▼ This dissertation draws on the context of an
elite suburb in order to understand the transmission of privilege and how an
elite space – and its residents – respond to inequality. The suburbs occupy a complicated role in the narrative of U.S. inequality and racial residential segregation. While many of the first suburbs were explicitly upper class retreats, and later government-funded communities for white, middle-class families, today there are many kinds of suburbs – some poor, some rich, some racially heterogeneous, and others not. Urban scholars often ignore the relationship between cities and their surrounding suburbs, and while community scholars provide us with an understanding that “place matters,” few studies investigate this ethos in suburbia. I use ethnographic fieldwork and in-depth interviews to highlight the community of Newton, MA in order to build a greater understanding of U.S. inequality and the transmission of privilege. For the purpose of this dissertation, Newton can be rightfully classified as an
elite suburb given its subjective distinction among residents (e.g. as a “bubble”), as well as its objective characteristics as
elite regarding its typology, scholarship, history, geography, and demography.
Adult residents, the City, and the schools all offer distinct responses to inequality. While these actors position themselves differently towards Newton, I posit that each attempt to whitewash inequality – a disposition towards inequality that attempts to eschew responsibility while simultaneously maintaining a privileged position. Whitewashing inequality is accomplished, in part, through an adherence to the tenets of the diversity ideology – a racial ideology that centers an understanding of race based on the experiences of Whites and their ability to diffuse the meaning of difference. Youth growing up in the “bubble” of Newton, are faced with the task of sorting through the adult responses to inequality in order to find their own sense of self within the community. The task of weighing the pros and cons of the community is most evident in youth response to the question of returning to the community, or not, as adults. Even for those desiring to return, there is a normative sense of first needing to flee the homogeneity of Newton, in order to experience life “outside of the bubble.” In the second empirical chapter I explore in depth the ubiquity of privilege within Newton. Adults and youth define privilege in ambiguous ways that often point to the “super rich” as responsible for perceptions of the community as a wealthy place.
While privilege is defined ambiguously, it most often refers to socioeconomic status, thus avoiding racial privilege and taking for granted educational privilege. The ambiguity and ubiquity of privilege fuel important tensions that reinforce, rather than challenge the community’s privilege. In the second chapter I illustrate the “in but not of” experiences of people of color in Newton, and the “stress culture” students experience around academic achievement. Adults…

The central objective of this work was to study the spread and control of arms at the Mariana in the first three decades of the eighteenth century and the role they are in the process of differentiation of individuals in a society marked by the culture of Ancient Regime. In this sense, we try to understand the principles of action of the crown through the law on weapons, its expression in the colony and the profile of the distribution of weapons among the settlers. The analysis of evidence allowed us to observe that despite the intention by the authorities to control the use of weapons, there was a significant spread of these instruments in relation to the various segments of the population. Noticed a higher concentration of armaments under the power of local elite, so that these actors had better able to provide services for the benefit of the empire, increasing your chances of negotiating with the Crown, in that the metropolis depended on the armed force of individuals to maintain order

In the last couple of decades, research in competitive swimming has given special emphasis to energetic and biomechanical assessment as determinant domains to enhance performance. However, the majority of the studies conducted in this field had a cross-sectional approach, not considering the effect of annual training in the changing process. Thus, the aim of this thesis was to characterize the adaptations in elite swimmers performance, energetic and…

Canárias, Baleares, Córsega, Martinica, Guadalupe, Sicília, Sardenha e Creta) a eles
Sports Level is an indicator which allows a global vision of the sportive development
stage reached by a certain country or region. This indicator expresses the connection
between elite athletes (elite) and common athletes (basis).
The study focused on a descriptive analysis of data. It allowed the comparison between
the Sports Level of five different countries (Portugal, Spain, France, Italy and Greece)
and ten of their regions (Madeira Island, the Azores, Canary Islands, Balearic Islands,
Corsica, Martinique, Guadalupe Island, Sicily, Sardinia and Crete). The focus was on differences and similarities through the analysis of human development indicators and levels of political autonomy of each region concerning their countries’ own capital. This last indicator was measured through an original quantification model.
The study also allowed to establish a connection between the Sports Level of each region and their sportive assessment concerning their results on the “Jeux des Îles” promoted by the COJI (Comité d’Organisation des Jeux des Îles).
Through the use of Spearman Rho’s correlation technique and Wilcoxon Z’s comparison it was possible to associate the results of all the variables.

