▼ Asphaltene precipitation, flocculation, and deposition are vital problems that may cause serious damage to reservoirs, wells, and production facilities. Asphaltene precipitation may occur during primary depletion or acidizing jobs, as well as after the injection of rich gas or carbon dioxide. The organic deposition removal is considered a costly workover job with the current oil prices. The solvents that are usually used are toluene and xylene, which are considered carcinogenic and toxic chemicals. The use of dispersion to inhibit the organic deposition is essential and can be expensive, as it is required for the life of the well.
This project was aimed to find an alternative bio-oil dispersant that can be used as an
eco-
friendly and cost effective option. Coconut oil and andiroba oil were tested against chemical asphaltene dispersants to inhibit asphaltene in Kuwaiti crude oil. The effectiveness of the bio-oils was studied under reservoir temperature at 70°C and several concentration of the dispersants were tested to achieve optimum performance.
Acid induced asphaltene sludge is a well-known problem that can result in loss of the well in some cases, after acidizing an oil well. The majority of the development in the industry has been focused on controlling the iron concentration instead of stabilizing the asphaltene while interacting with the acid. The anti-sludge agent used is DBSA or it’s derivate.
A Kuwaiti crude oil was used in this study having an API of 38° and 2% asphaltene content. The crude oil was characterized by a variety of analytical techniques including: total acid and base numbers (TAN, TBN), saturates, aromatics, resins and asphaltene analysis (SARA), density, viscosity and elemental analysis. Indiana limestone and Carbon tan cores were used with average porosity of 16% and permeability ranges (9-30) md. X-ray diffraction (XRD) and scanning electron microscopy was used to analyze the mineral and clay content in the cores. Sludge tests were used to examine the acid and oil compatibility using a aging cell under 500 psi and 70°C. Coreflooding experiments under reservoir condition were done with the selected two acid systems, 15 wt. % HCl and chelating agent (GLDA). CT scans were done on the cores at dry, wet, oil-saturated and after acidizing and then were used to analyze the porosity profile within the core. The produced fluids were also analyzed by pH values of spent acid solutions.
This study provides a novel idea of using bio-oils as anti-sludge agent in matrix acidizing. The use of coconut oil with GLDA in matrix acidizing considered a 100% green stimulation system with high bio-degradability.
This study concluded that the use of dispersant can help reduce the asphaltene sludge and create better acid propagation through the core. The coconut oil gave a comparable performance to chemical dispersant in limestone acidizing with 15 wt. % HCl. Limestone acidizing with GLDA showed the coconut oil outperforming the chemical dispersant by reducing the injected pore volume needed to…

▼ The business plan with a marketing emphasis for an eyewear company provided the team with an intuitive learning experience. The project uncovered valuable information regarding online retailing as well as the use of different distribution channels to support overall operations. Our team held an initial meeting with the client to familiarize with the company's past and where the client sees the company in the future. This meeting unfolded details about operations in general and in specific previous and current marketing practices that have generated a boost in sales. Further discussion with the client demonstrated the need to expand and the desire to increase sales directly to final consumers, limiting business to business operations. The objective of this project was to develop a business plan with a heavy marketing emphasis to assist the client with further expansion while understanding current consumer behavior.
To collect primary data, the team designed and published a formal market research survey that was distributed to colleagues, friends and family members. The team also conducted secondary research by gathering useful information using the framework of Porter's five forces and completed the company's SWOT analysis. Due to the fact that this project focuses on the marketing aspect of the business, the framework of four P's was also adopted to better understand the competitors' product variety, pricing strategy, promotional activities and distribution channels.
My individual contribution to the project included attending meetings with the client, creating the team's timeline and schedule of deadlines and testing the market research survey. I undertook the company's strengths (SWOT analysis), the industry's threat of entry, power of suppliers and power of buyers (Porter's five forces) and the competitors' pricing strategy (Competitor Analysis). Finally, I played an essential role in determining a set of recommendations that were presented to the client to achieve their goal of improved sales figures, while adopting the client's chosen strategy.
The implementation plan was presented to the client as a recommended action plan that would be crucial for the company to execute to be able to achieve its goals and focus on the selected strategy. It was a pleasure to have had this opportunity to study more about online retailing. The team effectively used the knowledge and skills gathered to aid the business achieve its objective. The resulting findings and recommendations are proprietary to the client and shall remain confidential.

