▼ Since its creation in 1950 as a subsidiary of the Cultural League, the East German Writers Union embodied a fundamental tension, one that was never resolved during the course of its forty-year existence. The union served two masters—the state and its members—and as such, often found it difficult fulfilling the expectations of both. In this way, the union was an expression of a basic contradiction in the relationship between writers and the state: the ruling Socialist Unity Party (SED) demanded ideological compliance, yet these writers also claimed to be critical, engaged intellectuals. This dissertation examines how literary intellectuals and SED cultural officials contested and debated the differing and sometimes contradictory functions of the Writers Union and how each utilized it to shape relationships and identities within the literary community and beyond it. The union was a crucial site for constructing a group image for writers, both in terms of external characteristics (values and goals for participation in wider society) and internal characteristics (norms and acceptable behavioral patterns guiding interactions with other union members). In examining the Writers Union, this project speaks to ongoing historical debates about the institutional means through which writers interacted with the dictatorship as well as debates on the nature of the East German dictatorship more generally. Its methods probe two interrelated topics: the significance of the Writers Union as a professional institution for the lives of its members, and the role of East German writers as public intellectuals under a socialist dictatorship. In the end, there were always powerful disincentives to using occasions provided by the union to articulate criticisms of socialism in East Germany, but by the late 1980s, writers dissatisfied with certain aspects of real existing socialism had found new ways to express their concerns through the union, and in the process expanded the limits of permissible speech under the dictatorship.

▼ This dissertation investigates how the Holocaust and postwar sovietization shaped the dynamics of Jewish communities and ordinary life in southwestern Ukraine. I examine the relationship between state policy and the sphere of Jewish religious practice. Two research questions motivated this study: (1) What was the trajectory of the lives of Eastern European Jews who came back from Nazi concentration camps? and (2) How did Jews negotiate their religious and public identities in an everyday setting? To examine these questions, the study illuminates the postwar life of one group of Jewish Holocaust survivors in the periphery of the Soviet Union. Literature on postwar Soviet Jewry has focused almost exclusively on the lives of elites in the center. This study enhances our understanding of Jewish integration into Soviet society. I used oral history, collected during my own ethnographic fieldwork in Israel and Ukraine, as well as state archives to analyze processes of return and integration. Interviews with ordinary people permit a social perspective on political developments and communal reconstruction. Statistical data and official communication provide the framework necessary to show the dynamics of Jewish life. Combining archival material with oral history demonstrates that the impact of Soviet rule on Jewish life after World War II is more complex than previously portrayed. Topics examined include the liberation from Nazi concentration camps, arrival experiences in Transcarpathia, the reconstruction of private and public Jewish life in the late 1940s and everyday Jewish practice in the 1950s and early 60s. Ordinary Jews fully integrated into society, succeeded in their careers and expressed their Jewish identity through religious practice. The findings include individual negotiation of demands in secular society and the methods of circumventing obstacles that restricted religious practice. The analysis of the interviews, however, prompts a reconsideration of postwar Soviet Jewish life with regard to persecution and emigration narratives.