▼ Elite athletes have been reported to experience higher rates of various psychopathology, with the stress of competing at
elite levels reported to exacerbate existing pathology (Brewer & Petrie, 1996). In particular, athletes have been noted to be susceptible to experiencing anxiety and depression during the transition out of
elite level sport (Lavallee & Robinson, 2007; W. M. Webb, Nasco, Riley, & Headrick, 1998; Wylleman, Alfermann, & Lavallee, 2004), as well as being vulnerable to anxiety and stress during other transitions that they may encounter throughout their careers (Stambulova, Alfermann, Statler, & Cote, 2009). Additionally,
elite athletes have been shown to be at risk in relation to their bodies, with athletes reported to have a higher prevalence of eating disorders, sub-clinical disordered eating (Johnson, Powers, & Dick, 1999; Milligan & Pritchard, 2006; Sundgot- Borgen & Klungland Torstveit, 2004), and the Female Athlete Triad – a combination of disordered
eating, amenorrhea and osteoporosis or osteopenia (Mendelsohn & Warren, 2010; Schtscherbyna, Soares, & de Oliveira, 2009; Yeager, Agostini, Nattiv, & Drinkwater, 1993), than non-athlete
populations, as well as being more susceptible to Social Physique Anxiety (Haase, 2009). Within the sport psychology literature that examines the incidence of psychopathology in
athletes, the theoretical construct of ‘athlete identity’ has frequently been positively associated with athletes’ experiences of distress, including in relation to transition difficulties (e.g., Grove, Lavallee, & Gordon, 1997; Lally, 2007; Lavallee & Robinson, 2007; Lotysz & Short, 2004), and the development of
disordered eating (Jones, Glintmeyer, & McKenzie, 2005; Papathomas & Lavallee, 2006). Thus, within sport psychology athlete identity is considered to be a theoretically and practically important construct for understanding athletes’ experiences (Brewer, 1993; Brewer, Van Raatle, & Linder, 1993). However, within the extant sport psychology literature, identity has typically been conceptualised as athletes’ level of identification with the athlete role and has traditionally been researched via questionnaire methods or content analyses of interview data. Such methodological approaches have been critiqued for being reductionist and overlooking complexity and detail (Finlay & Faulkner, 2003; Locke, 2004; Wilkinson, 2000), while role theory approaches have been criticised for treating identity as stable and unchanging, and located within the individual (Antaki & Widdicombe, 1998b). Thus, rather than treat identity as an inner identification or essence which then guides subsequent action and behaviour, the present research adopts a discursive psychological approach to exploring identity. From this perspective, identity is instead viewed as located within discursive practices and as produced, ascribed and accomplished within language (Antaki & Widdicombe, 1998b; Davies & Harre, 1990; Edley, 2001). The aim of adopting an alternate approach is to build on the existing sport psychology…

▼ This thesis explores the perceptions of retired
elite Canadian Taekwondo athletes regarding their National Sport Organization’s responsibilities for reporting, managing, and preventing athletes’ mental health issues. Using qualitative interviews and a situational analysis of the data, results show that the majority of those interviewed in this study struggled with a mental health issue while competing at an
elite level, and all of the participants reported seeing a teammate struggle, at one time or another, with a mental health issue. Participants in this study identified three major areas in which Taekwondo Canada can help athletes with mental health issues: 1) providing education to coaches and athletes; 2) providing a reporting structure that is independent and confidential, and; 3) providing greater access to sport psychologists on an ongoing basis.

Background: What elite athlete adolescents think and feel about exercise and nutrition is vaguely examined, why there is reason to investigate the experiences and perceptions among these individuals. Purpose: To investigate the thoughts and feelings about exercise and nutrition among a group of elite athlete adolescents. Methods and design: A qualitative descriptive design was used for this study. Through semi-structured interviews with five elite athlete adolescents, data was obtained. A qualitative content analysis was used. Results: Exercise was central in the athletes’ lives. The biggest driving force was the motivation that came from themselves and their team-mates. Injuries, illness and other obstacles affected the athletes negatively. The athletes planned their meals to maximize the performance. The awareness of the importance of nutrition for performance was high, also the knowledge. Both positive and negative feelings were associated with food. The surroundings played an important role for the athletes. Conclusion: The participants of this study were motivated, determined and aware of their training habits and diet. It was hard to listen to the body, especially when injured or sick. More studies, in larger scale, are necessary to gain further knowledge in the field.