▼ A number of problems have served as motivators for
this study: Environmental deterioration as a risk to economic
facilitation; missed organisational green competitive
opportunities; South Africa's need as a developing country for the
growth of small, medium and micro-enterprises (SMMEs); and
information technologies as an aid for ecological and economical
problems. Accordingly, this research has aimed to suggest
environment-
friendly information technology policies that can be
implemented in South African SMMEs, engendering mutually beneficial
sustainability for the three domains (or contextual study elements)
‘Environment’, ‘Organisation’ and ‘Information Technology’. The
methodology used involves an interpretive research approach, a
literature survey based on document analyses, and an empirical
study based on green information technology expert interviews. In
collecting the data, the theory of three of the five Multiple
Perspectives Approach perspective types was applied; for the data
analysis, the Hierarchical and Signed components constituting the
Directed Graphing Method where applied. The output of this study
includes an explanation of the relationships that exist between the
study elements and that lead to mutually beneficial sustainability.
It also includes the identification of Key Sustainability Factors
for each of the research elements, as high level critical goals to
be achieved by green information technology policy developers in
pursuing mutually beneficial sustainability. Furthermore, the
output contains contextually consolidated Key Sustainability Factor
Enablers, to serve as policy recommendations for implementation by
green information technology practitioners toward ensuring mutually
beneficial sustainability; and, finally, a sample integration of
these Key Sustainability Factor Enablers, now referred to as
Conceptual Policy Views, such as may have been produced by typical
green information technology policy developers in selecting and
prioritising views for organisational utilisations. In answering
the main research question of this study, as well as providing its
key outcome, a conceptual framework has been produced which
comprises information technology policies that are supported to be
feasible for implementation as well as of mutual benefit in terms
of sustainability for the ‘Environment’, South African SMME
‘Organisations’ and ‘Information Technology’ itself. This provides
an ordered and related means of implementing information technology
policies, while also relating these policies to their respective
mutually beneficial Key Sustainability Factors. Strategic planning,
toward incorporating the conceptual framework into organisational
policy, is thus enabled. This study concludes with an evaluation of
its findings and execution, together with future research
recommendations.

Bacterial cellulose (BC) is a wellknown polymer of this family. Its main attractive properties are the biocompatibility, moldability, purity, crystallinity and fibrillar structure at the nanoscaled level. The production of such materials by microorganisms is an innovative procedure. In order to trigger this production procedure in our laboratories, the present thesis was the preliminary step to go through this huge micro-world. In the first step, we isolated cellulose producers from Lebanese vinegar. Kinetic studies were established to clarify the profile of the producer and to optimize cellulose production. The isolates were studied under different incubation temperatures in different microbiological media and at different carbon sources levels to determine optimal conditions for BC production. In the second step, cellulose producer was studied concerning bacterial phases and life cycles. Cells physiologies were clarified and mechanisms that accompany cellulose formation on the top of cultures were discussed. A mathematical model was set basing on Logistic equation to standardize the parameters. Then, cellulose yield was enhanced by different cells choc methods. Thermal choc was applied on cultures during earlier stages of incubation. Moreover, acids were used as doping agents to the culture media. In parallel, to satisfy the eco-friendly…

