▼ Large numbers of installed medium or high voltage power cables are now of advanced age and have gradual insulation deterioration problems. On-line Partial Discharge (PD) measurement has inherent advantages over the conventional off-line measurement, but it also suffers from a very significant Electro-Magnetic Interference (EMI) problem due to the small PD signal levels being monitored. The large magnitude EMI signal often completely swamps the smaller magnitude PD signal, making it difficult to monitor anything but extremely large PD activity. To monitor cable condition and to be able to assess insulation degradation trends requires advanced techniques. In this thesis, the issues of sensor selection, digital filtering, software based on-line differential technique and wavelet Transform (WT) de-noising techniques are studied. Their applicability, advantages and limitations are discussed with the simulation and high voltage measurement results. The High Frequency Current Transformer (HFCT) type PD sensor is selected after being compared with other sensor in term of sensitivity, universal applicability, frequency response and the installation difficulty. The sinusoidal noise frequency identification and application of the conventional digital filtering are studied. The Least Mean Square (LMS) and Recursive Least Square (RLS) algorithm digital adaptive filters are compared in detail and RLS adaptive filter is selected. Wavelet transform de-noising technique for on-line PD measurement is carefully studied and the applications of noise reduction are developed. A novel WT threshold value selection algorithm is presented in this thesis. The new WT algorithm is compared with the existing wavelet techniques using numerical simulation and laboratory high voltage testing data on cables. The results show that this new fully automatic WT de-noising method has achieved great progress with the capability of detection 30 pC PD signal during on-site on-line measurement where typical noise level is ten times higher in magnitude. On the basis of traditional off-line differential or balanced detection circuit, a software based on-line differential technique is proposed in this thesis. The novel method developed has the capability to process one whole AC cycle of PD data. It enables traditional q-Φ and n-Φ distributions to be obtained as well as PD repetition rates and the usual integrated PD parameters. These techniques are developed for the on-site on-line PD measurement in power cables, but they are not limited to cables. They can also be applied to other high voltage equipment with minor or without modification in the data acquisition procedure.

▼ The location of faults in low-attenuation coaxial cables and open-wire lines by the use of the echo-ranging techniques of radar prompted this investigation of a method to accurately locate faults in underground power cables. As the propagation-velocity of disturbances on a smooth line or cable is constant, the time delay between the transmission of a pulse into a cable and the reception of an echo from an internal discontinuity is proportional to the distance to the discontinuity. The low inductance and high dielectric losses in power cables attenuate and distort the pulses. This distortion limits the accuracy and range of equipment which must measure time intervals to the nearest 3 x 10⁻⁸ seconds. Basically, the Echo Ranger consists of a portable low-voltage impulse generator combined with a timing Oscillator and a delayed high-speed sweep on a commercial split-beam oscilloscope. A high-power hydrogen thyratron delivers 0.1-microsecond pulses of five kilowatts (peak) to the cable. Although the range of the apparatus now constructed is only two miles on power cable, faults at least five miles away should be visible. The minimum resistance of a detectable series fault is about five ohms and the maximum resistance of a detectable shunt fault is about 2000 ohms. Without modification, the Echo Ranger can be used on overhead lines up to four miles long. On a 1044-foot piece of RG8U polyethylene cable, two 100-ohm shunt faults 20.8 feet apart were located within 0.63%. On a three-conductor oil-filled lead-sheathed power cable 1389 feet long, a transformer tap 424 feet away and a Joint 320 feet away were located within 1.2%. The apparatus can be readily modified to deliver 16-kilovolt 5-megawatt (peak) pulses to initiate and locate an arc at incipient faults. The power to hold the arc must come from a superimposed power supply such as a kenotron set or the normal line voltage. Further refinements which increase the accuracy and range without sacrificing simplicity of operation could be applied to advantage.