▼ <h1>Abstract</h1> In the past, the main focus of migration studies was the investigation of influences of immigrants on the host society and their integration into the country of settlement. However, transnationalism studies currently place much greater emphasis upon the other side – which is the effect of living in diaspora, in the society of origin with trans-border citizenship. The cultural, social and political interactions and connections between Sweden as a country of settlement and Kurdistan (especially Iraqi Kurdistan), create a transnational social space where the members of the Kurdish elite can play a major role in improvement of Kurdistan. From here, their adoption of a double identity makes it possible for them to permanently define and redefine their position in Swedish society while simultaneously participating in the inherent development of Kurdistan. The merging of the members of the Kurdish elite’s discourse in rebuilding of democracy and development with regard to reconstruction, leads to more focus on the role of diaspora and understanding the Swedish Kurdish elite’s impact on “functionalizing” and major contribution in the current state of Kurdistan. The ways of expression, increasing academic value, multicultural behavior, and the elite’s activities in civil society organization in between two or several states, their appearance in the international scene, experiences of living in both host / home societies, and multi-relations in a diasporic context continuing and re-adjusting national identities are essential indications of trans-border identity formation of Kurdish diaspora. After the liberation of Kurdistan (northern Iraq 2003), members of the Kurdish elite experienced transnationalism mainly through transferring their success in performing various activities for their homeland and at the same time integrating more into the host countries that received them. During this research, the researcher met and interviewed a number of members of Kurdish elites who had very interesting stories about the Kurdish diaspora, and more especially the important role they play in the transnational space that connects the Kurdish homeland to many European countries and the United States. Using a phenomenology method, the researcher classifies the elements that can characterize the practices of Kurdish diaspora elite as transnationalism. Sweden is one of the main countries where the Kurdish elite diaspora gathered and are organized to contribute to the development of Kurdistan. Since the Kurdish diaspora is the largest nation that lacks a state, the Kurdish diaspora has formed a long-distance nation in host country.

The primary aims of this thesis were: (i) to examine motivation-related and mental health
variables among elite athletes; (ii) to quantify changes in motivation-related and mental health
variables among elite athletes over time; and, (iii) to investigate the associations between
motivation-related and mental health variables among elite athletes at baseline and over time.
Seven psychometric inventories were administered to 325 athletes across 14 teams in six
sports throughout Ireland: Sport Motivation Scale II; Perceived Motivational Climate in Sport
Questionnaire II; Basic Need Satisfaction in Sport Scale; Profile of Mood States – Brief; Quick
Inventory of Depressive Symptomology – Self Report; Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index; and,
State-Trait Anxiety Inventory – Y2. Data collection continued for the full competitive season.
Based on standard instructional sets for the inventories, motivation, motivational climate and
basic needs satisfaction were assessed quarterly, sleep quality and anxiety symptoms monthly,
and total mood disturbance (TMD) and depressive symptoms weekly.
Overall, the athletes reported adaptive motivational patterns, with scores indicating high
self-determination, perceptions of a task climate, and satisfaction of basic needs. They also
reported low (good) TMD and anxiety symptoms, but elevated depressive symptoms and poor
sleep quality. Results of cross-sectional structural equation modelling (SEM) reinforced
previously supported pathways between motivational climate, basic needs, and motivation.
Additionally, controlled motivation regulations were positively associated with the four mental
health outcomes, while integrated regulation had a negative association with anxiety, and
intrinsic regulation had a positive association with depressive symptoms.
Longitudinal data for both student-athletes and club athletes revealed that motivationrelated
variables were predominantly stable, while mental health outcomes improved over time.
Significant associations between baseline motivation-related variables and later mental health
variables reinforced previous research and some pathways in the SEM. Associations between
baseline mental health variables and later motivation-related variables suggest that these
relationships may be reciprocal, indicating further interconnectedness between these two areas.
The data underscore the complexity of motivation and mental health among athletes, and
highlight the importance of considering the influence of motivation on athlete mental health.
Implications for working with student-athletes and club athletes, and considerations for
psychological monitoring are presented. To this end, the present research reinforces and
extends previous research in sport psychology, providing insights for both researchers and
practitioners.

▼ peer-reviewed
Accurate monitoring of training load (TL) and external loads from athletic and
lifestyle demands has been promoted as essential in defining the relationship
between load, illness and injury risk in athletes (Soligard et al., 2016; Schwellnus et
al., 2016). Furthermore, according to Fry et al., (1991), a multi-faceted monitoring
system should be applied to effectively evaluate training responses and include
physiological, psychological, biochemical and immunological markers. Therefore,
the aim of this research was to develop, implement and evaluate a multi-faceted
athlete monitoring system for Paralympic athletes and determine if this can
effectively identify the responses to training and competition.
Study 1 examined the athletic response to training using sRPE and subjective
wellness measures and the relationship with incidence of injury and illness across
three training seasons in Paralympic footballers. Multi-level analysis identified
increases in measures of weekly TL (11%), training monotony (36%), cumulative
2wk TL (12%), cumulative 3wk TL (8%) and ACWR (29%) to be significantly
associated with illness occurrence in the following week. Specific TL variables have
now been identified which may reduce the number of training days lost to illness
when included in a multi-faceted monitoring system. Despite a 3% increase in TL
measures, none were found to be significantly associated with injury occurrence.
Having examined a field-based team sport, study 2 determined the validity of the
sRPE method for quantifying internal TL in Paralympic swimmers. Significant high
to very high positive correlations were observed between sRPE and Banister’s
TRIMP (r = 0.68, p < 0.01), Edward’s TRIMP (r = 0.66, p < 0.01) and Lucia’s
TRIMP (r = 0.74, p < 0.01) in all four swimmers. Study 3 expanded on study 1 to
increase the number of markers used to include sleep quality, sleep quantity, mood,
energy and muscle soreness and examined the athletic response of Paralympic
swimmers across a 48-week training season. Multi-level analysis identified illness
occurrence was associated with increases in weekly TL (22%), cumulative 2wk TL
(16%) and ACWR (24%) in the preceding week. A 28% increase in training
monotony in the preceding week was observed to be significantly associated with
injury. Finally, Study 4 examined the relationship between TL and salivary
biomarkers IgA, alpha-amylase (AA) and cortisol during training and high-level
competition in Paralympic swimmers. Results identified a dose-response relationship
between TL and salivary biomarkers, thus supporting their use as an objective
measure of internal TL in Paralympic swimmers.
TL variables for Paralympic swimmers and footballers have been identified when
monitored may reduce the number of training days lost to illness. Regarding injury,
this research observed an increase in training monotony of 28% to be significantly
associated with injury amongst Paralympic swimmers, thus should be included in an
athlete monitoring system to…

