Diese Arbeit beschäftigt sich mit der Suche nach dem Higgs-Boson.rn Dazu wurden die Daten des D0-Experimentes am Fermi National rn Accelerator Laboratory analysiert. Diese stammen ausrn Proton-Antiproton-Kollisionen, welche vom Tevatron-Beschleuniger beirn einer Schwerpunktsenergie von sqrt(s)=1.96 TeV erzeugtrn wurden. Der Datensatz umfasst mit einer integrierten Luminosität vonrn 9.7 fb^-1 den vollen RunII, welcher von April 2002 bisrn September 2011 aufgezeichnet wurde. Die Suche wurde für dreirn unterschiedliche Modelle durchgeführt: Das Standardmodell, einrn fermiophobes Higgs-Modell und ein Modell mit einer viertenrn Fermiongeneration. Zusätzlich wurde der Wirkungsquerschnitt derrn nicht resonanten WW-Produktion gemessen.rnrn Dazu wurden Daten mit einem Elektron, einem Myon und fehlenderrn Transversalenergie im Endzustand untersucht. Dieser Endzustand wirdrn beim Zerfall eines Higgs-Bosons in zwei W-Bosonen mit anschließendemrn Zerfall in ein Elektron, ein Myon und zwei Neutrinos erwartet undrn weist die größte Sensitivität für die Suche am Tevatron auf.rnrn Weder für das Standardmodell noch für die erweiterten Modelle konntern ein Hinweis auf ein Higgs-Signal gefunden werden. Deshalb wurdenrn obere Grenzen auf den Produktionswirkungsquerschnitt für diern einzelnen Modelle bestimmt. Die oberen Grenzen für Higgs-Bosonen imrn Rahmen des Standardmodells reichen von 28*sigma_SM für einrn Higgs-Boson mit einer Masse von 100 GeV bis zu einemrn Ausschluss des Standardmodell-Higgs-Bosons im Bereich zwischen 160rn und 167 GeV mit 95% Vertrauensniveau. Damit ist der inrn dieser Arbeit beschriebene Kanal der einzige Kanal amrn D0-Experiment, welcher eine ausreichend hohe Sensitivität erreicht,rn um allein ein Higgs-Boson im hohen Massenbereich auszuschließen. Fürrn ein Higgs-Boson mit 125 GeV Masse sind die Ergebnisse sowohlrn mit der Signal+Untergrund- als auch mit der Untergrund-Hypothesern kompatibel. rn Im Rahmen des fermiophoben Higgs-Modells wurden oberen Grenzenrn zwischen 2*sigma_FHM und 4*sigma_FHM imrn Massenbereich zwischen 100 und 170 GeV bestimmt. Für diern betrachteten Modelle mit einer vierten Fermiongeneration konnte einrn Higgs-Boson in einem weiten Massenbereich zwischen 135 undrn 220 GeV mit 95% Vertrauensniveau ausgeschlossen werden.rnrn Die Messung des Wirkungsquerschnitts der nicht-resonantenrn WW-Produktion ist die genaueste Messung fürrn sqrt(s)=1.96 TeV. Der gemessene Wirkungsquerschnitt beträgtrn sigma_ppbar->WW^em=11.1 +- 0.6 (stat.) +- 0.6 (syst.) pbrn und bestätigt damit die theoretische NLO-Vorhersage im Rahmen ihrerrn Unsicherheiten.rn

▼ Todays research in particle physics offers a wide field of opportunities for scientists from a variety of different subjects. Discoveries can only be made, with hundreds up to thousands of people working together in collaborations. Designing high precision detectors that can be up to several stories tall, followed by production, construction, commissioning and successful operation is only achievable with the combined effort of skilled and experienced detector physicists and engineers, while the vast amount of data recorded with those detectors calls for specialists in data analysis which are able to find the needle in a haystack or in other words the higgs in a sea of underground events. One of the biggest science collaborations worldwide is the ATLAS collaboration with more than 5000 members from around 180 institutes. ATLAS is one of four big particle physics experiments at the LHC. Its tracking system has been upgraded with a new innermost layer, referred to as Insertable B-Layer (IBL), in 2014. This thesis will focus on the construction, commissioning and first year of operation of the IBL detector and give a brief outlook on upgrade plans for the tracking system. The performance of the IBL and its services was observed before and after each step of its construction. Quality assurance measurements were performed to select the best working staves for the IBL construction. A system test was performed to verify the correct functionality of the final setup were the IBL was built on. A thorough commissioning testing the supply chain, the readout and the performance of complete detector was carried out in a clean room and repeated after installation in ATLAS. Several steps of re-testing took place after the IBL was exposed to thermal stress. The results of each commissioning step will be presented and discussed. During the first year of operating the IBL, an increase of the low voltage currents in the readout chips was observed. A model to understand this increase will be introduced as well as measurements that were used to develop an operation guideline to protect the detector while continuing to take data. The last part of this thesis will give a brief introduction to an