▼ The compilation of wind resource assessments and the implicit long-term correction ofwind measurements require comprehensive data sets. Commonly employed data sets forthis purpose are wind measurements from weather stations as well as SupervisoryControl and Data Acquisition (SCADA) data from existing wind farms. In addition,reanalysis data are a consistent data source. Reanalysis data are a combination ofmeteorological models with measurements of climatology parameters. To increase theperformance of reanalysis data the corresponding data sets are processed with mesoscalemodels. The present study determines the suitability of the readily accessible EMDConWxEurope Mesoscale Data (EMD-ConWx Data) for wind resource assessments.EMD-ConWx Data include hourly wind velocities at seven heights in the range of 10 mup to 200 m and have a spatial resolution of 3 x 3 km. EMD-ConWx Data are based onthe primary reanalysis data set ERA-Interim. The EMD-ConWx Data are compared toSonic Detecting and Ranging (Sodar) measurements at 22 sites in Germany regardingthe parameters wind speed, wind direction and wind speed frequency distribution. Inaddition, the statistical correlation (R) and linear regression (R²) are determined.It was found, that EMD-ConWx Data reveal a moderate accuracy for wind resourceassessments. The determined average wind speed bias of 1.02 m/s, the average rootmeans square error (RMSE) of 1.91 m/s, the average wind direction bias of -0.89° andthe monthly correlation indicate overall an adequate match with the Sodarmeasurements. However, these results entail considerable uncertainties and variances.To reduce these variances and the wind speed overestimation a height shift of 50 m forthe EMD-ConWx wind velocity heights is introduced. The comparison of the EMDConWxwind data at 50 m to Sodar measurements at 100 m leads to a significantreduction of the wind speed bias, but it improves neither the wind direction accuracy northe wind speed correlation. Overall, the EMD-ConWx Data are suitable for windresource assessments and the implicit long-term correction of wind data. The EMDConWxData with the height shift imply the advantage of a proper representation of thewind profile in relation to common reanalysis data, even at sites with complex terrain.

▼ This dissertation consists of three articles examining the effects of modified lighting on commonly observed behaviors in children diagnosed with behavior-based disabilities. Prior literature has evaluated the effect of lighting on academic skills. Unfortunately, there is an absence of evidence regarding the effect of lighting on behaviors. Taken together these three articles will clearly display the importance of carefully designing lighting in classrooms, specifically in classrooms that include children with behavior-based disabilities. The first article (Chapter 2) evaluates the effect lighting with low level illumination has on the behaviors commonly observed in a child diagnosed with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD). The second article (Chapter 3) evaluates the same effect in a child diagnosed with Emotional Disorder (EMD) and ADHD. The third article (Chapter 4) is written with a practitioner focus including recommendation for environmental changes that potentially create a calmer environment. The two studies were conducted using an ABAB design across twenty days in a general education inclusion setting. The researcher requested the general education teacher and special education teacher of record to complete the Behavior Assessment System for Children, Third Edition (BASC-3) to determine behaviors that were most common to the student participants. The Behavioral Observation of Students in Schools (BOSS) software was used to track frequency of behaviors throughout each phase of the studies. Visual analysis was used and demonstrated change between baseline and intervention phases and sets of data collected by the BOSS software were statistically analyzed by using a nonparametric measure of nonoverlap called Improvement Rate Difference (IRD). The third article consists of a brief literature review, simplified results from articles one and two, a brief case study, and author suggestions for implementation of variable lighting in additional classrooms. ▼ Le coeur est un muscle. Son fonctionnement mécanique est celui d'une pompe chargée de distribuer et de récupérer le sang dans les poumons et dans le système cardiovasculaire. Son fonctionnement électrique est régulé par le son noeud sinusal, un stimulateur ou régulateur électrique chargé de déclencher les battements naturels du coeur qui rythment le fonctionnement du corps. Les médecins surveillent ce fonctionnement électromécanique du coeur en enregistrant un signal électrique appelé électrocardiogramme (ECG) ou un signal sonore : le phono-cardiogramme (PCG). L'analyse et le traitement de ces deux signaux sont fondamentaux pour établir un diagnostic et aider à déceler des anomalies et des pathologies cardiaques. L’objectif de cette thèse est de développer des techniques de traitement des signaux ECG et notamment PCG afin d’aider le médecin dans son analyse de ces signaux. L’idée de fond est de mettre en point des algorithmes relativement simples et peu coûteux en temps de calcul. Le premier intérêt serait de garantir leur implantation aisée dans un système mobile de surveillance cardiaque à l’usage du médecin, voire du patient. Le deuxième intérêt réside dans la possibilité d’une analyse automatique en temps réel des signaux avec le dispositif mobile, autorisant le choix de la transmission de ces signaux pour une levée de doute. De nombreux travaux ont mené à des avancées significatives dans l’analyse des signaux ECG et la reconnaissance automatiques des pathologies cardiaques. Des bases de données de signaux réels ou synthétiques annotées permettent également d’évaluer les performances de toute nouvelle méthode. Quant aux signaux PCG, ils sont nettement moins étudiés, difficiles à analyser et à interpréter. Même si les grandes familles de méthodes (Fourier, Wigner Ville et ondelettes) ont été testées, elles n’autorisent pas une reconnaissance automatique des signatures, d’en avoir une analyse et une compréhension assez fines.La Transformée en Ondelettes (TO) sur les signaux cardiaques a montré son efficacité pour filtrer et localiser les informations utiles mais elle fait intervenir une fonction externe de traitement (ondelette mère) dont le choix dépend de la connaissance au préalable du signal à traiter. Ce n'est pas toujours adapté aux signaux cardiaques. De plus, la Transformée en ondelettes induit généralement une imprécision dans la localisation due à la fonction externe et éventuellement au sous-échantillonnage des signatures. La nature non stationnaire de l'ECG et du PCG et leur sensibilité aux bruits rendent difficile la séparation d’une transition informative d'une transition due aux bruits de mesure. Le choix de l'outil de traitement doit permettre un débruitage et une analyse de ces signaux sans délocalisation des singularités ni altération de leurs caractéristiques. Les superpositions d'ondes modulées en amplitude et en fréquence (modes AM – FM) sont couramment utilisées pour modéliser de nombreux signaux du monde réel : cela inclut des signaux audio (musique, parole), médicaux (ECG), ou diverses séries temporelles (températures, consommation électrique). L'objectif de ce travail est l'analyse et la compréhension fine de tels signaux, dits "multicomposantes" car ils contiennent plusieurs modes. Les méthodes mises en oeuvre vont permettre de les représenter efficacement, d'identifier les différents modes puis de les démoduler (c'est-à-dire déterminer leur amplitude et fréquence instantanée), et enfin de les reconstruire. On se place pour cela dans le cadre bien établi de l'analyse temps-fréquence (avec la transformée de Fourier à court terme) ou temps-échelle (transformée en ondelettes continue). On s'intéressera également à une méthode plus algorithmique et moins fondée mathématiquement, basée sur la notion de symétrie des enveloppes des modes : la décomposition modale empirique. La première contribution de la thèse propose une alternative au processus dit ``de tamisage'' dans la décomposition modale empirique, dont la convergence et la stabilité ne sont pas garanties. \`A la place, une étape d'optimisation sous contraintes ainsi qu'une meilleure détection des extrema locaux du mode haute fréquence garantissent l'existence mathématique du mode, tout en donnant de bons résultats empiriques. La deuxième contribution concerne l'analyse des signaux multicomposantes par la transformée de Fourier à court terme et à la transformée en ondelettes continues, en exploitant leur structure particulière ``en ridge'' dans le plan temps-fréquence. Plus précisément, nous proposons une nouvelle méthode de reconstruction des modes par intégration locale, adaptée à la modulation fréquentielle, avec des garanties théoriques. Cette technique donne lieu à une nouvelle méthode de débruitage des signaux multicomposantes. La troisième contribution concerne l'amélioration de la qualité de la représentation au moyen de la ``réallocation'' et du ``synchrosqueezing''. Nous prolongeons le synchrosqueezing à la transformée de Fourier à court terme, et en proposons deux extensions inversibles et adaptées à des modulations fréquentielles importantes, que nous comparons aux méthodes originelles. Une généralisation du synchrosqueezing à la dimension 2 est enfin proposée, qui utilise le cadre de la transformée en ondelettes monogène.