This work has for objective to comprehend the process of social and political insertion of german families in Santa Maria s society during the Empire and the first moments of Republic, covering a period about 60 years, since the first families of German immigrants had coming to Santa Maria around 1830, until the proclamation of the Constitution Riograndense July 14, 1891 . Through a dialog with the italian micro-history and utilising the metodology called prosopography, we will reconstruct the collective profile of 47 "germans" from Santa Maria s elite, belonging 16 local families, remaking the individual and collectives trajectories of some characters, in a vertical analysis, tracking their strategies for social inclusion, such as family ties and business, networks relationships, the economic activities that they developed and their performances in local politics. In this metodological exercise, we will elaborate a biographical questionnaire, with questions that will be apply in a standardized way for the documentation and bibliography about one each of characters from delimited group, constituting the database to guide our analysis.

elite
notáveis. Alguns dos quais receberam mercês da Coroa, fizeram parte das Ordens Terceiras;
elite Pernambucana setecentista. Aqui defendemos a

The goal of this contribution is to study the construction and the evolution of the elite through the structure of the "cabildo" of Puebla de Los Angeles in New Spain. This city was founded by spaniars settlers in 1531. The elite that was stablished during the very first years is essentially composed by spaniards conquerors. The office of "regidor" is then a royal grace received as a reward for their participation in the conquest war. Very close relationships are established between the different regidores who, quickly, form the same family clan dominated by the Díaz de Vargas and the Villanueva. But as of 1591 and the establishment of the venality process of the offices, the cards are redistributed. New members from other social and economic groups enter the cabildo: the obrajeros and the mercaderes. There follows tensions between the different groups and a recomposition of this elite no longer following military bases but economic, recomposition driven by different family strategies. The composition of this new elite, dominated by the mercaderes, did not lead to the disappearance of the old one. On the contrary, it is necessary for the new power class to acquire the lacking social status. Thus this new group has all the components of the new economic and social elite of the city of Puebla: conquistadores, obrajeros and mercaderes

▼ Despite government’s formation of financial support grants such as the Operational Excellence Programme to provide much needed assistance, South African
elite athletes have not been performing to expectation at recent international championships, such as the Olympic Games. International experiences demonstrate the importance of a well-structured and implemented funding support system to improve
elite athlete performance at international levels. This has led to questions of how to improve this situation for
elite South African athletes who receive funding support from the South Africa Sports Confederation and Olympic Committee and to revisit the implementation of the funding support for
elite athletes. This study will take, experiences of South African
elite athletes as well as sport managers into consideration and will also look at international lessons of experience of the funding support of
elite sport to provide improved options for financial support and
elite athlete development. Using qualitative research methods, this study explored the underlying factors regarding funding support of
elite athletes in South Africa based on experiences and perceptions of
elite athletes. Within the context of the study,
elite athletes would refer to senior track and field athletes and senior swimmers who had been a part of Team South Africa and represented the nation at international competitions. Data was collected in three ways: a) A literature review in the form of an analysis of the high performance policies of: the National Olympic Committee of South Africa and the South African Sports Confederation and Olympic Committee that has governed
elite sport in South Africa post 1994 and the policies that govern high performance funding support within Athletics South Africa and Swimming South Africa; b) interviews with eight preselected
elite athletes to discuss career performances and funding support received and c) interviews with four coaches/managers of the preselected
elite athletes to discuss their perspectives on the funding support their athletes received. Strict ethics considerations were also adhered to insofar as written consent was obtained from all participants beforehand, as the intended interviews would be either audio recorded or video recorded. Pseudonyms were also used for participants with the assurance that participation was voluntary. The eventual findings of the study brought to light that the implementation of the funding support provided by the South African Sports Confederation and Olympic Committee was good in theory but not necessarily so in practice. Overall, participants were grateful for the support received but felt that certain changes needed to be considered going forward for the improvement of future performances.