▼ Eco-labels impact consumers‟ likelihood to buy eco-labelled products and serve as a tool during the decision-making process that helps consumers make informed purchase choices. The textile industry is responsible for a large amount of pollution, but has started to follow a more holistic, eco-friendly approach. Information about their eco-friendliness is communicated to consumers via eco-labels. Consumers can influence the textile industry to include more eco-labelled textile products in their desired range of products, by buying and demanding eco-labelled textile products. However, international studies indicate that consumers do not understand textile eco-labels and the information that is found on these labels. A lack of understanding prevents consumers from including such products in their pre-purchase decision-making process. Yet some consumers, from developed and developing countries, are willing to buy eco-labelled products and pay more for such products. Limited research in this regard, within a South African context, is available hence, more research was required in this study field. Therefore, this study aimed to explore consumers‟ understanding and utilisation of textile eco-labels during pre-purchase decision-making.
The research for the study was done using a convenience and purposive sampling method with a quantitative structured online questionnaire for data collection purposes. Findings suggest that respondents were environmentally conscious, but only to some extent. Most respondents objectively understood textile eco-labelled products, but not textile eco-labels or organic label information regarding cotton production processes. Respondents indicated that they do not use textile eco-labels when making a pre-purchase decision, yet they somewhat recognised the need to buy eco-friendly textile products, because they are aware of environmental implications. Regarding the information on eco-labels, respondents searched for information surrounding the quality of eco-labelled textile products, followed by the care instructions and the credibility of the eco-label on the product. Finally, there was a segment of respondents who buy and utilise textile eco-labelled products, and are willing to pay a higher price for these products. The higher price was the main factor that prevented other respondents from buying eco-labelled textile products.
Consumers can benefit from education regarding environmental issues and how their purchasing choices can make a difference in protecting the environment. Furthermore, educating consumers about eco-labelled textile products might increase their awareness and utilisation of these products. In turn, this awareness about eco-labels might encourage consumers to include these kinds of products in their pre-purchase decision-making process. Additionally the industry can strive towards keeping eco-labelled products‟ prices relatively equal to regular product‟s prices to make it easier for consumers to choose between the different products, based on their environmental attributes…

▼ Taiwan is determined to reduce carbon dioxide emissions at least 30% before 2020, to respond United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), by making National Appropriate Mitigation Actions (NAMAs) and related Energy Acts. It seems a governance wave that set a formal institute target of reducing greenhouse gas emissions all over the world. Not only formal institute design, literature also suggests could influence corporate
eco-
friendly behavior by informal institute design such as stakeholder pressure. However, corporate
eco-
friendly behavior is various, including: carbon emission, product design, and corporate social responsibility. Previous studies either focus on policy discussion or single corporate
eco-
friendly behavior; seldom use causal model and experimental research by empirical data. This research combined institutional and stakeholder theory, proposed a causal influence model to discuss the influence factors of corporate
eco-
friendly behavior. In addition, research also examined both formal and informal institute pressure on corporate
eco-
friendly behavior by scenario questionnaire.
The results show that (1)stakeholder pressure has significant and positive impacts on environmental management technology; (2)the impacts of formal institute pressure influences on the organizational environment strategy further influences on corporate
eco-
friendly behavior; (3)organizational environment strategy has significant and positive impacts on corporate
eco-
friendly behavior; (4)fine, Energy Acts, and customer pressure are the most important influence factors on corporate
eco-
friendly behavior.

▼ Instead of developing easily degradable, and low-priced insecticides, we are
going after highly sophisticated chemicals. Here, an attempt is being made to develop
safer formulations of insecticides of botanical origin.
Different parts of the plants were chosen based on their use in countryside and
villages The dried plant materials were extracted with petroleum ether, and were
applied on Tribolium castaneum. The results were statistically analysed.
The active principles from Croton tigilium and Leea sambucina, the most
potential plants, were isolated using Column Chromatography, TLC, and Hydrolysis.
The isolated principles were analysed spectroscopically ( UV-Vis., IR, NMR,
and MS ) to identify their chemical nature. The active principles from Leea and
Croton were identified as a cholisterate derivative and a phorbol derivative
respectively.
In order to ascertain the environmental combatibility of the principles,
degradation by soil bacteria was studied.
The isolated principles were made into three type of formulations using
stabilizers .The formulations were applied on Snake gourd semilooper, Pulse beetle,
and mosquito larvae. Also the biocidal activity of the formulations was studied.
Both Leea derivative and Croton derivative could be formulated effectively
and were effective against a variety of pests. They are eco-friendly, as there is no
artificial chemicals involved.

