sized ellipsoids, both simulation and experimental results show the strong effects of some key variables on packing properties. Generally, increasing dropping height can increase the packing density, overall mean coordination number, and result in more local ordered packing structures, while increasing deposition intensity, friction coefficient and damping coefficient can decrease the packing density, overall mean coordination number of the packing and cause the decrease of the local ordered packing structures. Furthermore, the analysis regarding the order parameter implies that oblate ellipsoids prefer facing upwards and downwards and the prolate ellipsoids tend to lie flat in the plane normal to the vertical direction based on the analysis of the distributions of angle between OA, which is defined the vector pointing from particle mass centre O to polar apex A of the ellipsoid, and z-axis.The equivalent packing size of ellipsoidal particles was confirmed from microscopic viewpoint based on the similarity between packing systems of spherical and non-spherical particles. And the similarity can be obtained from the analysis on the mean coordination number of each component in a given binary mixture of spheres and ellipsoids. ▼ An alternative to the conventional method for determining impact probability by an asteroid is presented that utilizes the positional uncertainty ellipsoid. This method is used commonly for Earth-orbiting satellite collision probability. In the scaling up process, the gravitational influence of one of the bodies in the collision is taken into account, namely that of the Earth. The restricted three-body problem is sufficient to provide a backdrop for the probability analysis, while making sure to note that the results are only hypothetical given a simplified dynamic model. Uncertainty is represented mathematically by the covariance matrix and is propagated into the future by a linear transformation involving the State Transition Matrix (STM). Encounter regions are defined as regions along the nominal trajectory of the asteroid where the propagated uncertainty encloses the Earth. These regions are not known a priori. Probability is then calculated by a triple integral of the probability density function (pdf) (a function of the covariance matrix) over the volume swept out by the Earth through the encounter region. This integral is achieved by, first, integrating the instantaneous pdf at each time step in the encounter region, and then by integrating the resulting probability, as a function of time, over its domain. The process from propagating the uncertainty along the nominal trajectory, finding the encounter regions and calculating probability is repeated in a Monte Carlo simulation that varies the initial uncertainty. The orientation of the initial uncertainty ellipsoid is held constant: aligned with the velocity vector, while the lengths of the three principal axes (in-track, normal, and out-of-plane) are varied in their respective relative ranges. The trend in probability calculated vs. initial uncertainty is then investigated. It is found that higher probabilities result from initial uncertainties that are tighter in all three directions. That is, higher probabilities result when the position of the asteroid is known initially with more accuracy. This is an expected result because probability should be a conservative estimate so that likely encounters are not overlooked. And with advances in observational and analytical techniques, the initial positions of asteroids will inevitably become more accurate so that more conservative probabilities will be calculated in the future. However, it is also shown that this positive result stems from the uncertainty being very large initially, so that as the uncertainty decreases substantially, the trend will tend to reverse. This fact is not demonstrated because large uncertainties are required for this method to proceed. Suggestions for future work are given to combat these limitations. With this alternative, and the suggestions for improving it, probabilities of impact by an asteroid can be calculated that are comparable to current automated methods. ▼ The purpose of this study was to evaluate the ground effect on the Human Powered Vehicle (HPV) Fairing with different ground clearances, and its effect on drag using Computational Fluids Dynamics (CFD) software. The short term goal of this thesis was to use the CFD software package ANSYS FLUENT, to find how the ground clearance of the 2010 version of the HPV fairing affects the overall drag and to an optimal ground clearance for the vehicle. The long term goal was to create a guide to help future students use ANSYS FLUENT and other ANSYS software to create mesh and CFD studies to find external forces such as drag and lift coefficients on objects moving through a fluid. In order to create a good computational mesh for the HPV fairing flow field, the mesh was first created for standard geometries, i.e. flat plate and oblate ellipsoids. Drag values computed for various meshes were compared to known drag values for those geometries. The results for the flat plate matched within 3.5% of the theoretical results, and for the oblate ellipsoids the difference was less than 5.6% from experimental values. This process helped to optimize the final mesh settings for the HPV fairing and find acceptable results for the drag coefficient with the fairing at different ground clearances. As