▼ Electromagnetic effects of lightning currents during a direct hit to tall communication towers, other instrumented towers and chimneys can be hazardous to associated cables, as well as, electrical and electronics systems. The standard practice in telecommunication and other related fields is to bond the cable sheath to the tower and ground connection is made before it enters the base station. However, in some specific cases when power, signal and data logging cables are to be supported on the same tower, isolation of power cables is demanded. In a totally different situation, attempts are also made to have a dedicated isolated down conductor. A critical review of the situation demanded a more quantitative answer to the following questions: (i) whether it is possible to electrically isolate a dedicated down conductor, (ii) is it possible to electrically isolate the cables and their terminal equipment both mounted on towers serving as down conductor and if so, what will be the nature of current induced in the cables and (iii) as per the standard practice, if the cable sheaths are connected to the tower/structure, what will be the nature of the current shared by them. Addressing these important issues formed the scope of the present work. For the tall structures considered in this work, for the critical time periods, wave nature of the current dominates. This called for electromagnetic modeling covering Transverse Magnetic (TM) mode of the wave propagation. Owing to the complex geometrical features involved with the problem, both experiments on electromagnetically scaled laboratory models, as well as, theoretical simulation is attempted. An electromagnetically scaled laboratory model is employed for the time domain experimental investigation. This approach, which has been validated earlier, is further scrutinized to ensure its adequacy. In order to achieve generality and noting the fact that the associated parameters are rather difficult to be varied in the experimentation, theoretical investigation is also employed. For this, both NEC-2, as well as, an in-house thin wire time domain code developed for this work is employed. NEC-2 could handle multi-wire multi-radius junctions, while in-house time domain code could handle proximity and non-cylindrical shapes encountered with tower lattice elements. The investigation of induction to isolated cables on simple down conductors and towers is considered first. The induced current is shown to be bipolar oscillatory with the period of oscillation governed by the length of the cable. It is shown that the level of induction for good earth termination is below 5 – 10 % while that with moderate inductance in the earth termination can enhance the induction to higher levels. The level of induction is shown to be not critically dependent on the length of the cable, gap between cable and down conductor/tower. When multiple cables are mounted, they seem to influence each other and individually carry currents of lower amplitude. Este trabalho é um conjunto de conhecimentos sistematizado, alguns já disponíveis através da engenharia e/ou da tecnologia, e outros desenvolvidos durante este trabalho para solução de problemas que freqüentemente se apresentam na modalidade de instalação de linhas de transmissão subterrânea enterradas diretamente no solo. Nas linhas de transmissão diretamente enterrada, a corrente máxima circulante nos condutores depende do salto térmico entre o condutor e a temperatura máxima do solo em um ponto remoto onde os cabos estão instalados. Duas variáveis além da corrente teem um papel de extrema relevância: A resistência elétrica do condutor e blindagens que define as perdas joules geradas pelos condutores e capas metálicas, respectivamente e a resistência térmica externa do solo circunstante ao cabo enterrado. A parte devido às perdas joules já foi exaustivamente estudada e sistematização atual é suficiente para a solução da maioria dos problemas de engenharia, mas a parte do conhecimento da resistência térmica externa tem ainda muitos pontos que ainda não foram totalmente esclarecidos: sejam na modelagem, sejam nos materiais sejam no controle da fenomenologia. O escopo deste trabalho é dar uma contribuição no papel da resistência térmica externa aos cabos enterrados através de uma engenharia simultânea (Elétrica, Mecânica e Civil) assistida por tecnologia de desenvolvimento de materiais (Backfill).

The present work is a set of systematized knowledge, some of them available in the engineering and technological literature and others developed during this work to solve problems which presents in direct buried cables modalities. In direct buried transmission lines the current carrying in the conductors depends on the temperature rise of the conductor in respect of the temperature of remote soil. Two variables beyond the electrical current on the conductor play a paramount role: The electrical resistance of the conductor and sheaths which define the Joules losses upon the conductor and sheath and the thermal resistance between cable and soil. The role of Joule losses has been sufficiently studied providing solutions for large class of engineering problems, but the available knowledge regarding external thermal resistivity has several points under considerations yet: Even in modeling, materials and phenomenology control. The scope of this work is to present a short contribution on the role of external thermal resistance between cables and soil through the simultaneous frame work (Electrical, Mechanical and Civil engineering) and Technological development of materials (Backfill).