▼ In this study, Random copolymers poly[(2-aminoehtyl
methacrylamide
hydrochloride)-st-(5-methacrylamido-1,2-benzoboroxole)-st-(N-isopropylacrylamide)]
(PAMN) and glycopolymer poly (2-lactobionamidoethylmethacrylamide)
(PLAEMA) with various molecular weights were synthesized via
conventional free radical polymerization method. The effect of
temperature, pH, molecular weight and polymer dosage on the kaolin
particle settling rate, turbidity of supernatant, mud-line
position, solid volume fraction of sediment, and solid content of
sediment were evaluated to determine the flocculation performance.
Temperature and pH responsive polymer PAMN was considered as the
most efficient flocculant as compared with poly[(2-aminoethyl
methacrylamide hydrochloride)-st-(N-isopropylacrylamide)] (PAN) and
Poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) (PNIPAAm). Furthermore, highly compact
sediment can be achieved through increasing pH to 11 due to the
cationic/anionic transfer property of PAMN. For the study of
PLAEMA, large molecular weight has been proved to possess the
positive effect on flocculating kaolin fine particles. The adhesive
force, polymer conformation, and other property characterization
were determined by several instruments, including surface forces
apparatus (SFA), atomic force microscopy (AFM), dynamic light
scattering (DLS), and gel permeation chromatography (GPC). Strong
adhesion was measured between mica surface and polymers in the case
of PAMN and high molecular weight PLAEMA, resulting from
benzoboroxole-hydroxyl complexation, electrostatic interaction,
hydrogen bonding and flexible polymer chains. The roughness change
of polymer coated mica surface is also an evidence of polymer
adsorption and aggregation, contributing to the enhanced
flocculation behavior. The results in this thesis provide insight
into the development of novel polymer flocculants and basic
interaction mechanisms between polymer flocculants and fine
particles.

▼ A problem exists that many
eco-
friendly products on the market today are not widely accepted by consumers. Three pilot experiments were conducted to examine a few causes of poor
eco-
friendly product acceptance. The first two experiments involved the testing of alternative products to disposable plastic water bottles. Two hypotheses were developed- the attitude hypothesis and the user activity hypothesis. The attitude hypothesis states that a person with a positive environmental attitude will lead to better
eco-
friendly product recommendation and rating, greater product uses, and a greater chance of continued use. The user activity hypothesis states that a product with difficult set-up or cleaning will lead to a worse product recommendation and rating, fewer product uses, and a smaller chance of continued use. Participants took home a product to test for one week and then returned to complete two surveys- a demographics survey and a product evaluation survey. These surveys measured variables such as environmental attitude, product recommendation and rating, number of uses, continued use, and many others.
The results of the experiments show a relation between environmental attitude and the participants’ future usage with the
eco-
friendly product. In addition, the data shows that difficulty of product set-up and cleaning relate to the users’ opinion of the product. Since this methodology of testing has not been documented before, the lessons learned from these pilot experiments will help to develop a framework for product testing with human ubjects. The third pilot experiment tests the design method of defaults, which may be a powerful tool when designing
eco-
friendly products. The theory behind the default option is that people typically choose the default setting on a product, regardless if it is the best option. This theory was tested with the use of automatic paper towel dispensers. The lengths of the paper towels that the machines dispensed were changed periodically and the paper towel usage was measured. The results from this experiment indicate that users obey the rule of defaults, unless their needs are not being met at an extreme level.

▼ In a world where information is critical to decision making, the search for information has been made easier by the ease of access to online platforms such as articles, reviews, statistics, videos, images and even social media. A growing trend and concern is green behaviour which has emerged from concerns about the sustainability and condition of the environment. A study of the content of available online information related to how consumers can be greener would be beneficial to marketers and businesses in the process of developing their strategies to address the needs of the green consumer. The objectives of this study were to determine the extent and content of the environmental information available online which is targeted at consumers and to identify who is providing the environmental information. The content of each website listed from the search engines was evaluated against criteria from a structured research questionnaire. The study was conducted in the form of a content analysis of three major search engines which were Google, Yahoo and Bing. The study found that recycling, reducing, green products and energy efficiency were the most prevelant solutions on the environmental information sites. Profit-orientated companies and educational institutions are the major providers of environmental information available online as they collectively contributed about 70% of the information available online. Businesses should align their products in such a way that they offer solutions to environmental challenges. This should further be translated and be visible in their product labels and websites. Green marketers should consider uploading environmental information which appeals to a child audience.