Many signals from the physical world can be modeled accurately as a superposition of amplitude- and frequency-modulated waves. This includes audio signals (speech, music), medical data (ECG) as well as temporal series (temperature or electric consumption). ▼ According to the previous studies, the convergent and divergent zones of an internal soliton wave train can be distinguished from the roughness of sea surface observed by the radar remote sensor. Similar results were also described in the SAR images. Historical studies showed that a convergent zone was related to the arrival of a depression internal soliton. In the meantime, the rough sea surface was shown which presented white zones in SAR image. The following was a divergent zone with smooth sea surface which was a dark zone shown in SAR image. Comparing with these studies, however, the timing of those phenomena did not match well when internal soliton waves were observed during the field works. As a result, the main purpose of this research is to determing if the roughness phenomenon on sea surface is consistent with the wave forms measured under the sea surface. A mooring of thermistor string with several pressure sensors was deployed at east slope of Dongsha Atoll region during 2015/10/1 to 2015/10/2. A high-resolution pressure meter was located at the depth of 10 meters to detect the surface roughness. Several CTD casts were during the arrival of internal solitons. The mooring recorded two groups of internal waves successfully. Photos and videos were also applied to record the rough and smooth phenomena on the sea surface. Internal solitons were selected based on the record of the moored thermistor string. The EMD and EEMD were applied to the data from the high-resolution pressure meter . The amplitudes and periods of solitons were therefore identified. The results show that the depression internal soliton can produce swells at convergent zone, then followed by ripples. However, the position of smooth phenomenon couldnât be determined based on this experiment. The EEMD method can separate the noise with period less than 2-second from the other signals. The signals extracted from EEMD (noise_IMF3) were similar to the surface swells caused by internal soliton of depression waves form before the arrival of convergent zone. The period of these swells are about 6 to 9 seconds. In addition, the rough phenomena (noise_IMF2) with period of 2 to 5 seconds and smaller wave heights probably can be related to the ripples. Also, the extracted EEMD signals (noise_IMF4) can be related to wind with the period is about 11 to 14 seconds. No matter how the wave form of internal wave is, we found the results from EMD and EEMD are simillar. The analysis concludes that the sea surface roughness is produced and transfer forward when the internal soliton formed. ▼ When it comes to monitoring human health, accuracy is not a choice. Accuracy in blood pressure (BP) estimation is essential for proper diagnosis and management of hypertension. An error of 5 mmHg is so serious, it can be responsible for doubling or halving number of patients diagnosed with hypertension. Motion artifacts are external sources of inaccuracy and can be due to sudden arm motion, muscle tremor, shivering, and transport vehicle vibration. Medium term drift, due to changing environmental factors, such as ambient temperature, can also contribute to the inaccuracy. Long term drift (ageing), can reach 9 mmHg during the first three months of usage. In this thesis, a new stage is added to current cuff based BP devices. This stage is responsible for adjusting the pressure reading before displaying it to end users. The proposed stage is provided with a 3-axis accelerometer, which makes the detection of motion artifacts during measurement possible. Moreover, it monitors changes in the ambient temperature and sensor ageing, so that it will adaptively compensate for these inaccuracies. These sources of inaccuracy are suppressed using algorithms based on Empirical Mode Decomposition (EMD), which has the feature of removing unwanted noise components little effect on the phase or the frequency distribution of the measured signal. With motion artifacts, measurements show that the proposed algorithms considerably improved the accuracy of the blood pressure estimates in comparison with the commonly-used conventional oscillometric algorithm that does not include a stage for artifact suppression, and allowed the estimates to consistent with the international ANSI/AAMI/ISO standard. Moreover, simulations based on experimental results show that the system is able to compensate for drift due to temperature changes and ageing with excellent performance. Results show promise towards building a robust BP monitor, with very low errors due to motion artifacts, environmental changes, and ageing.