Atualmente, a intensidade de campo elétrico, campo magnético e campo eletromagnético é um fator determinante não só para a implantação de novas instalações, mas também, para as instalações existentes no sistema elétrico. Apesar de não existir nenhum estudo conclusivo que comprove a evidência direta entre a exposição a estes campos e os efeitos nocivos na saúde das pessoas, muitos países, inclusive o Brasil, definiram em suas legislações limites básicos à exposição de campos elétrico e magnético provenientes dos sistemas elétricos. Este trabalho tem como objetivo contribuir para análise de campo magnético de linhas subterrâneas de alta tensão existentes ou linhas em fase inicial de projeto, visando atender os limites de exposição vigentes na legislação local. Nele é apresentada a metodologia de cálculo de campo magnético baseada na Lei de Biot-Savart e no princípio da superposição. Estudos analíticos para verificação da influência dos parâmetros de instalação e elétricos de linhas sobre o campo magnético são apresentados para linhas subterrâneas de alta tensão compostas por um e dois circuitos com diferentes tipos de instalação e aterramentos. Comparações entre valores analíticos e valores de medições de campo magnético de linhas subterrâneas de alta tensão existentes em operação também são abordadas neste trabalho. As principais técnicas de mitigação de campo magnético utilizadas em linhas subterrâneas de alta tensão, tais como técnicas de compensação envolvendo laços de cabos e técnicas de blindagens com materiais metálicos externos aos cabos, também são apresentadas. Devido ao campo elétrico externo ao cabo isolado ser praticamente zero, assuntos referentes a este campo não são abordados neste trabalho. Por simplicidade, campo magnético refere-se à densidade de fluxo magnético neste documento.

Nowadays, the intensity of electric field, magnetic field and electromagnetic field is a determining factor, not only for implantation of new installations, but also for existing installations in the power system. Although no exist conclusive study that proves the direct evidence between exposure to these fields and adverse effects on human health, many countries, including Brazil, have defined in their laws basic limits for exposure to electric and magnetic fields produced by the electric system. This work aims to contribute to analysis of magnetic field for both existing high voltage underground lines and lines in initial stage of project, aiming the actual exposure limits of the local legislation. In it, is shown the magnetic field calculation methodology based on the Biot-Savart\'s law and the superposition principle. Analytical studies to verify the influence of installation and electrical parameters of lines on the magnetic field are presented for high voltage underground lines consist of one and two circuits with different types of installation and earthing. Comparisons between analytical and measurement values of magnetic field of existing high voltage underground lines in operation are also addressed in this work.…

I samband med att mellanspänningsnätet kablifieras ökar också kraven vad gäller fellokalisering. För att hålla avbrottstiderna i nätet korta är effektiv felsökning erforderlig. Detta arbete syftar till att kartlägga och redogöra för begränsande faktorer som finns vid fellokalisering med fokus på pulsekometoden. Uppdraget utförs tillsammans med Vattenfall Eldistribution AB. Det har uppdagats problem gällande fellokalisering på mellanspänningskablar med pulsekometoden. Ett flertal faktorer bidrar till denna problematik. Resultatet från studien visar att kabelkonstruktionen är en betydande del i det som begränsar pulsekometodens användningsområden och funktionalitet. Rapporten redogör för grundläggande information kring konstruktion och typer av mellanspänningskablar. Kartläggningen uppvisar hur vattenträd påverkar en kabel negativt. Allmänt redogörs för vad som orsakar vattenträd samt vilka avhjälpande åtgärder som vidtas; trippelextrudering samt mantel- och isolationsprovning. Vidare beskrivs olika feltyper, kabeltyper, kabelgenerationer samt instrument- och metodtyper som alla är påverkande faktorer vid fellokalisering. Dokumentering är i högsta grad väsentligt för en lyckad felsökningsprocedur, vilket klarläggs i rapporten. Utöver dokumentation redogörs för hur kabelns kondition kan påverka felsökningsresultatet. Ett antal mätmetoder och mätinstrument finns till förfogande vid felsökning och provning. Alla har sina egna för- respektive nackdelar. De har även tillhörande användningsområden. As the medium voltage network cables in Sweden is buried down in the earth, the demand of fault localization expertise increases. To keep downtimes in the network short, the importance of effective fault localization is necessary. This work is aimed to map and visualize limiting factors within fault localization with focus on the TDR - Time