▼ The Cotonou Agreement introduces new fundamental principles with respect to trade between the European Union and African, Caribbean and Pacific (ACP) countries relative to the Lome Convention: in particular non-reciprocal preferential market access for ACP economies will only last until 1 January 2008. After that date, it will be replaced by a string of Economic Partnership Agreements (EPA) meant to progressively liberalise trade in a reciprocal way. The progressive removal of barriers to trade is expected to result in the establishment of Free Trade Agreements between the EU and ACP regional groups in accordance with the relevant WTO rules and help further existing regional integration efforts among the ACP. Most discussions of economic development in Africa focus on regional integration as an important element. From the first post-colonial meetings, African leaders emphasised regional integration as a key element of their strategies. In the most recent African plan for economic development, the New Partnership for Africa's Development (NEPAD), regional and sub regional approaches to development are again a key element. The plan sees the small size of countries, low incomes, and consequently limited markets as a limit to economies of scale, thus denying attractive returns to investors and in so doing constraining the diversification of production and exports. This is the key reason for pooling resources in order to enhance regional economic integration. The decision by Botswana, Lesotho and Swaziland to sign the interim EPA came in the result of SACU's failure to negotiate as a bloc with a view to sign the EPA. In this research, the following statistical techniques were applied: t-test, f-test, regression analysis and its forecasts model for seven Southern African Development Community- Economic Partnership Agreement (SADC EPA) group trading with the European Union, is used to simulate the opportunities and benefits of EPAs for countries of the SADC region. Simulation results show that EPAs with the EU are welfare-enhancing for SADC overall, leading also to substantive increases in real GDP. For most countries further gains may arise from intra-SADC liberalization.

▼ Migration is of considerable importance to Kenya especially in advancing regional integration in East Africa. Migration policies have for a long time been associated with movement of people, labor and capital from one sovereign state to another. The policies have a great impact and influence on integration both at social level, political level and in economic spheres. It is the soundness of these policies that dictate how the integration process is achieved. The research examines, the role played by migration Policies in Promoting Regional Economic Integration particularly, focusing on policies enacted by the government of Kenya and how they influence regional economic growth and development. The research argues that, although significant progress have been made by the Kenyan government, through implementing migration policies that have facilitated regional economic growth and development in EA, many challenges remain. These challenges encountered by the government of Kenya in promoting regional economic integration in EA includes; the Kenya’s insecure, porous, unmanned and difficult terrain on and along borders resulting in difficult, ineffective control of entry and exit of persons, inadequate legislative and policy framework and weak enforcement of existing regulations. Thus, there is need to create a mechanism for promoting migration issues which could act as a catalyst for economic development in the region and at the continental level. This research analyzes the role of migration policies in Kenya in promoting regional integration in East Africa. Firstly, the research examines the significance and economic impact of migration into East Africa and capacity of Kenya’s migration policies in advancing regional economic integration. Secondly, the research highlights the various regional integration arrangements which are part and parcel of the present global economic order and specifically focusing, on EAC which have recorded a tremendous achievement in enhancing trade and development in the region. The general objective of this research is to examine the role of migration policies in Kenya in promoting regional economic integration in East Africa. The research design used in this study is descriptive and explorative research. The study involved mostly the use of open-ended questions for the primary data collection. The research site in this study is Kenya. For the purpose of this study, the target population is 120 respondents who included; civil servants, business entrepreneurs, custom officials, immigration official, civilians and academicians operating in Kenya. Purposive sampling approach will be used to ensure that reasonable representative sample is picked for the groups. A number of data collections methods will be used in this study and this includes an open ended questionnaire for the key respondents. Secondary data will also be used in addition to primary data.