mentioned previously, a long term goal for this thesis was to create a tutorial on how to use ANSYS and FLUENT to create good CFD studies. The tutorial can be used with future California State University, Northridge (CSUN) senior design teams to create body geometries and effectively to accurate results for drag and lift on various bodies. This tutorial can also help with regard to importing the geometry from CAD software and performing the correct model setup in ANSYS. The study for the HPV was conducted as a function of h/L, where h is the ground clearance and L is the length of the HPV fairing. (L= 99 inches and was constant). The ground clearance ranged from 3 to 18 inches including two baseline tests, at 30 and 297 inches away from the ground. All of the results are provided in terms of the streamlines, pressure and velocity magnitude fields, and vorticity contours. The goal was to see how high the body had to be off the ground to eliminate the drag ground effect. It was found that the fairing had to be at least 18 inches of from ground in order to see a significant reduction in ground effect. Additionally a trade off analysis was conducted on the HPV fairing to balance the speed benefit from high ground clearance with vehicle stability during cornering. However, the height required to minimize the ground effect was impractical for the HPV competition due the Center of Gravity (CG) considerations. Advisors/Committee Members: Ryan, Robert G. ▼ Proper central nervous system (CNS) function in vertebrates and invertebrates alike requires the sufficient production of, and suitable interaction between, different classes of neurons and glial cells. Although a large heterogeneity exists between individual cells of the CNS, one can begin dissecting its construction, and ultimately function, based on developmental principles. One such principle is the lineage concept; accumulating evidence suggests that in the CNS of the fruit fly Drosophila melanogaster, classes of cells can be defined based on their progenitor origin, or lineage. Neurons and/or glial cells which derive from an individual progenitor, of which there are approximately 100 per brain hemisphere, exhibit common structural properties. In this dissertation we describe the lineage relationship, and resultant characteristics, of Drosophila brain cells in two contexts: glial cells populating the neuropil-cortex interface (neuropil glia) and ensembles of neurons transmitting visual information to a higher-order brain region called the central complex (Anterior Visual Pathway). In the first context, we find that astrocyte-like glial cells (ALGs), a neuropil glia subtype reminiscent of vertebrate astrocytes, are generated in two distinct waves. The first wave results from the proliferation of embryonic progenitors in the basal brain, and produces the mature ALGs of the larval brain. ALGs of the adult brain, produced during the second wave, are generated from a completely separate population of progenitors in the larva. We also characterize the cytology of these glial populations. In the second context, we find that all ring neurons of the ellipsoid body, a subcompartment of the central complex, are generated from a single lineage called DALv2. Ring neurons are a peculiar neuronal class which has been previously shown to respond to visual stimuli and are required for higher-order visually-guided behaviors. We identify two further lineages, DALcl1 and 2, which generate parallel ensembles of neurons providing visual input to ring neurons. Importantly, neurons of DALcl1 and 2 are not only developmentally-distinct, but also exhibit structural and functional differences, highlighting the rarely demonstrated principle that functional neuronal circuitry can be mapped to developmental cell lineage. Taken together, this thesis validates the utility of employing the lineage principle to formulate hypotheses of circuit function and nervous system assembly in general.

▼ In this dissertation, we present algorithmic procedures for sum-of-squares based stability analysis and control design for uncertain nonlinear systems. In particular, we consider the case of robust aircraft control design for a hypersonic aircraft model subject to parametric uncertainties in its aerodynamic coefficients. In recent years, Sum-of-Squares (SOS) method has attracted increasing interest as a new approach for stability analysis and controller design of nonlinear dynamic systems. Through the application of SOS method, one can describe a stability analysis or control design problem as a convex optimization problem, which can efficiently be solved using Semidefinite Programming (SDP) solvers. For nominal systems, the SOS method can provide a reliable and fast approach for stability analysis and control design for low-order systems defined over the space of relatively low-degree polynomials. However, The SOS method is not well-suited for control problems relating to uncertain systems, specially those with relatively high number of uncertainties or those with non-affine uncertainty structure. In order to avoid issues relating to the increased complexity of the SOS problems for uncertain system, we present an algorithm that can be used to transform an SOS problem with uncertainties into a LMI problem with uncertainties. A new Probabilistic Ellipsoid Algorithm (PEA) is given to solve the robust LMI problem, which can guarantee the feasibility of a given solution