▼ Currently, there are environmental issues the world is facing which include global climate change, ozone depletion, pollution, high consumption of resources and increasing amounts of solid waste. Tourism is one of the largest industries and it is an important economic tool. However, it also has many negative effects on the environment. Hotels as one of the tourism industry’s component parts have a significant impact on the environment. From an environmental perspective, hotels consume a large amount of resources such as water and electricity as they make efforts to provide physical comfort to guests. In addition, hotels generate large quantities of waste, which is one of their most visible effects on the environment. Hotels also make a significant contribution to greenhouse gases which are a cause of concern due to the ozone layer depletion. Many hotel customers have become aware of the environmental damages and wasting of environmental resources caused by hotels and they now look for hotels that follow eco-friendly practices. This has brought increasing pressure on hotels to implement more green initiatives.
There is limited documented information on green management among hotels in South Africa and in Zimbabwe. While the number and range of impacts hotels have on the environment suggests an urgent need to address them, the environmental management initiatives in these hotels are scantly addressing these green issues and this study is the first to address these issues. The goal of the study was therefore to develop a green management framework for hotels in South Africa and Zimbabwe so that these developing countries may contribute significantly in mitigation of the negative environmental effects. To achieve this goal, two literature chapters addressed the issue of green management and how it can be implemented by hotels. A qualitative research was then carried out employing the case study strategy to collect data from hotel managers in South Africa and Zimbabwe (four in Zimbabwe and four in South Africa). Data was collected using personal interviews involving a direct meeting of the interviewer and the interviewee. Personal interviews were carried out in Zimbabwe. In South Africa, data was collected using telephone interviews. In both Zimbabwe and South Africa, data was recorded on a digital voice recorder. Data was later transcribed and then analysed using the content analysis method.
Some of the main findings of the study are that, while some perceptions of managers about the green management concept are consistent with a number of aspects emphasised in literature, some hotel managers do not fully understand or grasp what the concept of green management entails. This indicates that a gap exists between managers’ knowledge and what green management really means, at least according to literature. The study has also established that in most hotels, there is unavailability of green management policies, suggesting that there is a lack of knowledge about the importance of a green management policy amongst hotel…

▼ Sustainable consumption has become a crucial factor to consider for both consumers and manufacturing firms. Green marketing practices, or marketing activities aimed at decreasing the impact on the environment, have been incorporated into many business plans to combat old habits of wastefulness and pollution. One very popular method that has come to prominence over the recent years is eco-labeling of products and services. Eco-labels are logos that represent that a product or service has met standardized criteria set by a certifying organization and that it is deemed a sustainable option in its product category. The focus of this study will center-on well-known and established eco-labels in the Swedish market, namely the Swan, Bra Miljöval, KRAV, EU-Ecolabel and the Marine Stewardship Council eco-labels.
Eco-labels are tools for communication which can be used to facilitate the practice of sustainable consumption. However, there are many factors that influence the consumer’s ability to understand the message of the eco-label which in turn can affect their capacity to adopt the sustainable behavior. The purpose of this study is to determine if Swedish consumers understand the eco-label’s message and if this message affects their green purchasing. These results were related to message quality as defined by the International Standards Organization 14063 standard for environmental communication (2004 cited in Strömdahl, 2005, p. 15; Von Ahn & Wikström, 2005, p. 33-34) and other notable factors found from a literature review. The following research questions were answered:
• Do consumers understand the message of an eco-label?
o What are the factors related to understanding the eco-label?
• Do awareness and understanding affect purchase behavior of and eco-label?
o What are the factors related to the purchase of eco-labeled products?
A quantitative approach has been used in this research project and a survey has been administered at supermarkets in the Umeå area. To confirm the message of the eco-labels, a semi-structured interview was conducted with the issuing organizations prior to designing the questionnaire. A total of 152 responses were collected from the survey and analyzed with frequency distributions, independent sample t-tests and contingency tables where a significance level of chi-square of .05 or lower was required.
The results of the study indicate that customer understanding and purchase behavior varied by each eco-label. Message quality can have a significant impact on understanding of the eco-label. Also, other personal factors were related to understanding and purchase behavior with nationality giving evidence of the strongest relationship.