▼ The factor determinants of industry and investment location patterns in transition economies can be expected to differ from those frequently observed in developed countries. Historically, centrally planned economies have suffered from inefficient industrial policies that are generally assumed to have had distortive effects on spatial location of industry. The process of economic transition and regional integration that followed the demise of socialist structures is assumed to have subsequently affected the geographical distribution of economic activities within and between countries of the region. Given the above this thesis capitalises on the quasi-natural experiment setting to further explore industry and investment location decisions in transition economies. In particular, the research presented here follows three main objectives. First, it intends to provide a comprehensive picture of changes in industry location patterns over time. Second, it aims to contribute to the debate on factor determinants of industry location at various levels of spatial aggregation. Third, it seeks to explore location determinants of foreign direct investors in particular, given their pivotal role for economic development of transition economies. In all instances, the research is geared towards a better understanding of the role of institutional factors, such as reforms and policies, in affecting distribution of economic activity across space. Thus, the work conducted qualifies as a further contribution to the analysis of structural changes that have affected the economies under examination. In broad terms, the findings presented here point towards significant changes in spatial location patterns of industry and investments that are leading to increased polarisation of economic landscape over time. Nonetheless, we find evidence that certain institutional factors qualify as viable policy levers, thereby providing ample scope for policy makers to impact existing location patterns of economic activity. ▼ The thesis is composed of the following three distinct papers. 1.Banks and Development: Jewish Communities in the Italian Renaissance and Current Economic Performance Do banks affect long-term economic performance? I answer this question by relying on an historical development that occurred in Italian cities during the 15th century. A sudden change in the Catholic doctrine had driven the Jews toward money lending. Cities that were hosting Jewish communities developed complex banking institutions for two reasons: first, the Jews were the only people in Italy allowed to lend for a profit; second the Franciscan reaction to Jewish usury led to the creation of charity lending institutions that evolved into many of the current Italian banks. Using Jewish demography in 1450 as an instrument, I estimate large effects of current banking development on the income-per-capita of Italian cities. Additional firm-level analyses suggest that well-functioning local banks exert large effects on aggregate productivity by reallocating resources toward more efficient firms. Controlling for province effects, using additional historical data on Jewish demography and exploiting the expulsion of the Jews from the Spanish territories in Italy in 1541, I argue that my results are not driven by omitted institutional, cultural and geographical characteristics. In particular, I show that the difference in current income between cities that hosted Jewish communities and cities that did not exists only in those regions that were not Spanish territories in the 16th century. These difference-in-difference estimates suggest that the Jewish Diaspora can explain at least 10% of the current income gap between Northern and Southern Italy. 2. Contract Incompleteness, Globalization and Vertical Structure: an Empirical Analysis This paper studies the effects of international openness and contracting institutions on vertical integration. It first derives a number of predictions regarding the interactions between trade barriers, contracting costs, technology intensity, and the extent of vertical integration from a simple model with incomplete contracts. Then it investigates these predictions using a new dataset of over 14000 firms from 45 developing countries. Consistent with theory, the effect of technology intensity of domestic producers on their likelihood to vertically integrate is decreasing in the quality of domestic contracting institutions and in international openness. Contract enforcing costs are particularly high in developing countries and their effects on the vertical structure of technological intensive firms may have significant welfare costs. If improving domestic contracting institutions is not feasible an equivalent solution is to increase openness to international trade. This would discipline domestic suppliers reducing the need for vertical integration. 3. ▼ Financial integration is often perceived to lead to convergence of asset prices, as well as higher comovements across countries, with the idea that the dependence on world factors should increase as markets integrate. This dissertation focuses on analyzing how integration has changed over time in developed and, especially, emerging markets. In particular, the chapters tackle different aspects of how integration has changed over time and the relevance of particular global factors in pricing. In Chapter 1, I study the link between globalization and asset returns. Here, I provide a comprehensive analysis of the impact of economic and financial globalization on asset return comovements over the past 35 years. The globalization indicators draw a distinction between de jure openness that results from changes in the regulatory environment and de facto or realized openness, as well as between capital market restrictions across different asset classes. Although globalization has trended positively for most of the sample, the global financial crisis and its aftermath have provided new headwinds. Equity, bond, and foreign exchange returns often have different responses to globalization. I generally find weak evidence of comovement measures reacting to globalization and often find other economic factors to be equally or more important determinants. In Chapter 2, I analyze variance risk in global markets. Innovations in volatility constitute a potentially important asset pricing risk factor that can be easily tested through the return on variance swaps. I characterize the exposure of the returns on three asset classes (equities, bonds and currencies) in all regions of the world to United States based equity variance risk. I explore the implications for global risk premiums and asset return comovements using both developed and emerging markets. I first find that regional portfolios across all three asset classes and practically all countries exhibit negative loadings with respect to the variance risk factor. This exposure is not only statistically but also economically significant representing for most assets we consider around 50% of the global risk premiums implied by a simple three-factor model with global equity, bond, and variance risks. Second, this simple three-factor model also explains a substantive fraction of the comovements between international assets, but the fit is best for international equity correlations and is worse for currency returns and across asset correlations. In Chapter 3, I study the link between time-varying integration and asset pricing. Emerging markets are subject to constant integration shocks, which can make markets more integrated or more segmented. Changes in integration have dynamic effects that are difficult to accommodate in valuation models, as both time-varying betas and risk premium are needed to capture the direct and indirect effects of changes in integration on dividend yields. Nearly fifty years have passed since the appearance of the Optimum Currency Area’s theory (OCA) and undoubtedly, up today, it is considered to be a substantial component of the International Macroeconomic Analysis and of a wide discussion about the monetary integration. In particular, the integration is not only a multi functional concept and procedure but also an economic, social, political and institutional international phenomenon of the structures of the financial system and generally of the global economic establishment, which has been prevailed since the ancient years, and contributes - among others to the increase of the countries’ prosperity through the development of strong financial bonds and stable multilateral relations, in the frame of countries with similar socio-economic system. Undeniably, integration is a determined economic process of a group of countries which are struggling to increase their level of prosperity by developing strong and stable bonds towards the interest of the countries’ economies which were previously independent, through the configuration of a common strategy. The EU as a product of the unification process in the frame of the global economic system is a unique institutional construction which is based on a Monetary Union. The Optimum Currency Area’s theory has been considered for a long time not only an issue of significant academic research but also a controversial issue, as the EU could be transformed into OCA after the beginning of monetary union, even though it was not OCA before. Therefore, the properties of OCA can be fulfilled ex post, raising in that way greater expectations regarding the reinforcement of economic and trade integration.