Domain Reflectometry. This work is a collaboration with Vattenfall Eldistribution AB. Problems with fault localization on medium voltage cables with the TDR have been detected. A multiple factors are contributing to this problem. The results of this study show that the cable construction is a significant part in which extent the TDR can be used. The report are also accounting for basic information about construction and types. The mapping also illustrates water treeing and how it affects cables in a negative way. Visualization of what causes water treeing and several actions such as triple extrusion, jacket testing and insulation testing is included in the essay. Further information about fault types, cable types, cable generations, instrument types and method types is given. All of them are affecting factors within the area of fault localization. ENGLISH ABSTRACT: This dissertation documents the design and testing of a partially filled radial power combiner with a passive peripheral isolation network, at 4 GH'. A review of available literature on power combiners highlights the advantages of radial combiners. The theory of radial transmission lines is presented, and such a power combiner without an isolation network is designed first. A printed circuit board is utilised at the bottom of the radial line cavity to aid in transitions at the central and peripheral ports. The centre transition into a coaxial connector consists of a shunt capacitance realised by an annular ring on the PCB. This also acts as a base for the coaxial connector. At the periphery, inductive posts couple energy from the radial cavity into microstrip lines. This approach is taken for compatibility with the ensuing planar passive isolation network at the peripheral ports. Broadside hybrid quadrature couplers are arranged around two almost identical radial combiners to implement the isolation.

AFRIKAANSE OPSOMMING: Hierdie proefskrif beskryf die ontwerp en toets van ‘n gedeeltelik gevulde radiale kombineerder met n passiewe isolasie netwerk, by 4 GHz. Die voordele van radiale kombineerders blyk uit die oorsig van beskikbare literatuur. Na ‘n uitleg van die betrokke teorie word n poging aangewend om eerstens ‘n radiale kombineerder te ontwerp sonder die isolasie netwerk. Die middel konnektor termineer op ‘n koper ring, uitgeëts op n dielektriese substraat. Daar word gebruik gemaak van induktiewe penne en mikrostrook lyne by die poorte aan die omtrek van die kombineerder. Sodoende is die kombineer gepas vir uitbreiding met ‘n planêre isolasie netwerk. Die netwerk bestaan uit ‘n rangskikking van 3-dB breësy kwadratuurkoppelaars wat twee eenderse radiale kombineerders aanmekaar haak.

▼ The focus of this research is on identification, location, interruption, characterization and overall management of faults in conventional AC distribution systems as well as isolated MVDC power systems. The primary focus in AC distributions systems is on identifying and locating underground cable faults using voltage and current waveforms as the input data. Cable failure process is gradual and is characterized by a series of single-phase sub-cycle incipient faults with high arc voltage. They often go undetected and eventually result in a permanent fault in the same phase. In order to locate such incipient cable faults, a robust yet practical algorithm is developed taking into account the fault arc voltage. The algorithm is implemented in the time-domain and utilizes power quality monitor data to estimate the distance to the fault in terms of the line impedance. It can be applied to locate both sub-cycle as well as permanent faults. The proposed algorithm is evaluated and proved out using field data collected from utility distribution circuits. Furthermore, this algorithm is extended to locate evolving faults on overhead distribution lines. Evolving faults are faults beginning in one phase of a distribution circuit and spreading to another phase after a few cycles. The algorithm is divided into two parts, namely, the single line-to-ground portion of the fault and the line-to-line-to-ground portion of the fault. For the single line-to-ground portion of the fault, the distance to the fault is estimated in terms of the loop or self-reactance between the monitor and the fault. On the other hand, for the line-to-line-to-ground and line-to-line portion of the fault the distance is estimated in terms of the positive-sequence reactance. The secondary focus of fault management in AC distribution systems is on identifying fault cause employing voltage and current waveform data as well as meteorological information. As the first step, unique characteristics of cable faults are examined along with methods to identify such faults with suitable accuracy. These characteristics are also used to distinguish underground cable faults from other overhead distribution line faults. The overhead line faults include tree