▼ Exploring the history and trajectory of women's issues and activism in Poland, this work begins discussing the early twentieth century, moving through to the time period of the Solidarity trade union movement, continuing through the political transitions during the 1990s and ending in the present day. By examining a multitude of issues which affect women's lives (in the quotidian and overall senses), the existence, development and necessity of women's organizations and feminist activism in Poland becomes apparent. Labor, social, legal, and economic issues are of primary concern in contextualizing Polish women's place in society.;The introductory chapter begins by examining Polish women's early activity in political and economic issues to provide context for their later involvement in Solidarity's operations. The aim of the second chapter is to discuss women's involvement with the Solidarity movement and to recognize the consequences of their subsequent exclusion from political processes during the country's transition from communism to democracy.;Focusing first on the historical context of women in Polish society through the 1990s, this work then proceeds to examine the unique case of what it means to be a woman in Poland by introducing specific issues such as the controversial abortion laws, the influence of the Catholic Church, nationalism and Polish politics in the early transitional period and periodically comparing the Polish case to that of German women. The following chapter then proceeds to examine the vast spectrum of women's activism in Poland and the cultural difficulties in embracing the concept of feminism. Finally, the last chapter of this work details current issues, problems and potential for Polish women and concludes with an analysis of the importance of women's activism and feminist principles of equality in society as critical to national and international measures of progress and development.;The purpose of this work is to note the existing inequality between men and women, which has developed in an interesting manner in Polish society. Given the unique aspects of gender inequality in Poland this work clearly establishes a need for further scholarship and support for women's activism. In a world which some consider post-feminist, the importance of cultivating a sense of feminist curiosity in such research is of utmost importance. Continuing to address the inequality and discrimination propagated by gender stereotypes and cultural tradition is not only a choice, but a duty for historical scholars. In the case of Poland, unique ties between the Catholic Church and Polish nationalism have created a climate in which women's activism and feminism has been closely linked with a negative socialist legacy and has also been labeled a detrimental by-product of cultural modernism. This work sheds light on such issues in Poland, contributing to previous historiography on women in Central and Eastern Europe while providing a fresh perspective. ▼ The Afghan stabilization mission is a new challenge for Central European countries in the XXI century, and probably the most important and the most difficult mission for Central European armed forces. The fundamental role of NATO in Central European countries' security results from basic strategic documents related to common defense. Strengthening NATO, in short, strengthens Central European countries' security. In addition, the Afghanistan mission provides an invaluable experience for Central European armed forces.;The findings of this study shows that although the Visegrad countries' troop contribution lagged in the early phase of the ISAF mission, with the passing of time they have shared fairly the burden of responsibilities in Afghanistan. Moreover, Visegrad countries did not deploy forces to Afghanistan only because of allied obligations but also because of national interest and pragmatic reasons. Such considerable contributions by the Visegrad countries come from their aspiration to authenticate their reputation as a reliable allies. However, this research indicates that Visegrad countries' investment of troops and money did not translate into change of relations with the USA in particularly sensitive areas, as expected by Central European governments.;The new generation of Central European citizens and politicians do not seem to be anti-American, but there is a growing sense that Visegrad countries, especially the largest member - Poland, went too far in supporting Washington's foreign policy. The major reason for the reassessment of the Polish – American relationship is Warsaw's heightened self-reliance as a member of the European Union, and awareness that now the most pivotal issues are negotiated in Brussels. Another explanation is that Warsaw is mindful that being one of the most devoted US allies in Europe has brought more disadvantages than advantages. Therefore, it seems that Americans should slowly get used to the inevitable day when Poland and other Central European countries will oppose Washington's political, economic or military projects. And it will not be associated to Central European resentment towards Washington's foreign policy, but a sign of the times of independence and maturity of the Visegrad countries in international politics. ▼ Relying on numerous testimonies of Soviet women combatants, this thesis demonstrates the wartime and post-war realities of Soviet women soldiers. About a million of women combatants took an active part in the war, yet they remained in the shadow of the Great Victory of 1945. This paper explores the unwillingness of the Soviet state to recognize the contribution of Soviet women combatants in the fighting of the Second World War. Why did the myth of the Great Patriotic War exclude women? Why were some women soldiers more worthy of recognition than others? What, compared to female veterans, was the status of male veterans in the post-World War Two Soviet society?;The main findings of the thesis showed that the reasons for the marginalization of female combatants in the Soviet society include the gender ideology of the Soviet state and marginal status of women within it, the pro-natalist policies of the Soviet state in which a woman was first of all a mother and keeper of the household, and the psychological effects of war on former women combatants. Thus the ideal image of a Soviet woman was that of a mother and a housekeeper and left no room for that of a woman soldier.;The second part of this thesis compared the status of female and male veterans. The results of that comparison demonstrated that Soviet veterans of the Second World War were all neglected, regardless of their sex. It was not only women combatants who remained in the shadow of the Great Victory, but also male veterans of the Great Patriotic War were ignored and at times victimized by the Stalinist state. They did not receive any more recognition than female combatants. Maybe it seemed that they were proclaimed "heroes" more often, but in practice such proclamation brought nothing with it.;In the narrative of the Myth of the Great Patriotic War female combatants were invisible, whereas male combatants were characterless. The victory was proclaimed as a collective achievement of the Soviet state and society, and the number of recognized heroes of the Great Patriotic War remained minimal. Research on the experience of