How does the Chinese Party-State renew its political elite and maintain its cohesion in the post-Mao era? This is a key question in order to understand the evolution of China’s political system and still the explanations one can find in the literature are far from satisfactory. I approach these questions through a unique account of the role played by the Chinese Communist Youth League (CYL) in terms of cadres’ recruitment and promotion since the 1980s. I show that due to post-Cultural Revolution politics and the need for leaders at the time to recruit loyal young cadres, a “sponsored mobility” system was developed to renew the Party-State’s elite. College students are recruited and trained through the Party’s youth organizations. They are put then on a unique promotion path, which includes specific opportunities and trainings, and which leads them to leadership position in the Party-State. In addition, through the various steps of the sponsored mobility process, the young recruits develop a specific social role as future officials and transform their social circles. As a result, they cultivate a political commitment to their career in the Party-State and to the survival of the regime. Finally, the decentralized nature of the Party-State and its youth organizations make it difficult for the young recruits to establish cohesive groups which could organize against the Party-State itself.

▼ The decentralization process in Sierra Leone is hindered by some clear obstacles. The severity of the current economic crisis combined with the local power struggles, due to the decentralization process, is unlikely to favor the institutionalization of the Sierra Leonean state. Political elites, bereft of the means of their patrimonial legitimacy, are engaged in an ever more frantic search for the resources which the informalized politics generates. These resources however are typically delivered by external donors and NGOs. Such re-instigated competition fed by donor programs is apt to bring about a false sense of improved institutionalization. Both traditional and political elites use the reforms currently ushered in Sierra Leone in order to secure both renewed legitimacy and access to the new assets which the masturbatory World Bank and UN (among others) make available but refuse to monitor in order to respect Sierra Leonean sovereignty. This may be called, new sources and new clientele: a local reality only partly affected by the institutional reforms. Neo-patrimonial networks have been able to adapt to the current reforms, not only by redirecting available resources, but also by including new elites such as some councilors and newly installed decentralization mechanisms. Even now, after the first four transition years of the decentralization process in Sierra Leone, there continues to be an inbuilt bias against the institutionalization of the state, both with the local chiefs and political actors in the center and even, paradoxically, with a number of local councilors.

This thesis analyzes the presence of blacks in Brazilian high bureaucracy exercised in the period between 2003-2010, Director of positions and Superior Consulting (DAS) in various ministries and especially the Secretariat for the Promotion of Racial Equality (SEPPIR) and the Palmares Cultural Foundation. The central hypothesis defended here is that they can be considered bureaucratic elites along the lines of what Wright Mills termed as "Positional method". The study focused on a group of 104 black held positions of trust in the federal government in Brasilia to be this city considered the center of power. From there, through the prosopography analyzed data on the social and political trajectory of these blacks who make up the Brazilian high bureaucracy, as well as their relationship with the social movements, political parties, trade unions and society. Also, know your academic background, forms of recruitment, work experience, relevance of the position held and then draw a radiograph of those blacks who hold or have held positions in the federal government and whether there is a way for the similar positions of power to other elite groups in Brazil.

▼ I examine media coverage of the economy and ask two fundamental question. Does news coverage distort economic reality? And, if so, what factors contribute to distortions between economic reality and media coverage? In this dissertation, I examine economic news coverage and test for evidence to support theories that economic news coverage is primarily A) Unbiased and rational, B) Universally ideologically biased in favor of one party or the other, C) Variable ideologically biased depending on the slant of the news outlet D) Institutionally biased due to reporters’ preference for stories that adhere to media norms and values or E) Some combination thereof. I conduct this analysis by collecting and coding an original dataset of unemployment news coverage in nine major news sources over 15 years. The final analysis includes 1,674 articles and nearly 10,000 quotes.
In Chapter 2, I evaluate the frames journalists use in newspaper headlines. I test the hypotheses that reporters frame similar unemployment situations differently at different points in time due to factors such as political context, electoral proximity, ideology of the president and ideology of the newspaper outlet. After accounting for objective economic conditions, I find evidence for universal ideological bias across newspapers. Reporters write more negative headlines when Republicans control the Whitehouse. I also find several pieces of evidence for institutional bias. First, headlines become disproportionately more negative when unemployment goes up, as compared to when unemployment goes down. And second, the power balance in government affects the way headlines are framed. Headlines are more negative, more likely to be prospective (forward-looking), and less likely to be framed as a surprise when government is divided.
In Chapter 3, I evaluate the rhetoric reported in unemployment news stories. I once again test the hypotheses that that reporters frame similar unemployment situations differently at different points in time due to factors such as political context, electoral proximity, ideology of the president and ideology of the newspaper outlet. As in Chapter 2, I find ideological bias for more negativity during Republican presidential administrations. I also find evidence that the news media’s institutional preferences for negativity, conflict and novelty all play in role in biasing the reporting of economic rhetoric.
In Chapter 4, I collect and code a secondary dataset of congressional press releases to analyze how reporters select rhetoric for newspaper articles. I investigate whether the substance of the message or the newsworthiness of the messenger affect the likelihood of media coverage. I test the hypothesis that institutional bias based on reporters’ preferences for balance, authoritative voices, impact, and negativity will lead them to cover certain messages and messengers more heavily. I find little support for institutional bias in the selection of congressional rhetoric. I find that congressional press releases rarely receive media…