alternative method for module hybridisation that was investigated as a possible option for the next upgrade of the ATLAS tracking system. ▼ Two analyses in the field of particle physics are presented in this document. First,studies on the performance of the reconstruction of muons using calorimeter inform-ation under the conditions of the High-Luminosity Large-Hadron-Collider (HL-LHC)phase of theATLASdetector. Second, the search for the Standard Model (SM) sim-ultaneous production of four top quarks using the full Run-II data set recorded byATLAS. This data set corresponds to an integrated luminosity ofL= 139 fb−1ofproton–proton collisions at a centre of mass energy of√s= 13 TeV.Here, the performance of the reconstruction of muons is probed for different pile-upscenarios, as those expected for the HL-LHC phase, and in light of different noise scen-arios that emulate the loss of energy resolution and deterioration of detector acceptancedue to ageing and irradiation of detector components. This study is conducted to testproposed detector upgrade scenarios before their implementation.The search for SM like four top quark production presented here, focuses on the de-cay modes with two same sign or more leptons in the final state. The search for thisprocess is, among other factors, motivated by the very large energies involved and bythe fact that it is likely on the verge of being discovered with currently available datasets. The final results are obtained in a profile likelihood fit involving the outcome of aboosted decision tree trained to discriminate between signal and background. The fitresults in a production cross section ofσ(pp→tt tt) = 24+7−6fb, which correspondsto an observed (expected) significance ofZ= 4.3(Z= 2.4). This represents the firstevidence for this process. The obtained result is compatible with the SM prediction within 1.7 standard deviations.Following first evidence, the possibility of reconstructing the four top quark systemusing a kinematic likelihood approach is developed and tested. These developmentsare performed with theKLFitter tool set and yield an efficiency of correctlymatching all four top quarks of ε = 33±4 %under optimal conditions in the singlelepton final state. Das P̅ANDA Experiment bei FAIR in Darmstadt, Deutschland, wird Antiproton-Proton Annihilationsprozesse bei einem Antiprotonen Impuls von 1.5 GeV/c bis 15 GeV/c verwenden, um die starke Wechselwirkung zu untersuchen. Der PANDA Detektor befindet sich derzeit im Bau und wird ab 2022 in Betrieb sein. Um die resultierenden Teilchen nach der Kollision genau zu indentifizieren und zwischen aufeinander-folgenden Ereignissen zu unterscheiden, braucht das Experiment ein fortgeschrittenes Detektorsystem für die Teilchenidentification. Wir arbeiten an der Entwicklung und dem Bau eines Flugzeitdetektors, der SciTil (Scintillator Tile) Hodoscope Detektor, der im Zentralbereich (〖20〗^°-〖140〗^°) liegt und eine Fläche von ~5.7m² hat. Der SciTil Hodoscope Detektor wird aus 1920 Szintillatoren errichtet werden, wobei jeder Szintillator eine Dimension von 90x30x5 mm³ hat und von Silizium Photomultipliern (SiPM) ausgelesen wird. Der Detektor muss eine Zeitauflösung unter σ=100 ps haben und darf eine maximale radiale Dicke von 2 cm aufweisen. Die Entwicklung eines einzelnen Prototypen (Szintillator+SiPMs) ist in der Endphase. Nach der Optimierung von Szintillatormaterial, Reflexionsmaterial, Sensoren etc. ist die beste gemessene Zeitauflösung σ~50 ps, die mit 4 Hamamatsu SiPMs (S13360) in einer seriellen Verbindung erreicht wurde.

The P̅ANDA experiment at FAIR situated in Darmstadt, Germany will use proton-antiproton collisions, with momenta ranging from 1.5 GeV/c to 15 GeV/c, for strong interaction studies. The detector is currently under construction. It will be in operation after 2022. In order to identify the charged particles accurately, and differentiate between subsequent events, the detector will need several advanced particle identification systems. We are working on the development of a SciTil (Scintillator Tile) hodoscope detector, which will be located in the central region (20º-140º) and cover ~5.7 m² area. It is built out of 1920 scintillator tiles, each of which has a dimension of 90x30x5 mm³, and is readout by Silicon Photomultipliers (SiPM). The SciTil detector will be capable of providing fast and highly accurate event timing. The requirements for this detector are an intrinsic time resolution below σ = 100 ps and a geometry which fits along 2 cm in radial direction. The goal of this thesis is to investigate and improve the time resolution of a single scintillator tile. After optimizing the scintillator material, sensors, wrapping etc., the best time resolution we achieved was σ~50 ps with 4 Hamamatsu SiPMs S13360-3050-PE connected in series.