Soviet veterans remains minimal. With each passing year, veterans decrease in number. Hence there is an immediate need to conduct new research on the topic. ▼ This research is a qualitative case study that analyzes how and why the Open Society Institute (OSI) chose the US-based Head Start (HS) program as an appropriate early childhood education (ECE) model to borrow and implement in the post-socialist region as the Step by Step (SbS) program. With the re-introduction of democracy and open society in the post-socialist region, educational borrowing has become one of the key strategies in the rebuilding and reformation of post-socialist education systems. While the process of educational borrowing is not a new phenomenon, the role of local and national governments' involvement has changed as multiple agencies, ranging from international NGOs to semi-governmental organizations (such as the World Bank), have become involved in the development and implementation of educational reform processes. The provision of ECE has become a critical catalyst to promote stability within transitioning countries, as funding for these programs provides an important site for foreign intervention due to the intrinsic value offered to parents, along with the perceived neutrality of ECE. The study highlights tensions present between local practitioners responsible for implementation of the transferred program and foundation personnel responsible for maintenance and the future of the foundation; and illustrates difficulties in maintaining enthusiasm and impetus for a developed program when the goals of the developing foundation have changed over time. Specifically, the study focused on four main findings: (1) donors choose specific programs and practices that support the mission of the organization; (2) specific forms of transfer are involved in the borrowing process that serve as a filter to the information and practices transferred; (3) there is a need for more genuine local involvement in the early stages of program replication; (4) the transfer of a program is not a linear process; instead it becomes enmeshed in the complex social interactions of individuals and organizations involved in the transfer process.

▼ Despite the rapid growth in the numbers of new Eastern Europeans in the United States, very little is known about this immigrant population. There is no published systematic study of their adaptation to American life. Using the latest nationally representative quantitative data, this dissertation attempts to fill this gap in the literature by systematically examining the cultural, socioeconomic, structural, and political adaptation of post-1991 Eastern European immigrants in the United States. Two research questions will guide this study. First, to what extent do post-1991 Eastern European immigrants in the United States adapt culturally, socioeconomically, structurally, and politically to American life? Second, what are the major determinants of cultural, socioeconomic, structural, and political adaptation of post-1991 Eastern European immigrants in the United States? This dissertation is the first comprehensive study of the adaptation experience of post-1991 Eastern European immigrants in the United States. The study contributes to the field by simultaneously examining the cultural, socioeconomic, structural, and political adaptation of these new immigrants. In addition to an important methodological contribution and policy implications, the project reviews contesting perspectives of immigrant adaptation and develops a theoretical base for understanding Eastern European immigration. Since different Eastern European groups adapt to their new lives in the United States differently, their adaptation experiences can be best explained by different theoretical frameworks.</DISS_para> Data from the Department of Homeland Security were used to describe the recent trends and patterns of immigration from Eastern Europe to the United States. The 2006-2010 American Community Survey (ACS), the 2008-2010 Civic Engagement Supplement of the Current Population Survey (CES-CPS), and the 2002-2010 Voting and Registration Supplement of the Current Population Survey (VRS-CPS) collected by the U.S. Bureau of the Census were used to address aspects of cultural, socioeconomic, structural, and political adaptation of new Eastern European immigrants. Ordinary least squares regression and logistic regression were used to test the hypotheses. The results show that new Eastern European immigrants have achieved a relatively high degree of English proficiency, and being recent immigrants, they have a higher likelihood of retaining their native language than other immigrant groups. Overall, new Eastern European immigrants tend to be highly educated and professional, but their average personal income is surprisingly low. Participation in civic organizations and neighborhood interaction of new Eastern European immigrants is somewhat limited, indicating that a relatively high degree of cultural and socioeconomic adaptation might not result in better structural adaptation for these immigrants. ▼ During the late Soviet period, many educators, scientists and journalists believed that traditional gender roles and norms had changed, producing physically or ethically weak men and correspondingly strong women. The following study follows the representations of this shift among Soviet nonconformist poets, writers and playwrights in the 1960s, 1970s and 1980s. Social scientists have argued that these perceived changes were explained in their time as the result of demographic imbalance of men to women or the deterioration of men's bodies due to problems such as alcoholism. In contrast, this study shows that in nonconformist literature, the late Soviet gender crisis was a reaction to the Stalinist unitary model of the "steeled" man, as expressed in culture and art. Authors articulated alternative models of masculinity as part of a larger critique of Soviet, primarily Stalinist, civilization. This dissertation analyzes the prose works of Venedikt Erofeev and Yuz Aleshkovsky, the poetry of Genrikh Sapgir and Nina Iskrenko, and the prose and plays of Lyudmila Petrushevskaya. How did these authors construct male weakness and female strength - physically, mentally, spiritually, or as a mixture of all three aspects? Did they decry these changes or did they valorize them as alternatives to the Stalinist legacy of "steeled" men? Did the authors place the responsibility for the perceived emasculation of the Soviet man on the state or on the man himself? As this study demonstrates, nonconformist authors emphasize detachment from the Stalinist "steeled man" and Soviet national identity. However, they do not valorize this detachment. They do not call the reader to "turn off," but search imaginatively for alternative masculinities. They turn to the cultural past as a source for models of manhood. Furthermore, the authors problematize disengagement from society. A highly ambivalent alternative model for masculinity is the antithesis of the Soviet "steeled man": the feeble, irresponsible, often alcoholic weakling. While writers such as Erofeev elicit compassion for this archetype, already in Sapgir's early work, it provokes a mixture of ridicule and horror. Petrushevskaya and Iskrenko capitalize on this tendency, unleashing irony and parody at the archetype.