▼ Athlete-centred coaching is proposed to enhance performance (Lyle, 2002), develop life skills (Kidman & Lombardo, 2010), and prevent athlete maltreatment (Kerr & Stirling, 2008). Despite the consistent recommendation, very little is known empirically about athlete-centred coaching, the extent to which it is implemented, or athletes’ experiences with this style of coaching. The purpose of this study therefore was to examine recently retired elite athletes’ perspectives on their most athlete-centred coach. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with eight male and female recently retired Olympians. The findings of this study provided mixed evidence for coaching behaviours characterized as athlete-centred coaching as defined within the literature. Specifically, at least half of the coaches did not use stimulating questions, one of the most central athlete-centred tenets. Explanations for the mixed findings are discussed and a continuum of athlete-centred coaching is proposed. Lastly, suggestions for future research and practical implications are presented.

▼ The aim of this thesis was to study played-created third-party tools in the massively multiplayer online game Elite: Dangerous through the lens of modding and argue that Elite tools constitute a type of game mod. Modding historically refers to players modifying game software, but modding in Elite is not sanctioned by the game developer. Elite players have instead created standalone tools (both web applications and downloadable programs) that harvest and utilise the game's informational content, or game data, to enhance Elite gameplay. The existing academic typology of game mods do not account for standalone tools, largely due to a lack of precise definition on what modding is and what player-creations can be considered as game mods.
Both Elite tools and their creators are studied. First, an empirical research on Elite tools was conducted that produced a typology of third-party tools and analysed their relation to the game. Second, a survey on Elite tool developers carried out to find out how they relate their creations as well as inquiring about their modding habits and views on the concept.
Although third-party tools can be considered as game mods as per academic definitions, the main finding of the thesis was that there is a disconnect in how players and academia define mods and modding. For players, game mods are those creations that explicitly alter game software, while academic definitions are more wide-ranging and include the notion of changing how a game is played.

▼ Recent studies on networking, social capital and elites have done much to expand academic knowledge in each of these topic areas. Elites are defined in several ways, including their attributes and their use of and access to power. However, far less research has been conducted on how those attributes and/or power are used by local political elites. A great deal of research has also been conducted on social capital, what it is and how it can benefit society, but less work has been done on the local politician’s individual production and use of social capital. Despite the important role that networks and networking play in producing social capital, local elite networks thus remain largely unexplored. We know little of how their networks are constructed and used in the pursuance of status and less on how the elite adapt the use of their networks in response to socio-economic change. In focusing on the construction and use of social capital networks by the Borough Aldermen and Councillors in Northampton over the longue durée, this work redresses those shortcomings. The research uses a large number and variety of sources which provide a wealth of qualitative and quantitative data with which to explore elite networking and social capital in the town. The work contributes towards furthering academic knowledge on how elites gain maintain and propagate status. The research reveals that the elite use two different constructs of networks, each of which provides different benefits for the user. It is the symbiosis of these networks which enables the political elite to respond to socio-economic and political events. The research also finds that overlapping networks produce the largest exchange of social capital, which is translated into gaining and maintaining status. It is clear that, over the longue durée, the importance of business networks in producing social capital has drastically reduced, and has been replaced by the growing importance of political association membership. It is also evident in the research that the expansion of formal institutions in the business and political arenas has led to individual Councillors and Aldermen making strategic choices. Using a market mentality of returns, they decide which networks give greater social capital and are thus more valuable and useful in gaining and maintaining elite status.