candidate with an a-priori fixed probability of violation and with a fixed confidence level. We also introduce two approaches to approximate the robust region of attraction (RROA) for uncertain nonlinear systems with non-affine dependence on uncertainties. The first approach is based on a combination of PEA and SOS method and searches for a common Lyapunov function, while the second approach is based on the generalized Polynomial Chaos (gPC) expansion theorem combined with the SOS method and searches for parameter-dependent Lyapunov functions. The control design problem is investigated through a case study of a hypersonic aircraft model with parametric uncertainties. Through time-scale decomposition and a series of function approximations, the complexity of the aircraft model is reduced to fall within the capability of SDP solvers. The control design problem is then formulated as a convex problem using the dual of the Lyapunov theorem. A nonlinear robust controller is searched using the combined PEA/SOS method. The response of the uncertain aircraft model is evaluated for two sets of pilot commands. As the simulation results show, the aircraft remains stable under up to 50% uncertainty in aerodynamic coefficients and can follow the pilot commands. Recent development in Graphics Processing Units (GPUs) has enabled inexpensive high-performance computing for general-purpose applications. The K-Nearest Neighbors problem is widely used in applications ranging from classification to gathering of photons in the Photon Mapping algorithm. Using the euclidean distance measure when gathering photons can cause false bleeding of colors between surfaces. Ellipsoidical search boundaries for photon gathering are shown to reduce artifacts due to this false bleeding. Shifted Sorting has been found to yield high performance on GPUs while simultaneously retaining a high approximation rate. This study presents an algorithm for approximatively solving the K-Nearest Neighbors problem modified to use a distance measure creating an ellipsoidical search boundary. The ellipsoidical search boundary is used to alleviate the issue of false bleeding of colors between surfaces in Photon Mapping. The Approximative K-Nearest Neighbors algorithm presented is a modification of the Shifted Sorting algorithm. The algorithm is found to be highly parallelizable and performs to a factor of 86% queries processed per millisecond compared to a reference implementation using spherical search boundaries implied by the euclidean distance. The rate of compression from spherical to ellipsoidical search boundary is appropriately chosen in the range 3.0 to 7.0. The algorithm is found to scale well in respect to increases in both number of data points and number of query points.

Shifted Sorting har visats ge hög prestanda på GPU-er utan att förlora kvalitet av approximationsgrad. Denna rapport undersöker hur den approximativa varianten av K-Nearest Neighborsalgoritmen med Shifted Sorting presterar på GPU-er med avståndsmåttet modifierat sådant att ett ellipsoidiskt sökområde bildas. Algoritmen används för att reduceras problemet av felaktig blanding av färg i Photon Mapping. Algoritmen visas vara mycket parallelliserbar och presterar till en grad av 86% behandlade sökpunkter per millisekund i jämförelse med en referensimplementation som använder sfäriska sökområden. Kompressionsgraden längs sökpunktens ytnormal väljs fördelaktligen till ett värde i intervallet 3,0 till 7,0. Reinforcement Learning (RL) focuses on maximizing the returns (discounted rewards) throughout the episodes, one of the main challenges when using it is that it is inadequate for safety-critical tasks due to the possibility of transitioning into critical states while exploring. Safe Reinforcement Learning (SafeRL) is a subset of RL that focuses on achieving safe exploration during the learning process and, thus, allowing it to be used in safety critical tasks. This research focuses on expanding already existing SafeRL algorithms through a combination of two previously developed safety metrics into a novel one. Furthermore, this research also uses an ellipsoid-based bounding model to replace the interval analysis bounding model. To validate this combination of the metrics, two different examples are used to test the performance of the various algorithms and compare their relative survivability and computational efficiency: a quadrotor navigation task and an elevator control task. Results show that the novel combined metric (ProxOp) outperforms one of the metrics in the quadrotor navigation task and the other one in the elevator control task. Overall, the combined metric is a better option for usage when there is no it{a priori} knowledge on how any of the metrics will behave. The ellipsoidal bounding model is tested using the elevator control task and is shown to have comparable performance when used in combination with the proximity and the ProxOp metrics but shows a significant degradation of performance when used solely with the operative metric. The ellipsoidal bounding model is also preferable for use in tasks where there is no knowledge on what are the bounds of the system model, as the ellipsoidal bounding model estimates the model error initially through the use of Gaussian processes. This research, thus, presents a viable novel safety metric as well as an alternative bounding model that can be used with it for applications of RL where safety is important.