Σχεδόν πενήντα χρόνια έχουν περάσει από την εμφάνιση της θεωρίας των Άριστων Νομισματικών Περιοχών (ΑΝΠ) και αδιαμφισβήτητα, μέχρι και σήμερα αποτελεί βασικό συστατικό της Διεθνούς Μακροοικονομικής Ανάλυσης και της ευρείας συζήτησης για τη νομισματική ολοκλήρωση. ▼ The dissertation examines the role the Southern African Development Community (SADC) and the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) can play in facilitating the political and economic convergence of the African Union (AU) member states. The developmental challenges facing Africa in spite of its wealth of human and natural resources is poignant. The genesis of this problem can be traced to the history of colonialism and the wave of independence in the continent in the late 1950s. Arguments have been put forward to suggest that one of the most viable ways of promoting Africa’s development is by developing and promoting intra-continental trade which can be possible through continental integration. The specific areas reviewed are regional stability and how intra-regional trade and investment is used to promote economic convergence. Africa's need for political and economic integration at a continental level is further sustained by the assumption that neocolonialism can be blamed for the weakness of structures in African states. Some scholars agree on the idea that regionalisation is often seen to offer a possibility to respond to the challenges of globalization. This impact nevertheless is dependent on the relation between globalisation and regional sentiment. Regional integration implies a form of interdependence among nation-states. Such interdependence leads to an establishment of regional integration arrangements between sovereign states within a geographical space. These agreements are shaped formally and there is a commitment to work together in order to realise political and socio-economic benefits. This study maintains that in order to achieve effective integration of the continent, Nigeria and South Africa as case studies, as continental giants have a key role to play to this end and as members of ECOWAS and SADC respectively. It is argued here that both the SADC and ECOWAS as sub-continental blocks have made some notable and commendable progress in developing policies for trade liberalization and economic integration, this, however, is not enough as such policies are also pertinent at a continental level. The study found that SADC and ECOWAS as regional blocks can play a role in aiding the continent to achieve a trade liberalization to achieve continental economic development. ▼ This research dissertation presents the impact of economic size, market size and exchange rate on South Africa’s trade flows with the European Union under the Trade Development and Cooperation Agreement (TDCA). The Big Five EU members are used to represent the EU trading bloc. The research also examines the effects of economic size, market size and ex-change rate on South African trade flows with members of the Southern African Customs Union and of the European Union in what is called the European Union-Southern African Development Community Economic Partnership Agreement (EU-SADC EPA). The research employs comparative analysis aimed at identifying the differences in the effects of market size, economic size and exchange rate on South Africa’s trade flows with these two trading blocs. The study exploits panel data on international trade of South Africa over the period 2000-’16. A gravity model of trade is used to identify the effect of these three variables on South Africa’s trade flows. The empirical analysis relies on a panel data econometrics framework as an estimation technique for the gravity model of trade between South Africa and the Big Five EU members. This shows the outcomes of the effects of economic size, market size and exchange rate on the trade flows of South Africa in the TDCA. The same technique is applied to estimate the effects of economic size, market size and exchange rate to trade flows of South Africa with the Big Five EU members as well as the other SACU members representing the SADC-EU EPA. In the panel data approach, three models are adopted. These are pooled OLS, fixed effects and random effects that can be estimated. The Hausman tests shows that the random effect is appropriate in the TDCA gravity function and the results indicate a positive relationship be-tween South Africa’s economic/market size and South Africa’s trade flows in the TDCA. In the EU-SADC EPA, the Hausman tests indicated that the fixed effect models are appropriate and the results show a positive relationship between economic size and market size with South Africa’s trade flows in the EU-SADC EPA. However, in the TDCA, the random effect model shows that exchange rate and the trading partner’s market size have a negative outcome on South Africa trade flows. The fixed effect model shows a negative relationship between the exchange rate and South Africa’s trade flows in the EU-SADC EPA. The results also show that it is better for South Africa to trade in the EU-SADC EPA than to remain in the TDCA. This is because the outcomes of economic and market size on South Africa’s trade flows are greater in the EU-SADC EPA than in the TDCA. On the other hand the negative effect of the exchange rate on South Africa’s trade flows is less in the EU-SADC EPA than in the TDCA. The research recommends that policy-makers select trading partners based on the sizes of their markets and economies.