▼ Training stress in the absence of adequate recovery has been associated with a decrease in well-being and performance. Thus, there is potential for the high training and competition loads that elite English youth football players experience to have a negative effect on wellbeing and performance. The aim of the thesis was to assess the utility of well-being and physical performance assessments in managing the development of elite English youth football players. The first study (Chapter 4) examined the sensitivity of a subjective well-being questionnaire (WQ; developed ‘in-house’ by sport science practitioners at a category two academy and only taking < 30 s to complete), by comparing the player’s next day responses between two acute training bouts of varied duration; 15 mins (low load) compared to 90 mins (high load) high intensity intermittent exercise (Loughborough intermittent shuttle test, LIST). WQ items showed small to large deteriorations following the high load compared to low load (d=0.4-1.5, P=0.03-0.57). The ability of the WQ to differentiate between responses to high and low training loads indicated that this questionnaire could be used to detect training induced stress prior to training on a daily basis throughout the season. Other modes of monitoring assessment evaluated were either not sensitive to differentiate between high and low loads (countermovement jump; CMJ) or detected differences between high and low training load responses (HR indices) but lacked utility in detecting individual changes. The second study (Chapter 5) applied well-being and physical performance assessments to elite English youth football players during a high intensity, low volume pre-season training period. Trivial changes in perception of WQ items of sleep, recovery, appetite, fatigue, stress and muscle soreness were observed across weeks (P=0.35-0.93, 2 P =0.02-0.08) with no negative WQ responses evident. Internal training load was lower to a large extent in week 1 (P= < 0.001, 2P =0.54) yet no differences in internal training load were evident across weeks two, three, four and five. Trivial to small associations (r=-0.21 to 0.19) between internal training load and WQ responses were observed. Small to moderate improvements in aerobic performance were evident post training in comparison with pre training (P < 0.001-0.53, d= 0.33 – 0.94) with a large to moderate improvement in submaximal HR measures (P < 0.001 – 0.09; 2 P = 0.34 - 0.74) observed across the training weeks. Trivial to moderate impairments in neuromuscular performance were evident post training in comparison with pre training (P < 0.001 – 0.21; d=0.17 – 1.00). Collectively, the preservation of well-being prior to each training session during a pre-season period and improvements in aspects of physical performance were indicative of a balance between stress and recovery. The third study (Chapter 6) examined player perceptions of well-being and physical performance across a season in Elite English youth football players. Increases in training exposure (P <…

▼ The purpose of this study was to exam the possible differences in the experienced self-confidence and motivation among the elite players in bandy and amateur players in bandy. In addition, any differences between boys and girls within the same area to be studied. A total of 112 athletes participated of whom 52 of them classified as elite players and 60 amateur players, with 62 boys and 50 girls. The athletes filled at one point in the questionnaires The Sport Motivation Scale, Harter’s (1980) “competence scale” and The Sport Confidence Inventory. The results demonstrated differences between elite players and amateur players in the variables perceived motivation and perceived self-confidence. The results showed that the amateur players had a higher perceived amotivation than elite players experienced in this study. Furthermore, results showed that elite players feel they have a higher sport-confidence than amateur players had. Furthermore, it shows also the result of a significant difference between boys and girls perceived motivation and sport-confidence in this study. The boys show a higher result in motivation and sport-confidence.

▼ Pursuing a career as a professional athlete has become a viable option for talented athletes to pursue. However, in their pursuit of athletic excellence many athletes neglect their academic, work and post sport career planning. To help athletes with participation, educational, development and lifestyle issues many countries have developed athlete assistance programs. To achieve the objective of a Winning Nation and help talented South African athletes develop and perform at a higher level the South African Sports Confederation and Olympic Committee (SASCOC) plans to establish a national academy system. The role of the academy system is to assist in addressing the demographics of the national teams by accelerating the development of talented athletes particularly those from the disadvantaged groups. To ensure that a holistic approach is taken towards athlete development one of the services that will be provided is life skills training. To develop a successful life skills program, it is essential to identify the important life skills to include.
Aim
The aim of the study was to explore and identify the life skills necessary for inclusion in Life Skills programs in South African
elite sport focusing on the development of adolescent athletes to enable them to grow up competent, healthy and reach their full potential.
Design
A pure qualitative research design was employed using thematic analysis. Data was analysed through the lens of Positive Youth Development (PYD) theory. Moreover, a semi-structured interview guide, consisting of open ended questions, was developed utilizing the 5 C’s of PYD as themes to facilitate the interview process. Nine current adolescent
elite South African athletes, on the MacSteel Maestro’s program, participated in the study. A purposive sampling procedure informed the sampling process and a thematic coding framework was developed to analyse the interview data.
Results
Findings of the research provided a contribution to the literature in two ways. First, it provided a South African perspective of the life skills needed by
elite adolescent athletes. Secondly, it identified the life skills
elite adolescent South African athletes deemed important for their holistic development to include in life skills programs in South African
elite sport. Time management and self - esteem / self – confidence skills were identified as the crucial life skills to be developed.
Conclusion
In general it can be concluded that the participants have benefitted from being on the MMP, and that the participants exhibited characteristics of competence, confidence, character, connection and caring / compassion both in and out of sport.