D'un point de vue fondamental, de récentes études numériques et expérimentales, réalisées à grande ellipticité pour compenser l'importance des effets visqueux dans les modèles, semblent en désaccord avec les prédictions théoriques (valides dans la limite asymptotique d'une diffusion négligeable et à faible déformation). De plus, de nombreux effets physiques sont négligés dans les modèles. Par exemple, seules les orbites circulaires ont été considérées. Bien que généralement de faible amplitude, l'excentricité induit une dépendance temporelle dans le forçage orbital, ce qui pourrait générer de nouveaux phénomènes. Enfin, l'existence des instabilités inertielles dans les enveloppes fluides stablement stratifiées en densité, comme les zones radiatives des étoiles chaudes de masse intermédiaire (dont la masse est comprise entre une et huit masses solaires), reste incertaine. La génération de champs magnétiques dynamos dans ces enveloppes stratifiées permettrait de réconcilier les modèles avec les observations astronomiques. Lors de cette thèse, nous nous sommes attachés à rapprocher les modèles (théoriques, numériques ou expérimentaux) des contextes géo et astrophysique. Nous avons combiné les approches théoriques (analyses de stabilité locale et globale) et numériques (simulations non linéaires) afin d'étudier les effets des forc cages mécaniques de rotation dans un ellipsoïde fluide. Nous montrons que la dissipation en volume n'est en fait pas négligeable dans les expériences de laboratoire et les simulations numériques, contrairement aux régimes planétaires et stellaires. Nous montrons aussi que l’excentricité orbitale peut, via la variation temporelle des axes de l’ellipsoïde, générer des instabilités fluides pour dans une gamme de paramètres où elles n’étaient pas attendues. Enfin nous avons étudié la capacité dynamo de l'instabilité de marée, dans les enveloppes stablement stratifiées en densité des étoiles chaudes de masse intermédiaire. Environ 10~% de ces étoiles ont un champ magnétique de surface, dont l’origine reste énigmatique. Nous montrons que l’instabilité de marée peut générer des dynamos de grande échelle dans les enveloppes fluides stablement stratifiées. En particulier, ce mécanisme serait susceptible d’expliquer le champ magnétique de faible intensité des étoiles en rotation rapide similaires à Vega et déformées par un compagnon orbital.

▼ Single Photon Emission Computed Tomography (SPECT) is a non-invasive imaging modality, frequently used in myocardial perfusion imaging. The biggest challenges facing the majority of clinical SPECT systems are low sensitivity, poor resolution, and the relatively high radiation dose to the patient. New generation systems (GE Discovery, DSPECT) dedicated to cardiac imaging improve sensitivity by a factor of 5-8. The purpose of this work is to investigate a new gamma camera design with 21 hemi-ellipsoid detectors each with a pinhole collimator for Cardiac SPECT for further improvement in sensitivity, resolution, imaging time, and radiation dose. To evaluate the resolution of our hemi-ellipsoid system, GATE Monte-Carlo simulations were performed on point-sources, rod-sources, and NCAT phantoms. The purpose of point-source simulation is to obtain operating pinhole diameter by comparing the average FWHM (Full-width-half-maximum) of flat-detector system with curved hemi-ellipsoid detector system. The operating pinhole diameter for the curved hemi-ellipsoid detector was found to be 8.68mm. System resolution is evaluated using reconstructed rod-sources equally spaced within the region of interest. The results were compared with results of GE discovery system available in the literature. The system performance was also evaluated using the mathematical anthropomorphic NCAT (NURBS-based Cardiac Torso) phantom with a full (clinical) dose acquisition (25mCi) for 2 mins and an ultra-low-dose acquisition of 3mCi for 5.44mins. On rod-sources, the average resolution after reconstruction with resolution recovery in the entire region of interest (ROI) for cardiac imaging was 4.44mm, with standard deviation 2.84mm, compared to 6.9mm reported for GE Discovery (Kennedy et al, JNC, 2014). For NCAT studies improved sensitivity allowed a full-dose (25mCi) 2 min acquisition (ELL8.68mmFD) which yielded 3.79M LV counts. This is ~3.35 times higher compared to 1.13M LV counts acquired in 2 mins for clinical full-dose for state-of-the-art DSPECT. The increased sensitivity also allowed an ultra-low dose acquisition protocol (ELL8.68mmULD). This ultra-low-dose protocol yielded ~1.23M LV-counts which was comparable to the full-dose 2min acquisition for DSPECT. The estimated NCAT average FWHM at the LV wall after 12 iterations of the OSEM reconstruction was 4.95mm and 5.66mm around the mid-short-axis slices for ELL8.68mmFD and ELL8.68mmULD respectively.