▼ To protect the hinterland, flood defences are often located on the border between water and land. This same border however is also an attractive place to live, which may hamper improvement of flood protections. Closing off a tidal (river) system, especially in case of little discharge, may in this case be a logical consideration. This would however result in the disappearance of tidal action, while ecological value in urban areas is already under pressure. Environmental organisations are representing the increasing voice and power of society and its cry for nature conservation. The Hollandsche IJssel is one of the side branches of the Dutch delta. It is a perfect case of the conflicting interests mentioned. The aim in this research was to design a hybrid barrier for this case that provides (1) the security of a close-off to the hinterland and (2) the openness of a surge barrier (tide and flow are possible) to nature and thus conserves this unique system. The core of this research is to come up with a preliminary design of a hybrid barrier that is appropriate from an ecological point of view. To do so, boundary conditions were distilled that ensure conservation of ecological value of the freshwater tidal river system. Focus was laid on the unique aspects of the ecosystem at hand. Ecological value is considered to be conserved if the hybrid barrier conserves the tidal range as much as possible (90 %) and if fish migration is still possible. The line of thought on how to take into account ecological value presented in this research could be used by others seeking to fully incorporate ecological value in their design. Several concepts and locations for the
eco-
friendly barrier are discussed. Furthermore, in order to increase the available intertidal area, a proposition is made to narrow the river. The proposed strategy consists of three aspects, namely (1) an
eco-
friendly barrier with pumping capacity, (2) river narrowing and (3) no dike reinforcements after implementation of the new barrier. Until the proposed strategy is implemented, dike reinforcements may still be necessary however. The proposed strategy was compared to the current or reference strategy. The reference strategy consists of three aspects, namely (1) improvement of the current barrier, (2) replacement of the barrier with a similar barrier in 2050, and (3) continuation of dike reinforcements. In both strategies the current barrier is replaced. It was found that for the proposed strategy, a single gate solution is not an option, hence multiple small gates are required. A single gate solution would lead to too high water levels in the Hollandsche IJssel. The final design consists of 31 square culverts with sides of 2.7 m. To maintain maximum tidal range pumps are required between 2105 and 2140 (depending on the severity of sea level rise). Therefore, a pump structure with 6 square inlets with sides of 3.7 m is included in the design. Approximately 90% of the original tidal amplitude is maintained and the available intertidal area almost triples.…

▼ The moving experience is a nightmare for most college students, who tend to move more than other groups of people. Heavy, large bulky furniture, clothes and many other items take a lot of time and energy to move. Moving typically involves removing items from the chest-of-drawers and closet, packing items in boxes, suitcases, bags and other containers and loading them in a vehicle and transporting them to a new location where the process is repeated. This is chaotic and time consuming. Another issue is that due to the limited storage space available in the typical dormitory or apartment a way to create more efficient clothes storage is needed.
Eco-
friendly materials should also be emphasized to build the product that be durable and last long. In this thesis design a new Nomadic Furniture Design for College Students is created that addresses five major design issues: functionality (i.e. storage convenience, etc.), enhanced form quality (aesthetics), flexibility, simplicity and durability (
eco-aspect) to promote long-term use. Existing dormitory furniture does not adequately address college students’ needs for clothes storage and moving frequency. This thesis explores design alternatives and makes suggestions for improvement.

▼ The rapid increase in the use of plastic materials in the recent years led to the
accumulation of extreme amounts of plastic waste. Thermoplastics such as PET,
PE, PP, PS and PVC as well as materials that derived from these are the type of
plastic most used and consequently create environmental problems.
Landfill, incineration and recycling remains the primary options for solid waste
management. One critical determinant of the acceptability of these options is the
different health risks associated with each.
The plastic waste that burnt and dumped in landfill sites can be recycled and
used for different purpose. This includes the use of waste plastic in construction
of asphalt road. By recycling waste plastic, it is possible to protect the
environment from contamination.
Using waste plastic in asphalt road construction as an aggregate binder is one of
the recent plastic waste approach. This will help us to avoid the environmental
pollution from open-air burning and landfill of plastic waste.
In this research the applicability of the waste plastic as a binder, together with
Bitumen has investigated, for this purpose, the plastic (Polyethylene
terephthalate ) and bitumen mix was checked for certain quality that needed to
be a good binder. The natural bitumen had modified by adding Polyethylene
Terephthalate (PET) in different percentage by weight of bitumen. The tests that
conducted on the modified bitumen quality are Ductility, Penetration, and
Softening point of the plastic modified bitumen mix. Also the load bearing
capacity of the modified bitumen asphalt (aggregate with modified bitumen mix),
had been tested.
The research had conducted the two methods of asphalt road making using
plastic waste.
After doing the quality test, the research identified what percentage by weight of
plastic that should be mixed with bitumen to give a good quality of modified
bitumen, accordingly 8% by weight in wet process and around 16% by weight of
Polyethylene Terephthalate(PET) in dry process were able to give good binding
property. This can enable us to recycle around 52.4 tons of PET waste (per
kilometer of road) that would have gone to landfill and/or to open air burning and
Incineration.