contact, animal contact and lightning induced faults. Waveform signature analysis, wavelet transforms and arc voltages during the fault event are used for fault cause identification and classification. A statistical based classification methodology to identify fault cause is developed by utilizing promising characteristics. Unlike the AC system infrastructure which is already in place, the DC system considered in this document is that of a notional electric ship. The nature of DC current, with the absence of a current zero as well as the presence of power electronic devices influencing the current behavior, makes interrupting DC fault currents challenging. As a part of this research an innovative DC fault interruption scheme is proposed for rectifier- fed MVDC systems. ▼ Society’s dependence on electronic and electrical systems has increased rapidly over the past few decades, and people are relying more and more on these gadgets in their daily life because of the efficiency in operation which these systems can offer. This has revolutionized many areas of electrical and electronics engineering including power sector, telecommunication sector, transportation and many other allied areas. With progress in time, the sophistication in the systems also increased. Also as the systems size reduced from micro level to nano level, the compactness of the systems increased. This paved the way for development in the digital electronics leading to new and efficient IC 0s that came into existence. Power sector also faced a resurge in its technology. Most of the analog meters are now replaced by digital meters. The increased sophistication and compactness in the digital system technology made it susceptible to electromagnetic interference especially from High Power Electromagnetic Sources. Communication, data processing, sensors, and similar electronic devices are vital parts of the modern technological environment. Damage or failures in these devices could lead to technical or financial disasters as well as injuries or the loss of life. Electromagnetic Interference (EMI) can be explained as any malicious generation of electromagnetic energy introducing noise or signals into electric and electronic systems, thus disrupting, confusing or damaging these systems. The disturbance may interrupt, obstruct, or otherwise degrade or limit the effective performance of the circuit. These effects can range from a simple degradation of data to a total loss of data. The source may be any object, artificial or natural, that carries rapidly changing electrical currents, such as an electrical circuit. The sources of electromagnetic interference can be either unintentional or intentional. The sources producing electromagnetic interference can be of different power levels, different frequency of operation and of different field strength. One such classification of these sources are the High Power Electromagnetic Sources (HPEM) High Power Electromagnetic environment refers to sources producing very high peak electromagnetic fields at very high power levels. These power levels coupled with the extremely high magnitude of the fields are sufficient to cause disastrous effects on the electrical and electronic systems. There has been a lot of developments in the field of the source technology of HPEM sources so that they are now one of the strongest sources of electromagnetic interference. A busca por suprimentos elétricos com qualidade, segurança e confiabilidade, constitui-se num dos problemas mais relevantes na atualidade. Neste cenário encontrase a questão das descontinuidades não programadas devido à ocorrência de falhas em dispositivos diversos, dentre os quais os cabos elétricos isolados. Focando tais componentes e reconhecendo que os mesmos constituem-se numa das principais fontes responsáveis pelas interrupções intempestivas nas instalações, esta tese encontra-se direcionada a investigações com vistas ao estabelecimento de estratégias e mecanismos que, de forma preditiva, possam indicar o estado de degradação da isolação dos cabos. No que tange a natureza dos fenômenos que podem comprometer a vida útil desses componentes ressaltam-se as manifestações das denominadas arborescências (water trees), as quais podem causar danos ao material dielétrico e, por conseguinte, a interrupção do suprimento de energia elétrica. Neste contexto, o presente trabalho se propõe a explorar uma técnica de análise do fenômeno da arborescência, a qual tem por meta a extração de um novo indicador do estado operacional dos cabos. Tal parâmetro de desempenho é aqui denominado por Coeficiente de Não Linearidade e, em consonância com o conceito desta grandeza, expressa o grau de correspondência entre as tensões e correntes de fuga determinadas para um dado trecho de cabo. O fundamento da proposição se apoia em que tais variáveis, sob a ação da degradação em foco, caracterizam um elemento não linear.