▼ Transition or escape events are very common in daily life, such as the snap-through of plant leaves and the flipping over of umbrellas on a windy day, the capsize of ships and boats on a rough sea. Some other engineering problems related to escape, such as the collapse of arch bridges subjected to seismic load and moving trucks, and the escape and recapture of the spacecraft, are also widely known. At first glance, these problems seem to be irrelated. However, from the perspective of mechanics, they have the same physical principle which essentially can be considered as the escape from the potential wells. A more specific exemplary representative is a rolling ball on a multi-well surface where the potential energy is from gravity. The purpose of this dissertation is to develop a theoretical-computational framework to understand how a transition event can occur if a certain energy is applied to the system. For a multi-well system, the potential wells are usually connected by saddle points so that the motion between the wells generally occurs around the saddle. Thus, knowing the local behavior around the saddle plays a vital role in understanding the global motion of the nonlinear system. The first topic aims to study the linearized dynamics around the saddle. In this study, an idealized ball rolling on both stationary and rotating surfaces will be used to reveal the dynamics. The effect of the gyroscopic force induced by the rotation of the surface and the energy dissipation will be considered. In the second work, the escape dynamics will be extended to the nonlinear system applied to the snap-through of a buckled beam. Due to the nonlinear behavior existing in the system, it is hard to get the analytical solutions so that numerical algorithms are needed. In this study, a bisection method is developed to search the transition boundary. By using such method, the transition boundary on a specific Poincar'e section is obtained for both the conservative and dissipative systems. Finally, we revisit the escape dynamics in the snap-through buckling from the perspective of the invariant manifold. The treatment for the conservative and dissipative systems is different. In the conservative system, we compute the invariant manifold of a periodic orbit, while in the dissipative system we compute the invariant manifold of a saddle point. The computational process for the conservative system consists of the computation of the periodic orbit and the globalization of the corresponding manifold. In the dissipative system, the invariant manifold can be found by solving a proper boundary-value problem. Based on these algorithms, the nonlinear transition tube and transition ellipsoid in the phase space can be obtained for the conservative and dissipative systems, respectively, which are qualitatively the same as the linearized dynamics. ▼ Momentum and heat exchange between the fluids (air, water…) and suspensions of solid particles plays a critical role in power generation, chemical processing plants, pharmaceuticals, in the environment, and many other applications. One of the key components in momentum exchange are the forces felt by the particles in the suspension due to the flow of the fluid around them and the amount of heat the fluid can transfer to or from the particles. The fluid forces and heat transfer depend on many factors, chief among them being the properties of the fluid (density, viscosity, thermal properties) and the properties of the particles in the suspension (size, shape, density, thermal properties, concentration). This introduces a wide range of parameters that have the potential to affect the way the fluid and particles behave and move. Experimental measurements are very difficult and expensive to conduct in these systems and computational modeling can play a key role in characterization. For accuracy, computational models have to have the correct physical laws encoded in the software. The objective of this thesis is to use very high-fidelity computer models to characterize the forces and heat transfer under different conditions to develop general formulas or correlations which can then be used in less expensive computer models. Three basic particle shapes are considered in this study, a sphere, a disk like cylindrical particles, and particles of ellipsoidal shapes. More specifically, Particle Resolved Simulations of flow through suspensions of ellipsoids with aspect ratio of 2.5, 5, 10 and cylinders with aspect ratio of 0.25 are performed. The Reynolds number range covered is [10, 200] for ellipsoids and [10, 300] for cylinders with solid fraction range of [0.1, 0.3]. New fluid drag force correlations are proposed for the ellipsoid and cylinder suspensions, respectively, and heat transfer behavior is also investigated. Advisors/Committee Members: Tafti, Danesh K. The problem of packing ellipsoids consists in arranging a given collection of ellipsoids within a particular set. The ellipsoids can be freely rotated and translated, and must not overlap each other. A particular case of this problem arises when the ellipsoids are balls. The problem of packing balls has been the subject of intense theoretical and empirical research. In particular, many works have tackled the problem with optimization tools. On the other hand, the problem of packing ellipsoids has received more attention only in the past few years. This problem appears in a large number of practical applications, such as the design of high-density ceramic materials, the formation and growth of crystals, the structure of liquids, crystals and glasses, the flow and compression of granular materials, the thermodynamics of liquid to crystal transition, and, in biological sciences, in the chromosome organization in human cell nuclei. In this work, we deal with the problem of packing ellipsoids within compact sets from an optimization perspective. We introduce continuous and differentiable nonlinear programming models and algorithms for packing ellipsoids in the n-dimensional space. We present two different models for the non-overlapping of ellipsoids. As these models have quadratic numbers of variables and constraints, we also propose an implicit variables models that has a linear number of variables and constraints. We also present models for the inclusion of ellipsoids within half-spaces and ellipsoids. By applying a simple multi-start strategy combined with a clever choice of starting guesses and a nonlinear programming local solver, we present illustrative numerical experiments that show the capabilities of the proposed models.