▼ The foreign exchange market is one of the largest and most active financial markets with enormous daily trading volumes. Exchange rates are influenced by the interactions of a large number of agents, each operating with different intentions and on different time scales. This gives rise to nonlinear and non-stationary behaviour which complicates modelling. This research proposes a neural network based model trained on data filtered with a novel Empirical Mode Decomposition (EMD) filtering method for the forecasting of exchange rates. One minor and two major exchange rates are evaluated in this study. Firstly the ideal prediction horizons for trading are calculated for each of the exchange rates. The data is filtered according to this ideal prediction horizon using the EMD-filter. This EMD-filter dynamically filters the data based on the apparent number of intrinsic modes in the signal that can contribute towards prediction over the selected horizon. The filter is employed to filter out high frequency noise and components that would not contribute to the prediction of the exchange rate at the chosen timescale. This results in a clearer signal that still includes nonlinear behaviour. An artificial neural network predictor is trained on the filtered data using different sampling rates that are compatible with the cut-off frequency. The neural network is able to capture the nonlinear relationships between historic and future filtered data with greater certainty compared to a neural network trained on unfiltered data. Results show that the neural network trained on EMD-filtered data is significantly more accurate at prediction of exchange rates compared to the benchmark models of a neural network trained on unfiltered data and a random walk model for all the exchange rates. The EMD-filtered neural network’s predicted returns for the higher sample rates show higher correlations with the actual returns, and significant profits can be made when applying a trading strategy based on the predictions. Lower sample rates that just marginally satisfy the Nyquist criterion perform comparably with the neural network trained on unfiltered data; this may indicate that some aliasing occurs for these sampling rates as the EMD low-pass filter has a gradual cut-off, leaving some high frequency noise within the signal. The proposed model of the neural network trained on EMD-filtered data was able to uncover systematic relationships between the filtered inputs and actual outputs. The model is able to deliver profitable average monthly returns for most of the tested sampling rates and forecast horizons of the different exchange rates. This provides evidence that systematic predictable behaviour is present within exchange rates, and that this systematic behaviour can be modelled if it is properly separated from high frequency noise.

Cette étude introduit une nouvelle approche appelée Bivariate 2D-EMD pour séparer le mouvement organisé à grande échelle, soit la composante basse fréquence de l’écoulement des fluctuations turbulentes, soit la composante haute fréquence dans un champ de vitesse instantané bidimensionnel.Cette séparation nécessite un seul champ de vitesse instantané contrairement aux autres méthodes plus couramment utilisées en mécanique des fluides, comme le POD. La méthode proposée durant cette thèse est tout à fait appropriée à l’analyse des écoulements qui sont intrinsèquement instationnaires et non linéaires comme l'écoulement dans le cylindre lorsque le moteur fonctionne dans des conditions transitoires. Bivariate 2D-EMD est validé à travers différents cas test, sur un écoulement turbulent homogène et isotrope (THI) expérimental, qui a été perturbé par un tourbillon synthétique de type Lamb-Ossen, qui simule le mouvement organisé dans le cylindre. Enfin, Il est appliqué sur un écoulement expérimental obtenu dans un cylindre et les résultats de la séparation d'écoulement sont comparés à ceux basés sur l'analyse POD. L’évolution d’écoulement dans le cylindre pendant le fonctionnement du moteur transitoire, c’est à dire une accélération du régime moteur de 1000 à 2000tr/min en différentes rampes, sont mesurée en utilisant de PIV 2D-2C haute cadence. Les champs de vitesse sont obtenus dans le plan de tumble dans un moteur un moteur GDI mono-cylindre transparent et forment une base de données nécessaire pour valider les résultats de simulation numérique.