▼ The dissertation examines the role the Southern African Development Community (SADC) and the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) can play in facilitating the political and economic convergence of the African Union (AU) member states. The developmental challenges facing Africa in spite of its wealth of human and natural resources is poignant. The genesis of this problem can be traced to the history of colonialism and the wave of independence in the continent in the late 1950s. Arguments have been put forward to suggest that one of the most viable ways of promoting Africa’s development is by developing and promoting intra-continental trade which can be possible through continental integration. The specific areas reviewed are regional stability and how intra-regional trade and investment is used to promote economic convergence. Africa's need for political and economic integration at a continental level is further sustained by the assumption that neocolonialism can be blamed for the weakness of structures in African states. Some scholars agree on the idea that regionalisation is often seen to offer a possibility to respond to the challenges of globalization. This impact nevertheless is dependent on the relation between globalisation and regional sentiment. Regional integration implies a form of interdependence among nation-states. Such interdependence leads to an establishment of regional integration arrangements between sovereign states within a geographical space. These agreements are shaped formally and there is a commitment to work together in order to realise political and socio-economic benefits. This study maintains that in order to achieve effective integration of the continent, Nigeria and South Africa as case studies, as continental giants have a key role to play to this end and as members of ECOWAS and SADC respectively. It is argued here that both the SADC and ECOWAS as sub-continental blocks have made some notable and commendable progress in developing policies for trade liberalization and economic integration, this, however, is not enough as such policies are also pertinent at a continental level. The study found that SADC and ECOWAS as regional blocks can play a role in aiding the continent to achieve a trade liberalization to achieve continental economic development. ▼ This study explores and examines the challenges of regional integration in the sub region of Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD). Political and Economic integration has been part of African strategy to overcome fragmentation and improve the continent‟s position in the global political economy. Regional Economic Communities have been part of this and there are more such efforts in Africa than other continents. One of these, Intergovernmental Authority on Development was initiated in 1986 to coordinate efforts at combating drought and desertification and Reorganized in 1996, it has since been more active in managing regional conflicts. The paper uses the IGAD region as a case study to argue that there are more political and economic integration. In continental and regional perspectives there seem to be strong evidence that political and economic integration are close related, these include Neo-functionalism, Intergovernmentalism,Custom Union theory, Optimal Currency theory, Fiscal federalism and International Political Economy respectively. The study also discusses pre-conditions that are necessary to regional integration such as diversity in production, adequate infrastructure, political will, domestic peace, robust and strong private sector, strong market pressure and mutual trust among member countries and challenges for regional integration, including lack of supra nationalism and political will, overlapping membership, distrust among membership, lack of complementarities and poor infrastructure. The appraisal of this study reveals the challenges of IGAD region. The major challenges are political and security (lack of supra nationalism, lack of political will, security), structural challenges (weak institution, over lapping membership, lack of a proper managing of relations among member states) economic and social challenges (poverty, lack of complementarities, inadequate infrastructure, fast growth of population, endemic diseases and HIV/AIDS), problems on human and resources (lack of enough man power and finance). In conclusion the regional integration process in the IGAD region is still at lower level. Thus, this study stresses that if actual and sustainable regional integration is to advance, IGAD needs further agreements to implement and achieve their goal, and it needs synchronization of national efforts to improve agricultural production, bring the region‟s conflicts under control and need to reduce it. ▼ The integration is a process of gradual rapprochement of economies of two or more countries as a result of removing barriers of the movement of goods and services which does not happen overnight and take several decades to proceed. Within this time the states are gradually moving from entering into Free Trade Agreements establishing free trade area to signing the Treaties elevating the integration to the level of economic or political union. It turns out that the regional integration pursues a goal of gaining important benefits for states’ economic development, improvement of the living conditions of their populations, allows them to pursue their social and political interests and to strengthen their international positions. However, it is needed to note that it has some side effects as mismanagement of resources, the partial loss of national sovereignty and the separation of the integration region from the other world which the states should be aware of in developing the regional