Die Multiplizitätsverteilungen von geladenen Sekundärteilchen (Pionen, Protonen, Alphateilchen und andere Kernfragmente) für niederenergetische Antiprotonenannihilationen sind kaum bekannt. Sie sind aber ein wichtiger Bestandteil von Monte-Carlo Simulationen, welche z.B. den Hintergrund bei Antimaterie-Experimenten modellieren sollen. Solche Simulationen werden heutzutage hauptsächlich mit den Software-Paketen CHIPS, FLUKA und FRITIOF durchgeführt. Diese Pakete wurden für Anwendungen in der Hochenergiephysik geschrieben. Simulationen im niederenergetischen Bereich werden entsprechend extrapoliert. Bis vor einigen Jahren gab es keine experimentellen Messdaten von Antiproton-Nukleus Annihilationen in diesem Energiebereich (<1 keV), wodurch die genannten Modelle nicht validiert werden konnten. Erste Vergleiche zeigen, dass keines der 3 Pakete niederenergetische Annihilationen befriedigend modelliert. Die ASACUSA (Atomic Spectroscopy And Collisions Using Slow Antiprotons) Collaboration führte Ende 2017 eine systematische Studie von Annihilationen niederenergetischer Antiprotonen an einer dünnen Kohlenstoff-Folie durch. Die vorhandene Beamline wurde um eine elektrostatische Linse (Steerer lens) erweitert. Ein Bismut-Germanat (BGO) Detektor des Antiwasserstoff-Experiments wurde für dieses Experiment durch einen Timepix3-Pixeldetektor ersetzt. Im Rahmen dieser Masterarbeit wurden einige der Neuerungen vor ihrem Einsatz getestet. Auch wurden Messungen des Magnetfeldes vor Ort am CERN durchgeführt, welche in zukünftige Simulationen einfließen sollten, sowie ein erster Blick auf die Daten, welche mit Timepix3 aufgezeichnet wurden, geboten.

The multiplicity distribution of charged annihilation products (pions, protons, alpha particles and other nuclear fragments) is not well known for antiprotons annihilating at rest on nuclei. However, this information is important for Monte-Carlo simulations to model the background for antimatter experiments. Current simulations are being performed mainly with the CHIPS, FLUKA or FRITIOF packages. These were written for application in high-energy physics. They extrapolate their data for simulations in the low-energy range. Up until a few years ago, the absence of experimental data in this range (<1 keV) made validation of these models difficult. First comparisons show that none of these 3 packages was able to satisfyingly model low-energy annihilations. At the end of 2017, the ASACUSA (Atomic Spectroscopy And Collisions Using Slow Antiprotons) Collaboration conducted a systematic study of low-energy antiproton annihilations on a thin carbon foil. An electrostatic lens (Steerer lens) was added to the existing beamline. The bismuth germanate (BGO) detector from antihydrogen experiments was replaced with a Timepix3 pixel detector during annihilation studies. In the scope of this thesis, the additions to the beamline were tested before their usage. ▼ Das LHCb Experiment am Large Hadron Collier am CERN wird momentan für die nächste Datennahme verändert und modernisiert. Die instantane Luminosität wird um einen Faktor fünf erhöht, damit mehr Daten in kürzerer Zeit aufgenommen werden können. Die erste Stufe der Datennahme, der Hardwaretrigger, wird entfernt. LHCb muss nun eine Kollisionsrate von 30MHz in Echtzeit verarbeiten. In dieser Arbeit werden drei Projekte vorgestellt,die signifikant zu der Entwicklung eines schnellen und effizienten Triggersystems beitragen. Der erste Beitrag ist ein Scheduling Algorithmus mit vernachlässigbarem Overhead in der neuen Trigger-Applikation. Der Algorithmus steuert das Multi-Threading des Systems und ist der erste Algorithmus in LHCb, der den technischen Spezifikationen des Systems genügt. Durch die Restriktion auf Inter-Event Parallelismus können die meisten teuren Entscheidungen schon vor der Laufzeit der Applikation getroffen werden. Der zweite Beitrag besteht aus mehreren Algorithmen zur Filterung und Kombination von Teilchen in der Kollision. Diese Algorithmen sind bis zu mehreren Größenordnungen schneller als die aktuellen, etablierten Algorithmen. Der Einsatz der neuen Algorithmen in der zweiten Trigger-Phase (HLT2) ist ein wichtiger Schritt zur Vervollständigung eines Trigger-Systems, dass den erhöhten Anforderungen entspricht. Das letzte Projekt beschäftigt sich mit der Bandbreite, mit der der Trigger Kollisionen abspeichert. Dazu wird die wichtigste Selektion im HLT2 betrachtet, der topologische Trigger. Dieser Trigger versucht, Zerfälle von beauty Hadronen inklusiv zu selektieren. Zuerst wird der Selektionsalgorithmus selber optimiert.