The cosmetic industry uses plants as sources of natural active ingredients. The extraction of theseactive ingredients requires selective extraction method such as molecularly imprinted polymers (MIP)technique. This thesis describes the development of MIP for the selective extraction of glucosamine, fructosazine and 2,5-déoxyfructosazine.In the first part, three approaches were developed to extract glucosamine by MIP technique: thecovalent approach, semi-covalent and noncovalent. For each approach, the various parametersinvolved in the synthesis of the MIP were optimized. The best results were obtained with a MIPsynthesized with a non-covalent ionic approach based on the complexation of glucosamine by asulfonic acid. The MIP exhibits higher performance than commercial media and extractions fromplants were performed. The potential for industrialization of the MIP was validated during initial testson a larger scale. In the second part, the simultaneous extraction of fructosazine and 2,5-déoxyfructosazine wasperformed following the development of a MIP synthesized using a covalent approach based on theformation of boronic esters. An original synthesis method is exposed since the templates were formedin situ during the polymerization. The MIP obtained showed good selectivity for each compound andallowed to separate and purify fructosazine…

▼ Oat hull is an abundantly available form of biomass in Canada, which is mostly used as low-value feed material. With high fibre content, it can be used in the production of industrial products by providing opportunity as an additive in the replacement of petroleum-based products. Moreover, bio-based plastics/ biodegradable polymers are gaining popularity, as reinforced matrices into natural fibres to produce biodegradable composites. Therefore, the objectives of this investigation were to develop biocomposite materials from cellulose and lignin which were post-hydrolysis products of oat hull using biodegradable polymers (polylactic acid (PLA) and polycaprolactone (PCL)) and to compare the physical and mechanical properties of formulated biocomposites with polypropylene (PP) biocomposites so that a low-cost and
eco-
friendly biomaterial can be produced. Further, the effect of an impact modifier was investigated to improve the impact properties of such biocomposites.
The oat hull biomass was cleaned and chemically pretreated to produce different kinds of fibres by dilute acid hydrolysis followed by delignification at different temperature conditions. The fibres resulting from pretreatment processes were AHB (acid-catalyzed hydrolysis by-product), CRB-30 and CRB-65 (cellulose-rich biofibre). Chemical analysis of fibres showed a reduction in hemi-cellulose and lignin content, with increased cellulose content.
Formulations with rates of at 15% and 30% AHB or CRB fibres of the total mass of biocomposites were tested. The effect of impact modifier at 15% inclusion rate was also investigated with polylactic acid- and polycaprolactone-based composites. A twin screw extruder and a compression molding machine were respectively used for compounding the formulations and product molding/fabrication. The performance of the composites in all formulations was finally assessed by measuring their physical and mechanical properties such as density, color measurement, water absorption, tensile strength, flexural strength and tensile-impact energy.
Fibre loading from 15% to 30% significantly affected the density and water absorption of the manufactured composites. The density of composites increased with addition of fibres; water absorption also increased with fibre addition in all formulations. Color analysis showed that products appeared darker in color because of addition of fibres. The results for the mechanical properties of PLA-based composites indicated that tensile and flexural strength of biocomposites generally decreased when compared to those of virgin polymers, while Young’s modulus and flexural modulus increased with corresponding increase in fibre content from 15% to 30%. On the other hand, PCL-based biocomposites with 30% fibre loading offered higher flexural strength than that of composites loaded with 15% fibres; similarly, tensile modulus and flexural modulus increased with an increase in fibre content. The most significant result is that tensile-impact strength of PLA- and PCL-based composites increased with addition…

