本論文は、18世紀イギリスを代表する美学者にして政治哲学者たるエドマンド・バークEdmund Burke(1729-1797)の美学思想の全貌を、5章に分けて論じるものである。「序」において、著者は日本におけるバーク思想受容にふたつのバイアスがあったことを指摘する。ひとつはイデオロギー的な色彩のもとでバークが受容されたことである。明治におけるバークの紹介者たちが、「君主統治」をめざす明治の国策に寄与する保守思想という観点からバークを受容した、というのである。次に、バークの美学は常にカントの批判哲学の前段階としてみなされ、バーク思想の面目がこのレッテルに隠されてきた、ということである。かくして著者は、バーク思想をこのようなバイアスから解き放ち、とりわけその美学思想をその本来の姿において取り出すことを目標として掲げる。第1章は、著者が自らバークの揺籃の地・アイルランドに足を運んで、その伝記にかかわる実地調査を行ったことをふまえて、バークに関する従来の伝記を詳細に検討する部分である。これまで定説になっていた理解も、意外に実証的な裏付けがないことが論証され、伝記作者の側にあるアングロ=アイリッシュの確立という意識が、バークの「虚像」を作り上げてきたことが指摘される。第2章はバークの美学思想の主著となる「崇高と美」のテキストの検討を行い、まずはバークの中にある「視覚中心主義」ともいうべき傾向を指摘する。しかし、その傾向とともに、バークの崇高論が「触覚」と結びついた感情であることも指摘する。それは、「崇高」を得るために「苦の除去」による歓喜が必要だということを意味し、その精神性のゆえに、「崇高」が「美」よりも優位に位置づけられるという。なお、この第2章には「付論」として、ジンメルの「山岳美学」が論じられ、そこではカント美学への間接的批判の観点も述べられる。第3章は、バークの「優美」概念にみる感覚主義の傾向を、同時代の風俗画家ウイリアム・ホガースの美学書「美の分析」を通して読み解く。これはバーク美学を、18世紀イギリス社会で醸成されていた美意識との関連で見ようとする意図を持つ。第4章は、バークの「崇高と美」を「詩画比較論」という観点から読み解くとともに、その崇高論を、古典主義からの脱却の前触れないしロマン主義の黎明と位置づけることを試みる。ここでも、「付論」として、夏目漱石の詩画比較論が引きあいに出される。それは、「詩画比較論」という観点を、当時のグローバルな芸術状況のなかで理解するという意図を含んでいる。しかしまた、漱石のバーク理解もまた不十分であったことを、著者は指摘する。最後の第5章は、バークの演劇論草稿に着目し、このテキストの成立史にまで踏み込んでバークの演劇、特に「喜劇」の見方を考察する。そして、この作品が「崇高」の見方においてバークの「崇高と美」のそれと異なること、後の「省察」への過渡期にあること、等を取り出す。