▼ The Apocalypse of Abraham, a pseudepigraphon only extant in a fourteenth century Old Church Slavonic manuscript, has not received much attention from scholars of Ancient Judaism, due in part to a lack of readily available information regarding the history and transmission of the Slavonic Pseudepigrapha. This dissertation examines the historical context of these works with the aim of assessing the probability that they contain ancient Jewish material. The rest of the dissertation is focused on the Apocalypse of Abraham specifically, discussing its date and provenance, original language, probability that it comes from Essene circles, textual unity, and Christian interpolations. This includes treatments of the issue of free will, determinism, and predestination in the Apocalypse of Abraham as well as the methodological complexities in trying to distinguish between early Jewish and Christian works. It also provides an in-depth comparison of the Apocalypse of Abraham with 4 Ezra and 2 Baruch and takes up the question of the social setting for these texts based on relevant precedents set by recent scholars of midrash who seek to probe the “socio-cultural and historical situatedness” of midrashic texts. This discussion includes a survey of parallels between the content of the Apocalypse of Abraham and rabbinic literature to support the argument that a sharp distinction between apocalyptic ideas and what later became rabbinic tradition did not exist in the time between 70 and 135 C.E. Overall, this dissertation argues that the Apocalypse of Abraham is an early Jewish document written during the decades following the destruction of the Second Temple. While seeking to warn its readers of the dangers of idolatry in light of the apocalyptic judgment still to come, it also provides sustained exegesis of Genesis 15, which gives cohesion to the entire document. ▼ The collapse of the Soviet Union in 1991 has brought the problem of Russian organized crime to the fore of public opinion, political discourse and international media representation. The comparative strength of the Soviet State, with its official low crime rates and general social order, presents a puzzle to researchers studying criminality during the transitional period.Comparatively, the former satellite nations of the Soviet Union have experienced fewer difficulties with organized crime than in the Russian Federation. Although organized crime played a greater role in the administration of black markets in the satellite nations in comparison to the Soviet Union, one would expect countries such as Poland to have a much greater propensity for the expansion of organized crime during the transitional period.The transition to a market economy was achieved with differing degrees of success in Russia and Poland; whereas in Poland, firms have had incentives to join the official economy through the benefits of state institutions protecting property rights, in Russia, predatory regulation has forced firms into the “shadow” economy. Unofficial firms have no recourse to official institutions such as legal arbitration and dispute resolution, and the need for protection from thousands of officially recognized organized gangs has created a demand for protection met by racketeers.This thesis researches the links between transitional state power, excessive bureaucratic regulation, and the growth of organized crime. Its primary focus is the expansion of organized criminal activity in the Russian Federation, but utilizes cross-country comparisons to compare and contrast differences and similarities of organized groups across an international spectrum of case studies and cross-country comparisons.Three main case studies (Russia, Sicily and the United States) will compare the growth of criminal gangs in national contexts, with one case study presented as an anomaly (Japan).Although many reasons contribute in an interrelated manner to the growth of organized crime, this thesis focuses upon aspects of state regulation and regime transition as catalysts underlying the growth of criminal gangs.