▼ This thesis looks on alternatives to plastic takeaway cutlery and crockery from areca palm and coconut tree by products. Most of the take away materials used today are made of plastic that is disposed of upon single use. This presents a huge challenge in terms of waste management and pollution. It is widely known that plastic is produced from polymers generated by fossil oil that is explored from the soil and whose natural reserves are limited.
Due to its nature, it takes several hundred to thousand years to decompose plastics, releasing toxic substances in the process.
This work focuses on reviving the methods and knowledge that existed in the southern and central parts of the Indian subcontinent for producing sustainable goods used in everyday life, aiming to make sustainable cutlery and crockery. The materials that are under study are palm areca sheaths, coconut fibre, shells and banana fibres. A market analysis, design, life cycle analysis and deeper research on the fabrication was made.
The life cycle analysis (LCA) was conducted from data obtained from the Eco invent v2 atabase. CML 2000 method was used to assess and compare the data. Existing data from the database was considered to estimate the final impact through weighted averages. The results show that the materials under study perform better than conventional plastic materials with respect to emissions and other parameters. The main impact involved in the production of the various products was found out to be transportation. When imported and produced in bulk, costs and impacts of the suggested alternatives are lower than those of the conventional products. Comparing results for cardboard and palm areca boxes for example the Global warming potential for the alternatives were 7.07E-02 compared to 11.2E-02 kg CO2 equivalent for the conventional products. Similarly, when plastic plates and palm plates were compared .46E-08 and 4.62E-09 kg CFC 11 eq were the values for ozone layer depletion. Most other results follow the same route which is a clear indication that most of our alternatives have a good environmental performance for a lower or the same price.

▼ Because of global environmental concerns for concrete and waste materials and increased awareness of non-renewable natural resources, there is an urgent need to find ways to develop
eco-
friendly concretes. This is reflected in the large number of recent studies undertaken toward this end. However, the existing studies lack some of main parameters and points, such as the influence of the quality of recycled aggregates, influence of the full replacement of dry constituents with waste-based alternatives, influence of high performance graphene nanomaterials, and influence of the lateral confinement at the material level on the properties of concretes. This thesis contains a series of journal papers focused on the development of
eco-
friendly and high performance construction materials. In this research the behaviour of different types of concretes and mortars, including recycled aggregate concrete (RAC), geopolymer mortar, waste-based concrete and mortar, and graphene-based cement mortar, is studied. In addition, this thesis presents the behaviour of geopolymer concrete and steel fibre-reinforced concrete (SFRC) under active confinement and high-strength concrete (HSC) under shape memory alloy (SMA) confinement. The experimental study on time-dependent and long-term mechanical properties of RACs shows that high-strength RACs, prepared with full replacement of natural aggregates with recycled concrete aggregates having a high parent concrete strength (110 MPa), exhibit the properties similar to or better than those of companion natural aggregate concretes. Using gene expression programming (GEP) technique, new empirical models are developed to accurately predict mechanical properties of RACs. In addition, analytical studies on RACs reveal that multivariate adaptive regression splines (MARS), M5 model tree (M5Tree), and least squares support vector regression (LSSVR) models provide close predictions of mechanical properties of RACs by accurately capturing influences of key parameters. The experimental study on waste-based concrete reveals that concretes containing ground granulated blast furnace slag (GGBS) at up to 90% cement replacement exhibit nearly similar mechanical properties to the conventional concrete after 28 days of curing age. The experimental studies on geopolymer and waste-based mortars show that mortars with full replacement of sand with lead smelter slag (LSS) and glass sand (GS) and up to 80% replacement of cement with GGBS exhibit nearly similar mechanical properties to the conventional mortar. The study on the influence of graphene oxide (GO) dosage on physiochemical and mechanical properties of cement mortars shows considerable dosage dependence with the optimum dosage of 0.1% GO (by weight of cement) that increases 28-day tensile and compressive strength of the composite by 37.5% and 77.7%, respectively. The study on the influence of oxygen functional groups of graphene on the properties of cement mortars reveals that an addition of 0.1% reduced GO (rGO) prepared by 15 min reduction and 0.2% (wt%)…