This study introduces a new approach called Bivariate 2D-EMD to separate large-scale organizedmotion i.e., flow low frequency component from random turbulent fluctuations i.e., high frequency onein a given in-cylinder instantaneous 2D velocity field. This signal processing method needs only oneinstantaneous velocity field contrary to the other methods commonly used in fluid mechanics, as POD.The proposed method is quite appropriate to analyze the flows intrinsically both unsteady and nonlinearflows as in in-cylinder. The Bivariate 2D-EMD is validated through different test cases, by optimize itand apply it on an experimental homogeneous and isotropic turbulent flow (HIT), perturbed by asynthetic Lamb-Ossen vortex, to simulate the feature of in-cylinder flows. Furthermore, it applies onexperimental in-cylinder flows. The results obtained by EMD and POD analysis are compared. Theevolution of in-cylinder flow during transient engine working mode, i.e., engine speed acceleration from1000 to 2000 rpm with different time periods, was obtained by High speed PIV 2D-2C. The velocityfields are obtained within tumble plane in a transparent mono-cylinder DISI engine and provide a database to validate CFD.

▼ Emergency medical dispatch is the interface between patient and emergency medical service and therefore a crucial point for improvement of pre-hospital care. Protocol-based dispatch has shown to be effective in improving interrogation and dispatch in several studies. Since 2005, protocol based dispatch („Standardisiertes Notrufabfrageprotokoll (SNAP)“) is used in the Berlin fire service dispatch center. Investigating its influence on interrogation and dispatch concerning patients in cardiac arrest was the aim of in this study. Methods Cases of out-of-hospital cardiac arrest (OOHCA) were prospectively investigated in two periods: 1. before implementation of protocol based dispatch (pre-SNAP) and 2. after implementation and an interval of 26 months (post-SNAP). Audio recordings of the emergency calls were analysed concerning structure of interrogation, content of logistical and medical information and first-aid instructions. The corresponding reports of the emergency physician on scene and the official fire service statistics provided further data about operating times, initiated therapy and primary outcome. In the post-SNAP group, a subgroup analysis was conducted. Results 115 emergency calls were enclosed in each group. In the post-SNAP group, only 15 (13%) of calls were processed with full protocol compliance. Inquiry about logistical information was optimal in most cases pre-SNAP, but post-SNAP there is a significant improvement (p<0.05). Full protocol compliance only leads to further improvement concerning inquiry about a callback number (p<0.001). Regarding medical information, protocol training without protocol compliance has no significant effects. Essential information about consciousness and breathing is inquired significantly better in the subgroup with full protocol compliance (p<0.001). In this subgroup, caller interrogation is more structured and adequate first-aid instructions are given more frequently (p<0.05). There were no significant differences in the frequency of undersending, the time until arrival on scene and the primary outcome. Discussion Implementation of SNAP and full protocol compliance leads to more structured emergency interrogation and reliable inquiry of important information. Training on protocol based dispatch also leads to improved interrogation, but not to the extent of improvement achieved by full protocol compliance. ▼ Polymers with high thermal conductivities are of great interest to both scientific research and industrial applications. In this dissertation, I use molecular dynamic (MD) simulations to study the fundamentals of thermal transport in bulk amorphous polymers, including 1) polymer blends, 2) block copolymers and 3) polyelectrolytes. In polymer blends, the thermal conductivity is strongly related to the chain conformation, especially the spatial extent of the polymer chains, which can be characterized by their radii of gyration (Rg). Increasing the inter-chain interactions in polymer blends will increase the thermal conductivity, which is due to the conformation change in the major component that eventually leads to an enhancement in thermal transport along the polymer chain backbone through the intra-chain bonding interactions. The polymer chain conformation and thermal conductivity relationship is also applicable to polyethylene-polypropylene (PE-PP) diblock copolymers. The thermal conductivity of the PE-PP diblock copolymer can be tuned continuously by the block ratio, which influences the Rg. However, in polyelectrolytes the mechanism of thermal conductivity enhancement with ionization ratio increasing is not due to the chain conformation change. In solid polyelectrolytes the chains are