integration. In is true to say that in different regions the integration take place in different economic and political conditions making the process, the bodies, the purposes and the functions of integration unique and each region has different problems to move the integration on. Thus, in Asia it is common spread fears that the institutions will eventually bind the member states to give up sovereignty in important policy –making areas. The Eurasian integration in this respect is a recently appeared essence, which need time to become fully efficient. The problem of integration in the Latin America’s region is that the countries of the continent for many years have been suffered from the strong fragmentation due to a number of reasons. African problem concerned the necessity to establish an effective integration able to resolve African problems like extreme poverty, endemic wars, HIV and AIDS, malaria and ebola. Thus, it is needed to point out that today the European Union comparing to the other regional economic integration is the most united and advances integration form as only in the EU, economic integration is complemented by cooperation in the field of justice and internal affairs, in foreign policy and security policy showing the great results and efficiency. Thus, it is for the other regions to gradually move and further develop the integration no matter following the EU model or developing their own specific examples. However, it is important in pursuit of integration not to forget that the main goals of integration is not just to maximize cohesion and to approach the “ideal” of a huge state, but to maximize utility for participants - both for states and for citizens. ▼ This thesis examines and analyses the current nature of intra-regional trade between member states of the proposed Tripartite Free Trade Area in order to contribute to an understanding of the potential for intra-regional trade within the region to increase. Trade Complementarity Indexes were used to determine how well the structures of the three founding blocs’ major imports and exports match. The results show that there is a high degree of trade complementarity in the trade of the top 5 major products traded between the regional groups. With the proposed TFTA in place, high trade complementarity could lead to increased trade between the regional groups. Trade Intensity Indexes were used to determine how intensively the three founding blocs trade with one another. Results from the indexes help determine the extent to which the blocs currently view each other as important trading partners and the implications of this for the proposed TFTA. Results show that EAC and SADC as well as EAC and COMESA viewed each other as significant trading partners while SADC and COMESA did not for the majority of the years from 2001 to 2018. With the TFTA in place, intra-regional trade could be strengthened among the members who currently trade intensively because tariffs between them would be progressively eliminated as required by the TFTA Agreement. Revealed Comparative Advantage Indexes were used to gain insights on whether member states have any comparative advantage in their top 5 exports. Results from the indexes were used to determine whether member states have comparative advantage in similar or dissimilar major exports and the implications of this for the proposed TFTA. Results show that member states have revealed comparative advantage in similar products and these products present opportunities for joint-production among member states as well as sectors for product development once the proposed TFTA is in place. Revealed Trade Barrier Indexes were used to gain insights into the extent of ease of market access into each regional bloc’s market. Results from the indexes indicate whether major products imported from each other receive possibly discriminatory or preferential treatment. The results indicate that the majority of the top 5 imports sourced from each region receive preferential treatment. This indicates that there is ease of market access for the top 5 imports sourced from each other and this could promote increased intra-regional trade among member states in these product categories because tariff and non-tariff barriers to trade will be progressively eliminated once the TFTA is in place.

It analyzes the new challenges of the right front to the global economy. It demonstrates that the exponential profit of the force of the economic power through the process of decentralization of the national economies, and the loss of autonomy legal politics and of the public authorities, offers new social paradigm to be regulated. It examines the concepts of people, territory and sovereignty, constituent elements of the State, ahead of the alterations of the new order world-wide economic politics and. It displays the philosophical, economic and legal aspects of the competition freedom. It deals with the enterprise activity as conscience a classroom that can provide, regulated for the right, sustainable economic development, but lead freely for the strategical rationality of the profit, it aggravates the social inequalities and it compromises the environment. Alert on the predatory exploration of the environment and the implications of jurisprudence. Each time of the legalist orders comments the existence of an incompatibility enters the production of specialized norms more, with the speed of change of the paradigm of the social relations, concluding that the procedural rigidity of the legal positivism faces a great challenge when taking care of the new requirements of the modern global society. It approaches the intervention of the State in the economic domain for the bias of the economic policy and for the legal instruments constitutional.