▼ This thesis focuses on two case studies of 'air transport liberalisation' and tests the effect of 'elite' and 'non-elite' air transport interests on the Proposal making dynamics of the European Commission. The hypotheses test whether the properties of 'liberal intergovernmentalism' (the domination by 'elite interests' at the national level), are reflected in the behaviour of the Commission when formulating its Proposals; this new form of liberal intergovernmentalism is defined as a neo-liberal intergovernmentalism. The hypotheses also test whether an 'elite accommodation' is necessary within interest groups in order for their positions to successfully affect Commission actions. Furthermore, the thesis examines the relevance of the decision making formula within groups, and its subsequent relationship to Commission conduct. The thesis finds that there exist substantial differences in the responses to 'elite interests' within the Commission between DGVII, the transport Directorate and DGIV, the competition Directorate. DGIV is also the unique quasi-judicial arm of the Commission. The thesis finds that a neo-liberal intergovernmentalism indeed exists when one focuses on the role of DGVII, but does not exist when one focuses on the role of DGIV. Furthermore, the thesis finds that the decision making within groups, and their adherence to 'elites within the group' plays a substantial role in determining the position of DGVII, but not in determining the position of DGIV. However, the thesis also finds that the path which DGIV needs to follow in order to pursue its goals, because of its reliance on the College of Commissioners to take 'official' action, is affected by the hypotheses. Crucially however, the thesis also finds that DGIV has an array of options with which to pursue its goals, (if it does not gain the support of a majority of the College), which are considerably beyond what the Member States, and their composite 'elite interests' may be content with.

▼ Consensually united elites are said to be very rare and as such limit the possibility for the spread of liberal democracy across the world. In Africa, Ghana presents itself as a case in point, not only because it is one of the most democratic countries in Africa but also the fact that political elites have been accorded the force behind this success. The study therefore examines the place of elite consensus in Ghana’s political landscape by examining the political parties, elections, the legislature and national development planning in the fourth republic. This analysis was made based on a wealth of knowledge provided by numerous scholars on the topic of elite consensus and how this concept is connected to democratic development. Within the Ghanaian political dispensation, based on some operational benchmarks, this study adopted self-perceptions expressed in qualitative, in-depth interviews with a limited number of political party executives, think-tanks, parliamentarians, civil servants and National Development Planning Commission (NDPC) officials. The study found out that political elites in Ghana are very united and as such depicts a horizontal integration of elites as explained by Higley and Burton. This has accounted for Ghana’s envious democratic strides. However, this consensus is only on issues affecting elites and not the citizens which are particularly indicative in Ghana’s legislature and national development planning since the start of the fourth republic. This finding goes against Higley and Burton’s vertically integrated elitism, which suggests a great cohesion between elites and the masses. This then confirms the hypothesis of the study which states that Ghana lacks an enduring elite consensus which has negatively affected national development. In light of these conclusions, the study prescribes some remedies in solving Ghana’s deficits on elite consensus towards national development in the long-run. They include having a third force in Ghana’s political arena, some constitutional amendments, effective civic education, procuring a national agenda on national development planning and effective conflict resolution mechanisms.

The sociology of elites has regained momentum in recent decades due to increasing income gaps between the rich and poor throughout the world. In the domains of elite school research, existing studies have examined how children enrolled in these schools acquire a sense of entitlement and/or privilege. However, how the parents of these children come to construct an elite status culture (status work) through their everyday interactions around the school setting is less clear. In the existing stratification research, parents, particularly mothers, had been studied as main agents of class reproduction through parenting practices (class work). I argue in this dissertation research that considering both aspects of class and status work is important because women with children simultaneously play two roles in the household—class reproduction and status enhancement.
For a case study, I observed the preschool section of an ‘international school’ in Tokyo, called Wakana International School, a new type of new-elite school in Asian countries, which has been actively sought out by local privileged families to help prepare their children to achieve upward social mobility in the global stratification hierarchy. I followed local affluent families, in particular the mothers (Wakana mothers). I focused on their transnational education practices in Tokyo and Hawai‘i from 2011 to 2014.
My findings reveal that these local affluent families chose Wakana according to their respective class trajectories, as a consequence of the interplay between their volume and composition of economic, cultural and social capital, and the elite tracking structure in Tokyo. Once admitted to Wakana, they engaged in 'transnational class and status work' by cultivating their child's global and national cultural capital through transnational education practices with the objective of raising their child as a new elite in this changing economy. In the process, they came to acquire a disposition of being at-ease in their 'status work' as new elite mothers. Their new elite disposition, shaped by their mobile, free, cosmopolitan and extravagant styles of life was obtained as a result of assuming institutional responsibilities, and by meeting expectations and conforming to the morals of international schooling.