collapsed, and the thermal conductivity contribution from intra-molecular bonding interaction is constant. By adding metal cations, the Coulombic force attracts the atoms and increases the Lennard-Jones (LJ) repulsive force, and as a result the thermal conductivity contribution from LJ interaction increases. The fundamental structure- property relationship in soft materials (polymers) established in this research project can provide guidance for designing and synthesizing polymers with desirable thermal conductivity. The interfacial thermal conductance (ITC) between hard-soft interfaces is another critical factor that can affect the thermal conductivity of composite materials. I use 1) equilibrium molecular dynamics (EMD) simulations combined with the Green-Kubo (GK) formula and 2) phonon wave packet (WP) MD methods to study how different types of self-assembled monolayers (SAM) affect the thermal transport across the Au (gold)-SAM-organic liquid interfaces. In the EMD method, we focus on a practically synthesizable heterogeneous SAM structures with alternating short-long molecular chains, namely the “molecular fin” structure. The “molecular fin” structure is found to improve the thermal conductance by 46-68% compared to a homogeneous SAM. I find that the root reason of this enhancement in thermal conductance is due to the penetration of the liquid molecules into the spaces between the long SAM molecules, which increases the effective contact area. The WP method shows that the Au-COOH SAM-hexamine interface has the highest energy transmission coefficients of all phonons, and as a result its ITC is also the highest. Manganese dioxide is one of the most common primary battery materials used throughout the world due to a unique combination of properties. The world-wide market for batteries incorporating manganese dioxide is estimated to be of the order of $10 billion dollars per year, with electrolytically deposited manganese dioxide (EMD) the material of choice for use in primary alkaline Zn-Mn0₂ cells. Unfortunately, the use of such a large number of primary batteries represents a serious energy and material waste, and it is logical for attention to focus on development of a rechargeable battery system based on the manganese dioxide electrode. This study in the Department of Chemistry at the University of Newcastle, supported by the Australian Manganese Company Limited, was aimed at furthering our understanding of the rechargeability of the manganese dioxide electrode. Birnessite manganese dioxide, modified by the inclusion of Bi³⁺ ions, is a highly rechargeable material that is structurally different to EMD. This and related types of modified material were the topic of this research project. Birnessite manganese dioxide was produced in the project under conditions of controlled pH, Eh and temperature using a completely automated chemostat which was assembled for the project. A range of samples were prepared and then characterized by determining the average manganese oxidation state, the crystallinity (from the XRD pattern) and the primary discharge capacity. Using these techniques, it was concluded that the birnessite sample with the optimum electrochemical performance was prepared under conditions of low pH (pH 5), high Eh (800 mV versus the Ag/AgC1 reference electrode) and high temperature (70°C). These synthesis conditions were then used to prepare a range of Bi-birnessite samples with variable Bi:Mn mole ratios. EMD based electrodes have one fundamental advantage over birnessite electrodes; ie. their density. As a result of EMD being denser than birnessite, it was considered a good candidate for study with dopants, and thus a number of chemically and physically modified EMD samples were prepared, each with a variable Bi:Mn mole ratio. Other dopants such as Pb²⁺, Ba²⁺ and Ti⁴⁺ were also considered briefly. Bi³⁺ was found to be both an effective dopant and to offer less environmental than Pb²⁺, the next most successful dopant. The improvements in performance incurred by introducing Ba²⁺ or Ti⁴⁺ were minimal. The performance of these samples as electrode materials led to the conclusion that there was an optimum dopant level that depended on the type of dopant and the way in which the doping was carried out. Both chemically modified (CMEMD) and physically modified (PMEMD) samples were investigated. The performance of the Bi-CMEMD and Bi-PMEMD electrodes was compared with that of the unmodified EMD electrode when the electrode parameters of graphite concentration, mean graphite particle size and discharge rate were varied. ▼ The properties of glassy polymers are generally studied in the vicinity of the glass transition temperature using frequency and time domain responses. In this work, we primarily focus on studying two time domain responses of glassy polymers namely the dielectric, the structural recovery, and aging responses. A proper understanding