1. Crawford, Shanye. Cultural transvestism in the works of Catalina de Erauso and Mayra Santos-Febres.

Degree: 2014, University of Georgia

La historia de la Monja Alférez is the autobiography of Catalina de Erauso, a Basque woman whose vital options under the rigid norms of the 17th century are the convent or marriage. Written by Mayra Santos-Febres, Sirena Selena vestida de pena is a contemporary novel about a young boy whose femininity makes him sexually vulnerable. Both characters overcome their peripheral sexual identities by way of transvestism. The transvestite’s sexuality functions as a “social and cultural construct [whose] sexual asymmetry, as a cultural construction, can be altered” (Frese xi). In spite of their deliberate reconstruction, few studies overcome the transvestite’s sexual prescription. The purpose of this thesis is to amplify what seems to be the restricted dialogue of transvestism. The transvestite’s literary reconstruction reveals an understated social and political value. Transvestism “is more than an individual experience of perversion or deviance, […] it is therefore an informative and interesting ingredient of the iconography of gender” (Suthrell 26).

"Throughout time there have been long studies about the sea and all the animals that live there. However, there are expressive qualities in a part of the sea where each animal coexists and adapts to changes in light, and that is why they come to have qualities such as being able to shine, mimic and change color from stimuli. These qualities are what we want to highlight by means of a material capable of representing animals such as jellyfish, corals, octopuses and giant clams, who are representatives of such properties. Throughout the experimentation the leather became a fundamental material, since it fulfills a series of characteristics that allow to reach to determine shines and iridescent tonalities through processes that grant the leather to be another skin. In this way, the material becomes expressive medium for users who want to stand out, leave the established and be able to express their personal tastes and interests in a better way." – Tomado del Formato de Documento de Grado. 3. Sanchez Prada , Laura Marcela.

Advisors/Committee Members: Agudelo Bernal Carolina (advisor).