The search for electrical supplies, which offer quality, safety and reliability, is a challenging question that is still ever relevant in actuality. It is within this scenario that one finds the question surrounding non-programmed discontinuities, which are in themselves due to failures in numerous electrical devices encountered on the market today, within which isolated electric cables can be found. With the focus on such components, as it is recognized that they are in greater part responsible for the untimely interruptions that occur in installations, this thesis aligns itself towards the investigation with the view of establishing strategies and mechanisms, which in a predictive manner are capable of indicating the state of degradation present in a cables isolation. Regarding the nature of the phenomena that may affect the useful working life of these components the authors emphasize the manifestations of socalled water- trees, which can cause damage to the dielectric material and as a result therefore cause the interruption of the electricity supply. It is within this context that the present thesis proposes the exploration of a technique for the analysis of such water-tree phenomena, which is aimed at extracting a new indicator concerning the operational status of the cables. Such a performance parameter is denominated as the non-linear coefficient and in line with the concept of such a magnitude, expresses the degree of correspondence between the voltages and leakage currents determined for a given stretch of cable.…

▼ O presente trabalho apresenta uma abordagem estendida para o diagnóstico de faltas em sistemas subterrâneos de distribuição de energia. O esquema proposto desenvolve modificações às técnicas de localização de defeitos em sistemas de distribuição aéreos baseadas no cálculo da impedância aparente, adaptando-as para a aplicação em alimentadores primários de topologia subterrânea. Sistemas subterrâneos estão associados à alta confiabilidade, com índices reduzidos de interrupção devido a suas características construtivas, que impedem a ocorrência de perturbações devido a fenômenos climáticos, mecânicos ou humanos. No entanto, as falhas em cabos subterrâneos são tipicamente permanentes, exigindo a substituição da seção de linha defeituosa para o restabelecimento do sistema. De forma distinta às redes aéreas, onde a localização de defeitos pode ser realizada por meio de inspeções visuais, a topologia subterrânea impossibilita a utilização desta abordagem. Embora o processo de digitalização dos esquemas de proteção de alimentadores primários tenha incentivado o desenvolvimento de inúmeras metodologias para a localização de defeitos em redes de distribuição aéreas, características típicas de redes de distribuição subterrâneas não foram contempladas. Nestes sistemas, a aplicação das técnicas desenvolvidas para sistemas aéreos resulta em estimativas errôneas da distância da falta. O esquema proposto visa a superar esta deficiência dos algoritmos de localização tradicionais, adaptando-os às características típicas de redes de distribuição subterrâneas. A formulação desenvolvida se baseia no cálculo da impedância aparente, o qual poderá ser incorporado como sub-rotina de relés de proteção de arquitetura digital. Além de disponibilizar a estimativa da distância da falta, o esquema de localização de defeitos proposto obtém uma estimativa das resistências de falta associadas à perturbação. A metodologia utiliza como dados de entrada os sinais de tensão e corrente referentes aos períodos de pré-falta e durante a perturbação, e propõe uma compensação da componente capacitiva, característica típica e não-desprezível de cabos subterrâneos. De modo a contemplar a existência de ramificações laterais, o esquema de localização propõe a utilização de sistemas radiais equivalentes, determinados a partir de rotinas de fluxo de potência trifásico. Tendo em vista o comportamento randômico do carregamento em sistemas de distribuição, a metodologia propõe, ainda, uma análise do perfil de carga durante o período pré-falta. Para possibilitar uma análise da eficiência do método proposto, testes comparativos com uma técnica de localização de defeitos para redes de distribuição de topologia aérea recentemente proposta foram realizados. De modo a validar o esquema de localização de defeitos proposto, foram executadas inúmeras simulações computacionais a partir de dados reais de um alimentador subterrâneo.