of these properties is essential for a better prediction of the performances of polymers. Time domain dielectric measurement provides a powerful means to study the glassy responses in short times (as low as micro seconds) to long times (>200 seconds) in a single measurement device. We built a Time Domain Dielectric Spectrometer (TDS) in our laboratory at Texas Tech to take advantage of this ability. Successful working of TDS was demonstrated by studying the dielectric response of poly (vinyl acetate) in a pulse-probe experiment. We see memory effect and this was in quantitative agreement with linear Boltzmann superposition for small applied fields. However, evidence of breakdown of linearity was observed at relatively larger applied fields. This is an interesting result, as we were able to demonstrate the ability to delineate between linear and nonlinear behaviors in the time domain. We also introduce a filtration tool called Empirical Mode Decomposition (EMD) to improve the data analysis in dielectric and structural recovery experiments whose data are time varying in nature corrupted with nonlinear noise. Structural recovery and aging experiments of glassy polymers are very well understood for temperature formed glasses compared to concentration formed glasses. Previous work from our group has shown that concentration formed glasses qualitatively mimic temperature formed glasses but were quantitatively different. Further, our preliminary work on the structural recovery of epoxy film subjected to CO2 plasticizer jumps showed that the effective retardation time for concentration formed glass and temperature formed glass (subjected to same final condition) do not converge to the same point as equilibrium is approached. Hence, we further investigated this behavior by studying the aging and structural recovery of epoxy film subjected to CO2 plasticizer jumps. ▼ Numerical methods and computational approaches for studying fluid flow have become increasingly popular and more mature in their capabilities since the 1960s, when the prohibitive experimental costs associated with flight vehicle development programs necessitated an alternative approach. Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) approaches for several practical applications were pioneered in the early 1980s, but despite the algorithmic advances the computing power necessary to compute full three-dimensional flow-fields remained a bottleneck. With the advent of powerful microprocessors and high performance supercomputers, high fidelity three-dimensional CFD for cases of practical interest have become feasible over the last couple of decades. Although these high fidelity simulations contain the desired physics, extracting that information is proving to be a challenge due to their extremely large size. For instance, a 3D Direct Numerical Simulation (DNS) or Large Eddy Simulation (LES) of an airfoil can produce terabytes of data. For such large datasets, it becomes difficult to use conventional analysis and visualization techniques without resorting to statistical methods more suited to such ``big data" problems. There are several such methods, each of which usually places emphasis on a certain aspect of the dataset. However, these can be used in conjunction with each other to complement each other to generate a comprehensive understanding of the fundamental physical mechanisms prevalent in a flow-field.The central goal of this dissertation is to develop strategies based on novel statistical, model reduction and signal processing techniques to derive such physical insights into large CFD datasets of practical interest. To demonstrate this, three high fidelity LES datasets of various unsteady flow-fields arising in Micro Air Vehicle (MAV) flight have been analyzed in depth. They are a) Static stall of a NACA 0015 airfoil with plasma control, b) Dynamic stall in a plunging SD 7003 airfoil, and c) Interaction of a stream-wise oriented vortex impinging on a rectangular wing, which is a canonical problem in the aerodynamics of formation flight. First, model reduction as an effective means to study complex, realistic flows is investigated. The recently popularized model reduction technique, Dynamic Mode Decomposition (DMD) has been given special emphasis in addition to the well known Proper Orthogonal Decomposition (POD), to study the three cases mentioned above. In the NACA 0015 static stall case, DMD analysis reveals a strong instability in the flow-field at a Strouhal number St = 2. Subsequent actuation with a Nano-Second Pulse Dielectric Barrier Discharge (NS-DBD) plasma actuator at this frequency is found to mitigate stall, indicating the effectiveness of DMD analysis in estimating actuation parameters for flow control a priori. The potential of DMD in understanding the physics of a turbulent flow-field is then further explored using the SD 7003 airfoil dynamic stall case.