O problema de empacotamento de elipsoides consiste em arranjar uma dada coleção de elipsoides dentro de um determinado conjunto. Os elipsoides podem ser rotacionados e transladados e não podem se sobrepor. Um caso particular desse problema surge quando os elipsoides são bolas. O problema de empacotamento de bolas tem sido alvo de intensa pesquisa teórica e experimental. Em particular, muitos trabalhos têm abordado esse problema com ferramentas de otimização. O problema de empacotamento de elipsoides, por outro lado, começou a receber mais atenção apenas recentemente. Esse problema aparece em um grande número de aplicações práticas, como o projeto de materiais cerâmicos de alta densidade, na formação e crescimento de cristais, na estrutura de líquidos, cristais e vidros, no fluxo e compressão de materiais granulares e vidros, na termodinâmica e cinética da transição de líquido para cristal e em ciências biológicas, na organização de cromossomos no núcleo de células humanas. ▼ The perceptibility and acceptability of small color differences (ΔE* <5) were investigated using 66 textile-based color difference pairs around a CIE blue color center. Samples were polyester fabrics dyed with disperse dyes under well-controlled dyeing procedures and using precise recipe prediction methods. Each pair was assessed three times by 26 observers in three separate repetitions using gray scale and a total of 5148 assessments were obtained. A standard viewing booth was used with uniform gray surrounding corresponding to L*=74. This resulted in minimizing the crispening effect due to the large lightness difference between the surround and the samples, all of which had an L* value of approximately 35. A third-degree polynomial equation was used to convert gray scale ratings to visual differences (DV). SAS statistical analysis showed over-fitting of data when a fourth-degree polynomial equation is used at 95% confidence level. However, it was shown that a third-degree polynomial fitting was satisfactory. Third-degree polynomial fitting equations were obtained using CIELAB, CIE94(1:1:1), CMC(1:1), and CIEDE2000(1:1:1), respectively, and the results were found to be very similar for all equations. Inter and intra-group variability was assessed using paired t-test and PF⁄3, and the results indicated observer training through repeat assessments. The performance of color difference formulae was evaluated using a correlation coefficient (r) and PF⁄3 at two lightness weights (KL or l) of 1 and 2. Correlation coefficients of 0.91, 0.92 were obtained for CIEDE2000 at KL of 1 and 2, respectively indicating that CIEDE2000 gives the best performance amongst the color difference equations examined. Using PF⁄3, the BFD equation was found to give the best results at both lightness scales giving values of 37.46, and 42.46, respectively. PF⁄3 results also indicate that at KL = 2, CIEDE2000 gives the worst performance amongst equations examined. In addition, results based on correlation coefficient and PF⁄3 evaluation do not match well especially at lightness scale of 2. The optimal KL was also obtained for various color difference formulae using a range of KL values within 0.2-3.0 and with an interval of 0.1. Using PF⁄3 as a metric the best formula performance was obtained when KL or l was set to 0.99, 1.04, 1.21, and 1.33 for CIEDE2000 (KL:KC:KH), BFD(l:c), CMC(l:c), and CIE94(KL:KC:KH) formulae, respectively. The best-fit ellipsoid equation in the CIELAB color space was obtained for the Lee-Shamey Blue dataset developed in this study. This ellipsoid was compared with ellipsoids optimized to the RIT-DuPont dataset. The ellipses based on Lee-Shamey blue dataset have the smallest ratio of axes in the CIE a*b* as well as CIE a*L* and b*L* planes (2.73, 1.16, and 1.58, respectively), with an area of (0.93, 0.45, and 0.78, respectively).
